Anonymous letter, mailbox vandalism under investigation By Bailey Wright The Citizen
On the Monday afternoon before Thanksgiving, North Haven resident Danielle Morfi looked out her window to see the family’s mailbox not quite right. “I looked outside and I saw that the door was hanging off the hinge and it was all
askew,” Morfi said. Upon investigating she also found an unsigned letter threatening to “expose” her for her “embarrassing” actions. She immediately called police. On Tuesday, Deputy Chief Kevin Glenn confirmed there is an active investigation into a complaint made

Developer proposes 150 apartments on Route 5 By Bailey Wright The Citizen
The town is considering a proposal to build 150 new apartments on the northern end of Route 5. The plan by Biglietti Construction for 441 and 447 Washington Ave. would also include commercial space. The development would be on the west side of Route 5, across from Glenn Road and about a mile from the Wallingford town line. The Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to hear feedback from the public in early December. From left: Cindy Golia, Annette Bailey, Gerri Giordano, Marge Quinn. Back row: Gloria Peach, Lee Fermo, Jan Tracy, Fran Notaro.
North Haven Garden Club member Gerri Giordano was chosen to be the recipient of the Beacon Award for 2018. Every year Shoreline Publishing recognizes 15 volunteers across the shoreline "who selflessly step up to help the shoreline community's promise
of well being, opportunity and safety for all." Giordano, along with 14 others, was honored at a gala event featuring a cocktail party, dinner, music and a video presentation. In addition, Giordano received an official citation from the State of
Connecticut General Assembly. Giordano has been a member of the North Haven Garden Club since 1976 and was given the Key to North Haven in the 80s for her dedication to making the community a better place.
The PZC previously approved a zoning amendment to clear the way for the apartments in a zone designated for light industrial. The commission also raised the requirement for affordable housing to 20 percent of the units, up from 10 percent. Commission member Theresa RanciatoViele advocated for more affordable units, saying the town isn’t meeting state See Units, A7

fringement of her free speech and is calling for town leadership to condemn the behavior publicly.
Morfi believes she was targeted because she has been outspoken at town meetings in the last year, particularly given the timing of the letter. She received it soon after the Board of Selectmen rejected her appointment to the Community Services Commission following a contentious debate. “I thought it was really completely insane that my children’s safety and peace of mind is compromised because I’m doing something I’m completely allowed to do,” Morfi said. “This is a free speech issue ... what you said and I want you to shut up.” The roughly 200 word letter, which was posted to Facebook by a friend of Morfi’s, describes a group of people who have “had enough” of her “unapologetic attitude towards everyone.” “We have been watching you for the past months and your comments and actions have not only embarrassed us as a group, but you have embarrassed your family. You might not care what the effect is on your family but we as a group do care,” the anonymous letter states.
Morfi said she has also received “aggressive” messages on Facebook and described being “stared down” in public. Politicians from both sides said they experienced similar threats, but disagreed on what those messages mean. Third Selectwoman Sally Buemi said her house was vandalized last year around the time she was in the minority advocating for delaying the approval of artificial turf fields in order to learn more about their health risks. “I see it as a pattern and I’m very discouraged,” Buemi said. She also raised concern that the political divisiveness which “has permeated our
Democratic Town Chairwoman Kathy Grant said it seems like there’s a pattern in town that if you don’t “go along with the status quo, you may face retaliation.” State Rep. David Yaccarino, R-North Haven, said the letter was unacceptable and detrimental. Yaccarino, who in the past has received a negative anonymous letter himself, said he does not see a “pattern” of bullying in town, and hopes that one does not exist. “People should have the opportunity to have their differences. We have that right to say what we want to say and people should be respectful,” Yaccarino said. “We should have differences of opinion, we should vent things out, that’s where you get the best solutions, best community I think.” Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano, of North Haven, said the behavior is “upsetting” and “unacceptable,”
but also said he couldn’t denounce the letter because he didn’t know who sent it or the background as to why. He said he didn’t consider the letter to Morfi to be political. "No political thing appears in this letter,” he said. “From the face of the letter there is nothing regarding political disagreement.” First Selectman Michael Freda said he would read a prepared statement when the board meets Thursday. He said the letter is very serious and is being treated that way, especially by police. “I was very disturbed with reading the letter,” said Freda, a Republican. “I’m upset by it and I don’t condone anybody writing a letter like that to anyone.” bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright Business Owner / Service Provider?
