Amazon project on schedule By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

The concrete walls are up and the roof is under construction at the 855,000square-foot Amazon fulfillment center off Route 5 in North Haven. ”It’s on schedule for May 2019,” said Richard LoPresti, chairman of the town’s Economic Development Com-

mission. “They put the walls up, went in and put in a crane and put in the steel.” The $250 million warehouse and fulfillment center is expected to open in mid-May next year on the site of the former Pratt & Whitney manufacturing plant. LoPresti and First Selectman Michael Freda have checked on construction regular-

ly, and Freda said he has been in touch with Amazon developer Hillwood Investment Properties. General contractor R.C. Anderson could not be reached for comment. The warehouse will feature mezzanines stocked with products and robots working alongside employees to pick,

The Amazon facility in North Haven, shown here Aug. 25, also calls for extending Valley Service Road, which is just out of sight at the bottom of the photo, to the facility.

Dinosaurs will roam among fairgoers this weekend at the 76th annual North Haven Fair.

When Lois Stover was one of just five members in the town’s garden club in 1954, she never expected that 64 years later she’d have a garden dedicated in her honor.

“We were just looking for something different that kids would like,” said Joe DeLorenzo, an executive board member of the fair organization. “When we found this we thought it would (be perfect).”

“It feels amazing,” Stover, 93, said while sitting next to the garden officially dedicated to her, the club’s founding member.

How to make the most of your side business By Jeff Jolly

It can be personally and financially rewarding to earn extra cash doing something you enjoy. If you are one of the many Americans supplementing your paycheck by running a small business, here are some tips to help you profitably manage your side gig: Make your business official. Consider running your side job like a real business, even if you have no intention of turning it into something big. Open a separate checking account. Get an Employer Identification Number (EIN), a federal identifier, for tax purposes.

Apply for a state tax ID, if your state requires one. And, consider working with a tax professional who specializes in helping small business owners. Track your earnings and expenses. Store your receipts and use a spreadsheet or app to keep tabs on how much you earn and spend. If expenses are high and income is low, you may want to scale back your efforts or look for ways to reduce costs. As your earnings grow, eligible expenses can help offset a potential tax bill. Find your sweet spot. Look for ways to efficiently increase revenues. Set prices

to ensure your costs are covered and focus on your most profitable products or services. Target your best customers and build a repeat business. Market your side business through social media to grow a following.

need to invest more of your money in the business? If so, how much? Also, evaluate your ability to obtain more supplies and whether you’ll need to hire an employee or two. Is it sustainable? Consider the size of your market and demand for your product or service. Who is your competition, and where do you fit into the mix? Will your offering still be relevant in five years? Ten? Trust the numbers over your instincts.

Be realistic. As your business grows, you may be tempted to quit your day job. Before you turn your efforts into a full-blown career, ask yourself: Is it scalable? It will likely take additional resources to turn your hobby into a fulltime moneymaker. Will you

She is also a life member of the State’s Federated Garden Club.
