No higher cancer rate at P&W, study states By Stephen Singer Associated Press

HARTFORD - An 11-year study of the incidence of brain cancer at jet engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney in the state ended last week with university researchers saying they found no statistically significant elevations in the rate of cancer among workers, even in the North Haven plant. The researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Illinois at Chicago said they identified 723 workers diagnosed with tu-

In a summary released last week, researchers say workers at Pratt & Whitney’s former North Haven plant didn’t experience significantly higher than average rates of deadly brain cancer but widows of former aerospace workers said they’re not convinced and that they will fight on.

The researchers also reviewed 11 chemical or physical agents on the basis of known or suspected carcinogenic potential that could affect the central nervous system or other organs. ‘Green remediation’ continues at former UpJohn site By Kyle Swartz The North Haven Citizen Drivers on the Rt. 40 connector may notice trucks and construction this year at 41 Stiles Lane, the contaminated, former industrial site which abuts the Quinnipiac River. Two large projects — dredging and installing a subterranean barrier wall — will commence in 2013 as part of ongoing remediation efforts. The 78-acre property once contained the Upjohn Company, manufacturer of chemical items including pharmaceutical products, and other industries through the decades. Dating back to a brick-making company in the 19th century, onsite companies operating under then-laxer environmental laws polluted the property’s soil, underground clay and wetlands. In obtaining UpJohn in 2003, Pfizer Inc. also acquired 41 Stiles Lane, and has since sought remediation of the land, alongside the national Environmental Protection Agency and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

“We would like to turn this into an ecological reserve, with different types of habitats natural to the area,” said Project Director Russ Downey. “It will be quite beautiful, quite attractive to the community.” Along where the land’s perimeter abuts river or wetlands, Pfizer will in 2013 install an underground wall made of expandable clay and Portland cement. “Most activities this year will be related to this wall,” Downey said. The subterranean barrier will decrease the site’s permeability, meaning that less of the Quinnipiac River will flow into the contaminated property, and less ground water will flow out.

SARAH recycles, and assists those with disabilities By Kyle Swartz The North Haven Citizen

Large red recycling bins situated in Town Green and other locations throughout North Haven are part of a nonprofit’s efforts to provide employment for individuals with intellectual and other disabilities. Begun from $6 in seed money five decades ago, SARAH Inc. now operates offices along the state shoreline and within New Haven county, including a new North Haven satellite office at 556 Washington Ave. Be-

sides finding jobs for clientele, SARAH also offers daily enrichment programs for people with disabilities. “We really focus on providing them with a full day, so that the people feel included in the community” said Pat Bourne, SARAH executive director. “We offer programs which teach life skills or work skills. We get people involved in community volunteer projects. We run recreational services.” Opened about a year ago, SARAH’s 5,000-square-foot location on Washington Avenue contains quiet rooms,

activity areas, computers, healthcare facilities and other services for locals with disabilities. Besides being a destination where clients can come for downtime or educational purposes, the branch also pursues work opportunities for them in nearby towns, like the recycling program in North Haven. Using grant money and working with town officials, SARAH in March placed five big red bins and 50-60 smaller ones at public and business locations all over the town. Crews comprised of SARAH clientele service the bins, col-

lecting the recyclables for return and repurposing at an East Haven plant. “Every nickel we get helps create a paycheck for the people we help here,” said Jim Lamb, business development manager for SARAH. “Some of our people, the smiles they have when they get a paycheck, it’s a real sense of self-esteem and self-worth they get.” Helping get the recycling program started was cooperation from North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda. “I talked to Freda and he said, ‘Jim, what do you need?’” Lamb said. “When we went in to meet him, he

brought in Public Works Director Lynn Sadosky. They suggested locations for our bins. Freda had already thought everything through. Everybody was working together.” Bourne echoed Lamb’s feelings that town officials, residents and the business community have been supportive of SARAH. “Everyone has made us feel so welcome,” she said. “We couldn’t ask for a better place than this area.” “People like helping the environment,” she added.

North Haven Mom Commentary

Wyman Park is a pleasure By Amy Flory Special to the Citizen

My family and I have lived in North Haven for five years, and we are still finding new and fun things to do around town. As a stay-athome mom to a four-year-old

and a six-year-old, budget is always a factor when we plan our activities, and I am thankful we live in an area that has so many great parks. Before I had kids, I knew that children went to the park. It was one of the four Photo by Amy Flory

or five things I knew for sure about kids: They like ice cream, they like to yell, they don’t like to sleep, they are great snugglers, and they congregate at parks. As a mom, I now know a few more things about kids, and I know much more about parks. I know that not all parks are made the same and that the best ones are fully fenced and provide partial shade. I know they are busiest in the mornings and after school, and are least busy around lunch time and

dinner time. I know that most of them are equipped with a porta potty, so it’s important to go before leaving the house. While a partially shaded park is ideal for most days, on very hot days when even more shade is desired, my family likes the John Grover Wyman Park on Blakeslee Avenue. This park is fenced, with only one small opening at the front for possible pintsized escape artists, and the plentiful trees offer a bounty

of shade. There is a small sandbox and a swing set for the younger crowd on one side, and a larger swing set and a tire swing on the other. There are monkey bars for the bigger kids, and a castle-like climbing structure that keeps my kids busy and happy. We bring a snack, since my grazers can’t go more than an hour without food, and we often

in 1957, Bourne said, after three families with specialneeds children each put $2 toward a mailing. Through these communications, the families wanted to raise awareness about people with disabilities and determine if others in the area faced similar circumstances. The response was positive. Other people got involved and together they founded a special-needs school in the basement of a church. As the children got older, SARAH volunteers realized the kids needed something to do after school. Thus was created the aspect of SARAH which finds employment opportunities. Over 50 years later, the nonprofit serves over 500 children and adults throughout the shoreline and New Haven regions. At North Haven, SARAH employs client Milagros Rivera as a receptionist “I like it here,” Rivera said. “I come here and I am a receptionist. I like being a receptionist and I like it here because there are great people here. It makes me feel good.”

ple on my iTunes. The 3D too, while not essential, captured the free-spirited Moulin Rouge verve that put the director on the map. Visually and technically, no one can deny the film is stunning. But The Great Gatsby is not all flash and mirrors. The human heart is readily on display. In one scene, sheer white curtains billow through a room from every angle, winds blowing in through open doors. The effect is at once sensuous and dizzying with beauty. A

There is an inherent risk in taking a literary classic and twisting it with anachronistic flare. Certainly, eyebrows were raised in 1996 when a certain director dared to bring Shakespeare to the big screen with a gun-brandishing gang and an edgy soundtrack underscored by the original words of the bard himself. Romeo and Juliet bore a creative genius, a reminder that a good story is truly timeless. That film director was Baz Luhrmann, and in The Great Gatsby, he reunites with his former Romeo, Leonardo DiCaprio. Comparisons skew perceptions, and with four onscreen renditions of The Great Gatsby, five now with Luhrmann’s opus, there are sure to be naysayers. Most of us cringe when a remake of a film, or even a song, is brought center stage. Familiar with one version, in-

stinct draws us to believe the original must be better or best. Sometimes that is true, but without opening our eyes to possibility, we could miss a real gem. It is with this mindset that I approached this latest and “great”-est from this fearless and often bizarre visionary. The end result is exponential extravagance. The characters never approach any personal depth but instead portray glossy replicas of an era, caricatures of ideas, amidst the frenetic energy of Luhrmann’ play land. The themes, not the players, are the main course. From the decadent costumes to the bedazzling sets, Luhrmann colors every scene with shades of vibrant color and sound. Music strokes the canvas with rabid delight — Jay-Z, Beyonce, Florence and the Machine, will.i.am, Fergie, Bryan Ferry. Commentary An Ounce of Prevention

Blood pressure medications By V. Deborah Culligan, RN, MPH

Many people take blood pressure medications. A healthcare provider may prescribe two or more pills for high blood pressure. This is because there are different classes of medication that function in different ways in the body. The healthcare provider will try to prescribe the best combination for the job, with as few side effects as possible. Because, let’s face it: if the pills you are supposed to take make you feel bad or have too many side effects, you aren’t likely to take the pills! Blood pressure medications are generally taken for life, although healthcare

providers will evaluate and adjust types and doses over time. A change in your health status might necessitate a change in your blood pressure medication. Or a new class of medications may be developed that are superior to older medications. Sometimes medications may stop working; the dose prescribed for you at age 40 may need to be changed at age 60. Whatever the reason for the adjustment, it is rare that blood pressure medications are

completely taken away. Because high blood pressure generally does not have noticeable symptoms, people may stop taking their pills, or just take them sometimes. Blood pressure medications do not work this way. They need to be taken every day (or according to the regimen established by your healthcare provider) for the rest of your life, unless you are instructed to stop. If you understand what the blood pressure medication you take is doing for your heart and body, you may better understand why it is important to take them as prescribed. Money buys power By Kyle Swartz Money has gained too much purchasing power in national politics. During the 2012 elections, dollars played as large a role as ever. Yet, this time around, many bigspenders received little in return. American Crossroads, the Super PAC of GOP strategist Karl Rove, reportedly invested $105 million on advertising in 20 federal races. Only three of those elections resulted in victories for Rove-backed politicians. In Connecticut, media mogul Linda McMahon dropped $97 million from her personal fortune while losing campaigns for U.S. Senate seats in 2012 and one cycle prior. But just because lump sums didn’t shape political outcomes in 2012 doesn’t mean dollars won’t decide results in future elections. The U.S. Supreme Court’s odious 2010 Citizens United decision allows non-political organizations and individuals to contribute infinitely to Super PACs, which then fund advertisements and other influenceseeking measures. Potential remains for Super PACs to prevail successfully upon voters. Moreover,

financial forces can pressure all areas of politics. Special-interest dollars can help skew Washington D.C. decisions, including gun-reform proposals which jammed in the Senate. That legislative body, tellingly, is sometimes referred to as “the millionaires’ club,” referencing personal worth needed to attain a seat. Speaking at a recent Yale conference about money affecting government, state Sen. Chris Murphy, who last year outlasted McMahon’s latest fiscal barrage, described campaign fundraising as transforming him into a telemarketer (New Haven Independent, 5-7). As Murphy retold it, he would dial potential donors, wealthy friends and strangers, for four to six hours each day, requesting donations. Not all people with political ambitions also have it in them to perform this tedious, unpleasant task. The result, Murphy proffered, is that some talented aspirants decide not to run for office. Thus, individuals who do enter elections must be comfortable with the proposition process of

and Blood Institute has published a guide for understanding the actions of blood pressure medications. The information that follows is from this guide. There are basically nine categories of blood pressure medications that are commonly used: Diuretics, betablockers, ACE inhibitors, Angiotensin antagonists, calcium channel blockers, alpha-blockers, alpha-beta blockers, nervous system inhibitors and Vasodilators. Many people are familiar with diuretics, also known as “water pills.” They work to reduce blood pressure by taking excess water and sodium from the body. Beta-blockers reduce nerve impulses to the heart and blood vessels. This action makes the heart beat slower and with less force, which causes the blood pressure to drop and decreases the workload on the heart. ACE inhibitors prevent the formation of a hormone called angiotensin II. This hormone causes blood vessels to narrow. By inhibiting (or preventing) this action, the blood vessels relax and the blood pressure goes down.

Angiotensin antagonists act similarly to ACE inhibitors in that they shield the blood vessels from the hormone angiotensin II. This keeps the vessels more open which allows the blood pressure to go down. Calcium channel blockers prevent calcium from entering the muscle cells of the heart and blood vessels. This causes the blood vessels to relax and the blood pressure decreases. Alpha-blockers reduce nerve impulses to blood vessels, which allow the blood to flow more easily. With better flow, the blood pressure decreases. Alpha-beta blockers work the same way as Alphablockers, but slow the heartbeat as well, (similar to how Beta-blockers work). Nerve impulses can cause blood vessels to contract (or get narrower). Nervous system inhibitors (may also be known as central antagonists) control nerve impulses to the blood vessels so that they can stay relaxed. This helps to reduce blood pressures. Vasodilators directly open blood vessels by relaxing the muscle in the vessel walls, causing blood pressure to go down. Whenever you begin a new medication, watch for

side effects. Some can be very mild and may go away with time. Others may not be tolerable. Symptoms that are very troublesome may cause you to not take your medication, putting you at risk for a heart attack or stroke. Speak with your doctor if you notice side effects. As noted, there are many types of blood pressure medications and it may take some adjustments to find the right combination for you. While the information on the classes of blood pressure medication is not critical to know, it may help you to understand your medications and encourage you to stick with the regime prescribed by your health care provider. There are many brand names (and generic forms) of the medications types. Money Continued from page 10 fundraising. “The skill of telemarketing does not translate very often to the skill of governing. So there are real implications for the type of people you get on the other end,” pointedly remarked Murphy. What can be done to reverse this trend of burgeoning monetary influence? The internet can be of help. In his 2012 race, Murphy raised 40 percent of his $10 million from small donors online. Email lists and “crowdsourcing” websites can allow hundreds of thousands of voters to provide minor contributions to the campaigns

of their preferred candidates. These donations add up. By better leveraging internet technologies, people in office or seeking it can spend fewer hours fundraising and additional time on the issues. This would be a win against special- interest money, as would the Supreme Court repealing Citizen’s United. Either positive advancement would mean more democratic power in the hands of the people, rather than with uber-rich individuals who invest millions attempting to sway political outcomes. Study

Continued from page 1 Comparisons among Pratt & Whitney plants showed a slightly higher incidence of tumors and cancer among workers at the North Haven plant, the researchers said. But further evaluation found no association with estimated workplace exposures. Pratt & Whitney spokesman Ray Hernandez said: “We are pleased that employees have answers to their questions and there is no correlation between cancer and the workplace.” The principal University of Pittsburgh researcher, Gary Marsh, said employees can be reassured that working at Pratt & Whitney before 2002, the start of the study period, “does not increase your risk of developing brain cancer and does not increase your risk of dying.” “The news is good,” he said. The slightly elevated cancer rates at the North Haven plant may reflect external occupational factors that researchers did not measure or other factors unique to North Haven or the baseline plant used in the internal comparisons, Marsh said. The researchers analyzed the records of nearly 250,000 workers over a 53-year period, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive such studies in an occupational setting, Marsh said. It also is the first large-scale study of workers in the jet engine manufacturing industry. The results echo what was released in the first stage of the three-stage study in 2008. The researchers said then they did not find statistically significant excesses in deaths from malignant brain tumors among North Haven workers. Workers and their families, joined by the International Association of Machinists, pushed for the study after widows and union officials said they were concerned with what appeared to be numerous and similar deaths at Pratt & Whitney plants.

to true love. Which brings us to Jay Gatsby himself. Despite his layered secrets, his soul is pure and driven by dreams, corrupted only by his own insecurity. My heart breaks when he says “I didn’t want you to think I was just some nobody.” It is this pining for acceptance on which the story takes hold. Gatsby represents not only a man in search of his lost love but a representation of our society at large. Materialism has gripped modern civilization with false reassurances that with things come success and glory. What we must remember is that we are worthy in and of ourselves. When Gatsby breaks his formality with the crack of a smile or a twinkle of his eyes, when he playfully tosses shirts from every color of the rainbow over a balcony, he not only symbolically relinquishes all that money has brought to him but also reminds us that happiness comes from within. It is a joyous moment. One should hardly place Leonardo DiCaprio side by side with Robert Redford for a direct comparison because they portray entirely different men with the same character name. Both are handsome, yes, and both are debonair, yes, but one is more serious, the other more surreal. DiCaprio’s Gatsby challenges the heart within us with a lightheartedness of being that tells us to believe that good things will come . . . even if they don’t. “We want to keep the river water and ground water separate,” Downey said. Decreased river water flowing into 41 Stiles lane also means less river water taken in by the property’s treatment plant, which can then expend more power cleansing onsite, contaminated fluids. “This is cost efficient and more sustainable, because it would use less energy,” Downey said. “This would use less than 50 percent of the energy we’re using today at the plant. We waste energy cleaning river water that comes in. The EPA and DEEP don’t want us pumping river water at the

plant. They want ‘green remediation’ methods like the barrier wall, methods that use less energy and have less of an impact on the outside environment.” Project Manager Nick Andreopoulus estimated the wall project to cost Pfizer approximately $7 million, with underground installation starting late-summer and culminating before the end of 2013. “The wall is a significant investment,” said Elaine Richardson, project community relations. “We’re going to be treating the water here for a long time.” Also taking place this summer will be dredging in two onsite Quinnipiac River tidal flats and one tributary which trickles into 41 Stiles Lane.

“The EPA wants those three sites dredged,” Downey said. “Sediments there contain contaminants.” Rather than export dredged-up polluted materials, the sediment will be reused by being put on top of two large, contaminated “piles” on the property. As landfills did not exist for pollutants in the past as they do today, former industries at 41 Stiles Lane disposed of some contaminants in two areas onsite. After remediation workers place dredge materials and clean fill on top to condense and squeeze out contaminants from these areas, the piles will be capped and covered with fauna and other ecological wildlife. “The majority of work in-

volves moving around materials onsite,” Downey said. “We are not trucking contaminated materials through nearby neighborhoods. What the trucks are bringing in is clean fill. And our truckers know the best routes through town so that they are not going through neighborhoods.” “The public may see a lot of work going on here, a lot of equipment here,” he added. “But the work this year is mostly centered on the boundaries of the property.” In 2014, Pfizer intends to expand a successful pilot program for heating, absorbing and decontaminating pollutants underground into a larger effort to remediate 41 Stiles Lane sub-surface. All this work requires permits and approval from national, state and North Haven environmental institutions.

“With past remedies and future developments, we have been working with the community through a citizen’s advisory panel, the North Haven Trail Association and the local land trust, to identify what they’re interested in regarding the site,” Richardson said. “We are looking for input from the town.” After ecological revitalization, Pfizer plans on opening up some areas of the nature reserve to the public, but through controlled access, so that only eco-conscious groups utilize it. Seventeen acres on the far west side, a previously paved over section, will become commercial property made available through Pfizer. “We will work with the town to find something compatible with the site,” Downey said.

Lacrosse ends season on a roll By Kevin Pataky and Kyle Swartz Special to The Citizen

With a pair of Class L SCC opponents left on their regular-season schedule, the North Haven High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team was one win away from qualifying for State Class M playoffs. Not only did the Indians beat their first opponent, West Haven, by the convincing score of 17-4, they also upset Amity Regional in a thrilling game, 10-8, to finish the season at 8-8, qualifying for post-season play. During NHHS’ May 16 contest against West Haven, the Blue Devils scored first, but didn’t get many more goals from there. On the Indians’ senior night, North Haven went on to outscore the visitors 5-2 in the first quarter. By halftime, their lead ballooned to 9-3. The third quarter was when North Haven sealed the win. They shut out West Haven in the quarter, 7-0, and Citizen photos by Kevin Pataky cruised to a 17-4 victory. “That was a nice win,” said Clockwise, from top left: Freshman Jake Kastenhuber. Strong showing Submitted by Chris Kirby

The North Haven Fury U10 Devo Girls Soccer Team made a strong showing at the Clinton Invitational Tournament in mid-May. Sixteen teams competed in the U10 Girls Division, and the Fury went undefeated in each of its games against four opponents from Avon, Madison, Clinton and Wallingford. Eleven Fury players represented North Haven on the field, sharing rotations at all positions, including goal-keeping duties. The U10 North Haven Fury is coached by Adam Acquarulo. Team members, back row: Rory, Talya, Emily, Eveani, Sarah. Front row: Annalise, Adrianna, Megan, Carly, Laura, and Sophia.

and Mike Halloran, and sophomores Uyeki and Cole Pecora, brother of outgoing Quincy. Freshman Jake Kastenhuber should also contribute next year. “Jake was fearless, athletic,” Bailey said. “We didn’t have a long bench this

year, so there were some kids we had to throw out there early, and he was one of them. We kept playing him because he just kept doing what was right. You can’t always teach that: the instinct to do what’s right on the field. Kids are born with it. He’s going to be a good one.” North Haven’s youth lacrosse program is develop-

ing and should provide talent to the high school for years to come. “It will be all about the youth,” Bailey said. “We need to keep introducing the most athletic kids in town to lacrosse.” Kevin Pataky is a professional photographer and longtime contributor to The North Haven Citizen. Jean Kaas and her late husband always taught their children the importance of planning ahead. And Jean’s family couldn’t be happier that she took her own advice. A West Haven native, Jean moved to Masonicare’s independent living community, Ashlar Village, in 2000. After twelve enjoyable years there, Jean and her family realized she needed a higher level of care. Jean now resides at Masonicare Health Center, where residents with progressed memory loss receive specialized, round-the-clock support. Jean’s daughter Karen says, “My brothers and I are so thankful that Mom is at Masonicare. It’s very comforting to see how much the staff cares about her. They keep her involved in activities and really enjoy her sense of humor. They treat her and us just like family.”
