farming as the predominant profession, and the number of sheep in North Haven equaled the number of persons living here! But farming wasn’t the only occupation – North Haven’s natural resources contributed to other industries. Because the Quinnipiac was large enough it could handle ocean-going vessels, and the timber available in town was therefore used to support a shipyard. Along North Haven’s rivers were rich clay deposits and these supplied the many brickyards that were established. The Blue Hills provided fuel wood for the kilns. By the mid-nineteenth century North Haven had fully entered the Industrial Revolution with the establishment of the Clintonville Agricultural Works. David Clinton, the founder, was a farmer who spent his winters inventing devices that would make farming easier. By the 1840s his factory employed several men who made farm tools. This factory underscored the dual nature of work in North Haven – farming and industry.

though, the old farming families moved out and the immigrants new to town bought up the land – Valentino, Pallato, Christoforo, Borelli, and Balleto became associated with market gardens across town. Small industries made way for the larger ones – Pratt and Whitney, Circuit Wise, and U.S. Surgical to name a few. Neighborhoods grew,

schools and churches erected, and life continued here as before – quiet yet industrious. More roads were built, some bearing the names of town ancestors, some hinting at newer settlers like Tenedine Drive and Laydon Avenue. The Mayflower Society of North Haven was established to commemorate the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth in 1620. There are several reasons for setting aside a date to recognize this event: keeping a tradition, remembering our system of free government, and honoring our local history. It is therefore the mission of the Executive Board of the Mayflower Society to continue honoring this date by holding an annual banquet. Traditions are strong in North Haven, and the tradition of the Mayflower Banquet is lasting yet dynamic. The elder members of the Mayflower Society remember when the banquet was held in church or civic halls, and the meal was prepared by the Mayflower Society families “potluck” style. Table arrangements were homemade and turkey dinner was standard. Because membership has grown and those involved have become busier, the banquet is now catered. But it continues to be a yearly gathering of North Haven friends and neighbors, and the turkey dinner and “Pilgrim Punch” continue the tradition! This annual celebration also reminds us of the beginnings of our free government, which was first expressed in the Mayflower Compact. As the Compact says: “In ye presence of God, and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of ye ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices from time to time, as shall be thought most mete and convenient for ye general good.” The Mayflower Society also honors our local history as the founding organization for the North Haven Historical Society. It helps to support the North Haven Historical Society with money raised from the dues and banquet raffles, thus continuing their common goal of preserving local historical structures, documents, and artifacts related to North Haven. In early 2015 the Mayflower Society became an affiliate of the North Haven Historical Society, even more tightly cementing the bond between the two organizations.
