Residents approve money for new engine By Bailey Wright The Citizen

The town will be getting a new fire engine after the purchase was approved at a special town meeting last week. Residents voted overwhelmingly Monday, Feb. 25 to appropriate $750,000 from reserve funds for the purchase of a new pumper engine. “I think it was obvious from

the number of community members that were there, it’s something that community members support,” Fire Chief Paul Januszewski said two days after the vote. The town decided to pay for the engine with reserve, or “rainy day,” funds instead of including it in the fire department’s 2019-2020 budget, which is being determined now, due to time constraints. It typically takes about eight to 12 months for

an engine to be manufactured, Januszewski said. “We’ve reached this point now where we’re kind of in a critical time where we need to make a rapid purchase,” Januszewski said before the vote. “By doing this now, this time of year, instead of having to wait, let’s say for

where I’m supposed to be,” Palmieri said.

Jessica Palmieri is maybe even more excited to reopen The Men’s Room Barber Shop at its new location than she was first opening in town three years ago.

When Palmieri opened up at 1878 Hartford Turnpike in 2016, she was just learning how to run a business. Three years later, reopening in the new location at 342 State St. is a fresh start and she’s seen it as a chance to make the business even more her own.

The new space is clean and polished with neutral tones and without over-the-top or gender-specific decor. She still uses the two 100-yearold barber chairs she acquired from the old owner of Diglio’s Barber Shop, but they’ve been reupholstered like new.

Since she thinks of the first shop as a kind of home, leaving was sad, but she said she’s ready for the change.

North Haven resident Jeff Jolly said he’s been going to Palmieri for cuts since she first opened in town and was impressed with the new space. “I think it’s beautiful

1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 12/10/2018, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking, Wealth, Business Banking or Wholesale customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed.

Bottled water and the environment The North Haven Garden Club is sharing winning essays from the recent National Garden Club Essay Contest. The following was written by Ruohan Sang. Water is an essential part of our lives; for convenience, for some perceived differences in taste, smell, appearance, or even prestige! We perceive something that costs money to be better than something that is free. Each day, humans consume 780 million liters of bottled water in the world, and spend about $100 per person each year purchasing bottled water.

Besides oil, the manufacturing process also requires millions of additional gallons of water. For every gallon of water that is bottled, over two gallons of water are used for the purification process. This leads to local water shortages that effect nearby residents, especially farmers who need to provide food for the surrounding neighborhoods. The burning of natural resources to produce the bottles released 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This excess of carbon dioxide creates greenhouse gases. It warms the planet by decreasing the evaporative cooling that result in global warning. The resulting rise of temperature eventually causes flooding, and makes the oceans about 30 percent more acidic, killing a wide variety of sea organisms. The most damaging effect of carbon dioxide is on crops. The rise of carbon dioxide correlated with the concentration of nitrogen in plants decrease their growth ability. These plastic bottles not only harm our environ-

ment and diminish our clean water supply through their production, but, also, through the decompression of the plastics post-consumer. The decomposition process of plastic bottles also damages the environment. Approximately 38 million water bottles end up in landfills or as litter in America's street, parks and waterways. U.S. landfills are overflowing with more than 2 million tons of discarded water bottles. The bottles are made of Polyethylene Terephthalate polymers, which might take 1,000 years to decompose. As it decomposes, each bottle amounts toxic pollutants, pollutants like Bisphenol A, styrene, butadiene and methane into our environment. These chemicals continue to leach out into the air, impacting the environment in many ways. First, it impacts the quality of the air around the landfill and pollutes the soil. The high concentration of chemical in the soil result in loss of minerals, which alters

plant metabolism. Secondly, the accumulation can cause ground water contamination. The heavy metals produced in landfills leach into ground water and pollutes the local water resources. Thirdly, landfill gases can easily ignite fire that destroys the habitat of both human and animals. This furthers the spread of leachate pollution of soil and water. Furthermore, the bottles also pollute our water supply. A significant amount of the bottles produced end up in

the surface of rivers and oceans, which limits the access of fresh, drinkable water to the world. Currently, 35 percent of the world population does not have fully sanitized water to drink. Animals ingest the plastic by mistake and this can be deadly for the animal and move on in the food chain. If we do not take actions to limit the use of bottled waters, one day, our whole planet will become a landfill where no species, including humans, are able to survive.

Banton Street ‘Walk and Talk’ The North Haven Trail Association and the North Haven Historical Society, are responding to requests from new and long-time residents to visit and hear stories about the cottages from the 1920s, beaches, snack shack and recreation on the Quinnipiac River and how it turned into Banton Street. The organizations have

planned a “Walk and Talk” for Saturday, April 27. Anyone who would like to share their memories is welcome to join the walk through the abandoned neighborhood. For more information, contact NHHS at 203-239-7722, davannclark@snet.net or NHTA francesnotaro@comcast.net.

Dealing with volatile markets near retirement By Jeff Jolly

Retirement is an important milestone that often comes after years (or decades) of careful planning. For those who’ve saved diligently and are nearing the end of their career, the mere thought of market volatility can send shivers down their spine.

Will a sudden drop in the value of their portfolios impact their ability to retire? Will they really have enough money to live off of for the rest of their lives? Should they put their retirement plans on hold so they can maintain a steady paycheck? If you are in this situation, now’s a good time to assess

whether you have the right plan in place to help you transition confidently into retirement, no matter Jolly what happens in the broader market. Here are some tips to keep in mind. 1. Pick your retirement date. If you haven’t already, take time now to decide the year and month when you (and potentially your spouse or partner) want to retire. You may find it is closer than you think, just a few years away. Or you may decide you want to extend your time in the workforce – whether it’s continuing your current career or moving into a new full or part-time role. Either way, your answer can have a big impact on your investment decisions from this point forward. 2. Ensure your investments are diversified. Various parts of the market react to headlines and economic drivers differently. For those nearing retirement, the recent spike in volatility is a reminder of how having a broadly diversified portfolio can help reduce your investing risk. The goal of diversification is that if some of your investments lose value, those losses could be offset by gains with other investments. How do you know if you’re properly diversified? The simplest answer is to check

to see that your portfolio contains a mix of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, shortterm cash investments, savings and other investing vehicles that take into account your goals and comfort-level with risk. Going a step further, ensure you understand how each asset or investment in your portfolio is helping you reach your financial goals. If you’re unsure or want a second opinion, consider consulting a financial advisor for guidance. 3. Balance your need for protection with growth. Protecting your portfolio from current or future market downturns becomes more important as you approach the day when you start living off your savings. Consider investing the money you plan to use for income in the first few years of retirement more conservatively in liquid vehicles that are easy to access. This can help give you peace of mind that you are prepared to handle upcoming expenses should the markets swing. It’s also important to remember that your retirement could last 20, 30 or even 40 years. Balance your

When the market moves, it’s an opportunity to compare your investment strategy to your goals. Are you on track? No matter the answer, there are steps you can take to feel more confident about your ability to retire when and how you want to. For additional help talk to a financial advisor who is willing to discuss your personal circumstances and provide guidance on how to manage your money for today’s market. Jeff Jolly, CFP, is a Financial Advisor and Sr. Vice President with Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. in North Haven. He specializes in feebased financial planning and asset management strategies and has been in practice for 14 years. To contact him, call 203-407-8188 ext. 330 to schedule an appointment.

… they did such a nice job,” he said. On Tuesday, friends, family, and some of Palmieri’s most loyal customers, stopped in for a ribbon-cutting ceremony with First Selectman Mike Freda. Freda said The Men’s Room is a perfect example of what the town should be encouraging and supporting – young, talented entrepreneurs eager to succeed. The storefront was formerly Cosmo’s Barber Shop, owned by John Proto since 1996. Proto retired in 2018, leaving the space open and many loyal customers looking for a new barber. Palmieri said Cosmo’s was a place for men to socialize and its loyal customers were like a family. She said sever-

al of them have stopped in to welcome her to the spot. “Men are very loyal and they're just genuinely happy for you and it’s just so nice to see their energy when they walk in,” Palmieri said. Palmieri, 34, spent 15 years cutting men’s and women’s hair in Westport before her family moved to Wallingford and she decided to open her own place, solely focused on men’s cuts. “There's just something about doing a precision cut on a guy, that you get more satisfaction out of than doing a haircut on a woman,” Palmieri said. She finds men respond well to her as a female barber, and even prefer her to the traditional male barber. “There’s always going to be a woman in The Men’s Room,” she said. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright
