Neighbor, town officials continue fight to preserve Peter’s Rock Park By Bailey Wright The Citizen
It’s been a long time since Joan Mazurek has worried about land around Peter’s Rock Park being developed, and thanks to the town’s most recent open space acquisition the chances of any development are even slimmer.

“It definitely gives me peace of mind,” said Mazurek, a North Haven resident and park neighbor for almost 40 years. “I’m happy that this land was saved for our future generations.” Last month, the Board of Selectmen authorized the purchase of about an acre at 311 Peter's Rock Park entrance on Middletown Avenue in Middletown Ave. as open North Haven. | Bailey Wright, The Citizen space. ACES to honor supporters, contributors at gala By Bailey Wright The Citizen
ACES Education Foundation will honor five community members for their contributions to the organization at their 16th annual gala at the end of the month. Among the honorees is Sharyn Ainsworth Esdaile, who has served in a variety of educational roles, most recently as principal for 11 years at ACES Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School. She retired in 2010.
Jeff Hubbard, who is credited for KeyBank’s donations of more than $40,000 for the purchase of a vehicle for the ACCESS program and the arts therapy program at the Village School. Hubbard is president and commercial sales leader for KeyBank’s Connecticut and western Massachusetts markets. Bob Parker, a retired arts teacher that worked for ACES for 36 years, will also be honored. He was a teacher and then director at ACES Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven’s
Audubon Arts District. Before retiring, he also served as the ACES director of communication. “He currently enjoys his current role as the co-chair of the board of directors at Common Ground, a high school, environmental education center and urban farm in New Haven,” ACES staff said in a statement. ACES will be honoring 2011 graduate of the ACES Educational Center of the Arts, Alyssa Rae Taglia, journalist and traffic anchor for WTNH
News 8. Taglia, a competitive dancer, studied dance in college and volunteers on several boards and the nonprofit organization, “Smiles for Seniors,” which she founded when she was 12. A longtime ACES friend and supporter and “Goddess of the Arts,” Frances “Bitsie” Clark, will be honored as well. Clark was executive director of HomeHaven, an organization that helps elderly people stay in their homes, until she retired in 2017.
She was considered “instrumental” in helping preserve the Little Theatre on Lincoln Street. Clark was also the executive director of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven for about 20 years and served eight years on the Board of Alderman for the city of New Haven. In the past, the gala has raised more than $100,000, which goes towards grants and “Fund-A-Need” initiatives.

Letters to the Editor Spending issues To the editor: While I am encouraged by the economic development in North Haven, as well as the growth of the Grand List and associated tax revenue, I am concerned about the total expenses our town is facing. The mounting debt service from bonded projects, combined with ballooning budget expenditures and state mandates could jeopardize our financial status. We cannot continue to add contractual obligations, purchases and services and still expect the mill rate to remain the same. There are two sides to the financial ledger – revenues and expenses. We need to be more judicious with our spending. Nancy E. V. Barrett M.B.A. North Haven

Retired? What to do when the market swings
Park
By Jeff Jolly
is surrounded on three sides by town land and directly abuts Peter’s Rock Park. When its longtime owner Raymond Neil died a couple of years ago the town put in an offer.
For several years leading up to 2018, the stock market was abnormally calm. Stocks had some ups and downs, but generally continued to march higher without much disruption. Then, in the fall of last year, we started to see a spike in market volatility. More sizable drops in the prices of stocks – even when quickly erased by gains the next day – generated unease for investors who had become accustomed to smoother investing conditions. Historically, of course, market volatility is more of the rule than the exception. But it can cause even the savviest stock investors to ask, “Do I need to take action?” And for investors who are retired, an even bigger question may arise: “How will moves in the market impact the savings I am living on?” If you are asking either of these questions, know you are not alone. When you see the daily headlines about what might be to come, it’s natural – and even prudent – to step back and ponder what you need to do next. Here are two steps to consider: 1. Review your withdrawal strategy. Depending on how much money you have invested in stocks, your

portfolio may lose value when the market dips. If market swings and the Jolly potential for a greater downturn make you nervous, revisit the amount of money you withdraw monthly to meet your expenses. As you review, the goal is to be assured that the amount you withdraw to meet the next year or two of expenses does not put your long-term financial security in jeopardy. If your base of assets is reduced, you may have to trim your withdrawal amount to assure you have a sustainable long-term income strategy.
The land will be used for new parking for hikers, allowing them to better reach the north and east trails of the park and the community garden. The property was formerly a dairy farm, according to Mazurek. A dilapidated house will be torn down by the town after the closing and an environmental assessment. With this newest addition, Peter’s Rock Park totals almost 187 acres, a significant expansion from the 14 acres that were first acquired by the town in 1874.
Fight for open space Mazurek and her husband were building a home on Cloudland Road about 38 years ago when they learned a developer was trying to build 300 condos on 82 acres of undisturbed neighboring land.
2. Don’t take unnecessary chances in your stock exposure. For the long-term investor – which includes you as a retiree – volatility in equities can work in your favor. It’s possible that you will spend one to three decades in retirement, giving you time to withstand some market moves. At the same time, it’s important to preserve your base of savings and not be overexposed to stock risk. Review your exposure in the context of
Fearing the demise of the wildlife they were just getting to know, she initiated the beginning of what ended up being a 17-year fight to protect Peter’s Rock Park. In the 1980s, they started the Citizens for Preservation of Peter’s Rock, Inc. (CPPR) and fought proposals for condos, cluster housing, affordable housing, and golf courses over the years.
One long battle got the attention of the New York Times. Mazurek was featured as the leader of the group, which was suing the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission for approving a developer’s plan for a golf course. The suit claimed the commission acted illegally, accepting information from the developer, John Prete, after deadlines had passed. It also contended the commission wasn’t giving the public enough time to review and comment on the proposal. With support from some town officials, the developer persisted, until eventually nixing the plan when his financial backing dropped off. The $10 million project, proposed around 1990, called for a 18-hole course, a club house and banquet facility with seating for 500 people. Mazurek’s team cited the harmful chemicals that would be used to maintain the fairways, increased flooding and displacement or death of hundreds of species of birds, trees and other wildlife. “I just couldn't bear to drive all these beautiful animals out of here,” Mazurek said. She still lives in the Cloudland Road home and still gets a thrill when she sees deer meandering through the woods in the backyard. “To this day, I look out… and it just keeps me going,” she said. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright

The animal control officers decided to try the program after seeing other shelters like the ones in Wallingford and Branford find success with it. Reading to Pets is fun for the people, but gives the dogs a chance to socialize with more humans, ultimately helping them become more adoptable. “The socialization, they make them more adoptable because they're not just barking at people who are coming to see them and then leaving,” Carney said,
noting that it helps for them to see youngsters and adults alike. Rashba and Carney said they hope to continue Reading to Pets. Dates will be announced on the North Haven Animal Control Facebook page. The animal control office at 38 Terminal Drive is shared with Hamden Animal Control. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright
