Firefighter’s brave act applauded By Bailey Wright The Citizen

Driving home on the Merritt Parkway during the early hours of Thanksgiving day, volunteer firefighter Jenna Jennings witnessed a truck driving erratically before it crashed into a tree and caught fire. Jennings and a fellow passerby pulled over and saw the driver was trapped inside of the burning truck. The pair then worked to free the man and pull him out of the truck window, carrying him away from the fire to safety. “I just kind of went into auto pilot and reverted into training,” Jennings said. Recently, Jennings was recognized by Fire Chief Paul Januszewski at the Board of Fire Commissioners regular meeting. “This is something where

she really went above and beyond in terms of protecting life, and made a difference,” Januszewski said. Jennings was presented with a commendation letter. The 25 year-old has been volunteering for the fire department for about five years and also works as an emergency medical technician and assists with North Haven police and fire dispatch. “For me, I just did my job. I feel like it was what I was supposed to do,” Jennings said. She said two other women stopped to help attend to the driver before paramedics arrived. Januszewski said by the time the North Haven Fire Department and state police arrived, the truck was fully engulfed.

INDUSTRIAL FIRE

A recently completed fire investigation report shows November’s industrial fire on Defco Park Road was likely caused by submersible tank heaters in the facility’s plating tanks. The fire, which occurred in the early morning hours of Nov. 24 at the Parker-Hannifin Corp., involved several hazardous chemicals and left the fire department with more than $570,000 in equipment replacement costs. Mutual aid was provided by three neighboring towns and no one was injured. The Wallingford fire department also incurred equipment costs of approximately $46,000. The manager of the ParkerHannifin facility, Greg More, told fire officials that due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the facility had shut down for about five days. He stated the temperature of the plating tanks should have been turned down for the holiday weekend. He also said there had been problems in the past with the tank heaters drawing too much power, according to the report. In the report, More said the liquid in the tanks can evaporate over time, which could See Fire, A9

ACA — a plan worth saving Affordable Care Act? It’s too soon to tell.

These are uncertain times for the Affordable Care Act and for those Americans insured under it.

A group of states is vowing to appeal O'Connor’s ruling, meaning the fate of the ACA may be decided in the Supreme Court.

At the end of 2017, the Republican-backed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act effectively repealed the ACA’s individual mandate, which hit people with an IRS penalty for not carrying health insurance.

In the meantime, legal experts say O'Connor’s decision won't immediately affect peoples’ health coverage, which will come as a relief to many Americans.

With that tax penalty gone, on Dec. 14, Republican-appointed U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor ruled that the ACA was unconstitutional.

Here in Connecticut, the head of the state’s health insurance exchange assured residents that O'Connor’s decree will not affect their ability to sign up for and use 2019 plans offered through Access Health CT.

Access Health CT also announced that it is extending its open enrollment period for another month. Customers will now have until Jan. 15 to sign up for coverage that starts on Feb. 1. The extension was planned prior to the recent court ruling. The Affordable Care Act — President Obama’s signature legislation — has been the law of the land for nearly a decade, and Republicans have been fixated on seeing it fail ever since.

With O’Connor’s recent decision, Obamacare is legitimately on the ropes. This is troubling, especially for the millions of Americans who are insured thanks to the ACA. According to a Centers Chief Executive Officer for Disease Control and PreJames Michel said on Dec. 15, “We will not let this news vention report, 19.3 million get in the way” of the organi- fewer people were living zation’s efforts to reduce the without health insurance in number of uninsured in the state. lead to overheating in a plating tank. He said the plating tanks are equipped with electric heaters and electric agitators. Fire officials determined the area of origin based on burn patterns, lines of demarcation, fuel loads and areas of most extensive damage. The plating tanks were located in the south end of the Plating Department, in the rear of the building. “We knew there were chemicals in the buildings, but we also knew because there were chemicals in the building how bad it could get,” Januszewski said at November’s meeting of the fire commission. “Had we not made the stop that we did, we could have possibly polluted the drinking water system, we would have impacted water runoff into the Quinnipiac River and ultimately into the Long Island Sound, and we would have been looking at evacuating neighborhoods,” he said. Fire officials reported chemicals including nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and nickel and cobalt products were involved. Storage of raw chemicals and hazardous waste was located adjacent to the plating department, according to a site plan. The fire was determined to have been accidental. A town police officer working a private duty job first called the Dispatch Center at 3:11 a.m. to report smoke coming from the building at 33 Defco Park Road. In the same minute, dis-

Parker-Hannifin’s facility EHS specialist, Tracy Elsenboss, told fire officials the building’s fire alarm system had been recently inspected by Encore Fire Protection, which also maintains the sprinklers, which Januszewski said did operate normally. The investigation found that the administrative assistant and owner/occupant of the Parker-Hannifin facility, Susan Doolan, received calls from the facility’s alarm company, Nationwide Security, yet the fire alarm system failed to notify the North Haven Dispatch Center. Doolan told fire officials she received the first phone call from Nationwide Security around 2:45 a.m. notifying that a trouble alarm had been received from the facility at 33 Defco Park Road. Ten minutes later, a second call reported the alarm might be a fire alarm. The first fire suppression units arrived at approximately 3:18 a.m., about seven minutes after receiving reports of the structure fire from the off-duty police officer. Units were not fully cleared until about 4 p.m. Due to the hazardous chemicals involved, an investigation of the interior could not be completed until the following day and North Haven police supervised the site overnight. Parker-Hannifin is a Fortune 250 company that manufactures motion and control technologies.

Many Connecticut families and individuals will try to survive in dark, frigid homes because they can’t afford the high cost of energy. Operation Fuel will demonstrate what it is like to live in a freezing home at the Ice House, Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Old State House in downtown Hartford. The Ice House will be built the night before by professional ice sculptors. There are approximately 500,000 Connecticut households that can’t afford the

The volunteers also brought along Whitney and Dunbar, two cats that are brother and sister who are both available for adoption.

The monetary donations are used to pay for veterinary bills.

This new year, resolve to get your finances in order A new year is a time when people resolve to change their lives, from getting in shape to improving relationships and achieving work or life balance. Financial goals are tops among New Year’s

resolutions and are easier to keep than one might think. Tips for sticking to financial resolutions include:

Photographers of all skill levels wanted North Haven Camera Club is scheduled to meet the first and third Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m., at Hope Christian Church, 211 Montowese Ave. Professional photographer Lisa Cuchara, author of “Create Fine Art Photographs from Historic Places and Rusty Things” is scheduled to speak at the Tuesday, Jan. 8 meeting. She will discuss her love for rust

in photography, and her approach to and experience with photographing historic and abandoned buildings and urban decay. Equipment and techniques used to bring out the beauty and drama of these subjects will also be discussed. This presentation is free to those who belong to any Connecticut photography club, $10 for non camera club members.

New members and guests are welcome at all meetings. The club, now in its eighth year, offers instructional meetings, workshops and field trips for photographers of all skill levels. Camera ownership can range from cell phones to advanced dSLRs.

for a savings account or emergency fund. Even $25 a month can make a difference over time. Make short term goals: Instead of resolving to save thousands in 2019, aim to save $20, $25 or even $100 a week or month – and celebrate each small victory. Spring clean – in January: Clean your closets, the garage and basement, then list items for sale online. Decluttering will save money (and sanity). Sell gift cards: Trade in unused gift cards for cash and put that promptly into a savings account. Wait 24 hours: To mitigate

impulse buying, wait 24 hours before making an unplanned purchase. It’s likely the impulse will likely wear off. Drop cable: It’s a monthly expense that can be replaced painlessly and inexpensively with several options. Update your W4: While many look forward to a big tax refund, it’s better to adjust withholdings to ensure you are paying the correct amount of taxes. This may mean a few extra dollars each paycheck.
