1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 03/25/2019 and 05/31/2019. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: AR, CT, DC, FL, GA, MD, MS, NC, NJ, NY, SC, TX and VA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply, and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 02/15/2019, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in AR, CT, DC, FL, GA, MD, MS, NC, NJ, NY, SC, TX and VA with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking or Wealth customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 03/25/2019 to 05/31/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1,2. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer, except the Portfolio by Wells Fargo $500 offer, available from March 25, 2019 until May 31, 2019. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. Releasing trout into the Quinnipiac By Ashley Kus Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN – Children and families gathered at the Meriden Linear Trail on Oregon Road Monday eager to release over 100 trout into the Quinnipiac River. The annual fish stocking by the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association drew a crowd despite the cloudy, cool weather.

435 Lewis Avenue Meriden

For more information or to make an appointment, call 203.694.5200. The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute is the charter member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance.

“See the smiling faces, right here, this is what it’s all about,” said Peter Picone, conservation chair for the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association. “They get to see the conservation in action.” Families from Meriden, Wallingford, Berlin and even Guilford came out, taking turns bringing buckets of fish ranging from 12 inches to 20 inches down to the river. The rainbow, brown and brook trout were provided by Harding Trout Hatchery. “It introduces kids to fish and hopefully fishing,” said

Brian Harding. For the last two decades Harding has been participating in the event with Picone. Harding drives the hatchery truck with the fish down the trail and hands out buckets of fish at each of the five stops along the river. Recent rains swelled the river Monday, but it did not deter kids clad in rain boots from stomping around in the mud and water while waiting to release the fish. A large 20-inch rainbow trout was transported to the river in a rolling garbage container with the help of several community members. “We do see the same kids stocking each and every year,” Harding said. He said sometimes the kids come back when they’re older. “It’s made a nice impact,” he added. akus@record-journal.com 203-317-2448 Twitter: @KusReporter

COMMENTARY

Letters to the Editor Editor : I read with interest the article about North Haven putting a no-tax-increase budget on the table. Our First Selectman seems to be pursuing an alternate fiscal route: cutting services that North Haven has pro-

vided its taxpayers since at least 1974. I refer to tree limb pick-up after major storms. The last significant ice storm took out major tree limbs. We heard that the day after the storm, Mr. Freda declared the town would not be removing the downed limbs. It would be too expensive to

meet the town commitment of removing the storm debris and, in addition, the town didn’t have the manpower to do so because of employee absences. We taxpayers have a right not to have services yanked at the whim of the First Selectman. What service goes next? Carol Snyder North Haven

How much more can we pay? By Dave Yaccarino

As North Haven’s State Representative, I always strive to ensure that my votes are in line with the views and values of the hard-working people I represent. The 2019 Legislative Session began on Jan. 9 and will come to a close on June 5. Some of the most disturbing proposals introduced by Democrats in the legislature and our governor are the tax increases on the already overwhelmed taxpayers of this state. Connecticut is one of the highest taxed states in our country, and yet there are still new proposals introduced this session to implement taxes on anything from sports and recreational activities to camping, home heating oil, sugary beverages, textbooks and non-prescription drugs – just to name a few. Many of these proposals only

seek to find new revenue streams without consideration for the repercussions that additional taxes would have Yaccarino on seniors, families and local businesses. How much more can we pay? I am continuously stopped by constituents who tell me how difficult it is for them to live or run a business in Connecticut, which I fully understand as a small business owner myself. For 40 years the legislature has responded to pleas to improve our business climate and the concerns of our middle class with crippling tax hikes on Connecticut’s taxpayers.

get back to DOT to see if we can get some kind of written comments from them that we could present to the commission?” The store’s expansion would mean two additions to the existing building, to the western and southern sides, and in addition to the third pump island, all the pumps would be moved to a more central location on the site. Nadeem Khalid, also representing the applicant, said the proposal comes at a time when the gas tanks need to be replaced, so it seems like the right time to also make this change. The expansion as presented would mean 17 parking spaces would become 14, and the flow of traffic would be altered on the 0.87 acre property.

Commission members expressed some confusion at the proposed drive-thru window, which was explained to be not only for coffee or to-go food items, but also general convenience store items like milk, candy bars and cigarettes. “This is a drive-thru window

which will serve the people that have been coming to the site for an awful long time,” Scott Hesketh, traffic analyst on the project, said. The applicants explained that they expect drivethru users would mostly be current customers who may want the ease of access a drive-thru could provide. In reply to commissioners’ concerns that this would not be an efficient operation, Hesketh said it would likely be self-limiting based on user convenience. Several commission members and town staff were also not satisfied with the traffic analysis completed on the site, which projected an insignificant increase in traffic volume. “You're adding drivethru lanes to add greater convenience for your customers and I don't understand how providing additional convenience for your customers doesn't increase traffic to your store and doesn't increase traffic volume,” town engineer Andrew Bevilacqua said. Bevilacqua said the intersection is already a problem and any proposal that would increase traffic can only make it worse. He said if the Department of Transportation does get involved in the project, he hopes solutions can be found for the area instead of just allowing the situation to become worse.

dle schoolers when she found out she had been selected for the program. “I’m standing in front of a classroom … I just started laughing and was like ‘wait, really?’ I couldn’t really express it as much as I wanted,” Lebron said. “I was just kind of laughing and squealing into my sweater … it was definitely exciting.” When she got home and shared the news with her parents, they started crying out of joy and she said she couldn't stop talking about the honor for at least a week. Viski had a little more room to express his excitement, since he was home when he found out. “I was just so overcome … I was thrilled,” he said. His former history teacher and one of his letter of recommendation writers, Anthony Pulino, said Viski came to school the next day beaming. “He’s really excited and we're really excited for him and I think it's going to be a lifechanging experience,” Pulino said. During the 20-day trip, the group of 15 Connecticut students will spend time restoring the trenches Americans used during the battle, and also get to explore French culture through working with French students, taking culinary courses and other activities. They will spend the last four days or so exploring Paris. For each student chosen to participate, the opportunity had a slightly different appeal.

Exceptional Service & Respect at a Difficult Time

In Lebron’s case, the trenches themselves and the engineering behind them are fascinating. As a kid, she was drawn to playing with Legos and building things, so the opportunity to work in a trench that has been standing for about 100 years is “extremely cool” she said. “I’ve always been interested in the makeup and how they’ve been able to sustain their structure,” Lebron said. “Now I get to learn the stories of the men who built them first.” For Viski, the chance to restore something with historical significance is particularly special. “I know for a fact that I will never be able to restore an actual trench again, this is such a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said. Viski said he first realized a passion for history when his Boy Scout troop visited the Gettysburg National Battlefield when he was in fifth grade. Intrigued by the thought of being in a place where an event so significant occurred, and seeing the things left behind from it, he started learning more and soon built up a collection of his own war memorabilia. Since then, Viski has collected some 30 gas masks, three uniforms and a variety of equipment and medals and pre-

sented his collection to fellow students at Coginchaug Regional High School. The village of Seicheprey is where the first German offensive against American troops during World War I took place, on April 20, 1918. Connecticut troops from the 102nd Infantry Regiment came under fire as the German forces attacked. The battle raged throughout the day and left both sides with many losses, and the village destroyed. Before the three-week trip itself, the students will meet several times as a group to learn about the history of the project and even get a crash course in French. “I can already tell that we’re going to be a big family,” Lebron said.

A donation page has been set up where people can contribute to the students as a whole or to a particular student. Viski’s family also set up a personal GoFundMe. The group donation page can be found at the Connecticut State Library Transactions website. Also, donations can be mailed to Connecticut Heritage Foundation at 231 Capitol Ave. in Hartford. bwright@record-journal.com

need to look for ways to find efficiencies in government.

From A10

For three years now Republicans in the legislature have put forth a proposal on how to fund transportation projects. This proposal, called Prioritize Progress, was continuously overlooked by Democrats in the legislature.

sial topics discussed in the legislature has been the topic of tolls. Yet despite the public’s recent outcry in opposition to tolls, on March 20 all Democrats on the legislature’s Transportation Committee voted in favor of moving three toll-related bills out of the committee, including legislation directing the state Department of Transportation to draw up a plan to place electronic tolls along I-95, I-91, I84 and Route 15 – this plan requires federal approval.

OURMET FOOD TRUCKS SUN, APRIL 14 & SAT, APRIL 20 2019 FROM ACROSS CT MERIDEN ROTARY CLUB 20TH ANNUAL

Governor Lamont and majority party Democrats have instead endorsed proposals for tolls that have ranged from 53 up to 82 tolls, in order to raise $1 billion. This amounts to about $1,000 to $1,500 per vehicle depending on commutes, plus any other increase in consumer goods and services passed down as a result of the mileage tax.

These toll bills will now head to other committees, including the legislature’s Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee, which I am a member of. You can rest assured that I will be a “no” vote and hopefully enough members will join me in doing so to keep this from moving forward.

Proponents of the toll proposals fail to mention that well over 60 percent of toll revenue would be paid by Connecticut drivers. Currently the state collects approximately $2.5 billion in taxes, federal dollars for roads, bridges, DOT’s budget, and funds for transportation-related purposes. Again, how much more can we pay?
