play with friends, which also makes the mommies happy. As much fun as summer has been, I am reminded how short the summer season really is. Back-to-school ads were in the newspaper the first week in July. Plus, all the stores are in back-to-school mode. I just received notice of when my son goes back to preschool and it really hit me how little time left we have of our carefree summer. I want to enjoy being able to play outside without heavy jackets, hats, gloves and boots, splash around in a pool, have an occasional ice cream or two, even if it is 100 degrees out. North Haven resident Lynn Semple has a four-yearold son and a two-year-old daughter. Semple is a freelance writer.

The opening of school 2011-12 information for the North Haven public schools is as follows: All students, kindergarten through grade 12, will report for a full day of classes on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011. Lunch will be served in all schools. The school day at Clintonville, Green Acres, Montowese Elementary School and Ridge Road Elementary Schools begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:02 p.m. North Haven Middle School begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. North Haven High School be-
gins at 7:33 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. Questions concerning registration of new students and student bus schedules should be directed to the appropriate building principal’s office.
My son is taking part in a great reading program the library has offered this summer. Not only has he learned about different countries and their cultures, but he also earned “library money” to buy a prize at the end of the book program. It will be such a sense of accomplishment for him to cash in his “library money.” He loves to read, so, to him, earning credit toward a prize is an added bonus to activity he already loves. Given how hot the weather has been recently, my family has been having inside play-dates or has been meeting with friends at local libraries. Staying inside reminds me of how, just months ago, we were forced to remain indoors due to all the mountains of snow accumulation outside. Back then, we were longing for hot summer days. Now that those days are here, we are right back to the same thoughts of staying inside due to the weather (well,
I am — not sure about the rest of you). When it is so hot out, eating becomes a chore. I would rather have something light and refreshing for all my meals (can ice cream count?) then heat the house up by turning the oven on. Cooking on the grill is our summer oven (since it probably would not be healthy to eat all that ice cream, right?). I love how there are so many vegetables in the summer and most can be cooked on the grill. This is a good way to get kids excited to eat their vegetables (and moms and dads too!). There are some local farmers markets where kids can get a different view on buying fruits and vegetables. For my family, summer means being outside all day, except when it is just too hot out. We are fortunate that our backyard has a lot of shade, which allows us to play outside even when the weather heats up. We love to cool off in our kiddie pool, have water balloon fights, and play with squirt guns and any other water toy. We also love getting together to
