me and my exploratory committee will look at the options.” He will seek endorsement of the Democratic Town Committee, which meets in May to select candidates. For the state senate seat, which includes towns outside North Haven, he must be endorsed by a committee that meets separately. As for Yaccarino, he is eager to meet residents and share his vision. “I am looking forward to going door to door and meeting many of you in town as the weather warms,” he said in a press release.

Town eyes property tax freeze for seniors By Ken Liebeskind The North Haven Citizen

The senior property tax freeze for North Haven seniors is in the works, with an advisory committee established which will meet on four Tuesdays, from Feb. 9 to March 1. The nine-member committee, which includes seniors and other residents, will issue a report to the Board of Selectmen in early March and the town will vote to approve the tax freeze presented by the selectmen some time in March, according to First Selectman Mike Freda. “I hope it passes, because we’ve been working on this a long time and have a commitment to seniors who qualify for it,” Freda said. Approximately 280 seniors will qualify for the property tax freeze, depending on the asset determination that is set, the first selectman said. The committee will suggest an asset limit the selectmen can accept or reject. Once the tax freeze is in place, seniors who qualify would pay the current tax rate, which will not increase. “No matter what the mill rate is, the taxes they pay will be frozen,” Freda said. Seniors benefit from current state and local tax relief programs. Annual state credits of $150 to $1,250 and a local credit of $350 is provided to residents age 65 or older or 100 percent disabled with See Seniors / Page 2

Opinion Honored to serve By Dave Yaccarino I am honored to announce that I am running for re-election as North Haven’s State Representative for the 87th District. Over the last five years I have always put my fellow North Haven citizens first. My legislative priorities continue to be focused on improving the jobs atmosphere of our state while assisting veterans, seniors, and local education. In the past year I worked along with North Haven’s legislative delegation to secure

approximately $31 million for our new middle school construction; helping our teachers, students and taxpayers. I always reach across party lines for the good and betterment of North Haven and the state of Connecticut. My role is to represent all of the people of North Haven, while always trying to do the most good for all. I strongly believe in working hard, being honest, and listening to all voices. I am looking forward to going door to door and meeting many of you in town as the weather warms.

Letter to the Editor Quality schools help everyone To the editor: Did you know home values are tied to the quality of a town’s schools? If we do not continue to provide stellar education, state-of-the-art technology, career resources and quality athletic programs people will not consider North Haven a desirable place to bring their families to. North Haven has a declining student enrollment trend for the past five years. Young families are either not moving into North Haven or they are sending their children to private schools. Home buyers turn to the

Internet to find town data on town expenditures per pupil and test scores. The last five to seven years have seen a significant reduction in town expenditure per pupil as compared to local towns. Adequate education funding this year can stop this trend and lead to: retaining best students by offering a viable alternative to private school, encouraging real estate purchases and influx of young families, maintaining or improving house values. I ask that the Board of Finance seriously consider passing the budget that was presented by the Board of Education. Jackie St. Peter North Haven

Pins fall as bowlers raise money to help animals By Amanda Falcone Special to The Citizen

WALLINGFORD — At a fundraiser Saturday, Jan. 30 for Bikers Against Animal Cruelty, Dave Clem picked up a multi-colored ball, quickly cleaned it with a towel and shrugged his shoulders as he stared down a lane at Wallingford Bowl. He then stepped forward, releasing the ball and watched as it headed toward the pins. Nine out of 10 fell. Clem picked up another ball and went through the same routine, earning a spare. “Let’s get it rolling here!” the Wallingford resident shouted to his friends. This was the second Bikers Against Animal Cruelty fundraiser that Clem, an owner of two dogs, had attended, and he said the fundraisers give him an opportunity to have fun bowling, while also allowing him to support a great cause. “Dogs are people too,” Clem said. Bikers Against Animal Cruelty, a nonprofit organization run solely by Connecticut volunteers, and based in North Haven, helps dogs and other ani-

mals throughout the United States. The group advocates against animal cruelty and neglect, raises money to save animals that are abused or neglected, and teaches others about responsible pet ownership. “Without education, we’ll never get it to stop,” said Greg Belcher, the organization’s president. Bikers Against Animal Cruelty, which has 50-plus members, holds several fundraisers throughout the year, and Belcher said 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to help animals in need. “Without public support, we wouldn’t go anywhere,” he said. The calls for help come often, and the organization offers financial support to as many animals as possible, Belcher said. Some are hit by cars; others are strangled. The group recently helped a dog in Louisiana that had an embedded collar, meaning that the collar was so tight that skin started to grow over it, Belcher said. “That case really stands out,” he said. “It was hard to get out of my head.” Belcher said the dog in

Louisiana is one of many animals that benefit from fundraisers like Saturday’s bowling event, and he said he was pleased that the fundraiser utilized almost all of the lanes at Wallingford Bowl. “We have an awesome, awesome turnout,” he said. For Sarah Rossi, of Wallingford, and her family, the event was a fun one. The group attended the fundraiser to support their cousin, a member of Bikers Against Animal Cruelty, and they said they enjoyed the bowling. “We came straight here after Boy Scouts,” Rossi said. “We’ll definitely come again next time.” At a lane near Rossi, people cheered as pins were knocked down, a group of friends chatted, and people munched on food they got from the snack bar. Raffle tickets were purchased as music blared, and disco balls lit up the bowling alley. It was entertainment underscored by a serious message: “To say nothing; to do nothing; stops nothing.” To learn more about Bikers Against Animal Cruelty and how you can help, visit bikersagainstanimalcruelty.org.

Business Letting go of emotional investing do keep in mind that diversity alone cannot protect against an investment loss. Sell when the time is right. If you identify a loser that’s not likely to turn around, it may be advantageous to sell it now. Many investors continue to hold an investment with the hope that one day it will pay off to hold it. If you’re unsure about if you should cut your losses and move on, consult a financial professional who can give you an objective opinion. Request a portfolio review. If you suspect your personal preferences and emotions are interfering with your investment decisions, defer to the experts. Ask a financial professional to conduct an objective review of your portfolio, with an eye to performance and your financial goals. Together you can look for opportunities to grow your earnings through disciplined investing strategies. portfolio. Portfolios often need to be rebalanced over time, as your individual circumstances and the individual holdings situation changes. Take an objective look at your portfolio and ensure you are comfortable with the level of risk. If company stock options are available to you, make sure you’re aware of how that may impact your overall investment strategy. While it’s good to have confidence in your company, having too much stock in one company may expose you to more risk than you intend. Be consistent. Counteract impulse buying and selling with a consistent approach to investing. Automated investing makes it easy to implement a disciplined approach, such as investing a set amount at regular intervals. This systematic investing can be a way to help minimize the effects of market volatility in a portfolio; however, you will still need to review over time to make sure the strategy fits with your overall goals. Embrace diversity. You’ll be in a better position to hang on to a sentimental favorite if the rest of your portfolio is diversified across a range of industries and assets. Diversity may provide balance in the event one or more sectors are down, but

When the Fed raised shortterm interest rates in December, did you feel obligated to buy, sell or change your investing strategy solely on that knowledge? The urge to make an investment decision is often influenced by media reports and the sentimental value you apply to those investments. This frame of thinking may lead you to make investment Jeff Jolly decisions based on your emotions, and in the long-term, emotional investing may prevent your portfolio from reaching its true potential. Focus on the long-term. Check yourself for newsdriven fear or euphoria before you call your financial professional. Remind yourself of what your long-term financial goals are, and ask yourself if making a change would help you reach them. If you still feel you need to make a change, ask your professional for their perspective. Root out unfitting investments. Do you still have your first stock certificate from mom and dad? Shares inherited from a favorite aunt? Stock from an early employer? There are all kinds of ways to acquire stocks over the years, and over time, some investments may not “fit” with your overall investment goals. It can be hard to detach from stocks with an emotional connection, but like unruly branches in your backyard, portfolios need pruning on a regular basis to perform at their best. Portfolios and individual stocks should be evaluated periodically to determine whether they are still appropriate holdings given your time horizon, risk tolerance and overall portfolio. Keep in mind that sometimes no changes are warranted, but it’s a good habit to regularly review. Strive for a balanced
