Speeches into the unknown, there is doubt about how one will fit into a new environment. As we leave our high school lives behind, we all will face doubt. However, this doubt does not have to deter us from being our best. If we acknowledge it and look at the new situation as exciting rather than intimidating, we can reach our highest altitude of success. As we take new paths, perhaps some unforeseen, I hope each of you allow yourselves to be uncomplicated, to accept imperfection, and to reach your highest potential. Congratulations, Class of 2012, and may great fortune await you. Joe Schwab Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” What he means is that it is our job to find our individual paths, not to do what others do, but to create our own ideas and dreams. The next chapter of our lives starts the second we get our diplomas. Most of us are probably nervous about the future and uncertain of what is coming. I’ll admit that I’m scared and hesitant about what to expect next, but I also have a feeling of confidence and calmness because I know I will be okay. I know we will all be okay. Whether we decide to go to college, learn a trade, or take the time to find our passions, just remember everything we were taught, and we will be fine. The skills and life lessons that we have gained here have made us ready to face life’s challenges. The faculty here has given us the tools to become the most successful people possible, and I am truly grateful for that. Today is a day of mixed feelings. There is happiness that the next chapter of our lives is starting, and there is sadness that this chapter is about to end. When I look back on

Be sure they are labeled “sunglasses” and are not just fashion glasses. Fashion glasses will reduce the glare, but do not prevent damage from UV rays. The North Haven Citizen — Friday, June 22, 2012 Continued from page 1 my days here at North Haven, a smile comes to my face thinking about the friendships we have made, the experiences we have shared that made us better people, and the faculty that challenged us to never to give up. I stand here today, in front of each and every one of my classmates, to congratulate you on your accomplishments. Getting through year after year wasn’t always the easiest thing to do, but we have done it and now the real world is that much closer to us. I will keep North Haven close to my heart, and I will do the same for everyone by whom I was surrounded. I did not get to know everyone here as well as I would have liked, but I truly mean it when I say that I wish the best of luck to everyone in everything you set out to do in your lives. I wish you happiness and success and encourage you to cherish the times that we have had together because they were special ones. It went by too fast. I wish I could have slowed time to take deep breath and look around. Let’s all remember to do that today. Our country is facing some difficult issues, but I look at these problems and I know for a fact that the people sitting here today will make a difference that will be felt all over the world. I am honored to be part of this class where everyone is uniquely talented. I look forward to seeing and hearing what everyone does because I know big things are bound to happen to the people in this class. “To help students become responsible, educated, and productive citizens who can thrive in an everchanging world” is part of our high school mission statement. As I look around, I know it holds true that we have become uniquely talented individuals who will thrive in an everchanging world. The next chapter in our lives has just begun. Are you ready? I know I am. Congratulations! Speeches courtesy of the North Haven High School administration.
