Tamarind Modern Indian in Mawson Lakes is the latest offering from chef Jwala Singh, known for his award-winning Cinnamon Club in Norwood, a go-to for serious curry lovers, Indian family get-togethers, fine diners and locals alike. With arguably the best lakeside position on Mawson Lakes Boulevard and that kind of pedigree, I had to check out Tamarind for myself, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Fish Amritsari was my starter. Bite-size pieces, delicately seasoned, crispy on the edges but succulent and juicy inside, with a fresh green chutney, and zesty radish and coriander

“kachumber” (like a punchy slaw) on the side.

It was perfectly matched by the seriously delicious freshly made alcohol-free Virgin Mojito from the drinks menu. Really impressive stuff.

Then along came the main course which absolutely floored me. The Sindhi Goat Curry was up there with the best of the best I’ve had in my many years eating curries, all around the world. It was sublime, with fresh garlic naan bread to mop up the thick, aromatic sauce, and plenty of tender meat falling off the bone, I was a happy eater.

For vegetarians the options are vast, apparently the paneer (cheese) mains are among the most popular on the menu with Indian diners.

This is not your standard suburban curry house, it has that extra zing, also reflected in the renovation and fit out, which is modern and fresh, but warm and comfortable. The service at Tamarind was perfect; professional, attentive and friendly, in fact I overheard a family at the next table talking about how impressed they were too. Really great vibes all round!

Tamarind Modern Indian are serving up world class modern Indian cuisine in Mawson Lakes at affordable prices, in beautiful surroundings, right on our doorstep.

Study Tips with

3. Establish a study space. The space where your children study at home will vary, depending on age and how much parental supervision they need. We suggest that students should study in a place free from distractions and in an area that will become their regular study space.

1. Try not to spend more than 30 minutes on each subject. The goal is not to cram, but rather to teach students the power of small, consistent efforts towards achieving larger goals. Exceeding this time limit will likely be counterproductive, as it drains students’ motivation for completing the next day’s homework.

2. Schedule a regular study time. Many families find that the morning is best for ‘Kumon time’ as it helps the child focus for the day ahead. Of course, the exact timing is up to each family to decide for themselves.

4. Be present when your children are studying. To support, we recommend that parents be in same room as their children when they are studying. Students should be working quickly, with pencils moving and eyes focussed. Breaks should be kept to a minimum so that learning can continue uninterrupted.

For further advice on how to support your children’s study at home, speak with Neeta from your local Kumon centre in Mawson Lakes. See ad opposite for a FREE trial.

As home study is a core component of Kumon, following are four tips on how parents can establish ideal study conditions and motivate their children:

PREPARING for SUCCESS DISCOVER UNIVERSITY SENIOR COLLEGE

University Senior College is an independent school for Years 10, 11 and 12, located on the campus of The University of Adelaide. USC is different. Not only are USC students enabled to achieve their best academic results, they are well prepared for university and life beyond school.

USC students learn to take responsibility for their education and discover how to work independently and with others. They benefit from a strong culture of learning and are inspired by passionate teachers who offer ongoing support and mentoring via one-on-one sessions. USC’s unique partnership with The University of Adelaide enables USC students to meet and learn from staff at The University, and to utilise their state-of-the art facilities. This takes learning to the next level.

USC provides a structure that prepares students for university. The USC timetable allows students to complete most of their independent study during the school day, and they have time for out-of-school interests or work commitments also.

The adult learning environment starts with simple things, like no school uniform and addressing staff by their first name. These behaviours assist young people to develop independence, confidence, and maturity within a diverse learning environment.

USC students are encouraged to develop and maintain a good study schedule to reach their personal best and maintain a balanced, healthy lifestyle. All USC students are assigned a mentor teacher who helps them plan their study schedule, manage their workload, and support their wellbeing.

USC provides a flexible and exciting opportunity for students who require acceleration and challenge in a rigorous learning environment. Most importantly, USC fosters an environment in which everyone wants to learn.

TRANSITION TIME

Is there such a thing as a mid-life crisis?

The psychoanalyst Elliott Jaques first suggested the concept in in 1957. He hadn't completed any research though, basing his assertion solely on a few autobiographies of famous men. He declared that that men in their mid-30s go through a depressive period when they contemplate their mortality for the first time. Jaques didn't include women in this sweeping statement, citing the menopause, claiming it "obscured" women's midlife transitions!

Gail Sheehy then popularized the idea in the 70s. She based her assertions on rudimentary research from Yale, involving just 40 male subjects. In spite of this small sample, she confidently stated that the midlife crisis starts in the 40th year and ends at 45 ½, which seems oddly specific. More recent research suggests that we all go through three to five major transitions in our lives, some voluntary and some involuntary. They might be personal, including serious illness, major career change, birth, or divorce, or they might be due to external factors such as a housefire, bankruptcy, death of a close family member or a pandemic. It can take five years or more to completely work through just one of these transitions so we could each spend 30-50% of our lives in transition. It makes a lot of sense therefore to learn some strategies for dealing with change.

FIRST, ACCEPT THAT THINGS CHANGE. Try not to fight or resist, and don't go into denial. Acknowledge the change and lean into it. Embrace the fact that although not all change is bad, even positive change brings stress. A new baby is joyful, but stressful, even if you planned for it. The same goes for starting a new business. During transition periods it helps to STICK TO ROUTINES. Go for a walk or a run every day; make time to watch your favourite TV show, play five aside or practice your piano.whatever gives your life structure. These routines act as anchors to remind us that some things are still the same, and they give our brains a chance to recharge.

EAT HEALTHILY. Stress can make us crave comfort food, or alcohol. Concentrate on buying and eating healthy foods but allow a few treats too. Exercise even if vou don’t want to.

Walking at a brisk pace clears your mind and bathes your brain in feel-good hormones. Have plenty of early nights. Set a regular bedtime and stick to it.

REGULAR SLEEP REALLY DOES REFRESH YOU AND HELP YOU THINK MORE CLEARLY.

FIND A SUPPORT GROUP. This can be a formal group, such a bereavement group, or the informal support of a few good friends or family members. No-one can do everything alone. Asking for help is a mature, sensible approach to coping with transition..

BE PROACTIVE ABOUT CHANGES. What can you do to make the transition happen more smoothly? Write the steps down you need to take and work through them one by one.

Most transitions even positive ones, involve a grieving period for the old life, where we come to terms with what we’ve lost or given up; a period of readjustment, which might seem chaotic, when we change habits, shed relationships, learn new skills, maybe even move house or continent; followed by a new beginning, where we can finally see a clear path ahead of us.

We can’t ignore transitions and we can’t will them away. When we learn to deal with change we can accept it, embrace it, and use it to move forward in our life.

When you look back you’ll be surprised how far you’ve come.

TOP TAX TIME TIPS

with RP DUNK & Co. Chartered Accountant

Raoul P. Dunk, Chartered Accountant, has been a proud member of the Salisbury business community for over 30 years. He shares his top tax tips to get the most out of your return this year.

Work related deductions

You may be able to claim a deduction for expenses you incur that relate to your work such as transport and travel, clothing, laundry and drycleaning expenses, working from home and self-education. Other deductions include the cost of managing your tax affairs and charitable donations.

Follow the three golden rules for claiming a work-related deduction:

1. you must have spent the money yourself and weren’t reimbursed

2. the expense must directly relate to earning your income

3. you must have a record to prove it (usually a receipt).

Make sure you keep receipts, diaries and documents to back up your claims and show how you calculated your deductions.

Working from home

Did you work from home at all this year? Utilise the temporary shortcut method to save time.

Created at the height of the pandemic to respond to the sudden influx of makeshift home workspaces, the working from home temporary shortcut method allows claims at the all-inclusive rate of 80 cents per work hour without the requirement of a dedicated work area. The only proof you need is a record of the number of hours you’ve worked from home, such as a timesheet.

Work out your motor vehicle expenses the right way

If you’re eligible to claim motor vehicle expenses, there are several acceptable methods to calculate them. Depending on your situation, you can use the cents per kilometre method, the logbook method or actual costs based on receipts.

Get prepared for next year

If you spent countless hours recently trying to find your receipts, or if these receipts are now faded and unreadable, come up with a better plan for next year. The ATO’s myDeductions tool can record your expenses ready for tax time next year. You can track expenses, vehicle trips and take photos of your invoices and receipts then email your data to your tax agent.

If you’re lodging your own tax return, you need to lodge it before 1 November 2023. If you use a registered tax agent, they have special lodgement schedules but you’ll need to get on their client lists before 31 October to take advantage of late lodgement dates.

For stress-free tax return preparation and lodgement, call Raoul on 8281 9688. Your first meeting is free.

Bonjour MY DEAR FRIENDS

FROM Linda Vining IN PARIS

I have been exploring France from south to north at the beginning of Europe’s summer. Perfect time to be here.

Castles and towering cathedrals feature everywhere in a country layered in history.

It’s a story of siege, barbarians, beheadings and Viking and Roman conquests. Throw in Napoleon, the French Revolution and WWII to give France an abundance of world heritage sites.

It’s interesting to see how ruins are being preserved and restored to become profitable tourist attractions. You can now pay to sit in the ruins of a Roman theatre or take a hard-stone-seat in a huge colosseum and watch a bull fight as was the case in early Roman times. (No killings these days). Tourism is now one of France’s biggest industries.

A few highlights for me were Paris of course, a museum city of captivating scale and beauty; cookery classes; Monet’s Garden; and the rocky island of Mont Saint Michel where the abbey built of granite is isolated by shifting tides.

A river cruise along the mighty Seine River introduced me to fortified towns with tiny narrow cobble-stoned streets where fast-paced e-scooters are the transport of the day.

I even got to eat snails - escargot if you please. Ask me

what I thought of this!

A liberal attitude to dogs impressed me - well behaved, street-trained pets checking out the pavements, parklands, the shops, malls and restaurants. All part of the bustle and beauty of a fascinating country. Linda
