EDITORIAL NFL PARTICIPATION HITS RECORD GROWTH With the season now well and truly up and running, I thought it was timely to write about the significant growth that the NFL has experienced this year.

I can now confirm our census data for 2017. The growth of the number of teams and participants has taken the NFL to a new level.

In total the NFL has a staggering 9,247 registered footballers and netballers. This the first time the NFL has reached the 9,000 participants milestone and I expect this to continue to grow exponentially in the future.

The breakdown of our total participation data is: 9,247 Registered players (football and netball) 6,406 Male footballers 2,841 Female participants (football and netball) 1,973 Female footballers 866 Netballers 432 Teams (football and netball) 67 Female teams 81 Netball teams 70 Senior men’s football teams 215 Junior boy’s football teams The increase in female participation has been huge, and every NFL club should be very proud of the way you have embraced female participation for both football and netball.

The more clubs who become inclusive and welcoming, the brighter the long term future is for your club. The days of relying on male participants are long gone, and clubs who are progressive thinking and open to change will become a very strong and healthy club.

I encourage all NFL clubs to challenge yourselves to think long-term and try to crystal ball the profile and position of your club in 20 plus years time. Planning is everything and although everyone is working hard to meet the needs of this weekend, it is also important to think long-term.

Your club may look very different in 20 years time, and it will be the clubs who take control of their own destiny, who will be the clubs of the future.

Make sure your club is one of them as you strive to become a strong and viable club in the future. This will allow for your children and their children to enjoy the benefits of hard work of many volunteers today.

I hope that you can also look back in the years to come with a sense of pride and satisfaction that you have contributed in a positive manner to the success of your club.

Well done everyone and enjoy your weekend of NFL football and netball.

NFL News COUGARS STILL HAVE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

Northcote Park jumped into top spot on the Meadows

Greyhounds Division 1 ladder following a comfortable 50-point win over Montmorency in Round 6.

It was the fifth-consecutive match the Cougars have won, recording their past four victories by an average of 58 points.

Not much is going wrong for the Cougars, but senior coach Matt McLennan believes his side hasn’t yet reached its full potential in 2017 – a scary prospect for the rest of the competition.

“I can still see a lot of scope for improvement in the group,” McLennan told The Northerner.

“We’re still not firing at all cylinders.”

In his first season as senior coach, McLennan was driven to create a culture at Bill Lawry Oval that would be the envy of other football clubs.

“One of my main key requirements from the footy club when I came on board was that they’ll worry about the business side of things, and I’ll worry about the footy side of things,” he said.

“Our initial thought was to really improve the culture and getting back to being just a real basic footy club. I think we’ve done that really well so far.

“We’ve got a really young list and they’re all enjoying their footy at the moment. I really wanted to make it a really happy place to be.”

Northcote Park currently has a percentage of 159.69, which is more than 20 per cent more than the next best team.

It is that strong percentage which puts it first on the ladder, above fellow 5-1 sides Macleod and Bundoora.

“We’ve been getting 100 points nearly every week, so we can definitely kick goals, but we’ve also got some very good defenders,” McLennan said of his team’s balance.

However, it’s the Cougars’ ability to transition from a different game plan than that used in 2016 which has ultimately impressed the new coach.

“We’ve changed our set ups and have put players in different positions than what they were maybe used to with the last coach,” McLennan said.

“But credit goes to the boys, they’ve hit the ground running and I really couldn’t have asked for a better start.”

Northcote Park is set up for game of the round this weekend when it hosts third-placed Bundoora at Bill Lawry Oval ahead of the Queen’s Birthday weekend break.

“It’s a little bit mouth-watering for local footy this week,” McLennan said.

“Us versus Bundoora is going to be an absolute belter, two really strong attacking teams who should both feature strongly later in the year.

“I think we’ll match up really well. Both teams have always had a really good rivalry, not spiteful, but both teams tend to lift.”

Despite sitting on top of the Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 ladder, McLennan is still aware of how close the competition is following a couple of upset results in Round 6.

“The competition is as tight as it’s ever been in a long time. You just don’t know what you’re going to get,” he said.

“I’m really cautious of poking the bear. I don’t know who the bear is each week, but very cautious of staying humble and just doing what we need to do each week.”

There’s still plenty of footy yet to be played this season, but the Cougars are hopeful they can retain a position near the top of the ladder for the remainder of the season as they look for a top-three finish to the home and away season for the first time in over a decade.

“Our early goals were to play finals and I think we’re well on the way to that, but double chance was always my personal aim,” McLennan said.

“When we’re up and going I think we’ll be difficult for anyone to stop.”

NFL News BULLS OUTLAST ROOSTERS

Bundoora took a big step in its 2017 finals assault by

downing West Preston-Lakeside by 21 points in an enthralling Round 6 clash.

In a see-sawing contest at J.E. Moore Park, the Bulls eventually seized their opportunities, outworking their opponents and finishing strongly to claim a 14.11 (95) to 11.8 (74) victory – their fifth of the season.

The win puts the third-placed Bulls just percentage off top spot, while West Preston-Lakeside remains in fourth position – with an extra game under its belt.

Bundoora led at every change and aside from surrendering the lead early in the final term, always looked the better team.

The Roosters did, however, continue to challenge throughout the game and never faded away, but ultimately were unable to maintain a lead when they took advantage of the momentum.

Brent Marshall was named Bundoora’s best following a strong shut-down role on Ahmed Saad, keeping the league’s leading goal kicker to just a solitary major while also doing plenty of attacking himself.

Gary Moorcroft (five goals) and Josh Grabowski (four) were also prominent in the win, while Matthew Dennis was the dominant big man on the ground.

For the Roosters, Andrew Walker was his usual prolific self, collecting plenty of the footy through the midfield and rebounding off half back.

Jackson Clarke, Garrett McDonagh and Jaylon Thorpe finished with two goals each, while Nathan Valladares provided important bounce and a link out of defence.

Bundoora was slicker going forward in the opening term – with clear intentions of moving the ball quickly – and adjusted to the conditions better than the home side.

Neither team was able to kick back-to-back goals in the first quarter, with the Bulls holding a slender lead at quarter time.

Grabowski’s third goal just a minute into the second quarter was a team lifting one, before Ahmed Saad capitalised at the other end with a set shot to settle the momentum.

The Roosters hit back with consecutive goals to Walker and Clarke, with the latter highlighting the term with a clever snap out of a ruck contest to draw the contest level.

It took a Moorcroft mark and goal in the goal square late in the quarter to give the visitors a deserved sevenpoint half time advantage.

The game opened up in the third quarter with plenty of run and carry on show from both sides. Despite the fast-paced game style, there were only four goals kicked in the exciting high-tempo term.

A goal to Moorcroft and a major to Isaac Muller saw Bundoora’s lead skip out to 20 points at the 13-minute mark.

As was the case all day, the Roosters were always able to fight back, as McDonagh launched at goal from long distance for it to sail through and give the home side some hope.

The goal saw an energy spike in the Roosters, with Thorpe kicking a snap around the body soon after to reel the margin back to nine points at the last change of ends.

A sense of heartbreak was emerging for the Bulls with the Roosters kicking the opening two goals of the final quarter via McDonagh and Thorpe again, giving the home side the lead for the first time since the early stages of the match.

The composure shown by Bundoora when succumbing to a three-point deficit was admirable, responding with five of the last six goals to put the game beyond doubt in what was a resilient display of footy.

NFL News ELTHAM PULLS OFF COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN

Eltham conceded a staggering 15 goals in the final quarter against Bundoora in Round 5, but on Saturday the Panthers pulled off a memorable come-frombehind victory.

With its backs against the wall, Eltham only hit the front for the first time in the contest late in the last term to record an eight-point win over previously unbeaten premiership fancy Macleod.

Trailing by 19 points at the final change, the Panthers kicked six goals to one in a dominant final quarter to register an 11.7 (73) to 9.11 (65) win.

Adam Brovedani was best afield in his return from an injury lay-off, with Anton Woods, James Reid and Tom Rogers also contributing to the win.

Josh Merkel finished with a team-best three goals, while Thomas Burns, Michael Still and Woods each chimed in with two majors.

Since its narrow Round 1 win over Greensborough on Good Friday, the Panthers had lost their next four games by an average of 10 goals. Eltham coach Paul King said he was proud of the way his side responded after the onslaught from Bundoora last week, when it slammed home 15 goals in the last quarter.

“It just adds belief that if we come with the right mindset and are willing to compete for four quarters, not just for a quarter here or there, that we can compete with most of the sides in the competition,” King said.

“It gives the boys belief they are a reasonably good side.

“But it is a very tight competition and you can’t have ups and downs.”

The win kept Eltham a game clear of relegation, with fellow bottom-three sides Greensborough and Hurstbridge also registering wins in Round 6 of Meadows Greyhounds Division 1.

Eltham faces Whittlesea on Saturday in a contest that could loom as critical to the relegation equation. After the Queen’s Birthday break it hosts West PrestonLakeside, before a trip to Hurstbridge.

However, King said avoiding demotion was not his side’s focus.

“I haven’t mentioned that (relegation) to the players yet but I think they realise where we sit,” King said.

“We’ll still have ups and downs for the rest of the year, I understand that because we are a pretty young group but we just have to be as positive as we can.”

NFL News FIVE IN A ROW FOR STARS

The Fitzroy Stars extended their winning streak to five

with a 15-point triumph over Lower Plenty in Round 6.

After falling short in their Round 1 battle, the Stars got their revenge on the Bears, with a four-goal to two last quarter getting the hosts over the line in a 15.10 (100) to 13.7 (85) result at Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval.

Richard Bamblett, Malcolm Dow, Hedley Smith and Allan Norris were among the standouts for the Stars – all playing instrumental roles to ensure their side stayed within percentage of top-two sides Diamond Creek and North Heidelberg in A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2.

Darcy Barden added to his goal kicking tally with another six majors for Lower Plenty, while Ben Paterson and Tom Keys continued to keep the visitors in the contest for most of the match.

Not even the strong wind could prevent both sides from finding the goals in an entertaining first quarter.

Vaasili Tuifao continued the momentum that saw him kick six goals at Thomastown a week prior by kicking the first of the afternoon within a minute of the first bounce.

However, a spectacular mid-air goal from Matthew Duckworth and an impressive major from Mark Favrin put the Bears in front soon after.

A goal-for-goal contest followed but it was Barden who kicked three of the last four goals for the term to give Lower Plenty a 16-point lead at the quarter time break.

Fitzroy’s second quarter put the Bears on the back foot quickly. The home side kicked the first four goals of the term, led by two from Bamblett, to send out a strong message to the visitors’ midway through the term.

Lower Plenty took back the momentum late in the quarter thanks to Barden’s fourth goal for the afternoon and a handy brace from Ben Paterson, as their side cut its deficit to three points at the main break.

An interesting third quarter followed. Despite the scores drying up there was plenty of heat between both sides throughout the tight contest.

Rivva Karpany eventually got the scoreboard ticking again with a fantastic set shot from a difficult angle just as time on commenced.

However, it was Barden again who put his side right back in the contest with two goals, including one on

the siren, to reduce the Bears’ deficit to just one point at three quarter time.

The last quarter was again goal-for-goal as the see-saw battle continued between two of the competition’s most exciting sides.

It was the Stars who were able to kick the last two majors of the game, thanks to John Hayes and Josh Wanganeen, to seal a memorable 15-point victory.

The Stars will hope to make it six wins in a row when they take on Diamond Creek at Coventry Oval in what looms as an enthralling Round 7 contest before the Queen’s Birthday break.

Having slipped two wins behind the top-three sides, Lower Plenty will be looking get back on the winners’ list and cement its place in the top-four when it takes on Watsonia at A. K. Lines Reserve.

Heidelberg West upset Epping in a thriller at Epping

Recreation Reserve to displace the Blues from the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 top four.

A goal to Jayden Shirreff in the last minute handed the Hawks a 15.20 (110) to 16.10 (106) win, to see the Hawks move into fourth place and the Blues slip to fifth.

Jarryd Coulson dominated in the ruck for the victors and finished off his work with a last term goal.

Epping had first use of the three-goal breeze and got a few easy goals when they broke through the Hawks’ defensive lines. But the game-high 27-point quarter time lead belied the closeness of the general contest.

Heidelberg West seemed to have wasted its time with the wind in the second term – trailing by 25 points late in time on. However, two outstanding passages of play narrowed the margin.

Zach Tranter booted three of his four goals in the second term. For his third he took a one-handed mark, dodged an opponent and kicked truly.

Soon after Jesse Ellis affected a smother, retrieved the ball, ran on and booted a marvellous left foot goal. It sent his team to the main break with momentum and only a 13 point deficit.

The Hawks peppered the goals after the main break into the wind and hit the lead for the first time just before midway through the stanza.

The goal to grab the lead was set up by a creative handball by the busy Brad Moore to Cameron Taylor – who was excellent across the midfield and half forward in his return from Northcote Park.

The loss of the lead seemed to spark Epping into action.

Kevin Kiernan slotted his third for the afternoon to regain the lead.

The game went up a notch. Forward pressure from Heidelberg West forwards created an easy goal for Brad McNeil.

Aaron Willitts responded with a major for the Blues before a scuffle broke out which resulted in a yellow card for each team, plus a red card for Kiernan. Taylor goaled from the incident to send Heidelberg West into the last break with a narrow lead.

A pulsating final term saw four lead changes. Kicking against the breeze and with a deficit of nine oints early 8

in the final term, Adrian Totino – one of his team’s best – sparked things for Epping.

He goaled after a give and get handball to Thomas Hughes. From the next centre bounce, he goaled from another handball receive.

Jack Marris later kicked his second of the term to put the Hawks in front.

Corey Middleton was getting better as the game wore on for Epping and caused another lead change when he goaled from the square. At that stage, the Blues appeared to have ‘got out of jail’ in a game where the Hawks had done enough to justify the win.

But Shirreff pounced on an Epping turnover deep in defence in the final minute to seal the deal. The siren rang soon after – signalling the best win for Heidelberg West for several years and jubilant celebrations followed.

“It was reward for effort,” Heidelberg coach Gary Cutler said in reviewing the game. “It was good for the boys to beat a good side – it showed what we are capable of.”

Epping coach Greg Whitcroft lamented a patchy performance. “We appeared to be flat and lacked intensity,” he said. “We had minimal chase-downs and minimal tackles.”

NFL News 2017 AFL VICTORIA METRO JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The Northern Football League’s five junior

representative sides will showcase their skills in the 2017 AFL Victoria Metro Junior Championships, commencing last Wednesday.

Over 1000 of Melbourne’s best junior footballers will don their representative jumpers over the next two weeks as part of the Championships.

Kicking off on Wednesday May 31, the AFL Victoria Metro Junior Championships is the first stage of the AFL Victoria talented player pathway.

It gives respective TAC Cup regions an opportunity to view these players at a higher level than they experience each week in club matches.

Held at local venues across Melbourne, the Championship series brings together the top junior players in the Under -14, Under-15 and Under-15 Girls age groups.

Eight metropolitan leagues will have representative teams participating this season, including sides from the Northern Football League (NFL), Eastern Football League (EFL), Essendon District Football League (EDFL), Riddell District Football Netball League (RDFNL), South East Juniors (SEJ), South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL), Western Region Football League (WRFL) and Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL).

The tournament will see all teams compete in a threeround competition, with the top two teams in Division 1 Pool A and Pool B playing off in Grand Finals.

The Under-15 Division 1A, Under-15 Division 1B and Under-15 Girls Grand Finals will be played on Saturday June 24 while the Under-14 Division 1A and Under-14

Division 1B will be held on Saturday July 1.

On the back of an impressive 2016 junior representative campaign, the NFL’s five representative teams will this year compete in Division 1 of the Championships, which provides an exciting new challenge.

The NFL will field two Under-14 Boys teams, two Under-15 Boys teams and an Under-15 Girls team.

AFL Victoria Community Football Operations Manager Gerard Ryan said the Championships provide a great opportunity for Melbourne’s top junior players to test their skills against the best players in their age group.

“The Metro Junior Championships continues to provide an opportunity for Melbourne’s best junior players to be discovered and showcase their skills against quality opposition,” Ryan said.

“A number of TAC Cup scouts will be present at games throughout the Championships and use the competition as a platform to view players for consideration in their elite development programs.

“While all leagues will be hoping to take home some silverware at the end of the series, participation in the Metro Junior Championships in itself is a fantastic achievement and something all players, coaches, umpires and staff will look back fondly on in the years to come.”

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview NO ROOM FOR COMPLACENCY Round 7 looms as a critical week in Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 ahead of the Queen’s Birthday weekend break.

A host of upsets threw a spanner in the works last week, with the bottom-three teams leading into Round 6 all recording wins last Saturday.

Eltham scored arguably the upset of the season in handing Macleod its first defeat of the year; Greensborough broke a five-game losing streak; while Hurstbridge moved within a game of the top-five after comfortably accounting for Whittlesea.

The second grand final rematch of the year takes place at De Winton Park when Macleod and Heidelberg resume hostilities, with both sides looking to rebound from a loss last week. The Kangaroos were triumphant by 51 points in the pair’s Round 2 encounter at Warringal Park.

Despite heading in as heavy favourite, Macleod couldn’t get the job done against a resurgent Eltham last Saturday, falling to a fadeout eight-point defeat at Eltham Central Park after kicking just two goals after half time.

A fifth-straight win saw Northcote Park move to the top of the ladder at Macleod’s expense and the Cougars now host Bundoora in a blockbuster at Bill Lawry Oval. The two sides both sit at 5-1, making this a massive game for both sides’ top-three hopes.

The result once again demonstrated the evenness of Meadows Greyhounds Division 1. The Roos headed into the game on a five-game winning streak, while the Panthers hadn’t won since Good Friday and were on the rebound after conceding 15 final-quarter goals to Bundoora in Round 5.

The new ladder-leader was dominant after half time last Saturday, booting 13 goals to six to run away with a 50-point win at Montmorency. It was the Cougars’ fourth-successive win in excess of seven goals, with their percentage standing at 159.69 – the highest in the division.

Ned McKeown was again a standout for Macleod at centre half back. The defender has been his side’s best in consecutive weeks, after also putting in a strong performance in the NFL’s representative win over the WRFL. Chris Long was superb in the ruck, despite his side going down.

The Cougars were able to win big despite the late withdrawal of key duo Ash Close and Paul Dirago – with four players kicking three goals or more, led by Ricky Fandrich’s four-goal haul, while Pat Considine was reliable down back in his first senior game since 2015.

Heidelberg’s erratic run of form continued last week, with the reigning premier succumbing to its fifth defeat of the season when beaten by Greensborough by 39 points at Warringal Park. It was a disappointing performance after producing their best win of the year a week prior.

In his first season at the helm, senior coach Matt McLennan continues to get an even contribution from his side, with the Cougars last week well served by Paul Steinicke, Tyson Old and Lachlan Boscarini.

Despite the efforts of Charles Gaylard, Marcus Marigliani and Tom Sullivan, the Tigers were goalless in the first term and contained to just 3.6 in the opening three quarters by the Boro.

Bundoora took another massive stride forward under Ricky Dyson in Round 6, outlasting West PrestonLakeside in a 21-point triumph at J.E Moore Park.

The Tigers remain within close proximity of the topfive but need to improve significantly to remain a contender. That begins this week in skipper Michael Brunelli’s 150th game. The match signals the beginning of a month-long litmus test, where the Tigers are opposed to the competition’s top-four sides in consecutive matches.

It was the Bulls’ fourth win on the road this season, having also won away at Heidelberg, Montmorency and Eltham. With seven home games to play in the final 11 weeks, the Bulls would be extremely well placed should they score another win on the road this Saturday.

Brent Marshall did a wonderful shutdown job on Ahmed Saad last week and also offered plenty of drive from defence. Gary Moorcroft and Josh Grabowski combined for nine of their side’s 14 goals, while Matty Dennis and Dom Nixon both continued their good form.

Hurstbridge and Greensborough are each on the hunt for consecutive wins when they square off at Ben Frilay Oval.

The Bridges’ continued their impressive return to the top flight with a 45-point home win over Whittlesea. The home side kicked 11 goals in the opening half and held a comfortable advantage from quarter time onward.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview It was an even performance by Trevor Little’s side, with every player contributing. Sean Jellie and Jack Grimes found plenty of the ball, while six players kicked multiple goals – led by Mitch Burton who kicked four, including three in the final quarter.

This week looms as a vital game for the Bridges, who could push into the top-five with a win or alternatively slip to bottom-place with a loss.

Greensborough made a swift response from its worst performance of the year, bouncing back to comfortably beat Heidelberg. Despite the result, the Boro remained in 10th place after Eltham and Hurstbridge also scored Round 6 wins.

Ricky Mullins was immense in the Boro’s maiden win of the season and capped his best afield performance with a game-high three goals. Jack Johnston was again instrumental off half back, while Billy Bedford’s move forward netted two goals.

Despite their 1-5 record, the Boro’s healthy percentage is holding them in good stead and a win this week could move them within a game of the top-five, putting them back in finals contention when play resumes from next week’s bye.

Whittlesea is on the hunt for its first home win of the season when it hosts Eltham at the Whittlesea Showgrounds.

With Andrew Fairchild, Matt Dornauf and Riley Dyson all missing from their side, the Eagles were disappointing in last week’s loss to Hurstbridge – their first defeat on the road for the season.

Matthew Atta and Paul Higgins were their side’s standout performers in the 45-point defeat, while Jaron Murphy was one of his team’s leading possession winners and finished with an equal team-high three goals, along with Justin Sherman and Janan Daniel.

Like a host of teams, Round 7 looms as a vital one for the Eagles who sit both a win off the top-five and bottom-place. A win this week can re-affirm their finals credentials or, alternatively, a loss could consign them to the foot of the ladder.

Eltham showed great character in last week’s upset win over Macleod, giving the club its first home triumph of the season in its fourth attempt.

The Panthers looked in trouble at the final break when they trailed by three goals, but stormed home to kick six goals to one in the final quarter to win a lowscoring contest by eight points.

Adam Brovedani was outstanding in his return from injury, while James Reid continued his strong return from a knee injury.

Anton Woods’ strong performance included two goals while Josh Merkel provided a strong target and finished with three majors.

The Panthers will hope that last week’s final-term performance becomes the benchmark moving forward – demonstrating that their best football is certainly as good as any in the competition.

West Preston-Lakeside and Montmorency close out the round at J.E Moore Park, where both sides will be looking to return to the winners’ list following home losses last week.

The Roosters played out a classic against Bundoora, hitting the front early in the last quarter before being overrun in the closing stages.

The result saw them lose touch with the top-three, although they remain two wins and percentage clear inside the top-five, albeit having played an extra match.

Andrew Walker put in another starring role for the Roosters, despite his side going down by 21 points.

The former Carlton star has been his side’s best player in each of the past two weeks and has featured among the better players in six of his seven appearances.

Walker received good support from Shaun Gannon and Jackson Clarke, while Nathan Valladares was solid down back – again demonstrating his ability to have an impact at either end of the field.

Montmorency suffered its third-consecutive defeat in last week’s heavy defeat to Northcote Park, but stayed a game inside the top-five courtesy of other results going its way.

The Magpies were the far better side in the opening quarter, but proved to be their own worst enemy – managing just one goal from seven scoring shots in the first term to head into quarter-time with only a four-point lead.

They were outplayed after the main break, with injuries playing their part, however they had few solutions to stopping Northcote Park’s small forwards in the second half.

Mark Deaves finished with six of his side’s nine goals, to take his tally for the season to 20, while Pat Fitzgerald, Josh Slattery and Matt Hunt all tried hard.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 HURSTBRIDGE This week we’re home again against Greensborough.

SENIORS: A magnificent way to start the day with our development team getting their first win of the year.

Well done Tanka and boys on a hard-fought victory.

This certainly gave our seniors confidence in a game we knew was going to be a big one after Whittlesea had beaten Bundoora and West Preston in the early rounds. Our boys were on from the start, kicking seven first-quarter goals to open a three-goal lead. We really acquitted ourselves well and had a lot of numbers at each contest. The second also was pleasing but Whittlesea were threatening as they are a very quick and classy team. We went into half time up slightly.

Really proud of the boys in the second half in what I call an exciting brand of footy, but also defending really well. In the end we were able to get the four points against a dangerous side. Today we take on Greensborough are much better than their ladder position suggests. If we can give the same effort as last week we will be in the contest for a long way.

SENIORS: A week is a long time in football! The boys bounced back from last week’s disappointing defeat with a 39-point win victory over the old enemy Heidelberg. We looked like a completely different side last Saturday, our pressure was through the roof, and we proved we can be damaging going forward and our best footy is more than adequate. Ricky Mullins was incredible, Jack Johnston continued his stellar season off half-back, while Billy Bedford’s move forward has opened up our game greatly. It was pleasing to see many of our young players, fresh out of the under-19s, stand up and be counted for when the club needed them most. Brody Tickell, Ben Pannam, Michael Croxford and Tom Bevan-Shannon all won crucial moments of the game, and continue to look comfortable at the level. Whilst this win was a relief, it has now set the standard for where we need to be, week in, week out. We are looking forward to another challenge against the in-form Hurstbridge.

year of Division 1. The game should have been wrapped up at three-quarter time but due to some missed opportunities around goal we left the game a little open for a great last quarter. With stellar performances from Joel Dale, Mitch Thompson, Callum Cook and, only back from the other side of the world for five minutes, Tommy Grimes really taking control of the midfield.

Our two talls in Paul Johnston and Jazz Lediott allowed us to charge away in the end with another outstanding performance by Josh ‘Plugger’ Saw, slotting five majors for the day and closing the game out. Proud day for the club.

Tom Brindley was excellent down back, while Matt Haynes provided plenty of run through the middle of the ground. Dab Shaw booted three up forward, including the eventual match-winner. It’s imperative we bring the right attitude each and every week, because any team on their day can make you pay for a relaxed approach.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 MACLEOD We are back at De Winton Park today, hosting our old rivals Heidelberg.

LAST WEEK: The seniors dropped their first game of the season, going down to Eltham by eight points after leading for most of the contest. A six-goal final quarter from the home side gave our boys a reality check. Our forwards did not put enough pressure on Eltham’s defence which set up numerous attacking moves and our midfield was second to the ball. Only a lion-hearted effort from Chris Long in the ruck and Ned McKeown at centre half-back provided any positives. The reserves continued their winning form with a sound 48-point win with a couple of players now pushing for senior selection. Matty Veszpremi, Joel Kidd and Simon Lovett were among the best. The under-19s came from behind to win by 12 points, thanks to standout performances from Seb Latina and James Condello.

NETBALL: Macleod 1 went down to Heidelberg while Macleod 2 edged out Watsonia.

150 FOR BRUISER: Bruiser arrived at Heidelberg from the Northern Knights in 2009 and played 19s before a handful of reserve and senior games. Unfortunately he missed out on being part of the undefeated senior premiership team that year. The disappointment of a few losing grand finals and a badly broken ankle in 2014 were consigned to history when Bruiser lifted the 2016 premiership cup in his first season as captain of the footy club in 2016. His preparation is second to none at our footy club and his on-field and off-field leadership makes him a great role-model to our young playing group. Congratulations Bruiser – looking forward to the next 150.

LAST WEEK: The less said about last week the better.

The twos were still going down by the narrowest of margins and our seniors struggled to have an impact against a very determined Greensborough outfit.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 NORTHCOTE PARK This week we host Bundoora.

SENIORS: After our slow start, and Monty’s bad kicking, we could have been in real trouble at quarter time on the scoreboard. The second quarter was better and at half time we went in with a three-point advantage. A totally different structure up forward, and better use of the ball seemed to make scoring a lot easier in the third and fourth quarters. Small forwards Fandrich, Ricardi, Campbell and Barnes-Webb all hit the scoreboard with some great goals. Terrific games

by Steinicke in the ruck, and Mills in defence. After two years since his last senior game, it was great to have Patty Considine back in the team. This week against Bundoora, we must come to play right from the first bounce.

RESERVES: The reserves had a solid win, in a very even performance across the board. Led up front by leading goal kicker on the day Tommy Jackson, who finished with five goals fresh from his overseas holiday. Best players were Costanzo, Dezan, the Waldron twins, Cobs and ever reliable Matty George.

BUNDOORA Today we travel to the Bill Lawry Oval to play Northcote Park.

SENIORS: It was an exciting game to watch against West Preston-Lakeside at J.E. Moore Park. From the first bounce to the last siren our lads were thankfully switched on. My biggest fear was how we would contain Ahmed Saad, who has been brilliant this season. However, Nipper Marshall played a marvellous backman’s job, playing hard and close and kept Ahmed out of the game, which was a large reason why we won this game. With a dry ground it also allowed Matty Dennis to play a large part in our win. Best players: Nipper Marshall, Josh Grabowski, Matty Dennis, Gary Moorcroft and Dom Nixon.

RESERVES: It was a loss, but with so many players out through injury it wasn’t a bad effort. The way we played in the final quarter and kicking a few goals, we showed some signs of gelling as a team and it will be interesting to see how we go against the Cougars today. Our best players were Tyla Barrow, Leroy Santoro and Blake Poyser.

UNDER-19: It looked at one stage like the under-19s bus had failed to make the ground until half time. After half time the bus arrived with a new team, and a rev up from the coach Joe Amad – he himself under a bit of pressure, as the president had been heard to say the director’s were a hundred per cent behind him.

We all know what that means. With the boys actually combining and playing like a team, they were starting to turn things around. After half time they kicked 13 goals to Monty three goals. Great games by Augustus, Punshon in the ruck, DeSando who was everywhere, Ahmad and the skipper just to name a few. Let’s hope this game is the turning point of the season.

NETBALL: The top team had a close loss. Team 4 had a bye, while Team 9 were easy winners.

PAST PLAYERS DAY: Today against old foes Bundoora we welcome all our past premiership players to their reunion day. I am sure all these legends will have some great stories to tell.

UNDER-19: What a win. Milad Almahtrah’s nine goals reminded me of a seal being fed fish. One after the other he was fed the ball by his teammates who really took West Preston-Lakeside to the cleaners. Let’s see if we can keep up this high standard of play today against Northcote Park. MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE Today it’s Lakies Day. TODAY: We welcome all the Lakies Legends in particular to celebrate 40 years since the 77 flag. Make the most of our last home game for four weeks as we head for a break then on the road for three weeks.

LAST WEEK: A great crowd came to watch a great game of footy which unfortunately we ended up on the wrong end when the siren sounded. The twos got back on the winners’ list with a spirited display. The under19s keep plugging away with some new faces popping up. All results showed that we are entering one of the most even seasons in years so a win today will see us stay with the top half or end up back in the pack.

AROUND THE TRAPS: Alex may have been wrong.

Sat in front of a couple of Americans last Saturday trying to explain the rules but they gave up on me. A lot of foreign objects found by messsrs Hyde and O’Neill in there clean up last week.

MONTMORENCY This week we travel to West Preston-Lakeside to take on the Roosters.

SENIORS: As they say, it was a game of contrasts.

In the first half we were right in it against Northcote Park. But after half time the wheels came off, and the Cougars were allowed to run riot. Injuries played their part but credit must go to the opposition who showed Mont how to play our own ground. We had a few players who tried hard all day, while others flashed in and out of the game. It’s still early days in the season, so the boys have the chance to regroup and make a major assault on the top five. Up to you boys.

RESERVES: Another hard day at the office for the twos who succumbed to a classier outfit. The boys have been hamstrung by indifferent numbers for the last few weeks, but keep having a crack.

UNDER-19: Despite the result last Saturday, the thirds are drawing closer to achieving a win.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 WHITTLESEA This week we host Eltham.

SENIORS: A disappointing loss last week against Hurstbridge and the boys are keen to turn their form back around today against Eltham. With some handy inclusions this week, coach Jim Atkins will be looking for the boys to return to the “Whittlesea” brand of football which has seen them knock over top sides already this season. Jim praised Matt Atta for his efforts and continued good form last week. He was also pleased to play his fourth debutant for the season, Jimmy Minogue, who he says has a bright future.

RESERVES: After a competitive start, the boys fell away in second half for a disappointing loss last week.

Captain Mitch Taplin said Jack Dyson was a great target in the forward 50, whilst Lee Hughes did a really solid job on a quality forward. Mitch said he’s hoping he and his teammates can get their season back on track today against Eltham.

UNDER-19: With a bye last week, Simon Young and his boys had valuable extra time to work on some improvements at training before taking on Eltham

ELTHAM Today we journey to Whittlesea ahead of the bye.

SENIORS: A week in football is a long time it would seem. What a difference this week with the team never giving up on the day and what a great quarter the last was, coming from 19 points down at three-quarter time to score against Macleod by eight points in the end. Now we have to carry the same effort forward this week or it will be all in vain.

RESERVES: The reserves found Macleod just too strong on the day and we will look to bounce back to the form we showed the previous week, this week.

UNDER-19: The under-19s’ winning run came to a stop by 12 points. A determined Macleod coming from behind in the second half, scoring nine goals to our five.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 - Preview TOP-THREE BREAK CLEAR Round 7 of A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 is headlined by a clash between two sides on five-game winning streaks.

Diamond Creek hosts the Fitzroy Stars at Coventry Oval in the game of the round. It looms as a massive battle in the fight for a top-two place, with the two sides and North Heidelberg all locked on five wins.

The Demons retained top spot after another impressive victory over Watsonia last week. A sevengoal to one opening term kick-started the Demons, who went on to win by 85 points despite key forward Jess Cosaitis missing the clash at Coventry Oval.

Six Demons kicked multiple goals, with the best being Tyler Barnes and Brad Perry, who both ended the game with four goals. It was a fine return for Perry who was playing his first game since Round 2.

The Stars avenged their Round 1 loss to Lower Plenty by beating the Bears in last week’s rematch at Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval – although they did have to recover from a 16-point deficit at quarter-time.

Leading by one point at the last change, the Stars kicked four goals to two in the last to seal the victory.

Vaasili Tuifao backed up his six-goal haul in Round 5 with three majors, with Max Maynard, Allan Norris, Malcolm Dow (three goals) and Hedley Smith all in the best.

Second-placed North Heidelberg will be gunning for another victory when it takes on old rival Lalor at Shelley Reserve.

The Bulldogs notched up their 11th-consecutive home victory in their 128-point win over Panton Hill. Brent Harvey sent the football world abuzz by booting nine goals and accumulating 54 disposals.

One downside for the Bulldogs was the exclusion of ruckman Michael Florance, who will miss a few weeks after cutting his index finger. The Bulldogs will hope Florance is not out for too long because at his best he is one of the most dominant ruckmen in the league.

Lalor let slip a golden opportunity to win its second game of the season in Round 6. The Bloods were leading by 38 points at three quarter time, but conceded eight goals in the final term as Thomastown pinched an unlikely victory.

Anthony Velicki was moved into the forward line and the tactic worked as the big defender kicked two goals.

Mark Roumanos also kicked multiple goals in his first game of the season, while Jhye Baddeley-Kelly was

once again the Bloods’ best player.

Lalor will be disappointed with the result but would be happy with its first three quarters. If it can recapture that form for four quarters against North Heidelberg, the match will be closer than expected.

Fourth-placed Lower Plenty makes the short trip to Watsonia in the hope of keeping hold of its position in the top-four.

Despite retaining a host of the team that played in Division 1 last season, the Bears have taken some time to adjust to life in second division, with last week’s defeat to the Fitzroy Stars their third loss of the season.

Tom Keys was the Bears’ best performer against the Stars, while Darcy Barden booted six goals to increase his tally to 20 majors for the season. Ben Paterson also continued his good form and now has eight goals in six matches.

Watsonia will be looking to regroup after a big loss against Diamond Creek. The Saints’ desire could not be faulted against the competition’s top-placed side but conceded 150 points or more for the second-straight week.

A positive for the Saints was the form of Jeremy Bennett, Allan Young and Adrian Alfonsi. The trio kicked eight of the Saints’ nine goals, while Ben Anderson and Anthony Cardamone both won plenty of the ball.

The final game of the weekend sees Panton Hill take on Thomastown in a game both sides would consider winnable.

The Redbacks suffered their second-consecutive 100-point defeat in Round 6. They took it up to the Bulldogs for the opening three quarters but ran out of gas in the last quarter on the back of limited rotations – conceding eight-unanswered goals.

Matthew Hunt and Matthew Fowler can be proud of their efforts, while Damian Noorman kicked three goals.

Thomastown had to show great character to beat Lalor in Round 6. At three quarter time the Bears trailed by 38 points and had kicked an inaccurate 2.13 (25). They were again wasteful in the final term, kicking nine behinds, but also kicked eight goals to secure the win.

Daniel Chadwick was best on ground, while James Rizzolio kicked three goals. These sides last met in the final round of last season, where Nick Horman booted five goals to give Thomastown a 17-point victory.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 DIAMOND CREEK This week we host the Fitzroy Stars ahead of the Queen’s Birthday weekend break.

SENIORS: Another strong performance at home against Watsonia, although we felt we weren’t quite at our best. It’s encouraging to see a group continuing to evolve, especially with our goal kicking being well spread among the group. Great to see Tyler, Pez, Pross, Tye, Jai and J Lo among the best.

RESERVES: The boys had a comfortable win over Watsonia. It was a well rounded team effort. Votes were had to give as everyone chipped in with their fair share.

Looking forward we hope to keep playing great footy against the Fitzroy Stars this weekend and go into a well earned week off.

UNDER-19: The under-19s had a hard-fought win by eight points over Mill Park. Fielding our youngest side for the year against an older and bigger opposition, the boys were up to the challenge. Although we didn’t play at our best due to some poor disposal and inaccurate kicking at times, we showed a lot of character and

In the second we completely outplayed the Bears and went into the main break a couple of goals up. Into a stiff breeze in the third we still managed to level the term and managed to hang on after squandering a few opportunities in the last quarter. A 15-point win against quality opposition is not something we should take for granted. Maxy again was dominant down back, while Jacko, Hoody, Hedley and Alboy all played well against very good opponents.

RESERVES: Once again were up against it with a few late withdrawals making it really difficult for our boys.

discipline coming from behind at half time to knock them off, something that had been lacking in the losses we had in the last two weeks. Hopefully the boys continue to build on this win and learn from what it took to get across the line.

NETBALL: DC1 – had the bye. DC2 – Taking on the top team saw us bring home a fantastic win, 35-27. DC2 are now on top of the ladder. DC3 – A penalty goal on the siren saw the game result in a draw, 27-27. DC4 – Took on the top team, playing an absolute blinder and winning by 10. DC5 – A good final quarter still wasn’t enough to try to repair the damage that was done 20-36.

NETBALL: Had a mixed night with the first side having a sensational win against Bundoora 53-47, the second side went down to Thomastown 15-28 while the third side were beaten by Heidelberg 14-29.

JUNIORS: Our Under-9s had a fantastic game on Sunday after the highlight of playing on the MCG on Saturday night at the Dreamtime game. They were absolutely fantastic charging around in the Stars jumpers. This week we will be having our Auskickers play at half time to initiate something we want to do against Diamo for many years to come.

TOOL OF THE WEEK: The 3KnD Fitzroy Stars Friday Football Show was dismal this week with Marky, Luke and Hoody dropping the ball without their spiritual leader SM-C. The ratings were at an all-time low and Lukey needs sleep, Hoody some coffee and Marky needs a break.

played a big part in the history of the North Heidelberg FC. TODAY: Special focus will be on the 1987 senior and reserves premiership teams so to all in attendance we hope you have a great day from all committee, players and members of the modern day Bulldogs.

SENIORS: Went through the motions in the first half before clicking into gear with plenty sharing the footy.

You could argue we need to be more ruthless but in the end you would take a 130-point win. Today we are against our old foes Lalor, a scene of many great matches over the years which our past players will be watching on with great interest. Whilst the Bloods are struggling at present there is no room for complacency.

DEVELOPMENT: Similar to the big boys, struggled early on but fitness got us home in the end. Still plenty of room for improvement despite being 5-1. Keep training as the pressure for spots will heat up later in the year plus there is an opportunity for many at senior level, particularly with some injuries in the ones at the minute.

UNDER-19: Slow out of the blocks and paid the price.

LALOR This week we visit North Heidelberg who has started the year off well.

TODAY: We need to play the sort of footy we know we can to be competitive this week so let’s get behind the boys and help them along.

RESERVES: Lalor took on Thomastown at Lalor last Saturday in what was a must-win game for both sides.

The reserves kicked of the day with a great start yet succumbed to Thomastown’s quick ball movement in the second half going down by 15 goals.

SENIORS: The senior side started with a bit more flair with a strong wind and was able to head Thomastown by three goals at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw Thomo waste opportunities, kicking two goals and seven points, with Lalor kicking one goal against the wind setting them up for a big third quarter effort. Good goals from Morrison and Smith saw the Bloods take the ascendancy, kicking clear with a 28

The boys were on their toes and looking for their second win of the year until Thomo started to win the ball from the centre, banging through four uncontested goals in around eight minutes stunning the Bloods.

They took the ascendancy and banged on eight goals for the quarter leaving Lalor thinking what the hell just happened. This was one that should not have got away.

Everyone needs to have a good look at themselves moving forward as we can’t afford to let games slip away like this.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 PANTON HILL This week we host Thomastown.

SENIORS: Another really solid effort from the guys against the benchmark of the competition in North Heidelberg. We hung tough for three quarters with only two on the bench for most of the day and a few guys finishing the day not really being able to run. In the last quarter we simply had nothing else to give.

RESERVES: Probably our best overall performance this season based purely on effort. Our third quarter was our only let down with our contested footy dropping away. Once again we have proven we can mix it with the best for periods of games. Obviously we’re disappointed with any loss but we were really pleased with our team work rate for the most part. Well done to Micky Linton, Barts, Bailin, Oscar, Pratty and Flacky.

UNDER-14 GIRLS: Great win again by the girls. They are creating momentum heading into the middle part of the season.

THOMASTOWN It was the battle of fiercest rival as we ventured to

Sydney Cresecent to take on Lalor. A triumphant day unfolded SENIORS: A bizarre game of footy. We were outplayed

by Lalor in the first three quarters, restricted to just two goals up until three-quarter time and 38 points in arrears. However, the boys kicked into gear and played the brand of footy we pride ourselves on in the final term. An 8.9 last quarter saw us get over the line against a very gallant opponent. Although not happy with the way we played, we are happy with the character showed and extremely happy to keep in touch with the top four.

RESERVES: We knew Lalor was not going to be an easy adversary and that certainly proved to be the case.

We started the game poorly and were left with a lot of work to do. To our credit we worked a lot harder as the game wore on and pulled away to record a solid victory.

NETBALL: Thomastown 1 got off to a shaky start against Fitzroy Stars. It was not the best performance from the ladder leaders, but they were lucky to scrape home with a 13-goal win. Thomastown 2 enjoyed the 36

UNDER-12: Our under-12 team played Kinglake at home. The team has been developing extremely well over the last four weeks and have been working very hard on game plan drills at training. Well all their determination and persistence paid off by recording our first win of the season. It’s a well deserved win for the team and they did play as a team, plenty of linking hand passes creating run and open space which gave us plenty of options up forward. The backline played tight when necessary and ran hard when we had the ball. Our on ballers won the majority of centre clearances and defended extremely well. Overall it was a team effort which bought together the win. Great work team we are all so proud of your efforts. This win is only the beginning!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win – Roger Bannister.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 WATSONIA Have to start off with a big thanks to Jodie Larkin on

behalf of the Tuesday night meals club for her slow cooked, Asian spiced spare ribs last week. Absolutely bang on!

SENIORS: We knew we were going to be in for a tough one against Diamond Creek last week and that prediction was spot on. It’s usually difficult to find positives in big losses but the coaching staff, although obviously unhappy with the loss, couldn’t fault the effort against a well drilled, highly skilled opponent. In fact the two people who were most upset during the game were the Diamond Creek timekeeper who’d had enough of Dougie’s singing and poor Kade who spilt his bubble mixture, much to Scooter’s amusement.

RESERVES: The twos were also outclassed earlier in the day but, a lot like the ones, had a crack for the majority of the game and probably deserved more than the two goals they scored. Well done to a couple of blokes who’ve been on the fringe all year in Forcer and Drewy who showed that you have to make the most of your opportunities when you get them.

LOWER PLENTY The club has a big game before the bye against Watsonia away.

FOOTBALL: We will be looking to get back on the winners’ list this week. It’s proving to be a really even season and we are looking to really push after the break.

SOCIAL: The club has had a wonderful few weeks of events and that continued on the weekend with a fantastic Rock Qwiz and that will continue with the Past Players lunch on the 17th June and the Black Tie Ball on the 24th June, which promises to be a wonderful night.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 - Preview UPSET SEES HAWKS IN THE FOUR Round 8 looms as a big weekend in Heidelberg Golf

Club Division 3 as a logjam builds at the top of the ladder ahead of the Queen’s Birthday weekend break.

Heidelberg West snared a late goal to defeat Epping at Epping Recreation Reserve in a highly-entertaining game in Round 7.

A Jayden Shirreff goal in the final minute secured a fourpoint win for the Hawks and moved them into fourth spot on the ladder at the expense of the Blues. It was the best win by Heidelberg West for the season – having previously beaten Kilmore, Laurimar and Reservoir.

Banyule notched up the double-century against Reservoir at R.J. Brockwell Oval in a 31.14 (200) to 3.3 (21) win. James Kroussoratis booted a season-high 12 goals in the big victory, equalling the record for most goals kicked in a senior match at R.J. Brockwell Oval.

Joseph Spicuglia justified his promotion from the reserves for the Mustangs to be one of his team’s best, along with Dylan Potter.

St Mary’s won every quarter on the way to a 47-point win over Kilmore at Whatmough Park.

The Burra had five multiple goal kickers and, interestingly, had a larger margin than the 22-point win by Banyule over Kilmore in the previous round. This indicates St Mary’s is a genuine contender after fourconsecutive wins.

Kilmore would have replaced St Mary’s in the top-four had it won. Although disappointed with the loss, the Blues are becoming a more competitive team away from home in 2017.

South Morang kicked 6.4 to 1.1 with the wind in the first stanza against Mernda at Waterview Recreation Reserve. From there, the Lions led all the way to win by 44 points.

Both teams looked significantly different than in recent weeks – with Darren Gresham, Luke Jackson, Kane Maghamez and Paul Harrison all gone from the Lions.

On top of a long injury list, the Demons have lost Les Adams and Matthew Golledge for a large chunk of the season after receiving hefty suspensions.

“We’re depleted at the moment but the boys are having a crack,” Mernda coach Steve Power said.

The loss puts Mernda two games outside the top-four.

Heidelberg West faces another test in Round 8 action when its hosts Banyule at Heidelberg Park.

The ledger stands at 6-0 in favour of Banyule since the Bears joined the Northern Football League in 2015. The closest the Hawks have run the Bears is 17 points in their most recent clash at R.J. Brockwell Oval last year.

Banyule is likely to be tipped to remain unbeaten in this one, although the Hawks will be carrying strong momentum from last week’s win. Heidelberg West may need a victory to remain in the top-four.

Laurimar travels north to J.J. Clancy Reserve for the first time to take on Kilmore. The Power will be buoyed by their breakthrough win before the bye and will seek atonement after losing their Round 1 encounter at Laurimar Reserve by 11 points.

The Blues would be in the four or on the verge of it with a victory and should be favoured to win after being competitive against top sides in recent weeks.

Reservoir has been beaten soundly by the top-two sides in the past fortnight and now faces third-placed St Mary’s at Crispe Park.

The Burra will be the hottest of favourites to win this clash, while the Mustangs will be trying to build some momentum for games against lower-placed teams after the Queen’s Birthday bye.

A side interest in the game will be that the Burra will feature several ex-Reservoir premiership players, including 2017 recruits Joel Buckley and Leigh Sullivan.

The round is headlined by the Epping versus South Morang tussle at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. The Blues were disappointed to let last week’s home game against the Hawks slip.

Having had a run under their belt after not playing the previous two Saturdays, they should be better placed to take on the Lions. But they will have to contend this week without Kevin Kiernan who was red carded in Round 7.

With St Mary’s likely to boost its percentage this week, South Morang will probably need to win in order to hold on to second spot on the ladder. The Blues would most likely move back into the top-four with a win.

LAST WEEK: An amazing come from behind win against Epping last week put smiles on lots of faces throughout the Heidelberg West community. Just to see how much enjoyment a win can bring makes us all think that the time we put in and sacrifices we make are worth it. Calls, texts and support rolled in after Jayden Perko kicked the match winner with 20 seconds left in the game. It still brings a smile to my face thinking about it. The win was made even more special considering the absence of star recruit Masaki Miki and co-captain Justin Bentley, unable to continue after carrying an injury into the game. Best on honours went to Coulson who dominated the ruck and kicked two crucial goals. He was well supported by returning West players Brad Moore and Squizzy Taylor. Ben Kennan also was resolute in defence repelling many Epping attacks.

All players played well. The reserves unfortunately lost but look to bounce back this week.

BEVERLEY ROAD BATTLE: This week we set our

SENIORS: We were able to get away to a good start, kicking eight goals to none against the breeze in the first quarter. A nasty head knock prior to half time saw an early end to the second and we wish all the best in recovery to the Reservoir player taken to hospital. We were able to pick up where we left off in the second half, with Rata equalling the record for most seniors goals kicked at R.J. Brockwell Oval with 12.

We want to make a special mention to Reservoir who, despite the scoreboard and the loss of a player, played on manfully and showed great spirit right until the final siren and we wish them all the best for the remainder of the season.

RESERVES: We took on Reservoir for the second time for the year and we went into the game expecting a similar result to Round 1. With Borgy losing another toss it was a really poor first quarter with Reservoir 42

sights on neighbours Banyule in what shapes up to be a great game. The Bears have had the better of us in our past clashes and a few of their supporters have been a bit lippy enjoying a beverage with the Marathonians.

We expect to have a couple of players return this week hope to put our best foot forward and claim Beverley Road bragging rights.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Glamour couple # 4 Brad Moore and Jacinda Pappas have both returned to the nest in great form. Jacinda has joined the netball and her enthusiasm is unrivalled and Brad’s football has taken off where it left. Brad was instrumental in the win against Epping last week making everybody stoked to have him back, especially his Nan Val.

The third quarter was still a battle but there were glimpses of good football, but still nowhere near enough effort and commitment. To Reservoir’s credit the amount of improvement since Round 1 was unbelievable. Finally things clicked in the last quarter with the game opening right up. It was a good effort to kick 12 goals in the last.

UNDER-19: A combination of playing at the Cave, the hunger to win our first game and the return of a few big names had us raring to play. We knew we could run North Heidelberg off their feet if we were willing to put in the effort. That started with Pat in the ruck, who put in a massive shift coming up from the colts to give us first use of the footy. Sean and Ryan also seamlessly fitted into the side. Silky rarely missed a target, while Ben Nethercote put in a best on ground performance. The backline were solid and the forwards kicked a winning score and the coach was refreshed after serving us arguably the biggest spray in the history of football last round. A good way to get our first win of the season.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 KILMORE We host Laurimar this week and want to head into the break 4-4. We will have to be at our best this week to bounce back and get back on the winners list.

SENIORS: We headed down to St Mary’s knowing a good start was the key for us, but we allowed them to jump us early. Our tackle pressure was right down and we allowed them to dictate the game to us. We moved the footy well in patches, but we needed to maintain that for longer periods to be a chance. St Mary’s were very disciplined and stuck to their plan and came away 47-point winners.

RESERVES: Having not yet won a game and heading down to meet the undefeated top team in St Mary’s, it was always going to be a difficult task! Entering the game with only 19 men, we played freely and found the brand of football we’d been searching for all season, heading into the first break three goals up! Only four points down at half time, we knew they would hit us hard which they did. We battled all day and went down by over 10 goals but our boys showed a lot of fight and

LAURIMAR This week we to travel to Kilmore.

SENIORS: We welcomed our neighbour Mernda to the Powerhouse in Round 6 for a much anticipated first meeting. The first quarter was played in pretty much end to end football with both sides hitting the scoreboard and testing the opposition’s defence and the scores at quarter time had Mernda leading by a solitary point. The second quarter started in much the same fashion however the young Laurimar midfield started to cause some turnovers through constant pressure which allowed us to enter our forward 50 quickly which gave our forwards the advantage they needed to be dangerous. Whilst the quarter was relatively even on the scoreboard, the boys went in with a slight lead at half time and a lot of belief. The third quarter was the game breaker for us with our backs getting on top and limiting Mernda’s chances whilst our midfield continued to drive us forward consistently. We broke away to a 22-point lead at three-quarter time due to our whole ground pressure and being prepared to push ourselves harder than we have in any other game.

KILMORE 1 NETBALL: Played North Heidelberg on Friday night. This is the second time the girls have come up against this team. The girls had a strong fourth quarter but unfortunately they lost by four goals. Keep working hard girls and we will get them next time.

KILMORE 2 NETBALL: Had a nail biting finish, winning the game by one goal. This team is showing more and more improvement every week and they are all so willing to learn. All your efforts girls are being seen on the court. The girls are looking for each other more on the court, they are taking their time and playing their own game. Well done to every player, it was such an exciting game to watch, even if you nearly gave me a heart attack in the last two minutes.

KILMORE 3 NETBALL: Had a tough game coming up against Northcote Park 3, being ladder leaders. The girls took to the game strong but were unable to come away with the win.

The final stanza saw us defending strongly as Mernda gave it everything they had and we scored on the rebound a number of times which made their job even more difficult and we were able to keep them at arms length until the final siren to record our first ever win as a senior side. Hopefully this builds a belief that when we execute the game plan we can compete strongly and we can maintain some momentum into the games after our Round 7 bye.

RESERVES: Our game against Mernda was a game of some real highs and lows. At times we showed how we can link up as a team and used the ball well but then there were some pretty poor passages throughout the game. As a team we need to aim for consistency with concentration and effort for four quarters. We do have a lot to work with which is very encouraging, we just need to work on consistency.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 RESERVOIR In our second meeting against Banyule our boys tried

hard, giving 110 percent and not letting the scores affect their efforts.

SENIORS: After losing a key player late in the second with a very lengthy pause for injury, the boys came out renewed and determined, responding with two consecutive goals early in the third. The 10 minute passage of play was our best footy for the day but we were outclassed by a very well drilled Banyule outfit.

Despite another massive margin and the underlying worry for an injured teammate, our boys are to be credited for their unwavering efforts, never dropping their heads and giving chase until the final siren. Stick at it fellas and the rewards will come. We would like to acknowledge the assistance and care provided to Reece Miller and his family by our trainers and the Banyule runner in his communication to the Banyule personnel on the boundary at the clubrooms. RESERVES: Following an eventful week with injuries, unavailability and last-minute withdrawals, we saw a return in young Pickles, had the club treasurer and also the assistant coach throw on the boots and managed to get four on the pine to start the game. To be only

ST MARY’S This week we’re glad to return to Reservoir for the first time since 2015. It’s good to have them back.

SENIORS: Our former captain Momo played his 100th senior game (the first to do so) and the team didn’t let him down for the occasion. Moppa for the second week in a row provided excellent defence and drive out of the backline and Mo himself turned the game on, showing everyone why he led our club for five years. At the end of the first term we began to kick away and by half time we had secured a 40-point lead which we were able to defend in the second half. Mr Reliable – Casta supported Mops down back and multiple goals from Toby, Deano, Dill, Lucc and Dobes helped us secure a comfortable win that moves us into third spot.

RESERVES: A disappointing start to the game saw Kilmore get a jump on us and lead by 17 points at the first change. Whilst their small forwards were impressive we kept them scoreless in the second quarter. In the second half we put on 9.11 to their 2.1.

Ashby continues to become one of our most impressive players. His work around the ground and in the ruck was fantastic. Winchy was dangerous all day and kicked three while Jonesy was showing the brilliant past form we saw throughout last year.

UNDER-19: Our under-19s took on an undefeated South Morang outfit at home. The Burra was extremely competitive and showed great effort the whole game however, inaccurate kicking and poor skill execution kept South in the game. After being tied up at threequarter time South ran away with the game getting the win by nine points. The under-19s are now 3 and 3 and sit in fourth spot. Conner and Mack were best on while Barks and Flick kicked two.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 SOUTH MORANG This week we host Epping.

SENIORS: Going into the first quarter against Mernda with a strong breeze, the guys capitalized to go into the break with a 33-point lead. With Mernda starting the second quarter strongly to bring our lead back to 16 points, captain Mitch Buckley stood up. We missed opportunities in the third quarter, kicking 3.6. With a BOG performance from Harry Whybrow controlling the tap outs, the whole team stood up in the last quarter and brought home a win RESERVES: Overall it was a very strong and impressive win by the boys, with Lachlan Buckley kicking six majors for the day. Our backline stood strong, led by Recco, which allowed McDonald and others to run off.

In the centre we started to get on top with Arnold and Nugyen. Gaz threw McEwan onto the wing and he showed his worth running both ways.

UNDER-19: Playing St Mary’s we were aware that they were a side we could not afford to take lightly and this was proven to be the case. We had a slow start and fortunately for us they were inaccurate in front of goal,

EPPING This week we take on South Morang.

THE CLUB: After almost three weeks without playing a game the seniors fell short against Heidelberg West last week. As disappointing as the loss was the boys are determined and ready to take on South Morang today.

Congratulations to the reserves on their win last week.

It was a slow start but they kicked away in the second half, coming away nine-goal victors.

SENIORS: Last week was last week. Our focus has shifted to today against South Morang and we require a much better effort.

RESERVES: Hosting Heidelberg West at home we knew it was going to be a hard contest. The first half was tough and at half time it couldn’t be separated.

We came out in the third and started to play our brand of footy. We opened up the gap at three quarter time and in the last quarter we dug deep coming away with a nine-goal win. A special mention to Hayden who struggled with the sun all day, even though there wasn’t any! The Macca boys looked for each other all day. FYI boys, there are 16 other team mates on the 48

which kept us in the game for the first half . Our second half of football was a massive improvement from the first half. We outscored St Mary’s in the third quarter kicking into the wind, with the scores level at threequarter time. It was a tight contest all the way to the end with St Mary’s never giving in. In the end we were able to hang on to a nine-point win.

MILESTONE: Wayne Pavitt’s extensive football career started at South Morang many years ago. He then went to Montmorency for five years. His career also took him Pascoe Vale, Myrtleford and he headed back to Montmorency for two years. With experience around other divisions he then returned home to South Morang, where it all started. Kicking almost 800 goals through his career, he might be small in size but his heart is a lot bigger than that. Loved and respected around the club, Wayne, also known as Pee Wee, this week runs out for his career 300th game.

An outstanding effort with hopefully a premiership to follow. On behalf of everyone at the South Morang Football Club and the football world, we would like to congratulate him on a successful career.

NORTHPARK NFLW - Review NORTHPARK NFLW REVIEW – ROUND 6

Approaching the halfway point of the Northpark NFLW season, Round 6 was a big weekend of action across both Division 1 and Division 2.

In Division 1, Bendigo remains the only undefeated side and won its sixth-straight game with a 14.8 (92) to 0.0 (0) result over Kew. Cold and wet conditions at Queen Elizabeth Oval didn’t deter the Thunder, who were well served by strong performances from Tiahna Cochrane and Grace Campbell. Ayrlea BaileyMcClanahan and Andrea Walsh did the damage on the scoreboard, each finishing with four goals.

Melbourne University bounced back from last week’s loss in the best possible fashion with a 3.6 (24) to 2.4 (16) win over the VU Western Spurs, who were undefeated heading into Round 6. The match was a tight contest throughout, with both teams struggling to hit the scoreboard in a low-scoring first half. Melbourne University took a one-point lead into the final change and a solitary goal in the last quarter was enough to seal the win and place them one game clear inside the top-four. Ruby Grounds and Prudence Cordes were Melbourne University’s best while Jessie Davies and Lauren Murphy were great for the Spurs.

Diamond Creek Women’s jumped up into second position on the ladder with a 4.11 (35) to 2.4 (16) win over Darebin. Despite a third quarter charge from the Falcons, which saw them within three points at the final break, the Creekers managed to kick away in an impressive fourth quarter. Beth Cruickshank and Jacqueline Barr were fantastic for the Creekers, while Emma Gianelli and Simone Nalder performed well for the Falcons.

Deer Park captured its first win of the season with a 9.8 (62) to 3.10 (28) victory over La Trobe University.

Unable to make the most of its time spent kicking with the wind, La Trobe kicked 0.5 in the first quarter and 1.4 in the third. However, Deer Park made the most of its opportunities and scored heavily when it came its turn with the breeze, kicking 4.5 in the second quarter and 4.3 in the final term. Chloe Portelli had a brilliant match, kicking seven goals and Maria Afuhaamango was also great for the Lions. Emily Turnbull and Denae Clow were La Trobe’s best.

Whitehorse secured back-to-back wins with a 6.12 (48) to 1.5 (11) victory over a travelling Pascoe Vale. After a close first half, the Colts dominated the third quarter,

holding the Panthers to a solitary scoring shot and kicking five unanswered goals. Lucy Watkin, Sarah Clough and Georgia Thomas were exceptional for the Colts.

In Division 2, Diamond Creek Women’s proved it is a genuine finals contender with a 4.1 (25) to 1.6 (12) win over previously undefeated Darebin. Trailing by four points at half time, Darebin produced a strong defensive effort to hold Diamond Creek to a scoreless third term but struggled to capitalise on its own momentum, only managing four behinds to level the score. The Creekers fought back with two final-quarter goals to get them the line. Tiahn Cowan (two goals) and Kayla Glazebrook were pivotal for the Creekers and Cori Rieger and Candice Dyson were best for the Falcons.

West Preston-Lakeside continued its charge, making it five wins on the trot with a 5.13 (43) to 0.0 (0) victory over La Trobe University. The Roosters controlled the match with 18 scoring chances, while also holding strong in their defensive 50 to keeping their opponents scoreless for the second-consecutive week. Jessica and Natarsha Bamblett excelled for the Roosters, while Sally Hunter and Jane Astbury did their best for La Trobe.

Laurimar defeated Whitehorse 3.2 (20) to 1.9 (15) for its second win of the year. After Whitehorse controlled the first quarter with five scoring opportunities to zero, Laurimar fought its way back into the match with a two-goal third quarter that saw it hit the front. It was a pivotal win for the Power, who are now only a one win off fifth spot. Emily Temple and Sam Fisher-Baker were critical in the Power’s win, while Amelia Frawley and Lucinda Smithson were the Colts best.

VU Western Spurs reclaimed top spot with a 5.13 (43) to 1.4 (10) victory over Montmorency. The Spurs dominated the first quarter with ten scoring shots to zero, but managed only one goal. They carried their good form into the next three quarters to run away 33-point winners. Kerrie Clarke produced her second consecutive best on ground performance, while Stacy Rigon was also great for the Spurs. Megan Allan and Jamie Lee Watson battled hard for the Magpies.

South Morang was on the winners’ list for a third week running with a 4.4 (28) to 1.3 (9) win over Kew. South Morang held sway for much of the match with the result catapulting them to fourth position, a win and percentage clear of fifth. After a close start to the game, the result came down to the final quarter where Greensborough was leading by just one goal going into the last term.

Lakeside took the lead early in the first quarter, but its advantage didn’t last long as Greensborough began to take some control back.

Passes were intercepted by both teams which created some back and forth play. This kept the scores tight in the opening term as both sides forced each other to make errors and throw pressure passes that missed targets and forced intercepts.

Greensborough grabbed intercepts and pushed forward into the scoring third where its shooters moved around the circle well, enabling the Boro to get ahead in the game.

It may have been behind at half time, with the score reading 18 to 22, but the third quarter was where Lakeside demonstrated its best play. The first three goals were shot by Lakeside shooters and this placed the team only one goal behind only a few minutes into the quarter.

Lakeside’s pressure increased and its tight defence held off Greensborough from scoring any goals, as Lakeside tied the scores at 22 – giving it hope of taking the lead for the first time in the game.

Lakeside’s defence snatched rebounds off Greensborough missed shots and swiftly moved the ball down to court for two goals to steal the lead.

In the final minute of the quarter, with scores tied at 29 all, Greensborough forced a held ball against Lakeside and capitalised on the advantage, scoring in the final seconds to finish one goal ahead heading into the last term.

The last quarter began with Greensborough’s centre pass, however its chance to get further ahead was stopped by Lakeside, who turned the ball over and tied the scores again at 30 all.

Greensborough’s defence strengthened throughout the fourth quarter, denying Lakeside any open looks at the ring. Greensborough started to get ahead slowly and Lakeside started to make more mistakes, struggling to make an impact in the final quarter.

As the quarter continued Greensborough continued to stretch its lead as it ran away with its third win of the year.

Watsonia opened the game at Parade College with a five-goal lead in the first quarter.

Accurate shooting and strong defensive work, which forced numerous turnovers, helped put Watsonia on top. Its tight pressure continued and there was no stopping the girls as they held a strong advantage over Bundoora for the rest of the game.

The second quarter saw Bundoora pick up its game to close the deficit slightly. With multiple calls made in its favour and strong attacking work throughout the scoring circle, Bundoora looked as though it would have a chance to get ahead in the game.

The pressure increased on Watsonia, who had to work harder for its goals as Bundoora’s confidence grew.

The beginning of the third quarter stayed tight, with only three goals separating the sides. Bundoora’s shooters Nellie Wilson and Ashlee Ozimek lessened the difference, capitalising on strong work from the midcourt.

Watsonia’s defensive work by both Rebecca Jennings and Jessica Schumann was strong as they picked up rebounds and pushed the ball to their attacking third. The girls gave their shooters Anna Kennedy and Georgia Cornell plenty of chances to increase their lead.

Going into the final quarter Watsonia led by seven goals, with the scoreboard reading 22-15.

The Bundoora girls don’t get off to a good start in the last, missing the shot off their centre pass and then losing possession yet again, giving Watsonia the opening two goals.

This set Watsonia off on a scoring streak as the team increased its lead consistently throughout the final quarter.

The Bundoora girls fought hard to closer the margin but despite their efforts they couldn’t close the buffer that Watsonia had created.

The result saw Watsonia retain third place on the ladder with a 4-2 record, while Bundoora slipped to 10th with a 2-5 record after seven rounds.

Final score: Watsonia 1 (31) def Bundoora 2 (22)
