EDITORIAL 2018 WATERMARC NFNL FINAL SERIES After a fantastic home and away season, this week Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 and A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 kick off their respective finals series.
The Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 finals are a wide-open race and every game promises to make for a very exciting finals series. Macleod heads into the finals after another consistent season and by finishing on top have earned the week off to refresh and prepare for the second semi final next Saturday. I have no doubt West Preston-Lakeside, North Heidelberg, Greensborough and Bundoora will be giving their all to win their way through their respective finals. Parking is always a concern at Preston City Oval. I encourage everyone to either catch the train or car pool to avoid parking issues. The NFNL has organised FREE parking at Melbourne Polytechnic (formerly NMIT) which is only 100 metres from the ground. This will apply for Saturdays only. In A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 Eltham has set the pace for the majority of the season and they certainly look the team to beat. Lower Plenty, Banyule and Thomastown will be working hard to ensure that they do not have it all their own way and this will provide for an interesting finals series. Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 is set for preliminary finals this weekend between Panton Hill and South Morang at the Whittlesea Showgrounds. After two excellent semi finals last weekend, this promises to be
a cracking game with the winner proceeding through to the grand final to meet an in-form St Mary’s. Special mention and congratulations to Laurimar for making their first ever senior finals series. They almost pulled off a great win last Sunday, but South Morang held on for a five-point victory. Congratulations to St Mary’s for winning their way through to their first ever NFNL senior grand final. Congratulations also to Bendigo, West PrestonLakeside and the Bundoora for their victories in the ANZ NFNL Women’s grand finals last weekend. An excellent crowd attended each grand final to cap off another very successful NFNL Women’s season. The NFNL netball grand finals commenced last Friday and congratulations to Hurstbridge 2, Watsonia 5 and Mernda 2 for their victories in the Section 9, 10 and 11 grand finals. This week the Section 5 to 8 premiership deciders will be played and good luck to all sides competing. The matches include: Section 5 – Macleod 1 v Craigieburn 2, Section 6 - Laurimar 2 v Hurstbridge 1, Section 7 – Whittlesea 1 v Montmorency 1 and Section 8 – Thomastown 3 v Greensborough 4. Good luck to all teams playing over the weekend. May the best team win and let’s make sure that everyone represents their club and the NFNL in a positive manner. See you at the football and netball. NFNL News THUNDER GO BACK-TO-BACK, ROOSTERS AND BULLS WIN FIRST FLAGS
by Jacinta Frazzetto
The ANZ NFNL Women’s season came to its conclusion with Bendigo claiming the Division 1 premiership, while West Preston-Lakeside and Bundoora won their maiden women’s flags.
After falling to Keilor by two points in the second semi final, Bendigo came full circle to upset the Blues 7.7 (49) to 1.4 (10) at Preston City Oval to defend its 2017 title. The Thunder got off to the ideal start with captain Andrea Walsh converting the opening goal of the match and leading her side to a nine-point quarter time advantage. Tiahna Cochrane’s goal stretched Bendigo’s lead out to 14 points during the second term, but the Blues responded via Tenille Cann’s expertly taken set shot. However, Yasmin Colley’s opportunistic crumbing goal midway through the term stretched Bendigo’s lead back out to 15 points by the main break. Controlling much of the play during the third term, Bendigo was rewarded for its effort with goals from Kodi Jacques and Billie-Lee Humphrey to assume what looked an unassailable 25-point buffer at the final change. Last quarter goals to Walsh and Bianca Jones put the finishing touches on what was a mighty team performance by Bendigo. Isabella Ayre was named best afield by the umpires for her outstanding all-round display and Olivia McEvoy topped off her season with yet another impressive performance around the contest. West Preston-Lakeside avenged last year’s grand final defeat and was crowned the Division 2 premier following a compelling 6.2 (38) to 4.5 (29) victory over Montmorency. A great pack mark and finish from Catherine O’Bryan gave the Roosters the opening goal but the Magpies levelled the scores at the midway point of the first term via a Sian Capito snap. The Roosters however produced a seven-point lead before quarter time thanks to Dialla Fayad’s conversion. Capito’s second major in the second term levelled the scores once more, before Paityn Hirt’s goal snatched the lead back for the Roosters. A late goal came for the Magpies via Natalie Tull-Boyle which tied the scores up at half time. Tull-Boyle’s second goal midway through the third 4
term gave the Magpies a seven-point lead. But with an upset brewing, a crucial running goal from Qwai Sibbald on the three quarter time siren brought the Roosters back within a single point. With the final quarter played at a high intensity, it took a fantastic one-handed grab from Klarindah Hudson and follow up delivery to O’Bryan, who goaled, to hand the Roosters a four-point lead. Hudson then kicked a goal of her own to stretch the Roosters lead out to a match-winning 10-points. O’Bryan was rewarded for her superb performance, proclaimed best on field by the umpires. In Division 3, Bundoora completed its undefeated season by taking home the premiership cup after a 6.9 (45) to 2.0 (12) victory over Eltham. An early Jessica Mason goal gave the Panthers the perfect start, but the Bulls responded with Bridgette Taylor-Gray and Amy Callaway goals to grab a sevenpoint quarter time buffer. A hotly contested second term saw the Bulls add only three points to their tally but took a handy 10-point buffer into the change rooms. Rebekah Blennerhassett converted a set shot opportunity and Brieanna Musgrave kicked a running goal to produce a 25-point lead for the Bulls at the final change. The Panthers secured the all-important first goal within the opening two minutes via Krystal Cullinan to keep their slim chance of a comeback alive, but the Bulls responded almost instantly. Brittany Del Romano’s goal was followed by Blennerhassett’s second and ended the Bulls’ already fantastic day on an even higher note. Despite her side’s defeat, Eltham star Krystal Cullinan rounded out her exceptional season by being adjudged best on ground by the umpires.

NFNL News BULLDOGS SEARCHING FOR MORE HISTORY
by Nicholas Sacco
North Heidelberg coach Jimmy House believes the momentum and excitement his side has generated will be a positive during the Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 finals series. The Bulldogs produced a history-making home and away season, finishing in third place on the ladder to become the first reigning Division 2 premiership to play Division 1 finals. House said he was proud of the Bulldogs’ achievements so far but was hopeful of creating more history in the finals. “The first message that I want to get across is that this is no reflection on me as a coach, it’s been the effort of the side that has gotten us this far,” House told The Northerner. “The footy club is loving the position it’s in. It’s really embracing what we have achieved. “It’s a long time between drinks (reaching Division 1 finals) but we are looking forward to it – we can’t wait.” After a slow start, North Heidelberg has had an incredible run in the lead up to finals, winning nine of the last ten matches to head into September full of confidence. House believes the adjustments made in pre-season training were vital to helping North Heidelberg flourish in the top flight. “There’s probably a number of factors for building our culture but I put it down to the message over the summer. We wanted to take the boys and the club out of their comfort zone,” he said. “I think anyone that wants to challenge themselves and drive their standards higher needs to remove themselves from their comfort zone. “We weren’t reinventing the wheel, we were just slightly tweaking some things. “Don’t be comfortable with what the expected will be, let’s be better. That was the message and that is what has helped us over the last few months.” North Heidelberg takes on West Preston-Lakeside in the qualifying final at Preston City Oval on Saturday. The Roosters had the better of the Bulldogs in Round 3 with a 42-point victory, but the tables were turned in Round 11 with the Bulldogs recording a nine-point win at J.E. Moore Park.
With both sides boasting star-studded forward lines, House believes it will be a match decided inside the 50m arcs. “They score pretty heavily so our back six are going to have to be on pretty early,” he said. “I don’t think a side against them has kicked 100 points this year so their defence stacks up as well, which means it’s going to be about getting the balance right between the offence and the defence. “I think the weather is supposed to be pretty ordinary on Saturday, but we’ll just make sure that we get our match ups right and make sure that we are ready for the contest. North Heidelberg lost its first game since Round 8 in the final round when it went down to Bundoora by seven points at Yulong Reserve. With a top-three spot already sewn up, the Bulldogs were able to manage some players to maintain a healthy side coming into the finals. “If you look at our side coming into the weekend, Brent [Harvey] didn’t play and Kyle McDonald didn’t play, who are two of my top five midfielders,” he said. “We made a tough call on the weekend to rest those players and put in a side that gave us the best opportunity to play a finals-like game when we played Bundoora. “I took many of my midfield and a few others off in the last quarter and we made one interchange rotation for the whole last quarter so that allows us to go into this weekend being as fresh as can be.” North Heidelberg has been wonderfully served by its star players this year, such as the Harvey brothers, Liam Hunt, Jesse Tardio, Michael Florance and Leigh Gilbert. However, House lauded the efforts his more inexperienced players have provided throughout the season and feels they will play a key role in North Heidelberg’s quest for success. “The five or six kids that played in last year’s side like [Liam] Nunan, [Mitchell] Dillon, Jackson Jones, Kyle Green, Liam McLeod, Nick Matthews – the younger brigade, they have been sensational this year. They’ve allowed the club to have depth,” he said. “Looking at our reserves side on the weekend, we have one player that’s 24 and the rest are 22 and 23-year-olds that are knocking on the door. “The future has never been brighter at North Heidelberg.” WWW. NFNL News PANTHERS READY TO GO
by James Strebinos
Eltham coach Paul King says his side is ready to
produce its best football ahead of the A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 second semi final against Lower Plenty. The Panthers finished the home and away season in first place on the ladder, with a 16-2 record. That included a 15-game winning streak to start the campaign. Despite a form slump which resulted in losses in Round 16 and 17, Eltham was a convincing winner in the final home and away game against Epping and is now full of confidence heading into the finals. “We had a couple of rough weeks where we didn’t play particularly well but I thought we played well on the weekend and I think the boys are ready for the finals,” King told The Northerner. “We are fairly fit and ready to go so I’m sure the boys are taking some confidence. “You don’t win 16 games throughout the year and not be ready for the finals, so we will be ready to go come Saturday.” Eltham is set to regain co-captain Bradyn Taglieri from injury, while Michael Still is also in the frame to return. Taglieri was in great form early in the year but hasn’t played since Round 10, while Still has booted 29 goals in just seven appearances. “We will get captain Brayden Taglieri back and Michael Still is a chance, so we will see how he progresses before we make a decision,” King confirmed. Eltham has won both matches against Lower Plenty this year, although the most recent clash in Round 12 was decided by just eight points. King said Lower Plenty could not be taken lightly. “I think their top end, as in their ruckman and onballers and also guys like Darcy Barden who plays up forward, are very strong,” he said. “They have a pretty good mix and we will have to watch out for Tom Keys and Patty Flynn, who we will have to try and match up on well. “They have a good mix of small forwards who know how to kick goals. “We just need to make sure we play our style of
footy and move the ball quickly, hit our targets and hopefully the bigger ground will suit us.” Preparations have been ramped up this week by adding an extra skills session to make sure players are switched on from the first bounce. “We have an extra session on Wednesday to sharpen on some skills and some set plays and all that sort of stuff,” King said. “We already started with a recovery on Sunday and we will also be training as usual on Tuesday and Thursday.” Having won the minor premiership, King said he is not surprised his side is the hunted heading into this year’s finals series. “It was noticeable in the second half of the year that sides were really trying to hunt us down,” he said. “Obviously finishing on top of the ladder means everyone’s coming for us. “The premiership is wide open and we know every other side has different strengths but we will back ourselves.” King said he was pleased with the output of a number of the club’s recruits, but also believed many younger guys who have stepped up at the right time of the year. “Obviously Brent Macaffer has been very impressive all year, but Bronson Glasgow has turned it on the last couple of weeks, having just come out of under-19s,” he said. “Getting Tim Currie back from overseas has helped us structurally and young Ben Montenaro has also been excellent lately.” WWW. NFNL News BURRA INTO GRAND FINAL
by Doug Long
St Mary’s took the short route into the Heidelberg
Golf Club Division 3 grand final with a hard-fought 23-point win over Panton Hill in the second semi final The 8.14 (62) to 5.9 (39) win at the Whittlesea Showgrounds – the club’s first senior finals victory in its short history – gives the Burra a week’s rest ahead of the premiership decider. Five unanswered goals either side of quarter time set up the win. At that stage, St Mary’s had established a 21-point lead. The lead never varied much thereafter – with the margin being 25 points at half time and then 23 points at the last break. The low scores in perfect conditions indicated the tough and contested nature of the clash. The Redbacks missed several shots at goal in the first term, then never looked likely to threaten – except for just after half time. Panton Hill coach Steve Layt moved defender Mitch Anderson to centre half forward at the main break. Anderson kicked the first goal of the second half after a ruck infringement, then Daniel Freeman stuck a great tackle and goaled from the resultant free kick. The margin was cut to 14 points and an upset looked a possibility, but Nick Dean replied with two majors in quick succession to re-establish a handy break for the top team. Dean’s second goal came courtesy of a good centring kick from Myles Guldon – who was playing in his 100th game for the club. The Redbacks responded soon after with a goal to Jonty Rushton from a set shot on the 50 metre line. But then the scoring dried up for both sides and there was no easy ball to be won. Both teams went goalless for the final ten minutes of the third stanza, then kicked one each for the final term – which became a battle of attrition. “Our unrelenting pressure for four quarters was outstanding,” St Mary’s coach Fabian Carelli said. Carelli has worked hard to establish a contested football brand which will stand up in finals football – and it passed its first test very well. He described his back six as sensational. Led by Leigh Sullivan, who quelled the influence of Rhys Boyden, 8
they were impassable for most of the day. Sullivan was ably assisted by Lee Minuz, with Joseph Bergman and Daniel Castagnini mopping up and sending the team forward. Combined with an excellent midfield working hard both ways, the Burra snuffed out any chance Panton Hill had to kick a winning score. Lachlan Potter, playing midfield and forward, was outstanding and often the link in the chain. Chris Petroro hit targets regularly, while Dillan Ronalds exerted an influence on the game. Given the pressure of expectation on the club, Carelli would have been thrilled with the overall output of the team and their consistent application of the game plan – even if the finishing touches lacked at times. Winners were harder to find for the Redbacks, but Mitch Anderson stood out at both ends of the ground. The defence stood up extremely well – with Brent Ryan taking some intercept marks. Samuel Parks and Scott Conte got plenty of the ball through the middle of the ground. “Wasted opportunities cost us and we lost contested footy,” Panton Hill coach Steve Layt said after the game. The Redbacks will be back at the Whittlesea Showgrounds next Saturday to tackle the winner of the first semi final between South Morang and Laurimar. FINAL: St Mary’s 8.14 (62) def Panton Hill 5.9 (39)

NFNL News LIONS WIN EPIC SEMI
by Doug Long
A goal to Bailey Brown in the final minute helped
South Morang claim a five-point over Laurimar in one of the best finals ever played in Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3. Brown calmly slotted the winning goal from 30m out directly in front to restore the lead for the Lions, who held on for a 13.11 (89) to 12.12 (84) win in the first semi final at the Whittlesea Showgrounds. Brown kicked the winning goal after a 50m penalty for encroaching over the mark brought him within range. He played in the midfield and excelled all day. His role down back was filled by Liam Failla, who had not played since Round 9. Seventeen-year-old Sam Indian, fresh from a junior final the week prior, kicked six goals for the winners – with his marking being a feature. He also kicked two set shot goals from severe angles. The lead changed at each quarter break. Despite the breeze to the northern end of the ground being only slight, 18 goals were kicked to that end compared to a mere seven at the Yea Road end. “We live to fight another day,” South Morang coach Gary Hall said after his side booked a preliminary final date with Panton Hill. Tye Hall did well through the midfield and took an absolute hanger in the third term. Cory Giannone got plenty of the ball and his disposal plus decision making under pressure was a highlight. James Mellerick was the best of the defenders and his kicking skills help set up many attacks for the Lions. James Hewson was busy through the midfield and kicked a clutch goal late in the second term from on the boundary. The Laurimar players showed no signs of nerves to begin their first final. Their tackling and pressure applied was outstanding early and helped them hold their opponents goalless in the first term – while kicking two themselves. Josh Williamson was an ever-present danger up forward for the Power and booted four goals. Had his radar been on, he could have had a few more. Jackson Lewis was solid down back, while Mitchell Thompson was tough and tenacious as always –
winning frees with strong tackles and he finished up with two majors. Luke Wilson did well in the midfield and was a spark behind the third term Power surge – in which they booted four unanswered goals to take the lead at the last change. Laurimar’s play of the day went to 17-year-old Jake Richards. Working in tight confines near the forward 50 on the boundary, he beat two opponents, executed a give and get handball, got himself into clear space and had the composure to hit Jacson Cecil wide open 20m out. Cecil’s resultant goal put Laurimar within a kick late in the contest. They hit the front minutes later. The Lions turned the ball over from a kick-out and a Joe the goose handball saw Dallas King run in for the easiest of goals. Alas, for Power fans, South Morang was to have the last say and move to the preliminary final. “Really proud of the group,” Laurimar coach Justin Sherman said. “There is definitely a lot of upside.” The Redbacks await South Morang in the preliminary final at the Whittlesea Showgrounds on Saturday – with the winner gaining the right to challenge St Mary’s for the 2018 premiership. NFNL News BRIDGES RETAIN SPOT IN TOP FLIGHT
by Jarrad Gardner
Hurstbridge have survived relegation from Meadows
Greyhounds Division 1 season with a hard-fought 26-point victory over Whittlesea in the final round of the season.
The Bridges led at every change on their way to the 19.10 (124) to 15.8 (98) victory at Ben Frilay Oval, securing their spot in the top flight for a thirdconsecutive year. The result handed Whittlesea a bottom-place finish and relegation back to second division after a threeyear stint in first division. Troy Barbero finished off his season in fine form with a best on ground display, while fellow mainstays Sean Jellie and Brayden Shaw also impressed in the victory. Former Collingwood and Western Bulldogs forward Travis Cloke put in a strong performance, booting four goals for the home side and was dominant in patches against an undermanned Whittlesea defence. Nick Milne also booted three for the home side while Jack Donnelly, Jamie Smith, Mitchell Burton and Mitchell Hymus all kicked two apiece. For the Eagles, Janan Daniel kicked three majors and was aided by Xavier Dimasi, Max Dyson, Matthew Atta, Jaron Murphy and Clancy Bland who all booted two goals. Atta was named best afield for his side, while Nathan and Mitchell Andrews both impressed in defence alongside youngster Blake Watson, who took multiple goal-saving marks in the final term. Whittlesea was able to get the first goal of the match in the opening minutes through Atta, before Hymus kicked two in the space of three minutes to kick-start the home side. However, the Bridges were unable to convert going forward early on, with five more scoring shots at the first change they led by just five points. After allowing Max Dyson to kick truly early in the second term, the home side then flicked the switch and piled on the next five goals, including two to both Cloke and Milne. Whittlesea lost Luke Deards midway through the term. The key defender had the job on Cloke and his side was then unable to find a matchup who compared 10
physically, allowing Cloke to have his way inside the Bridges forward 50. The home side booted seven goals to three in the second term to open a 28-point lead at the main break. Goals to Donnelly and Jellie early in the third term saw the Bridges threaten to run away with a huge win, however the Eagles were not going down without a fight and booted four of the next five goals to trim the margin to 19 points at the final change. Bland converted from the pocket in the opening minute of the final term as the Eagles gained momentum and threatened to escape relegation once again However, the sides traded goals to opening the fourth quarter as the Bridges held on to their lead. Cloke then kicked another two goals, before the Eagles responded with two of their own in two minutes through Atta and Dimasi, to keep stay within touching distance. The sides once again trade goals before Donnelly and Burton broke through to put the result beyond doubt for the Bridges. Hurstbridge will once again look to consolidate themselves as a Division 1 side in 2019, after avoiding narrowly avoiding relegation for the past two seasons. FINAL: Hurstbridge 19.10 (124) def Whittlesea 15.8 (98)

NFNL News BEARS CELEBRATE DESPITE LOSS
by Ben Pascuzzi
Thomastown will play finals for the first time since
2014, despite a final round loss to Diamond Creek in A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2. Diamond Creek prevailed 14.14 (98) to 13.18 (86) at Main Street Recreational Reserve, but didn’t secure enough of a percentage boost to leafrog the Bears into fourth place. Last year’s runner-up needed to win by at least 12 points to secure a finals berth and led by as much as 50 points during the third term, before failing to hold out their fast-finishing host in one of the most dramatic finishes to a season imaginable. Alas for Thomastown, it ends a three-year streak of close finals misses, having finished in fifth place on the ladder for three consecutive seasons. Despite winning the match, Diamond Creek players slumped to the ground on the final siren, whilst the Thomastown faithful invaded the pitch in jubilation – in scenes akin to a grand final win. Early on it seemed it would be a mere formality that the team progressing to the finals would be Diamond Creek. After conceding two of the first three goals of the match, the visitors piled on the last five majors of the quarter to race out to a 25-point lead. The run was finished by a spectacular mark from Ryan Pingree late in the term, who flew so high that he was unable to take his set shot after landing heavily. He left the kick to Nicholas Barro to boot home his second for the day. The Creekers’ momentum continued in the second term as Jedd McQueen, Jai Norman and Barro each booted majors to extend the lead to 43 points. Thomastown had not kicked a goal since the sixminute mark of the first term, before Jacob Osei-Duro broke the drought midway through the second term. But it was not enough to halt Diamond Creek’s momentum as Marcus Lentini kicked an instant reply to extend his side’s lead to 44 points. A late reply from Osei-Duro at the end of the second quarter was not enough to derail Diamond Creek’s charge, as the visitor booted the opening two goals of the third term to open a game-high lead of 50 points. But this was where Thomastown finally kicked into
gear, ending the third quarter on a four-goal streak, including two to Anthony Calafiore, to reduce the margin to just 23 points at three-quarter time. With a loud Thomastown faithful behind the home side, it was the visitors who were able to quell the momentum momentarily, as Ryan Pingree and Daniel Shallard kicked two of the first three goals of the quarter to maintain a 25-point advantage after 10 minutes. Anthony Capeci, who was able to split the two Creekers’ goals early in the fourth quarter, was able to kick his third major minutes after Shallard’s major, and it was followed by another to Calafiore as the margin was cut to 14-points. With the crowd at fever pitch, Matthew Ferraro sailed home the goal which put Thomastown back into the top-four, nailing his set shot from the 50m arc with only minutes to spare. Capeci then booted another to cut the deficit to two points and ensure the Bears held onto fourth place and booked a place in the first semi final where it will take on Banyule at Epping Recreation Reserve. THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football Netball League Record
PREVIEW - WP-Lakeside v North Heidelberg West Preston-Lakeside and North Heidelberg lock
horns at Preston City Oval this Saturday in a qualifying final few would have forecast at the start of the year. Despite the loss of Andrew Walker, Shaun Gannon and Mathew Stokes following last year’s elimination final exit – West Preston-Lakeside has been able to respond emphatically to secure its first top-three finish since winning the 2010 premiership. North Heidelberg has created history to become the first reigning Division 2 premier to make the finals in the top flight. Having secured the double-chance the Bulldogs now have their eyes set on claiming what would be one of the more famous flags in league history. Both sides enter the finals series in outstanding form and will be looking to carry the momentum built in the back half of the home and away season. After sitting in sixth place after Round 12, West PrestonLakeside has won its past six games by an average of 48 points. Among the Roosters scalps in the final third of the season are minor premier Macleod at De Winton Park and fifth-placed Greensborough. A host of new faces have helped lift the Roosters up the table this year – many of which have had experience at VFL and Development League level. Sam Glover has been arguably the pick of the bunch since joining from the Northern Blues. Michael Ercolano has featured among the best players in seven of 16 matches after spending much of 2017 with Coburg, while Ozgur Uysal and Mark Kovacevic loom as gameshapers in September. West Preston-Lakeside has been defensively sound this
by Samuel Zito
season. They are yet to concede 100 points in a game and have coughed up an average of just 63 points a game. Ahmed Saad again looms as one of the key players in his year’s finals. The 2017 leading goal kicker has booted 52 goals this year – finishing third on the goal kicking table despite missing seven games. He was the match winner when West Preston-Lakeside downed the Bulldogs in Round 4 – booting nine goals as his side rallied from a six-goal deficit to win by 42 points. North Heidelberg has claims to be the form side of the competition in the back half of the year, winning nine games on the trot before falling seven points short of Bundoora in Round 18 – just the club’s second defeat since Round 5. The Bulldogs have no shortage of match winners– particularly through the midfield, where Brent Harvey, Liam Hunt and Jesse Tardio are thriving on the dominant season that ruckman Michael Florance has put together. The Bulldogs forward line has again been spearheaded by Shane Harvey – who kicked his 900th club goal earlier this season. Harvey has kicked a competitionhigh 63 majors this year, including seven of 11 in the Round 11 win over the Roosters at J.E. Moore Park. Jhye Baddeley-Kelly has produced a sensational first season in the top flight after crossing from Lalor – culminating in a Vic Metro call up in the 2018 AFL Victoria Community Cup. The winner of this clash takes on Macleod in the second semi final – a match both would take confidence into, being the only two clubs to defeat the Roos in 2018.

Another first for the club. Well done to all involved. MEN’S FOOTBALL: What a beautiful day greeted us last Saturday with perfect conditions for football. The seniors finished off the year with another win, pushing us up to second on the ladder and a spot in the qualifying final against North Heidelberg. The twos looked in trouble early but managed to get over the line and now have the week of. The under-19s had a hard year but battled away until the end. Well done to all those lads that saw it through. After every final the rooms will be open for a post-match ale or two. SENIOR PRESENTATION NIGHT: Is on Thursday September 27 at The Sovereign. Bookings essential so see Fiona or Dooga to confirm and pay for your spot. AROUND THE CLUB: Gino has stepped up to his
NORTH HEIDELBERG September and finals are what it’s all about. It’s a
great achievement to get this far in our first year back in the top division. THE CLUB: We are not content with just making the finals and today is the day to produce the brand of football we know stacks up. Trust the process and dare to dream. SENIORS: Whilst the final home and away game against Bundoora had nothing riding on it with all finals positions in place prior to finals, there was plenty we can take from the game. Our first quarter was the benchmark we must set today, with finals-like pressure and intensity. West Preston-Lakeside are seasoned finalists with quality on every line so we must be prepared for what they throw at us. To Jimmy and the boys, the club is 100 percent dedicated to the cause in what is an opportunity of a lifetime for our club to make its mark. DEVELOPMENT: Great win to finish the year off that offers plenty of encouragement for next season. With several under-19s players instrumental in the victory the future for our majority young twos list augurs well in the future. Summing up the year probably 14

Please find out who they are make yourself known to them and support them Thanks. will go down as a missed opportunity to make our presence higher up the ladder as we were in many games against good opposition but could not finish off. PREVIEW - Bundoora v Greensborough For the third year in succession Bundoora and Greens-
borough meet in a knockout final at Preston City Oval.
The past two instalments have seen the sides meet in the first semi final – where the ledger is all square at a win apiece. This year the rivals meet a week earlier, in the elimination final, after enduring contrasting seasons to get to this weekend’s fixture. Bundoora’s premiership defence appeared in tatters early in the season as it struggled to combat a host of significant injuries to key players. The Bulls lost five of their opening seven matches and sat in ninth place on the ladder at Round 7. Staring down the barrel of missing the finals for the first time since 2000, the Bulls have worked wonders to get their campaign back on track and now head into the finals in brilliant form – having won nine of their past 11 matches. Importantly, Bundoora heads into September having beaten Greensborough, North Heidelberg and West Preston-Lakeside in their most recent outings – something which should inspire confidence in Ricky Dyson’s side. With only three players managing to play all 18 home and away matches, the Bulls have not been able to rely as heavily on their top-end talent to guide them through to another finals campaign. Dale Marshall has continued his development after featuring in last year’s premiership team, while Daniel Guccione and Fitzroy Stars recruits Kain Proctor and Peter Hood have produced solid campaigns. Bundoora is getting key players back at the right time of the year. Andrew Sturgess and Josh Iacobaccio will be available for finals after Coburg’s VFL campaign BUNDOORA

came to an end, while Eamon Gilbert and Jack Furlong have joined the senior side in the past fortnight. Greensborough has limped into the finals after looking the goods to secure a double-chance for much of the home and away season. The Boro sat in second place as recently as Round 15 but lost their final three games to slip to fifth spot. Injuries have hit hard in recent weeks, with in-form cocaptain Chris Clark, recruit Zak McCubbin and defender Adrian Cataldo all picking up season-ending injuries late in the year. However, in a welcome boost, Lachlan McQuilken, Jason Rogers, Andrew Stellas and Brody Tickell should all be available this week after sitting out the final round loss at West Preston-Lakeside. Scoring has dried up for the Boro over the past month – where they have averaged just 70 points a game. We know the Boro’s defence is as good as any – the query will be whether they can kick winning scores week after week during the finals series. One player the Boro would love to have on the larger expanses of Preston City Oval is Box Hill-listed forward Billy Murphy. The speedster booted 18 goals in 5 appearances this year and became an instant fan favourite. His unlikely to be unavailable this week, having played the past three matches with the finals-bound VFL Hawks. While the Boro have lost their past three games, it is worth noting they led Bundoora for the opening three quarters just two weeks ago and held the lead entering time on against North Heidelberg the week prior.

Dom Nixon kicked truly for goal and from that point we seemed to get our game plan in to gear and slowly began to swing momentum our way. With some great play by Todd Hughes and Jack Furlong, we hit the front and it then became a game with the lead changing numerous times. It was lucky for us this time we were in front when the final siren sounded in a heartstopping game. Best Players: Jack Furlong, Todd Hughes, Andrew Sturgess. RESERVES: It was a tough and fast flowing game from the start, the kind of play that you expect from an opponent like North Heidelberg. James Lord once again was in the middle of the action. Jack Carlyon also played a very good game, as did Kaine Digby. Shane Jacobs did his best in the final quarter to stop the North Heidelberg run on, however it was to no avail in the final five minutes North Heidelberg was able to hit the front and hold the lead. Best Players: Kaine Digney, James Lord, Jack Carylon.
GREENSBOROUGH All three sides are in action in week one of the 2018 NFNL Division 1 Finals Series.
SENIORS: The seniors lost by 44 points last week at the hands of West Preston-Lakeside. The Roosters edged further away from us at each break, with Mitch Merkel’s three goals the highlight for us. Tristan Stead and Tynan Smith finished off the home and away season in style, as did Jamie Craker who was influential for us in the ruck. Congratulations to Jordy Smith who made his senior debut and held his own. We’ve qualified for the finals for the fifth year running and have set up a mouth-watering elimination final with old rival, and last year’s Premier Bundoora. With several key senior players set to return in time for the clash, we’re confident the boys will do us proud! RESERVES: The reserves fell to the top-placed West Preston-Lakeside in a gallant effort last weekend. The boys fought hard and led at every change, before losing their lead early in the last term before falling by 17 points. Liam Emery was fantastic on the ball all day, while Matt Bosco and Brad Fox fought hard. 18
UNDER-19: We came out full of confidence in the first quarter and led at quarter time. In the second quarter we dropped our heads and allowed St Mary’s to score some easy goals. In the third quarter, after some words of wisdom from the coach, we came out and kicked three goals in a row and had our momentum back, but St Mary’s came back again and it was a close game until the very end. Luckily, we were in front at the final siren. Best Players: Jacob Maines, Jamaica Isley, Tristan Brown. WOMEN’S: It’s a wonderful thing when a group of people you have never met before come together and create a team and achieve what you thought would be impossible in our first year. I wish everyone could have felt the excitement that we felt winning the NFNL Women’s Division 3 premiership last Sunday at Preston City Oval. Best Players: Candice Dyson, Jemma Cremore, Jemayne Albrecht-Jonkers AGM: The AGM for the Bundoora FNC is to be held on Wednesday October 31 at 7.00pm. All welcome. We are seeking new committee members and all existing committee positions are up for re-election.
Gav Worrall was strong in the ruck, and Marcus Allen featured in the best players, following a solid performance in the back half. The boys finished second, and tackle Whittlesea in a qualifying final this weekend. UNDER-19: Our future stars secured their spot in the finals with a 141-point victory over West PrestonLakeside last weekend. Kyle Horkings booted six goals and featured in the best players, while talls Nick Beames and Rayden Garrard kicked three apiece and were also in the best, as Ben Hales was awarded best on ground honours. The boys finished fourth, and like the seniors, will take on Bundoora in an elimination final on Sunday. Go well, lads! AROUND THE CLUB: Presentation Night is Friday October 5 at the Ivanhoe Town Hall, more details are to follow, but keep the date free. We’d love to see as many Boro people there as possible, to celebrate the 2018 seasons of our footballers, both men and women, and the netballers!

PREVIEW - Eltham v Lower Plenty A place into the A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2
grand final is up for grabs when Eltham takes on Lower Plenty in the second semi final at Epping Recreation Reserve on Saturday. It is a match-up that was expected to come to fruition since very early on in the season, and despite both sides suffering minor slip-ups in recent weeks, both have proven themselves to be premiership contenders from the outset of 2018. Eltham has been the most dominant side throughout the 2018 campaign, opening the season with an incredible 15-game winning streak, before closing out the year with losses in two of its final three games. Having been demoted by percentage from Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 last season, the Panthers certainly have been determined to get themselves straight back into the top flight and are in prime position to claim their first piece of silverware since winning the Division 2 flag in 2002. Star recruit and former Collingwood premiership player Brent Macaffer has proven his worth this season. The star midfielder has dominated the competition with his ability to win the hard ball, as well as provide first-class delivery into his side’s forward line. Tom Rogers, Ben Montanaro, Tim Currie and Anton Woods have all been key contributors to the Panthers’ season as well, whilst the consistency from Lewis Glasgow has been outstanding, with his hard-nosed attitude aiding his side’s success. Lower Plenty also enters the game in slightly patch form, having lost two of its past three regular season
by Ben Pascuzzi
games against fellow finalists Banyule and Thomastown – either of which they would meet in a preliminary final should they lose the second semi. Head-to-head form isn’t on Lower Plenty’s side entering this week’s match. The Bears have failed to defeat the Panthers in their previous two encounters this season, losing by 36 points in Round 8 and eight points in Round 12. Despite this, a lot can be taken out of the nail-biting loss back in Round 12, which inspired Ben Turner’s side to win its next three games in a row and play a brand of football that certainly showed it is capable of achieving premiership glory this year. Tom Keys has been Lower Plenty’s standout performer throughout the season. Keys has been used in a range of roles yet leads the team’s goal kicking with 36 for the season, as well as being named in his side’s best more than any other player. It can be argued that skipper Patrick Flynn is Lower’s barometer. When he succumbed to a knee injury earlier in the season, Lower went on to lose its first two games whilst he was on the sidelines. When Flynn has been playing and been a prominent force in the ruck, Lower has more than often won the match. A dominant showing by the big man this week could go a long way towards his side securing the first place in the grand final. A host of youngsters have again proven their worth for Lower Plenty, with Ben Paterson and Jordan Sacco once again producing fantastic home and away campaigns.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 - SECOND SEMI FINAL ELTHAM Our 2018 finals campaign continues this week. THIS WEEK: Finals starts with both seniors and reserves coming up against Lower Plenty at Epping Recreation Reserve. Has been a great rivalry in the past and should be great games again. Both seniors and reserves deserve the chance for direct entrance in the Grand Final as both sides finished on top. The under-19s also earnt a double chance and today play Montmorency at Preston City Oval. LAST WEEK: Two solid wins by the senior sides against Epping sets both sides up well for a finals tilt. The under-19s continue their late season streak to rack up a win over Whittlesea to also show form coming into finals. The Eltham senior women’s side showed the grit and determination they have given all year only to fall short in their Grand Final against Bundoora. A tremendous effort by all people involved in their inaugural season that will lay them a great launching pad for years to come. FUNCTIONS: Presentation night will be held Saturday September 22 at the Heidelberg Golf Club.
LOWER PLENTY This weekend is a huge weekend for the Bears as we begin our finals campaign.
SENIORS: The seniors had a disappointing day last week against Banyule. Keysy was the pick for us and was well rewarded winning the Vietnam Vets medal for the most courageous. Lofty was again the dominant forward with five, with multiples to Darcy, Wilko and Patto. Loz did a nice job for us again on one of their man men, while Al Alderton again impressed across the wings. Flynny battled hard as he always does but it wasn’t our day. Down by three goals. RESERVES: The reserves finished second on the ladder with a massive win against Banyule last week. Grovesy got a handful in his 200th while Spud got five of his own. Jacko was unstoppable across half back, while Lucas was again the pick of the mids with four goals. Fordy had another solid day while Hinchy continued with his good form. 100-point winners in the end! 28

THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football Netball League Record
PREVIEW - Banyule v Thomastown A mouth-watering first semi final in A Plus Labour
Solutions Division 2 pits two of the most exciting teams in the competition against each other, Banyule and Thomastown go to battle at Epping Recreation Reserve. Although Banyule had already secured its finals place before Round 18, Thomastown’s place was not guaranteed. Ben Chapman’s side produced an incredible comeback against Diamond Creek, to cut its deficit enough to book its first second division finals berth since 2018. Banyule makes history as the first reigning Division 3 premier to play Division 2 finals the next season. They head into the finals with a wave of momentum, ending their season with four consecutive wins, having lost just once since Round 10. That winning streak included a 28-point upset of Eltham in Round 16, becoming the first side to beat the Panthers all season. They then downed Lower Plenty in Round 18 – with the two away wins to the toptwo sides showing the club is worthy of premiership contention. Not only does Banyule have form on its side, it also has the superior head-to-head record against Thomastown – having won both battles of the Bears in 2018, including a five-point win Round 4 and a 55-point demolition at Main Street Reserve in Round 11. James Kroussoratis has been one of the dominant players in the competition this year, leading the goal kicking with 68 majors, despite spending plenty of time up the ground. The match-winner has been a key reason to Banyule’s success this year, and why their transition into Division 2 has been seamless. BANYULE

Daniel Kelly, Daniel Camilleri and Scott Gumbleton have also been vital to the Bears’ susses in 2018, all consistently featuring in their side’s best on a weekly basis. Meanwhile, former Essendon star Brent Stanton is set to return for the finals series. Thomastown had to go through an emotional rollercoaster to book its place in the finals. Needing a win, or a loss by less than 12 points to Diamond Creek in Round 18, the Bears had to fight back from a 50-point deficit during the third term With an incredible final 40 minutes, they were able to peg the margin back to two points by the final siren, creating a scene of jubilation from the Thomastown faithful, as they set up their first finals appearance since winning the 2014 Division 3 flag. In each of the three previous seasons after their promotion, Thomastown has finished in fifth place. The Bears will feel that they were due for some luck to fall their way this time around. A top-four finish has been a long time coming for Thomastown, but the key to getting to the finals has been their ability to not rely on any one particular player to produce a standout performance. Up forward, it has been the likes of Anthony Capeci, Jacob Osei-Duro and Matthew Ferraro who have carried the load – with the trio combining for 86 goals throughout the home and away season. Star ruckman Dylan Chapman has proven to be one of the recruits of the season, while Josh Beare has produced a stellar year and his leadership will be even more important during the finals with stellar co-captain Matthew Vasilevski sidelined by injury.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 - FIRST SEMI FINAL BANYULE This week we take on Thomastown in the first semi final. SENIORS: A very impressive performance against Lower Plenty to round out the home and away season and secure third position on the ladder. With both sides bucking the trend of resting players prior to finals, it was obvious early that neither side were prepared to flirt with form and a tough, and at times, brutal, contest ensued. Best on the day was Mannon Johnston, whose creativity and sound touch all over the ground were a highlight. He was ably supported by the midfield crew of Hogarth, Kelly, McDonald and Loton, who all put in solid contributions. Down back our defensive six were typically reliable, led again by Daniel Camilleri and Jacob Mitchell but joined by Tom Cowey playing a slightly different but extremely important role. All forwards were dangerous with Jordan and Barclay each registering three goals, while Riley Keath again stepped up in the big moments, kicking two quality majors – including a telling bomb on the run. Winning form is good form and we look forward to performing on a bigger stage this Sunday against Thomastown. Best players: Johnston, Hogarth,
THOMASTOWN We meet Banyule in the first semi finals. SENIORS: It was all Diamond Creek early and at half time we trailed by 39 points. The second half didn’t start well with our opponents stretching the lead to 50, but from there we managed to fight our way back e to trail by 23 points at 3/4 time. With crowd noise at fever pitch our opponents again seemed in control with two of the opening three goals of the last. We got a couple back to give us hope but then it was a real arm wrestle. We created opportunities but couldn’t convert and with every miss, the scoreboard and time clock was against us. A goal to Capeci at the 26-minute mark had the margin under the 10-point buffer we had going into the game and when Ferraro goaled a couple of minutes later the Thomastown faithful were in full voice. Although our gallant comeback fell two points short, it was a close enough margin to ensure our first Division 2 finals campaign since 2008. RESERVES: We played Diamond Creek and put a real emphasis on having a crack for each other. The first quarter we came out really flat and Diamond Creek came out firing, keeping us scoreless and kicking three 38
Camilleri, McDonald, Kelly, R.Keath, Mitchell. RESERVES: Last game of what has been a rough year and to finish the year off we had Caleb and Darcy fill in from the colts. Even though Lower jumped us from the start, the boys didn’t give up. With our young colts player really holding their own, we were just outclassed by a side that is well and truly ready for finals. To everyone that fill in and helped out during the year, I thank you for making it easier for me. To the players, you have been the best bunch of guys a coach could ask for and to see how far some of you have come over the last two years is very rewarding to see. Glynn had a standout year, Josh continued from last year’s form, Coulson as a young leader really stood up at CHF. To Rizz and Wounders you made every Saturday interesting and bloody enjoyable, I thank you two immensely. To Borgy, you are a good leader and you have had a great year mate. And last of all to the three retirees Hays, Del and Bobsy well done on everything you boys have done over the years of your football career. You will all truly be missed. Best players: Ostwald, Dunnachie, Coulson, Gray, Mckenzie and Hoppy.
goals themselves. We had a talk about our work rate and playing for each other and having that never give up attitude. We came out in the second quarter and played the type of footy we wanted to play, keeping them goalless and getting back in the game. In the second half, everyone gave there all for each other and we were able to draw the game. Credit to all the players, it was our best performance for the year NETBALL: By the time this goes to print our netball girls will have contested the grand final and we wish them the very best. SOCIAL NEWS: Presentation Night to be held on Thursday September 27 at Bellagio Receptions in Epping. Tickets are $100 per person or $180 per couple. Please see a member of the Committee for tickets THANKS: Thanks to all our sponsors for supporting us in 2018. In particular, a special thank you to our major sponsors Mitsubishi South Morang, XPro Constructions, A Plus, Harcourts, Sherwood, Abela Design & Construction, and TS Auto Electrics. Thanks also to Luke Wakeling (aka PK) and his team for his coaching role over the last two years.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 - Player Profiles BANYULE
14. Riley Loton – Has had a break-out year as our #1 rover. Tough as old steel capped boots. 15. Riley Hogarth – “Hogey Bear” has skills and decision-making ability that defy his age. One of the best heavy traffic players in the competition. 16. Devin McDonald – Has played in every single position on the ground in 2018. A beast who thrives on contested football. 19. Sean Downes – Our hardest working forward who is prepared to run both ways and thrives on run-down tackles inside 50. 20. Tom Cowey – Mr Versatile. Tommy is a club favourite with an abundance of natural ability. 22. Nicholas Mayne – Northern Knights selection has restricted Mayney to three games but will be available for a big finals campaign. 23. Mannon Johnston – Has been an outstanding leader all year and is the brains behind one of the most dangerous forward lines in the NFNL. 24. Michael Italia – Multiple MVP winner, premiership vice-captain and loved by his coaches and teammates. Mick owns some of the best mitts in the club. 25. Adam Fulton – Fashionably unfashionable, “Darrell” is a tough, old school full back whose strength is highlighted in one on one contests.
27. Daniel Camilleri – The coach’s favourite, “Cama” has taken his game to another level this year and still has everyone guessing as to whether he’s left or right footed. 28. Jacob Mitchell – “Cob” is another who has thrived on his move down back. Possesses great awareness and follows our game plan to the letter. Few are better with ball in hand. 29. Scott Gumbleton – “Gumby” has had another outstanding year in the ruck. A captain who leads by actions and makes all around him stand taller. 32. Bailey Jordan – An absolute beast who is the competition’s premier power forward. “BJ” either marks and goals or puts the ball in the lap of our smalls. 33. Adam Barclay – “Dad” has returned to our forward line after a successful stint down back and is returning to the form that saw him represent Victoria at VAFA level. 38. James Clark – Has taken a number of high-profile scalps this year and is one of the first picked players each week. 43. James Kroussoratis – The NFNL’s equivalent to Winx, “Rata” kicks goals, sets up goals and adds A Grade quality to our midfield. Good luck to opposition defenders.
THOMASTOWN
13. Jacob Osei-Duro – CHF who crashes packs like no one else. Reliable and thumping kick for goal. 15. Salvatore Mamone – Beautiful left foot who has leather poisoning in 2018. Fantastic first year at the cave. 16. Dylan Chapman – Rooster has made the competition his own in his first season. Athletic ruckman who never gets beaten, just look at the man. 17. Nicholas Horman – Lightning wingman who can find the goals with ease, if you blink you will miss him. 18. Rodney Carruthers – Cuddles has settled in seamlessly. His voice and experience in the forward line will be vital come finals. 19. Luke Fellows – Never gets beaten one on one. Has 10 B&Fs to go to catch his old man but is well on his way with the form he is in. 22. Anthony Calafiore – Small forward who always finds the goals. Forward pressure is excellent and has been a revelation in the last month. 23. Sash Spiroski – Utility. Doesn’t know whether to train with the forwards or the backs. Elite skills. 25. Matthew Ferraro – Fev does not miss a set shot. Still kicked plenty of goals in 2018 despite missing half the season. 29. Lane Tucker – Best kick at the club. Small defender with great attacking prowess and speed to burn. 31. Adrian Lesar – Wears his opponent like a glove. Would not want to play on this man.
37. Nicholas Fiore – Injury riddled year for our tall defender. Back on the park at the right time of the year to annoy opposition forwards. 39. Matthew Dirkx – Mr Consistent with yet another good year. Runs all day and can play every position on the ground. 42. Jordan Cugnetto – Ultimate clubman. Puts his heart and soul on the line for Thomastown week in week out. 48. Christian Toppi – First year of senior footy and no one has heard him speak. Lockdown defender who you don’t want to play on. 55. Lachlan Evans – Utility who can ruck, play on the wing or play as a CHF. Would wear his Kathmandu jacket in a game if he could. 57. Josh Tonna – 18 year old holding down CHB. Amazing future at the cave and great first season. 58. Nicholas Klooster – The Kloost is another young kid playing as a full back. Takes the monsters and beats them every week. 62. Frank Multari – Work horse who doesn’t stop chasing and tackling. Fitness freak. 63. Jonathan McCumber-Kelly – Small defender who can run and use his skills to advantage. Quick. 64. Robbie Chadwick – Elite pressure forward who doesn’t stop working. Ultimate team player. 69. Shannon Ball – Ballsy kicks goals for fun. Dangerous mid-size forward who can take a good grab.
2. Jake Truefeldt – Former premiership player who has returned to the club and playing the role of general in the backline. 3. Brent Stanton – AFL duties has restricted him to eight home and away games but availability for finals gives us additional quality, leadership and running power. 5. Nick Biscontin – One of the premier key backs in the competition. A booming kick and loves to run and bounce. 8. Daniel Kelly – Our clearance specialist, “DK” has had another superb year and is primed for a huge finals series. 9. Jacob Smith – His form over the past six weeks has coincided with the team’s rise. Has silky skills and a knack of finding himself in acres of space. 10. Ben Embleton – Benny hasn’t been beaten down back all season. A strong mark, great tackler and owns a beautiful left leg. 12. Matthew Yarwood – There’s not a player in Division 2 who has more impact per touch than Yardy. Elite by foot. 13. Riley Keath – Self-professed finals player. Plays forward, midfield and even in the ruck and is tough as anybody who wears a Banyule jumper.
1. Anthony Capeci – The human highlight reel. Quick, agile and classy. Has had as many jumper numbers as ‘plays of the week’ this season. 2. Matthew Vasilevski (C) – Captain Fantastic. Booming left footer whose ability and leadership go hand in hand. 3. David Folino – Highly skilful midfielder who has had the worst finger injury since Daniel Chick. Brilliant finish to the season has him primed for September. 4. James Rizzolio – Has successfully/unsuccessfully completed more fend-offs than Dustin Martin. Brute of a midfielder who’s had a fantastic year on ball. 5. Adrian Natoli – Best ball user in the comp. Just ask him. Superb season on the wing and looks set for a big finals series. 8. Daniel Francis – Big forward who is exceptional on the lead. Injury plagued season hasn’t shown us the full effect he will have on Thomastown FC. 9. Daniel Chadwick – Hard-nosed midfielder who works harder than anyone else. Racks up the footy and leads by example. 10. Robert Barbara – The second-best number 10 at the club. 10B is always a reliable defender who leads the backline extremely well. 12. Josh Beare (C) – Captain Courageous. Has taken 500 marks this year and has the best hands in the comp. Only if he knew who his opponent was. 40

In Saturday’s second semi final game, St Mary’s hit the lead midway through the first term against Panton Hill and was never headed – running out a winner by 23 points to ensure it claimed the first grand final berth. Only 13 goals were kicked all day as both defences were well on top. The Burra looked in control but were unable to blow the lead out beyond five goals. The margin remained about four goals for most of the game – giving the Redbacks a sniff had they been able to find an avenue to goal. But they managed just one major in the last quarter and a half – never looking likely to win apart from a brief period early in the third term. St Mary’s registered its first ever senior finals win and would be favoured now to go all the way. It was a great day for the Burra, whose reserves won through to the grand final without losing a game all year. Sunday’s first semi final began in the same vein – with Laurimar leading two goals to nil at the first break. But the scoring increased late in the contest as each team had a potent forward on the day. Seventeen-year-old Sam Indian booted six goals for the Lions, while at the other end Josh Williamson snared four and looked equally dangerous. The last term was a 10-goal shootout. South Morang lost the lead with under two minutes to go and then regained it in the last minute and hung on. The Power’s effort in making the finals was enormous. It was only the club’s second year in senior football and they only won two games in their inaugural season – finishing eighth on the ladder with a percentage under 50. A year later, Laurimar finished fourth with 10 wins and a percentage just below 120. Based on the rate of improvement, they will a force to be reckoned with in 2019. All teams seemed to get through the weekend without significant injuries. Close finishes are nothing new to South Morang. The

Lions have been involved in four finals with margins two goals or less in the past three years – including a kick on the siren in the 2015 preliminary final loss to Epping. Sunday’s win means South Morang now plays in the preliminary final for the fifth-successive year, with the winner of this week’s game against Panton Hill at the Whittlesea Showgrounds to play St Mary’s a week later in the premiership decider. The ledger stands at one apiece between the teams for the season. The Lions scored a 17-point win in Round 7 at Mill Park Lakes Reserve – with James Hewson kicking four. The Redbacks gained revenge at A.E. Cracknell Reserve in Round 13 – winning by 40 points in a 32goal shootout. Rhys Boyden booted six and Matthew Byron five for the victors, with Sam Indian slotting five for South Morang. The likely line-ups this weekend are similar to those from the most recent clash. Matthew Byron is expected to be back for Panton Hill. Declan CarsonMcLennan would be another possibility to bolster the forward line, which struggled against St Mary’s. The Lions may opt to recall Mitch Dickson, but except the changes to be few, if any. The team that can hold the opposing potent forwards will go a long way to winning the contest. Panton Hill’s mainstays down back are Mitch Anderson and Brent Ryan. Both would be in the running for club best and fairest and one is likely to get the job on Indian. The Lions have several defenders who may get the job on Rhys Boyden and likely inclusion Matthew Byron. Ben Power, Reece Jones and James Mellerick would be possibilities for the job. But solidly built Mathew Robinson could also be swung to defence if required. The midfield battle will also be crucial. Panton Hill ruckman Nick Parks has been outstanding all year and has been giving his midfielders first use of the ball. South Morang also has a talented midfield group – with Tye Hall and Cory Giannone being in good form late in the season. Both teams would feel like they are well qualified to challenge for the flag and a high-quality game is anticipated. The curtain raiser sees Heidelberg West reserves with Reservoir for a spot in the reserves grand final against St Mary’s. WWW. NFNL. ORG. AU

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 - PRELIMINARY FINAL PANTON HILL This week we take on South Morang in the preliminary final.
LAST WEEK: Our first final in five years didn’t quite work out as we were expecting on Saturday against a full-strength St Mary’s line-up. St Mary’s were pretty much at their very best for longer periods than ourselves, which in the end cost us dearly. Missed opportunities early in the game didn’t help us. We had 12 inside 50s for one goal, as opposed to St Mary’s who had eight inside 50 entries for four goals. That pretty much told the story and we just didn’t recover from that score line, going down by 23 points. Mitch Anderson when moved forward helped us get within 10 points and at that point we felt we finally had some momentum. But unfortunately, we couldn’t sustain that pressure and St Mary’s responded as good sides do. Our better players were clearly our defence who worked tirelessly all day and although our midfield was beaten on the day, they were unrelenting in their work rate. Final score: St. Mary’s 8.14.62 def Panton Hill 5.9.39
SOUTH MORANG We certainly earned our spot in the preliminary final this week!
THIS WEEK: As I said to the guys post-match, we worked hard all year and deserved the second chance. This week provides another opportunity against South Morang in the preliminary final to hopefully lock in a Grand Final appearance. I have enormous belief in this group and am confident, based on their body language post-match, that they will respond again, as they have all season.
Red Rooster South Morang. GO LIONS!
SENIORS: Last week we met a very determined Laurimar team, who played four hard quarters of finals footy. In a tight game for three quarters, scoring opened up in the last and some exciting passages of play were enjoyed by the faithful. Tizza has only just come back to earth, after his sensational specky in front of the opposition crowd! Best in an overall team effort win were Tizza, Browny, J Cutts, Chief - six of the finest, Scotty West Coast and Hewy. THIS WEEK: Today were square off against Panton Hill in the preliminary final in what is sure to be another cracking game. Having each won at our home venues, a neutral ground should prove interesting. It will take four quarters of our style of footy and the rest should take care of itself fellas. NETBALL News Section 9 Grand Final – Hurstbridge 2 vs West Ivanhoe 3 A thriller between Hurstbridge and West Ivanhoe
came down to the wire with Hurstbridge taking out the grand final by two goals. Hurstbridge were quick to turn the ball over off West Ivanhoe’s first centre pass with a missed goal resulting in a pick-up from GD Tamsin Leonard. West Ivanhoe made it hard for Hurstbridge to transition from defence into attack with tight one on one defensive pressure. A missed goal from Hurstbridge resulted in a West Ivanhoe goal, however, neither side seemed settled under the ring to start. Good movement and feeding from Hurstbridge WA Teagan Nash led GA Paris O’Day into scoring their first goal of the game after almost three minutes of play. A series of mistakes from both sides stopped either side from pulling ahead of the other with scores tied at 4-4 at the end of the quarter. The second quarter started with a good intercept from West Ivanhoe’s goal keeper, however, Hurstbridge GK Stephanie Smith then did the same down the other end as both team’s continued to struggle moving the ball forward. After plenty of turnovers, West Ivanhoe finally scored the first goal of the second quarter. However, from there Hurstbridge stepped up with GK Smith deflecting the ball smartly to WD Gemma Raif and then their teammates quickly worked the ball down to their GA Tyla McAlear for a goal. Hurstbridge WA Shelbie Buckwell then intercepted the ball and West Ivanhoe found themselves another goal down. With the centre pass in Hurstbridge’s favour, West Ivanhoe fell further behind their opponents. Hurstbridge GD Tamsin received a caution for contact and then West Ivanhoe’s goal shooter was able to score. Hurstbridge maintained their lead during the rest of the quarter and survived a last-minute scare from West Ivanhoe. In the final 45 seconds of the first half, West Ivanhoe controlled the ball and were able to work it into their shooting circle, however, the defensive pressure from Hurstbridge was too good with goal attempt after goal attempting missing the ring. Hurstbridge extended their lead to four goals at the start of the third quarter, however n intercept from West Ivanhoe’s goal keeper resulted in them getting a

goal back. West Ivanhoe’s centre did well to pick up a loose ball, however, a step from her teammate stopped them from being able to capitalise. With the turnover West Ivanhoe’s centre then received a caution for unnecessary contact. A few small errors from Hurstbridge allowed West Ivanhoe to win the ball back with their movement becoming quicker into their shooters who seemed more confident. Scores grew closer once again, with only a goal separating the two sides with a missed West Ivanhoe goal on the three-quarter time whistle halting the teams from ending the quarter level. A lively crowd spurred both teams on in the final quarter as Hurstbridge held on to win. Quick movement from Hurstbridge C Kate Harrington and WA Nash allowed their side to find room easily in their goal circle and they were able to push their lead out to five goals in the first few minutes of the quarter. From there West Ivanhoe ignited with their defensive pressure lifting causing a turnover that allowed them to score and then score again off their centre pass. A missed goal from Hurstbridge and good positioning under the ring from West Ivanhoe’s goal defence allowed the scores to narrow once again. Despite a lift in intensity, West Ivanhoe seemed to feel the heat when it mattered the most in the final four minutes of the match with a loose ball rolling out of court and no player trying to keep it in despite having ample time to chase. Hurstbridge, sensing West Ivanhoe getting closer, continued to apply defensive pressure to force turnovers. An intercept from Hurstbridge WD Raif was crucial in keeping possession in their favour during the final two minutes of play and resulted in a muchneeded goal. Down by three with a minute and a half left to play, West Ivanhoe still had time to turn the ball over and score. They scored off their centre pass with their GS shooting an impressive long bomb, however by the time they moved the ball into the net a minute had passed. Hurstbridge were able to hang onto possession for the final 30 seconds of play and win the game with their GS Emma Thomas named the best on court. FINAL: Hurstbridge 2 (20) def West Ivanhoe 3 (18)

Section 10 Grand Final – Reservoir 2 vs Watsonia 5 Watsonia 2 upset minor premiers Reservoir in the Section 10 Grand Final, winning the match by five goals.
Watsonia got out to a quick start with their goal shooter easily converting a missed goal from Reservoir and then her shooting partner scoring off the next centre pass. Reservoir’s shooters were nervous early with another missed goal being capitalised on by Watsonia before finally, a replayed ball from the Saints resulted in a Reservoir goal. A few shaky minutes passed with both sides turning the ball over before a well-placed feed from Reservoir WA Chloe Simmons saw her team get back to within one. Scores were level with four minutes remaining in the first quarter after an intercept from Reservoir GD Shacara Byers and a swing pass from GA Kellie Shannon opened up GS Eboney Jackson in the circle. Scoring quickly off the following centre pass, Reservoir hit the front, however, Watsonia stayed close behind and quickly tied the scores up again with the quarter ending 7-7. Watsonia worked the ball into their goal attack quickly to hit the front at the start of the second quarter, getting out to a three-goal lead with turnover after turnover going their way. A contact call against Watsonia goal attack and a smart bounce pass into the circle from Reservoir WA Simmons saw GA Shannon confidently slot a goal in before Watsonia then matched them scoring off another turnover. Reservoir drew level with Watsonia again, however, the Saints were careful with their centre pass advantage to keep possession in their favour. Both sides were neck and neck before Watsonia upped their defensive pressure to turn the ball over and capitalise. In the last ten seconds of the half, Watsonia’s goal keeper took an important intercept and sent the ball flying down the court, it swiftly moved to their goal attack who was standing just inside the goal circle as the whistle blew and a contact call went against Reservoir. She focused on the ring and shot an extreme long bomb into the net to extend her team’s lead out to four goals at half time.
Reservoir started the third quarter with the centre pass and good movement between WA Simmons and GA Shannon allowed them to score quickly. Tight defensive pressure from Watsonaia saw them get the ball back after they missed a goal as their wing defence backed up a deflection and their goal shooter pushed their lead out to five. Despite some good attempts to turn the ball over and an impressive intercept from GD Byers, Reservoir fell six behind by the quarter’s end. Both sides looked tired in the final quarter with plenty of turnovers going the way of both teams. Reservoir’s defensive pressure went up a notch in the early part of the quarter causing Watsonia to stumble. Sharp shooting from Reservoir GA Shannon allowed her team to hit the front after Watsonia fell into a slump. Both teams continued to push on through fatigue and went goal for goal after that before a breaking call against Reservoir on their centre pass gave Watsonia the opportunity to hit the front again and they did. Scoring quickly off their next centre pass, Watsonia found themselves with an edge as Reservoir’s defensive pressure slipped. A missed Reservoir goal and contact call against them saw the Saints further extend their lead and continue to push themselves. Reservoir tried their hardest to win the ball back with players trying to deflect the ball, however, once Watsonia had ball in hand they were able to hold onto possession and take their time moving to their goal circle. Watsonia’s shooters held space well in the circle and continued to shoot their team ahead despite Reservoir’s defensive duo GD Byers and GK Karly Train doing their best to stop them. Watsonia GA Maddison Filev was named best on court with her side winning the grand final by five goals after surviving the late Reservoir charge. FINAL: Watsonia 5 (34) def Reservoir 2 (29) WWW.
