EDITORIAL Congratulations to St Mary’s for winning both the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 seniors and reserves grand finals last weekend. It was the first senior premiership for St Mary’s and I am sure it will be a day that will be remembered for a very long time. St Mary’s will now move up to A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 in 2019. Well done to president Paul Millet and everyone involved at the club. Our attention now turns to the A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 Grand Final between the Eltham and the Lower Plenty. Eltham has set the standard all season and has enjoyed an extremely successful season to date, with both seniors and reserves sides making it into the grand final. Lower Plenty has been equally successful with its seniors and under-19 teams also making it through to the grand final. Diamond Creek will be Eltham’s opponents in the reserves, while Lower Plenty’s under-19s will play Heidelberg in under-19 grand final. Congratulations to all four clubs for their season to date and I wish all teams the best of luck in their respective grand finals. The NFNL netball season ended last Friday night. All four Section 1-4 grand finals produced some exciting matches, highlighted by the outstanding standard of skill and athleticism displayed by all players. Congratulations to the following premiers: Section 1 – Diamond Creek 1 Section 2 – Diamond Creek 2

Section 3 – Bundoora 1 Section 4 – Greensborough 3 Season 2018 has been an outstanding success with a record number of 90 teams entering our netball competitions. A big thank you to NFNL Netball Manager Delwyn Berry and new Umpire Coach Amanda Dale, supported by Anne Castles, for their commitment to developing and mentoring our netball umpires. Their hard work has certainly paid off to make the NFNL the most professional netball league in the northern region of Melbourne. This is an exciting time of the year and I understand that during finals the stakes are raised, and emotions can run high. But this is not a reason to change your behaviour. Remember that your behaviour also reflects on the image and reputation of your club and the NFNL. Let’s make this time of the year a time for celebration, and for those fortunate enough to still be involved, enjoy the moment and remember that there are many people wishing that they were still involved, but they can only watch from the sidelines. Enjoy your celebrations but remember, celebrate responsibly. Good luck to all teams this weekend. See you at the football. Peter McDougall Chief Executive Officer

NFNL News PANTHERS SET FOR THE BIG STAGE

by James Strebinos

It has been 16 years since a senior flag has been brought home to Panther Place but a win this weekend can finally end the club’s premiership drought. Eltham will take on Lower Plenty in the A Plus Solutions Division 2 Grand Final at Preston City Oval on Saturday. In their first season back in second division, the Panthers have won 17 of their 19 matches, including three wins over Lower Plenty. Eltham coach Paul King says his group is raring to go in a clash that could see them promoted straight back into Meadows Greyhounds Division 1. “I think everyone is excited about the weekend and we all want to get stuck into it so it’s a pretty exciting feel around the club at the moment,” King told The Northerner. “The boys were pretty disappointed being relegated to Division 2 last season and we just want to get back to the first division where we feel pretty competitive.” Despite winning all three outings against Lower Plenty this year, the past two outings have been decided by a combined margin of only 22 points. The Panthers trailed for the opening three quarters of the second semi final a fortnight ago, before storming home in tough conditions at Epping Recreation Reserve to win by 14 points. Despite the close call a fortnight ago, King said his side is going into this week’s decider with great confidence that it can continue its winning run against the Bears. “We’re confident that if we play our best footy then we can get the job done,” King said. “We are certainly not underestimating Lower Plenty because our last two games have only been decided by 22 points in total. “They played very well in the prelim where their tall blokes came into the game in the good weather and were very strong in the air. “We are confident but need to be right on our game to get the job done on the weekend.” With the club’s reserves also playing off in a grand final

this weekend, along with its under-19s competing in a preliminary final, Eltham’s depth remains extensive. While impressed with the club’s success across all three grades, King said it also provided a few headaches amongst the selectors. “There will be a couple of selection headaches for sure as we had two players who didn’t play on the weekend that are both senior players,” he said. “In the end, it’ll be a manner of if they get through training this week and are fit enough for selection but there will definitely be some headaches for sure.” King has enforced the “play your role” approach during the finals series and will continue to use the motto on the weekend. “We just need 22 blokes playing their role and us as a team playing our best footy and all contributing, which should hopefully win us the game,” he said. “We trained pretty strongly last week and we hope to train strongly again this week so we can come out firing and hope to secure a premiership flag and a return to Div 1 footy.” WWW. NFNL News BEARS CONFIDENT OF TURNING THE TABLES

by Nicholas Sacco

Lower Plenty is heading into the A Plus Labour

Solutions Division 2 grand final full of confidence despite losing to Eltham in each of their three meetings this year. After falling to the Panthers in the second semi a fortnight ago, the Bears bounced back with a 20-point victory against Banyule in last week’s preliminary final. The win handed Lower Plenty its first grand final appearance since their 2011 triumph and coach Ben Turner said the club was looking to make the most of the opportunity. “We’re pumped. Opportunities to play in grand finals don’t come around too often,” Turner told The Northerner. “Whilst we haven’t had the results that would suggest we would beat Eltham, we feel like we have been really competitive with them for large parts of the contests.” The two sides have played out three intriguing battles in 2018, with the average margin just 19 points. The largest margin was 36 points back in Round 8, however the Bears led that game at half time. “What we know from previous experiences tell us that we need to play at our very best to be able to beat them. They’re a high-quality side and they have a number of talented players across all areas of the field,” Turner said. “We felt like in the semi final we competed with them very well, but we just weren’t able to sustain it for long enough. So, the challenge for our club is to be able to try and sustain it for longer periods of time to give ourselves every chance of being in front in the end.” After trailing by two points at half time of its preliminary final, Lower Plenty produced a dominant second half to contain Banyule to just one goal. Turner thinks the lessons learned from both finals over the past two weeks will help his side perform well on grand final day. “We spoke a lot about trying to get contributions from everybody and not relying on individuals to get us there,” he said. “I felt we had a lot more of a team-based mindset towards the back end of (last week’s) game that we

4

probably didn’t quite get from the semi final. “That will probably be a focus for us again this week coming into the grand final.” One of Lower Plenty’s strengths all season has been its tall timber, headline by the likes of Patrick Flynn, Darcy Barden, Tom Keys and Tom Blake – with the latter a clear best afield in the preliminary final victory. Turner is hoping his side’s height advantage becomes a factor on Saturday. “We’re very fortunate and very lucky to have a core group of talls that are agile and can play in different areas of the ground,” he said. “Tommy [Blake] played a terrific game for the footy club and he just showed to us again that he is maturing pretty well as a footballer. “The big blokes don’t get any smaller and when the game starts to slow up a bit they do a power of work, so that will definitely be an advantage for us.” Lower Plenty’s 2011 premiership win was also the last time it played on Preston City Oval, a ground that differs from the Bears’ home ground at Montmorency Park. Lower Plenty is expected to name an unchanged line up for the grand final, but Turner didn’t rule out the possibility of tweaking the side. “We’ve got a few things to consider coming in to Saturday, but we have to work out who we feel will be the best 22 to give Lower Plenty the best chance to win,” he said.

NFNL News BURRA WIN FIRST FLAG

by Doug Long

St Mary’s won its first senior premiership with a 13-point win over a determined Panton Hill in the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 Grand Final. The win was sealed late in the game when Nic Daisley stuck a great tackle, won the free and duly converted from 25 metres out. The siren in the 11.7 (73) to 8.12 (60) win at the Whittlesea Showgrounds signalled the culmination of ten years of hard work by the club. St Mary’s coach Fabian Carelli praised his team’s application during his post-match address. “Every time I challenged you, you responded”, he said. St Mary’s lost only one game for the season – way back in Round 5 against grand final opponent Panton Hill. Despite dominating early, the Burra was unable to find the major opening and the Redbacks took control of the game midway through the first term – kicking the only two goals of the quarter. The first was one for the highlights reel – with Alex Tsardakis kicking the ball over his head for the major. St Mary’s has been outstanding in second terms throughout the year and the grand final was no exception. Chris Petroro kick-started their charge when he ran into the goal square for their first goal. Then he set up multiple scoring opportunities with his precise disposal as the Burra booted four in a row. Against the run of play, Jonty Rushton kicked a great goal for Panton Hill from a pack. A minute later, Rhys Boyden’s bullocking work forced the ball forward where Rushton won a free for a superb tackle. With the aid of a 50 metre penalty, he booted a goal from the line to reduce the deficit to a solitary behind. A late goal to Daniel Dober gave St Mary’s an eightpoint lead at the main break. The Burra looked to take a strangle-hold on the game with the first two goals after half time. Jacob Yeomans was looking dangerous and kicked his third just two minutes into the term. Then a great kick from Jake Dambrauskas saw Nick Dean mark on the line to give St Mary’s a game high

19-point lead. Panton Hill fought back to reduce the deficit at the last break to a manageable nine points. At the break, St Mary’s Carelli told his players to hit the 45s and also run and carry. Then he urged the group to create history for the club. They held the Redbacks at arm’s length for most of the final term, but Panton Hill’s Alex Tsardakis threatened to spoil the party. He marked cleverly to goal, then kicked his fourth goal – a wonderful snap under pressure at the 22-minute mark put his team within eight points. However, it wasn’t quite enough. “Couldn’t be prouder of the way the boys went about it”, said Panton Hill coach Steve Layt. Layt was pleased with defenders Brent Ryan and Mitch Anderson – who took numerous intercept marks and then used the ball well by foot. Myles Guldon was named best player on the ground. He took some strong contested marks late in the game and booted a crucial fourth quarter goal. Captain Dillan Ronalds led well from the front all day. Down back, 2015 Reservoir premiership player Leigh Sullivan performed to a high level and added a second premiership medallion to his collection. Ben Mossuto and Mitch Hocking were busy through the midfield, while Nick Dean kicked two goals and had a hand in a few others. FINAL: St Mary’s 11.7 (73) def Panton Hill 8.12 (60) WWW. NFNL. ORG. AU

NFNL News ROOS THROUGH TO ANOTHER GRAND FINAL

by Jarrad Gardner

Macleod booked its place in a fourth-consecutive

Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 grand final with a hard fought 13-point victory over North Heidelberg in the second semi final. The Roos held off a second-half fightback from the Bulldogs to win 14.11 (95) to 12.10 (82) at Preston City Oval. Macleod coach Garry Ramsay was full of praise for his side post-match. “It feels very good. I know how hard the group’s worked and I’m very proud of them and very excited,” he said. “The game sort of went in momentum swings. We had the momentum in the first half and then they wrestled it back and we had to dig deep for the win.” Patrick Martin and Reid Brandt both proved a handful for the North Heidelberg defence, booting three goals apiece. Anthony Doherty, Hamish Paynter and Liam Brandt all chipped in with two. Brandt was also named best on ground, with Ramsay singling him out in the rooms post-match for his ability to continuously put his head over the ball. Jake Brown was named best afield for the losing side, while Jesse Tardio put in another great finals performance. Kyle Green and Shane Harvey both booted three majors, while Brent Harvey and Leigh Gilbert each kicked two. Macleod came out of the blocks quickly and did the majority of the attacking early on. However, the Roos were only able to put two majors on the scoreboard through Doherty and Paynter, before Gilbert kicked the Bulldogs first at the 20-minute mark. Both sides traded two goals apiece in a frantic final five minutes of the first term, with the Roos heading into the break five points ahead. The Roos, led the Patrick Martin and Reid Brandt, dominated the second term. Martin booted three of his side’s four unanswered goals to open breathing space, while Brandt kicked two of his own. Shane Harvey booted a late one for the Bulldogs as they went into half time 33 points adrift.

The game flipped on its head in the third term, with North Heidelberg doing all the attacking. Goals to Gilbert and both Shane and Brent Harvey gave the Bulldogs a new lease of life. Kyle Green booted a goal from 45m on the boundary before Liam Hunt snapped another around his body to cut the deficit to just a solitary point. Ramsay praised the Bulldogs for their efforts in the third term to change the flow of the match. “The got some clear stoppages out of the middle and we didn’t lock down well,” he said, reflecting on his side’s worst quarter of the game. “I reckon they got three or four clear stoppages in a row, which we’ll have to improve on going forward.” Goals to Anthony Doherty and Joel Kidd in the final minutes sent the Roos into the final change 13 points ahead. Green snapped the first of the final term as the Bulldogs looked to make another push, however goals to both Liam and Reid Brandt, as well as Daniel O’Brien, put the result beyond doubt for the Roos. Shane Harvey and Green goaled late for the Bulldogs but it was to no avail as the final siren sounded, booking Macleod’s spot in the big dance. The Roos could look to bring in a few faces who missed the semi final win. “It’ll be interesting. I’m not 100% sure who will come back and if we lose anyone from today, but we’ll get to recovery and assess it all,” Ramsay said. FINAL: Macleod 14.11 (95) def Nth Heidelberg 12.10 (82) WWW. NFNL. NFNL News SAAD POWERS ROOSTERS INTO PRELIMINARY FINAL

by Christopher Chrysostomou

It was a performance that will live long in the memory of everyone in attendance at Preston City Oval. Ahmed Saad is already known as one of the most electrifying players in the Northern Football Netball League. But even by his own lofty standards, the West PrestonLakeside star put on show that will go down as one of the greatest ever seen in NFNL finals history. The star forward kicked 10 goals in West PrestonLakeside’s 18.8 (116) to 9.10 (64) first semi final victory over Bundoora. It wasn’t just the tally that was impressive, it was the way Saad achieved the feat that made it even more special. The 28-year-old entered the game off the back of a disappointing performance against North Heidelberg, where he was held goalless in the qualifying final defeat. But Saad cast aside the pressure early in the semi final, with three goals in the first quarter to give the Roosters a four-point advantage at the first break. That included an incredible volley out of mid-air from the goal square. Despite leading at the first change, the Roosters trailed for much of the first half and were down by nine points at the main break. Bundoora may have entered the game undermanned amid a host of injuries in recent weeks, but the reigning premier looked every chance of going backto-back if it could overcome the Roosters. Gary Moorcroft and Josh Grabowski kicked four goals between them in the first half, while Josh Iacobaccio was starring across half back. West Preston-Lakeside’s fightback began with a teamlifting goal from Luke Lirosi at the start of the third term. Lirosi is known as one of the bravest players in the NFNL and was once again putting his body on the line for the Roosters – highlighted by a courageous mark running back with the flight of the ball. Patrick Karnezis returned to his best form in the third term. The former Brisbane and Collingwood 8

player used his strong frame to bust through packs and kicked two goals for the Roosters to the Preston Market end. Bundoora also hit the scoreboard in the third term, courtesy of goals to Damandeep Aujila, Moorcroft and Kain Proctor. With scores level at three quarter time, both teams needed someone to break the game open. That man proved to be Saad. The mercurial forward kicked five goals in the final term to drag his side to victory and cap off his own game with a perfect 10 majors. Saad kicked a behind with his first shot on goal in the final term to give the Roosters the lead, before Josh Novelli kicked the all-important first goal to kick-start a run seven goals in 14 minutes for this side. Saad kicked the next four goals, which included a fly kick in mid air that will be considered one of the goals of the season. Bundoora defender Brent Marshall could do little but watch the ball sail over his head, as Saad continued to terrorise the Bulls. The Roosters piled 8.4 to zero in the final quarter to storm into the preliminary final, where they will face North Heidelberg for the second time in two weeks. The match will decide who faces Macleod in the grand final. FINAL: WP-Lakeside 18.8 (116) def Bundoora 9.10 (64)

NFNL News LOWER BOOKS GRAND FINAL PLACE

by Ben Pascuzzi

Lower Plenty progressed to its first grand final since 2011 with a 20-point win over Banyule in the A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 preliminary final. After trailing by two points at half time, Lower put the clamps on in the second half, keeping Banyule to just one major in the final two quarters to run away 10.10 (70) to 7.8 (50) victors at Epping Recreation Reserve. Despite kicking against a stiff wind in the final term, Lower were able to put through two goals to one to set up a grand final match-up against Eltham. Lower Plenty coach Ben Turner applauded his side’s feats in turning their form around after losing three of their past four games heading into the preliminary final. “It was all about effort,” Turner said.

headed into the second half with a two-point cushion.

“Last quarter of the game, grand final on the line, we just had to give it all.”

Despite Banyule having the lead, the game still felt like it was still being played in Lower’s favour, with the likes of Tom Keys and Darcy Barden continually stepping up in big contests.

Turner said the club was looking forward to the opportunity that presented in the grand final. “It’s a great opportunity. We’re just excited to be in it and hopefully we can get it done,” he said. “We can’t read too much into the last game (against Eltham), but I think just 22 blokes contributing will be our aim.” Turner believed his better players stood up when it counted in the preliminary final. He heralded Thomas Blake’s performance, which included a move to defence in the final term. Not only did Lower finish the game well, but they started it the better, outscoring Banyule by three goals to one, to open an early 11-point buffer. Banyule coach Pete Davey rallied his troops at the quarter time break and encouraged them to not drop their heads as he felt they could have had an early lead had they converted some of their opportunities heading inside 50. His side was inspired into action at the start of the second term, as two goals from Scott Gumbleton and another from Bailey Jordan saw Banyule take the lead for the first time. A couple of goal exchanges saw out the remainder of the first half, before two late behinds ensured Banyule

This was reflected in the third term, as Lower kicked the only two goals through Nick Mackay and Bailey Rodd to regain the lead and head into the final term with an 11-point advantage. Banyule started to get on top in the midfield early in the last term, but Blake stood tall for Lower Plenty in defence with a handful of intercept marks – ensuring his side was able to thwart off many Banyule attacks. Matthew Yarwood eventually got the breakthrough goal for Banyule in the sixth minute, but it was responded to two minutes later when Patrick Flynn put through a major. Brent Stanton then made a rare error coming out of defence, with Fabian Dorbolo able to intercept his kick and nail a set shot to put the game to bed. Blake’s efforts throughout the day, and particularly in the final term, saw him named as Lower Plenty’s best, along with Keys and Barden. Banyule’s best included Gumbleton, Riley Loton and Jake Truefeldt. The result ended a promising season by Banyule – who became the first reigning third division premier to reach the second division finals. FINAL: Lower Plenty 10.10 (70) def Banyule 7.8 (50) WWW. THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football Netball League Record

PREVIEW - North Heidelberg v WP-Lakeside For the second time in a fortnight North Heidelberg and West Preston-Lakeside meet at Preston City Oval, with the prize for this week’s winner a spot in the grand final. Given both sides have beaten confirmed grand finalist Macleod during the home and away season, the winner this week would give themselves every chance of causing a boilover in the premiership decider, should they make it through. Last week’s semi final performance would instil optimism in both sides, with the Bulldogs finishing just 13 points shy of the Roos, despite not playing their best, while West Preston-Lakeside’s fourth-quarter demolition of Bundoora showed its capabilities on the finals stage. Given the events of the past fortnight, the most important match-up in the preliminary final looks to be Ahmed Saad’s battle against Ryan McGhie. McGhie, with great support from his fellow North Heidelberg defenders, kept Saad goalless in the qualifying final. McGhie’s performance proved pivotal in his side’s 32-point triumph, in which the Roosters managed just five goals – all of which came before half time. Saad bounced back in a big way in the first semi – booting 10 goals in one of the most dazzling finals performances produced in league history to power his side to a 52-point triumph over the reigning premier. West Preston-Lakeside is far from a one-man team, but it cannot be denied that Saad is their barometer. The Roosters have an 8-1 record in games Saad has kicked four goals or more but are winless in matches when he has booted less than four. With Saad roaming the forward 50 at one end and Shane

by Samuel Zito

Harvey at the other, fans are in for a treat this weekend, with the two superstars looking to outdo each other with their freakish ability. Saad’s standout performance last week overshadowed Patrick Karnezis’ welcome return to top form. After an injury-interrupted campaign, Karnezis looks to now be moving freely, with his trademark powerful burst from stoppages a feature against the Bulls. With Luke Lirosi also in outstanding touch, Mark Kovacevic providing quality service to the midfield, and Jackson Clarke and Sam Glover in great form across half back – the Roosters’ top-end talent will provide the club confidence it can reverse the qualifying final loss. North Heidelberg has won the past two outings between the two sides and will take the mental edge into the game after its dominant second half two weeks ago – where its piled on seven unanswered goals, led superbly by a stellar performance from Brent Harvey. Last week’s loss to Macleod followed a similar script to the qualifying final, with the Bulldogs outplayed in the first half, before fighting back strongly in the second half. Despite falling short of the Roos – the Bulldogs have shown they are never out of a game. Jesse Tardio’s love affair with Preston City Oval has continued this year. A two-time winner of the best medallion in grand final wins – Tardio has starred in both of North’s finals this campaign and will be a player West Preston-Lakeside puts plenty of planning into. Billy Hogan looms as a key figure again this week after a dominant showing in the qualifying final. With so much attention focused on Harvey, Tardio and Liam Hunt through the Bulldogs midfield, Hogan could be the player who gets off the leash and propels the Bulldogs into the grand final.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 — PRELIMINARY FINAL NORTH HEIDELBERG Coming towards the business end of the season and today we face West Preston-Lakeside to gain a right to the big dance. SENIORS: Ultimately our second quarter was the difference, with Macleod more polished when it counted at crucial times during the game. Whilst never happy with defeat, we can be proud of our efforts once we got back on track after half time and made a real game of it – showing everyone when the match is played on our terms our game style stacks up against the best. This afternoon presents a new day and another challenge for our club that we have taken on with success throughout the year. The Roosters are a formidable opponent who will hunt us from the bounce, keen to atone for their defeat to us a fortnight back. Remember to back yourself and your teammate and do the hard things that define a team that really believes in itself, leaving no doubt it can go the distance no matter what is thrown at us. To Jimmy and the boys, the club is 100 percent behind you and presents another opportunity for our club to make its mark on the big stage so best of luck to all representing the club.

WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE The seniors and reserves play off in preliminary finals. SENIORS: We turned up to Preston with reasonable conditions. The siren was loud and clear, the treadmills from the twos game the day before had been removed and we were set to go. A week in footy is a long time and all members would’ve walked away a touch happier last week. In what was a great game of football Bundoora took it right up to us and threatened to inch away but our lads kept to the task and with unrelenting will went about breaking our opponents literally, with several casualties in their wake. PK had one of his best games for the club and Saady went from zero to 10 in just eight days. Or it just may have been the look in Chatty’s eyes on Saturday morning that stirred the fire in the belly. RESERVES: In Saturday’s game the boys went down to a slick Whittlesea. No doubt they will regroup with a victory today. No doubt the week off in the paddock didn’t suit. AROUND THE CLUB: The Jockeys syndicate is up and running so see Cooly to book and pay for your 14

NETBALL: NH 1 Grand Final: North Heidelberg (54) def by Diamond Creek (64). Goal for goal for three quarters before a strong Diamond Creek took over in the last. The margin in the end was n ot indicative of the how close the game was. A super effort by the team to make the final and you should be congratulated for your efforts. To Jess, Donna and Tony for administering the netball over the season and to the coaches and sponsors for your support, we say a big thank you. SPONSORSHIP: To all our business and player sponsors supported by our coterie group members we say a huge thanks of appreciation for your commitment to the club in season 2018. It has played a large part in our success to date. Plans are underway already for next season amd we would love to see everyone on board again in 2019. AROUND THE CLUB: Friday October 5 – Presentation Night at Heidelberg Golf Club is a preticketed event with numbers required and payment settled at $125 single or $240 double by September 21. See NHSC social media or Donna for further information; Sunday October 21 – NHSC Annual General Meeting at the Social Club. spot. Runs over the summer months. Preston YCW Districts are back in training and are back in A Grade so if you’re interested in having a hit see Tracey Egan. All levels catered for, as well as junior and women’s teams. Members Joker Jackpot is at $1000 and getting closer to going off. It continues every Thursday night and home game. Jerry was too good for all comers last week in the Golf Club, all six of them. The fear of moving the magnets destroyed poor old Tom’s game SENIOR PRESENTATION NIGHT: Is on Thursday 27th at The Sovereign. Bookings essential so see Fiona or Dooga to confirm and pay for your spot. NETBALL: Is coming back to Rooster land over summer with Net Set Go and Rock Up Netball. We will be fielding sides in the NFNL comp so if you’re interested in playing register you’re interest at the bar or canteen. JUNIORS: Coaching applications are now open for season 2019 so if you think you can help out give it a go. Were also looking for keen people to get involved on the committee. SPONSORS: Zaparas Lawyers have joined the club as a major sponsor and are located at the terminus in Gilbert Rd. If you need professional advice see the team at Zaparas.

PREVIEW - Eltham v Lower Plenty Eltham and Lower Plenty go head-to-head at Preston City Oval this Saturday to decide the A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 premiership.

The match ends a 16-year grand final drought for Eltham, who will be looking to emulate its 2002 Division 2 premiership success, while the Bears are back on the big stage for the first time since winning the 2011 flag. The two teams have appeared destined for a date in the grand final all season, with Eltham occupying first place on the ladder right throughout the year, while Lower Plenty sat in second spot for all but the opening round. Both sides were undefeated when they met at Eltham Central Park in Round 8. The home side prevailed by 36 points that day and continued its winning streak right up until Round 16. Eltham has also won the two corresponding matches between the sides, including an eight-point triumph at Montmorency Park in Round 12, as well as a 14-point win in the second semi a fortnight ago, which provided the Panthers a week’s break ahead of the grand final. Despite Eltham having the wood over Lower Plenty in all three of their encounters this season, the Bears have proven themselves capable in all three matches and would fancy themselves to turn the tables in this fourth, and most important, instalment. The Bears led right up until the opening stages of the fourth quarter in their semi final clash before being overrun in the final term. If they had taken more of their opportunities when in control during the first half, perhaps the final outcome would have been different. Lower was outstanding in last week’s preliminary final win over Banyule when it kicked away in the final term, despite kicking into the wind. The 20-point win against an opponent that had won eight of its past nine games will give Ben Turner’s men confidence and belief heading into the grand final. Given the outstanding seasons the two clubs have produced, it came as no surprise they featured prominently among the squad announced ahead of the selection of the A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 Team of the Year. Eltham had the most representatives in the 40-man squad with eight, whilst Lower Plenty had six players selected. Brent Macaffer has undoubtedly been Eltham’s

by Ben Pascuzzi

star player this season, with the Collingwood 2010 premiership player’s ball-winning ability and leadership through the middle of the ground proving a major asset for the Panthers. He and the likes of Anton Woods and Lewis and Bronson Glasgow provide the grunt work in the midfield for the Panthers, while Ben Montanaro’s work on the outside has added polish going forward. Tim Currie looms as one of the grand final’s key players. The star defender can lock down on big opponents, but also provides pivotal offence with his ability to intercept mark. He can also move forward to great effect – highlighted by a ten-goal haul against Fitzroy Stars. Lower Plenty will be hoping for big outings from its top-line stars, including Tom Keys, Patrick Flynn, Darcy Barden and Tom Blake. Keys and Flynn in particular have proven to be unstoppable when at their best this year. Despite Flynn experiencing hamstring tightness late in the preliminary final win over Banyule, he has been confirmed as a certain starter and could be the most important player on the ground if he can provide Lower Plenty’s midfielder with first service at stoppages. Keys has shared his time between the midfield and forward line this year, but still leads the club’s goal kicking with 37 majors. He was magnificent with his aerial and contested work in the preliminary final win and a similar performance this week could guide his side to victory. Tom Blake gives coach Ben Turner plenty of options given his ability to play in so many different roles. The 2016 Coaches MVP has booted 31 goals this year, but can also spend time in the ruck and, as demonstrated last week, get the job done in defence. Whichever way you look at it, the 2018 A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 Grand Final looms as an exciting battle. Eltham enters the favourite, having dropped just two games this year, but Lower Plenty’s best football is capable of pushing it back into the NFNL top flight. LIVE STREAM: A live stream of the A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 Grand Final can be viewed on the Northern Football Netball League Facebook page, while a broadcast can be heard on 88.6 Plenty Valley FM. DOWNLOAD: A high-definition digital download of the grand final can be purchased at www.nfnl.sportscastcloud. com.au seven days after the game for $22.00. WWW. NFNL. ORG. AU

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 – GRAND FINAL Grand Final Day. What we have been working towards all year. Good luck to all players selected to represent the Panthers today and to the under-19s for tomorrow’s preliminary. TONIGHT: Tonight, after the games everyone please head back to Eltham. The bar will be open and food will be available. TOMORROW: Tomorrow after the under-19s the club will again be open at 12. BBQ lunch and dinner available. A last hoorah to the old change rooms prior to demolition, live music from 2pm with the Leah Carter Trio. Everyone is welcome back to the rooms to celebrate the season regardless of result. COMMITTEE: As the unknown supporter I would like to pass on thanks to a few people. To the President and all Committee for their work this year. At times a thankless and time-consuming role, a Club is nothing without a dedicated, passionate Committee. VOLUNTEERS: To all other helpers that gave time from all the cooks on a Thursday who worked tirelessly to feed up to 100 people. What a huge and really

LOWER PLENTY The club is very excited to have both seniors and

under-19s running out in grand finals this Saturday in what is set to be a massive day for the footy club. THIS WEEK: The under-19s are looking to make it back-to-back flags as they take on Heidelberg while the seniors are set to do battle with Eltham for a shot at promotion back to the top flight. The reserves were sadly eliminated last week going down to a stronger Diamond Creek out at Epping. UNDER-19: Doggy has done an amazing job this year with the Cubs, stepping up to the plate and taking on the big task of coaching the youngest Bears. With a heap of new faces, Doggy showed no mercy getting the kids doing those extras and making sure the group was hardened ready for finals footy. Finishing the season with a 14-2 record, the Cubs finished a couple of games clear on top. Without being super slick in the second semi final two weeks ago, the Cubs were able to hold off a fast finishing Banyule to win their way directly into the Big Dance. Kwaaaayn, Juy and Hammer have been fantastic all year, while Fitzy has been a massive plus in the second half of the year following a long injury lay off. Been the dominant side

28

appreciated effort, to anyone that has emptied a bin or helped clean up post game. It takes a huge amount of time and effort to make a machine like a football club run and it could not be done without you. COACHES AND SUPPORT STAFF: To all the coaches, team managers, runners, water boys and umpire escorts and anyone that helped put the team on the park we would not be here today in a few Grand Finals without your dedication. SPONSORS: To all Eltham’s sponsors, we could not survive without your generosity and support. We aim to make sponsorship a mutual benefit so please contact the Club at any stage if you have any suggestions on how we can improve our support to you. SUPPORTERS: A huge thanks to all supporters that follow the Club all season. Always the best supported Club around the players gain a little on field with your support. Good luck again to all. GO THE PANTHER!

all year and a flag will be the cream on top. SENIORS: Have taken the long way to get to the grand final, firstly going down to Eltham in the second semi final in disgusting conditions a fortnight ago, before knocking off the in-form Banyule last week to progress to this week’s GF. With a record of 13-5, the seniors have had another great year on and off the field. Flynny has had another massive season for u,s while the two Tommys have also been excellent. Darcy hasn’t missed a beat following a delayed start to the year, with solid contributions most weeks from the likes of Ducky, Lofty and Sacco has helped steady the ship. The emergence of our youngster has been the real highlight though with Sleepy, Patto and Al Alderton all having a big say in where we are today. Finishing second is a great result for the club and the big boys absolutely deserve their spot in the final game for the year. TONIGHT: Following the grand finals we invite all LPFC supporters past and present back to the club rooms to celebrate what has been a very successful year for the club. PRESENTATION NIGHT: Is on Thursday September 27 at the club rooms. Payments can be made via TeamApp or at the bar. Tickets $75 and under-19s $60.

NETBALL NEWS - SECTION 1 GRAND FINAL DIAMOND CREEK 1 vs NORTH HEIDELBERG 1

by Stephanie Smarrelli

North Heidelberg gave Diamond Creek a run for their money, however, the Creekers fought on to win their ninth Section 1 premiership in a row. With both teams fairly well matched across the court, the stage was set for a thriller. In particular, both teams had strong shooters with Diamond Creek’s GA Stacey Gannon and North Heidelberg’s GS Rebecca Colwell both confident under the ring. They ended the game with 39 goals each. The match was tight from the first whistle. However, the Creekers settled the quickest scoring from North Heidelberg’s errors to establish a four-goal lead. North Heidelberg found themselves with the centre pass heading into the second quarter. They struggled to move the ball into the circle but once they did Colwell and GA Ellen Close were composed under the ring with an 18-goal quarter. Bulldogs GD Lauren Byrnes combined well with GK Chloe Meulenmeesters to intercept and deflect every ball they could reach. North Heidelberg challenged the eight-times reigning premiers and with only five minutes remaining in the first half, Bulldogs’ C Kate Butler intercepted the ball and the teams finally drew level. Sensing North Heidelberg about to steal the lead, Diamond Creek GK Verhonda Smith stepped up and took a crucial intercept, preventing the Bulldogs from hitting the lead. As both sides became more and more desperate to turn the ball over North Heidelberg’s Meulenmeesters received a caution. However, that didn’t stop her from applying great pressure over Diamond Creek’s goal attempts. Getting herself in front of her opponents, Meulenmeesters rebounded a missed goal from the Creekers in the last few minutes of the quarter and sent the ball soaring down the other end. Close scored and with the centre pass in their favour Colwell scored the lead changing goal. Diamond Creek were shaken mistakes and an errant pass resulting in the Creekers trailing by three goals at half time. The Creekers came out fast at the start of the third quarter after a close encounter between Colwell and Smith in defence saw contact called against the Bulldogs’ shooter. The ball transitioned from defence into attack quickly and Diamond Creek GA Stacey Gannon scored the first of what would be a 20-goal quarter for her team, with 15 of those goals her own. 38

The Bulldogs’ then turned over the next passage of play with good movement from WD Kristie Parks and WA Emma Williamson making the transition easy, however, Diamond Creek’s Smith spoiled the Bulldogs’ efforts again. Scores grew closer and then a smart deflection from C Chloe Lambert turned the game around for Diamond Creek as they drew level from the gain. A calculated long bomb from Gannon on the following centre pass then saw Diamond Creek steal back the lead. North Heidelberg continued to push the Creekers with WD K Parks coming off her direct opponent and intercepting the ball, before sending it quickly towards the goal circle for another Bulldogs’ goal. Diamond Creek put pressure over every one of North Heidelberg’s passes into the goal circle off the next centre pass, however, the Bulldogs’ remained calm and Colwell scored with the lead changing once again only a couple of minutes after they’d lost it. A contact call against Bulldogs C Stacey Parks saw the Creekers draw even again and then Gannon scored with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter to put them ahead once again. A strong finish to the quarter gave Diamond Creek a three-goal lead at the last break. The Bulldogs were able to draw level again in the opening minutes of the final quarter, however, they weren’t able to break Diamond Creek’s control of the ball. A nervous attempt at a goal missed for the Bulldogs and was then followed by a persistent contact call against WD K Parks, which allowed Diamond Creek to escape some heat as they secured another few goals. North Heidelberg seemed to tire after an extremely competitive 52 minutes of play, as mistakes crept into the Bulldogs game. Diamond Creek powered home from there with Smith picking off North Heidelberg’s passes into their attacking third and Gannon and GS Kelly Sadowy combining for another big quarter in the goal circle. In the final few minutes of play, despite falling too far behind to come back, the Bulldogs continued to push themselves in defence. However, the Creekers were too accurate with their passing and shooting to lessen the damage by much. An intercept from Diamond Creek GD Georgia Bowkett in the final ten seconds capped off a good game for her in defence, as she sent the ball flying down the court and Sadowy shot the final goal, making the winning margin ten goals. The best on court medal went to Diamond Creek’s Stacey Gannon. FINAL: Diamond Creek 1 (64) def North Heidelberg 1 (54)

NETBALL NEWS - SECTION 2 GRAND FINAL DIAMOND CREEK 2 vs IVANHOE 1

by Stephanie Smarrelli

Diamond Creek 2 came from behind to secure a six-

goal win over Ivanhoe in the Section 2 grand final at Parade College.

The teams were fairly even early before a few mistakes from Diamond Creek allowed Ivanhoe shooters GS Aysha Blade and GA Leanna Sartori to shoot their team out to a six-goal lead by the end of the first quarter. Despite Ivanhoe maintaining their lead throughout the second, the Creekers continued to play the game at their own pace, getting the basics right to ensure they continued to score through GS Mollie Rose Marchbank and GA Chloe Gray, who were shooting confidently. Scores grew close with Ivanhoe’s lead being trimmed down to just two as Diamond Creek increased their efforts in defence and began to read the feeds into the goal circle. However, Ivanhoe were again able to push their lead out to five goals at half time. Diamond Creek sparked in the third quarter as it became crucial for them to get the ball back. Creekers GD Simone Turner worked well with GK Melissa Whitten to confuse the space in Ivanhoe’s goal circle and back each other up when they tried to intercept and deflect the ball.

the court. The quarter ended with Diamond Creek in the lead by four goals. Ivanhoe started the final quarter with the centre pass in their favour and quickly scored before a pass thrown under pressure resulted in the ball going out on Diamond Creek’s centre. Ivanhoe then scored to bring the margin back to a two-goal difference. Diamond Creek, spurred on by the loud crowd, tightened up their defence and applied pressure over every Ivanhoe pass, forcing them to rush their passes. The Creekers confused the space, time and time again in Ivanhoe’s shooting circle causing more opportunities to turn over the ball.

The efforts from Turner and Whitten in defence paired with sharp shooting from Marchbank is what turned the game around for Diamond Creek as the Creekers kept Ivanhoe to just a five-goal quarter and scored 14 themselves.

The pressure continued to get the better of Ivanhoe, while Diamond Creek thrived with good feeds from WA Kristie Gannon and C Cassie Lewis making the task easy for their shooters.

Ivanhoe was beginning to feel the pressure from Diamond Creek, who drew closer and closer in scores.

As the quarter wound down Diamond Creek turned ball after ball over and capitalised on Ivanhoe’s mistakes to win the game by six-goals.

With about four minutes left in the third term, Diamond Creek drew level with their opponents and snatched the lead after Whitten rebounded a missed goal and Marchbank slotted it in down their end of

NETBALL NEWS - SECTION 3 GRAND FINAL BUNDOORA 1 vs WATSONIA 1

by Marisa Sopcic

After sitting in the top two spots all season Bundoora 1 and Watsonia 1 came head to head in the Section 3 Grand Final at Parade College.

Watsonia had a big task at hand on Friday night, coming up against the Comets after losing to them in the semi-final just a fortnight earlier. Bundoora GA Emily Williams scored the first three goals for her side, with the Comets shooters having scored five goals already in the opening quarter before Watsonia could make its first. Comets defenders Narelle Draper and Hollie Wilson kept tight pressure around the circle and forced many turnovers of the ball. Watsonia had a slow start to the game and were feeling the pressure early on from their red-hot opponents. By the quarter time break Bundoora led by 11, with the scoreboard reading 14-3. Bundoora continued with its dominant form early in the second term and moved forward quickly on their centre passes to settle into the goal circle. Watsonia was unable to create clean play when it was in possession and turned over the ball regularly, while also being unable to stop the Comets from rebounding when shots were missed. When the Saints were able to push inside their goal circle, they had an in-form Comets defence to try to

40

overcome. Bundoora extended out to an 18-goal lead at half time and headed into the third quarter with the scores at 27-9. Coming on court after the half time break, Watsonia set up for their best quarter in the match third term. They held Bundoora to just five goals in the third quarter – their lowest tally of any term all game. Watsonia fed the ball down many times, racking up seven goals, which was their highest scoring quarter for the match. Watsonia proved competitive and demonstrated why they were a top side in the competition, however they could have drawn even closer by three quarter time had they been more accurate with their shooting. Leading 32-16 at the last break, Bundoora effectively had sealed the grand final by three quarter time. The Comets were able to get the match back on their terms in the final term, when they put through eight goals to four to stretch the final margin back out to 20. Best on court for the match went to Bundoora GA Emily Williams, whose outstanding form early in the game set the tone for the Comets and gave them the fast start that propelled them to victory. Watsonia GS Georgia Cornell worked hard around the shooting circle, scoring over half of Watsonia’s goals in the game. FINAL: Bundoora 1 (40) def Watsonia 1 (20)

NETBALL NEWS - SECTION 4 GRAND FINAL ST MARY’S 2 vs GREENSBOROUGH 3

by Marisa Sopcic

Greensborough 3 completed a dream finals series to take out the Section 4 premiership with a six-goal win over St Mary’s. The Boro finished the regular season in fourth-place and won three-consecutive finals to win the flag. Greensborough had a strong presence on court throughout the grand final, as they held back St Mary’s until the very end to claim the victory. Greensborough took the lead early on, scoring three unanswered goals in the opening minutes of the match. Boro GS Mia Sannholm’s long reach allowing her to be fed lobs close to the post and get first hands on the rebounds when shots were missed. St Mary’s weren’t as quick to feed the ball into their shooters, with the Boro not allowing their opponent in fast play in transition. At quarter time the scoreboard read 12-5 Greensborough’s way, with St Mary’s needing to use the short break to recompose and work their way back into the game. However, Greensborough was on the hunt again early in the second and shut down the centre third and forced a held ball. The Boro were not giving St Mary’s any options on court to pass out to. St Mary’s shooters Romy Dodd-Stephens and Ciara Hanlon were crowded within the goal third with no room to move due to Greensborough’s tight defence.

Greensborough racked up a lot of turnovers and brought the margin out to a 10-goal difference during the second term. With their back to the wall, St Mary’s picked up the pace with some impressive attacking play. The Burra were able to tighten scores back to a six-goal margin at half-time, demonstrating a stronger style of play ahead of the second half. St. Mary’s got to within four goals of Greensborough during the third term by ramping up the pressure down the court. With St Mary’s making their charge, Greensborough was good enough to remain composed and managed to stay ahead by five goals heading into the final quarter. The start of the fourth quarter was a tense affair, with both sides throwing everything at the contest. St Mary’s called time midway through the quarter to switch up their line-up, with WD Caitlin Pilati switched into C for Niamh Pilatti. Greensborough’s long passes down court almost caused them strife at time during last term, with St Mary’s able to pick off a few passes and sit within four goals with minutes still left in the game. However, the Boro were once again able to keep calm in the gripping late stages and convert some clutch goals to finish with a six-goal win. Best on court was awarded to Greensborough GS Mia Sannholm. FINAL: Greensborough 3 (37) def St Mary’s 2 (31)
