EDITORIAL Welcome to all players, officials and supporters to season 2017. It’s time to kick off possibly the most exciting season in NFL history. Season 2017 has seen unprecedented growth in the number of teams participating in the NFL. • Senior mens teams (seniors and reserves) are at an all time high of 54 teams • Junior boys teams are at a record number - 218 teams • Junior girls teams have exploded from 31 to 50 teams • We have experience an increase of 58 football teams, from 298 to 356 • Netball teams have also reached a record 81 teams • The inaugural NFL Womens League will field 20 teams over two divisions • In 2017 a total of 431 teams will compete, an increase of 56 new teams from last year This is clearly the greatest single year of participation growth ever. Well done and thank you to everyone involved with all NFL clubs for your outstanding contribution to growing the game.

NEW CLUBS A special welcome to Kilmore Junior Football Club who have followed their senior counterparts across to the NFL after transferring from the RDFNL last year. The club will field nine junior teams and I wish them a long and prosperous future in the NFL. Laurimar Football Club will field a senior and reserves side for the very first time. I wish them well today as

they tackle the former newest senior club, Kilmore. Well done to everyone involved at Laurimar for the hard work they have put in over the last 12 months to start up their senior arm of the club. I am sure everyone at Laurimar will be very excited today as history is created. Last year we lost Reservoir Football Club for season 2016 and they are now back with a vengeance after a very tough 12 months. We well done to everyone at the club for their commitment and perseverance to get the club back up and running again. Today they take on Banyule at home and I wish them well. The off-season has been extremely busy and club level and I am sure everyone is excited about Round 1 to see how their team performs. The hype and speculation over summer of who has recruited better than others will finally be revealed. I would like thank the Heidelberg Golf Club for continuing their support as an NFL partner.

NFLW On the back of the inaugural AFLW season, the NFLW season also kicks off today with a standalone season opener between the West Preston-Lakeside and Whitehorse Colts. This will be played after the West Preston-Lakeside v Heidelberg senior match, commencing at 4:15pm. If you are in the area, pop in and support both sides in the very first Northpark NFLW match. The season proper will commence on Sunday April 23. Good luck to all teams for the upcoming season, I hope you all enjoy participating in the NFL and I am looking forward to another exciting year of NFL football and netball. See you at the footy. NFL News POWER SWITCHED ON

by Mick Mattingly

Inaugural Laurimar Power senior coach Wayne Sharkie

says a strong pre-season has filled him with confidence ahead of the club’s first match against Kilmore on April 1. “It’s been really upbeat, fantastic numbers, really good enthusiasm. Everyone’s just chomping at the bit to get into it,” Sharkie told The Northerner. The newcomers of the Northern Football League’s senior competition, who will begin their journey in Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 this weekend, have had a wave of player interest since the announcement last year that the Power would be expanding their junior club. Sharkie insisted the Power has had no trouble acquiring talent from around the region, despite having no prior form to advertise. “Even before I was appointed they had a list of around 60 blokes who had emailed or rang the club to say they were interested,” he said. “At our meet the coach meeting in October we had 45 turn up and then we had 60 on the track our first night.” Sharkie said having such strong training numbers and some timely assistance has helped him transition from senior assistant coaching roles into the senior position at Laurimar.

Among his previous coaching roles have been assistant positions at Montmorency and Eastern Football League powerhouse Balwyn. “It’s been what I always wanted to do, but not anything that I didn’t expect,” he said. “I’ve been lucky because I’ve worked with some senior coaches that have given me a lot of rope. “So I haven’t found it that different, and I’ve got some really good assistants that I can delegate to.” One of those assistant coaches will be former Glenroy star and dual club best and fairest winner Adam Dennis. Dennis has formally been an Essendon District Football League Division 1 Team of the Year member, and his addition to the Power looks to be one of the coups of the off-season. He, along with recruits Jacson Cecil (Old Ivanhoe) and Damian Pywell (Kinglake) have been the players to most impress Sharkie on the training park during the club’s inaugural pre-season training program. Laurimar tested itself ahead of its Northern Football League debut with practice matches against Western Region Football League outfit Wyndham Suns and reigning NFL Division 3 premier Watsonia. Tune in to 88.6 Plenty Valley FM from 2pm Saturday to hear a live broadcast of Laurimar’s debut senior match against Kilmore from Laurimar Reserve.

NFL News MUSTANGS EMBRACING THE CHALLENGE

by Samuel Zito

Reservoir coach Aaron Collins says his side’s main

objective is to simply be competitive in its return to the field this season. A player shortage forced Reservoir into recess this season after taking out the 2015 Division 3 premiership – its first senior flag since 1984. In November the Mustangs were given the green light to return to the field this season, following months of hard work behind the scenes. They will be joined in Heidelberg Golf Division 3 by newcomer Laurimar, making for a nine-team competition. With as many as 40 players already registered as early as December and solid numbers turning out for preseason training, Collins said excitement was building at Crispe Park. “It’s definitely exciting now. A lot of hard work has gone into it,” Collins told The Northerner. “It was a lot harder than what we thought. “We are very lucky that we’ve got good numbers now. It’s now about building the depth.”“We’re just trying to be competitive then we will build on that.” Collins is not one to shy away from a challenge. In his previous coaching role at Jacana he guided the perennial battlers to the 2015 Division 2 grand final after a 15-year finals drought. He signed on as Reservoir coach in August with no guarantee of what the future held for the Mustangs. Collins said the challenge of getting a proud club back to the field appealed to him and assistant coach Nathan Brundell. “We both love a challenge and both thought that this was something we could do,” he said. “Nathan’s from the Northern Football League and has played a fair bit of footy there so we took the challenge on.” Together they have signed several members from the 2015 premiership team, including skipper and 2010 competition best and fairest Ryan Docherty, David McGregor and Kent Beaumont. But despite the return of some of the club’s premiership players, Collins warned expectations should be kept low in 2017. 4

THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football League Record

“We’re trying to put together a group of players who have never met each other,” he said. “You’ve got your small groups of three or four who have come with each other, but we’re trying to get a group of blokes to gel to form a senior side. “That’s going to be the hardest part.” McGregor and Beaumont are likely to form a one-two punch up forward, while Collins expects recruits Ben Noy (Hill End) and Josh Alexander (Lara) to add quality to the club’s midfield. As the playing squad assembled, Collins said he had hoped to create an enjoyable environment on the training track. “Before Christmas it’s more about having fun and just getting to know the blokes,” he said. “We (wanted) it to be light-hearted and enjoyable so that we can get to know everybody. “After Christmas we will be working on our structures and game plan and the boys look forward to that part of it.” Reservoir has prepared for the 2017 season with practice matches against Roxburgh Park, Richmond Central and Moonee Valley.

NFL News RAMSAY NAMED REPRESENTATIVE COACH Garry Ramsay will coach the Northern Football League

senior representative team at the 2017 AFL Victoria Community Championships.

A two-time NFL premiership coach, Ramsay led Macleod to the 2015 Division 1 flag and Lower Plenty to the Division 2 premiership in 2011. Ramsay said he was excited to be at the helm for the NFL’s clash against the Western Region Football League on Saturday May 13. “I’ve spent my whole life in the Northern Football League so I’m very passionate about it,” Ramsay said. “It’s a lot easier to coach and lead people when you’re passionate about what you are playing for. “We’re playing for the Northern Football League and I’d like to think I will put a lot of time in and take this serious.” It will be Ramsay’s first foray into senior representative football, although he has previously coached junior interleague teams at under-15, under-16 and under-17 levels. Despite his outstanding coaching record, Ramsay said he was surprised when first approached about the representative position. “I hadn’t even thought about it to be honest. But when the opportunity came up I jumped at it,” he said. “It will be a great opportunity.” Ramsay will be assisted by Trevor Robinson, Brett Jeffery and Jono Manzoney – all of whom are well regarded within the NFL. Robinson was named captain of Bundoora’s Team of the Century and helped steer the Bulls to back-to-back Division 1 premierships in 1995 and 1996. Jeffery claimed the competition best and fairest in 2006 and captained Northcote Park, while Manzoney coached Hurstbridge in 2013 and 2014 and played a major role in developing the young side that went on to win last year’s Division 2 flag. Ramsay and his coaching panel have been working feverishly to announce the playing squad, with an announcement to be made shortly. “We endeavour to make contact with the individual players before we announce the squad,” he said. “When we do announce the squad players will have

already been contacted and will have confirmed their level of commitment. We won’t be just naming a player and not know whether they want to play or not. “Part of the plan to ring players before we announce the squad, to make sure they’re interested, (is to) name a smaller squad because it’s easier to add players than subtract them. “For the players who fire in the first few rounds, there will still be an opportunity to be added, rather than name too big a squad and limit ourselves to that squad.” Ramsay urged all clubs to support the representative program as the NFL looks to get back to winning ways following a 30-point loss to the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League last year. He takes the reins from Robert Hyde who relinquished the position to focus on his return as senior coach at Greensborough. While there has been a change to the NFL’s senior coach, the league’s under-19 representative team will again be led by Rod Cann. Cann, a three-time under-19 premiership coach with Greensborough, successfully led the NFL to an 85-point win over the MPNFL last year. “Once again I’m looking forward to it, particularly against a different opposition and with a different group of players,” Cann said. “It’s an exciting time for the players and it’s a great opportunity for them to put their hand up. “Some of the group of players selected last year just goes to show what they can do beyond that game with the experience they picked up from the opportunity of playing at a higher level.”

NFL News ROOSTERS PREPARING FOR RESET

by Dan Campbell

West Preston-Lakeside looks set to embark on a new era under new senior coach Rob Maiorana.

Maiorana is no stranger to J.E Moore Park. A premiership player with the Roosters in 2003, he is also a three-time best and fairest winner in 1999, 2000 and 2004. Speaking to The Northerner, Mairona said he was excited to return to his former club to lead the West PrestonLakeside charge in 2017. “I’m pretty proud and excited to get back there,” Maiorana said. “It’s a good club with good people and I’m looking to bring some success back to the club. “There’s a lot of work to do, but I’m pretty excited by the challenge.” Maiorana returns after previously serving at the club as a playing assistant-coach, before further building his coaching CV within the VFL and AFL. His roles have included midfield coach of the VFL state representative team in 2010, assisting Brett Ratten in the coaches box at Carlton in 2011-12, Northern Blues assistant coach from 2008-11, and Northern Blues senior assistant coach from 2012-2016. Names to have mentored Maiorana include Leigh Matthews, Mark Williams, Denis Pagan, David Parkin, Brett Ratten, Rob Wiley, Neil Craig, Gavin Brown, Alan Richardson and Brendon Bolton. “I’ve just been fortunate to work for and with some great coaches and people over a long period of time,” Maiorana said. “Some of the greatest coaching influences with the modern game are (names) such as David Teague, Josh Fraser and Darren Harris who have been great mentors. “I’m a real student of the game and I’ve been fortunate to be able to pick their brains and contribute to their programs. “But at the end of the day, I have to put my style and 6

THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football League Record

stamp on this side.” As the game continues to evolve, so does coaching, according to Maiorana as he looks to create a learning environment at J.E Moore Park. “Footy’s changed a lot. I think the next generation of young people are a little bit different to the older generation – you need to treat them a little bit differently,” he said. “There’s a lot more education involved in football these days. I’m going to try and create a learning environment that’s for sure and little bits of each of those people will come with me I think.” Maiorana believes interpersonal skills are an integral part of coaching in the modern game. “One of the first things I did when I was appointed was I tried to phone each and every one of the senior players on the list to introduce myself,” he said. Having missed the finals for the past four seasons, 2017 looms a year of improvement for the Roosters. Over the summer months the club has signed two-time Geelong premiership player Mathew Stokes, Carlton high-flyer Andrew Walker and last year’s VFL leading goal kicker Ahmed Saad. Emerging youngster Jackson Clarke has returned to J.E. Moore Park and will play for the Roosters when made available from Coburg’s VFL team, while Patrick Karnezis has stayed put after an impressive debut season for the club. As the club looks set for better results on the field, Maiorana stressed the importance of improvement offfield to set the path for sustained success. “The main objective will be to improve on last year,” he said. “There’s no big statements of making finals and grand finals – it’s a little bit of a reset around the place to make sure that we’re improving the culture, the leadership, the standards, professionalism and we’re hoping that with that, the footy results will take care of themselves. “That may take a little while to set in, but certainly to improve on last year and set the platform for sustainable success moving forward.”

NFL News TIGERS HUNGRY FOR MORE by Samuel Zito

The prospect of becoming the first Division 1 premier in eight years to defend its title was a driving force for Heidelberg during its pre-season campaign.

Not since the Tigers won four consecutive premierships from 2006 to 2009 has an NFL side managed to win back-to-back senior premierships. After last year breaking a seven-year premiership drought, Heidelberg co-coach Charles Gaylard said his playing group was striving to create more history during the 2017 season. “It’s extremely hard to go back-to-back as we’ve seen over the past seven to eight years,” Gaylard told The Northerner. “We’re definitely putting in the hard yards and we really want to achieve that this year. It’s going to be highly competitive though. “We always have a strong focus on our fitness, but we also want everyone to touch the football as much as possible. You can always get better at increasing the skill level of the team. “We’re looking at ways to score a bit heavier as well. We’re putting that into practice during pre-season.” Heidelberg’s bid to emulate its 2016 success has been assisted by the addition of former Hawthorn and Essendon forward Sam Grimley and Shepparton United midfielder Shaun Huy. 2015 best and fairest winner Michael Looby and Jake Truefeldt have returned from overseas trips, while Lachlan Wilson – who was best afield in the grand final in just his fourth senior game – will spend more time with the Tigers as he juggles school football and year 12 studies. Gaylard said he had been impressed by Grimley’s dedication during pre-season and expected the big man to play a key role in the forward line this year. Drafted with pick No.39 in the 2009 AFL National Draft, Grimley played three games for the Hawks in six seasons, before adding another four with the Bombers last year. He was the VFL leading goal kicker in consecutive seasons in 2014 and 2015, booting 45 and 46 goals respectively. “He’s really agile for someone his size and he looks like being a really good addition to our team. He’s fitted in extremely well,” Gaylard said. “We’ve seen his track

record playing up forward so that will likely be where we play him throughout the year. “There might be times when he pinch-hits in the ruck but it would be nice to get him working in tandem with a couple of the other guys up forward. “We might then be able to play DC (Dan Connors) in the midfield a little bit.” After a dream start to his coaching career, Gaylard said he was again looking forward to working closely with mentor Jason Heatley this season. Heidelberg announced in December that Heatley had been promoted to co-coach after last year serving as Gaylard’s senior assistant. Despite the change in title, Gaylard expected little change in the way the coaches operate this year. “It’s great that he’s come on as co-coach and we’ll have equal responsibility,” he said. “We worked well together last year so I don’t think a whole lot will change with the way that we work together.” Echoing the words of his co-coach, Heatley said he was excited about the opportunity to again work closely with Gaylard. Heatley confirmed the Tigers would be without premiership duo Jarrod and Luke Hodgkin, while star ruckman Sam Gilmore will be away until the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Jarrod, a two-time NFL representative player, has been approved a move to Wodonga, while Luke will play with EDFL Division 1 outfit Taylors Lakes. Heatley said the challenge was now on Heidelberg’s next tier to cement their place in the senior line-up. “Guys like Jake McNamara, Chaz Sargeant, Dan Cookson all these guys should be ripping the door down to play week in, week out senior footy,” Heatley said. Heidelberg begins its premiership defence with a clash against the new-look West Preston-Lakeside at J.E Moore Park this week. It looms as a blockbuster match following a fruitful off-season for the Roosters, which has seen them sign former AFL players Mathew Stokes, Andrew Walker and Ahmed Saad. “It’s a great promotion for the league and we’re always happy to be part of those standalone games. Anything we can do to showcase our footy club and the league can only be a positive,” Heatley said.

NFL News NFLW SET TO LAUNCH History will be made in 2017 with the Northern

Football League welcoming senior women’s football competitions for the first time. The inaugural Northpark NFLW season will feature 20 teams playing across two divisions. Division 1 will consist of 10 teams from the former Victoria Women’s Football League. They include Bendigo Thunder, Darebin, Deer Park, Diamond Creek Women’s, Kew, La Trobe Uni, Melbourne Uni, Pascoe Vale, VU Western Spurs and Whitehorse. Division 2 will also consist of 10 teams, made up of second teams from Division 1 clubs, along with teams formed from existing Northern Football League clubs. The Division 2 competition will include Darebin 2, Diamond Creek Women’s 2, Kew 2, La Trobe Uni 2, Laurimar, Montmorency, South Morang, VU Western Spurs 2, West Preston-Lakeside and Whitehorse 2. NFL chief executive Peter McDougall said the establishment of the Northpark NFLW competition was a natural progression for the league after managing junior girls football competitions for the past decade. “The introduction of the NFL women’s competitions is a natural progression after re-structuring our junior competitions in 2016,” McDougall said. “As well as managing the senior women’s competition, the NFL will also conduct an under-10 girls competition along with the existing under-12, under-14, under-16 and under-18 competitions. “This structure will allow females, like males, to play football with one club from Auskick right through to seniors.” Northpark NFLW matches will be played primarily on Sunday afternoons, although McDougall said exceptions would be made for Women’s VFL aligned clubs who requested curtain raisers. “Four of the state league’s second teams that will play in our Division 1 competition,” McDougall said. 8

THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football League Record

“We’re almost the reserves competition for the state league, to some degree.” Division 1 matches will feature 18 players per side, two more than the AFL Women’s competition. However, flexibility will be given to teams in Division 2. “It will become 18 a side if both teams have got enough players,” McDougall said. “If they don’t we are applying one of our junior rules where there will be evening-up rule. “If one team has only got 16, then the other has to play with 16. Or if they have got extras, they might lend them a couple.” The first match of the Northpark NFLW competition will be played this Saturday when West Preston-Lakeside hosts Whitehorse 2 at J.E. Moore Park. The Division 2 match will commence at 4:15pm following the Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 men’s clash between West Preston-Lakeside and reigning premier Heidelberg. All remaining NFLW Round 1 matches will be played on the weekend of April 22-23. Ahead of those matches, the NFL will host a luncheon at Heidelberg Golf Club on Friday April 21 to launch the NFLW competition. The luncheon will feature a host of AFLW players, along with three-time Brisbane Lions premiership player Simon Black. To purchase tickets to the NFLW Luncheon, please call the NFL office on 9435 8228.

NFL News THREE IN RUNNING FOR AFLW RISING STAR Three former Northern Football League juniors are in

the running for the inaugural AFLW Rising Star award. Western Bulldogs’ defender Bailey Hunt, Collingwood midfielder Brittany Bonnici and Melbourne forward Deanna Berry all received nominations for the award during the seven-round home and away season. Hunt, who played three seasons with Montmorency, was nominated for the Rising Star in the opening round of the season. She collected nine disposals, laid three tackles and had two clearances in the Western Bulldogs’ 32-point victory over Fremantle at Whitten Oval. Hunt began her football career with Montmorency in 2013. The following season she was named captain of the Magpies’ under-18 girls and won the side’s best and fairest award. The following year she played senior football with the Magpies, before moving to Melbourne Uni in 2016 to play in the VFL Women’s competition. Following a strong debut season in the VFLW she was selected at pick No.60 in the 2016 NAB AFL Women’s Draft. Still relatively new to the game, Hunt said she had never previously considered becoming a professional footballer. “I always loved footy as a kid but there were no pathways. I never thought of playing football for a women’s team,” she said. “When I was at high school a few of my friends were playing and it caught my interest because I knew how to kick a footy well. I took myself along to Montmorency Junior Football Club and have loved it ever since.” Bonnici began her football career with Wallan Junior Football Club and spent four seasons with the Magpies before transferring to St Albans. She had recently taken a break from football after a string of concussions, and had played only two senior matches for St Kilda in the VFL Women’s competition before being drafted by Collingwood with pick No. 27 in the 2016 AFL Women’s draft. She won a Rising Star nomination after collecting a match-high 18 disposals in the Magpies’ six-goal win over GWS in Round 6. She also laid five tackles. Bonnici played every game this season, and felt her

effort against the Giants was her best performance. “It goes to show the amount of effort the coaches have put into us,” Bonnici told AFL.com.au. “They had a lot of faith in me and they’ve given me the opportunity to play that (style of) game. I’d like to think I did them proud. “Running is one of the strengths of my game, as well as my tackling. I like to be known as a ferocious player, and because I am little (163cm), I know I need to make my presence felt, otherwise I’ll be pushed around.” A product of the Mernda Football Club, Berry was a standout coming through the junior ranks. After playing against the boys until the under-14s, she made the move to Epping to play in the NFL’s Youth Girls competition, before returning to Mernda to start up the Demons’under-18 girls side. As a 17-year-old she led the Victorian Women’s Football League Division 2 goal kicking, booting 43 majors for Montmorency. Berry then joined Melbourne Uni in the VFL Women’s in 2016 before being selected by Melbourne at pick No. 9 in the inaugural AFL Women’s draft. She received the Round 7 Rising Star nomination after finishing with 11 disposals, two goals and three marks in the Demons’ 54-point win over Fremantle. Berry said being part of the inaugural AFLW season had been a phenomenal experience and had left her wanting more. “It has skyrocketed and no one expected it,” Berry told Leader. “It was good to see everyone get on board, really take us on board and know that we can play footy.” WWW. NORTHERN Knights News

COFFIELD NAMED KNIGHTS CAPTAIN The Northern Knights have finalised their TAC Cup squad for 2017, with Eltham’s Nicholas Coffield named club captain.

any other time I’ve been here and I’m confident the club is heading in the right direction,” Coffield said “By everyone working together on and off the field, we can again make the Knights respected off the field and feared on the field.” All players in the six-man leadership group come from NFL clubs, with Coffield to be assisted by Kye Agosta (Diamond Creek), Anthony Fable (South Morang), Joel Naylor (Whittlesea), Ethan Penrith (West PrestonLakeside) and Jamison Shea (Lower Plenty). With the squad now finalised Gieschen said he couldn’t wait for the real season to start, with Round 1 commencing last Sunday March 26 against the Western Jets at IKON Park. “The real hard work starts now and the grind of a full TAC Cup season is difficult, physically and mentally,” Gieschen said. “We hope that with the body of work they have put behind them over pre-season we are in a really good place to impact the competition strongly.”

Northern Knights’ 2017 TAC Cup squad:

The 52-man squad includes 26 players from Northern Football League clubs, while a further three played senior football with Banyule last year while also playing junior football in the YJFL. The squad comprises 27 top-age players, 21 bottomage players and four confirmed 19-year-olds. Northern Knights’ Talent Manager Rhy Gieschen says narrowing down the list to its final 52 was a tough decision. “We wanted to really extend the opportunity to give as many players as possible the chance to showcase their talents and earn a spot on the list this year,” Gieschen said. “We entered pre-season with 85 players and had to make some really tough decisions. “The group that did make the 52 were really made to earn it and should feel really proud of their accomplishments over pre-season.” A new era of the Northern Knights began with the announcement of Coffield as the club’s 2017 TAC Cup captain. “The Knights now have a more club atmosphere than 10

NORTHERN Knights News KNIGHTS GIRLS ON A MISSION Twenty-five of the Northern Football League’s best

junior female players are representing the Northern Knights in the inaugural TAC Cup Girls competition. Seven NFL clubs have a player represented in the squad, which is coached by Carlton AFLW player and former NFL junior Rebecca Privitelli The Knights fell to a 5.8 (38) to 3.2 (20) loss to Geelong Falcons in their Round 1 match on March 18. Speaking to Star Weekly, Privitelli said good results would be nice, but the program was more about developing the girls. The Knights, unlike a lot of other TAC Cup clubs, haven’t had a girls academy program in place, so have started from scratch this year. “I don’t have any expectations, besides the girls going out there to play their role and to their strengths,” Privitelli said. “We really wanted to uncover that and get our girls playing in our region and I’m really rapt to have the girls we have. “It was quite a tough selection process and I’m really impressed with our list. “The more girls we can put into this level of football the more we can develop them and the more they can take to their local club.” Privitelli singled out Marnie Jarvis, Maddy Guerin and Gabrielle Newton as players to watch. Also among the players thriving in the Knights program is inaugural captain Lily Brancatisano. Brancatisano said it had been a whirlwind 12 months since she picked up a football. “I’ve only played probably nine or 10 games of footy. I joined last year with the Laurimar Power and played a few games down there,” she told Star Weekly. Brancatisano, who has a basketball background, says she started to play football for fitness. She was playing with her sister Madeline, who is also part of the Knights, and really enjoyed it. “I’m pretty new to the sport and that’s part of the fun, learning new skills and getting a better grasp of the knowledge as I go through. That’s what it’s about at this level, still learning and developing as players and people.” The inaugural TAC Cup Girls competition will see each team play five matches, with the ladder-leader at the

end awarded the premiership. Despite the quick turnaround to create a squad for the inaugural TAC Cup Girls competition, Knights Talent Manager Rhy Gieschen said his club had taken a longterm view for their girls football program, aiming to become a target destination for future young stars. “We looked into it last year and had it in our minds to run a girls program across the season,” talent manager Rhy Gieschen told Leader. “We thought it was a good opportunity to not only have an under-18 squad, but also a development squad for girls aged 14 or 15.” A strong link with Carlton has proved beneficial, with the first five training sessions for both squads held at Ikon Park. Below is the Northern Knights’ TAC Cup Girls squad for the 2017 season: Olivia Antonello (Yarrambat), Courtney Beaton (Greensborough), Lily Brancatisano (Montmorency), Madeline Brancatisano (Laurimar), Bonnie Cantrill (Diamond Creek Women’s), Eve Capetola (Banyule), Ebony Clayton (St Mary’s), Gabby Cleeman (Parkside), Taylah Curavic (Laurimar), Alice Doyle (Ivanhoe), Lauren Durante (Diamond Creek Women’s), Keely Fitzgerald (Diamond Creek Women’s), Ciara Fitzgerald (West Preston-Lakeside), Abby Glascott (Ivanhoe), Maddy Guerin (Fitzroy), Britney Gutknecht (Laurimar), Bridgette Hallal (Darebin Falcons), Marnie Jarvis (Yarrambat), Courtney Jones-Hughes (Donvale), Paije Kearney (Laurimar), Taylah Manson (Greensborough), Charlotte Mikic (St Mary’s), Nell MorrisDalton (Fitzroy), Gabrielle Newton (Montmorency), Neve O’Connor (Diamond Creek Women’s), Ruby Panozzo (Montmorency), Lily Paterson (Laurimar), Alexandra Pronesti (Yarrambat), Natasha Reeve (Ivanhoe), Malaya Rodezno (Diamond Creek Women’s), Sarah Sansonetti (Bundoora), Bailey Schultz (Montmorency), Cameron Schultz (Montmorency), Mika Suzuki (Yarrambat), Emma Toscano (Bulleen-Templestowe), Sarah Townsend (Montmorency) and Stephanie Yoannidis (Montmorency).

THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football League Record

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview Footy is back and it is hard to imagine a better way to kick off the 2017 Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 season. Reigning premier Heidelberg starts the season with a trip to J.E Moore Park to take on a new-look West Preston-Lakeside outfit that could prove to be one of the Tigers’ biggest challengers in their bid for back-toback flags. The Roosters enter a new era under favourite son Robbie Mairoana. The former best and fairest winner and premiership player has made an immediate impact at his former club since signing on as coach in October. Over the past six months two-time Geelong premiership forward Mathew Stokes, Carlton 200-gamer Andrew Walker and former St Kilda forward and VFL leading goal kicker Ahmed Saad have all made J.E. Moore Park home. The former AFL trio join a side that already contains the likes of Patrick Karnezis, Shaun Gannon and Luke Lirosi, meaning the Roosters’ top-end talent is now as good as any in the competition. After four years without a finals appearance, the Roosters look primed to make significant strides forward in 2017. While Mairona has been quick to quash any bold finals statements, it is hard to not be excited about what the season holds for his West Preston-Lakeside side. They start the season with the ultimate test, but a win over the reigning premier in Round 1 would further confirm the Roosters’ status as a leading contender this year. Heidelberg has also enjoyed a fruitful off-season after last year breaking a seven-year premiership drought. Despite the loss of Jarrod and Luke Hodgkin, the Tigers have strengthened their list with the addition of Hawthorn and Essendon key forward Sam Grimley and Shepparton United’s Shaun Huy, and the return of 2015 best and fairest Michael Looby. The strong leadership of Charles Gaylard and Jason Heatley would not have allowed any complacency to build over the summer. The Tigers understand the difficulties recent Division 1 premiers have endured defending their crown and will be hungry to make an early statement on day one of the 2017 season. While the club’s best 22 looks stronger than last year, their depth may be tested with the loss of a number of last year’s reserves premiership team and the potential

unavailability of ruckman Sam Gilmore for the opening half of the year. However, it’s a test Heatley welcomed. “Guys like Jake McNamara, Chaz Sargeant, Dan Cookson all these guys should be ripping the door down to play week in, week out senior footy,” Heatley said. This weekend’s season-opener is a blockbuster and looms as a game that could define the 2017 season. Footy’s back and aren’t we excited!

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE Welcome to 2017, the Chinese Year of the Rooster. Let’s hope it means something.

THE CLUB: Over the spring and summer some changes have occurred with several new coaches on the panel, led by former premiership and best and fairest player Robbie Maiorana taking over the main job. We welcome his family back to the club. George Lattouf has stepped up to the reserves gig and Tehan Rafei has the under-19s gig. We wish them all the best. We welcome all our new sponsors and thanks to the old ones for sticking fat. Let’s support them and do them proud on and off the field. PRE-SEASON: It’s been busy with new recruits coming to the club but none bigger than Tommy “The Shoe” Trantino. He’s done a power of work in the off season and is set to have his best season yet. He’s been joined by Sleazy Winebars who’s gone from pinching footies at his house to player manager. I was lucky enough to have a conference call with George, George and Ali and all the big decisions were finalised. We tracked

HEIDELBERG We have had a few arrivals over the summer, offset

by a handful of blokes going to look for opportunities elsewhere. BIG INS: We welcome Sam Grimley and Shaun Huy along with up to eight open-age players who will don the Yellow and Black for the first time. We are also excited about getting 19s back on the park for 2017 thanks to a lot of hard work and effort by a lot of people. We did have a scare go through the Den with rumours persisting all summer about Roger Davis joining the impressive list of recruits at West Preston-Lakeside. Doogs, the 54 year old, sometime half-forward fill-in looked headed for the lakeside oval after taking a liking to WPLFC social functions. A glitch in the player transfer database means that he remains available to fill-in at the Den. NETBALL: The other massive ‘in’ in the off-season is netball at the Den. We’re fielding six teams in the NFL netball comp across all grades which is a fantastic addition to the club. All friends and families of our netballers, together with players, coaches and support staff are warmly welcomed.

down our first son-father recruit with Walks serving his apprenticeship under Chas coming through Auskick, Under 9s, 10s & 11s. There was only one criteria that Kylie play netball. A few others have arrived with Saady showing some promise but, like Bardo’s golf swing, he does take some time to get it down the fairway. But the big name is big Jackson Clarke who looks the goods in more ways than one. A couple of former juniors have returned with the McDonagh brothers, Adam and a couple of Tilleys are looming large. This has even excited Mongrel who wants to take this team back to tackle those GFL teams again. MEMBERSHIPS: Are now on sale and there is no better way to support your club. Starting from as little as $30, membership gets you into all the games as well as some handy benefits along the way. See Paul, Dooga or Pino to collect yours. ROUND 2: We are hosting our first function after the Hurstbridge home game at the club. Details to come. MEDIA: www.westprestonlakesidefc.com.au, Team App Twitter, Facebook and Instagram @roosterswplfc.

COACHING PANEL AND LEADERSHIP GROUP: Our 2017 coaching panel has been tweaked slightly with Jason Heatley now in a co-coaching role with Charles “Chugga” Gaylard. John Matthews and John Bourke continue as the brains trust with Simon Amore continuing as reserves coach. Vinnie Dattoli joins the coaching group with responsibility for our 19s in 2017. SOCIAL CALENDAR: On Saturday 8 April, when we’re at home to Bundoora, we will be holding the 2007 Senior and Reserves Premiership Reunion. Should be a great afternoon and most likely evening. Check out the social calendar on our sponsors page. PLAYER SPONSORSHIP: Player sponsorship is a great opportunity to become actively involved in supporting the club, whether you’ve got a favourite player to sponsor, a family member who plays or you just want to support the club and our players. Contact either Desy Luckman 0405 191 721 or Michael Peacock 0433 636 698. TODAY: What a great way to start the season with a stand-alone hit out at West Preston-Lakeside. Should be cracking game to start the season. Congratulations also to West for commencing the year with the inaugural NFL women’s game.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 HEIDELBERG WEST New season, new coach and hopefully new results. THE CLUB: We enter the 2017 season with new coach Gary Cutler. The former North Heidelberg reserves coach has brought new found excitement, but more importantly a culture built on hard work and team commitment. Gaz has had the boys training since November and they are fitter than ever. Gaz was made aware in the first interview what type of coach we were looking for. We are a no-frills club and he will not be having four assistants, statisticians, a midfield coach or any of that other crap. We need a man with a plan, who can instil belief in the players, make the hard decisions, be first to training, last leave and if need be, fill the water bottles. So far, he’s ticking all the boxes. The season is a staying race. We come in with the bottom weight and think we will run a cheeky race. COACHES: Gaz will be supported by assistant Nick Prestigiacomo and former player, now reserves coach Michael Missen.

MERNDA Welcome back for another Mernda-flavoured season of the Northern Football League. I’m damn excited for it, hopefully you guys and girls are too.

LAST YEAR: Last year was a watershed moment for the Mernda Footy Club as we settled in to our new clubrooms at Waterview Recreational Reserve. Unfortunately, however, we were unable to cap off a very good 2016 with finals football, and we learned that five just doesn’t go into four on the very last day of the home and away season when we sat inside the top four the other 17 weeks. In any instance, a big thank you must be handed out to coaches Jason Ford, Matthew Rees and Steven Musico for their efforts in getting the club back on track after a very tough 2015. Although we finished fifth in all three grades, it was a much-improved season. Unfortunately, all three are not continuing in their roles. COACHES: Into the senior hot-seat comes Steven Power. Freckle has had a vast amount of coaching experience already, and steered Epping to a Grand Final in 2015. In the reserves, we’d like to welcome twice-premiership coach Gavin Mutz to the club. 20

THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football League Record

PAST PLAYERS DAY: To all the past players who are at the game today we thank you. We are forever grateful for your support. NETBALL: One season, one premiership. Congratulations to the ladies taking out the premiership in their first season last year, which included Alanah Moore winning best in comp and Montana Powell winning the Star Shooter award. This has sparked excellent interest and growth with the club expanding to two senior teams and three junior teams. Go girls. THIS WEEK: We want the Cup. Les and Ray Butterwoth were both named in our greatest ever team of the last 80 years and when we play Mernda it is in honour of Les who played for both clubs. The Cup belongs at West, bring it with you, we want it. ROUND 1 PLAYER TO WATCH: #4 Paul Brown – Gained instant respect within the club with his hard ball wins and quick hands.

Mutzy took Thomastown to the last two Division 2 reserves premierships, so he has a lot of experience in getting the right results at this grade. Finally, Brad Peirce has stepped up to become our under-19s coach. Meantime, in the netball, Emma Pacconi has taken over from Kezia Hallam to become our netball coordinator. Undoubtedly, everyone I’ve named above has worked their backsides off to give our club the best platform for the season ahead. WELCOME: I’d also like to take the time to welcome our new recruits and their families. It’s been pleasing to see all our recruits fitting in seamlessly into our setup, and we hope you have a great year ahead. TODAY: Our first game today is against Heidelberg West, who has recruited pretty well, so it’s fair to expect a much-improved showing from their one-win season in 2016. We have to be on our game to make sure that we start our season on the right note. TONIGHT: A band night will be held at the clubrooms post-game, so make sure you’re all in attendance as we look to kick off the season with a bang.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 LAURIMAR There are a lot of things to like about the Power this

year as we continue to grow, but in particular we’re very excited about the introduction of our senior men and women’s teams and can’t wait for them to get into the real stuff to test our expectations. SPONSORS: We’ve re-signed some of our amazing long term sponsors and in particular we’d like to acknowledge Morrison Kleeman who have supported us from day one and were the first to put their hand up to be more involved with senior football. We welcome the Bridge Inn Hotel and Bayford Ford into our family and Slumberest have also stepped up; as have many of our other sponsors for which we are extremely grateful and who we’ll get behind and continue to support and look to repay their investment. THE CLUB: The build-up to the Power’s first ever season of senior football has our local community buzzing. If the sizeable crowds attending the two home practice matches to date are any indication then we’re off to a great start. From the initial meeting where over 40 potential players turned up to meet coach Wayne

KILMORE It’s been a busy off season with both the football and

netball selecting new senior coaches for 2017.

THE CLUB: Congratulations to Nathan Phillips as the senior football coach and Sam George as the senior netball coach. Congratulations to Sam and the Kilmore 1 girls taking out the Section 5 premiership in their first year in the competition. The club welcomes Ben Vincent on board as the reserves coach and would also like to recognise the efforts of Dave ‘Pugs’ Milne who stands down as President, after several years of hard work and guiding the club into the NFL. FOOTBALL: Nathan Phillips has worked extremely hard since his appointment, putting together a competitive list and having them well drilled and fit for the 2017 season. After seeing the host of new recruits and talented young locals in action during the practice matches, I believe the senior footballers will be highly competitive this year. We welcome big Brad Kite to the club along with Leigh Irons, Wade Zolnierczyk, Matt Bulluss, Billy McKeown, Luke Chapman and Lachlan Gough. 28

THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football League Record

Sharkie in October, the club has seen over 100 potential players training over the pre-season. The inaugural list contains a mix of both novice and veteran players that the club is confident will represent us with pride and passion. Whilst we’re looking to be competitive in every game, the main aim will be to bring a style of football that will see us rise through the ranks. However, the club acknowledges that players getting used to playing together and gelling the two sides is its focus in the early part of the season. PLAYING LIST: Amongst a 70 strong list of players, those to watch in the early weeks include former Glenroy B&F and new assistant coach Adam Dennis, ex Kinglake ball magnet Damian Pywell, and young speedster Joel McDonald who transfers in from Whittlesea. TODAY: The Power welcomes Kilmore to the Powerhouse for a much anticipated Round 1 clash where both clubs will be looking to get their seasons off to the best possible start. To all our members, and the broader football community, welcome to season 2017 and good luck to all.

UNDER-19: On a disappointing note, the club was unable to field an under-19 team this season. Although a lot of hard work was put in by Tom Snaith, it is apparent that attracting young men to play football these days is a tough challenge. It’s not just a problem that Kilmore faces, with work and other interests taking young players away from the game. We are excited to have the Kilmore Junior Football Club join us in the NFL, but for this year it has impacted on our under-19s, as the junior club now has an under 17 team, limiting players graduating to the senior club. NETBALL: The netballers have been working hard in the off season and we anticipate fielding several highly competitive teams. Congratulations to Laura Corrick on taking out the Section 5 goal shooting award for 2016. Unfortunately, Laura has moved interstate and will be a great loss to the club. All the best to everyone involved at the club in 2017 and go Blues!

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 RESERVOIR After successfully claiming the 2015 Division 3

premiership flag, Reservoir Football Club suffered a mass exodus of players and failed to field sides for the 2016 season. THE CLUB: Despite the disappointing setback the club’s new committee rallied together and after plenty of hard work, unquestionable dedication and maximum effort by many, Reservoir Football Club is up and running and proudly taking to the field for 2017. SEASON 2017: Embracing the challenge ahead, senior coach Aaron Collins and reserves coach David Nelson, together with their assistant coaches, will guide a fit out of new faces, returning favourites and ever faithfuls. You will see familiar faces in 2015 premiership captain Ryan Docherty, dual premiership player Kent Beaumont and the ever reliant Dave McGregor, among others. RFC has also welcomed new players from far and wide to the stable at Crispe Park, including the likes of Josh Alexander from Lara FC, the Crellin brothers all the way from BulnBuln FC and small forward Rob Carnovale in a huge trek from the Ovens and Murray

BANYULE It’s been an incredibly rewarding and promising

summer within all areas across our great club and will ensure we tackle the 2017 season head on, and hold our plan and strong culture front of mind. THE CLUB: BFC are honoured to partner with new key major sponsors for this season, being Chemist Warehouse Australia, Middys, and Brolec, along with countless other key partners that we are sincerely honoured to have supporting us in 2017 and beyond. We recently held our season launch and jumper presentation, where all players along with committee and supporters were together as we shared our vision for the upcoming season and formally announced our senior leadership group to take us forward on field. All in all our coaching staff, committee, players, sponsors and supporters are ready for a big 2017 at the bear cave. THE SUMMER WRAP: Our quest to become a significant improver in the Division 3 competition began in early November and has continued with up to three sessions per week being undertaken by a committed group of players who have embraced new 30

League. Throw in the handful of faithfuls who stayed put at “Rezza” and those who returned to where their hearts always belonged, they complete a great group of people who are as ready as ever to kick off the 2017 season. SUPPORT: With the support from sponsors new and loyal, local supporters and families, Reservoir Football Club as a whole is grateful, appreciative and thankful to be alive and kicking again. It is a wonderful feeling to provide our little community with the action and entertainment that was sorely missed on a Saturday at Crispe Park. ROUND 1: The full and united atmosphere at our great club has returned with force and the anticipation of Round 1 is at an all-time high. methods of training along with a new game plan, new ways of preparing and thinking, facilitated by former Collingwood Sports Psychologist, David Stiff. Whilst the club is committed to nurturing our extremely talented junior list, and their transition into the senior football club family, we are also delighted to welcome a number of high profile recruits, headed by former NFL Division 1 leading goal kicker James Kroussoratis who recently extended his contract for a further 12 months, ball magnet Kieran Malone and Macleod senior premiership player, Matt Yarwood. These players have slotted seamlessly into the Banyule family at the Cave and along with the return of Scott Gumbleton captaining the side, and a fit Adam Barclay, have driven the standards over the summer months. Established players including Michael Italia, Daniel Kelly and Devin McDonald have also completed almost every available session, along with Artan Cabdi from a full pre-season at the Northern Knights. UPCOMING: April 8 – First home game V Epping, Presidents Luncheon and Sponsors Day; May 6 – Ladies Day (Mother’s Day). HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 ST MARY’S 2017 shapes up as an exciting season for all associated with The Burra.

THE CLUB: Many new sponsors, some great new additions to the playing list combined with the improvement in the existing young talent have everyone involved, sensing the start of something special. The hard work has just begun, but it WILL be worth it, if we’re committed, and doing whatever we can to support the club, committee and sponsors. MERCHANDISE AND MEMBERSHIP: A range of new shirts and beanies along with the existing polos and hoodies is available so let’s make sure everyone’s decked out in the colours on the sidelines. Membership is vital, so increased social membership with its free entry to all games, combined with other benefits will greatly help the progress of the club. At $20 it’s the best value in the NFL. FOOTBALL: Today we welcome Epping to Whatmough Park with the expectation that the efforts both on and off the field over the summer will provide the springboard to the season we need. The knowledge

Social events will be posted shortly. Get along and make it a season to remember! Jason Hill – President SENIORS: After falling short in the Grand Final, pre-season has been fairly solid with some new recruits in Andrew Luzza and Ash Flavel joining the club. This experience plus improvement in our youngsters Jason Stavely and Dallyce Taylor with other young guys who are still improving will hopefully hold the team in good stead. The group have been working hard on their skill level and are slowly picking up on a slightly different style of play, however they appear to be keen on the challenge and looking forward to an exciting season ahead. THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football League Record

NETBALL News NORTH MEETS EAST The Northern Netball League will take on the Eastern Football League in this year’s netball representative fixture.

The NNL will be seeking to maintain its perfect interleague record when it hosts the best of the East at Parade College on Friday May 12. Two matches will be played on the night, with an under-19 match to be the curtain-raiser to an open match. Brooke George has been named head coach of the NNL’s netball program, with Jacinta Tonkin to coach the open side and Sharon Ashworth to coach the under-19 team. George said the representative fixture would again be a great opportunity for the league’s best netballers to showcase their talent on the big stage. “We’ve got some of the most talented netballers across the state playing in our league, which is fantastic,” George said. “If we can get them all on board again this year, and possible even new talent which we are finding out about, that’s really exciting. “I know quite a lot of netballers who play across in the EFL so if they can also get a strong team together they’re going to be really good games. “I was very excited last year when they mentioned there was an under-19 representative match and it was great to give them an opportunity when perhaps if there was only an open match they may not have been selected. “To let them play a representative game is a great opportunity as well.” The NNL’s open and under-19 teams both won their two representative matches last year. Both sides recorded comfortable wins over the Southern Football Netball League, before backing up with victories over the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League the following weekend. The NNL also recorded two representative wins against the Southern Football Netball League in 2015, when A-Grade and B-Grade open teams took to the court. George said the support shown by the NNL’s clubs and elite players had contributed to the positive

representative results over the past two years. She hoped the same would continue in 2017. “A lot of the girls who play in this competition also play in many other competitions, including the Victorian Netball League and even higher levels, so there schedules are really busy,” George said. “For them to commit to doing this on top of their normal training is great. “From the first year we’ve had a core group who have played every year in the open squad and it will be fantastic to have them back on board if they are all willing to play again this year.” George expected the program to run in a similar format to recent years, with trials held during March before settling on two playing squads. “There will be one or two selection days where we will get the players to come in and do match play and look at that,” she said. “Being involved in the league since its inception, I’ve got a good view of all the players. “I get to see them on game days and we’ll continue watching this year just to make sure that we’re not missing out on anyone that needs to be in the squad. “It will sort of go from there and then we will have a couple of training sessions and make sure the girls are on the same page with what we’re looking for on the court.”

JUNIOR News QUARTET JOIN AFL RANKS Four Northern Football League players realised lifelong

dreams when they were selected in the 2016 AFL National Draft.

Patrick Lipinski, Matt Signorello and Mitchell Lewis were among the 77 players who were selected by AFL clubs in the 2016 AFL National Draft last November.

“I see him as the sort of Scott Pendlebury type player, that’s a bit of a stretch as Pendlebury’s one of the all-time greats at Collingwood, (but) with his basketball background he’s a really good size and shape,” Gieshcen said. Monmorency & Eltham’s Patrick Lipinski

Northcote Park’s Ben McNiece

The following week Northcote Park’s Ben McNiece became the league’s fourth player to land at an AFL club after signing as Essendon’s inaugural Next Generation Academy player. Lipinski was drafted by premier the Western Bulldogs – the club he grew up barracking for – with pick No. 28. The 18-year-old had a standout season with the Northern Knights and was long considered the TAC Cup side’s best draft chance. Lipinski featured among the Knights’ best players in nine of his 12 matches, overcoming a mid-season hand injury that forced him to miss the AFL Under-18 National Championship. Speaking to The Northerner last year, Northern Knights’ Talent Manager Rhy Gieshcen likened Lipinski to Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury. 42

THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football League Record

“He’s 187cm, he can play as that smart half-forward as a third tall but he can also go into the midfield. “When he’s got the football in his hand he’s really composed. Just like Pendlebury, the game slows down a bit. That’s the sort of player we liken him to, that really clean, classy inside mid who makes really good decisions.” Lipinski began his football career with Montmorency, before moving to Eltham in 2012. He enjoyed a standout 2015 season for the Panthers, where he led the Under-17 Blue goal kicking with 51 majors in 12 matches.

JUNIOR News Lipinski joins fellow Eltham product Marcus Bontempelli at Whitten Oval. Bontempelli has been a revelation in three years with the Bulldogs and last year claimed the club’s best and fairest in its drought-breaking premiership campaign.

West Preston-Lakeside & South Morang’s Matthew Signorello

Matthew Signorello was the second NFL junior selected in the National Draft when he was selected by Adelaide with pick No. 62. An NFL interleague representative at both Under-13 and Under-14 level, Signorello played the majority of his junior football with West Preston-Lakeside, before joining South Morang in 2013 and spending two years with the Lions. He spent most of the 2016 season with Ivanhoe Grammar, winning the team’s best and fairest, and averaged 23 disposals per game in eight TAC Cup appearances with the Northern Knights to finish fifth in the club’s best and fairest. Signorello’s ball-winning ability at stoppages is considered his major strength. He also has great endurance and speed and is a strong mark for his size. Adelaide’s National Recruiting Manager Hamish Ogilvie told the club’s website Signorello had long been on the Crows’ watchlist. “Matty Signorello is a player we’ve known about for a fair while and we tracked him pretty closely,” Ogilvie told AFC.com.au. “We were a bit nervous getting him through to our second-last pick, but we’re really pleased (to get him). “His real weapon is his ball take. He’s really clean and hard at the footy.” It’s not often a player selected with pick No.76 becomes an instant household name, but a case of irony ensured former Wallan and Whittlesea big man Mitchell Lewis

was one of the most talked-about selections in the 2016 draft. Lewis was selected by Hawthorn just one month after the club traded out premiership heroes Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis. Ironically, Mitchell Lewis wore number 53 for the Calder Cannons this year – a combination of the numbers Mitchell (5) and Lewis (3) wore with distinction for the Hawks. The 18-year-old key forward already stands at 198cm and weighs in at 92kg, which enables him to also pinchhit in the ruck. Lewis started his junior football career with Wallan, before spending the 2013 season with Whittlesea’s under-15 side. He lined up for the Calder Cannons 19 times over the past two years, and last season booted 13 goals in 10 appearances. Hawthorn’s Recruiting and List Manager Graham Wright said Lewis would be a project player for the Hawks. “Mitch is a tall forward who can pitch in a bit in the ruck,” Wright told Hawthornfc.com.au. “He is another one who is really competitive, marks the ball really well. “He is a scratch golfer and an outstanding junior cricketer as well, so he’s been really good at a couple of sports.” McNiece was eligible as a Category B Rookie for the position on the Bombers’ list as his mother was born in India. The 178cm defender played 85 senior games for Northcote Park over the past six seasons and was an integral part of the club’s 2012 premiership success. He represented the NFL in its interleague clash against the VAFA in 2015 and was named in the back pocket in the 2013 Division 1 Team of the Year. McNiece joined Essendon’s VFL team in 2015 and took out the club’s Best First Year Player after impressing in 13 appearances. He was elevated to vice-captain last season and finished third in the Bombers’ best and fairest. The NFL wishes Patrick, Matt, Mitchell and Ben the very best in their debut AFL season.
