EDITORIAL NFL U/15 GIRLS MAKE AFL VIC METRO JUNIOR CHAMPS GRAND FINAL The NFL junior representative teams completed their matches in the AFL Victoria Metropolitan Junior Championships on the Monday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend with mixed results.

The NFL fielded 2 x U/15, 2 x U/14 and 1 x U/15 Girls teams who played three matches against the Eastern Football league (EFL), South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) and the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL). These four leagues made up the Division 1 competition, with relegation for the league that finishes bottom of the U/14 (A) competition.

In our first year back into the Division 1 competition, the competition was extremely hot and wins were hard to come by. All of our players represented themselves and their clubs with great distinction and I am sure that everyone will benefit from playing against the best players in metropolitan Melbourne.

I would like to thank and congratulate all players, coaches, team officials and especially the parents of the boys and girls for their support and for driving their children all over Melbourne to play in the carnival.

The structure of the competition provides a Grand Final for the Division 1 leagues with the Division 2 leagues all jostling to get into Division 1 to earn the right to play in a Grand Final.

made it through to the grand final to play against the reigning champions from 2016, the YJFL this Saturday June 24 at 10am at Vermont Reserve.

A big congratulations to everyone involved in the team.

We are all very proud of the way the girls have played throughout the carnival and hopefully we can take the title away from the YJFL. Good luck in the grand final girls, I am sure you will represent the NFL with great pride.

NFL News NFL STARS ON DRAFT RADAR

Five of the Northern Football League’s most promising prospects have been named to compete in the NAB Under-18 National Championships for Vic Metro.

Eltham’s Nick Coffield, Epping’s Jack Petruccelle, South Morang’s Joel Grace and West Preston-Lakeside speedster Ethan Penrith were all named in the official squad, with Marcus Lentini from Diamond Creek named as an emergency.

Metro kicked off its carnival last Sunday against Western Australia at Domain Stadium. Petrucelle, Penrith and Knights’ skipper Coffield were all selected for the Round 1 clash, with Coffield named among Metro’s best players in the 14.12 (96) to 9.4 (58) win.

Coffield in particular has enjoyed a break out year for the Knights and has been touted as a possible first-round draft pick. The 190cm utility is the prototype modern day midfielder and Northern Knights talent manager Rhy Gieschen dedicated his rise to his adaptability.

Coffield leads the Knights in effective kicks and Gieschen said his composure through congested situations is what helps the Eltham product stand out.

“Nick has probably increased his versatility this year by playing in the midfield,” Gieschen said.

“He has played across half back most of his career and he’s even been able to swing forward at times for us and have an impact.

“His footwork in traffic is of real high quality and his decision making with ball in hand is his main asset.”

A talented basketballer as a junior, Petruccelle missed three years of football due to round ball commitments and only came back to the game midway through last year.

Gieschen said the athletic attributes from Petruccelle’s basketball background transfer directly into his football, with his pace out of stoppages catching the eye in the early TAC Cup rounds.

“He’s tested the quickest 20 metre sprint out of all the players in the TAC. He has really exciting electric speed and is just an athlete in general,” Gieschen said. “He’s become a lot more consistent and something that has pleased us a lot is his want to chase and tackle and do the team things to go with his exceptional offensive traits.”

West Preston-Lakeside’s Ethan Penrith was named in the back pocket for Metro last weekend and Gieschen said

his selection is reward for his tough defensive efforts so far this season.

“He’s another who has explosive speed. We rate him as probably the best tackler in the TAC Cup,” he said.

“He’s starting now to really take the game on and use that pace to hurt the opposition both defensively and offensively.”

South Morang ruckman Joel Grace missed selection for Round 1 of the Championships but has had more disposals than his opposing ruckman in eight of his nine matches so far this season.

Gieschen said this ability to follow up his tap work and have influence at stoppages, as well as around the ground, is what makes him an effective ruck option.

“Last year Joel was probably a little bit inconsistent as a bottom-age ruck coming up against older guys, but this year he has really improved his game,” he said. “His competitiveness has been a real factor. He’s been really physical in the ruck and his follow up work has been fantastic, he kicks the ball quite well for a big man too.”

Diamond Creek’s Marcus Lentini started the TAC Cup year with a bang, averaging over 25 disposals in his first three matches before being struck down by a quad injury after impressing in the first Vic Metro trial game, forcing him to sit seven weeks on the sideline.

Lentini didn’t take long to get back to top form, gathering 28 disposals on his way to being named the Knights best player in his first match against the Calder Cannons a fortnight ago.

The Knights sit mid table of the TAC Cup ladder ten rounds in and Gieschen said the side has its eyes on finals football this year.

“I guess while the aim of the competition is individual improvement we have made it a real aim of ours to play finals this year. We think we have the quality of players not just at our top end, but we have some real depth.”

NFL News RESULT NOT THE SOLE FOCUS FOR UNDER-15 GIRLS

NFL Under-15 Girls representative coach Chyloe Kurdas has expressed her thrill ahead of the 2017 AFL Victoria Metro Junior Championships Division 1 grand final this weekend.

The NFL qualified after defeating the South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) and South East Juniors (SEJ), following its Round 1 loss to the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) in the round-robin stage of the tournament.

For the second-straight year the NFL will face the YJFL in the decider.

Kurdas said it is an opportunity her side will relish ahead of the showdown at Vermont Reserve this Saturday.

“We’re looking forward to a fourth opportunity to play together as a group. This group will never be together again so having the fourth opportunity to do that is really exciting,” Kurdas told The Northerner.

“They played Yarra in the first game (losing by 44 points) and they’re playing them in the fourth game so we’re really appreciative and grateful for the opportunity to test ourselves and see how much we’ve improved across the four weeks.”

Regardless of the result on Saturday, Kurdas, who formerly worked as AFL Victoria’s Female Football Development Manager, said the NFL girls’ squad should hold their heads high after what has already been a “successful program”.

“The performances were really quality from our girls over the three games and the program for us has already been a huge success,” she said.

“The success measures of our program aren’t based around the results of our games, it’s about the learning that our kids demonstrate.

“We’ve already achieved the things we wanted to achieve which was to introduce young girls to elite habits that you need to bring if you want to take your football further.

“The girls have been really outstanding with how they’ve carried themselves throughout the whole program. They’ve played really structured football and have done all the things that were asked of them.”

ability to demonstrate what they’ve learned over the program, praising the leadership skills many of her young players have displayed.

“There’s not one girl that’s been disappointing and they’ve all continued to grow and develop,” she said.

“Alyssa Bannan has been a stand out with her work rate and her leadership.

“The captain Guilia Ceravolo has also been fantastic with her leadership, especially in that tough game last week where we came from behind to beat South Metro.

“Her hardness and willingness to work for her girls was just extraordinary.”

Kurdas will continue to maintain a level-headed approach into this week’s grand final, with the end result not the be-all and end-all.

“The scoreboard hasn’t been and won’t be a focus for us at all,” she said “We actually don’t care about winning or losing, what we really care about is applying the things that we’ve learned. That’s what’s critical for us.”

The Under-15 Girls Division 1 grand final will be played at Vermont Reserve (corner Terrara Road & Canterbury Road, Vermont) from 10:00am.

The NFL wishes all players and coaches the best of luck for the match and encourages all supporters to head along to support the girls.

NFL News ROOS POWER PAST BULLS

Macleod returned to the top of the Meadows

Greyhounds Division 1 ladder after romping to a 62-point win over Bundoora.

After conceding the first two goals of the game, the Roos ran rampant to record the 16.17 (113) to 7.9 (51) win at Yulong Reserve, moving the club four points clear atop the ladder with a 7-1 record after eight rounds.

Justin White and Jack Bianchin were superb across half back and racked up possessions at will, while Chris Long, Anthony Doherty and Ned McKeown all produced strong performances in their side’s big victory.

Macleod coach Garry Ramsay said the performance was his side’s best of the year.

“That may have been the best we’ve played this year so I’m very happy with the boys. It was a really good win,” Ramsay said. “(Bundoora) probably had a few key players out but I thought we moved the ball pretty well. Our disposal was really good and we didn’t turn the ball over too many times, so that was really pleasing.”

Macleod shared the load in attack with a dozen players getting on the goal kickers sheet, led by Matthew Clark who finished with a team-high three majors.

Ramsay credited his side’s versatility for its ability to kick a winning score against the team ranked fourth on the ladder. “We had 12 goal kickers which is really pleasing,” he said.

“There are a lot of versatile players there and that works well for us if one does go down, where we’d like to think we have someone there to replace them.”

Macleod set its win up in a 20-minute period before quarter time, where it piled on five unanswered goals to a take a 23-point lead into the first break.White and Bianchin each found a heap of the ball which ensured the Roos’ forwards had plenty of opportunities, with the ball continually driven into the visitors’ attacking half.

At times Bundoora was its own worst enemy, with the Bulls making a number of costly defensive turnovers which directly led to Macleod shots at goals.

This was highlighted by the Bulls twice overstepping the paint from consecutive kick-ins from behinds – allowing Macleod to continually build pressure by locking the ball in its forward 50.

The quarter-time break did nothing to stop Macleod’s

momentum as Clark put through his second goal just one minute after the restart of play.

Bundoora was gradually able to even the midfield battle and netted consecutive goals through Danny Younan and Andrew Carmusciano in the space of three minutes to cut the deficit to 16 points midway through the term.

However a quick response from Reid Brandt and another goal to Jack Langford gave the Roos a healthy 32-point lead at the main break – a margin which should have been greater but for some sprayed shots at goal late in the term.

Early goals to Carmusciano and Gary Moorcroft kept Bundoora in the hunt in the third term, with the home crowd finding its voice – particularly after a huge mark from Dom Nixon on centre wing.

However a running goal from Hamish Paynter from a defensive turnover and another to Clark minutes later sealed the contest, with the Roos taking an unassailable 38-point lead into the last change.

The visitors piled on five goals to one in the final term to go on for a percentage-boosting win, with Ramsay hopeful his side can carry the momentum into the second half of the season.

“This has been the most stop-start year we’ve had and it has been really hard to get that continuity,” he said “I don’t think we’ve been playing all that well and we’ve just got over the line a couple of times.

“We’re really looking forward to playing week after week now and really getting stuck into it.”

NFL News STARS, BULLDOGS PLAY OUT THRILLING DRAW

Fitzroy Stars and North Heidelberg played the first draw of the 2017 A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 season.

The highly-anticipated Round 8 match-up lived up to expectations, with the often physical, always enthralling battle at Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval producing 37 goals.

The Bulldogs held a lead throughout the majority of the game and even blew the margin out to 30 points at the midway stage of the third term.

But an incredible comeback from the home side saw them kick 10 of the last 15 goals to ensure the scores were tied 18.14 (122) to 19.8 (122) at the final siren.

Despite playing catch-up footy for much of the day, the Stars will feel disappointed not to have come away with the four points after conceding the final two goals of the engrossing match.

Richard Bamblett looked to have sealed the game for the Stars after his goal extended the home side’s rare lead to 12 points with just minutes remaining. But the Bulldogs refused to go away and kicked the remaining two goals via Blair and Shane Harvey.

The Stars were the last team to have a chance at snatching the lead, with the ball locked deep in their forward line in the dying seconds. But their efforts to try to force a behind failed as the siren sounded.

The home side had five multiple goal kickers and possessed plenty of firepower in the front half. Vaasili Tuifao (five goals) and John Hayes (four) both enjoyed solid games, while Kain Proctor, Max Maynard and Clinton Edwards also impressed.

In his return from an injury layoff, it was Shane Harvey’s eight goals which proved crucial in the match and he always looked a class above for the Bulldogs.

Brent Harvey and Brody Tardio’s speed on the outside was also dangerous for the visitors, while Mitch Dillon was imposing swinging from attack to defence.

Much of the pre-match interest focused on Brent Harvey, who missed the pair’s earlier clash this season in which the Stars claimed a 41-point win – the result the Bulldogs’ only loss for the year.

The AFL games record holder got his side off to a flyer, bursting clear from the first bounce to put through the first goal of the game in the opening seconds. Despite

producing a strong showing, Harvey was well held in patches by Kain Proctor.

Liam McLeod and Dillon also kicked truly as the Dogs jumped out to a three-goal advantage, but the momentum couldn’t be sustained as the Stars bounced back with five of the next six goals to claim a 10-point lead at quarter-time, with Peter Hood’s foot skills a stand out.

North Heidelberg established its superiority during the second quarter, kicking five of the last six goals of the term to take a 12-point lead into half-time. The Stars only had themselves to blame after continuously missing shots on goal – kicking 2.7 for the term.

The Bulldogs’ buffer continued to extend early in the third quarter with a clear gap emerging between the two sides.

But the never-say-die Stars mounted their fightback, with Tuifao and Hayes kicking the last three goals to shrink the deficit from 30 points to 12 at three quartertime, setting up the breathtaking finale.

The Stars kicked seven of the first 10 goals of the last quarter, with Hayes’ third putting his side in front for the first time since early in the second term.

The home side got as much as 16 points ahead in an extraordinary turn of events, but were unable to maintain the lead, with Shane Harvey’s eighth goal ensuring the two sides shared the points in a classic.

NFL News POWER NOTCH SECOND WIN

Laurimar put in a dominant display to record its second win of the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 season, defeating Reservoir by 64 points.

A nine-goal to one second half proved the difference at Laurimar Reserve, with the Power recording a 16.12 (108) to 6.8 (44) victory – their second-successive triumph on home soil.

Star recruit Lance Whitnall and forward Jacson Cecil led the goal kicking with three goals apiece, while Leigh Murphy, Joel McDonald and Kieran McMillan were the most impressive for the home side.

Lachlan Shaw, David McGregor and Aaron Lanning were among the best for the Mustangs in defeat, as their side’s winless season continued.

Reservoir made a promising start to the contest, with McGregor taking a strong contested mark and converting to get the scoreboard ticking.

However a solid first ten minutes quickly turned to dust for Reservoir as Laurimar kicked the next four majors, including a brilliant long distance goal from Adam Dennis to take control of the contest.

A late goal to Thomas Goodwin reduced the Mustangs’ deficit to 11 points at quarter-time, however a high number of turnovers prompted Power coach Wayne Sharkie to urge his men to tidy their disposal in the second quarter.

A goal-for-goal contest followed in an even second term.

Despite having most of the possession inside its attacking half, Laurimar couldn’t convert it into scoreboard dominance, kicking 3.6 for the quarter to lead by 16 points at the main break.

With their best chance of gaining their first win of the season right in front of them, the Mustangs aimed to come out all guns blazing at the start of the second half.

However, the visitors’ chances quickly diminished as Laurimar kicked the first four goals of the third quarter to put a major dent in any hope of a victory for Reservoir.

After a quite first half, Whitnall led the Power’s influential third term, kicking back-to-back majors in the quarter.

application of frenetic pressure seemed too much to handle for Reservoir, who despite a late goal, trailed by 34 points at three quarter-time.

Mustangs coach Aaron Collins continued to inject hope into his team assuring them at the final break that the game was still there to be won in the final quarter.

Despite the Mustangs’ strong belief, any dream of a victory was quashed after Cecil and Whitnall each kicked their third goals of the game early in the fourth term.

The Power went on with the job in the final quarter, piling on five unanswered goals to run away with a dominant 64-point win.

Laurimar will take renewed confidence into its Round 10 clash when it hosts third-placed St Mary’s, while Reservoir will continue its search for its first win of the season when it takes on Epping at Crispe Park.

NFL News LIONS HAVE HALLMARKS OF TOP SIDE

Gary Hall’s dream run as South Morang coach continued with a 38-point win over St Mary’s at Whatmough Park in Round 9.

The Lions surged to the top of the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 ladder with their fourth straight win under Hall, who took the reins from Dean Grainger in Round 6.

Epping and St Mary’s were expected to provide stern tests of South Morang’s premiership credentials after Hall’s first two games in charge resulted in commanding wins over Reservoir and Mernda.

The Lions made light work of Epping before the Queen’s Birthday long weeked, triumphing by 37 points, and accounted for the Burra 16.13 (109) to 10.11 (71) on Saturday.

“They were always going to be one of the toughest teams to beat, especially down at their ground too,” Hall said.

“It’s a hard ground to play, so I was really happy with the result.”

The visitors seized control in the second term, booting seven goals to three to claim a 41-point half-time lead.

Hall said his side was “near-faultless” in the opening half.

“Their pressure was fantastic and they really set the game up in the first half,” he said.

With Tye Hall prolific in the centre of the ground, Raafat Rachrache booting four goals and captain Mitch Buckley controlling their defence, the Lions recorded their seventh win from eight games by 38 points.

Epping’s shock victory over previously-undefeated Banyule allowed South Morang to assume top spot ahead of its second bye of 2017 this weekend.

The Lions have won their four matches under Hall by an average of 75 points.

“It’s been pretty good, the boys have responded well,” Hall said.

“There’s a lot of positive energy around the place and they are playing good footy.”

Hall said the week’s rest had come at a perfect time for his side as it plans an assault on the last eight rounds of the campaign starting with Heidelberg West in Round 11.

“We’ve got to keep the momentum going, stick to the plan,” he said.

“It’s all going well so far. There was a few sore boys after (Saturday), it was a pretty hard game.

“They’ll have a light week on the track. The break will do them good I think.”

In other Round 9 results, Leigh Judd and Bill Hughes led Epping to an upset 9.19 (73) to 9.11 (65) win over Banyule, with the Bears slipping to second spot on the ladder following their first loss of the year.

Laurimar posted its second win by 64 points against Reservoir and Mernda’s malaise continued with a 67-point defeat against Heidelberg West.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview POWERHOUSES BUILDING Round 9 marks the end of the opening half of the 2017

Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 season, with all ten sides still in finals contention after the first two months of competition.

A relatively tight round of results last weekend saw a number of signifcant changes to the ladder, with Macleod assuming outright top spot, West Preston-Lakeside moving into the top-three, while Greensborough and Heidelberg mounted a charge towards the top-five.

Heidelberg is looking for consecutive wins for the first time this season when it hosts West PrestonLakeside at Warringal Park.

The Tigers welcomed back a host of stars last weekend, with Sam Gilmore, Marcus Marigliani, Paul Bower and Ben Cosgriff all returning to help their side to a onepoint win over Northcote Park – the result dislodging the Cougars from top place.

Tom Sullivan, Charles Gaylard and Gilmore were significant contributors in what was an exceptional contest, with the Tigers leading by 16 points at quarter-time before being reined in. The second half featured a host of lead changes, with the Tigers holding on to improve their record to 3-6.

It was a vital win for the reigning premier and keeps them right in touch with the top-five. While the Tigers welcomed back some stars, they still were far from fullstrength with Michael Brunelli, Shaun Huy and Lachlan Wilson not available, while star utility Adam Symes sadly sustained a season-ending knee injury.

While plenty can change between now and the end of the season, last week was another reminder that Heidelberg still has plenty to offer in 2017.

West Preston-Lakeside is on the hunt for its third win on the trot after overcoming Eltham by 17 points in a tight battle in Round 8. The Roosters led by less than a goal at the first three breaks, before edging clear with a three-goal to one final quarter.

Liam McVeigh produced his best performance of the season to kick a team-high three goals, helping to cover the loss of competition leading goal kicker Ahmed Saad, who missed the match serving a onematch suspension.

The Roosters won a see-sawing battle against Heidelberg when the sides met in Round 1, with Saad taking the game by the scruff of the neck – kicking three of his seven goals late in the final quarter.

Bundoora heads down Grimshaw Street to take on Greensborough at War Memorial Park. The form-line belies the two sides’ current ladder position, with the fourth-placed Bulls beaten in their past two starts, while the sixth-placed Boro have won their past three.

Greensborough celebrated Jason Rogers’ 150th senior appearance with a comfortable 45-point win over Whittlesea, with the win pushing Robert Hyde’s side into its highest ladder position this year. The Boro never looked troubled after booting five goals to one in the first term.

Rogers was at his best in his milestone match and received maximum votes in the Coaches Player of the Year award, while Nick Riddle and Adrian Cataldo led a stingy defence that conceded just five goals.

The Boro remain one of just two teams yet to kick 100 points or more in a match, however Matthew Haynes and Andrew Stellas each enjoyed season-best performances against the Eagles and finished with three goals apiece.

Bundoora was no match for Macleod in a heavy 62-point defeat at Yulong Reserve last week.

After kicking the first two goals, the Bulls never truly threatened and were made to pay for an uncharacteristically high number of turnovers.

A spate of injuries is threatening to derail Bundoora’s campaign following a 5-1 start, with skipper Brent Marshall, Nathan Thomas, Todd Hughes, Scott Dowell and Jack Furlong all sidelined as their side suffered its second-straight defeat to slip to fourth spot on the ladder.

Danny Younan was a class above and regularly tried to spark his side, while Dom Nixon continued his strong form across half back. Andrew Carmusciano’s push closer to goal was again a positive, finishing with three majors for the second-consecutive week.

Recent outings between Greensborough and Bundoora have been exceptionally tight, with the past five matches decided by an average of just 14 points, including last year’s first semi final which the Boro won by six points.

Top-placed Macleod plays six of its final ten matches at home, beginning with this week’s clash with fifthplaced Montmorency.

Coach Garry Ramsay described last week’s win at Bundoora as Macleod’s best performance of the season, with the Roos kicking 16 goals to five after a

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview slow start. It capped a memorable day for the visitors, who left Yulong Reserve with strong wins in all three grades.

Macleod’s ability to spread the load up forward was again on display, with 12 players kicking a goal.

Matthew Clark led the way with three majors, while Anthony Doherty marked everything that came his way and set up a host of scoring chances for his teammates.

The Roos had winners all over the ground, with Chris Long strong in the ruck, Lucas Hobbs and Hamish Paynter winning plenty of ball in the midfield and Justin White and Jack Bianchin mopping up cleanly from defence.

Montmorency showed genuine grit to ensure Daniel Keenan celebrated his 300th club game with a win against former side Hurstbridge. The Magpies kicked three unanswered goals in the last quarter to turn a 15-point deficit at the final change into a six-point win.

It was the Magpies experienced stars who willed their side to their first victory since Round 3, with Keenan, Jesse Donaldson, Matthew Hunt and Joel McLellan all among the best players in the thrilling victory.

With the five sides below snapping at its heels, Montmorency will need to continue winning to remain in the top-five. However the confidence gleaned from last week’s second half should give the Magpies plenty of hope heading into this week’s tough assignment.

Whittlesea makes the longest trip in the top flight when it travels to Bill Lawry Oval to take on Northcote Park.

The Cougars’ six-game winning streak came to a halt at Heidelberg last week, with Matt McLennan’s side left to rue four shots that hit the post in the one-point loss to a revitalised opponent.

It was a trio of defenders who stood up most in defeat, with Damian Galofaro, Nick Carter and Gerard Sutton among their side’s best players, while Jackson Starcevich, Ricky Fandrich and Dylan Campbell each finished with three goals in the shootout.

With consecutive home matches against sides currently placed in the bottom-three, the Cougars remain well placed despite last week’s loss, however as has regularly been proven this year – no opponent can be taken for granted.

Whittlesea’s winless run continued to four games after succumbing to Greensborough in Round 8 and the Eagles are in desperate need of a form reversal to jump off the bottom of the ladder.

The Eagles were slow out of the gates at War Memorial Park following the Queen’s Birthday weekend break and headed into the quarter-time 24 points in arrears.

The deficit extended in each of the following three terms, meaning the Eagles have outscored their opponents in only one of their past 13 quarters.

Jai Robinson and Riley Dyson were major ball winners in last week’s loss, while the defence held up well under relatively constant pressure. Jaron Murphy’s ability to find the big sticks continued with three goals, improving his tally to nine goals from his past five matches.

An interesting match awaits when Hurstbridge takes on Eltham at Ben Frilay Oval, where both sides are hoping to bounce back from close defeats last week.

Hurstbridge looked on track for its third win of the year for much of the opening three quarters against Montmorency after playing a strong brand of football.

The Bridges won the ball in close and adapted well to the confines of Montmorency Park.

However, they couldn’t deny their fast-finishing host to fall to a six-point defeat – their second-consecutive close loss after losing to Greensborough in Round 7. Despite going down, the performance again demonstrated the Bridges’ best is more than capable in the top flight.

Tom Simpson was superb for Hurstbridge and continued the form that saw him selected in the NFL representative side, while Jack Grimes and Tieren Barbera had solid outings – with the latter capping his performance with two impressive goals from the boundary.

Eltham slipped from sixth to eighth on the back of its 17-point loss to West Preston-Lakeside, however the Panthers were far from disgraced in defeat – managing to stay within touching distance for much of the day against the premiership fancy.

Tom Rogers provided plenty of run and carry for the home side, Anton Woods again won a heap of the football and Jack Woodful continued his impressive debut season to be named in the best for the third time in six weeks.

This week’s match starts a run of away matches for the Panthers, who are on the road in five of their next six matches. A win this week could put them within percentage of the top-five at the halfway point of the season, while a loss could see them slip to the bottom of the ladder.

SENIORS: A five-goal opening term helped set up our third-straight win and we were able to control the game, leading at every change and running out 45-point winners. In his 150th seniors game for the Boro, Jason Rogers was best afield, much to the delight of his adoring fan base. Matthew Haynes returned to form upon his recall to the senior side, kicking three goals. Nick Riddle and Adrian Cataldo were again influential down back, while three goals to Andrew Stellas proved important. This week’s clash with Bundoora proves as another massive clash as we sit just one game outside the top five.

RESERVES: Kept their undefeated record intact, recording a 147-point win over Whittlesea. Jake Rowe and Dylan Clancy’s left boots were lethal, booting goals and setting up their teammates, whilst Liam Emery and Tom Bevan-Shannon were excellent. Brett Woodhouse kicked two majors in his first game for the Boro, and proved he certainly has a role to play moving forward.

SENIORS: What a disappointing outcome to our last game, when our hopes were so high of a good win over Macleod back at home for the first time in a month.

Macleod really turned the tables on us and must have really done their homework as they had all our bases covered. Andrew Carmusciano played a great game along with Dom Nixon and Joey Palazzolo. Milad Almatrah played his first game in our seniors. We hope you enjoyed the experience.

RESERVES: We were playing okay however once again we faded in the second half and Macleod just kicked away. Our best players: Jordan Galea, Tyla Barrow, Neil Gloury and Stephen Binn.

UNDER-19: We have really been up and down each week since the start of the season and it must be frustrating for our players, as well as our members and supporters, with the way we have been playing this year, hopefully in the near future we can level out our performances.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 HURSTBRIDGE This week we welcome Rhyce Shaw and Eltham to Ben Frilay in what will be an exciting day of football.

SENIORS: Firstly well done to Tanka and the development boys. Really rapt for the boys to get their second win of the year. In terms of the seniors, well we are getting closer. Another close game against Montmorency with us falling just short. Really proud of the boys’ efforts in the first three quarters, but we fell away in the last. Some real positives to take from the match in our ability to win the footy in close and also constantly repel from Mont’s forward line. It wasn’t to be in the end and we couldn’t hold on to our lead. This week we take on and in-form Eltham and I know if we can give effort for another 15 more mins we are going to be in it. I’m still very proud of this group and the footy we are playing and I know if we can continue to take on the game we will get what we deserve. Good luck this week and go the Bridges.

ELTHAM This week we travel up the line to meet Hurstbridge in a vital game.

FOOTBALL: Just the one win last Saturday, with the under-19s scoring an emphatic win over West PrestonLakeside to regain top spot on the ladder. This week they have a bye. The reserves were in it early but were blown out of it in the second half. The undermanned seniors were very competitive and were in it all day but just found West Preston-Lakeside a little too strong in the end.

against a side that was is looking for its first win for 2017. We were doing a lot of things right early but our boys held tough all day and battled it out for four quarters. What would have to be a huge contender for goal of the year by Mitch Hymus kicking a torpedo punt from 60m out and slotting it straight through the middle to put the boys six points up and win the game.

The 45-year anniversary of our 1972 A-grade Premiership, 35-year anniversary of the 1982 flag, 20-year anniversary of the 1997 A-grade premiership, 15-year anniversary of the 2002 premiership and 10-year anniversary of our most recent premiership, the 2007 under-19s flag.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 MACLEOD We are at back at De Winton Park today to take on Montmorency.

SENIORS: Lots to like about last week’s 62-point win over Bundoora. We were slow out of the blocks, conceding the first two goals but from there on we went on our merry way. Celebrating his life member status, Scooter had the ball on a string in defence ably assisted by a couple of former Bulls in Ned McKeown and Jack Bianchin. Anthony ‘The Duck’ Doherty marked everything that came his way in attack and Longy battled manfully in the ruck against a couple of bigger opponents.

RESERVES: After a poor second quarter, we hit our straps in the second half to record a solid 19-point win.

Henks entertained with a couple of screamers which should have him back in the seniors very shortly.

UNDER-19: The young fellas kicked the day off with a big 49-point win. Chris Kantzidis continued his impressive form.

NETBALL: Macleod 1 went down to Fitzroy Stars while

MONTMORENCY Macleod have been travelling very nicely and would feel confident going into this week’s encounter. Our boys know we have to play our best footy. Here is a chance for us to claim a big scalp.

SENIORS: Pulled off a must-win, given it was Bomber Kennan’s 300th game for us and we needed a victory to stay in the finals hunt. The Bridges pushed us to the limit and played sharp, direct and smart footy for the first two and a bit quarters. Fortunately our boys clicked into gear midway through the third term and ground out a crucial victory. Bomber, at age 35, was superb in his milestone game. He kept us in the game in the first half and together with big Joel, Jesse D, Billy Jenkin, Mattie Hunt and Nick Snowdon ensured the momentum was going our way in the second half. We would like to acknowledge Hurstbridge’s sense of sportsmanship after the game when their players helped form a guard of honour for Bomber, who played the early part of his career at Ben Frilay Oval. All Bomber’s brothers were there to see him rack up another career highlight. And Chris Keenan, a former Mont full-forward, gave a terrific and at times humorous speech in honour of his brother 18

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 NORTHCOTE PARK This week we host Whittlesea.

SENIORS: It is allowed to make a couple of excuses when you lose an away game by one point. Well here goes. For a start we hit the post four times which was about as often as we hit an on-field target. Then an ill-disciplined piece of self-indulgence cost us two goals – given the circumstances the conspiracy theorists have been bold enough to suggest a degree of pre-planning, of course such a scurrilous suggestion is dismissed out of hand. Heidelberg, no doubt, would point out that they lost two very good players during the game, but they are always complaining. Coming into the game we knew that the Tigers’ position on the ladder was never a true reflection of their capacity and at full strength they would be a power to be reckoned with. The speculation will now rightly be on how far they can advance rather than relegation. The game itself was a great battle from the opening bounce to the final siren with neither side able to get a decisive break. However they used the ball much better and it is telling that four of our six best, Damo, Carts, Sutts and Dylan were backmen. Jordan

WHITTLESEA This week we travel to Bill Lawry Oval to take on Northcote Park.

SENIORS: Disappointing loss last week, against Greensborough. Jim was happy with Jai Robinson and the back six on Saturday but disappointed that the team was flat early and that their skills let them down.

We are looking to improve today against Northcote Park, who will be keen for a win after going down to Heidelberg by just a point last week.

RESERVES: Our reserves were undermanned last week but gallant in defeat. Mark Allan acknowledged the fact that the guys fought the game out to the very end and they can be proud of their efforts. Special mentions to Sloan, Crawford, Demps, Henry Bland and Lacey and it was fantastic to see Todd back out there weaving his way through traffic.

UNDER-19: A well-deserved win last week – the first time an Eagles under-19 team has won against Greensborough. The boys worked hard and committed to their structures. Their team work was a feature and 20

and Jackson were the other two to catch the judge’s eye.

RESERVES: We were challenged early in the reserves game however after half-time we kicked 16 goals to run away and win by 94 points. The side was further strengthened by the return of Patty O’Connell who slotted right back in after an eighteen month sabbatical. Aiden, the Waldrons, Cobba, Jayden, Jesse and Patch were among the better players but really it is unfair to omit any of the 24.

NETBALL: Our netball Team 3 had a good win. Team 2 missed by two goals, while Team 1 was well beaten by Greensborough.

SOCIAL: Tickets are on sale for the $10,000 day which will be held this year on Sunday 6th August. The players have organised a Cocktail Night at El Coco, 120 King Street on 22 July. Tickets at $40/$30 include discounted drinks and finger food. See Joel.

Tight game in our season opener and today we’ll be looking to square the ledger

SENIORS: Last Saturday saw one of the more memorable games of footy in recent years at the Den. With a few familiar faces back from injury the Bergs got out of the blocks early to hold a good quarter-time lead. As to be expected, with a quality Northcote Park crew, they hit back hard and the game turned into a real battle. The second half was characterised by regular lead changes with the Bergs holding on for the narrowest of wins.

RESERVES: The twos started strongly and the first half was a pretty competitive hit-out, however the Cougars got right on top and ran-out big winners.

THE CLUB: We’d ask everyone to spare a thought for the Duke, one of the genuine stars of the NFL. At the time of submitting club notes he was having a scan on a knee that we all hope is not season ending.

WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE Good to get a win last week against the Panthers and

sneak a spot up the ladder.

THE CLUB: The twos keep winning and the under-19s came up against the top team but keep battling away.

Lethal got the cash in the tickets. This week it’s the Tigers again and they may be on the move but I think our Roosters might have other ideas. Anyway it should be another cracking game. Next week we’re on the road to Whittlesea who are hosting their ladies day with a number of our girls attending by bus so after a few with the Eagles the rooms will be open to box on. Tomorrow is back on at the club for a pleasant Sunday from 3pm.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 - Preview HITTING THE HALFWAY MARK

Round 9 looks set to be a cracking round, headlined by a match between the second and fourth-placed sides.

North Heidelberg takes on Lower Plenty at Shelley Reserve in a big game for both sides’ top-two chances.

The Bulldogs are coming off one the most entertaining games of the season, following a draw against the Fitzroy Stars. Leading by 30 points during the third term, the Bulldogs conceded seven of the final 10 goals to tie with the Stars.

Shane Harvey was in red-hot firm in his return from a foot injury and finished with eight goals, while Nick Matthews, Brent Harvey, Andre Habchi and Mitch Dillon were also among the Bulldogs’ best in the thriller.

Stephen Saddington’s side will take on a Lower Plenty team coming off the biggest win of the season. The Bears kicked 33 goals and had 57 scoring shots to overpower a heavily undermanned Panton Hill by 197 points.

Competition leading goal kicker Darcy Barden booted 10 majors, having now kicked 21 goals in the past three games, while Mark Favrin kicked five goals for the second-consecutive week. Jordan Sacco, Sam Paterson and Tom Keys were among the Bears’ best performers.

This will be the second encounter between these sides this year, following the Round 3 clash which the Bulldogs won by 47 points. In that game, Shane Harvey booted seven goals, while brother Brent was dominant in a best on ground performance.

Diamond Creek returned to the top of the ladder following an 84-point victory over Lalor and now hosts Thomastown at Coventry Oval.

The Demons held Lalor scoreless in the first quarter and looked on track to keep the Bloods goalless for the second time this season, before conceding in the second term. Jess Cosaitis bagged five goals, while Hugh Kavanagh, Josh Lorey and Tyler Barnes had superb games.

After eight rounds the Demons have the best defensive record of any ladder-leading team in Division 2 for the past five seasons. North Heidelberg’s 491 points conceded after eight rounds in 2014 is the closest to the Demons’ current tally of 397 points.

Thomastown will this week try to break through the resilient Demons defence. The Bears are still within percentage of the top-four, following their 25-point victory over Watsonia in Round 8.

in their side’s fifth win of the season, while Jacob Osei-Duro kicked four goals, and Daniel and Robert Chadwick combined for five.

The Bears proved once again they are the best performed side outside the top-four, but do need to take big scalps if they want to play finals this season.

Unfortunately, they will be without star ball winner Matthew Cupo going forward.

The Fitzroy Stars travel to Watsonia for the second time this season. The Stars will have fond memories of A.K. Lines Reserve following a 94-point victory at the venue in Round 3.

The Stars produced a stunning second-half comeback last week to draw with North Heidelberg, doing so with key players Clint Edwards and Lionel Proctor both on the bench with injuries after the main break.

Vaasili Tuifao was again a pillar in attack, booting five goals and was supported by John Hayes, who booted four majors in his best game of the season. Kain Proctor and Max Maynard were also strong performers.

A victory this week would likely see the Stars remain in third position but a defeat could see them drop out of the top-four, with Lower Plenty and Thomastown hot on their tail.

Watsonia will hope to end its four-game losing streak after last week competing admirably against Thomastown. The Saints had just as much of the play as their host, but were unable to match the Bears’ efficiency going forward.

Jamie Haber and Kelby White each produced seasonbest performances, while Adrian Alfonsi kicked multiple goals for the fifth time this season to take his tally to 16 majors.

The bottom two sides meet at Lalor Reserve when Lalor hosts Panton Hill in a vital game for both teams.

The two will be desperate for a win to help kickstart an improved run of form heading with players returning from injury in the second half of the season.

A victory for the Bloods could see them move equal on points with Watsonia depending on the Saints result, while a victory for Panton Hill would be its first for the season and give the players confidence they can avoid the wooden spoon.

These sides met in Round 3 and in that match it was the Bloods who came out victorious. Jhye BaddeleyKelly was superb, while Nick Sandy and Harley Nancarrow combined for nine goals to guide the Bloods’ to a 28-point victory.

SENIORS: Another solid win against Lalor last round, although perhaps a little frustrating in front of goal.

Tyler Barnes, Hughy, J Lo, Chappy and Jess were among our better players in the win.

RESERVES: The 2s had a good win on a great day for footy, the first three quarters were very scrappy but we managed to turn it on with 19 scoring shots in the last quarter. Over all it was a pleasing game which posted a good lesson to the boys to never underestimate a side on their home ground.

UNDER-19: After being 14 points in front at ½ time we were heavily outscored in the second half to go down by 15 points. Our midfield struggled to contain their direct opponents which then put a lot of pressure on our back line. The three losses this year have all been in games where for a period of time in the middle of the game we were comfortably in front and playing far better than our opposition yet we still ended up losing. It shows that our best is still very good but our

SENIORS: It was a tight affair for most of the day.

We were able to make better of our opportunities to register our third win on the trot and earn another valuable four points. A fantastic way to send off club favourite, Cups, and we wish him and his lovely partner all the best in pending parenthood RESERVES: Got the win but it certainly wasn’t our best performance. Players did not follow instructions and our attitude from the start was not up to speed, with a few latecomers being close to not getting a game. This will need to change as our biggest test comes over the next few weeks NETBALL: Team 1 stood strong against West PrestonLakeside. Our defense kept the opposition to a low score, while we welcomed back some accuracy from our shooters to give a strong win. Team 2 had a strong game, from centre passing to goals and coming out of defense. Our movement was clean and all players worked well backing each other down the court. An awesome win over Watsonia. Team 3 played well as a team down the court with strong defense and 26

consistency is lacking. We just need to learn how to grind out a game when things aren’t going our way and the results will come.

Discipline on the football field is something he strums into the playing group on a regular basis. In particular, the attitude of the players to the umpiring fraternity. That all went out the window when Benny closed one eye and put on his Magpie jumper to berate the umpires on Queen’s Birthday….in front of a nationwide audience. Come on Chappy, save that stuff for Joffa!

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 LALOR This week we take on Panton Hill.

FOOTBALL: Last weekend saw the return of some senior players that were injured or suspended over the past five weeks. It was just what the Bloods were needing going in against a top four side in Diamond Creek. They started the game off moving the ball quickly into their forward line, yet with bad kicking and steady pressure they only managed to kick two goals and nine points at the end of the first quarter. This gave the Bloods the opportunity to stay in the game and build their score in the second quarter. The boys kicked two goals to four and trailed by five goals going in at half time. Good signs from Benny Curtis having his first game in over 12 months was a highlight to the Bloods and the fact that the reserves had ten to pick from on the interchange also looked promising for the rest of the year, with the seniors eventually going down by 15 goals .

PANTON HILL This week we travel to Lalor.

THE CLUB: Was a testing weekend to say the least for the junior and the senior Panton Hill Football Club last round. Our little township is so very proud of its local sports teams, bouth footy and cricket, and the dedication of those fronting up each week to do their bit is reassuring. With this strength of character, we will get through the season and there are still some games ahead quite winnable for the Redbacks. Let’s look forward to those opportunities and let’s take a chance, let’s get the reward we need and deserve.

FOOTBALL: Certainly for the Senior club, it was disappointing and disheartening to have so many of our players sidelined with injury for a lot of this season culminating in 10 changes from the previous round where we’d had wholesale changes even then!

Subsequently, it was always going to be a battle when we needed to face one of the clear 2017 finals contenders in Lower Plenty. There were moments where had a bit of the footy and looked like we’d account for ourselves well but the obvious outright skill of the Bears was too much for us. What couldn’t be 28

should be the game of the round with both sides staring at the possibility of going down to third division. The Bloods are one up on Hill yet know the circumstances if they lose so expect a good tough game and support the boys in what will be a close one.

Yet I’m tipping the Bloods will come out victors.

AROUND THE CLUB: We have seen some funny moments in the past week, with big Ross the runner trying to come to grips with the coach telling him to pass on the message to players even if they are on the other side of the ground. And will someone tell Mocca that you need to turn the water off before you change a tap dripping wet and stuffing his back. Who would give this bloke a job?

SOCIAL: The club has an Old School Dress Up night tonight so don those old uniforms and show your style.

Should be a fun night.

SENIORS: One for the classics, had everything except a winner. Game ebbed and flowed where ourselves and the Stars had the ascendancy but neither could not nail it. The winner in the end was footy. Today against a good Lower Plenty side who owe us one and will be out to spoil our day so come ready to play.

DEVELOPMENT: Started off slowly but finished the game full of running, booting nine goals in the last to win by just over 100. Will be another test for the boys this afternoon with a chance to go top as incentive.

UNDER-19: Battled strongly against South Morang and with a few key players out and further injuries during the game can hold their head high.

Improvement is noticeable so stay positive as another win is not far off.

NETBALL: The ladies had more losses than wins last Friday evening 16 June, but nevertheless all sides are well placed to participate in September later in the year.

LOWER PLENTY This week we travel to North Heidelberg to take on the Bulldogs.

FOOTBALL: With the seniors coming off two big wins against Watsonia and Panton Hill, they head into a season defining stretch, playing the top three sides over the next three weeks. They are brimming with confidence and are welcoming the challenge. The club has been buzzing with both the under-19s and reserves still sitting on top of the ladder and really coming through with some promising talent pushing for spots in the senior side.

SOCIAL: This past Saturday saw a wonderful turnout for our Past Players’ Lunch where we saw three past players receive their 50-year membership cap.

Congratulations to Daryl Chidwell, Peter Lucas and Daryl Tripp. We’re expecting a similar turnout for our Black Tie formal event this Saturday. The Club has had fantastic success with its social events and hope this continues throughout the year.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 WATSONIA This week we host the Fitzroy Stars.

THE CLUB: Apologies first up to Micky Meagre’s mate whose phone call we rudely interrupted with the sides being read out last week. It won’t happen again.

SENIORS: Got off to a pretty good start against Thomastown last week for Moons, who was taking the reins in Big Dog’s absence. In fact, probably had a slight advantage in possession for the majority of the day. Unfortunately, we paid for any mistake we made, and there were quite a few. Get those skills right and the L would have been a W. Congrats to Fitzy who put in a solid showing in his first senior game. A poor performance against the Stars last time needs to be rectified today.

RESERVES: With the boys’ heads all over the place pregame due to absence of nail clippers or muffins we still managed to come out firing in the first half against one of the competition’s measuring sticks. Turnovers and some indecision in the second half had Thommo on top and ultimately run out victors. Two and a half good quarters isn’t going to get the job done boys.

FITZROY STARS This week we get a chance to visit Watsonia again to show how much we have grown as a unit.

SENIORS: What a game it was against North Heidelberg. It was frantic with both sides playing inspired football at times and some rubbish football in other periods. It was a spectators dream with Boomer playing well and looking after his brother Shane, who bagged eight. The Bulldogs jumped out to a three-goal lead after five minutes before three goals from Vas helped us re-group. In the second, Nungas was inspirational in the ruck, Mouse started to let go, Kain was tireless, Benji lead from the front while Maxy and the boys stood up down back. In the third term North obliterated us and we found ourselves five goals down with Nungas and Jacko gone for the game, but we rallied and kicked the next three. Three blokes cramping, twp tight hammies, and two out spelt trouble for the remaining players who were able to run.

Still we would not lie down and got 10 points ahead with five minutes to go. Some of North’s experienced heads stood up and they got back to even with a minute to go. We pushed forward again with the ball deep in our forward line when the siren sound. A rotten 38

UNDER-19: Copped a smacking in the return bout against Lower Plenty, who have improved a fair amount since the first game. Bounce back against South Morang today!

SHUFFLE NIGHT: The massive crowd that engulfed the rooms for last Saturday night’s function was the big positive of the week and everyone in attendance was more than happy to hand over the $20 for a song. The two standout costumes being Scotty’s Redfoo and Youngy’s Freddie Mercury, while Joel Murphy let everyone know that he had chips and gravy for lunch. The clock survived the night but Crawf’s drumstick did not.

RESERVES: With four guys again pulling out, the coach pulled on the boots while others filled in. The boys held on early but unfortunately North got going and started to put distance on the scoreboard. Jamaica had a breakout game with KB, Gordo and Dylan once again putting his hand up for senior selection. Ecca kicked three as well and I know that Flaggy is trying everything to get all our boys on the paddock because our full side has serious talent.

NETBALL: Had a terrific night with the first side fighting back from 10 goals down to overrun South Morang 47-38. The second side also had a stirring 37-28 victory over Macleod, while our third side struggled against Bundoora 24-32.

TOOL OF THE WEEK: The Rat Race management who were overawed by the big event. No checking of the racing machine, selling off a $500 dud mouse, getting belted on crown and anchor, even with Chrisco’s ban for competing as well as losing two mice in the aftermath.

Hoody will never come back to the joint and next time Luke, a little better preparation.

EPPING ENDS BEARS’ WINNING RUN

Despite being an underdog, Epping won an absolute thriller against Banyule by eight points at Epping Recreation Reserve in Round 9.

The game was tight throughout, but the Blues were just too good on the day in their best performance for 2017.

“Our intensity had been down but it was way back up again,” a happy Epping coach Greg Whitcroft said. “For the first time in a while we won the midfield battle and that got us going.”

Leigh Judd played his best game for the year for the Blues. With the Bears missing competition leading goal kicker James Kroussoratis, Sean Downes was their only multiple goal kicker with two.

Heidelberg West made the perfect start against Mernda at Waterview Recreation Reserve – leading 8.0 to nil at quarter-time.

The Hawks controlled the game thereafter to win by 67 points and atoned for their loss to the Demons at Heidelberg Park in the season opener.

The fourth-placed Hawks are a game ahead of Epping and Kilmore – both of whom have four wins. Mernda and Laurimar are two games away with two wins, while Reservoir remains winless, but, with good player numbers, the Mustangs’ reserves team has three wins.

The competition for top-four spots appears to have been reduced to six main chances – with Banyule and South Morang looking very safe for now and four teams going for the other two spots.

The byes and weeks off were coming thick and fast in the first part of the season, but now teams face a hard slog in the run to the finals.

Round 10 action sees Banyule looking to get straight back on the winners’ list when it hosts Mernda at R.J. Brockwell Oval.

The Demons face a huge task as they attempt to snap a six-game losing streak. The most recent clash between these teams, back in 2016, resulted in a one-kick result in favour of the Demons, but the Bears will be hot favourites to record their first-ever win over Mernda.

The game duration was cut to three quarters, with the final quarter not played after a lengthy delay following an injury to Hawk forward Zac Tranter late in the third term.

In a game that will help determine finals chances, Kilmore comes off the bye and plays its first game since June 3 in travelling to Heidelberg Park to tangle with Heidelberg West.

Ruckman Jarryd Coulson continues his fine season for Heidelberg West, while under-17 player Shannon Mills shone for Mernda.

The Hawks notched a massive 70-point win in the Round 2 encounter at J.J. Clancy Reserve and would be favoured to repeat the dose.

South Morang’s Tye Hall excelled as his team produced a seven-goal second term to put a space between themselves and St Mary’s at Whatmough Park. An even second half saw the Lions win by 38 points with the victory propelling the side to the top of the table.

If so, they will pull two games plus percentage ahead of Kilmore. But the Blues would draw level on five wins if they can pull off the upset.

The Burra were on five-game winning run and shooting for second place but now find themselves two games back, but still in third place.

Reservoir was within striking distance against Laurimar at half-time in its maiden voyage to Laurimar Reserve.

But a dominant second half gave the Power a big 64-point victory. Laurimar now sits two games and percentage ahead of the Mustangs, who are in last place.

Each team has now had one bye and the ladder is beginning to take shape. South Morang leads Banyule on percentage only – with both teams on seven wins.

Two games back is St Mary’s and Heidelberg West on five wins.

St Mary’s plays Laurimar for the second time – but this is the first meeting between these teams at Laurimar Reserve.

The Power have won their past two home matches, but they face much a stiffer task this week in hosting the Burra.

Their Round 5 meeting ended up in a 149-point win to St Mary’s. However, Laurimar’s form has improved since then.

Epping heads to Crispe Park with restored confidence to face Reservoir after knocking Banyule from the top of the ladder.

While the four points are important, the Blues also need a percentage boost as they try to climb into the top-four.

South Morang has the bye.

SENIORS: Unfortunately we weren’t able to match the perfect conditions for footy and despite a solid first quarter, which included a great running goal from Sean Downes, we turned in a disappointing performance thereafter. Poor skill execution was the enemy of any momentum that we tried to build throughout the afternoon and in the end, an eight-point loss masked a bigger gap between us and Epping, who certainly came to play. On the positives, Tom Cowey and Nick Biscontin defended the key posts admirably and were never beaten one-on-one, while Jacob Smith continued his recent run of good form. Devin McDonald tried his guts out in the middle, along with Riley Keath, while Matt Yarwood, Sean Downes and Scott Gumbleton battled hard all day. For the second week in a row, Jimmy Clark sacrificed his own game and did a great shut down job in the second half. In all, we learned plenty from the hit-out and look forward to rectifying a few things over the coming weeks. Epping 9.19 (73) def Banyule 9.11 (65). MERNDA What an odd day of footy.

SENIORS: First and foremost, it is gladdening to hear that Zach Tranter is okay after sustaining his back injury late in the third term, which forced the game to be called off at three-quarter-time. Our trainers have been commended for their efforts and we appreciated the message from Heidelberg West’s head trainer. Now to the game... oh dear. Rubbish start, conceded nine goals before we even looked like doing anything, and that was the difference in the end. Put simply, we had few winners on the day.

RESERVES: We kicked 6.16. In a 24-point loss, it speaks for itself. We really didn’t have too many answers to Kyl Ewart who kicked seven. Hammer played a good game despite having many numbers on him at times, and kicked three. Alex Halls and Earpy also impressed in their first game for the club.

NETBALL: Mernda 1 went down in a nail biter to St Mary’s, 20-21, while Mernda 2 was on the right end of a close one, beating Keon Park 31-29. Mernda 3, however, 42

RESERVES: This was a perfect day for football in a top-four clash which was another important game for us. Epping is one of the teams we need to beat if we are a chance of playing finals. Again we started off slowly and even though we had 70 percent of the ball, we just couldn’t get any goals on the board. With some changes at quarter time we looked a lot better. The fact that we started to run and switch the footy opened up the game and even though we were still struggling to hit targets, the game opened up with the faster ball movement to go into the half –time two points down.

The third quarter we started to take control with the two rucks Langers and Coulson starting to take control and giving our on-ballers first use out of the centre. It was a strong effort and went in eight points up. The last quarter we looked like we would run away with it, getting out to a 20-point lead halfway through but we started to take the foot off and let Epping back in, to hold on by six points. We need to run the game out and put away these side. One thing we can improve on is our kicking at goals. Kicking 15 points is not good enough. Best players were Harris, Langford, Hooper, Coulson, Glynn and Wells. Special mention to Smithy and Borgy, even though these two didn’t get a goal they did their job for the team.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 HEIDELBERG WEST This week we host Kilmore.

BUTTERWORTH THE WAIT: A great result for the club with the Butterworth Cup making its way to Heidelberg Park. An amazing start from the West boys with eight unanswered goals setting up what was a comfortable win. Mernda rallied in the second quarter, kicking four goals but our boys put the foot back on the pedal in the third to have a commanding lead at the final break. Unfortunately new recruit Zach Tranter came down heavily on his back in the last minute of the third quarter, fracturing a vertebrae and was unable to be moved until ambulance paramedics arrived. Zach is recovering well and thanks everybody for their messages. We also wish Ayden Kelly a speedy recovery who also dislocated his shoulder in the match.

It was a very proud moment for the club having the Butterworth Cup come to the rooms for all to enjoy.

RESERVES: The reserves also returned to the winners list with the returning Kyl Ewart becoming a handful for

KILMORE This week we return from the bye to take on Heidelberg West.

SENIORS: Laurimar made its first trip to JJ Clancy Reserve in Round 8. After our first encounter, we knew we would have to dig deep to come away with a win. Missing our captain, vice captain and centre half forward, we were forced to shuffle some positions and needed some guys to step up. Mick Marrett played a solid game off half back, Leigh Irons was yet again outstanding in the middle and Brandon Austin and Billy McKeown both kicked four goals up forward. We welcomed a much needed break to give our injured players a chance to recover and look forward to taking on Heidelberg West.

RESERVES: An all round impressive performance by every player on Saturday against Laurimar at home.

This was a game we focused strongly on, as we knew that our recent form would put us in a good position to get a win. We started strongly despite some inaccurate kicking but, the pressure, talk and intensity was outstanding all day. We’ve now achieved our goal of winning our first game in two years, since joining 44

the Mernda defenders, kicking seven goals.

NETBALLERS: Another week of mixed results with the ones winning and the twos narrowly losing after leading at half time. Our under-13 junior girls were the only team to make the finals, unfortunately they were defeated. The winter starts in four weeks and we have room for more girls. We have U11,U13 and U15s all welcome.

LADIES DAY: To all you ladies have a fun day and don’t have too many to drink. You all have chores you need to get done tomorrow.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Number 16 Harley Mozz has been a great inclusion to the Hawksnest. Part of the crew that crossed the road, he can do all, lots of touches and marks but yet to get a big bag of goals but maybe this week is his week.

KILMORE 1 NETBALL: Kilmore played Northcote Park in Round 8. The girls had a slow first quarter, being down by nine goals at quarter time. They picked up in the second quarter trailing by one goal. Emily Duke played a brilliant game in C, getting many intercepts through the mid court. We also hope her black eye is getting better. Amy George helped hold up our defensive end with some great intercepts around the ring, causing her player to make some mistakes. Well done Amy. It was great to see Caity and Bec trying some new strategies in the ring at times. Unfortunately Northcote Park proved to be too strong again. The girls will need to work hard at training the next few weeks and continue working as a team as they have some tough games ahead. Keep your heads up girls and keep working hard.

SENIORS: South Morang showed us that they are a strong contender with a well-balanced side. We showed some patches of really good football but once again weren’t able to sustain it. The game was lost in the second quarter as we let them pile on seven goals and control a comfortable leading margin. Although we kept pace in the second half the damage was done. On a brighter note congratulations to Leeroy who played his 100th senior game. It’s a shame we couldn’t get up for him.

RESERVES: These two teams have had some great hit outs over the past few years. It wasn’t ideal losing to South Morang on our own turf but hopefully we can use this loss as inspiration for the next meeting.

Credit to our boys who have been winning games consecutively for some time. I guess it’s time to start another streak of wins.

UNDER-19: This game was a real battle between two good teams. Our boys were looking for some revenge after being soundly beaten by Diamond Creek earlier in 46

the season. Diamo had the edge by the first half but a great third quarter with 8 goals kicked that saw us take a 20-point lead into the final quarter. Diamo came at us but the boys were able to stand up and get the job done. Well done to Mark Stanley as the acting coach.

NETBALL: Congrats to our Teal team who after a hard fought game beat Mernda currently sitting top of the ladder. We look forward to all three teams back on court to get the next three wins on the board.

SOCIAL: Our Ladies day was an enormous success.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 RESERVOIR This week we host Epping.

SENIORS: The boys went into the Laurimar game with really positive attitudes hoping to claim that elusive first win. We started off well and the first half was an arm wrestle with momentum swinging both ways. But the Power used their chances more effectively giving them advantage. After the main break our performance was poor. As always, the effort was there, but the lack of execution in critical moments really cost us. While we didn’t get the win our efforts were unwavering as usual and our boys are to be commended for continuing to hold their heads high and demonstrating respect and decorum in the eyes of defeat. Congratulations to Laurimar on winning the inaugural Jetts Cup. BEST: L. Shaw, E. Black, T. Crellin, H. Gordon, T. Goodwin, A. Lanning RESERVES: Having some much needed players return from injury this week, along with some new recruits joining the stable, helped give us the edge we’ve been missing over the last month. It was clear when we were challenged throughout the game as we were able to rotate through our bench giving us the fresh legs we’d been lacking. Although, bad kicking is bad football and we were lucky enough that it didn’t cost us the game

EPPING This week we are off to Crispe Park to take on Reservoir.

SENIORS: We played our first four-quarter game for the season. Our run and spread and intensity was so much better than recent weeks, it was great to see so many contributors. Our younger boys Corey, Billy, Dallyce and Jake all had very good games and we had no passengers.

RESERVES: If we continue to play selfish footy finals may well be out of our reach. You need to want to work hard both ways and to work hard for you team mates.

Boys, stop waiting for the usual blokes to put their head over the ball and lead from the front, do it yourselves.

NETBALL: Epping 1 – We have finally started to gel, with three wins in a row with two of those wins against the top side. Another great game right across the court. NORTHPARK NFLW - Review NORTHPARK NFLW REVIEW – ROUND 8

Playing fresh after a mid-season bye, Round 8 was a

consolidating one for many of the Northpark NFLW top teams as they strengthened their finals chances.

In Division 1, Diamond Creek Women’s reinforced its position in the top-four with a 15.12 (102) to 1.0 (6) win over Deer Park. After Deer Park kicked the opening goal of the match, Diamond Creek was able to dominate across the field and produce a strong allround performance. Nicole Hales was outstanding for the Creekers and Beth Cruickshank kicked four goals.

Chloe Portelli was the Lions only goal scorer.

The VU Western Spurs kept in touch with ladderleader Bendigo after a 14.8 (92) to 2.6 (18) victory over La Trobe University. The Spurs proved to be too potent for a La Trobe outfit who tried hard all day.

Mickayla Ward, who has been named one of the best for the Spurs in every game, continued her brilliant season, while Olivia Storer was also great. Kate Bond and Claudia Gunjaca continued to lead the way La Trobe.

Melbourne University won its third game on the trot with a 7.7 (49) to 2.7 (19) win over Kew. Only leading by nine points at three-quarter time, Melbourne University produced a four-goal last quarter to put the game out of reach. Elizabeth Keaney and Alexandra Gittings stood out for Melbourne University. The result keeps Melbourne University in fourth place, having now established a two-game and percentage gap on the fifth-placed Bears.

Bendigo showcased why it has yet to be defeated this season with a comprehensive 19.12 (126) to 2.5 (17) win over Whitehorse. Bendigo played fantastic throughout and a nine-goal last quarter put the finishing touches on its eighth-consecutive win. Tiahna Cochrane was outstanding for the Thunder and Kerryn Harrington was also terrific with six goals. Lucy Watkin and Kaitlin Richards were the Colts best.

Darebin pushed within one win of the top-five after it recorded its third victory of the season in a 11.9 (75) to 1.1 (7) result over Pascoe Vale. The Falcons led at every change but really stamped their authority after half time at Raeburn Reserve. Leading by five goals at the main break, the visitors piled on 6.2 to nil in the final

two quarters to run away with the 68-point result.

In Division 2, the VU Western Spurs continued their superb season, defeating bottom-placed La Trobe University 16.17 (103) to 0.0 (0) at Henry Turner Reserve. The Spurs’ strong performance sees them hold onto top position on the ladder with the highest percentage in the competition. Brittany Wunhym and Georgia Smith were brilliant for the Spurs and Nadine Rabah kicked six goals, taking her tally to 12 goals in three games.

In an important match-up for both sides, West Preston-Lakeside defeated Diamond Creek Women’s 4.11 (35) to 1.1 (7). The Roosters had control for much of the match but were unable to convert their scoring opportunities to goals until the final quarter, where they kicked away with three unanswered majors. Jessica Bamblett and Monique Dematteo continued their exceptional seasons for the Roosters, while Tiahn Cowan and Tayla Little were the Creekers best as their side slipped out of the top-five.

Darebin secured its seventh win of the season with a 6.7 (43) to 1.3 (9) away victory over Laurimar. The win ensures the third-placed Falcons remain only percentage away from the top position on the ladder and two games clear of fourth-placed South Morang.

Kristin Stensholt, Toni Alexandrow and Jem Wilson were all important in the Falcons’ 34-point win at Laurimar Reserve.

South Morang’s 13.15 (93) to 0.0 (0) victory over Whitehorse moved it a game clear in the top-four. The fast-starting Lions outfit added 4.6 (30) in the opening quarter and the Colts were unable to fight their way back into the match. Sarah Tarrant and Cassie Hurst were excellent for the Lions, who had five multiple goal kickers, while Ebony Jones was the Colts best for a second consecutive week.

Montmorency made it two wins in a row to jump into fifth-place on the ladder with a 7.10 (52) to 2.1 (13) win over Kew. After a close first half, which saw the Magpies take only a four-point lead into half-time, the home side kicked away and proved to be too strong for the Bears. Ashleigh Bayes was superb and Sian Capito kicked four goals for the Magpies. Danielle Gills was fantastic once again for Kew, while Alexandra Monteiro also tried hard for her team.

NETBALL News Section 2 Round 9: North Heidelberg 2 vs Ivanhoe 1 North Heidelberg 2 dropped to second place on the

Section 2 ladder after Ivanhoe 1 caused an upset to end the Bulldogs winning streak in Round 9.

The 41-27 result helped Ivanhoe move up to third place on the ladder with its fourth triumph of the season.

Coming out of the gates, Ivanhoe proved more than competitive as it stayed neck and neck with the side that lead the table after eight rounds.

Defensive pressure by Jessica Dao and Amanda Rothwell-Hiscock of North Heidelberg forced errors upon Ivanhoe as they looked to move the ball into their shooting third.

However, Ivanhoe stayed just as tight, keeping up with North Heidelberg who was held down in its scoring end and as the quarter neared its end the scores remained level.

Both Ivanhoe and North Heidelberg looked determined to end the term on on top but as the second quarter began it was Ivanhoe who took charge.

Ivanhoe moved skilfully around the court, passing the ball with precision to make its way down to the shooters. Maddie Seeley and Leanna Santori gave Ivanhoe its push in front of North Heidelberg, as the two shooters increased their team’s score.

Ivanhoe took a five-goal lead into half-time, however it was North Heidelberg who started the third quarter with confidence as it scored a few goals to cut into the deficit. The Bulldogs’ defensive pressure forced Ivanhoe to look back into its centre third for options. This caused Ivanhoe to make bad pass decisions and lose possession of the netball.

However, Ivanhoe gradually got back on top, forcing turnovers and getting the netball to its attacking third.

By the end of the third term Ivanhoe had opened up a 34-24 advantage. In the fourth quarter, centre Olivia Marian and WA Ebyan Cabdi worked around the circle to give shooters Seeley and Santori a chance to move in front of their defenders and closer into goals.

North Heidelberg started to crack as its deficit continued to increase. The Bulldogs wasted a turnover by passing directly back to an Ivanhoe player and also missed a number of rebounds which gave Ivanhoe more time with the ball.

While North Heidelberg’s defensive line worked tirelessly to force shooters to pass out and for their

attackers to look back, they couldn’t reduce the margin that Ivanhoe had created.

Section 3 Round 9: Ivanhoe 2 vs Heat 1 Heat 1 moved up to first place on the Section 3 ladder

after it convincingly defeated Ivanhoe 2 in Round 9.

The first half of the match was very tight before Heat got on top in the second half.

Ivanhoe was first on the board with two goals but Heat kept up the pace and put in its first goal before soon after earning possession from an out ball by Ivanhoe.

Ivanhoe forced the Heat shooters deep in the shooting circle, with the pressure causing Heat GS Michelle Kneale and GA Crystal Phillips to work hard to make position.

The Ivanhoe girls make some solid plays late in the first term, feeding neat passes to their shooters to head into the quarter-time break two goals ahead.

The scoreboard during the second term was just as tight after Heat started the quarter out strongly, scoring two goals to tie the scores.

The Heat girls ran freely around the court, opening up the game as they found empty space all over the court. They took the lead for the first time in the game, however Ivanhoe didn’t let it last too long before it picked up its play again.

With scores tied at 14-apiece, late goals to Kneale and Phillips gave Heat back the lead moving into the second half.

The third quarter was where Heat came together as a team and took truly control of the match.

Defenders Alana Keith and Cassie Wilcox pressured Ivanhoe shooters superbly and started chains of play from their defensive third. This started their side on a shooting streak, getting further ahead while keeping Ivanhoe at bay.

By the end of the third term Heat led 28-18 as Ivanhoe’s shooters struggled to get quality supply into their shooting circle.

The final quarter was again controlled by Heat as Ivanhoe found it difficult to hold onto possession with the amount of intensity Heat put into the game.

Heat’s lead only increased as the game advanced, with Ivanhoe not being able to score more than two goals for the quarter as Heat ran away with a 21-goal win.

VIC METRO SQUADS Congratulations to the all the Knights who took part in Vic Metro teams over the weekend. Captain Nick Coffield, Jack Petruccelle, Patrick Naish and Ethan Penrith played in Metro’s win against Western Australia.

Knights Girls Maddy Guerin, Neve O’Connor and Maddy Brancatisano all took part in the first ever Vic Metro v Vic Country NAB AFLW Under-18 game. While Sarah Sansonetti, Gabrielle Newton, Nell Morris-Dalton and Britney Gutknecht all took part in the U16s girls game.
