I am reminded of a children’s book called The Quiltmaker’s Gift by Jeff Brumbeau.

It tells the story of a king who had so many things that he kept lists of the things that he owned, so as not to forget them, but was still not happy. He hears of a quiltmaker who makes the most beautiful quilts and decides that a quilt must be the one thing he needs to be happy. He tries to buy one but she is unwilling to sell; her quilts are gifts only for the poor and needy. She tells him he must first give away all his possessions, and then, when he is truly poor and needy she will gift him a quilt. The king resists and then eventually determines there is no other way, so he begins to give away his possessions. It is difficult at first but after giving away a few things he decides it feels so good that he begins a journey around the world giving away everything he owns. There are beautiful pictures of the king, happy as can be, experiencing the happiness of the people around the world enjoying his gifts.

All this time the quiltmaker, true to her word, is piecing together the most intricate, gorgeous quilt. As the king gives away his last possession, she gifts him the quilt and he is astonished, for he feels neither poor nor needy. He has finally found joy, through generosity.

The theme of our fall stewardship initiative is just that: Joy through Generosity. I invite you to join me on a journey this fall where we will explore the biblical roots of giving our first fruits, Jesus’ teaching on money, and share the results of a life shaped around intentional giving: a deeper relationship with God, a mindset of abundance, an others-focused worldview. In short, JOY achieved through GENEROSITY. My own journey in exploring these concepts has led me to recognize the difference between a mindset of abundance and a mindset of scarcity. Generous people almost always possess a mindset of abundance. They believe they have more than enough to share with others. One of the character traits I most admire in my husband is his generous spirit, and I was drawn to that because, I think, it is so opposite of my own natural tendencies. Through much prayer and reflection, I realized I possess a scarcity mindset, even though this is not at all an accurate reflection of my circumstances. Rather, it is rooted in the fear that I won’t have enough.

Living from a scarcity mindset, I think I am being careful, prudent, and in control. This is all an illusion; in reality fear has control of me. How does one with a scarcity mindset regain control?

It isn’t about somehow fearing less, but rather trusting God more. God promises to take care of all my needs, and God has always been faithful to fulfill

God’s promises. When I can rest in this truth, I am freed from the anxiety of a scarcity mindset and enabled to find joy through generosity.

Normandale Lutheran Church consists of an extremely generous group of people. This is a fact evident in the incredible success of our most recent capital campaign, All Together in One Place, where we revamped our building to increase a sense of connection through community gatherings and added a chapel to enhance the experience of worship in new ways, as well as benefited the greater global community through our Center for Spirituality and the Arts and our Community Health programs in India. True to the tradition of outreach at Normandale, almost 20% of our annual $2.8 million dollar budget goes outside our walls to improve the lives of people in our local community as well as global partners in Peru and India. Are you experiencing joy through this generosity? As members of Normandale Lutheran Church we have adopted this mission statement: Led by the Holy Spirit and living in God’s grace, Normandale Lutheran Church is a community proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ through love, learning, worship and service.

And yet, only 53% of our membership is currently giving intentionally to support the mission of Normandale Lutheran Church.

Our stewardship committee has set a goal to increase this number to 85% of our members giving intentionally to support Normandale and accomplish this mission. This goal is not set because we are short on cash or struggling with our budget! As it happens, our budget is frequently balanced due to a large amount of “unpledged” or you may say, “unplanned” giving.

This is giving that comes from many non-members, and also members, who have not gone through the process of intentionally communicating their giving to our business office. We receive it gratefully, but are not aware ahead of time that it is planned. This planning process obviously benefits the Church Council because we are able to more accurately develop a budget for programming and building expenses, but it also benefits the giver as well- it is actually rooted in the biblical teaching of first fruits, which we will explore more together this fall. The goal of having 85% of our members giving intentionally is about discipleship; aligning our financial lives with biblical truths and experiencing more of God. Will you join us to achieve this goal? As followers of Jesus, we have been promised abundant life.

Let’s discover the abundance already surrounding us and with grateful hearts experience it together.

As I journaled my thoughts through sabbatical this past summer, it seemed fitting to share some with you. On the following pages, you will find the beginning and the ending of my reflections, bookends, if you will, that mark a winding journey through my soul.

In every human soul there is a void, that will not be filled, until we rest in God.

A new day begins. It is quiet and peaceful, which slows me down. It feels like a journey from pace to no pace, whereby doing becomes being and time disappears, where one moment is just like the last and the next, and clocks and calendars give way to the truth of time; day and night, morning and afternoon, light and darkness. Today the sun becomes my guide, marking the movement of time in the good order of creation, untainted by human “development,” a notion that allows one thing to replace something more beautiful.

Sabbath is the land of our souls, where we are reconnected to the creator.

Must I be sick, in order to stop.

Must I be downtrodden, in order to seek joy.

Must I be exhausted, in order to rest.

Must I be lost, in order to look up.

Must I be doing, in order to have value.

Must I be productive, in order to prove worth.

It seems the Creator gives permission to be; to live freely and with joy in the divine dance of Sabbath, where work, toil, worry, and fear are forgotten for a time in the Creator’s voice, “You are my beloved, and with you I am well-pleased.”

O God, pick me up by the scuff of the neck and carry me to the land of Sabbath, where I will rest in you.

This is the day that God has made. We will be joyful and glad in it. We will release more “civilized” conventions for the truth of creation. The sun rises, the birds sing, the trees whisper, and my soul finds companionship in all of it. In that is gladness enough for a grand celebration, quietly dancing within me.

Our precious dog, Zoe, has come along for the journey. She is finding her way into the same sabbath rest, breathing in the surrounding quiet. She has been welcomed into storefronts and restaurants, panted in the backseat kennel of her travels, and marked her pathway with the smells from her bladder. She looks for Lisa, whenever she is absent, if only for a brief time. Lisa is her sun, her guide, her source for orientation and security. She turns toward Lisa, as a flower to solar energy, leaning and stretching to meet her. It is beautiful to watch.

The quiet does something remarkable. Creation’s design has a placidness rarely encountered in the world today. It carries thought to new depth and dimension, even giving me notice of the slight ringing inside my ears. Perhaps the repetitive exercise of quiet will instill in us the muscle memory of peace, whereby the sound of the loon becomes the three-fold amen to my soul.

As sabbath begins, the rabbi reminds the people, “You were created for freedom and for rest.”

August 31 Last day of the month…last day before Labor Day Weekend, last weekend of sabbatical…oh boy, what now? Soul at odds with itself, caught between stopping and restarting, wondering if restarting can happen.

I was listening to an interview with Neil Simon, author and playwright, who died last Sunday at the age of 91.

The interview was held in 1996 with Terri Gross from NPR’s “Fresh Air.” He said something about being a writer that struck me, that “There are really two sides to me that are at odds with each other. There is the writer who is a very solitary person, who walks alone into the vast canyon of interior language, and there is the relational me who spends time deeply in love with my children, my wife, my friends, the social self who engages with joy.”

I identify with that conflict.

To be a pastor is to think about the unknowable, speak about the wordless, and have conversations with silence.

To be a pastor is to allow human projections that defy reason, expectations that I will be more than what and who I am.

To be a pastor is to fumble my way along in suffering, headlong into pain, knowing full well my presence is insufficient to the need.

In Pat Conroy’s novel, “South of Broad,” the protagonist, Leo King, is in deep conversation with his high-school crush, Molly Rutledge, both approaching 40 years-old, and as they wrestle with how their lives arrived where they are, and why they have encountered so much pain and failure, Molly says, “Because we’re human. And the older we get, the more human we get. And the more human we get, the more painful everything becomes.”

We have made religion, even faith, about knowing more than we can possibly know. It seems to me that it is about being human, more human; aware of our vulnerability, our weakness, our mortality. Aware of our need for each other. Aware that we are not God, that we will all die, and that in between birth and death is the art of being human, beautifully flawed and wonderfully awkward.

Even as I write, I wrestle with myself over the presentation of the words I form, even if nobody ever reads them, which is so very human. When face to face, eye to eye with another, is not the interior question we hold, “Will you accept, affirm, not harm, and even love me?” Not love in the warm fuzzy feeling of my innate goodness, but in your tender acceptance of my presence before you.

Can I just be here, and will that be enough for you?

To be a pastor is to risk getting up in front of others and opening one’s my mouth, with words that portray the inner workings of the human struggle. Who are we and why are we here? Is today really the only day I get to live?

Is there meaning to my existence, and if so, how do I discern that meaning and live nearer to it? And will my relationships reflect a love so far above and beyond me, that all will know their own intrinsic human value?

Will God show up?

As pop star Jason Mraz reminds, “Love is the answer to all of your questions.” Because I am older, I will add “suffering” to that “love.”

How easy and how deeply difficult that is!

We at Normandale have a magnificent pipe organ, a dynamic force that breathes life and energy into our worship. Some of us were first attracted to this congregation because of it – the way it helps us to raise our best voices in joy and praise, the way it opens our hearts to contemplation and prayer.

Built in 1970 by the Schlicker Organ Company, and serving our church well for the past 20 years, our organ is among the most outstanding instruments in the Twin Cities! Highly valued with a replacement cost of $3.5 million, this pipe organ is an important asset. At this point, however, it is in need of extensive renovation. Despite regular maintenance, signs of its dysfunction are beginning to show.

The NLC Organ Restoration Project will enable us to bring our instrument up to its full potential. Many of its aging components will be repaired or replaced: pistons, controls, stops, couplets, keyboards, slider motors, and wind chests. The entire electrical system and the failing fiber optics system will also be replaced. The smaller antiphonal organ, which has not been in working condition, will be restored. All 4,000 pipes, large and small, will be dismantled, cleaned and adjusted. And finally, the instrument will be completely reassembled and voiced to perform at its best in our sanctuary.

The restoration work will be carried out by the Dobson Pipe Organ Builders, with John Ferguson, our interim organist, sharing his experience and expertise. The cost of the project is set at $511,807, with a signed contract and a start date of Easter Monday, April 22, 2019. The organ will lead our worship again on Pentecost Sunday, June 9, 2019. Our initial investment of $330,000 in 1999 and subsequent maintenance, voicing and repair has increased the total spent to $410,000. Adding these figures together shows a total expenditure of considerably below $1 million, far less than the value of the instrument or the estimated cost of purchasing a new organ. As we at Normandale preserve, renew, and care for what we have, we become good stewards of the legacy we have inherited.

Over the next few months, you will hear more about how to participate with your gift or pledge. Your contributions will ensure that our amazing pipe organ can continue to enrich our life as a worshipping community both now and in the future. You will be providing Joy For Generations to come!

When Jesus healed the blind man at Bethsaida (Mark 8:22-26), he took saliva from his mouth and touched it to the man’s eyes.

From the DNA of Jesus, across generations of family, he mustered up all he had for the healing to come. When Jesus asked the man, “Can you see anything?”

And the man looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees walking.” Then Jesus touched his eyes again; and the man looked with intent and his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.

Vision is a funny thing. It seems to come and go, a ping-pong game between clarity and uncertainty. We look into the future, even pray for God’s input, and yet it never turns out the way we plan.

Things shift, times change, and factors far beyond our control wobble.

We have vision, but it might look like trees walking.

As a people, a congregation bearing the name Normandale Lutheran Church, we seek to discern what God is asking of us, that our being together for the ministry we share is of God’s will. We invite the Holy Spirit, even begin our mission statement with “Led by the Holy Spirit…” And then we engage in open conversation with one another, trusting the collective voice of our people, that in it all, as we listen, sift, and gather, God’s holy direction will emerge.

“Can you see anything?” Jesus asks.

At times it appears like trees walking.

This is how effective community works. When we listen well to one another, we grow together in holy unity.

When we listen well to one another, we see beyond our differences to our common humanity. When we listen well to one another, the vision of God gains clarity.

From a voice not our own, by a Spirit far greater, from a suffering Savior of a profound love, we will walk together in faith. Vision rarely comes in a moment, but rather emerges over time in a people who wait patiently, listen intently, and trust mightily.

Over the past five years, we have embraced our vision for All Together in One Place, a comprehensive campaign designed to: 1) Repurpose our facility as a tool for mission, 2) Prepare the soil for the next generation in congregational life, and 3) Provide sustenance and growth to our Outreach and Mission ministries.

Across the years, with one year to go, we are meeting that vision with our generosity, prayer, and faithfulness.

We have prayed, talked with and listened to one another, and invited God’s leading throughout.

And now, it is time to begin the process of recasting the vision, lurching forward together into the next five years of our life together.

Over the next fifteen months, a representative team of our people will seek to give reply to Jesus’ question. We will rely upon the touch of Jesus, born out in connection to community conversation, listening well to all generations, seeking to understand past, present, and future.

The team will engage you in your discernment, ask for your prayer, and invite you into a broader conversation.

For all that is behind us, “thanks be to God.” For all that is yet to come, “Yes, yes, yes!”

Providing Comfort: Sew-Day Quilting Makes Lutheran World Relief Mission Quilts

You may be the person who dropped off the “Donation for Judy” box at the church. I opened it and found hand sewn unfinished quilt pieces. The cover went back on the box and the box spent time on the Sew-Day shelf in the church storage room. In the spring, the box went into a plastic tub and spent the summer on our porch. Looking at the tub, knowing the box was inside, gave me an “I can’t deal with that” feeling. I did not want to tackle your mothers or grandmothers unfinished projects. I had too many of my own.

Yet September came, and I cleaned up our porch. I opened the box and found a triangle hand sewn piece with cute embroidered animals, log cabin squares, and much more. I decided to get to work. I worked to zig-zag the triangle piece to batting to make a more sturdy quilt. The box held fabric to finish it off into a mission-sized quilt.

The log cabin pieces were sewn onto batting and squared off. Again, the box held enough fabric to finish it. The embroidery was secured with interface on the back. The box didn’t hold coordinating fabric, but my stash and JoAnn’s did. And the box still holds leftovers that will eventually make a scrappy top.

What did I learn from your box? Maybe avoiding the box was worse than opening the box. Once I began to solve the problems of how to use the hand sewn pieces for a sturdy utility quilt, the tops were quickly sewn and I had fun repurposing the hand sewn work done by your mother or grandmother. Best of all? You can know that someone, somewhere will be sleeping under a soon-to-be completed Lutheran World Relief Mission quilt.

A New Role at Normandale For over a year, Carrie Kilberg has been our church on site Funeral Coordinator. It seemed a natural fit to also take on this role after serving as Wedding Coordinator for 20 years.

Carrie is a detailed-oriented person who offers tremendous support and hospitality to families, whether planning a wedding ceremony or celebration of life.
