Six years ago, Charlie decided to pass the tradition on to his daughter. He made sure the recipe was followed to his exact requirements, watching over his daughter who was soon reaching the level of a master chef. It wasn't long after that Charlie passed away, but the tradition has lived on with his daughter. She is now putting the same passion into the baking of the Christmas Cakes as her father did for some 70 years!

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

I always enjoy conversations with Randy at our monthly gettogethers. You just never know where our minds will wander, and which music topic will enter the fray. Well, this month we got to chatting about Christmas traditions, and Randy told me the history of the Charlie Robertson Christmas Cake.

So, who is this beautiful woman who has carried on the tradition? Well, it is none other than Charlaine Halmo, and now you know the rest of the Christmas Cake story! UPCOMING EVENTS Simcoe Royal Canadian Legion BR.79 New Year's Eve Dance Party (not just 50's 60's 70's!)

LUNCHEON

The Christmas season is fast approaching with thoughts of tree trimming, wreath hanging, sugar plums and Rudolph. Since September, the Port Dover Community Christmas Luncheon Committee has been planning for this year’s 6th Annual Community Christmas Luncheon. This special event will be held Tuesday, December 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Port Dover Community Centre. Once again, the Committee will be serving a homemade turkey dinner complete with dressing, gravy, potatoes, squash, vegetables, coleslaw and dessert. There will also be pork roast, apple sauce and apple cider on the menu. The doors are open for anyone who would like to attend this free event. You may have held your family dinner on a different date and would like to join in on the community luncheon. You may be alone this year. You may not be into cooking a big turkey dinner for a small number. Finances may be a little tighter this year than usual. EVERYONE is welcome!

TAKE A HIKE - PART ONE -

“Not all who wander are lost.” “Some days I feel like quitting and going home. Then breath-taking moments like these remind me that I’m already home.” - Heather Anderson Heather Anderson grew up in rural Michigan. She was overweight, didn’t like to exercise and was teased by classmates. She suffered from anxiety, had a poor self-image and was scared of animals and of going to the bathroom alone at night. Somehow, one day, as a teenager, she decided, immediately, to change and seek out things she was afraid of doing. Studying to be a minister, after her first year of college, this new approach led Heather to the Grand Canyon. She got a job as a chambermaid and occasionally led night worship services. Anderson had never gone hiking before, but on her first day, she and her roommates set out, in 120 degree heat, to hike down the Canyon. All but one of the others turned back before reaching the canyon floor, but Heather was determined to stay with the one who kept going, a collegiate basketball player. They made it the 4.5 miles down to the bottom. Heather Anderson wasn’t just a hiking rookie, she was 70 pounds overweight and had spent the previous night at the airport, not sleeping. As well, she had blood poisoning from stepping on a rusty fence a week earlier. Heather felt like she was going to die from the effort and the heat. But the two girls made it back up to the top together. Anderson spent the rest of the summer hiking in and out of the canyon, starting after work and often walking until 3 am, then sleeping for a few hours before the beginning of the work day. That summer changed her. She set a new goal for herself. Upon graduation, she headed out on her own to hike the Appalachian Trail, the iconic 2200 mile footpath from Georgia to Maine. Heather adopted the trail name Anish, naming herself after her great, great grandmother and walked from dawn to dusk, 20 to 30 miles daily.

In the process, she was changing into a completely new person. From being a shy, fearful and introverted bookworm, disinclined to spend time outdoors, she had now transformed herself into a self-confident and independent young woman, athletic and unafraid, able to take care of herself and live in the woods on her own. Anish completed the Appalachian Trail, the major trail of the eastern United States, in four months. During the next few years, she also completed thru-hikes of the Continental Divide Trail, down the middle of the country, and the Pacific Coast Trail on the west coast. Then she tried to settle down, marrying and taking a position at a software company. However she had difficulty adjusting to that style of life. Heather spent five years trying to make it work, before coming to the conclusion that she didn’t need to fix herself, there was nothing wrong with her. Anish decided to follow her dream. She got divorced, quit her job, took a bus to southern Oregon from Washington State and started walking toward the Canadian border. By the time she finished, she was feeling whole again. A new goal emerged – the fastest known time for the PCT. Specifically, Heather Anderson wanted to break the record for the fastest self-supported hike from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Coast Trail. No women’s best existed so she would aim for the men’s record of 64 days. The effort entailed travelling 40 miles a day with no rest days. She would get up at 5 am daily and walk until 9 or 10 pm. One night she had to ford a glacial river because a bridge had washed out. Campers nearby told her it was too dangerous with the night-time higher water and faster currents, but she went anyway as she still had more miles to complete that day. About 2000 miles into her hike, with 650 miles to go, problems began to arise. Her legs started to buckle and low blood sugar swings were making her woozy. In The Long Run Proudly Sponsored By

Once again, her determination shone through. She told herself to eat a lot more food and see if that would solve the issue. Anderson made herself eat dinner every night – tuna packets with bagels or dehydrated refried beans mixed with water. Sometimes Anish was so tired that she would wake up with her headlamp still on and a half-eaten meal beside her. She made it to the Canadian border, by herself, in 60 days, a new PCT record. Two years later, in 2015, she hiked the Appalachian Trail again, this time in 54 days, four days faster than had ever been done before by a man or woman. Heather Anderson had definitely conquered her fears and insecurities. This year (2018) marks the fiftieth anniversary of the United States national trails system and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Anderson made plans for this year. In order to honour the anniversary, she decided to attempt to hike the three major trails provided for in the act: the Appalachian Trail (3380 km), the Pacific Coast Trail (4184 km) and the Continental Divide Trail (4828 km). The total would be over 7000 miles and she calculated that it would take 8 to 9 months. In Part 2, I will describe some of the highlights of this incredible endeavour, undertaken by a 35 year old woman who, fifteen years ago, was completely nonathletic and had never been on a hike.

LARRY MELLORS

DRESSING FOR

WINTER

We have all read articles about how we as humans should dress for cold weather fishing. In today’s world, it is all about layering. The products available to us are overwhelming. But what about the fishing equipment we use, whether it be rods, reels, tackle, lines and boats and motors? Also, the research avenues available on-line can assist in having a better day in the outdoors. By better, I am referring to safety and fishing conditions derived from water and air temperature; barometric pressure; water flows; turbidity and more. Let’s start with the fishing equipment we use. When it is extremely cold, ice can form in the guides on the fishing rod. When reeling in line, water is brought into the guides and thus forms ice when the air temperature is below 0˚ Celsius. We can constantly break the ice free by the use of your hands. This will allow us to cast easier. There are products on the market which you can apply to the guides. Depending on the air temperature ice build-up can be eliminated altogether or at least minimalized. But on extremely cold days, the inevitable happens even when applying the paste – frozen guides. Most of these de-ice products must be applied the day before your fishing trip. Fishing reels are affected by extreme cold weather. Incorrect application of oil and grease can severely affect the smooth operation of the reel. Many anglers use a lubricant they may already have without considering whether it is correct for fishing reels. I truly recommend purchasing oil/grease made specifically for fishing reels. This will ensure the smooth operation of the reel under hot and cold weather conditions. Before heading out in the cold weather, whether on open water or ice, make sure your reels have been cleaned and lubricated. The fishing line you choose may also be affected by cold weather and cold water temperature. If the line is not suited for cold water and air conditions this could result in the line not being as soft and limp as it should be, therefore resulting in twisted, curled loops. I cannot stress enough about the maintenance of the boat and motor. If you are doing late season fishing it is a must to ensure everything is working perfectly. This is not the time to be thinking, “I hope the engine starts.” There is very little marine traffic at this time of the year if you have an emergency. There are many websites available to provide the educated angler with the necessary information to provide guidance in regards to safety issues, weather information and possible angler success - although no one can ever predict whether it will be a successful day of fishing. And everyone’s measure of success is different. Always check weather forecasts. These will dictate road conditions and the conditions you will face on the water. For instance, if there are 70 km winds, casting will be extremely difficult, let alone line control when your bait offering is in the water. If you are fishing in flowing water, make sure your wading conditions are safe. I know on all the rivers I fish, the cubic metres per second (cms) that make for unsafe wading. In other words, stay out of the river! In flowing water, if the water is rising, generally fish do not bite. In rising water, serving Lake erie Boaters the fish are uncomfortable and are constantly seeking quiet for over 60 years water. The last thing on their mind is food. Review the flow charts and wait for falling water. Although not scientifically proven, rising barometric pressure is felt to provide better fishing than falling barometric pressure. Make the most of the “Window of Opportunity” that all of this information provides. Late fall, early winter and winter can provide excellent fishing opportunities. Check the recreational fishing regulations for specific fishing opportunities in the area you are headed. One thing for sure, the air is always fresh. Dress warm and make safety paramount. PANORAMA TIME IS HERE!

By: Dave Scott

With the lights turned on, thousands of visitors are preparing for their annual visit to the Simcoe Panorama to take in the cascade of multicoloured lights and wander around the festive displays. I thought it a perfect time to reflect on a friend of mine who started helping out with the lights way back in 1959. Over the years, Vic Gibbons has been involved in many different aspects of the Panorama. Vic shared a story with me of him standing atop the hydro pole in the early days waiting for the word to flip the switch (hoping it worked) to illuminate the park. He was involved in the building of displays and of course like everyone, stringing bulbs. In 1992 Vic donated the proceeds from 200 Cottontail prints to the Panorama. The money was then used to purchase a fountain for Lake George. For the 40th anniversary of the Panorama, in 1998, Vic made another large donation of 64 Cottontail and 130 Cardinal prints to help raise funds for Panorama fountain lights. Over the years Vic has donated time and art all in the name of keeping the Panorama strong. It is one of the aspects of his life that has been a constant, from those early years to the present. The Panorama will always hold special memories for Vic. Vic is just one of the many folks over the years who have given their time to help maintain such a high-quality event. Remember this holiday season to take the time to say thank you to these wonderful volunteers who keep the tradition alive for families all over Southern Ontario to enjoy!

UNDERSTANDING. By: Dave Scott

An opportunity came Hub Media's way back in October. So, Chris Atkins (best cameraman around), Joel Easy (2nd best cameraman around) and I decided to take up the challenge presented to us. Our mission, if we chose to accept it, was to film all five political debates in Norfolk County. The good folks at Folkin' Vote hired us, and I've got to tell you, it was very interesting! First off, the number of folks that took the time to watch the debates, which were two to three hours long, were incredible. I think the total for all the debates was over 40,000 Facebook views alone! The turnouts at all of the venues were the best ever according to local organisers. The crowds were respectful to the candidates, but at the same time held nothing back if they felt someone may have been leading them astray. It was great to see such a deep interest in voting again and democracy working for the people at large. I do think our politicians need to reconnect with the everyday person in Norfolk County. When I first watched Russell Colebrook, who was running for mayor (Russell’s a cab driver in Simcoe and lives in Renton), I realised his message was just that, remember the hard-working poor and listen to what they are saying. I have to admit Russell was a breath of fresh air in the debates. He reminded folks that no one has all of the answers and we need to help each other. He injected his sense of humour about his long hair, marijuana and fence-sitting into the race and made folks think more openly about the problems facing Norfolk today. Russell showed his emotional side, getting a little choked up, telling the story of an 18-year-old who was voting for the first time and said he would vote for Russell because he was “REAL.” Russell said that one vote made it all worthwhile, that if one person understood his message of equality for all, then he had done his job. As the debate videos were released, folks were waiting to see what analogy would be in his next speech. He didn’t disappoint, and he never took himself too seriously. He just seemed to roll with it! As you know, Russell didn’t win the mayor’s position, but perhaps he enlightened more people than we realise. There is a common, everyday, personal thread in us that connects to who Russell is, we can relate to the struggles of life and still smile and hope for a better tomorrow!

NEW TREATMENT PROGRAMS This is an exciting time at Great Lakes Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine as we are introducing two new programs! Starting December 1, 2018 we will now be offering treatment for Concussions in both locations and Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy at our Delhi Clinic. A concussion is a form of brain injury resulting from a direct or indirect blow to the head, face or jaw causing an alteration in brain function. Concussions can produce a wide array of symptoms which pose a challenge for coaches, trainers, parents and health professionals involved in the care of an injured person. The four Pillars of Concussion care include Education, Prevention, Management and Research. At The Ontario Balance Centre, we can assist in the Education, Prevention, and have a great interest in the Management of a concussion. Our program includes the assessment, education and treatment including Rest Strategies, School/Work Modification, Monitoring and Rehabilitation Techniques. We work closely with the referring Physician keeping them informed of the progression so that they can make an educated decision regarding care. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy in our Delhi location is of benefit to people with urinary incontinence (UI) and/or pelvic floor prolapse (POP). Both males and females can be affected by UI, such as after Prostate Surgery in men or Childbirth/Aging-related concerns in women. POP often occurs in women, and the treatment is very effective in regards to the education and treatment of the symptomology. We are very excited to introduce these two new programs here at Great Lakes Physiotherapy and The Ontario Balance Centre. We wish you a very Merry Christmas, and the happiest of New Years and look forward to seeing you if you need our services! Jeff Scott RPT, Kin, CAFCI, MCPA

STRESS, DEPRESSION AND THE HOLIDAYS TIPS FOR COPING Stress and depression can ruin your holidays and hurt your health. Being realistic, planning ahead and seeking support can help ward off stress and depression. The holiday season often brings unwelcome guests — stress and depression. And it's no wonder. The holidays come with some big demands — parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining, to name just a few. But with some practical tips, you can minimise the stress that accompanies the holidays. You may even end up enjoying the holidays more than you thought you would. TIPS TO PREVENT HOLIDAY STRESS AND DEPRESSION When stress is at its peak, it's hard to stop and regroup. Try to prevent stress and depression in the first place, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past. 1. Acknowledge your feelings. If someone close to you has recently died or you can't be with loved ones, or you are alone for the holidays, realise that it's normal to feel sadness and grief. It's okay to take time to cry or express your feelings. You can't force yourself to be happy just because it's the holiday season. 2. Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events. They can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships. 3. Be realistic. The holidays don't have to be perfect or just like last year. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones. 4. Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. 5. Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Remember, it’s the thought that counts. 6. Plan ahead. Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. 7. Learn to say no. Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed. 8. Don't abandon healthy habits. Don't let the holidays become a freefor-all. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. 9. Take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm. 10. Seek professional help if you need it. Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling sad or anxious. If these feelings last for a while, talk to your doctor or mental health professional. Take control of the holidays. Don't let the holidays become something you dread. Instead, take steps to prevent the stress and depression that can descend during the holidays. Learn to recognise your holiday triggers, such as financial pressures or personal demands, so you can combat them before they lead to a meltdown. With a little planning and some positive thinking, you can find peace and joy during the holidays. WHY SHOULD YOU SEE A CHIROPRACTOR IN THE WINTER? COLD WEATHER AND JOINT PAIN A lot of you are already experiencing joint pain, be it neck pain, achy knees shoulders etc., know that the cold weather can lead to further pain and discomfort. A major reason this occurs is barometric or atmospheric pressure. When the air gets colder, the fluid we have in our joints (synovial fluid) moves less freely. Usually, it acts to lubricate the joint and help it function properly. However, when the weather gets cold it causes joints to stiffen up. Chiropractic care helps keep these joints moving properly.

COLD WEATHER AND INACTIVITY There is a reason why one of the most common New Year's resolutions is joining the gym or losing weight. When the weather gets cold we often opt to stay inside and “hibernate,” rather than get outside and move/exercise. This lack of movement and inactivity can lead to increased weight, lack of joint mobility and an increased risk for injuries. Increased weight adds extra stress on our joints and spine, which can lead to increased joint pain only to cause further inactivity. Regular chiropractic adjustments will keep your body performing properly which may help prevent injuries from occurring in the first place.

A FEW TIP TO STAY ACTIVE IN THE WINTER MONTHS! • Plan activities ahead. When activities are in your calendar, you’re less likely to forget them • Find a fun local activity, like snowshoeing, skiing, skating etc. • Dress in Layers - insulate your body. When you can keep warm its easier to stay outside • Find indoor activities - at your local community centre. This could be aerobic classes, badminton, yoga etc. • Climb stairs - Deliberately add more steps to your day. Consider going up and down a flight in your home, the mall, or an office building more than once over the course of your regular daily activities. As little as five minutes can make a huge difference for your health • Find an activity buddy - Find someone willing to commit to being active as you are, and set a plan. They will make you accountable and more likely to follow through with exercise. Dr. Dwayne Willaert, Dr. Bruce Veltri, Dr. Lance Willaert

STIX 'N' PIX

confidence; all positive aspects for youth of Norfolk County. by: Dave Scott

Keep practising Ava and thank you for playing a couple of songs for me.

If there was one thing in life I wish I could have excelled at, it would have been music. I tried to learn guitar, but I just did not have it in me. I am not musically inclined!

Here is some background on the program from the Stix 'N' Pix website, stixnpix.com.

Norfolk County is rich with musical talent, and that talent continues to grow and inspire the youth in our community.

1) Provide financial support for individuals who cannot afford to play hockey. We have contacted all the coaches in Norfolk to let them know that no child should miss the opportunity to play due to financial need. We are continuing to promote the game of hockey/skating and have partnered with Norfolk County and Bauer First Shift to introduce young children to hockey.

Stix 'N' Pix is a cool program that is lending a hand, helping youth find their way with sports and the arts. Ava, a past recipient of the program, is a young lady in grade four who has a fondness for piano. She was able to receive ten free lessons after qualifying through the Stix 'N' Pix program. Ava then started piano lessons at Erie Music in Simcoe. Her father explained that Ava enjoyed the lessons and after the ten were up, she carried on for the rest of the session and participated in the year-end recital. Ava said she was nervous about the performance, but it was fun! Ava admits she has always liked the sound of the piano and for her, she feels like she can hear the piano singing to her. Ava is now in year two of her piano lessons at Erie Music. She enjoys playing and continues to develop her musical skills. I have to commend the folks at Stix 'N' Pix. By simply providing those ten lessons, they are helping children find a potential skill for life, while building enjoyment and self-

Stix 'N' Pix has three areas of focus for this coming year:

2) Instrumental musical instruction for children of families with financial need. Learning to play a musical instrument can provide a child with a lifelong passion. We believe that this is a privilege that many families cannot afford and therefore we have partnered with Erie Music of Simcoe to offer 20 instrumental music lessons to 20 children in Norfolk. 3) Provide financial support to youth who pursue either hockey or music beyond Norfolk. We want to see our youth reach their full potential and to reach for the stars. Often this means that they need to compete or seek out education beyond our community. So, we are offering financial assistance to young people from our community who are excelling in either music or hockey and who are continuing to grow as musicians or hockey players.
