One summer day, I don’t know how many years ago, a much better runner, approaching from the opposite direction, stopped as we were about to pass on the Lynn Valley Trail. He introduced himself, and we chatted for several minutes before continuing on our separate ways. I do not remember the details of our first conversation, and they do not matter. After that, we always acknowledged each other on the trail and began conversing more and more. Right from the beginning, conversation was easy, as it often is with the people we get to know. Besides running on the trail, he would sometimes be out walking his dog.

The thing about our friendship, as it developed naturally, and I would say quickly, is that with very few exceptions, we talked about the same general subject all the time. We were both longtime runners who absolutely loved the sport, its demands, its history, our histories within it, and each year’s big events. There was always so much to talk about whenever we met while training or when I walked with him, his wife Daniele and their dog Ruby (and, laterally, their young dog Sammy as well). Frequently, Daniele would follow quietly behind the two of us, kindly and happily letting us chatter on. She knew that we were both pleased to be in the company of someone who could really appreciate the effort, talent, will and sacrifice that went into becoming a successful competitive runner.

I learned that he had been an OFSSA medallist in track as a high school athlete and that he had gone to East Tennessee State University on a track scholarship. He learned that I was a veteran runner who had gravitated to longer and longer ultramarathons as I slowed and aged. I had coached for decades when I was younger, and he was coaching local runners, including his daughter Fiona.

We talked of many aspects of running: current and historic meets, the coaching of young athletes, our own running careers and experiences, occasionally of our own injuries and challenges, and of the ever-present fight against the scourge of aging.

Always, there never seemed to be enough time to fit it all into the time we had. Thinking about it now, I cannot recall even one moment when either of us wasn’t talking enthusiastically or listening intently to what the other was saying.

Every time I saw him, I knew a pleasurable, educational, fun time was upcoming.

Sometimes, we would cross paths several times a week, and sometimes, we wouldn’t see each other for a while. That made no difference whatsoever. We just jumped in immediately to whatever came to mind. Somehow, it was all in balance. I don’t think one of us talked or shared more or less than the other. It seemed to work out ideally with no effort.

I realize, more than ever, that we were just easy friends. That gives me a good feeling and makes me grateful. Given the many occasions during which we spent time together on the trail, it might seem unusual that we never discussed the weather and almost never talked about work (although occasionally he would go over some

ON THE LOSS OF MY FRIEND upcoming theatre challenges or other issues), that I know nothing of his politics, philosophical beliefs or religion, nothing of his other interests, and little about his family life except that he loved his wife, daughter and two dogs with all his heart and knew how lucky he was to have such a beautiful family. I had never visited his home until recently, and he had never visited mine. We never went anywhere together, not even for a sit-down at a coffee shop or restaurant.

I know nothing factual about him except what I have written here. Yet I am completely comfortable in saying that we were good friends and that we highly respected each other. I don’t feel that I have to know the minutiae of his life in order to know what type of person he was. I simply know he was a good man whose company I enjoyed without reservation.

Back in the day, I never liked going to cocktail parties or any gatherings where there were many people I didn’t know. It isn’t my way to make a lot of small talk or to ask someone I may never see again about their occupation or family. I have no interest in sharing any of that information about me with anyone who is not already a friend. I will say that I admire people who have that gift of welcoming a stranger in and are able to make everybody feel comfortable. Regrettably, it has never been a strength of mine, and now I never put myself in such a situation if I can avoid it. It is simply not me. I am most happy to let my life unfold in its own haphazard way. That seems the least stressful method, and when something good occurs, especially when a friendship develops naturally, that is very special.

I don’t really understand how a friendship happens. It has something to do with like-mindedness, the revelation of character traits that both parties find admirable, and sometimes similar interests. But whatever it is, I don’t have to know it because I know what friendship is for me. Among other things, a strong friendship offers us support, a source of inspiration and, perhaps most importantly, an environment within which to be ourselves.

Fortunately, I don’t think time or separation takes away from friendship. In this particular case, there is much about the man I will never know.

However, there is nothing else I need to know.

He was a special friend, and I will miss him greatly.

The value

of Routine

When those dark, cold winter days were upon us, I realised the importance of my daily routine. How it allowed me to find a consistent flow in my life.

I don't know if I would have understood the value of routine ten years ago. At that point in my life, the kids were teenagers, and things changed from hour to hour. There were hockey and dance classes, interviews for the magazine, trying to create quality family time and, let's not forget, the dogs. Life was moving faster than I could keep up.

I enjoyed most days of that phase of my life and the adventures that were put in front of our family! Nothing was perfect by any means, and some days, we would struggle to find a way to make it all work.

For everyone who has been through that phase, there is a hardened resolve to see the hard times for what they are and push on, looking to improve the next day.

It was hard to find a routine back then with various family physical and mental health concerns. Our perspective about life, goals and how the family unit could function changed.

I look back and wonder how we survived in that swirl of disconnect, but somehow, we did and turned it into a positive situation that our family is proud of.

As the decade passed, life and health situations slowly improved for us. Different realities were realised, and routine became a focal point in all our lives.

I sit today and understand how simple daily tasks allow me to feel at ease with who I am, relax, and remain in control.

It is as simple as a morning dog walk to clear my mind and get a feel for the upcoming day. In the evening, just doing the dishes provides a feeling of closing off the day and allows me a fresh beginning in the morning. It is such a small thing, but again, the routine process sets up success for the next day.

Sure, there are days when my little routine may have to be altered to fit with work or play, but the nice part is understanding that I will return to my regular routine the next day.

Looking back, I can see how those ten years were needed for us to grow. They helped me figure out which habits provide that feeling of daily success in life.

Look for a routine that helps you create the best day for you. Is there one little element that can make all the difference?

Over the course of my career, there have been many pivotal and impactful revelations that stand out as powerful and meaningful in relation to optimizing health and vitality as we age.

Our wellness potential is not the mystery it once may have been. There is a blueprint within our everyday lives, an individualized, sciencebased, doctor-created "opportunity" to be the best version of ourselves.

Metabolic Balance is a program I chose to investigate, with some scepticism, in 2021. After completing the course

training, we, as coaches, are mandated to experience the program firsthand before introducing it to our clients. My personal experience and success, hands down, have made this enlightening decision, one I am very excited to share with others.

This "plan for life" requires commitment and dedication, and yes, there is a cost to be incurred that incorporates all of the elements involved in the decision to honour the best version of you.

My husband, as always, is my amazing support person. He encourages me, cheers me on, picks me up and dusts me off as needed. We will celebrate our 42nd anniversary this August. Brian was 62 in December, and 60 is coming up for me. I don't take good health and intentional, healthy aging lightly. I've had enough of my own health challenges, and we've lost loved ones and friends over the years to various health conditions. We have a vision of how we wish to age and are embracing the knowledge, tools, responsibility and actions required to become our unique versions of optimal health.

Brian made a choice to embrace the Metabolic Balance Program on January 28, 2024. Lifestyle changes are not something you can "inflict" on another individual. We can observe, hold space, and desire that someone we love will be receptive to positive changes to habits that don't serve us, but ultimately, a decision to change must come from within.

It's true; he likes to (half) tease me that he's only doing this to be my first male client for the program, but as of February 13, 2024, he's already down 14.2 lbs! He is also very honest that it is hard work. (With the required initial dedication and learning curve, he doesn't want to navigate this without my assistance. That is where coaching comes in and why it is incorporated into the program.)

He is rocking this! That is a fantastic accomplishment!

But the biggest takeaway, the curiously incredible part, in my experience and the experiences of all of my other clients who have committed themselves to this amazing program thus far, say that weight regulation is just a happy "side effect" of embracing this individualized, normal, wholesome, food-based lifestyle.

My oldest friendship is 55 years long. This friend turned 60 recently. It put a little knot in my stomach, reminding me just how fast life slips by.

I remember meeting my friend in kindergarten, and all these years later, she is still one of my best friends. I don't remember a lot from those days, but I do recall she was always a nice person to be around.

You know, friendship is something that grows and matures with time. We never know how long a friendship will last. People's lives change, as does their outlook. Folks move away and raise their families, and friendships have that ebb and flow that pick up where they left off. It could be years between seeing one another, but the conversation returns naturally without hesitation.

This friend isn't a big flash-and-dash person. She is very down to earth, and the consistency of her just being herself over all these years has provided stability that I could always count on.

I remember playing tag at the old Dover rink in those early years. We were, at most, 10 years old.

I could never catch her, and she knew it.

Of course, she was a figure skater who had already mastered crossovers and proper use of the edges on the blades. I was just a typical upand-down ice hockey player skating from one end to another, making wide turns every time. I had no chance of catching her!

It was fun, music blaring and kids everywhere. It was a typical Saturday afternoon in Dover for much of the early 1970s.

Her dad passed away way too early. She was just a kid, and I cried for her. I hated that someone I knew was in that much pain. I was afraid to talk to her, fearing I would say the wrong thing. I look

back now and realise how silly that was. It is hard to know what to say when you are a kid.

All through our school years, we were friends.

There were four of us who hung out a lot in high school. There was an easiness to the relationships that cemented a bond over the years. Notes were passed in class, plans were made, and partying was done.

We were all dealing with our personal issues in that period, but when we hung out, the other problems seemed to drift away, and some sort of adventure would always turn up!

We still chatted when high school drew to a close.

We both worked in town and occasionally would grab lunch.

She met an absolutely great guy, and they married. I, on the other hand, was still partying way too hard and just not there yet.

At that time, she could have just written me off!

She saw me at my best and worst in those days but remained a friend. For that, I am eternally grateful.

These days, I enjoy when Monica and I hang out with my friend and her husband. The conversations are easy and fun. At this stage of our lives, we usually talk about our kids and their lives and dreams.

Today, life is such that friends come and go with every event, disagreement, or reveal. True friends may be harder to find.

I advise looking back over the years to see who had your back, made you smile, and never took you or themselves too seriously. They might be your oldest friend!
