The Godfather... September 21 just didn't have that usual morning feel to it. I just couldn't figure out why as I slowly made my way up the stairs on autopilot. Walking in a somewhat painful state, I questioned what I had done the day before. My mind was reaching for the reason that I felt this way. Monica and I headed out for the trails after breakfast. Running always gets me out of my funk but to no avail that day. I shuffled along, mentally trying to figure out what was holding me back. I cut my run short and headed to the car. I never do that, but that day something wasn't right! As we left and were heading back towards Vittoria, the rains came down hard in a quick, extremely powerful burst! Back home the day began slowly. I still was not able to understand why my energy just wasn't kicking in. Shortly thereafter, I looked down at my phone, and I saw a good friend had called. It wasn't surprising to hear from her so early, she is a farm girl and her day had probably been underway for a few hours. I checked my voicemail and listened to her message telling me that a mutual friend, Roger Cruickshank, had passed away that morning. Hearing the words, I understood exactly why my morning had been off. "The Godfather" of Vittoria was gone. It's only fitting that so many of us would feel his departure. For those that didn't have the opportunity to make the acquaintance of this wonderful man, let me share with you a few of the experiences I had. It was around eighteen years ago that I sat in a county meeting and watched Roger work his magic! I think a few county officials were trying to pull the wool over Roger's eyes that day. Roger was a community man through and through. He lived over 80 years in the same home in Vittoria. Vittoria was his pride and joy. He and the rest of the "Vittoria Mafia" (as they were to become known) made damn sure Vittoria was looked after and cared for by both the county and its residents. Civic pride in its sincerest form does exist in Vittoria! Back to my story, so Roger let the county guy talk on and on, never once interrupting, listening carefully and taking it all in. He waited his turn and then in his easy-going way, with a smile on his face, he explained in a respectful voice how the project was going to get done. Roger never once raised his voice. He carefully dissected the county plan explaining their faults along the way. Roger then proceeded to explain how he saw the project was going to go. His presentation was impeccable, his suave sense of timing perfect. The officials soon realised they were no match. His class, sense of honesty and fair play was far beyond their scope. He set a higher standard for the folks in that room that day and made county officials accountable. He left

everyone's dignity in place, his grace and common sense ruled the day! To this day I have not seen another person capable of doing what Roger did. I knew then and there, I had to get to know this guy! It wasn't long after we started the Norfolk Hub that I heard from Roger. He liked the Hub and its positive outlook on stories. Soon enough he would send the occasional Vittoria update for publication. I would pop over to the house, and we would end up chatting for an hour or so before realising we both needed to get back to work. I really appreciated him taking the time to talk with me. He always made me feel important and that what we did with the Hub mattered to the community. I came away a better person after our chats. Roger called a few months ago and wanted to talk, so I stopped by the nursing home for a visit. We caught up about life and his health issues over the past year. As we chatted, I sensed he understood that his life was drawing to a close. Of course, he asked how my family was, placing my needs above his. That was typical Roger, helping others first. We chatted about days gone by in his life, his fun-loving car club years, his time teaching and the incredible accomplishments of the Vittoria community. Of course, during our conversation travels, we spent time discussing the success of the annual Spaghetti Dinner and Auction - an integral part of the spirit of Vittoria. Roger named off many awesome volunteers who bring it all together year after year. As he reminisced, you could see his mind flash back to his family and the many friends he has known and shared his life with. His breath was short, and his words were somewhat rushed. He was trying not to forget a single person who had helped shape his community. At one point I said to Roger, "You know, you have never told me how the nickname 'The Godfather' came about?" A smile crossed his tired, weary face as his droopy eyes quickly recaptured that sparkle. He eased back in his wheelchair, the sunshine peeping through the window as the warmth hit us. I settled in for a story, and Roger began, "Well, Tom, Gary Jim and I thought it best‌" Thank you Roger.

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

MY BROTHER AND ARETHA Aretha Franklin died August 16, 2018 at the age of 76. “The world is celebrating you and the world is mourning you and the world is going to miss you.” - Smokey Robinson At the time of the July long weekend in 1967, my brother, David, was an undergrad student at the University of Waterloo. The father of one of his friends, Greg, was in the city on business. He told his son that he could borrow the car for the weekend and reminded him not to do anything crazy. The first thing Greg did was disconnect the odometer. Then he and my brother, along with three more of their friends, hit the road to Woodstock and then Port Stanley. After staying at a cottage there for the night, they drove to their main destination, Detroit, intent on seeing Aretha Franklin at the Twenty Grand. The Twenty Grand was generally considered to be the top night club in the city and was one of the most famous night clubs in America during its glory days in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Lines of people would wrap around the club waiting to get in. It was a beautiful place with three main rooms: the Driftwood Lounge, the Fireside Lounge and the Gold Room. All the top Detroit stars of the day performed there, usually doing one or two week stints, often in the Driftwood Lounge, which had a seating capacity of 1200. Marvin Gaye had his wedding reception there. Smokey Robinson and his wife courted at the club. Motown artists would occupy many of the choice seats for performances. The Twenty Grand

was like a big neighbourhood bar, with the difference being that it booked all the Motown acts. Upon arrival, the boys were immediately struck by the number of Lincolns and Cadillacs in the parking lot. After entering the premises, one went up a few stairs to the formal entrance. My brother and his friends joined a small line-up at the doorway. Immediately, they were asked by a club employee, “Why are you here?” One of them replied that they had come to see Aretha Franklin sing. The employee politely told them to wait and he went to get the manager. After coming out, the manager greeted the boys and told them to follow him. They were directed up to a table very close the stage after a few patrons were moved. David and his friends’ walk up toward the front had not gone unnoticed. The manager immediately stepped in front of the microphone and announced to the crowd that he wanted to welcome “our friends from CANADA.” David and his pals were the only white people in the club. He realized that they had been placed in full view at the very front for their own safety. They had the best seats in the house from which to enjoy an epic evening of a young Aretha singing and playing the piano. David told me that from the back of the room you would barely have been able to see her. This little anecdote from long ago takes on much more significance when placed in its historical context. The five students had arrived, naïve and oblivious, at a time of extreme racial tension. Just three weeks after their visit, the Detroit Riot took place. It was the bloodiest race riot in the long, hot summer of 1967 and the largest civil disturbance in twentieth century America, taking place over five days, beginning July 23. It was primarily a series of

violent confrontations between residents of African American neighbourhoods and the city’s police department. The riot was the culmination of decades of institutional racism, segregation and unemployment. Deindustrialization within the city limits had taken many jobs to outlying communities. The east side of Detroit had lost over 70,000 positions in the two decades following World War II. Construction of freeways and the prospect of more integration, due to the demolition of the city’s two main African American neighbourhoods, caused many whites to head to the suburbs. From 1950 to 1960, Detroit lost twenty per cent of its population. Adding to the tension was the African American community’s relationship with the predominately white city police force. The immediate cause of the riot was an escalating physical conflict between the officers and witnesses during a police raid that soon spiralled out of control. Adding to the danger, the mass theft of firearms turned the area into an

urban war zone with random sniper fire. The protest and violence spread to other parts of the city on a hot, steamy night and the police lost control of the situation. During the next several days, more than 9000 members of the US National Guard, along with 800 Michigan State police, were sent in. In addition, President Johnson deployed US Army troops. By the time the riot was finally quelled, the results included 43 deaths, many injuries, more than 7000 arrests and the burning of over 1000 buildings. It was considered to be one of the main catalysts for the militant Black Power movement. The exodus of people from the city escalated, with 40,000 leaving in 1967 and 80,000 in 1968. I visited Detroit many times in the 1990’s and much of the downtown core remained burned out and abandoned. Occasionally in our lives, we may find ourselves a part of or close to, historical events. It is part of the journey not knowing exactly what is on the horizon.

The Written Word by: dave scott

I took the opportunity to indulge in one of my favourite hobbies over the summer. No, not another running story. I found the time to read a few books that I had been trying to get to. I have to admit that I love the escape from real life when a fine book comes my way. As I finished the final page of the third book, I realised that they were all about men looking for a better life. By sharing their personal stories, they were able to help me understand history; to step back and observe life through their eyes. One was a talented musician who longed for an education. He grew up poor and lived his life on the road performing; always feeling that his music was his soul. The second book centred around a baseball pitcher who struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. He somehow managed to right his ship and devote himself to helping others with their own addiction issues. The third was about an athlete who was wrongfully jailed for a crime he did not commit. For years, he fought for his freedom. Eventually, after over twenty years he was released. He then dedicated his life to helping others. These topics were not light dinner conversation, but their bare honesty and hope for a better tomorrow pressed them forward towards greatness. In spite of the cards they were dealt, they found a way to persevere in their darkest moments. Did I mention that all three of these men were in the height of their careers during the 1960's, an extremely troubling time in the USA? These men all faced racial

discrimination daily. They found the strength and courage to continue on, to stand for their beliefs... for equality! B.B. King opened the Blues to the world, creating a bond that was universal. He connected folks through his music, colour did not matter. B.B. was able to do that which no politician could ever fathom, bring people together. Doc Ellis, the baseball pitcher, once heard derogatory names shouted at him before a game. He walked over to the man making those remarks, who was sitting with his son. Doc asked the young boy if he could come to their house for dinner. The child in his excitement asked his father, who had to agree. Doc went to dinner, got to know them and chose to educate the family. He built a new bridge, not a wall. Rubin Hurricane Carter, a man of both amazing physical and mental strength, was wrongfully convicted of racial murders at the height of his boxing career. He educated himself on the law and slowly helped his lawyers build his case, which was finally overturned. During his incarceration, Rubin refused to lead the life of a prisoner, standing by his innocence. He never lost sight of who he was, holding firm and proud. Rubin eventually proved that he had been the one who the police had racially wronged. After he was freed, Rubin helped others who had been wrongfully charged in their lives. The colour of a person's skin does not matter. What matters is the person within.

100 WOMEN CARE ABOUT BABIES Norfolk General Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce that the 100 Women Who Care Norfolk has selected the Foundation as the recipient of $16,500 to purchase a new incubator for the birthing unit. On Thursday, August 30, 100 Women co-founders Sue Goble, Michelle Grummett and Beth Redden presented the funds to Heather Riddell NGH VP of Patient Care. "This is a vitally important piece of equipment that provides a safe and stable environment, especially for premature births. Thanks to the 100 Women Who Care, we can maintain the highest level of care to vulnerable newborns at NGH," commented Heather Riddell. "We were made aware that the hospital only has one, very aged incubator. Purchasing the new unit gives families added confidence and enhances our local capabilities," stated Sue Goble. "NGH employs excellent professionals and facilities to support our young families, and we know this investment will be appreciated by both staff and patients." The new incubator was on the list of several pieces of equipment to be purchased during May’s "Delivering our Future" Radiothon a day-long broadcast with local radio station 98.9 myFM. Since May 2014, 100 Women Who Care Norfolk has donated over $280,000 to 18 local charities.

SMALLMOUTH BASS A lot of people have said that summer has ended. In reality that is not so. But most people relate children going back to school in Ontario as the ending of summer. Summer is knocking at the door, but it’s not quite fall. Although at the time this article goes to print, it will be officially fall. Streams, rivers and lakes are generally experiencing low water levels and both water and air temperatures are decreasing. Generally this indicates prime conditions to target smallmouth bass – and big ones can be the norm. These existing environmental conditions create targetable big fish patterns. If you extend your bass fishing until well after Labour Day, the first thing you will notice is less fishing pressure. Some anglers have moved onto hunting or some sort of fall/winter activities. The smallmouth bass will be feeding heavily, stocking up on nutrients essential to carry them through the icy cold winter months and for the females into the spring spawn. As the water temperatures drop through the 60’s and into the 50’s Fahrenheit the bass forage on crayfish and baitfish to bulk up for the winter months. At this time of the year the use of tubes is very productive. Various other soft plastic baits can be effective as well. The use of a drop shot rig can prove deadly. As the water temperature drops to 50˚F and lower, a smallmouth bass typically will not chase down a fast moving meal. This time of the year is when you employ finesse tactics. Slow down your presentation and put the bait in their face. Smallmouth bass have keen vision so light line is imperative. Jigging spoons are also very effective for late season smallie success. This is a relatively new technique for smallmouth bass, but it can be deadly when fishing deep water structure and humps. To be a successful late season smallmouth bass angler pay attention to subtle details such as bottom transitions. You may have to change your techniques several times in one day. Let the bass tell you what they want. Colour can be very important as well. I have witnessed very, very subtle changes in a certain colour on particular bait and it has made all the difference in success. If you are fishing with a partner make sure you are each using a different colour, presentation method, or different bait choice. This helps to narrow down the fish’s selectivity. Focus on deep points that come off of the land. These are high location areas. If you can find large rock transitioning into gravel and sand - all the better. Bass will locate themselves on the substrate changes. Your marine electronics will help you find these productive areas.

SPOOKY CAR NOISES & SAFETY TIPS!

CAR CARE CHRONICLES

When you are driving your car and you hear an unfamiliar sound, it can be scary. Don’t let your car scare you, Simcoe Canadian Tire Auto Service Centre is here with helpful tricks and treats for getting to the bottom of what could be haunting your car. If you notice any of these ghouls taking up residence in your car then it might be time to book a service with our experts.

becomes possessed by the spirit, it can be the sign of a faulty serpentine belt, or belt tensioner. Given how incredibly important the belt system is to your vehicle, you will want to deal with those banshees right away.

► MOAN OF THE ZOMBIES If you own a rear wheel drive vehicle, then you should pay extra attention to the living differential. A dronelike, steady moan means that there are problems with the differential such as a bad bearing or worn gears. Get your car to a certified zombie mechanic to bring your car back to the land of the living.

► SNAKES TAKING OVER YOUR ENGINE The hissing and rattling of a den of snakes should not be coming from under your hood. If your ride is spooked by slithering and hissing sounds of snakes, you could have a problem with a leak. Depending on the system, this leak can affect things like fuel economy to performance, right down to drivability issues and safety. Make sure you get those snakes removed as soon as possible.

► CRUNCH OF BONES If you drive a vehicle with a manual transmission and you hear the crunch of bones in the graveyard, crunch with every shift, then it is time to stop those skeletons with a visit to the transmission shop. A crunching or grinding when shifting gears in a manual transmission can be the result of a worn out clutch that isn’t engaging, or a synchronizer that prohibits smooth shifting. Go to a mechanic who is familiar with a bucket o' bones and get back on the road.

► GHOSTS CLUNKING CHAINS When ghosts have decided to haunt your vehicle and clunk those chains, you know you're in for trouble. The otherworldly clanking under your vehicle can be the sign of a worn out ball joint, control arms, or tie rods. If your ghosts are more active on corners, then it may also be an issue with steering components. When your ride is haunted with clunks and bumps, WHO YOU GONNA CALL?

Car noises coming from unidentified parts of your vehicle can be scary, but they don’t have to be.

► SHRIEK OF A BANSHEE

The Simcoe Canadian Tire Auto Service Team can get the witches and gremlins out from under your hood and get you back on the road in no time.

The howling lament of a banshee can be enough to stop the bravest in their tracks. When your engine

In the excitement of trick-or-treating, Halloween is an occasion where most little ghosts and goblins forget about important safety precautions. For this reason, it is essential that parents and motorists are aware of the safety measures that are involved in keeping everyone safe on Halloween night. On Halloween, it's best to avoid driving in subdivisions during the hours of 6-9 pm when most trick-or-treating takes place. However if you must get behind the wheel there are several Halloween driving “tricks” to keep everyone safe: • Stay well below the speed limit and give yourself extra time to get to your destination. • Refrain from using a cell phone at all costs while driving in neighbourhoods. Driving must be your main focus as a little ghost or goblin could pop out from anywhere at any moment. • Pay extra attention to what is going around you. Be conscious of sidewalks and roadways and watch for any children darting across the street or in between parked cars. • When pulling in or out of driveways stay alert of your surroundings. There are also several tips that parents can follow to ensure that motorists aren't faced with any unnecessary mishaps: • Replace your child's mask with makeup to make sure that they have a clear, unobstructed view of their surroundings. • Avoid costumes that are dark colours and that will go unnoticed by drivers. Instead choose bright colours, or add reflective tape. • Accompany your child, or if they are old enough make sure they are with a group of responsible friends. • Instruct children to stay on sidewalks, but if they must cross, to look both ways before walking across the street. Halloween isn't a night where just the young forget about potentially dangerous situations; many adults attend costume parties where alcohol is being served but fail to take the necessary precautions to get home safely. If attending a party with the intention to drink, plan ahead, make arrangements to get a ride with a designated driver or a taxi. Driving home impaired is never an option. TIPS & ADVICE THE COLD WEATHER IS COMING… I asked one of the guys at the World of Plumbing, if he could help us with a list for winterizing the plumbing at the cottage or the house. More than once I have forgotten to turn off the outside taps! Every situation is unique, but here are a few reminders for the fall season! Make sure all the valves that lead to outside faucets are turned off inside the house. Open all outside faucets and remember to remove all garden hoses or the faucets won’t drain. Some water systems require being blown out by using an air compressor. In a building that won’t be heated over the winter, be sure to blow out all pipes and drain all p-traps. Drain all toilets and water heater. Add some plumbing anti-freeze to the p-traps and toilets. Open all sink faucets and shower valves to allow proper draining as well. Remember to shut off the power or fuel supply to the water heater before draining it. If in doubt, call your local professional. Dave Scot t

'BLUE JAYS' by: Vic Gibbons

Chuck, the cat, keeps a constant eye on all of the wildlife paintings that hang on the walls of the gallery and Vic's home. Chuck has been Vic’s sidekick for a little over five years now. Both Vic and Chuck are quite fond of the Blue Jays print seen above! That poor cat must go crazy surrounded by all the paintings of birds! The original Blue Jay painting was done over twenty years ago, but there is still time to purchase a framed print. With Christmas not far off, do your shopping early and pop out to Vic’s place. While you are there, perhaps Chuck will put in a guest appearance.

IMMUNITY In Our Community BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

READY OR NOT, HERE "IT" COMES

Yes, it's that time of year again - With the return of school, we often see a rapid increase (and a wide variety) of very vigorous and enthusiastic viruses and bacteria. All of these invaders are looking for any opportunity to introduce themselves to you - school, home, your workplace... The advent of a quickly approaching fall, less sunshine, shorter daylight hours, confined spaces with indoor heating and often recirculated air, can combine to create a perfect storm - a potential for a Petri dish of epic proportions! At Dover Apothecary, we offer a special level of care to our clients. We know that as a society and within our own community, we need to be vigilant of those more vulnerable. Fatigue, stress, poor nutrition/diet, compromised immune status, the elderly and very young - these are just a few examples of people at higher risk. Individuals identified at a higher risk are not just more likely to contract illness, they are more likely to have a harder time fighting it off and are often vulnerable to secondary infections (or as my very wise Grandma used to call it "the dreaded complications").

THE BEST DEFENCE

Since the best defence is a good offence (an age-old adage), your immune system is no exception when it comes to preparing and utilising an arsenal of defence strategies. Start as always with a solid foundation - A healthy, nutrient dense whole foods diet (alkalising foods reduce inflammation and support immune function), sugars and mucus forming foods are best avoided as they can reduce immune function. Maintain a good sleep routine, fresh air and exercise, plenty of clean water and healthy stress management techniques. Hand Washing with soap and water - there is no practice that replaces good hygiene practices. Clean and wipe surfaces and door handles, your steering wheel and your mobile devices - if you are out in public, avoid touching your face with your hands until you have washed them! While we should strive to get our nutrients through a healthy diet and maintain a sensible lifestyle, it's often necessary to offer our bodies some added support. Many of us fall short of therapeutic levels of certain nutrients for a variety of reasons, and our climate

and geographic location limit our sun exposure and availability of local fresh produce. Consider discussing the following supplements with a qualified health professional to see if they are right for you and at what dosage: Vitamin D; Vitamin C; Zinc; Probiotics; Omega 3; and a Multivitamin. Many herbs (and spices) are also beneficial and are worth investigating: Garlic; Astragalus; certain Mushroom extracts; Ginger etc. Sinus rinses can be very helpful and keeping your nasal passages moist is another suggestion that assists many - you may even decide to employ a variety of these strategies depending on your circumstances.

WHEN PREVENTIVE STRATEGIES AREN'T ENOUGH

If you happen to fall prey to these opportunistic organisms, there are still many protocols you may be able to employ to reduce the length and severity of whatever managed to catch you! Along with all of the supplements and strategies already mentioned above, these are some things to consider: Echinacea, Oil of Oregano, Elderberry extract, plenty of warm broths and teas and fluids. Tissues, extra T.L.C. and rest are key. Proper medical attention for symptoms that are severe or persist is a must - especially for anyone with a pre-existing condition or immune-compromised system. Again, Immune status is very individual and different age groups and populations are more susceptible, vulnerable and at risk recovery takes longer, and complications can be serious. Being as conscientious and mindful of others as a society and within our community is key. TIPS FOR THIS SEASON Keep an eye on relatives, friends and neighbours - especially if you know people that are living on their own! Social isolation can compound risk for many reasons as it often goes hand in hand with poor nutritional status and self care. Reaching out to lend a helping hand or letting others know you care, can make a bigger difference than you may realise. Let's strive to be an exceptional community - after all, the only difference between being "human" and being "humane," is the letter "e." Barb Anstead, NNCP Holistic Nutritionist

YOUR

PERSONAL

BEST.

Sometimes no matter how hard you try to conquer a certain PB (personal best), for some reason it does not work out! We have talked about this before. Sometimes outside factors can affect your results. The weather is too hot or too cold, improper hydration (over or under), diet, the goo won't settle, you have a persistent, nagging injury, or it just isn't your day. Perhaps, the biggest obstacle of all is getting out of your own head. Over the years I have found that if you stick to your goal, believe in yourself and be dedicated to your training, it will eventually happen. It may take a few more times then you hope, but each time you will learn a little about yourself and what it is going to take to accomplish your goal! Stay positive and remember, if it were easy, everyone would do it!

Traditionally Sleep Apnea is seen as a condition that affects middle aged men, especially if they already suffer from Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol or have a few extra pounds. That is not true at all; Sleep Apnea does not discriminate just to that category of men. In fact, we now treat almost equal amounts of men and women in all age ranges for Sleep Apnea.

SIMCOE

While the prevalence of Sleep Apnea does tend to be higher if you have certain risk factors, we are now diagnosing and treating Sleep Apnea equally in all demographics. This is no longer a “man's” condition but a condition that is seen is all age brackets and genders. Recent studies are showing that women are equally as likely, one for one, to be diagnosed with Sleep Apnea as their male counterparts. We are now also seeing no age limits on who is being tested and diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. It can be found in children as young as seven and in people into their nineties.

TILLSONBURG

The other stereotypical thing that used to be associated with a diagnosis of Sleep Apnea is weight. While this is still a factor in the severity level of Sleep Apnea, it is not the sole determining factor. Sleep Apnea should not be thought of as an overweight person’s condition. While being overweight does increase your chances and severity of Sleep Apnea, people who are at ideal weight or even underweight can be just as likely to have Sleep Apnea.

FALL CLEANUP TIPS The fall season is upon us, and that means the leaves are going to start falling off the trees. Most people can hardly wait to get out and start cleaning; to get their yard and garden ready for winter. Raking and other jobs around the house can take their toll on your body. Chiropractors treat many individuals who injure themselves by not taking the proper precautions when doing fall cleanup.

HERE IS SOME ADVICE

► Gentle stretching exercises before, during and after cleanup. ► Don’t take on too much too soon. Start with little jobs to warm up before you tackle the big jobs. ► Do not remain bent or stooped for prolonged periods. That is a position your back is not used to and it will let you know. ► Wear proper clothing. Dress in layers so you can adjust based on the weather. ► Use long-handled tools to save your back from bending. Pushing and pulling while bent over can strain your shoulders and back. ► When lifting or shovelling, use your legs not your back. ► Switch hands frequently while raking, hoeing, shovelling etc. This distributes the load evenly on your body instead of overworking one side. ► If joint or muscle soreness occurs, try resting and if needed, apply an ice pack for 10-15 min. ► For acute injuries and pain that occurs after your chores, see your chiropractor. Don’t be one of those people who suffers needlessly by telling themselves it will get better in a couple days.

CONCUSSED OR WHAT? Cognition is an integral factor in a person's ability to function with the world around them through effectively inputting information. An individual's cognitive function revolves around the capacity of their attention span, memory, reasoning and use of language. A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that is caused when the brain forcefully shakes and contacts the skull, usually from a direct blow or whiplash injury. Symptoms of a concussion include confusion, head pain, dizziness and temporary loss of consciousness or memory deficits surrounding the event. Participation in a contact sport increases the likelihood of suffering from a concussion due to frequent impact and high-velocity action, with a high number of concussion cases being underreported. That's where baseline testing comes in. Baseline testing is a series of cognitive tests designed to evaluate an individual's brain function before an injury occurs. The idea behind this approach is to obtain the normal level of a person's cognitive function and perform the same tests again after a head injury occurs to compare any discretions. Underreporting of concussion symptoms is common amongst a variety of athletes especially in high competition situations due to the desire to keep playing and primarily the belief that the injury is not serious enough. When the brain suffers from a concussion, it is more susceptible to suffering another one and the more it obtains, the longer the recovery time between each blow. Returning to play too soon or continuing to play after a head injury occurs are primary risk factors for increasing the severity and duration of the trauma. The baseline testing process takes about 30 minutes to complete via computer or laptop, giving the therapists the ability to score the tests on the spot. This method is highly convenient, cost-effective and contributes to reporting concussions which helps researchers increase the accuracy and reliability of their statistics. The Ontario Balance Centre located in Great Lakes Physiotherapy uses the SHIFT concussion system and can help treat concussions and offer baseline testing to any athlete or individual who would like to know where their cognition stands.

LIFE WITH

LYME By: Erin Scott

Power is something that has always fascinated me. The things that people will do to gain political and monetary power can become crazy. The power that has always fascinated me most though is one that isn’t talked about enough. It isn’t acknowledged as it should be. The power that I am talking about is the strength that every person has to live, grow and be, to dream, hope and believe. I am a powerful person. Life has tried to knock me down and out, over and over again. Yet still, I stand tall. Every person has this ability within them, sometimes it takes dramatic and traumatic events for us to realise this, but in the end, we discover our true powers along the way. Superpowers are very popular in this day and age, heck they have been for decades. My favourite has always been Wonder Woman. She is bad-ass and if there is one thing I love and respect it’s some bad-ass woman power. We create these superheroes to defend and protect, and we put them through some crazy stuff to gain their abilities. You always see kids dressing up as superheroes for Halloween, they want to fly and fight bad guys. Now don’t get me wrong, I love superheroes, but sometimes this means that we overlook some of the true superpowers that people have. The people who live every day with anxiety, panic attacks and depression, who are dealing with mental health issues, who live their lives with physical disabilities and chronic diseases. These are people who know how to fight and who must seek their own superpowers within because every day they are faced with demons of their own.

I have often been told that we are only given what we can handle in life. I don’t believe that. Bad things happen, and we fight. We fight to live, to find peace within ourselves, to find courage, strength and hope. We choose how we react to everything in our lives, whether we let the darkness crush our hearts and hopes or whether we claw ourselves out of the pits of despair. We alone can decide our fate. I choose to live, even if it means to suffer through the days of darkness, fear and pain for that one moment when the sun finally shines through. When it ultimately does, it is worth every moment that I have fought. The best feeling in the world is when your heart sings. There will always be sadness and pain in my eyes, even when (what my friends have dubbed) my parliamentary smile is in place. I will forever have my battle scars but will hold my head high because I am a fighter, I am resilient. Many people would not have been able to handle what I went through in the way that I have. I don’t believe that for this reason I was ‘given’ this life. I can’t believe that. I feel that bad things happened in my life and as the badass warrior queen that I am in my heart, I just decided to slay them. This is my life, and nobody and nothing is ever going to take that away. Life is weird sometimes, it seems random and chaotic like we are all trapped in a storm, a blizzard so intense that you can’t see in front of your face. We have no clue which way we are going or what lies ahead, all we can do is keep walking forward. No matter how tired we get, we must persevere, in many cases for our own survival, one foot in front of the other, one two, three four, five six, seven, eight... I do this a lot, count each step as I go. I focus on putting one foot in front of the other, over and over and eventually the next thing that I know, I’ve gotten somewhere. I wear a little anklet with a bell or two on it because the sound is a reminder that with each step that I take, I may be walking blindly, but I'm still walking, still moving forward. The soft ringing of the bell keeps pace with me on my journey, one two, three four, ding, ding, ding, ding. Forward I go, into the abyss.

FROM THE CHAIR. There is nothing like a hot cup of coffee on a cool fall morning combined with an easy-going conversation with Laura from the Blade Salon in Port Dover. Laura and I had met to look at where her column would go for the next few months, and the conversation led me to ask Laura about her mantra for her and the staff. Laura explained that is important that the clients of the Blade look forward to their appointment, feel pampered and leave feeling amazing and beautiful! It is all about the client having a wonderful experience every time they come through the door. Laura talked about developing a relationship with her clients, listening and understanding their needs, providing advice and putting the personal touch into their experience. The Blade provides an expectational, relaxed environment from the moment you walk in the door. I find the staff makes you feel welcome. Laura reminds us that the guys deserve to be pampered as well and invites the fellas to stop in for an appointment. Give the Blade a try, you won’t be disappointed!
