Hippie Hippie Shake!

Everyone has a different understanding of what the word Hippie means. It occurred to me that perhaps we should look more at the musical and social impacts that have resounded over the past 50 years from this movement.

The music especially, is still as prevalent as ever. With the world facing a more challenging crisis each day, music - from the likes of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, CCR, The Band, Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Doors and artist like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendricks, Carlos Santana and Neil Young - is being rediscovered by a generation searching for their own identity.

TWO GUYS By: Dave Scott

Every conversation you have, has a single moment where both parties involved make a decision to carry on with the discussion or break it off. Reasons to stop may depend on the topic, a difference of opinion, or perhaps it just draws to a close, and you move on. When you meet someone new, it is that moment in the initial exchange that may decide the long-term outcome of the relationship. Over the years I've been very blessed to meet amazing folks and establish long-term friendships because of just that, that first excellent heart-to-heart. Today I want to talk about two gentlemen, both of whom I met years ago, one around 2000 and the other around 2009. I don't know if they actually know each other. Both live in the county. One has lived in the same house for 81 years. The other retired here after working many years in different places, worldwide, his wife is initially from the area. They both have had an impact on my life. I consider them great mentors who have had positive influences on me. One led me to meet Ike Hewitt and discover Ike's story as a POW of WWII. For that, I am forever grateful. Ike and I became good friends. Both have a dry, witty sense of humour, and the intelligence of each of these men would put any of our local politicians to shame. I have actually witnessed one quietly control the whole conversation with county staff, slowly working his magic to help the community at large. It was amazing! The other individual once invited me along for a field trip. When we arrived at our destination, I watched as volunteers came forth to chat with my friend. It was odd, they all wanted to assist him. When I asked one of the volunteers how he knew my friend, a big smile crossed his face, and he told me the story of how the tireless work and dedication of said friend had saved their museum. He had never mentioned a word to me. Both of these men are humble beyond belief. I've tried over the years to get them to let me tell their stories, but to no avail, that is not who they are. Their problem-solving skills are similar, where they both tend to go back to the root of the situation, dissect it, formulate a solution, put a plan in place and stick to it. They are relentless that way. Communication is a strong suit for both. Each will look you in the eye when they talk to you and make you feel important. They have mastered the art of stimulating dialogue without saying too much; they let you form your own opinion. At the same time, they also listen to those around them first, and then draw their own conclusions, while maintaining respect for the other person’s opinion. In society today, we need this form of conversation to return!

Every conversation is a learning experience for me, an opportunity to understand how other generations think and adapt to situations. Coffee with them is an event! Both may be a tad old-school but continue to have an understanding of modern technology in the world. I remember popping by for a visit one time and my friend was busy listening to the BBC on his iPhone. I think their ultimate strengths are their compassion to help others and their commitment to the community at large. They have a clear understanding of the big picture and over the years have worked diligently to make Norfolk the best it can be. They are progressive thinkers whose brilliant minds are trapped inside failing bodies. As I write this, both of the men are working through epic health challenges, but again they deflect the conversation from their own problems and ask how my family is and turn the chat to focus on other issues. It's just who they are. The lessons I have learned from both have served me well. Patience comes to mind. I tend to let things unfold now and gather all the facts before yapping! Another is, there is a solution to every problem, you just need to dig a little deeper and stick with it. Of course, the biggest of all is being a good person, respect folks the way you would want them to respect you. In today's world, we all tend to react negatively at first to situations. We all want instant gratification and tend to look at life through a "me-first" lens. We need to stop and understand that we have to help one another. Then we will successfully take the lessons learned from great leaders like these two men and put their teachings to work for a better community. I write this for myself and all our community when I say thank you to these men and the unheralded work they continue to do. Thank You!

WE DID ALRIGHT! - PART 2 -

“Every obstacle that we overcome allows us to acquire strength, gain wisdom and internalize gratitude. The sacrifice demanded is never wasted; instead it provides an education.”

- Jennifer Pharr Davis

I was still out on the course on the last night of the 6 Day Race in New Jersey. My main goal of setting a new Canadian record for my age group had been reached. My left leg and foot were very swollen and the foot was turned sharply inward all the time. I could not stand up unsupported whenever I came to a stop. There hadn’t been a normal night’s sleep in nearly a week and it was still raining. So why was I still out there? Why was I still smiling to myself? I may not have all the answers, but I have some of them. I had committed to doing this event ten months before when I had my second knee replacement. It was my idea and my idea alone. I am certain that I wouldn’t have worked on my recovery as diligently if I hadn’t harboured the crazy goal of doing the six day. Over the last forty years I have participated in a few hundred races over distances from 800 metres to ultramarathons. My running interest now is in exploring and taking part in extreme ultra events. There is much to figure out, particularly regarding the mental aspects of moving forward for increasingly longer periods of time. The only way we can discover our potential is to test our limits. So there I was, on the one mile loop, having a peaceful little war with myself. The last two days had definitely been challenging, given the mostly

continuous rain and my slowly deteriorating mental and physical capabilities. However, I think the point is, I was enjoying the experience. Endurance isn’t necessarily the ability to overcome pain but rather the ability to embrace it. Rick, the race director, had suggested I try for 500 kilometres. I had to ask him to convert that and he told me it was 311 miles. I told him I didn’t think I was capable of much more after getting the record, but it gave me something to think about when I headed back out on the course after a dinner break. By the end of one more lap I had decided that 500 km had a nice Canadian feel to it. I informed Mac that I was going to stay out during the night and keep walking. I could not run anymore. I carried on, at times barely able to really look after myself due to balance issues caused by leaning so far forward as I walked. As the end was approaching, I had time to reflect on what had happened during the last week. One of the highlights was getting to meet Ann Trason, an encounter that was totally unexpected. Even before she arrived to participate in the 48 hour race held over the last two days of our event, there was a buzz of anticipation in the air. Ann Trason is unquestionably the greatest woman ultrarunner of all time, a multiple world and American record holder and fourteen time female champion of the most prestigious 100 mile race, the Western States 100. Nowadays, she runs recreationally but retains her iconic status in the world of long distance running. On the afternoon of the fifth day, I was sitting in our RV on a rest break, with my feet up. All of a sudden there was a knock on the door and a voice called out, “Is Mac there?” Mac opened the door and there was Ann, dressed in a very funky fashion. Upon being invited to come in, she demurred saying she was too muddy. Mac told In The Long Run Proudly Sponsored By

her not to worry and in she came. Here I was, after so many days competing, trying to figure out what was going on. The icon came in, sat down at the table with Mac and thanked her profusely for her assistance. The greatest ever was thanking Mac for her help. I’ve always known Mac to be resourceful but I had no knowledge of what had taken place. The three of us proceeded to have a very scattered conversation on a variety of topics and then she was on her way. I then learned that Mac had been able to fix a non-functioning light and they quickly became friends. What a world! I put my shoes back on and headed out to do my loops. Of course, Ann now knew who I was so we had a couple of chats on the course. I ended up doing her last lap with her as she reached her predetermined goal of 101 miles. I found out later that she had graciously written a couple of notes, at Mac’s request, to be given to two of our friends back home who are big fans. These and many other reflections passed through my mind as I walked through the night and early morning of the last day, gradually closing in on the 500 km mark. My last memory of the race itself

is passing by our trailer and hearing Mac call out from the doorway, “What lap are you on?” Not thinking, I answered, “311” no longer giving it any special significance. Mac asked me to slow down as she wanted to finish her morning coffee before heading over to the finish to get a photo. I told her not to rush. She had lots of time as I still had almost a mile to go and was moving very laboriously. Mac was there as I finished and had a small treat for me. Last year she had given me a nice little bottle of champagne at the end of the race. Unfortunately, having set my full glass down to cheer for one of our friends, I proceeded to kick it over. This year I got a can of Mountain Dew. I had stayed up all night with no sleep. After Mac packed everything up and the awards ceremony had finished, we said our good-byes and headed back to the hotel. Once there, I stated that I would like to just lie in an Epsom salt bath for a while. Mac suggested that I might want to have a nap first. As she told me later, I replied, “No, I want to have the…” I was asleep.

LARRY MELLORS

TOUGH DAYS ON THE WATER We have been spending time on the water with very limited success. But it’s the same for most everyone. Like everything else in life, there are exceptions to every rule. Case in point is the terrific walleye and rainbow trout trolling that is happening currently in the western basin of Lake Erie. There are a few reasons as to why the fishing for these species is good right now. The most important reason is the strength of the year class that is showing up. There was favourable water and temperature at the time of spawning, especially for the walleye. Overall the fishing has been tough for a few reasons. We have experienced extremely high air temperatures. Along with this are the resultant high water temperatures due to the extreme air temperature both during the day and nighttime. A lot of anglers refer to this time of the fishing season as the “dog days of summer.” The dog days of summer typically in our hemisphere, the northern, is the period between early July and early September when we experience hot, sultry weather. These days also refer to the period of stagnation or inactivity that occurs. Many people today use the phrase to mean something like that, but originally; the phrase had nothing to do with the lazy days of summer. In actuality the dog days refer to the Dog Star, Sirius, and its position in the heavens. To the Greeks and Romans, the “dog days” occurred around the day when Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July. They referred to these days as the hottest time of the year, a period that could bring fever, or even catastrophe. When you encounter these dog days of summer or any period of tough fishing conditions, here are six points which may help you to be successful on the water. 1. Fish deep - Fish in water depths that are deeper than you have been. With the increased water temperature the fish will seek out their preferred water temperature range. This typically means deep and near the bottom. 2. Fish slow - The fish could be very lethargic in the warm water temperature. They are not going to chase down prey that is moving quickly. Slow down you artificial bait offering. 3. Be adaptable/versatile - In these situations we are each using three to five rods. Each rod has different artificial bait on it. We are attempting to find out what our game species is eating and at what specific depth within the water column. 4. Change lures - The key to inactive fish is sorting out what the fish is feeding on and at what speed they are willing to move to intercept that bait offering. Constantly change your lure. Do not be stubborn and stick with your favourite lure or the one that caught fish recently. Just like us, we do not eat the same food every feeding time. 5. Use live bait - We fish tournaments and therefore use artificial lures almost exclusively to become very proficient at using these baits no matter the fishing situation. But sometimes it takes live bait to entice a strike. Don’t hold back on going back to basics. Live bait smells and acts just like the real food should – live! 6. Fish cover/structure - Warm air temperature usually means sun and lots of it. Fish do not like to be out in these very sunny situations. Rather they will relate to cover or structure to avoid the high light density. Use your eyes and marine electronics to find high percentage locations where fish can sit in shady conditions and still ambush their prey easily. Do not become discouraged when experiencing periods of tough fishing conditions. Change your tactics and bait offerings and use your electronics to locate fish. Spend the time trying to locate game fish rather than just fishing in a familiar location. If you put in the time success will come your way.

SUNSCREEN FOR YOUR ENGINE.

CAR CARE CHRONICLES Cold iced tea, sunglasses, bare feet and grilling steaks on the barbeque are some of the simpler things in life that remind you summer is here. However, a sign of summer not to be forgotten is the dreaded sunburn. When your skin starts tingling, it's a tell-tale sign that tomorrow, you might be red, not tan. And if you are like me, this fact alone has you layering on the sunscreen. As it gets hot outside, the temperature also rises in your engine. Summer heat can send the thermometer inside your engine to 93 C (200 F) with some spots reaching 204 C (400 F), literally oven hot. It isn't hard to see summer heat can be devastating. Just like sunscreen is meant to protect your skin, synthetic oil protects your engine, especially in hot weather. Synthetic oil is more heat stable than conventional oils in terms of maintaining viscosity. This means that conventional oils are more prone to thinning out in hotter temperatures than synthetic oils. As motor oil thins, it loses its ability to protect critical engine components.

But what if you are using conventional oil? Does that mean that you have to hold off on the benefits of synthetic oil until you buy another car? No. You can switch back and forth from conventional to synthetic anytime you want. There is nothing special to do if you're going to switch. There is no flushing, no extra long draining to get the last drop. You just have to change your oil as you always do, but don't forget to tell the Service Advisor you want synthetic oil instead.

Luckily, synthetic oils have plenty of protection to offer, the components of the synthetic oil are more robust. This means it is more resistant to attacks from contaminants that enter the motor oil from regular, everyday driving. Because synthetic fights off those things that are attacking motor oil, they don't get a chance to create deposits and sludge. This helps your engine last longer and stay cleaner.

To protect your engine as summer rolls on, follow this simple piece of advice, borrowed from a famous song that debuted over a decade ago. Wear sunscreen. And while you lather yourself up with sunscreen this summer, make sure your engine has the same protection. If you don't, that is one sunburn that is going to sting for a long time.

Did you know you can use synthetic oil anytime? As long as there are no restrictions in your owners manual. There are very few instances where this can happen. Did you know that many vehicles come with synthetic oil direct from the factory? If yours is one of them, most likely the manufacturer will specify you keep using synthetic oil throughout the life of your vehicle.

COOLANT FACTS COOLANT is the most important fluid in your car. If your car were a human body, it would be the circulatory system. Coolant maintains the temperature of your engine and transmission. A coolant leak can cause your engine to overheat, which could lead to a costly repair. Here are 6 important things about coolant that you need to know: 1. COOLANT SMELLS SWEET, BUT IS LETHAL

Keep your container of coolant ( a.k.a. antifreeze ) on a high counter so that your kids or pets can't access it. You should also keep an eye on your dog if you spilled any on your driveway, it only takes a few tablespoons of coolant to poison your pet.

2. COOLANT COMES IN DIFFERENT COLOURS

Coolant comes in different shades because specific brands are made with various chemicals that are designed for different engines. These chemicals are not compatible. For example, Ethylene Glycol is green, and Dexcool is orange. If you combine them, you will get a gel-like substance that could cause your engine to overheat.

3. COOLANT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR AC

Sounds confusing right? Like why do we drive on a parkway and park in a driveway? Where were we - oh yeah, the words coolant and antifreeze can be used to describe the same product. It doesn't matter what terminology the packaging uses, the function of the fluid is to keep your hot engine and transmission cool when the vehicle is running. Antifreeze is to keep the engine from freezing in cold weather.

4. COOLANT SHOULD BE MIXED 50/50 WITH WATER

Some varieties are premixed solutions so you might not have to worry about this point. Coolant can't cool down your engine as efficiently as water can. Water could cause corrosion in your engine by itself. Corrosion will kill your engine. You get a perfect combination when you mix coolant with water together. You can use water by itself if you have a leak, but you need to get to a mechanic soon.

5. COOLANT PREVENTS OVERHEATING AND FREEZING

Like sweat cools the human body, coolant cools down the auto body. When your car reaches its operating temperature, a thermostat opens up and allows the coolant to flow through the engine. This prevents overheating, even though your engine can run at a boiling point of 212 degrees. Your car would break down (and leave you stranded on the side of the road) without this protection. Common causes of breakdowns are leaking, low coolant level and contamination.

6. COOLANT SHOULD BE CHECKED, FLUSHED AND FILLED EVERY 2 YEARS

If you try to wash dishes in dirty water, they won't come clean, would they? That is why we have to replace the water every now and then. The fluids in your car work the same way. Most car manufacturers recommend changing the coolant every 24-36 months. You can find out more information on when in your Owners Manual. This is only a general recommendation. You should consider your driving habits and climate. Most auto professionals recommend changing your coolant every year if you live in a hot environment. BOOK YOUR APPOINTMENT WITH CANADIAN TIRE AUTO SERVICE CENTRE FOR YOUR COOLANT FLUSH TODAY IF YOU CAN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME YOU CHANGED. IT WILL SAVE YOU MONEY DOWN THE ROAD OR BE THE DIFFERENCE OF NOT GOING DOWN THE ROAD AT ALL.

NATIONAL S'MORES DAY IS AUGUST 10!

S'mores are a favourite campfire treat for both young and old. If you are at a campfire, chances are so are s'mores. Sticky and gooey, loaded with sugar and carbs. They are nothing short of delicious. Who was the first person to create these yummy treats? We don't really know, but sure glad they did.

National S'mores Day celebrates these tasty summer treats. Appropriately observed in August. Campfire time. But don't limit your consumption of these treats to just around the campfire. They are popular all year long and can be baked in the oven or the microwave. The origin of S'mores dates back to about 1920. It is believed the recipe was created by the Campfire Girls. Girl Scouts soon discovered it and found its delicious chocolaty taste. Before long everyone was enjoying the taste. S'mores folklore suggests that they were named right by the campfire. After each one, kids would say, "Gimme me some more."

When you go out for coffee with Vic, expect people to stop and chat with him about his incredible artwork.

The man of great works.

Last month was no different. Vic and I had just finished visiting the Vic Gibbons Exhibit at Backus Heritage Conservation Area (which if you are interested, is running all summer in the Vic Gibbons Room) and headed to a coffee shop. Over the years Vic has donated numerous unique nature scenes (prints and originals) to Backus of which many are now on display. I grabbed this shot of Vic with of one of his many masterpieces, Great Horned Owl. Brandon Good, Park Supervisor, explained the art on display reflects the many diverse animals you can find at Backus. The exhibit is entitled, The Backus Field Guide and is now open to the public Wednesdays to Sundays 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Labour Day. Anyway, we stopped in Port Rowan to grab a coffee, and by the time I came back to the table with the beverages, Vic was chatting with a lady from Burlington. Then to his right, a group of men asked if he was Vic Gibbons, the painter. Vic smiled... Well, so much for coffee!

To see some of Vic's great pieces, stop by Backus Heritage Conservation Area and visit the Vic Gibbons Exhibit!

TIPS & ADVICE RUNNING TOILETS = RUNNING MONEY

Constantly Running Toilets Living in the country and having our water brought in, we are acutely aware of just how much water we are using. I remember a few years ago having a toilet that was continually running, costing money, and in the country, it can have devastating results, upsetting the septic ecosystem. At that time there were a couple of things that could have been contributing factors, such as a stuck open flapper or a float issue. In my case, it was a faulty chain on the flapper that needed to be replaced. It was simple to do, and I was no longer flushing my money away. The hard-working trio at The World of Plumbing has many inexpensive parts and kits to fix that running on feeling with your toilet. So run on down to The World of Plumbing and let the guys help you keep your $$$ in your pocket instead of down the drain.

THE 80/20 BALANCE Does It Work For You? BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

WHY MIGHT A NUTRITION CONSULT BE RIGHT FOR YOU? Nutrition and Lifestyle choices don't necessarily come easy to most people - as much as we would like there to be, there is no "One Size Fits All" plan. Last month, my article discussed Macronutrients and Serving sizes as an overview, to discuss concepts that may be new to you. When my Clients book a consult, we go over very specific and unique details from all facets of their life, to determine health care strategies that are specific to their individual goals and needs. Balance is a key feature in any plan - I like implementing and encouraging an 80/20 method. It empowers you to make health conscious (nutrient dense foods as fuel), supportive choices at least 80% of the time and allows fun foods as about 20% of your total intake - provided your overall state of health is good and stable. When we are experiencing health issues, this balance still may not be appropriate to assist your body with the necessary tools to correct the concern. WHY DO OUR FOOD CHOICES MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE? When our food is chosen as fuel first, the food energy supports healthy function and metabolism at the cellular level and can result in better levels of energy and vitality.

Choosing foods that are of lesser nutritional value, means more work for the body to do to rid itself of harmful substances and less available nutrients to support our healthy cells. This can manifest as a variety of issues - perhaps fatigue, joint pain, headaches, digestive issues and eventually, if nutritional status is poor enough, chronic, degenerative disease and more rapid aging processes. HOW MUCH FOOD DO WE REQUIRE?

Individual requirements will be influenced by any number of variables and these requirements will change over the course of our lifetime, many times over. Activity levels, growth stages, convalescence due to illness or injury are just a few scenarios that may change the number of calories and breakdown of macronutrients we may require. Regardless of food choices, if your calorie intake exceeds your expenditure of energy, your body will store it as fat! Find your Sensible K.N.A.C. Approach and see what empowered eating can do for you! Barb Anstead Holistic Nutritionist healthywellandwise.ca

DON'T

SWEAT THE SMALL THINGS

Race season is upon us. Many folks tend to overthink when they are at the start line. At times we become our own worst enemy. As the minutes tick down to the start gun, we fret, "What if I am too slow? Oh my, I will never beat that person. I should just start near the back. Did I choose the wrong distance? Should I have worn my other shoes?" We all do it! It is our own self-imposed head games. Don't sweat the small issues, they are out of your control! Don't worry. If you put your training in, you will be fine! Relax! Think positive excitement! My best races always happen when I do any easy warm-up and focus on all the training I have done. I walk up to the start line knowing I have put the time in. The work has been done, and now it is time to have fun and enjoy a hard run! Forget the other runners. You are running your own race, not theirs! Of course, always smile when you cross the finish line; the job is done, no looking back, no regrets!

NORFOLK

MEETING

IT'S GAIL'S

FLIP-FLOPS ROCK! They keep your feet cool, they're easy to throw on, and they come in a zillion colours and styles that just about anyone can love. Flip-flops are also pretty terrible for your feet! Wearing flip-flops is better than going barefoot because they do provide some protection for the bottoms of your feet, but that's about it. The BAD about flip-flops: They can change the way wearers walk, sometimes permanently and those changes can wreak havoc on the rest of the body, with distinct and noticeable effects on everything from the wearer's posture to their gait. While driving your vehicle, flip-flops can slip off your feet and get stuck under the gas or brake pedal. Don't wear flip-flops for running, hiking, walking long distances, standing for a long time or playing sports. They do not provide support to the arches of the foot (lateral, medial and metatarsal) and they can cause foot strain and fatigue. Flip-flops are the number one group of footwear that causes dangerous slips and fall accidents and injuries (number two is the pencil heel and thirdly is the wedge heel). On a positive note, flip-flops were designed to wear at the beach, around swimming pools, in showers and locker rooms at the gym to protect the foot from contracting warts, and athlete's foot.

Here are some commonly asked questions regarding Sleep Apnea & CPAP Q: WILL I HAVE TO USE CPAP FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE? A: In most situations, yes. As a general rule, Sleep Apnea is not curable, it is treatable. It is treated by using a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) unit. There are situations where the severity of your Sleep Apnea can decrease and your CPAP pressure may be adjusted accordingly. For this reason, it is important to keep regular biannual check-ups with your sleep physician. If it has been more than 2 years since you last saw a sleep physician, make an appointment to see them. Q: IS SLEEP APNEA AN INHERITED TRAIT? A: Yes. In most causes of Sleep Apnea, it will be something you likely inherited and something that you will likely pass on. If you have immediate family members who suffer from Sleep Apnea and you have any signs/symptoms of it, it is likely that you also have Sleep Apnea and should see a physician. Q: WHEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY CPAP MASK? A: it is recommended that most masks be replaced on an annual basis. While you may think your mask looks okay, if it is being worn nightly, it should be replaced every year. Even with daily cleaning, once a CPAP mask is a year old, it becomes difficult to get it clean and properly remove any bacteria. As it ages, the seal and the headgear become worn out, stretched out and no longer fit/seal effectively.

Q: I WEAR MY CPAP MASK, ALL NIGHT AND I’M STILL SNORING, WHY? A: There are 2 possible reasons for this. The first possibility is that you are experiencing a mouth leak and thus you are not getting the full benefit of your CPAP, which will allow you to snore again. The first thing to do to resolve this is to look at adjusting or changing your mask. If you are using a nasal mask, switching to a full face mask will often resolve this. If you are using a full mask it may be leaking or no long fitting properly. The best thing to do is to visit Absolute Respiratory and discuss your mask options and mask fit. The second possible reason for your snoring is that your CPAP pressure is no longer accurate for your needs. Absolute Respiratory can assist you with this by discussing your CPAP settings with your sleep lab. Whatever the cause of this, visit Absolute Respiratory and we will be glad to assist you. - Lyndsey Ross, RRT, BSc.

When most people think of a Chiropractor their thoughts immediately jump to issues with their low back neck, spine etc. A Chiropractor is perhaps the last place you would think to go to relieve your jaw pain. However Chiropractors are very efficient in the diagnosis and treatment of jaw (TMJ) dysfunctions and pain. WHAT IS TMJ? TMJ stands for the Temporomandibular joint. It’s an important joint formed by your skull and your jaw bone and involves the muscles needed for chewing. Your TMJ acts like a sliding hinge, and connects your jawbone to your skull. It is responsible for opening and closing your mouth, allowing the jaw to move smoothly up and down and side to side, and enables you to talk, chew, and yawn. Dysfunctions of the TMJ are referred to as Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) which are characterized by pain and stiffness on one or both sides of the jaw. The jaw may also lock or get stuck in either a closed or open position. Patients may also notice a popping, clicking, or grating sound in the jaw when chewing, yawning, or when closing/opening their mouth. They may also have trouble chewing and even experience swelling. SYMPTOMS OF TMJ Trouble opening & closing mouth • Jaw locking, clicking or popping • Headaches • Pain in the jaw • Pain in the neck or face • Difficulty chewing • Ear pain TMD HAS BEEN LINKED TO TRAUMA TO THE NECK, SUCH AS WITH WHIPLASH, BUT IT ALSO CAN BE CAUSED BY: Arthritis in the jaw • Grinding the teeth • Chewing gum • Stress that causes clenching of the jaw • Movement of the disc, or soft cushion, that lies between the socket and ball of the jaw • Ill fitting dental fillings, crowns, dentures etc. HOW CAN I MANAGE TMJ PAIN? There are conservative steps that you can take to treat or reverse TMJ- related pain: Eating softer foods • Applying ice packs • Avoiding extreme jaw movements • Gentle stretching of the jaw • Learning techniques to relax and reduce stress CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT CAN INCLUDE: Spinal manipulative therapy • Soft tissue therapy • Exercises • Myofacial release • Cold laser treatment

While all these theories are being studied, researchers are finding more evidence that the "altered neuromuscular control" hypothesis is the principal pathophysiological mechanism that leads to exerciseassociated muscle cramping (EAMC). Altered neuromuscular control is often related to muscle fatigue and results in a disruption of muscle coordination and control. TREATMENT

HEAT CRAMPS This time of year, folks are out exercising and working in the sun, and one of the everyday occurrences is muscle cramps! Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms that occur in the arms, legs, or abdomen that usually happen after several hours of exertion in the heat. In addition to muscle cramps, other symptoms of heat cramps may include faintness, dizziness, weakness, and excessive sweating. Usually, an athlete suffers from heat cramps after several hours of exertion and excessive sweating that results in dehydration. CAUSES The exact cause of heat cramps is unknown, but the theories most commonly cited include: • Altered neuromuscular control • Electrolyte depletion • Muscle fatigue

• Dehydration • Poor conditioning • Doing a new activity

Muscle cramps are more common during exercise in the heat because sweat contains fluids as well as electrolytes (salt, potassium, magnesium, and calcium). When these nutrients, particularly sodium, fall to certain levels due to excessive sweating, the incidence of heat cramps increase.

As soon as you recognize any of the symptoms of heat illness, take the following actions: • Stop activity and sit quietly in a cool place. • Drink a sports beverage with electrolytes (you can make you own sodium-based solution with 1/4 teaspoon table salt mixed in a quart of water). • Gently stretch and massage the cramping muscle. • Hold the joint in a stretched position until the cramp stops. • Seek medical attention for heat cramps if they don't subside in 1 hour. Most muscle cramps are not serious. If your muscle cramps are severe, frequent, constant or of concern, see your doctor. FROM THE CHAIR. I am the type of guy who buys the 3 in 1 soap. You know, shampoo, face and body wash. Apparently, Laura, the wonderful lady who monthly, somehow makes my hair look amazing, thought it best to educate me on the reasons I need to use a better quality shampoo and conditioner. Laura explained… One significant reason to buy professional products is that your stylist knows your hair. They can recommend the right products for your hair type and style so that you can efficiently manage styling your hair on your own. Another benefit we offer here at Blade Salon is that if you are ever not satisfied with a product you purchased at our salon, you can bring it back and exchange it for something else! Quality shampoos are more concentrated, you don't need to use as much to see results, which means your products will last longer. Thanks Laura for the excellent advice!

TIPS FOR PREVENTING SHIN SPLINTS With the nice weather already upon us, our legs are ready to run, jump, swim and hike, however, getting into too much, too soon, with incorrect training methods can cause some uncomfortable side effects. Tibial Stress Syndrome, also known as Shin splints, is a stress injury more commonly involving the tibialis anterior and is typically developed after physical activity. Shin splints is not a serious condition and is prevalent among runners or after activities involving high impact stress on the feet and legs. Understanding common symptoms, simple prevention strategies and treatment methods, can help keep your training regime on track, whether you're a seasoned walker or elite competitor. Tibial Stress Syndrome can occur in the posterior or anterior aspect of the shin and occurs when muscles are unable to heal properly before repetitive force is placed on the area again, causing tibial strain. Pain can commonly be described as vague and dull at first but can rapidly progress without halting exertion. Common physiotherapy methods, including manual soft tissue treatments and ultrasound technology, can help progress recovery and release tension through the affected area. Also, applying ice to the area for 10-15 minutes every 3-4 hours is a simple, at home method to keep inflammation and swelling under control.

Hayley Paterson, HBKin

Prevention strategies to take into account while exercising to avoid the onset of shin splints include wearing appropriate footwear that supports your specific arch type, training on softer ground like grass or a track instead of sidewalks to reduce impact, and allowing rest in between training sessions to avoid overuse. Shin splints is an injury that can be avoided with proper methods but if you need any help along the way, Great Lakes Physiotherapy is there to keep you moving.

The great thing about living in Norfolk is that somehow or other we all know each other! As I pulled up a chair at Simcoe VW, Brett Rusling passed me his card. My first thought was of Ali Rusling, who worked at our summer camp years ago. So I asked Brett, "Is your sister Alison?" He replied, "Yep, you know her?" I explained our work connection, and from there our conversation revolved around the Rusling family. Brett tells me he has always been a car and motorcycle guy (he was dirt biking at seven!). After graduating from Western University last year, Brett started working at Simcoe VW, detailing and shuttling cars. Six months later an opportunity in sales opened up, and he jumped at it, becoming a Sales and Lease Advisor. Brett is full of enthusiasm and is learning every day. He enjoys helping folks solve their car needs. Brett wants to remind everyone when you are shopping for a new or used car to do your due diligence and find the right fit for you.
