ADAPT According to Mirriam-Webster, adapt, “implies a modification according to changing circumstances.” The art of fishing requires each angler to adapt as the fish’s environment, the fish’s behaviour and the weather conditions constantly are changing. In a previous article earlier this year, I discussed the effects of new water levels of the Great Lakes on our fishing locations. Places where we found fish in the past were not holding fish this year. The Cambridge Dictionary describes adapt as, “to change, or to change something, to suit different conditions or uses,” or “to change your ideas or behaviour to make them suitable for a new situation.” I like this definition as it best describes our every day as an angler as we head to the water, whether it’s a lake, stream, river or pond. The behaviour of the fish itself is one of the most important elements that a successful angler must adjust to and understand. We need to fully recognize that there is not a single person who can understand a fish’s activities. We might think so, but the fish will tell us otherwise. Fish behaviour is very complicated. The nature of a response of an individual fish to stimuli from its environment depends upon the inherited characteristics of its nervous system, on what it has learned from past experience, and on the nature of the stimuli. In order to be successful on the water, it is now your responsibility to determine what it is that will stimulate the fish to take your bait. This is where being adaptable pays off. Is it water temperature, water depth, speed of bait presentation or the presentation method that will trigger the strike? Food is the primary concern of all fish. Their existence is entirely dependent upon obtaining enough to survive. Knowing what a fish prefers to eat at all given times of the year and presenting artificial lures and live bait to them in the most natural manner is vitally important in order to catch them consistently. Each species of fish has its own comfort zone, preferring certain bottom types, water temperatures, light conditions, depths and cover structure. Clean hard bottoms with firm sand, gravel, rock and weeds are generally characteristic of good fish habitat. Areas of mud and silt are often barren of fish and should be avoided. Fish do not like sunlight and therefore seek out deep, dark water during the bright, calm days. Look for areas of weed growth, submerged stumps, trees, logs, as well as, docks. The amount of light penetration varies with sky conditions, wind effect and water clarity. So don’t waste your efforts in water that contains too serving Lake erie Boaters much light. “Learning how to adapt in the real world isn’t a task that can be programmed,” Fortune, eBay CEO; July 20, 2019. I cannot stress enough about constantly changing live bait, artificial lures, presentation techniques and water depths and areas until you find the answer to the fish developed equation. It is what makes hunting for fish so rewarding. Reap those benefits! Larry can be reached at lmello1647@rogers.com

Record Store Day What exactly is it? Where is it? Why is there a Record Store Day anyway?

OXFORD COUNT Y

Here you go. In a nutshell, RSD celebrates the culture of independently owned record stores across the world.

welcome to

Often when someone hears the term Record Store Day, it can conjure up different meanings to different people.

Introduced in 2008 and typically held on the third Saturday in April and every Black Friday in November, this fast growing event brings together thousands of record stores world wide. Each event boasts an impressive list of “limited edition” vinyl records that are pressed specifically for the event and distributed only to participating shops.

THE HUB SIMON STEELE, Massage Therapist and Personal Trainer, is owner/operator of Steele Health + Wellness Centre, located in the Princess Street Professional Building in Woodstock. He has a life-long passion for health and well being. For over 20 years, he has been seeking and learning how to be the best he can be and to provide ways to promote health and well being in others.

Anticipation for each new list of titles grows with each event. Some stores, such as ours in Downtown Woodstock, enhance the celebration with live music throughout the day from local bands and artists, as well as storewide sales to encourage the less enthusiastic shoppers to join in the fun. RSD is growing in popularity with each passing year just like the vinyl record format. Baby boomers relish the memories of days passed and millennials are flocking through the door with a strong appetite for the warmth of vinyl that the digital world will never possess. RSD is truly a one of a kind triumph.

COMFORT A NATURAL WAY OF DOING BUSINESS

Besides the storefront, Wild Comfort is also a familiar sight at several area markets each week, including the Woodstock Farmer’s Market, the Ancaster Farmer’s Market, and the Stratford Slow Food Market. And although Paluska doesn’t have formal marketing training, her brand is growing well because it is a reflection of her values. “People want to know how their stuff is made,” says Paluska. While her products aren’t 100% organic, the ingredients are ethically sourced and fair trade is a priority. Customers can also bring in their empty bottles to either the market or the store for refilling, which is environmentally-friendly.

GROW TH OPPORTUNITIES

by Leanne Beattie

To help expand her business, Paluska has started holding workshops at her farm in conjunction with Dr. Kristina

Walk into Wild Comfort on Gunn’s Hill Road and you’re immediately surrounded by the clean, fresh herbal scent. Rows of handmade soap line the shelves, along with bath bombs and teas, deodorant, serums and face creams, all made with natural ingredients.

Dekroon, a Woodstock naturopath, and she hopes to someday grow her own ingredients. She also holds intensive soap-making workshops where guests can develop the colour, shape and design of their own personalized soap using the base that Paluska provides.

The owner Danielle Paluska never meant to open a natural products business. Originally a mental health professional, Paluska was at a crossroads in her career in 2014 and decided to take a 3-month break. She began making soap as part of her goal to do something creative every day and soon realized she wouldn’t be returning to her job. Wild Comfort was launched a few months later.

A WAY O F L I F E

LEARNING AND IMPROVING The creativity that comes with designing natural products is Paluska’s biggest joy, and she loves making products that are less processed and artificial. She continues to take chemistry classes online to be able to create better skincare formulations, and she likes to experiment with ingredients to find out what would happen if she added something different to the mix. For example, she learned that adding salt to a product at a different time created a much thicker consistency. It wasn’t something she planned, but it turned out better than the way she was doing it before.

“My first bar of soap wasn’t pretty,” Paluska says. “But I had a vision for my family, for what kind of life and work I wanted to have. People thought I was crazy to buy this farm and put so much work into it,“ she continues. “But I saw the potential here. Taking something broken and making it better is part of who I am.” Wild Comfort is located at 445300 Gunn's Hill Road, Woodstock, Ontario N4S 7V8, and is open Wednesdays noon until 5 pm, Fridays noon until 5 pm, and Saturdays 1 pm until 4 pm. Visit https://wildcomfort.ca for more information or to buy online. Leanne Beattie began her writing career as a freelance journalist in Owen Sound, Guelph and Fergus. She later moved into corporate communications and marketing where she worked in the high tech and financial sectors. She now owns Creativity That Sells (www. creativitythatsells.com), a content marketing business based in Port Stanley.

For many years I ate out of necessity and thought little of my body! I thought that no matter what I put into my body, my body would take the nutrition out and use it as the fuel it needs. I thought that I was a good provider, giving my body a variety of foods from which it would pick and choose what it needed, and that I was doing the right thing. Wrong! I was a good provider of carbohydrates, starches and especially sugar. All of these can be beneficial in small doses, but today's standard diet is filled with these items in excess of what is useful and needed. When the body is overwhelmed with these, chronic illness, inflammation, disease, and dis-ease will set in. Many of these symptoms are thought to be a part of normal ageing. And are even showing up much earlier in life and affecting our children as well. Many of these symptoms are a result of modify-able variables, and in result - we are what we eat. Yes, there are things that can happen to us that do cause us to live in pain, illness, and compromised health and wellbeing. However, what if what we are experiencing could actually be changed?

your experience of life. Together let's explore, learn and grow in new understanding, and experience through nutrition. Join me each month as we explore the world of nutrition, wellness, and well-being. The journey begins with each new day and each new step along the way. I look forward to hearing from you with your thoughts, questions and results. It is never too late to make changes that will change your life.

Our family had this one friend that we all enjoyed hanging out with, and today I want to share a little bit about him and the influence he had on our lives! We all have that buddy we can share our innermost thoughts with, and there is no judgement. You know, the friend you can go for a walk with silently when you are feeling a little down. That pal who is just there for you whenever you ask. Sure, occasionally he might be a bit loud, expressing himself without a care of who may hear him, but that is who he is! This guy would always let you buy when it came to grabbing a bite to eat... and he could eat! At any given time, he had our backs, especially if someone was giving us a hard time. A trip to the beach with this friend of mine was never turned down. He usually acted like a small child playing in the sand and swimming in the lake! It could be embarrassing, to say the least. Of course, he would approach any girls that went by and say hi in his own way‌ he liked to flirt! His hygiene left a bit to be desired! But hey, no one is perfect! I knew this guy his whole life, and he never ceased to amaze me. In his younger days, he always seemed to be in trouble! He had this thing for bananas, sometimes he would politely ask for one, but usually, he would just help himself! For the last while, he had been hanging out with another mutual friend, who was very shy. My buddy soon had an influence on him, and suddenly both of them were taking off to the beach, not letting anyone know where they were. They would eventually get back to the house, helping themselves to whatever was in the fridge or on the counter... never cleaning up after themselves. Then he started hanging out with my son, Lirum, a lot. I had my concerns because Lirum seemed to fall under his spell, and soon they were running buddies. The last thing I needed was my 5-year-old (at the time) listening to this guy whose only goal was to have fun any way possible. Over the last 14 years, the two of them were inseparable. They were always there for each other, even covering for each other when an excuse was needed. They were known for wandering in the woods on adventures, or for heading for the water to play, get dirty, lay in the sand or just hang out together. Occasionally they would take the car and go for ice cream. They were a team. For all of us in our family, he was a friend like no other and will be missed! You see our old dog, Moca, passed away recently. He was such a strong presence in our house. His unwavering loyalty and love will be cherished. I am so glad my kids, Monica and I were able to be part of his amazing life. My morning walks won't be the same, but I will keep talking, and I know he will be there listening! We miss you, Moca!

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

IT DOESN'T LAST FOREVER “There’s something about knowing life is finite that makes it so precious.”

- Ethan Hawke

My friend Helen passed away a week ago. We were great compatriots during my last eight years teaching, sharing theories, thoughts and many fun times along with the hard work. She was a strong and principled teacher, an athlete and an Outward Bound leader. Twice we ran the Toronto Half Marathon together. When injuries meant that she could no longer enjoy running, she took up lawn bowling. Within a very few years, she won the Ontario Women’s Championship. I call up the sound of her fabulous laugh frequently these days. Helen was only 53. How are we to deal with the finite nature of so much that we cherish? It is a fact of life that time passes. Loss, at many levels, is inevitable. Much does not last as long as we wish it would. As I age, I am more and more aware of the inherently temporary nature of much of what fills my life. I am glad that I did not have such thoughts when I was young, even though I had to endure some tragic deaths early in my life. It seems to me I’ve always known what death is but I viewed my own journey as extending into a never-ending, positive future. I figured

everything would somehow just take care of itself. With a bit of work, and a lot of luck, it has. Now, as my horizons are contracting, I am trying to determine my purpose. All around me people and opportunities are passing or, at the least, passing out of my life. I worry about what I still have and still treasure. I look at my dog and wonder what it will be like for her when she gets old and loses her ability to jump in the car, her zest to chase rabbits and eventually her life. I worry about losing my own health, mentally and physically, as I do about my family and friends. I have such thoughts much more than the younger me did. Right now may well be the best it will ever be from this point forward. Somehow we have to remain vital and engaged, not letting ourselves be consumed by pessimism. I believe that worry is basically a misuse of the imagination. Even though not much lasts forever, and one day all that encompasses my life will be gone, I feel that it is important for me to make the best of what I have. Knowing something is transitory means it needs to be appreciated while it is available. At times it means fighting with determination to remain positive. I try to remember what it must have been like to hear the recess bell ring, say in the spring of my grade 6 year, be dismissed, and run as hard as I could to the far field to get one of the three hitters’ spots for our daily games of baseball work-ups. We would all sprint flat-out from the moment we stepped out through the double doors. If such a game were to be played today, I would have to massage joint relief cream into my knees, remove my shoe to put on the knee brace, fit my foot back into the shoe, use my arms for strength and balance to lift myself from the student desk, walk gingerly to the door, descend the steps one tread at a time while holding onto the brick wall, walk part of the distance working my way up to a slow, stiff-

legged jog as I headed toward right field, the last position in our game of work-ups. I might arrive at my position only to realize that I had forgotten my glove or the hat I need to wear to protect against recurring bouts of skin cancer. In all likelihood, recess would be over by the time I was ready to begin playing. But I like to think that every day I would still be trying to be part of the game. I hope I would never say that it is not worth trying, that I should just sit at my desk during recess. And maybe that’s the point. When we age some things will be more challenging. But hasn’t life always been a series of challenges, broken up by periods of pure joy. It is simply that the challenges evolve. We have somehow conquered or survived them before, so let’s continue to do so. We are able to continue to learn, to meet new people, to have new experiences and to develop new perspectives. Let’s try to make the best of it to the utmost of our ability. For me, it helps immeasurably to still have goals. It is the pursuit of these goals, not their attainment that is key, even if a little selfdelusion is needed along the way. I think that’s fine. In my case, a major goal is returning to my favourite race, 3 Days at the Fair in New Jersey, to try to chase down some more records. In order to accomplish this, I will have to build my training back up, add in more running, and be willing to push myself through tough sessions during our long, uncompromising winter. I will find out if I am still up to it. Because of my knee issues, the likelihood of falls has increased. The thought of permanently wearing shin pads has crossed my mind, but at the moment I am still hoping I will become a little more flexible and a little more careful. One must, I must, face the future with a sense of wonder and of optimism.

With the sun slowly setting in the background, the warm feel of the water, a slight chop dancing of the side of the kayak, I quietly pulled my phone out and snapped a few shots as the shadows fell around my wife and two kids… I guess I should say our adult kids now. We were all out for a paddle, and it had been a long time since we had all been on the water together!

I was wrong, our daughter headed off to university and ended spending her summers in Ottawa. Our son took on a part-time job, and soon he was off to hang out with his friends and began paddling whitewater. Huh… just like that, everything changed!

But this night, all of us were back at home and on the water. Our son had a break from guiding on the Boy, had it really been almost five years since the last Madawaska and Ottawa rivers, and our daughter was time I snapped similar photos? Back then, it was a home for the summer. weekly summer occurrence for us to drag the boats Snapping the picture of their silhouettes created and head out together. Friends would stop by for the illusion of those kids five years ago… laughing, Friday night paddles, and a warming fire after was the splashing, racing, and swimming, all of us relaxed on norm. The kids were so young then! Life had not yet the water. become a series of jobs, school, with all of us busy in our own direction. I just assumed we would do it every For a moment, just a moment, my world was perfect summer. again!

'LATE FALL' by: Vic Gibbons

The man of great works.

The cooler morning air reminds us that fall is not that far off! Vic captured that early morning feeling in this piece entitled, Late Fall. The traditional, countryside barn takes centre stage, reminding us of our roots from many years ago. The warm-hearted feeling created around this painting takes us back to a simpler time, with the rustic wagon peacefully resting among the golden pastures and the timeworn fencepost with the wire dangling loosely in the slight fall breeze. The birch trees stand strong and firm to finish off this captivating piece. Give Vic a call if you are interested in purchasing one of the last prints of this classic!

HAIRCARE ROUTINE

HOURS Mon - Fri 9am - 8pm Sat 9am - 5pm Sun 11am - 4:30pm

Now that the summer is coming to an end, it's time to switch up your haircare routine. If your hair is long you have probably had it up in a ponytail more than usual, which is great for the hot, summer months, but not always so great for your hair as they can cause added stress and damage to the hair. Time to let those locks down and give your hair a break. No matter what, you should get a haircut to clean up your ends at least every 8 to 12 weeks. A summer of sun exposure can leave your hair damaged and fried. And, the longer your hair, the more susceptible you are to breakage. Call us to book a trim to get those damaged ends off, or to get a fresh new style. While you're here consider having a L'Oréal Powermix treatment. An amazing conditioning treatment that only takes 5 minutes. The results are immediate and last up to 10 shampoos, and even longer if you use the prescribed home maintenance. 355 Main St, Port Dover, ON N0A 1N0 www.bladesalon.ca 519-583-2021

SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIES FOR

BACK TO SCHOOL BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

EVERYDAY TOOLS AND STRATEGIES WHY BUILD A PLAN FOR BACK TO SCHOOL? Perhaps you are doing the happy dance and maybe you are dragging your feet and feeling melancholy – the approach of fall and back to school means many things to a great many people. Summer is winding down and with that, the daylight hours are getting shorter and for those of us especially in the Northern Hemisphere, our exposure to fresh air, school holidays and sunshine is done for another season. Whether you are a student, parent, grandparent or any form of caregiver to children, there is a great deal of adaptation to take place as our teachers and educational professionals once again take centre stage on the journey of scholastic enlightenment and opportunity. Any classroom, workplace or institutional setting takes little encouragement to become a petri dish for opportunistic viruses and bacteria. When it comes to germs, children are pros at sharing – you don’t even have to ask with a “pretty please.” Indoor recycled air, crowded classrooms and a multitude of surfaces for everyone to take turns touching can challenge the immune systems of even the heartiest individual and this can be exceptionally challenging when your youngster begins bringing home more than just their homework. Many people are much more vulnerable to becoming infected – the very young, the elderly, those with chronic health conditions, immune compromised systems, nursing home residents, preschoolers, those under prolonged stress or suffering lack of sleep, those with poor nutritional status or low economic status are just a few examples of those that may be targeted the most quickly and aggressively by any form of infectious organism. Lost time from school or work can be a great challenge to families and their workplace – from a health, performance and financial aspect.

Avoidance of illness can be facilitated by the implementation of prevention and maintaining solid lifestyle strategies. Plentiful nutrient dense foods, plenty of clean water, exercise, fresh air, positive social interaction, quality sleep and maintaining personal hygiene are foundational components of health. There is no replacement for thorough and frequent handwashing with soap and water. Over reliance on hand sanitizers can reduce the natural friendly microbiome on our skin, our friendly bacteria are critical to good health both inside and out. Reducing sugar and processed foods can help more than you may imagine in terms of immune health, performance and attention span. Supplements may play a huge role for some individuals to optimize or correct their ability to function and perform. At Dover Apothecary, we carry a wide variety of quality products and have the professional guidance to support and assist you and your family in selecting the appropriate products and the therapeutic level required to meet your unique needs. Nutritional consults can be booked at my home office and the Apothecary and may be covered by some private insurance carriers as well. Some of the most commonly used supplements are Vitamin D3, Omega 3, Probiotics, Multivitamins, Magnesium, and L-Theanine. If concentration and behaviour problems are a concern, there are many strategies and products you may wish to discuss along with a Neurotechnology I have brought into my practice with great success! QUESTION: HOW DOES UNTREATED SLEEP APNEA AFFECT MY HEART? ANSWER: When you have Sleep Apnea, your airway collapses, and you stop breathing. When this happens

the oxygen in your blood decreases (and carbon dioxide increases). A drop in your blood oxygen levels and an increase in carbon dioxide levels result in less oxygen being delivered to your heart. Over time, this continual decrease in oxygen and rise in carbon dioxide will cause irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmia’s), cardiac hypertrophy (which is the enlargement of the heart muscles and tissues) and even complete heart failure. The existence of any of these conditions can also lead to high blood pressure and increased heart rates. This is why often, when someone is diagnosed with sleep apnea, they may be experiencing mild or severe heart conditions. If the sleep apnea is treated, these conditions are often reversible and treatable. It is important to remember that treating your sleep apnea will affect your entire body health. ACCESSORY NAVICULAR AND FOOT PAIN An accessory bone is an extra bone or piece of fibrous cartilage that develops in the body, especially noted in the foot where there are many ossification areas and articulations. Although accessory growths are uncommon, the navicular bone located on the medial aspect of the foot is a site that can be particularly affected. Accessory navicular bones are fairly uncommon, affecting mostly children aged 8-15 due to growth and development and can sometimes be asymptomatic, however, depending on the size and shape of the growth Accessory Navicular Syndrome can occur. Individuals can have an accessory bone that does not cause pain to the area, often unaware it exists, yet some can cause aggravation to the posterior tibial tendon resulting in Accessory Navicular Syndrome. Symptoms of Accessory Navicular Syndrome can be characterized by a bony prominence on the inner side of the foot above the arch as well as redness and swelling in that area, throbbing or vague pain in the midfoot which is usually more noticeable after activity and the onset of fallen arches. Footwear is a big consideration when dealing with this condition as the constant rubbing will prolong aggravation with proper support for pain management being beneficial. Orthotic and physiotherapy methods can also aid in reducing symptoms and decreasing pain with various techniques. Surgical intervention to remove the accessory bone is sometimes necessary if chronic pain is an issue. However, orthotic interventions and correct strengthening exercises can manage pain and maintain daily performance. Orthotics work by providing support to the arch while also reducing friction along the affected area, decreasing aggravation. Physiotherapy methods including strength and conditioning of the peroneal and posterior tibialis muscle, gait-retraining and stability exercises as well as soft tissue therapy to reduce pain. Great Lakes Physiotherapy is happy to offer orthotic and physiotherapy services that can treat Accessory Navicular Syndrome and various other foot conditions.

WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY IS ON SEPTEMBER 10, 2019 The theme of this year’s campaign is “WORKING TOGETHER TO PREVENT SUICIDE” Many different situations and experiences can lead someone to consider suicide. Known risk factors for suicide include: • A previous suicide attempt • Family history of suicidal behaviour • A physical/mental illness • Problems with drugs or alcohol • A major loss, or significant change in a person’s life • Social isolation or lack of a support network • Access to the means of suicide • Ongoing exposure to traumatic and violent situations While we often think of suicide in relation to depression, anxiety, and substance use problems, any mental illness may increase the risk of suicide. It’s also important to remember that suicide may not be related to any mental illness. WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS? If someone you know is showing one or more of the following behaviours, he or she may be thinking about suicide. Don’t ignore these warning signs. Get help immediately. • Talking about wanting to die • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain • Talking about being a burden to others • Increase in alcohol or drug use, and other high-risk behaviour • Sleeping too little or too much • Withdrawing or feeling isolated • Displaying extreme mood swings • Sudden calmness (which may indicate a person is ready to end their life) HOW CAN I HELP A LOVED ONE? If you’re concerned about someone else, talk with them. Ask them directly if they’re thinking about suicide. Talking about suicide won’t give them the idea. If someone is seriously considering suicide, they may be relieved that they can talk about it. The two most important things you can do are listen and help them connect with mental health services. A MADE IN CANADA APPROACH TO DEALING WITH THE EFFECTS OF STRESS 70% of primary care visits are driven by the patient's psychological problems, including mood, anxiety, panic and stress. The tool bag of the naturopathic doctor contains a variety of modalities and one subset of these tools consists of adaptogenic herbs. We'd like to introduce you to one wellresearched adaptogenic herb, Rhodiola rosea, specifically, Canadian cultivated Rhodiola rosea and a new natural health product that is made from it, RhozivaTM.

STAY CALM AND CARRY ON Rhoziva Teens - a blend of medicinal plant extracts and vitamins, designed to help with cognitive function by supporting memory and concentration. It alleviates stress and supports brain health. Supports mood related issues, anxiousness, restlessness and feeling down.

VITAMIN MINERAL SUPPORT The brain is a highly metabolic organ. Twenty-five percent of the total energy produced by the cells in the human body are produced by the brain. This high requirement for energy allows the brain to perform neurological, cognitive and emotive functions. Iodine and selenium are needed to optimize thyroid hormone production, the hormone that initiates the energy production process in the brain. Low thyroid function is associated with reduced focus, concentration and poor mood. B vitamins, along with a variety of minerals such as magnesium, zinc, copper and manganese are essential for energy production. The fat soluble vitamins A, D and E are needed for healthy cognitive function and good mood. Vitamin E and A specifically help protect the brain from oxidation from harmful cooking oil, widely present in fast food and packaged foods.

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC? The World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) has defined chiropractic as: “A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation.” Put simply, chiropractors are spine, muscle and nervous system experts specifically trained to diagnose the underlying cause and recommend treatment options to relieve pain, restore mobility and prevent reoccurrence without surgery or pharmaceuticals.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? The musculoskeletal system supports your weight, provides physical stability, enables you to move your body, and protects your vital organs.

BENEFITS OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE INCLUDE: • Improved movement in your neck, shoulders, back and torso • Better posture • Relief from headaches, neck and back pain • Prevention of work-related muscle and joint injuries • Enhanced athletic performance • Improved flexibility • Relief of pregnancy-related backache • Correction of gait and foot problems Dr. Dwayne Willaert, Dr. Bruce Veltri, Dr. Lance Willaert

It has unequivocally affected every aspect of my life and caused a lot of pain. The kind of pain that makes you cry silent tears at the pain and injustice of your life. Chronic Lyme is especially difficult because it’s not recognized by doctors in Canada, I have been laughed out of many doctors’ offices already and I know there will be more down the road who will ignore and marginalize my suffering and pain. This is the reality of a life with Chronic Lyme Disease. It is not all bad though, there is some good that is Lyme Disease, because it will bring some of the strongest people with the biggest hearts into your life. You can ignore and belittle Lyme Disease, but I guarantee you no matter what, when you or someone you love gets bitten and sick, the Lyme community will be there for you. We will show you the ins and outs, the tricks of a herxheimer reaction and the doctors who will help and listen, we will not abandon you as many of you did to us. We understand that at the end of the day Lyme Disease is bigger than any one of us. I can tell you now that if one day one of the meanest doctors walked through the door asking for help because they had Lyme, we would all help. That’s what Lyme warriors do. They fight battles of their own every single day and yet still find the time and energy to help others who have it. These people are the backbone of communities. At the end of the day we will believe you and your stories, we see your suffering and hear your pain, we welcome you into our folds, yeah Lyme Disease sucks the big one, but the people who have it? The people who fight every day to see a tomorrow? They are some of the most beautiful souls that walk this earth. So the next time you think of Lyme Disease, think of them, the Lyme warriors who will have your back and maybe its time that you have theirs. It’s time that we all come together and show Lyme warriors that we support and believe them, the way that they would believe us. Alone we are one person up against a doctor who is refusing us treatment, but together we are a force to be reckoned with, and we are bringing on a reckoning to the medical community. It’s time for our voices to be heard, too many beautiful souls have been lost to this destructive disease, but no more.
