ONE-HIT WONDERS

If you would like Randy to DJ your next event, give him a call. There is still room on his dance card for a few more events this year!

Remember how that one song would get stuck in your head? It would just keep playing over and over again. You would hear it on the radio, never really knowing who it was by. Finally, the DJ would tell you and off you would go to buy the 45 to add it to your collection. The band would never be heard from again. You hear the song every so often and memories come flooding back of where you were and what you were up to when it was first released. Years later you come across the song again and download it, because well, your 45 is long gone. You listen again, and the song still sounds as fresh as ever, it has stood the test of time and become that classic one-hit wonder!

WHAT’S NEW

IN FISHING TACKLE & ACCESSORIES

FOR 2020?

ICAST 2019 just wrapped up in Florida. The word “ICAST” is an acronym for International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades. This is the world’s largest sportfishing trade show showcasing the latest innovations in fishing gear and related products, such as apparel and accessories. There are always some terrific products from all manufacturers. How would you like to be able to pinpoint the spot where you just hooked up and keep track of the fish caught on your trip all from your fishing rod? Well it is now a possibility. See the all new Abu Garcia Virtual connected rod powered by ANGLR. Download the App and then when on the water simply push the button on the end of the butt cap. Now you are able to track your fishing trips, record your fish catches, plan your next fishing trip, mark your waypoints and analyze your results all with the rod in your hand. Do not worry if there is no service in the area as ANGLR works anywhere. I have fished with Abu Garcia Veracity rods since their arrival on the market. This is a high performance fishing rod. For this coming year the Veracity now uses 3M Powerlux Technology. The rod still uses 40 Ton carbon fibres but adds Powerlux Resin in the manufacturing process. On average the rods in the lineup are 30% stronger but still lightweight, sensitive yet durable and strong. More and more anglers are now using kayaks for their on-water fishing trips. If you own a kayak, you are aware of how easy it can be to drop something over the side accidentally. In owning a kayak, even if not for fishing, you soon realize how important it is to be organized on board, and in some cases have certain accessories tethered to the vessel itself. As an angler in a lot of scenarios you want to grip the fish readily, and the best way is to use a product that will grab the mouth of the fish or the hook. It is much safer. This is one item that invariably gets knocked out of the kayak. Yakgear Inc. released Fish Grip Lock with Fish Grip. It offers an easy way to store and access the Fish Grip. Use the included track nut hardware to set the correct angle in the track of your kayak and slide the Grip into the lock for storage. This makes it easy to grab the Grip when you bring your fish to hand. Humminbird captured a Best of Show Award for their introduction of Mega Imaging in its Humminbird 360 Imaging Transducer. “Humminbird MEG 360 sonar technology allows full use of the trolling motor while using the transducer and it’s another best-in-class element of Humminbird and Minn Kota’s One-Boat Network, which provides the ultimate in connectivity for angler navigation, boat control and serving Lake erie Boaters sonar technologies,” said Joe Brown, senior director for over 60 years brand management, Johnson outdoors Marine Electronics. MEGA Imaging provides clearer, sharper underwater views, making fish more identifiable, and fish holding to structure easy to find. Check out these products and many more new products at your local tackle retailer. Hope you're enjoying our summer weather and being patient with our high waters. Enjoy the rest of your summer on the water! Larry can be reached at lmello1647@rogers.com

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

RUSH TO JUDGMENT “This is my charge to everyone. We have to love more and hate less. We have to listen more and talk less. We’ve got to know that this is every person’s responsibility.” - Megan Rapinoe (U.S. Women’s World Cup Soccer Co-Captain)

In March 2019, Dr. Frank Meza, a 70 year old retired physician, ran the LA Marathon in 2:53:10, a minute faster than the world age group record held by the late Ed Whitlock of Milton, ON. The result immediately sparked suspicions within the running community. Meza had been disqualified from the California International Marathon in both 2014 and 2016 for registering very irregular splits during the race and had been banned from entering the race again. After the LA result, information and photos were posted suggesting that Dr. Meza had left the course and re-entered further along. He was not seen in any of the official photographs taken along the course of runners finishing with times similar to his. A three month review was conducted. It involved the gathering and analysis of extensive video evidence revealing his leaving and re-entering the course at different places. It also highlighted that his recorded time for one 5 km segment between timing mats was faster than the current age record for that distance. Meza claimed that he only left the course looking for a restroom and then continued down the sidewalk. On June 28, officials disqualified him for violating race rules.

My reaction when told the story was straight-forward. I was glad the cheater had been caught and I didn’t understand why a 70 year old physician would cheat, even to boost his own ego, especially since he had been caught before and would undoubtedly be under suspicion again when the result was reported. I didn’t think any more about this sad little story until a week later. Dr. Meza was again the subject of a news report. On July 4, Frank told his wife that he was going for a run and that he would see her for lunch. His dead body was found the same morning by rescue workers. He had jumped from a bridge into the Los Angeles River. Earlier that day a photo of what seemed to be Meza riding his bike on the sidelines of the 2014 marathon, from which he was previously disqualified, had been published on a running investigations site. The company that operates the LA Marathon said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Frank Meza. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.” If he cheated, obviously he deserved to be disqualified. But did anyone want him to take his own life as a result? John Stuart Mill, in the epic essay “On Liberty” argued that “The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.” Personally, I don’t care if someone else cheats. That is his own decision. However, at a societal level, I do care. What if that means he becomes the winner, or the record-setter, or the podium finisher, rather than the rightful person? Then it does matter. As the allegations were revealed after the race, a running message board had been filled with accusatory and derogatory posts. There were over three thousand comments. In late June, Dr. Meza had told the Los Angeles Times that the messages were traumatic for him and that he was shocked. Many questions are raised. Was he bullied to death? Was it the business of all those hundreds of strangers who posted on line vitriol branding Meza a liar and a cheat? It seems to me that we often are too quick to rush to judgment and, even more so, that we have a

predilection toward assuming the negative. Our positions come quickly and confidently without thinking through many possible scenarios or explanations. I had immediately decided that he was simply and absolutely wrong in cheating. Now the more I think about it, the more complex it seems. Why cheat when you have been caught and disgraced previously for doing the same thing? Did he grasp rationally what he was doing to himself, to other runners and to the sport of running? Perhaps he had some sort of compulsion or health disorder that drove him to take an action that seems illogical. I wonder if anyone ever talked with him about it. Admittedly, the difficulty of doing so is compounded when the accused will not admit that he has done anything wrong. Dr. Meza adamantly denied that he had ever cheated, as did his family. It would seem that the online harassment contributed to his suicide. I can’t help wondering why people have to be so mean. The human trait evidenced in this particular situation plays out over and over in our daily lives, politically and socially. Unfortunately, the ability to easily comment on internet sites, and more pointedly, to comment anonymously, seems to have exacerbated the problem. I remember an expression from days gone by: if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. Should Frank Meza have been given more respect in deference to other more admirable aspects of his life? He was known for giving back to his community. Meza, the son of Mexican immigrants, mentored Latino students, was a long-time volunteer high school cross-country coach and worked to provide healthcare for low income patients. Dr. Frank Meza made a choice and we do not know why he did it. People who cheat should not get a free pass, but public shaming on social media is not the solution. We can be more empathetic. Meanness degrades primarily those who are mean. In my opinion, solid evidence was presented to the race organizers and disqualification ensued. That should have been the end of it. If we thought more about being our best selves, and less about the other guy, would it not be a better world?

Postscript: Immediately after writing this article, I went to the cemetery to walk my dog. I saw a man standing in front of a monument; he was crying. Let’s not wait too long before forgiving, before being our best selves.

farm & family.

by: dave scott

arm families in Norfolk and Haldimand possess an abundant measure of strength and resiliency. Some of these households have been providing food for our communities for over a hundred years. The versatility these families have shown has created a great diversity of agriculture within the counties. These folks seem to share the core principles of passion for working the land, an awareness of the changing winds of the economy, the strength to weather the elements, the fortitude to stand united when difficult decisions must be made, and most of all, the love for family. The Haskett family has been displaying all of these qualities for the past hundred years. Their family farm began as a general farm way back when, it transitioned to a Turkey Farm for a brief time. It is now one of the leading apple farms in the area and is noted for their Cider Keg apple cider lines, which are stocked on the shelves of many grocery stores around the province.

Check out all the sparkling cider flavours: apple, apple cranberry, apple raspberry, apple-strawberry-rhubarb, apple-peach, tart cherry, Christmas apple, and their Vineyard Trio. Grown, pressed, and packaged right on the family farm. In today's society, we tend to forget the importance of a working family farm. The keyword being family.

The Haskett family built their farm on hard work in the fields, dedication, and quality produce. They are responsible In 1966 Tom Haskett bought the farm from his aunt and farmers who understand the value of big family sit-down grandmother, and with support from his family followed his dinners, relaxing with easygoing conversations on the porch dream of farming. Tom continued to work at other jobs until with the neighbours, and helping out in their community. the farm was sustainable enough to provide for his family. There was no looking back at that point. With the growth The Hasketts are rich in family and the appreciation for what and a variety of crops, the Haskett family soon established their land provides. Norfolk County, in turn, is rich in the bountiful harvest that the Haskett family shares with our themselves as one of the premier Norfolk farm families. community. Now if you ask Tom what his favourite crop would be, he would reply, peaches. There is nothing Tom likes better than The Haskett family stands proud of picking a tender, fresh peach from the tree and enjoying it. the one hundred years of quality (Farm fresh peaches now available!!) they have given to our community With hundreds of acres of farmland growing a variety of from crops to caring, it is who they crops and the Cider Keg Farm Market and Country Store in are! full bloom this time of year, there is something for everyone!

SUMMER FASHION &

BloomingFlowers

It is always a beautiful day when you stop by Sassyfras Boutique located at Eising Greenhouses and Garden Centre and chat with Alice who is this month's model. Alice and I wandered about the greenhouses to take photos amongst colourful Hydrangea in full blossom and outstanding Purple Foxglove perennials that were showing off their rich colour! As for Alice, Dex is the name to remember in fashion this day with her burgundy v-neck top and comfortable black leggings for those cool summer and fall evenings - both by the way are from the Dex line. Alice is sporting stylish burgundy sandals by JJ Footwear that go nicely with the ensemble. You cannot help but notice the Tree of Life earrings and necklace from Bijoux Desert that emphasize grace and beauty. They are complemented nicely with the outstanding bracelet from Good Works. Of course, Alice makes it all look easy, pulling together this awesome late summer look. Watch for all the fall fashions arriving daily at Sassyfras. Alice, Kim, Joanne and Arlene are happy to help!

DANGERS OF

DEHYDRATION Consider These Tips to Reduce Your Risk BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

DRINK WATER – BUT NOT TOO MUCH! MINERALS AND ELECTROLYTES: SODIUM, POTASSIUM, CALCIUM, BICARBONATE, MAGNESIUM, CHLORIDE & PHOSPHATE Our bodies are truly a miracle - remarkable masters of balancing at the cellular level to protect our organ systems and functions from what sometimes seems our best effort to sabotage ourselves with the choices and situations we put ourselves into. Ordinary day to day challenges can generally be expected to maintain this balance with good digestion capabilities through a sensible, whole foods, nutrient-dense diet and appropriate water consumption, to keep things running smoothly. In good health, those consuming the appropriate macronutrients (Water, Protein, Healthy Fats and Carbohydrates) according to the Updated Canada’s Food Guide, should have little to be concerned about under normal conditions. Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in water. Dehydration due to excess heat (and heavy sweating), or illness is serious business! Vital for your nervous system and brain function, your muscles (the heart is a muscle too) and of course blood chemistry, acid base and balance (an optimal body environment) is just a brief overview of the importance in protecting and maintaining good health! **Severe depletion can be life threatening – especially in the very young, the elderly or those in poor health or on certain prescription medications and even some supplements. Other individuals at risk can be those working in the heat or involved in vigorous exercise, thereby sweating profusely, also those with frequent diarrhea. Symptoms may include: irregular heartbeat; weakness; bone disorders; twitching; changes in blood pressure; confusion; seizures; numbness; nervous system disorders, excessive tiredness; convulsions; muscle spasms; moodiness and irritability; nausea; vomiting; frequency or absence of urination, extreme muscle weakness; coma etc.

It may seem confusing, but drinking too much plain water can potentially aggravate the symptoms of dehydration! It’s all about balance – many people don’t drink enough water to start with – however, if someone is deficient in minerals and electrolytes for any reason, drinking too much water is going to potentially dilute the few remaining electrolytes and minerals ultimately compounding the health risk and symptomatology! There are many products on the market available commercially to help guard against dehydration – some are “better than nothing” and others are much more carefully engineered to be very health supportive and restorative. We have a quality selection of products at Dover Apothecary to suit your tastes and requirements while assisting you in protecting your health.

FOOD SOURCES TO FOCUS ON: Bananas, Oranges, Spinach, Kale, Broccoli, Tomatoes Coconut Water, Watermelon, Avocado, Strawberries, Olives Potatoes (with skin), Beans, Almonds, Raisins, Tofu Dairy Products (yogurt, milk, buttermilk), Turkey, Chicken, Veal, Fish *Himalayan or Celtic Sea Salt, *Raw cane sugar (*moderation)

FOODS TO REDUCE OR AVOID: Sorry to be a buzz kill, but that cold, refreshing alcoholic beverage can pack more than a punch after a day in the sun or sweating after working and playing outdoors. Make sure to balance things out with nutritious foods and an electrolyte replacement product in water! Moderation and Balance! Alcohol, Coffee, High Sugar/High Caffeine beverages, *High Protein Beverages (when already dehydrated) White Asparagus, Soy Sauce, Salty Popcorn/Snacks Barb Anstead NNCP I barb@healthywellandwise.ca

QUESTION: I DON’T WANT TO TRY CPAP. IS AN ORAL APPLIANCE OR NASAL STRIP EFFECTIVE? ANSWER: CPAP is the gold standard of treatment for Sleep Apnea, because it acts as a pneumatic stent, keeping the airway open, preventing collapse which leads to the cessation of breathing. Sleep Apnea is caused by the physiological collapse of your airway, a nasal strip is not capable to keeping your airway open, thus it will not effectively treat your Sleep Apnea. An oral appliance is rarely recommended for people suffering from Sleep Apnea. An oral appliance will keep your mouth closed and prevent your jaw from falling back. However, it cannot stop true airway collapse and Sleep Apnea. Often, if someone does NOT suffer from Sleep Apnea but does snore an oral appliance can be of assistance for the snoring. MORTON'S NEUROMA Morton's neuroma (MN) is a painful condition affecting the plantar aspect of the foot, just below the toes through the intermetatarsal spaces. A neuroma is a thickening of the nerve tissue and can occur anywhere on the body, with Mortons neuroma being the most common of the foot affecting the third and fourth metatarsal. Age and gender play a role in developing MN with females aged 45-50 being more susceptible to the condition, however, poor foot mechanics and support can contribute to the onset of this condition as well. Any movement or activity that places pressure on the balls of the feet can increase the likelihood of developing MN due to the compression and enlargement of the nerves through that area. Main risk factors commonly associated with the onset of this condition include wearing footwear with poor mechanics like high heels or shoes with a narrow toe box as well as the structure of the foot, with flat feet being of increased inclination. The most common symptom is the pain associated with walking, like there is a pebble stuck inside your shoe and can be followed by burning, tingling or numbness. Pain can start gradually at first then persist for days or weeks if the problem isn't addressed. MN can become a chronic condition if not treated in the early stages, however, many therapeutic interventions can be offered to cure the problem before it becomes debilitating. Initial treatment strategies for MN include rest from any footwear or activities that could be aggravating the metatarsal region and icing the area throughout the day. If pain persists, manual therapy techniques to break down tightness through soft tissue can relieve pressure and pain through the area while recovering. Great Lakes Physiotherapy treats many foot conditions including MN and is just a call away for appointments or any questions!
