imcoe woman leaves $10,000 insurance policy to Humane Society

The kittens and puppies at the Simcoe and District Humane Society don't know it, but they have a guardian angel looking out for them.

Charlotte Scruton, an avid supporter of the society who passed away last month, left behind a $10,000 gift to the local humane society in the form of an insurance policy.

"When Ron Kowalsky of Sun Life Financial) called to tell us, I was stunned," said Cathie Hosken, past president of the society. "This is an incredible gift and a wonderful legacy, Mrs. Scruton has left for us."

For the always cash strapped humane society, the $10,000 will be used to pay some bills and some will be set aside for the desperately needed building fund, Hosken added.

"Planned giving, primarily through charitable giving insurance polices, is becoming much more common," said Kowalsky, an investment and insurance advisor with Sun Life who has been discussing this concept with organizations for more than 14 years. "Mrs. Scruton was among the first people I dealt with to recognize how they work and what an incredible benefit it would be to the humane society, her favourite cause. There are significant benefits for both the donor and the charity

when using a life insurance policy to leave money to your favourite charity," he added.

"Primarily it allows the donor to leave much more then they could normally to their charity and, like any donation to a charity, it is a tax deduction, either by claiming the monthly premiums, or using the death benefit as a charitable donation to offset taxes payable by the estate."

Kowalsky said he feels planned giving is essential for charities to survive - they need money not just for day to day operations, but for future expenses. "I have long felt that with a dwindling volunteer force in so many charities, clubs and churches, not to mention the always decreasing grant money from various levels of government, many people, such as Mrs. Scruton, want to be sure the cause they supported, both financially and through volunteer work during their lifetimes, will continue. And this idea is a perfect way to do it. It is a win-win situation for the donor and the charity," he added.

"We have been actively promoting planned giving through life insurance policies for a few years," Hosken said, "but we had no idea Mrs. Scruton had named the society as a beneficiary in a policy.

nnaleise Update!

By Dave Scott I was off to Eising Greenhouses & Garden Centre last Saturday morning to check in on Annaleise Carr who was busy collecting donations for Camp Trillium… the staff at Eising Greenhouses were helping out by taking in donations at the till.

Annaleise has spent the winter swimming well over 12 hours a week… plus dry land training as well. During the last week, she has been fundraising at West Lynn Public School in Simcoe, attended an open house at her own school, was out at Eising Greenhouses & Garden Centre and then Saturday night, went over to the Bands Played On… which she had been invited to… busy young lady!

At 8am on Sunday we prepared for our first lake swim of the year in Port Dover… Annaleise was there as she began her open water preparation for her Lake Ontario crossing in mid-August.

Well, into the water we went… sure it was cold… but I do believe it was worth it for the fifteen of us who braved the May morning… there was this kind of excitement about getting back in the lake and starting to train… as for the newbies, welcome… it only gets warmer from here, and hey, you all did a great job for your first time out.

As for Annaleise this is the next wave of what will be a huge summer for this young lady.

John and Annaleise sat and discussed her crossing, which will take place this August… John reminded Annaleise to have fun this summer… can’t train all the time… sound advice!

By Dave Scott We stopped by M&M Meat Shops, Simcoe last Saturday afternoon to see how Joe and Stella were doing with their M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day benefiting Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC)… of course things were going well… and it was great to see such an awesome turn out.

This person brings all the others together and without this leader the others are just persons with abilities or talents. Seniors are the leaders of the health care team. It is because of them that everyone comes together as a team to help the seniors with the health concern.

All too often the senior expects the team to tell them what to do without the senior taking any part in the care or treatment. Seniors need to take a more active part and really help the “team” work together.

Being prepared for appointments is important; always have the health card ready and any other insurance cards, do not wait to be asked and then search for them. Have a list of medications and any allergies with the health cards. It is a good idea to keep all the health cards together with an elastic band. It also helps if one writes down why you made the appointment; this may sound silly but how many times have you forgotten to mention something that might have helpful to the health care person.

The scammer will use any method they can to accomplish this goal; they will use emotional pleas, false documents and outright lies. Here are a few of the common scams that are targeting seniors at this time.

Here are six words to use when preparing for the appointment who, how, what, when, where, and why. Here is an example of how to use some of these words. Why - back pain. How - is the pain relieved?

What - seems to cause it? Where - does it hurt the most? Writing down these points can help us be prepared for some of the questions we may be asked. Here is a list of some members of the health care

team who may ask these questions - office staff, nurse, doctor, x-ray technician, dietitian, physio or occupational therapist, pharmacist or lab technician.

And, here is something that is rarely mentioned! How often after making the appointment do you start to feel better and wonder if you should cancel?? Don’t!! Much thought goes into making that appointment, so do keep it!

Now it is quiz time. There are many words that sound the same and are spelled differently; here is a list of some of them: be gait peer see eve seem hare while right hire rain might here sun pair where mare do road wail Some can be spelled many ways. unfortunately very effective scam that is now in circulation. You receive a call in the middle of the night, you are informed by your ‘grandchild’ that he/she is in desperate trouble and needs X amount of money wired to them immediately.

The scammer is working on your emotional connection to a family member but counting on the fact that you cannot remember all your grandchildren’s names or their whereabouts.

Sweepstakes: "You have won!" Just send us $7.95 for postage and handling. While you're at it, wouldn't you like one of these neat gadgets?

They're only $19.95! Most of the "deals" are worthless. The scam is often in the postage and handling fees.

Charities: It is wonderful to donate money to the less fortunate. It's not wonderful to be less fortunate yourself and donate $100+/month to various charities. Older seniors are often on a fixed income. Many can't afford the right food or their medications as it is. They feel beholden to give when asked, even if it means they'll have to skip meals or not fill prescriptions.

Authority: It doesn't matter if it's a doctor, pastor or even a police officer. Our elders were taught to obey certain people, without question. They wouldn't be in that profession if they were likely to take advantage of someone. Unfortunately, these authority figures may still take advantage.

Even if it is legitimate, for example, the chapel needs a paintjob. The problem becomes when the senior commits funds that they do not have simply because the pastor is asking. Budget your charitable donations as you would any expense, only give what you can afford.

Nigerian Scam: This is an internet scam that is now being done with letters or even direct phone calls. The premise is that there is a huge amount of money in a bank account somewhere, and the caller needs you to send money so that this person can access the cash, then you will receive a generous monetary reward for your help. The thing to remember about this scam; there is no large bank account anywhere that needs YOU to magically access it!

If you are a care-giver reading this, the cardinal sign to look for is the removal of large or frequent withdrawals of money from the elder senior’s bank account. It's not snooping when you are trying to find out why an elder is overspending.

Caregivers have to stand up, find out what's happening and take action. Elderly seniors reading this, be aware and be alert. There is always a new scam on the horizon. If they are using emotional distress to con you, confirm all the facts before taking any action. If they are using fast easy money as the con remember that NO ONE is going to give you free money or lavish gifts, hang up the phone and don’t give it another thought.

Q: How does untreated Sleep Apnea Affect my Heart?

A: When you have Sleep Apnea, your airway collapses and you stop breathing. When this happens the oxygen in your blood decreases (and carbon dioxide increases). A drop in your blood oxygen levels and increase in carbon dioxide levels results in less oxygen being delivered to your heart . Over time, this continual decrease in oxygen and rise in carbon dioxide will cause irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmia’s),

Whoever said, ‘Romance is dead’, has never met Holy Trinity student, Drew Ferris… it seems Drew found a unique way of asking his girlfriend of ten months to the Prom.

The story began ten months ago, when co-workers at the Simcoe McDonald’s, Drew Ferris and Jenna Dreyer (grade 12 SCS student), began dating.

As Prom was rolling closer, Drew heard about the Promposal contest… and wanted to find a unique way to ask Jenna to the Prom… well, it all pointed back to the Golden Arches where the couple met… he wrote a letter to Patti (Manager) asking

Sleep Apnea is caused by the physiological collapse of your airway, a nasal strip is not capable to keeping your airway open, thus it will not effectively treat your sleep apnea.

An oral appliance is rarely recommended for people suffering from sleep apnea. An oral appliance will keep your mouth closed and prevent your jaw from falling back. However, it cannot

A: When you are congested, whether it is from a cold, allergies or something else, it is caused by lack of humidification in your nasal passage and upper airways. If you are experiencing this and having difficulty wearing your CPAP, adjusting the humidification on your CPAP will help. Increasing the humidification on your CPAP machine will help your body’s

natural humidification but providing the moisture that your body is lacking. Also, if your CPAP machine allows for this, try using a heated tubing system, if you are not doing so. This will allow for a better control and more accurate humidification.

Not all CPAP systems are designed to all for a heated tube but if your machine does, it would be a good item if you are experiencing congestion.

Few people can dispute that it has been an unusual spring this year and as I walk the trails around our property, I have been noticing an unusually large number of butterflies already flitting about.

This seems much earlier than I am used to seeing an abundance of butterflies and I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t remember ever seeing so many Red Admirals (Vanessa atalanta) at one time, so my curiosity was aroused.

When I talked to my almostneighbour and entomologist Bernie SolymĂĄr of Earth Tramper Consulting, he told me that the large numbers of butterflies we are seeing is the entomologistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s version of an â&#x20AC;&#x153;irruptionâ&#x20AC;? (a sudden increase in an animal population) from the southeastern United States. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve talked to lots of people who have noticed the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pretty little redand-black butterfliesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that are everywhere right now,â&#x20AC;? Bernie said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What many folks donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know is that the Red Admiral does not overwinter in Ontario. These fast-flying butterflies, members of the Nymphalidae family (also called brush-footed butterflies), are carried northward into the northeastern U.S., Ontario and QuĂŠbec by strong southerly winds.

Although the migration northward of this species occurs every spring, why there are such large numbers this year is anyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guess. Perhaps it is the result of a warm winter caused by a La NiĂąa effect. And this

species is not limited to eastern North America; the Red Admiral is a cosmopolitan species with the same phenomenon occurring with Red Admirals migrating from North Africa into Europe every year.â&#x20AC;?

While the annual Monarch migration is well known, many people do not know that Red Admirals also migrate. Researchers in Finland have found that the Red Admirals ride northerly winds on their southbound flight at altitudes of 2,000 metres or higher where the air temperature is only 2 or 3°C, travelling 3,000 km from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean in about five weeks. The Finnish study strongly suggests that the Red Admiral is also a seasonal migrant similar to the Monarch. I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find a similar study about Red Admirals in North America so I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if the local population is killed off by the frosts in autumn or if they leave the area to head to warmer climates. However, Antonia Guidotti, an entomology technician at the Royal Ontario Museum, recently wrote the following on the ROM blog: â&#x20AC;&#x153;A few Red Admirals have been reported to overwinter in Ontario but the majority of the ones born in August and later migrate south. Unlike Monarch butterflies, there is no single overwintering location known. Every spring, a new population of Red Admirals migrates from the U.S.â&#x20AC;?

With this many adult Red Admirals around so early, we may find numerous caterpillars in a few weeks. Resist the temptation to try to get rid of them! Although Red Admiral caterpillars arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the prettiest creatures (black with a touch of orange or yellow with spines on its back), their host plants are nettles. The adults lay the eggs on the nettle and when they hatch

The Red Admiral butterfly has been abundant this spring after being blown northward from the southern U.S. on strong winds in mid- to late-April. later in the spring, the caterpillars pull the nettle leaves around them for protection as they feed and grow.

In a few days, after the caterpillars are fully grown, they spin a mauveand-gold-coloured cocoon, or chrysalis, where they complete the magical transformation into what will be the adult butterfly.

An interesting fact about the Red Admiral is that there was an abundance of these butterflies in Russia in 1881, the year in which Tsar Alexander II was assassinated. Russians came to call this insect the "Butterfly of Doom," and some believe its great numbers "signaled" the beginning of the revolution and the death of the Tsar.

In addition to the Red Admirals, numerous other butterfly and moth species are â&#x20AC;&#x153;blown inâ&#x20AC;? from the south each year. Among these are Painted Ladies and Common Buckeye butterflies and Common Armyworm and Corn Earworm

moths, both of which are considered to be agricultural pests.

On the other hand, the Mourning Cloak, the first one of which I saw near Point Pelee this spring in early March, overwinters in Ontario under the bark of trees and in other sheltered areas. As soon as it gets warm in the spring, they become active and begin to flutter about the woods. Other species, such as the Clouded Sulphur and the Black

utdoor F itness Boot Camp

By Dave Scott Kerrie Adams from Port Dover Health & Fitness decided it was time to take her fitness classes outside… well, there are still her regular indoor classes… but she put together an eight week outdoor boot camp circuit around Port Dover (one hour sessions). The program, which runs Thursdays at 7pm and Saturdays at 8am is currently in its fifth week and has met with great success… so much so, that Kerrie believes they will continue to offer the program.

The program itself combines strength and cardio training and is a different workout every session. The classes take place in different locations… such as the Lynn Valley Trail, Powell Park, Port Dover Composite School, Silver Lake, the beach, track, and hill work around Dover… and well if the weather does not co-operate the group just heads indoors at the Port Dover Health & Fitness Centre.

NFN events The Norfolk Field Naturalists invite the public to their May 22 meeting (Simcoe Seniors Centre, 89 Pond Street at 7:30pm) to hear a presentation by award-winning wildlife ecologists John and Mary Theberge. “Stardust to Ecosystems: The Symphony of Life” is based on their book The Ptarmigan’s Dilemma, an Ecological Exploration into the Mysteries of Life. They weave a story about the roots of nature’s order – single cells to ecosystems - and the “fragile resilience” of life, illustrated with outstanding slides, and drawing on experiences with wood ducks and wolves, caribou and cranes, ptarmigan, penguins and petrels.

The NFN is also planning a field trip to Elgin County on Saturday, May 26th that is open to all. The tour will begin at Monarch Landing, just East of Pt. Burwell, with visits to Port Burwell Provincial Park, Otter River Farms and Julie VandenNest's Native Plants Nursery planned.
