Only Action Will Accomplish Our Goals By Len Dumas, PGA NCPGA President

I

t is an honor to be elected President of the Northern California Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America for the term 2012 - 2013. Since joining the Board of Directors in 2005, I have been fortunate to observe, learn and ultimately participate in the governing process that guides our Section. In 2012, we are presented with a tremendous opportunity as we are educated and exposed to the strategy that is Golf 2.0. The statistics are overwhelming; the golf population is shrinking, causing the closure of golf facilities both nationally and globally. This unfortunate situation has lead to tremendous unemployment of PGA Professionals, many of whom have left the industry.

The statistics are overwhelming, the golf population is shrinking...

The "what to do" has been made clear by the results of the Boston Consulting Group report which was commissioned by the PGA of America last year. The figures are staggering as to the number of players that have expressed an interest in playing golf, either as a new player or returning player. Specifically, there are three initially targeted groups: current players who must be kept in the game; lapsed players who have expressed a genuine interest in returning to the game, and new players. The target is to grow

the game from the current 26 million players to 40 million players by 2020. First we start by examining the game and removing barriers. It is necessary to create bunny slopes in the game of golf. It is necessary for a facility to be prepared for the first time player who approaches the counter and says, "I'm ready, let's play!". It is necessary to provide an experience that allows the player to control the time. What more qualified group to undertake this strategy than PGA Professionals? Our love of service and ability to develop relationships will catapult us forward as this program develops. We are fortunate to be supported by the PGA of America, as well as our Allied Associations. Golf 2.0 is an industry strategy, and our combined forces and resources will serve to ensure success. So let's get going! Time passes quickly and only action will accomplish the goals. Again, I would like to express my thanks for your trust and the opportunity to lead the NCPGA Section over the next two years. I look forward to continuing the work of our Past Presidents in growing the communication and involvement of Section members and apprentices. With secret weapon Executive Director Chris Thomas and staff members Jennifer, Nancy, Ida, Suzy, and Cameron, our road is made that much smoother. A great journey is upon us,

Len Dumas, PGA President

Golf 2.0 Works to Grow the Game

NOTHING ELSE COMES CLOSE ®

Chris Thomas NCPGA Executive Director/COO

D

id you know that in 2010, there were a total of 26.1 million people that played golf ? Unfortunately, that’s 1 million fewer golfers than the year before. The findings from surveys conducted by The Boston Consulting Group, which The PGA hired to help develop Golf 2.0, show that if left unchanged, the golf industry might face a decade of flat and/or reduced participation and revenues. With the start of 2012, the focus of our Association is on growing the game in a new way. We know that there are roughly 90 million Americans who are currently not playing golf but want to play, or are playing right now and want to play more.

UNMaTCHEd aCCUraCy WITH THE CONvENIENCE Of WIrELESS CONNECTIvITy.

Now, the most up-to-date and ONLY submeter precision course maps in the game are available instantly and easily with the new Wi-Fi enabled SkyCaddie® SGXW. The #1 rated rangefinder for accuracy combines unmatched reliability with the mobility and convenience of wireless connections to your Wi-Fi at home, compatible hotspots and many smartphones with qualified data plans.* Try the SGXW, risk free, and learn why SkyCaddie® is trusted by more golfers for critical distance information than all other GPS rangefinders combined. And better yet, SkyCaddie® eliminates aiming a laser and requires no line-of-sight because we have done all of the yard work for you. You’ll play better and save strokes, too, because ONLY SkyCaddie® walks EVERY course to make sure you have distances you can trust, just like a Tour Caddie does for his Pro.

The three core strategies of Golf 2.0, the PGA of America’s long-term strategic plan, are to retain and strengthen the golfing core, engage the lapsed golfer and drive new players to the game. In addition, 12 strategic initiatives have been designed to grow participation and increase revenues through a better understanding of the golf consumer and the targeting of specific consumer groups.

E-Z-GO’s PowerFilm Solar Panel Technology Boosts Performance Golf cars are getting a performance boost from the sun’s rays.

L

ooking to increase battery life and performance of its electric golf cars, E-Z-GO found an answer when it partnered with PowerFilm Inc. to design PowerFilm Solar Panel technology. The end result for golf car users is a simple, cost-effective path to “going green.” Users of the panel can reduce energy costs required to charge and maintain their E-Z-GO electric vehicles by as much as 20 percent annually -- depending on local weather conditions and other factors -- as compared to the cost of charging vehicles without the PowerFilm solution.

This innovative technology is available on the E-Z-GO RXV® and TXT® electric fleet golf cars, and Freedom® RXV and Freedom TXT electric personal golf cars. PowerFilm Inc. is an Iowa-based company and an industry leader in developing and manufacturing thin, flexible solar module technology. Through extensive collaboration with the U.S. military, PowerFilm has developed unique, field-ready solar solutions for military use and for other government agencies such as NASA. Its snap-top system, designed exclusively for E-Z-GO, allows for easy installation without requiring canopy replacement or structural reinforcement. Other benefits of the PowerFilm Solar Panel include: •

Increased net driving range. The PowerFilm Solar Panel constantly charges the car’s battery when the vehicle is exposed to sunlight, and decreases the depth of discharge during normal use. Less discharge means longer drive time for the car.

Easy installation. The panel features a snap-top installation system, exclusively designed for E-Z-GO vehicles. Adding the panel can be done without special tools or any changes to the car’s structure or aesthetics.

Energy efficient. The solar panel creates, on average, enough electricity per year to offset nearly 100 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, according to formulas devised by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Reduced energy costs. Because less power is required to

6

Northern California PGA - TEE.SHOTS Magazine

charge the electric car overnight, users will see a reduction in electricity costs to charge and maintain their electric vehicles. •

Lightweight and durable. Unlike many solar products that are heavy and fragile, PowerFilm’s Solar Panel weighs less than seven pounds and can be easily maintained by car owners. Designed and manufactured using no glass, the PowerFilm Solar Panel will stand up to the rigors of daily use.

Available in February 2012, visit www.ezgo.com or contact your local E-Z-GO representative for more information. Adrian Meyer PH (510) 301-7617 AMeyer01@Textron.com Spencer Hughes PH (916) 751-6291 shughes@textron.com

Teacher of the Year

Keith Lyford, PGA The Golf Academy at Old Greenwood Truckee, CA

R

anked among the Top 100 Teachers nationally and having earned Teacher of the Year honors in the Northeastern New York Section (2000) and New England Section (1997), PGA Director of Instruction Keith Lyford of The Golf Academy at Old Greenwood in Truckee, California, is now honored for his contributions to golf instruction for players and professionals at his facility, national level and within our Section. Since becoming the Director of Instruction, The Golf Academy at Old Greenwood’s lesson business has grown due to quality instruction, good customer service and creative programming. Keith has done extensive research and analysis to revise the Ball Flight Laws, realizing that there are actually 14 separate parameters. Keith is partnering with Titleist’s R&D department to finalize the Ball Flight Analysis Platform. He presented this topic at the PGA National Teaching and Coaching Summit in Orlando in January 2011. Keith has been a member of the PGA of America’s President’s Council on Growing the Game for several years and supports the Associations Growth of the Game initiatives. For the past six years, his approach has been to focus on teaching and mentoring junior golfers. He offers discounted rates and an array of programs, camps and clinics. Giving back to the community is important to Keith. He regularly donates lessons, clinics and golf schools to local and regional charity fundraisers. Throughout his career, he has written more than 30 articles that have appeared in major national publications including Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Senior Golfer, and Golf Tips Magazine. He published his facility’s instruction manual “Golf from A to Z,” authored 200 Master Strokes, produced four instructional videos, and designed and patented the Cast-Away-Power Trainer.

Club Fitter of the Year

Joe Wisocki, PGA Ridge Creek Dinuba Golf Club Dinuba, CA

P

GA General Manager Joe Wisocki of Ridge Creek Dinuba Golf Club is receiving this award for his expertise in fitting golfers with the proper equipment.

Joe has given more than 200 club fittings this year alone and has a simple philosophy, “Clubs should be tailored to refine speed, spine and angle.” He believes, “Today, all golfers who aspire to improve — juniors, seniors, men, women, skilled players, average players, pros — are being fit for their golf clubs. Because one size does not fit all for golf clubs any more than it does for shirts and pants.” With measurements relating to the golf swing obtained from the Fore Sight Sports GC2 launch monitor, V1 video system and a lie board, Joe discusses many different readings from club speed, ball speed, launch angle, angle of approach, club path, back spin rate and side spin rate with his customers. However, the three basic swing performance statistics which he focuses on are ball speed, launch angle and spin rate. Joe explains his technique, “I provide the golfer with clubs and balls based on ball speed that optimize their launch angle and spin rate to maximize distance and accuracy. During fittings I stress the importance of remaining realistic as the club fitting is the geometry part of the equation, while swing mechanics are the physics of the equation. It is a combination of the two that will allow a golfer to achieve his or her optimal performance based on individual ball speed and ball striking ability.”

Since then, he has focused on San Francisco contributing to seven local schools with their golf programs and by establishing strong relationships with the University of San Francisco to offer support for their rising golf program. At Presidio Golf Course for 12 years, Dan’s most successful program is his Junior Golfer Development program — a four hour lesson weekend mornings whereby students play on the course for nine holes and then go to the practice center or short game area to work on the aspects of the game that they need to improve. He also offers small playing lesson groups after school for children who are not quite at the competitive level of his player development groups. The intention is to invite this new wave of developing juniors into the more advanced weekend player groups as they develop. hether it’s creating women’s clinics to support women’s cancer or encouraging doctors and their patients to play to improve their health, PGA Head Golf Professional Ron Kuwata is exposing golf to many people through his use of innovative programming and Play Golf America initiatives. His passion for growing the game is evident. It’s always been Ron’s belief that an effective golf instructor can change a person’s life. When Ron reflects on his accomplishments over the last 30 years, teaching juniors is at the forefront. Several of his junior students have advanced to collegiate golf and still others have chosen careers in the industry. A regular volunteer at Saving Strokes Clinics, he believes that golf is a game for everyone, and good for one’s health, both mentally and physically. As a Vietnam Veteran, he believes that it’s important to bring veterans, who were former golfers, back to the game especially if life has dealt them a serious physical and/or mental challenge such as a stroke or combat injury. Ron is proud of the work that he has done targeted at women golfers, many of whom are just taking up the game. During the past two years more than 628 women of all ages and ethnicities have participated in Girls Club: Golf Fore a Cause clinics designed for women to learn to play golf, enjoy camaraderie, and contribute to women’s causes.

Merchandiser of the Year Private

Poppy Hills Golf Course Pebble Beach, CA

Tehama Golf Club Carmel, CA

Justin Williams, PGA

J

ustin Williams, former PGA Head Golf Professional at Poppy Hills Golf Course, says his retail philosophy is simple. “I keep my vendor list small, and offer a variety of price points within that vendor list. Doing business with fewer vendors means better service, more buying power, and a great shopping experience for the members and guests.” Justin encourages his assistants to get involved in the buying process as he believes that when they help order the merchandise, they are more active in selling that product because they were responsible for ordering it. Most importantly, Justin listens to his members and guests. “They are the consumers, so it is important to understand their buying habits and what they are interested in purchasing. Asking questions is a key ingredient in having a successful golf shop.” Justin spent approximately 25 percent of his time each day checking in, receiving, merchandising, and promoting the products in the golf shop. Approximately 45,000 18-hole rounds are played at Poppy Hills annually.

Merchandiser of the Year Resort

Pete Smith, PGA Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort Truckee, CA

P

GA Head Golf Professional Pete Smith’s merchandising philosophy is to stay on top of trends and new product offerings, keeping the shop fresh and affordable.

Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, offers everything resort guests may need for their golf outing, along with logo wear for gifts and vacation memorabilia. Pete and his staff try to balance their shop’s selections to cater to both the younger and hipper resort guests along with their more traditional, more conservative golfing guests. As a mid-level resort golf course amongst many high-end facilities in Truckee, Pete’s customers vary greatly in terms of socio-economic factors. They have some very affluent guests, some customers in the middle income zones, and some that stretch their budget to play at the facility. Pete spends 15 percent of his time daily in the pro shop. Approximately 17,000 rounds of golf are played each year and the course is typically open only from mid-May through mid-October due to the snow.

John’s territory spans Northern California and Northern Nevada. He has approximately 175 accounts and represents leading manufacturers including Antigua Sportswear, EP Pro, Weatherproof, RHI Course Signage, Weather Company Rainwear, and Scottish Winds Sweaters.
