A Message from the President The Northern California PGA Fou ndation was formed so PGA Golf Professionals throughout the Northern California Section could have a 501(c)3 tool to support youth golf programs, disabled golf and the underserved within each of their own communities. Its primary goal is to encourage PGA Professionals to host fundraising events at their facilities and to use those funds to support needy golf programs at their facilities or in their communities. As a service to its Professionals, the NCPGA Foundation allows NCPGA members who are hosting NCPGA Pro-Am charity events to run them through the Foundation in order to gain tax deduction benefits for those who attend and/or donate, the proceeds can benefit either local programs at their facility or within their community and the event itself benefits their facility’s revenues. PGA Professionals interested in hosting a fundraising event can find information at w w w.NCPGALinks.com under “Member Services.” Who better to lead the cause of supporting deserving golf programs than Jim Langley, retired PGA Head Golf Professional at the famous Cypress Point Club—the namesake of our NCPGA Foundation annual fundraiser The Langley, A Tribute to Legends.In its first three years, The Langley has won the support of golf’s biggest names and humanitarians. Arnold Palmer along with Jim Langley in 2008, Ken Venturi and Steve Menchinella, PGA in 2009, and Tom Watson and Sandy Tatum in 2010 were
all recognized for their achievements. Because of Jim’s support of this annual fundraiser the NCPGA Foundation, under Jim’s name, is providing college scholarships to needy graduating high school seniors, as well as to PGA apprentices working their way through the PGA of America PGM Program. Some of the net proceeds from The Langley have also been used to benefit Saving Strokes, a local program of the American Stroke Association which uses golf as a fitness and training tool during rehabilitation. In 2010 the Folds of Honor Foundation, an organization founded by PGA Professional and F-16 pilot Major Dan Rooney which provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation, will join the list of beneficiaries whom receive support from our NCPGA Foundation. Our good friend Jim Langley has not only been an inspiration to us all throughout his illustrious career, he now inspires us by taking the lead role in helping others through our new and very creative NCPGA Foundation. Northern California PGA Professionals Support Local Community through the NCPGA Foundation—Helping Deserving Individuals and Families PGA Professionals across the country are well-recognized for giving their time to their communities. What is less known is that they also donate millions of dollars. The PGA Professionals in northern California and northwestern Nevada, through the NCPGA Foundation, give back to our community through numerous programs.
This year, our featured beneficiaries include the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides post-secondary educational scholarships to the spouses and children of service members disabled or killed as a result of military service, Saving Strokes, a golf fitness and training program for stroke victors and The Langley Scholarship Fund which
supports and encourages continuing education by assisting students residing within the boundaries of the NCPGA Section with post secondary schooling. Thanks to the generous giving of our sponsors and participants, these organizations will receive funding from the proceeds of The Langley.
Folds of Honor Foundation (FHF) is a 501(c)3 charitable organization with a mission to empower deserving military families with educational support and opportunities. FHF provides post-secondary educational scholarships to the spouses and children of service members disabled or killed as a result of military service. Its unique scholarships can be applied to schooling now or held by FHF on behalf of young children until needed at the time of enrollment. FHF was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot, golf course owner, PGA Professional and USGA member. A Major in the Air National Guard and decorated military aviator, Rooney has served three combat tours in Iraq. Major Rooney’s hope in creating the foundation was that the families of the fallen would never have to endure alone.

Natasha Mounsey’s father was deployed on his third tour in Iraq. On the day of his death, he was flying a high-profile mission called “Operation Provide Comfort” (OPC) with the outgoing and incoming commanders of OPC, British, Turkish and French officers, diplomats, and Special Forces personnel to villages in northern Iraq. His helicopter was misidentified by an Air Force F-15 as Iraqi Hinds and was shot down by missiles in a “Friendly Fire” incident, killing all 26 people onboard both helicopters. Natasha plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design at California State University, Dominguez Hills. According to Natasha, “This scholarship will lesson the burden of tuition costs and other fees on my mother and me immensely. This scholarship will also allow me to attend an out-of-state college on my own and prove to myself that I am capable of being independent in the future.”

Major Edward Pulido, U.S. Army (Ret.), spent 19 years in the service and his family is a recipient of the FHF Scholarship, a gift that is an investment in the education of his children, Kaitlin and Kinsley. While serving in a combat tour in Iraq in 2004, he injured his left leg in a road side bomb and it was later amputated. “I want to thank my

Golf, along with many other types of physical activity, can be a driving force in the physical recovery of stroke victors, which is why the American Stroke Association, in partnership with local golf courses and the NCPGA, created Saving Strokes, a golf fitness and training program for stroke victors. Saving Strokes began in Sacramento in 2001 to offer stroke survivors an opportunity to participate in golf for pleasure as wel l as for physica lrehabilitation. This small program has grown to 9 sites in northern California, Nevada and Utah and has served over 1,000 participants to date. As Saving Strokes continues to evolve, it is clear that its active participants need additional programs. Each year the program sees approximately 40 percent growth in new participants, with more than half having no prior golf experience. This event envelops all ages, stages of rehabilitation and skill levels to produce an environment of learning, networking and support for all involved.
Neither Eugene, nor Ted, had ever played golf when the Saving Strokes flyer was distributed at their speech therapy group session. First, Ted talked Eugene into attending a stroke support group with him—where the Saving Strokes flyer surfaced yet again. That’s when the “I’ll go if you go” conversation began. And it was that prodding that brought them both to Saving Strokes in 2003. And it was the 2003 Saving Strokes event that kicked off a devotion to golf and the community on a whole new level. Fast forward to today. Eugene and Ted have their speech back. Eugene plays golf twice a week with various members of a close knit group of six stroke victors, all of whom met through the Saving Strokes program. Several times per week he heads out to either William Land Park or Haggin Oaks to assist with youth golf or a disabled golf program. Eugene is
enforcement for 30 years and retired in Davis, CA. It was in 2001, while out in his yard, that he felt as though someone had suddenly hammered a spike into his head. This “worst headache of my life” led him to go inside to lie down. Fifteen minutes later he was numb on his left side. His wife, luckily, called 911, which got him to the hospital within minutes. He suffered a second stroke the second week he was in the hospital, leaving him completely paralyzed on his left side. He would concentrate on moving each part of his body until he finally got it to move. Once he was discharged from the hospital he exercised at home and, at the encouragement of his wife, joined a stroke support group. When the Saving Strokes flyer was circulated, he passed it by. He hated golf. His wife, Susie, picked the flyer up. “Carl, I know you don’t like it, but let’s try.” He couldn’t hit the ball at all when

Eugene Smith has overcome a number of challenges in his life including a major stroke at the age of 70, not long after retiring after 10 years as a bus driver for the Sacramento Regional Transit Authority. When “the big one” hit him in 2003, hisbrain knew what he wanted to say but his speech center didn’t cooperate. He had aphasia. While he made progress physically, his aphasia remained. Upon his return home he began speech therapy—and that’s where he met Ted. Ted was also a stroke victor with aphasia in intense speech therapy in need of a friend.

a stroke victor, but now also a hero to his peers and to the many, many children and disabled of all ages he has mentored in the game he never even watched on TV before his truly lifechanging event. Carl Valdrow is also one of the golf group, and someone who hated the game of golf when a stroke changed his outlook on life. Carl was in law
he attended his first Saving Strokes event. But, soon after, his wife bought him a cheap set of clubs—the same set he uses today when he plays twice a week as a member of the group of six stroke victors that are now best friends. When not traveling with his wife, Carl mentors in the disabled and youth golf programs in Sacramento.

The Jim Langley Scholarship Fund supports and encourages continuing education by assisting students residing within the boundaries of the NCPGA Section with post secondary schooling. Graduating high school seniors are provided with a means to achieve their dreams and promote the fundamental values that this great game has to offer. Scholarships are awarded to one male and one female graduating high school senior. The Langley Scholarship Fund selects its recipients based on academic achievement, professional employment, community service, character and golf playing ability. This year’s winners are Taylor Camany of Salinas High School and Nicholas Schafer of Rocklin High School. “Their credentials are very impressive, their letters of recommendation are stellar, and overall Taylor and Nicholas are very well-rounded individuals,” said Jim Langley. “They are active in their communities, strong academically and are both accomplished players.”
Scholarship Recipient Taylor Camany of Salinas High School Camany is looking to apply her scholarship to Santa Clara University where she will major in Sports Psychology. “I plan to pursue a professional golf career while becoming a sports psychologist, focusing on the mental game of golf,” said Camany.
Scholarship Recipient Nicholas Shafer of Rocklin High School Schafer plans to use his scholarship to attend The College of William and Mary where he will pursue a degree in Business/ Economics. “My career goal after college, in conjunction with playing on the PGA TOUR, is to own a business or be a CEO/CFO of a business,” said Schafer.

Jim Langley A Quiet Humanitarian
“Don’t ever call me again!” That’s what Jim Langley told Steve Menchinella, PGA general manager of Sunnyside Country Club, three years ago. And these words came from one of the nicest and humblest men you could ever have the pleasure of meeting. So what happened for him to say that? As it turns out Menchinella was calling on behalf of the newly formed (at that time) NCPGA Foundation. He wanted to come down to Carmel to have lunch with Langley. Langley, who figured Menchinella was looking for some volunteer help for the Foundation, willingly agreed. Little did he know what Menchinella had in mind. The day of the lunch, Menchinella arrived with R.J. Harper, PGA Senior Vice President, Golf at Pebble Beach Company and Chris Thomas, executive director and COO of the NCPGA. Much to Langley’s surprise they did not merely ask for volunteer support, they asked if their flagship fundraiser and tournament could be named after Langley himself. Langley was honored although a bit perplexed, “But no one knows what a Langley is,” he said. With his typical generous spirit, Langley says, “I agreed, if they thought it would be of any help.” The next day is when he called Menchinella and jokingly spoke those words about never calling him again. “I returned the favor the following
year when I had the pleasure of calling Steve to inform him he had been selected as one of the event’s honorees,” said Langley. “The list of distinguished honorees we have had in the past three years is so impressive. I didn’t realize that it would reach this magnitude. Just being a part of it is a very humbling and enriching experience,” Langley adds. While today the tournament is known to many as simply “The Langley,” Langley himself can’t bring himself to call it that. Instead he calls it, “The Tournament.” Langley was PGA Head Golf Professional at Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif. from 1971 through 2005. Each year The Langley, A Tribute to Legends honors one PGA TOUR Professional and one local NCPGA Professional or Amateur who has significantly contributed to the game of golf. Langley and Menchinella are among those who have been honored at the annual event. They share this honor with Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Ken Venturi and Sandy Tatum. Langley says that, “Their name and fame along with those of our title sponsors has given the event a credibility that is far reaching now.” A Philosophy of Giving
Langley says he still does not know the criteria Menchinella, Harper and Thomas used when selecting him to be the namesake for the event. But most people recognize Langley’s decades of dedication to the game and giving back. It is that philosophy that represents the NCPGA Foundation’s charter. Langley has taught golf to juniors through the AT&T Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association and is a supporter of The First Tee of Monterey County. He has also volunteered with the local Boy’s and Girl’s Club. In earlier years, Langley served as president of the Booster Club for Carmel High School, helping raise necessary funds for local sports programs. “I would just make myself available
to promote the game and to be involved in our community. It is an ongoing endeavor —encouraging youngsters to participate and learn from the game,” said Langley. It is with this vision of inspiring and encouraging young people that Langley worked with the NCPGA Foundation to create The Langley Scholarship Fund. As a primary beneficiary of The Langley fundraising event, it awards two high school students and two PGA Apprentices each year with a scholarship. Langley’s relationship with golf is used to inspire people beyond the game to the values of life itself. He was struck by a car many years ago and plays the game with only one arm. As he puts it, “Life does go on with the help of others. Tatum attended Stanford University where he was a member of Stanford’s golf team, which won back-to-back NCAA Men’s Golf Championships in 1941 and 1942 and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1942, Tatum won the NCAA individual title. Following graduation from Stanford in 1942, Tatum served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. By chance a friend sug gested that he apply for a Rhodes Scholarship which Tatum was awarded. He then attended Oxford University and received his BCL in 1949 and later returned to Stanford where he earned a Juris Doctor and was admitted to the bar in California in 1950. Tatum served on the USGA Executive Committee from 1972-1980 and was President of the USGA from 1978-1980. In addition to serving the golf community, Tatum has generously given his energies towards improving his community at large serving as chairman, president and member of various councils, societies and associations. In the early 2000s, Tatum led a successful campaign for renovation of the Harding Park Golf Club in San Francisco. He was also involved in the design and development along side Tom Watson & Robert Trent Jones, II of The Links at Spanish Bay Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California.
From his roots in Kansas City, through college golf at Stanford University and more than 25 years on the PGA TOUR, Tom Watson has built a spot for himself among the greatest to play the game. Only five other golfers, Jack Nicklaus, Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Tiger Woods, have more victories in major championships. From 1977–1984, Watson dominated the PGA TOUR, winning Player of the Year Honors six times. He won the Masters in 1977 and 1981 and grabbed the U.S. Open Championship in 1982. He has won five British Open titles (1975-77-80-82-83) and was the TOUR’s leading money winner five times. Overall he has won a total of 39 tournaments on the PGA TOUR. Watson’s competitive excellence has not been confined to the United States. Along with five British Open Championships and three Senior British Open Championships, Watson has won tournaments in Asia, Europe, and Australia. He has been part of five Ryder Cup Teams, including serving as Captain of the victorious 1993 team.
