Aviation Humor? Lady, you want me to answer you if this old airplane is safe to fly? Just how in the world do you think it got to be this old? Both optimists and pessimists contribute to the society. The optimist invents the aeroplane, the pessimist the parachute. — George Bernard Shaw If helicopters are so safe, how come there are no vintage/classic helicopter fly-ins? Death is just nature's way of telling you to watch your airspeed. Leader, bandits at 2 o’clock! Roger; it’s only 1:30 now—what’ll I do ‘til then? Eagles may soar, but weasels never get sucked into jet air intakes. Service Ceiling: Altitude at which cabin crews can serve drinks. On reaching his plane seat a man is surprised to see a parrot strapped in next to him. He asks the stewardess for coffee whereupon the parrot squawks, “And get me a whiskey you cow.” The stewardess, flustered, brings back a whiskey for the parrot and forgets the coffee. When this omission is pointed out to her, the parrot drains its glass and bawls, “And get me another whiskey you bitch.” Quite upset, the girl comes back shaking with another whiskey but still no coffee. Unaccustomed to such slackness, the man tries the parrot's approach. “I've asked you twice for coffee. Go and get it now, or I'll give you a slap.” Next moment, both he and the parrot have been wrenched up and thrown out of the emergency exit by two burly stewards. Plunging downwards the parrot turns to him and says, “For someone who can't fly, you're a real cheeky bastard.” "Pilot to tower. I am 300 miles from land. 600 feet over water and running out of fuel. Please instruct! " "Tower to pilot. Tower to pilot. Repeat after me, 'Our Father, which art in heaven...'" An airliner was having engine trouble, and the pilot instructed the cabin crew to have the passengers take their seats and get prepared for an emergency landing. A few minutes later, the pilot asked the flight attendants if everyone was buckled in and ready. "All set back here, Captain," came the reply, "except the lawyers are still going around passing out business cards." More Humor Next Month???

We get e-mailed hundreds of jokes each month some with names, many with no names, we treat them as public knowledge as many have been heard time and time again, if they are decent we . . . the Editor print them.

LAKELAND, Fla., Sun ’n Fun, April 13, 2010 —

P

iper Aircraft President and CEO Kevin J. Gould handed over the keys to the very first PiperSport, light-sport aircraft to three veteran pilots here today. “The PiperSport is an amazing entry-level aircraft that will bring new customers to Piper,” Gould said. “It fits perfectly into our overall mission of delivering the very best airplanes. It will lead the way for customers to step up into more sophisticated and higher performance aircraft within our line over time.” The three co-owners -- all from Miami, Fla. -- are Charlie Carlon (ATP/CFI/CFII), 62, a 20,000+ hour, former Delta Airlines Pilot who works for Airbus North America teaching pilots how to fly the Airbus via simulation; Brian Garhammer (ATP/CFI/CFII), 52, a 16,000+ hour, former ATA pilot, who also works for Airbus North America teaching pilots how to fly the Airbus via simulation; and Dr. Mike Morduant, 62, a veterinarian and a pilot for 42 years. “The PiperSport is sexy!” said Garhammer, who joined with his two friends to accept the keys to Piper’s new LSA at a ceremony at Piper’s Sun ‘n Fun exhibit. “You can go out and buy a BMW or a PiperSport for about the same money. But who wants a sports car when you can fly the PiperSport?” Morduant echoed Garhammer: "I liked it from the get-go – its all-metal, conventional construction, its useful load, its range and the fact that when my son and I sat in it, we weren't crushing elbows. When I flew it, I really loved it. I was so happy to see that Piper agreed with me (on what was needed in the LSA segment).” The PiperSport, manufactured by Czech Sport Aircraft (CSA) and distributed through master distributor PiperSport Distribution, Inc., features a rate of climb of 1,200 feet per minute and is capable of reaching a maximum cruise speed of 138 miles per hour and an altitude of 10,000 feet. The aircraft has a gross weight of 1,320 pounds and 600 pounds of useful load. With the ability to run on automotive fuel, the PiperSport’s 30-gallon fuel capacity gives the aircraft a range of 600 nautical miles and the ability to refuel virtually anywhere in the world that offers either 100LL or premium, unleaded automotive fuel.

PiperSport, which sells for $119,900; the PiperSport LT (primarily a training model), which sells for $129,900; and the PiperSport LTD (professional model), which sells for $139,900. Each model features the latest in luxury – from leather seats to cutting-edge design – and is equipped with a 100-hp Rotax 912 engine and a BRS complete aircraft parachute recovery system. Each model also features the same gross weight, speed, fuel capacity, and range. Charlie Carlon, the third partner with Garhammer and Morduant, flew the PiperSport after its debut at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo at Sebring, FL earlier this year. “Both Brian and I are retired airline pilots and this aircraft gives us the chance to enjoy aviation in a different light than we’ve had over the last 25 years,” Carlon says. “I’ve had a passion for aviation since I was a boy, and this airplane speaks to that passion. It’s fun to fly!” About Piper Aircraft, Inc. Piper Aircraft Inc. is headquartered in Vero Beach, Fla. Piper’s rich legacy is born of 72 years of unparalleled history, with almost 150,000 aircraft brought to market and more than 160 models certified. Approximately 90,000 of those aircraft are still flying and being serviced and supported on every continent by Piper’s 65 service centers, 27 dealers and 2,500 field personnel. Piper is the only general aviation manufacturer to build and offer aircraft for every general aviation mission, from trainers and high-performance aircraft for personal and business use to turbine-powered business aircraft and the PiperJet. “We are committed to the future of piston powered flight, specifically by pursuing a socially responsible strategy,” said Diamond Aircraft CEO Christian Dries at AERO 2010 in Friedrichshafen, Germany. “Diamond's single and twin engine NG series aircraft are powered by the most modern piston aircraft engines in existence, operating on 100% lead-free fuel, and offering the very lowest exhaust emissions, lowest specific fuel consumption and lowest noise emissions. Not only are our airplanes the “greenest”, they also combine Diamond's industry-leading safety record with exciting performance and economy. I am very proud that my team has been able to achieve type certifications of the Austro Engine AE300, the DA42 NG and now the DA40 NG, all within the last 18 months. These programs have required extraordinary effort and financial commitment, an investment that ensures the viability of our product line, well into the future.” The DA40 NG offers all round improved performance and increased useful load over its predecessor, the DA40 TDI. It joins the previously certified DA42 NG twin to create the only jet-fuel powered piston fleet. DA40 NGs are already in production and initial deliveries will commence in the very near future. With well over 1500 delivered aircraft operating worldwide, the DA40 is the best selling composite light single engine piston aircraft of the last decade, popular with private pilots and commercial flight training organizations alike.

AIRCRAFT EXTERIOR 10/10 Aircraft is new.

10/10 Aircraft is new.

9/10 Paint is new. Airframe and paint are in excellent condition with no scratches or dents.

9/10 Interior is new. There are no scratches, cracks, crazing or other evidence of use.

8/10 Paint and airframe are in near new condition. Minor scratches (shallow, short and less than 1 or 2 per square foot) are detectable only on close inspection (inspecting aircraft while standing at less than an arms' length from it). Paint on often-used fasteners and screws may be chipped.

8/10 Interior is in near new condition. Any smell, dirt or matting can be removed by simple cleaning. Some evidence of use can be found only on close inspection.

7/10 Paint has high gloss. Small number (less than 3 or 4 per square foot) of scratches are apparent, mostly on leading edges due to abrasion. Close inspection reveals only a few small dents or chips (less than 1 or 2 per square foot). Windows are clear with no crazing or discoloring. 6/10 Paint is shiny. Several small scratches, chips or dents (4 to 6 per square foot) can be found, mostly around high use areas (fuel caps, doors, struts). Some crazing or small stress cracks (less than 2 or 3 hairline cracks per square foot) are visible in plastic and fiberglass structures. Several windows may be milky at edges. 5/10 Paint is sound (no corrosion apparent). Slight oxidation can easily be polished out, leaving paint shiny again. Two or three small areas (rounded corner of cowling, part of leading edge) of crazing can be found in paint. Paint on leading edges is rough from abrasion. Touched up or repaired areas may be seen on close inspection. Small number (3 or 4 per square foot) of short cracks can be found in fiberglass wingtips and cowlings due to normal wear or hangar rash. Cowling seals are faded. Many (less than half) windows have milky edges. Several windows may be crazed or lightly scratched. Aircraft looks attractive to most people during walk-around. 4/10 Paint is generally sound. Small areas require special attention (touch up or repair by trained individual) due to oxidation, peeling, chipping, corrosion or crazing. Paint is dull in many (less than half) areas. Most windows are crazed and scratched. 3/10 Paint is not shiny and has peeled in many areas. Most leading edges and upper surfaces are crazed and oxidized. Moderate number (5 or 6 per square foot) of chips, cracks or dents can be found. All window surfaces are scratched. Even after touch-up and polishing, aircraft still looks unsightly. 2/10 Aircraft looks terrible. Paint is badly oxidized, peeled and blemished. It is well beyond the touch-up and polish stage. Corrosion, dents and cracks require extensive work. 1/10 Exterior is so full of corrosion, heavy dents or tears that it will not pass an annual inspection without repairs.

Everything Aircraft

7/10 A small amount of wear is apparent. Small, shallow scratches and/or stains (1 or 2 per seat) can be found on seats, carpet or woodwork. Stain remover and shampoo removes almost all stains. Headliner is clean with no stains. There are no nicks in woodwork. 6/10 Headliner may have a couple of dirty spots that can be removed almost completely with cleaning. Matting in high use areas does not vacuum out completely. Steaming or shampooing improves interior considerably, but a couple of small, limited areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) remain looking worn or stained. No frayed or torn fabric is apparent. Leather, vinyl or woodwork has no cracks, but small scratches or creases (4 to 6 per seat) are obvious. Seats and drawers operate smoothly. Scratches in scuff plates around doorways are obvious. Interior still looks attractive when cleaned thoroughly. 5/10 High use areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) still look worn (fibers appear shorter than surrounding carpet) after thorough shampooing. Headliner may have several stains but is not torn. Minor (2 or 3 instances per seat) fraying, staining or cracking is apparent on less than half of the seats. Small nicks are visible in woodwork. About one-third of the seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior can be made to look clean, but it lacks sparkle in many areas. 4/10 Scratches, stains and frayed fabric are seen on most seats. More than half of the leather or vinyl seats may have small cracks. Carpet is matted along aisle. Carpet also has numerous stains, snags or other irregularities. Interior has two or three tears. About half of the seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Wood laminates may be peeling slightly. Several cracks in scuff plates around doorways are obvious. Interior cannot be made to look clean or smell fresh. 3/10 Tears, snags and stains are clearly visible in many areas. Several cigarette burns can be found. Most seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior looks and smells dirty even after cleaning. 2/10 Cracks, stains, tears and snags are the norm. Many seats have exposed foam. Interior is dirty and foul-smelling even after thorough cleaning. 1/10 Interior is so dirty and worn that most people would be hesitant about sitting down for fear of damaging clothing.

McCauley History

T

he McCauley story begins, appropriately enough, in the birthplace of aviation, Dayton, Ohio. It was 1938 when Earnest G. McCauley, a pioneer in the field of aerodynamics and holder of numerous patents on controllable propellers, founded the McCauley Aviation Corporation. In the still fledgling field of aviation, he determined that propeller and engine compatibility was crucial to achieving maximum efficiency and performance from an aircraft. McCauley built his company around this fundamental, yet significant and essential idea.

By 1946, the young company was already making dramatic advances that would forever change the face of flight. With the introduction of the first solid steel propeller, McCauley was building a reputation as an industry innovator. During World War II, McCauley produced 20,000 conventional, ground-adjustable solid steel propellers, an amount previously unheard of. McCauley's position as a leader in the field was secured. The company was purchased by Cessna Aircraft in 1960 and operated as a division of Cessna through the 1960's and early 1970's. During this time, the company pioneered a number of new products, including constant speed and full-feathering propellers (both two- and three-bladed). Cessna renamed the company in 1973, and McCauley Accessory Division came into being.

blade full-feathering and reversing turbo prop, followed by a four-blade model in 1983. McCauley began producing fiveblade turbo props in 1987, and followed that with a revolutionary and tremendously successful STC propeller line called "BLACKMAC." McCauley introduced a second generation, 1,650 s.hp., five-bladed propeller with scimitarshaped blades for regional airlines in 1992. In September 1996, the company was renamed McCauley Propeller Systems in order to better promote McCauley products and components. Through years characterized by dynamic innovation in propeller design and product line expansion (which included de-icing systems, spinners and governors), one thing has remained constant - our uncompromising standards of quality and performance excellence, in our propellers and propeller components, and in our service to our customers. McCauley continues to be a leader in both new OEM applications and STC conversions. Today, we are the world's largest full-line propeller manufacturer, with over 500 models available. Our propellers are FAA certified as original equipment for aircraft built by Raytheon, British Aerospace, Cessna, Fairchild, Grumman, Jetstream, Piper, Stoddard Hamilton and many others. Our products also serve a wide range of markets: military, agricultural and commuter airlines, as well as personal and business aviation. Currently, McCauley propellers are in the field on more than 250,000 aircraft around the world - a testimony to our continuing commitment to excellence.

In 1979, the company certified a threeEverything Aircraft

Flying Without Insurance? Think Again? It’s true that insurance rates have increased substantially over the past few years, especially for the commercial operator. In response some private aircraft owners are trying to cut costs, opting instead to fly their aircraft without coverage at all. As most know this is quite illegal. I know many aircraft owners who are resorting to dire measures to keep costs down – measures they wouldn’t even think of entertaining in their private lives. Driving an uninsured vehicle on the roads today is almost impossible, with police on the look-out for up-to-date license tags at ev ery opportunity. Aircraft operators, on the other hand, are flying under the radar, taking risks and playing hide-andseek with the law, putting their businesses at risk and flying without insurance. So, let’s take a moment and review the insurance requirements. CARS 606.02 stat es that no aircraft owner “shall operate an aircraft unless, in respect of every incident related to the operation of the aircraft, the owner has subscribed for liability insurance covering risks of public liability.” The smallest amount of liability insurance? $100,000. The statute concludes, “No owner or operator of an aircraft shall operate the aircraft unless there is carried on board the aircraft proof that liability insurance is subscribed for.” So insurance, and proof of insurance, is mandatory. If that seems costly, think again. Have you ever wondered what it will cost you if you are caught without coverage? With enforcement being stepped up, you might very well find yourself being asked to show proof of your aircraft documents. So what’s the penalty for a first offence going to cost you? For a first offence for a private aircraft owner, if it’s shown that you did not have the required liability insurance in force, the fine is $1000 for each and every flight. If you made 30 flights in the year without insurance, the fine would be $30,000! For the 1st offence! And what if you have your aircraft registered in a corporate name? The first offence for a commercial operator is $5000 for each and every flight. If you made 30 flights in the year without insurance registered in a corporate name, your 1st offence would be $150,000! Now, what if you try it again – and get caught? For the private aircraft owner with a second offence within 2 years of the 1st offence, the fine is $2500 for each flight! If you tried the 30 flights again, you’d be writing a cheque for $75,000. For the unlucky corporate aircraft owner, the fine is a whopping $12,500 for each flight. 30 uninsured flights for this fellow and he’d be writing a cheque for a mere $375,000. Now that’s a way to seriously impact your business..... My advice? Think a little more about the cost savings of flying without insurance. Whether you’re forced to pay $1,000, $2500, $5, 000, $12,500 – or some multiple of these amounts – you’re cutting costs only to incur much higher ones somewhere along the road. When you look at it that way, doesn’t your insurance premium seem cheap when you consider the consequences of not carrying coverage? C3R Stearman

W

hen one hears the name ‘Stearman’, the image that usually first comes to mind is the venerable PT-17 trainer biplane of World War Two. Well before military interest and use however, the sport flying and business circles had spun their influence in the development and birth of a civilian C3R Stearman “Business Speedster” or Sportster as some called it. Manufactured by the Stearman Aircraft Co. at Wichita, Kansas, the C3R, certified as a land and seaplane, was the most advanced of the three-place open cockpit C-3 series straight-wing biplane, that was to become one of the most desired sport airplanes of its day. Slightly larger than the C3B, the last of the “Squaretails” had several refinements, a more luxurious interior and was equipped either with a seven cylinder 225-hp Wright J-6-7 engine or a 240-hp Wright R-760E air-cooled radial that allowed for an increased cruising speed to 110 miles per hour. Accommodating two passengers, side by side up front and pilot in the rear, the clean tailored looking flyer, with custom landing lights, weighed empty at 1,650 lbs. and had a max takeoff weight of 2,650 lbs. A top speed of 126-mph and a range of 620 miles made for comfortable good weather air travel, be it business or pleasure. The big original classic C3 Stearman breed was also employed from time to time to as camera platforms for Hollywood movies largely because of their stability and ruggedness. A total of 38 C3Rs were built between 1929 and 1931, ten of which were acquired by Peru for its Air Force. There are today only four, perhaps five, known flight worthy examples of the C3R Stearman.

Lloyd Carlton Stearman was another of the early American aviation pioneers (Oct. 28, 1898-Apr. 3, 1975). Aviator, aircraft designer and WW I Navy flyer led Stearman to work with the likes of Matty Laird, Walter Beech and Clyde Cessna, before forming his own company in 1927. Stearman later joined up with United Aircraft & Transportation Corporation in 1929 of which Boeing Aircraft was a subsidiary. Lloyd Stearman resigned as President of Stearman Aircraft in 1930 to pursue other ventures. The pictured aircraft herewith is a 1930 example of the historic C3R Stearman. Restored to pristine condition the aircraft NC794H, (s/n 5036) once a crop duster, is now the treasured property of Bill and Claudia Allen of San Diego, CA. The photo was taken this past year at the Miramar Air Show, San Diego, CA. If you are looking for a photo or information on a particular warbird or vintage aircraft, contact: Ed Anderson at

BACE, GENEVA, May 4, 2010 -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that the Honeywell MCS-7120 Satellite Communications System has been type certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on the Dassault Falcon 7X business jet. The Honeywell MCS-7120 Satellite Communications System is an integrated communication system for both cabin and cockpit communications that provides fast, reliable, global connectivity via the Inmarsat SwiftBroadband or classic satellite network. “Honeywell’s satellite communications technology integrates seamlessly with the Primus Epic® based avionics to provide the security and capability today’s businesses need to stay productive while in the air,” said Brian Sill, vice president of Business & General Aviation Aftermarket, Honeywell Aerospace. “Operators can add their satellite communications to the Honeywell Avionics Protection Program on the aircraft, providing a simple, one-stop service for extended warranty coverage.”

The Inmarsat Swift Broadband service is capable of providing five times more bandwidth per channel than the current on demand circuit mode Swift-64 (64Kbps) service, up to 432Kbps per channel. Integral data compression can increase throughput by up to 100 percent, depending on the data. In addition, the Swift Broadband is an “always on” Internet Protocol (IP) connection, resulting in significantly higher service reliability, availability and overall user experience.

NewsApril 08/10 Diamond's DA42 NG receives FAA certification Diamond Aircraft announced today that it has received FAA certification for its DA42 NG airplane, powered by twin 170 hp Austro Engine AE-300 turbo-diesel powerplants. Particularly significant is that this certification also approves IFR and FIKI (known ice) operations. Of special interest to existing DA42 owners, the approval also includes conversion of TAE powered DA42s to the NG configuration, including optional installation of the Garmin GFC 700 autopilot. “We are following through on our commitment to existing and future US based customers by offering a new turbo-diesel propulsion solution for the DA42,” said Christian Dries, CEO of Diamond Aircraft Industries. “The DA42 NG is better in every respect than the original DA42 TDI, with much improved performance, increased gross weight, even better fuel efficiency, Garmin GFC 700 autopilot and Garmin Synthetic Vision Technology. With Diamond now offering FAA certified Lycoming and Austro Engine powered versions of the DA42, our customers have a wide range of options to match their requirements and preferences.” “Quite frankly, we couldn't predict if and when TAE would emerge from bankruptcy protection and therefore it was in our customer's best interests that we pursued TAE independent alternative solutions to support maximum value of previously delivered aircraft. Today, customers have the choice of staying with the TAE engines or converting to either Lycoming or Austro Engines.” “We are currently in the process of establishing the service and support infrastructure for the NG in North America and will shortly be announcing the details of an all-inclusive maintenance program that will ensure a superior level of support for DA42 NG owners.” With well over 500 delivered aircraft operating worldwide, the DA42 is the best selling light twin engine piston aircraft – popular with private pilots as well as flight training organizations. With its all-carbon airframe, known ice certification, Garmin G1000 integrated avionics deck and single lever jet-fuel powered turbo-diesel engines, the DA42 NG is the undisputed technology leader in general aviation. The DA42 NG, along with Diamond's complete piston line-up, and the latest design D-JET mockup will be on display at the Diamond exhibit at Sun 'N Fun, Lakeland, Florida, April 1318.

CONSOLIDATED VULTEE PBY (CATALINA) Story and Photo by Ed Anderson he workhorse of many eventual nicknames, "Cat", Pig Boat, P-Boat, Mad Cat, Black Cat (night variant), Y-Boat (Dutch Navy), Canso / Canso A, (Canada), the Consolidated Vultee PBY flying boat was, in 1939, becoming somewhat antiquated and ready for replacement according to USN word of the day. But, due to the large volume of orders placed by Britain, Canada, Australia, France and the Netherlands, threatened with the onset of war, and in desperate need of a reliable coastal patrol aircraft, production continued by Consolidated Vultee of San Diego California. These changing factors also caused the U.S. Navy to reconsider its position and place the largest single order for an aircraft since World War I.

T

Consequently, by the end of World War II the PBY had been produced in greater numbers than all other flying boats combined. Other than the three original American built PBY-3s sent to Russia in 1939, and a few hundred subsequently built by the Russians under license as the GST (powered by Mikulin M-62 radial engines) approximately 4,000 PBY flying boats including the amphibian versions were produced between 1936 and 1945, in the United States and some in Canada. Boeing Aircraft of Canada built the PB2B-1 and PB2B-2 as the "Canso", Canadian designation that also applied to the PBY-5A derivative built by Canadian Vickers. The first Vickers Canso flew April 3, 1943 and the first Boeing example a month later on May 12, 1943. By May 1945, Boeing produced 362 aircraft for export to Allied countries and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Vickers production totaled 379 PBYs for like export and home service. The Royal Air Force received PBYs in 1940 which were nicknamed "Catalina" and Coastal Command flew them under designations Catalina Mk I/II/III/IV. The name "Catalina" was later recognized by the United States Navy in 1941. The Royal Australian Air Force acquired their initial order of seven PBY-5s in June 1940 with more to follow in September of that year. By war’s end 168 Catalina’s had been taken on strength with the RAAF, amphibian and non-wheeled flying boat configurations. The PBY5A and PBY-6A variants were also used by the US Army Air Force service as OA-10A and OA-10B respectively. In 1933 the U.S. Navy put out a request for a prototype patrol-bomber flying boat with extended range and greater load capabilities to replace the aging Consolidated P2Y and the Martin P3M flying boats. Consolidated Vultee, in competition with the Douglas Aircraft Company, won the contract and produced a prototype, XP3Y-1, the first cantilever and strut braced parasol wing, central hull monoplane flying boat, with retractable stabilizing floats at the wing tips. The prototype initially went airborne 28 March 1935, and in October of that year set a peacetime distance record of some 3,400 miles, flying nonstop from the Panama Canal to San Francisco CA. In late 1936, the U.S. Navy introduced 60 flying boats into service under the designation PBY-1. Continued Pg. 24 . . . . Everything Aircraft

"Office and Hangar Space Available for Lease" Call Steve at 604-630-2212 Continued from Pg. 20 . . . . WARBIRDS Upon completion of the first test flights further orders followed for 50 PBY-2s and sixty-six PBY-3s. The PBY-4 came off the assembly line in 1938 and was the first of the PBY series to have the signature look of the well known "Cat" flying boat: the two high mounted protruding Twin Wasp radial piston engines with the unique large transparent gun/rescue blisters on either side of the hull aft of the big parasol wing. The PBY-5 appeared in 1940 and 1941 produced the 5A model with a retractable tricycle undercarriage to become the first amphibious variant. The PBY-6A was even more advanced including hydrodynamic improvements designed by the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia PA via the PBN-1 Nomad. The PBY Catalina was to become the most renowned flying boat of all time. All "Cats" still in military use in 1941 (some early models had been discarded due to age and accidents) saw extensive service throughout the war, in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres in a multitude of roles: long range reconnaissance, coastal patrol bomber, convoy protection, torpedo carrier, antisubmarine duties, night bomber ('Black Cat') and air/sea rescue (Dumbo missions). Despite a lack of speed, 195 mph, max. and cruise, 117 mph, no self-sealing fuel tanks, no crew armor, and high vulnerability to anti-aircraft attack, the PBY 5/5A/6A were especially rugged and versatile with tremendous range (2,545 miles). March 2003 Carrying a crew of nine personnel pilot, co-pilot, radioman, navigator, bombardier' and gunners - the lumbering Catalina powered by two 1200 h.p. Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines, each equipped with full-feathering propellers, (three blade Hamilton Standard) was to serve the Allies well as probing eyes in search of the enemy. The Catalina could also hunt and retaliate with its own armament of five machine guns and up to 4,000 pounds of bombs, depth charges or two torpedoes. A PBY in fact holds the distinction of being the first American aircraft to attack an enemy ship when it bombed a Japanese midget submarine during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Cat’s most famous single achievement, perhaps, was locating elements of the Imperial Japanese naval fleet at the Battle of Midway in the South Pacific. Also on May 26 1941, the crew of a British Royal Air Force Catalina found the German Battleship 'Bismarck' in the North Atlantic, reported its position, and the next day the behemoth warship was sunk by ships of the Royal Navy. Post war, the Catalina continued to be very useful in search and rescue service for many nations until the 1970's. In civilian colors the venerable PBYs found life as a geophysical survey platform, scheduled passenger carriers in Alaska and the Caribbean, but most of all as fire bombers in the United States and Canada. Today, worldwide, upwards of 30 of these high wings flying boats remain airworthy, mostly in the United States as restored Warbirds, and of the PBY5A model. The "Catalina" pictured in this issue is a PBY-5A, flown at the time in 1993 as "USN 48294", registered N9521C and based at Santa Rosa California. In civilian life the aircraft previously spent time in Arkansas and Alaska and in 1994 crossed the Atlantic for use in Switzerland and Italy. '48294' is, according to latest information, presently owned and flown by Training Service Inc. of Virginia Beach VA. ### Everything Aircraft
