WASHINGTON, DC, May 10, 2010 Today, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) reported that in the first quarter of 2010, worldwide general aviation airplane deliveries totaled 390 units, a 15 percent drop from the same period last year. However, this is an improvement over the dramatic decline experienced in first quarter 2009 deliveries as compared to first quarter 2008. Total industry billings grew 7.1 percent in the first three months of the year to $4.64 billion due to international deliveries of large cabin, long-range airplanes where customers rely less on third party financing than the remainder of the industry. First quarter billings in 2010 are still 12.6 percent below this same period in 2008. “These numbers are being released on the heels of Europe’s premier business aviation show, the European Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition, where many of our manufacturers noted that the market seems to be stabilizing,” said GAMA President and CEO Pete Bunce. “Reported flight activity from the FAA and EUROCONTROL is on an upward trend and the used aircraft inventory is slowly decreasing. However, these first quarter figures reveal that our industry is far from a recovery.”

GAMA says that the continuation of bonus depreciation will be crucial to allow our industry to increase production and bring back lost jobs. Bunce added, “We join with the rest of the manufacturing sector in calling upon the U.S. Congress to approve bonus depreciation for products ordered in 2010. Our industry appreciates the Administration’s strong support for this initiative.” The piston airplane segment was down 7.3 percent in the first quarter, with 166 units delivered as compared to 179 airplanes in the first three months of 2009. Although somewhat affected by adverse weather conditions, the overflow aviation crowd nonetheless had the up close enjoyment of the host Museum and visiting aircraft and crews. This Warbird Weekend was to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Bellingham Airport and the 66th Anniversary of ‘D-Day’, June 6, 1944 when Allied Forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to access “Fortress Europe”.

A fly-in rendezvous of this nature draws pilots and warbirds from all directions. And, for this occasion other notable vintage aircraft museums of the Pacific Northwest joined the celebrations, flying up several of their rare warbirds from home base Paine Field at Everett, WA. The Historic Flight Foundation www.historicflight.org delivered four aircraft: two ‘Grumman Cats’ - an F7F-3 Tigercat and an F8F-2 Bearcat, a P-51B Mustang and their latest acquisition, a B-25D Mitchell bomber called “Grumpy”. The Flying Heritage Collection www.flyingheritage.com provided their Republic P-47D Thunderbolt. Host museum <www.heritageflight.org> brought out their P-51D Mustang and the big A-1 Skyraider. Several individually owned warbirds were also on the ramp line and static display. All in all, regardless of overcast skies and showers it was an exceptional event, bringing out young and old alike, many military veterans, families, and countless aviation enthusiasts.

MAS GERMANY APPOINTED AS MOONEY AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER

pril 29, 2010, Kerrville, Texas— Mooney Airplane Company has added Maintenance Air Service GmbH (MAS) based at Flugplatz Leutkirch, Germany, to the authorized service center network. The addition of MAS to the network gives the many Mooney owners in Germany a second location for service. “Reliability and precision are two major factors in aircraft maintenance. Customers benefit from our long-established experience as we have been in business for more than 30 years,” says Daniel Schwarz, owner of Maintenance Air Service. “Our FBO is ideally situated in the Allgau Bavarian Region within the vicinity of Lake Geneva and the European Alps. 8/10 Paint and airframe are in near new condition. Minor scratches (shallow, short and less than 1 or 2 per square foot) are detectable only on close inspection (inspecting aircraft while standing at less than an arms' length from it). Paint on often-used fasteners and screws may be chipped.

8/10 Interior is in near new condition. Any smell, dirt or matting can be removed by simple cleaning. Some evidence of use can be found only on close inspection.

7/10 Paint has high gloss. Small number (less than 3 or 4 per square foot) of scratches are apparent, mostly on leading edges due to abrasion. Close inspection reveals only a few small dents or chips (less than 1 or 2 per square foot). Windows are clear with no crazing or discoloring. 6/10 Paint is shiny. Several small scratches, chips or dents (4 to 6 per square foot) can be found, mostly around high use areas (fuel caps, doors, struts). Some crazing or small stress cracks (less than 2 or 3 hairline cracks per square foot) are visible in plastic and fiberglass structures. Several windows may be milky at edges. 5/10 Paint is sound (no corrosion apparent). Slight oxidation can easily be polished out, leaving paint shiny again. Two or three small areas (rounded corner of cowling, part of leading edge) of crazing can be found in paint. Paint on leading edges is rough from abrasion. Touched up or repaired areas may be seen on close inspection. Small number (3 or 4 per square foot) of short cracks can be found in fiberglass wingtips and cowlings due to normal wear or hangar rash. Cowling seals are faded. Many (less than half) windows have milky edges. Several windows may be crazed or lightly scratched. Aircraft looks attractive to most people during walk-around. 4/10 Paint is generally sound. Small areas require special attention (touch up or repair by trained individual) due to oxidation, peeling, chipping, corrosion or crazing. Paint is dull in many (less than half) areas. Most windows are crazed and scratched. 3/10 Paint is not shiny and has peeled in many areas. Most leading edges and upper surfaces are crazed and oxidized. Moderate number (5 or 6 per square foot) of chips, cracks or dents can be found. All window surfaces are scratched. Even after touch-up and polishing, aircraft still looks unsightly. 2/10 Aircraft looks terrible. Paint is badly oxidized, peeled and blemished. It is well beyond the touch-up and polish stage. Corrosion, dents and cracks require extensive work. 1/10 Exterior is so full of corrosion, heavy dents or tears that it will not pass an annual inspection without repairs.

7/10 A small amount of wear is apparent. Small, shallow scratches and/or stains (1 or 2 per seat) can be found on seats, carpet or woodwork. Stain remover and shampoo removes almost all stains. Headliner is clean with no stains. There are no nicks in woodwork. 6/10 Headliner may have a couple of dirty spots that can be removed almost completely with cleaning. Matting in high use areas does not vacuum out completely. Steaming or shampooing improves interior considerably, but a couple of small, limited areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) remain looking worn or stained. No frayed or torn fabric is apparent. Leather, vinyl or woodwork has no cracks, but small scratches or creases (4 to 6 per seat) are obvious. Seats and drawers operate smoothly. Scratches in scuff plates around doorways are obvious. Interior still looks attractive when cleaned thoroughly. 5/10 High use areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) still look worn (fibers appear shorter than surrounding carpet) after thorough shampooing. Headliner may have several stains but is not torn. Minor (2 or 3 instances per seat) fraying, staining or cracking is apparent on less than half of the seats. Small nicks are visible in woodwork. About one-third of the seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior can be made to look clean, but it lacks sparkle in many areas. 4/10 Scratches, stains and frayed fabric are seen on most seats. More than half of the leather or vinyl seats may have small cracks. Carpet is matted along aisle. Carpet also has numerous stains, snags or other irregularities. Interior has two or three tears. About half of the seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Wood laminates may be peeling slightly. Several cracks in scuff plates around doorways are obvious. Interior cannot be made to look clean or smell fresh. 3/10 Tears, snags and stains are clearly visible in many areas. Several cigarette burns can be found. Most seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior looks and smells dirty even after cleaning. 2/10 Cracks, stains, tears and snags are the norm. Many seats have exposed foam. Interior is dirty and foul-smelling even after thorough cleaning. 1/10 Interior is so dirty and worn that most people would be hesitant about sitting down for fear of damaging clothing.

AKELAND, Fla., Sun ’n Fun, April 13, 2010 — Piper Aircraft President and CEO Kevin J. Gould handed over the keys to the very first PiperSport, light-sport aircraft to three veteran pilots here today. “The PiperSport is an amazing entry-level aircraft that will bring new customers to Piper,” Gould said. “It fits perfectly into our overall mission of delivering the very best airplanes. It will lead the way for customers to step up into more sophisticated and higher performance aircraft within our line over time.”

There are three variants of the aircraft: The PiperSport, which sells for $119,900; the PiperSport LT (primarily a training model), which sells for $129,900; and the PiperSport LTD (professional model), which sells for $139,900. Each model features the latest in luxury – from leather seats to cutting-edge design – and is equipped with a 100-hp Rotax 912 engine and a BRS complete aircraft parachute recovery system. Each model also features the same gross weight, speed, fuel capacity, and range. Charlie Carlon, the third partner with Garhammer and Morduant, flew the PiperSport after its debut at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo at Sebring, FL earlier this year. “Both Brian and I are retired airline pilots and this aircraft gives us the chance to enjoy aviation in a different light than we’ve had over the last 25 years,” Carlon says. “I’ve had a passion for aviation since I was a boy, and this airplane speaks to that passion. The three co-owners -- all from Miami, Fla. -- are Charlie Carlon (ATP/CFI/CFII), 62, a 20,000+ hour, former Delta Airlines Pilot who works for Airbus North America teaching pilots how to fly the Airbus via simulation; Brian Garhammer (ATP/CFI/CFII), 52, a 16,000+ hour, former ATA pilot, who also works for Airbus North America teaching pilots how to fly the Airbus via simulation; and Dr. Mike Morduant, 62, a veterinarian and a pilot for 42 years. “The PiperSport is sexy!” said Garhammer, who joined with his two friends to accept the keys to Piper’s new LSA at a ceremony at Piper’s Sun ‘n Fun exhibit. “You can go out and buy a BMW or a PiperSport for about the same money. But who wants a sports car when you can fly the PiperSport?” Morduant echoed Garhammer: "I liked it from the get-go – its all-metal, conventional construction, its useful load, its range and the fact that when my son and I sat in it, we weren't crushing elbows. It's Time to Spring Clean Your Insurance: Updating Your Coverages is Very Important As spring arrives and many of us get back to the skies in full force, we take it for granted that our aircraft need to be inspected and serviced. Well, your aviation insurance policy is no different. This is a good time to inspect and service your insurance coverage as well. Too many owners simply assume that what was good enough last year will be good enough this year too. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case, as many have found out the hard way. So join me in a quick springcleaning of your policy. First Some Good News…Then Some Bad News The good news so far this year is that—on the short term at least—premiums are staying very competitive. That means that it wouldn’t hurt for you to get a quote or two from different sources. You just might find yourself a better deal than you have been getting. The bad news—which you may discover if you take my advice from the previous paragraph—is that there are some companies pushing policies that look and sound good but are severely lacking when it comes to coverage. Very low prices usually go hand-in-hand with long lists of exclusions, restrictions, and limitations. Pay extra close attention to liability limits on passengers and family members; the minimum you should consider (unless you always fly alone) is $1 million with no sub-limits. As always, make sure you deal with someone you can trust and that you feel comfortable with. If they are trying to push a “one size fits all” policy or don’t seem to know much about aviation, you’d be better off dealing with someone else. Updating the Market Value of Your Aircraft Is Critical As most of you know, the prices of aircraft have skyrocketed in recent years. A few years ago, a mid-1970’s Cessna 172 in good condition could be found for $25-30,000. In today’s market, the same aircraft are listed at $50-75,000. This increase has a very important ramification for your insurance coverage. The amount for which you insure your aircraft has to be the fair market value. If it isn’t, you could be in for a nasty shock should you ever have an accident! As I’ve explained in this column before, the insurance company considers the amount of coverage to be the full value of the aircraft. So if you have a claim for that amount (or more), they pay you only that amount—and they take your airplane as salvage. Therefore, if you were only insured for $30,000 on that $60,000 Cessna, you would get a cheque for $30,000 and lose your plane! That’s why you should carefully consider the fair market value of your aircraft on an annual basis and update your insurance policy accordingly. Territories and Liability Limit As I mentioned above, liability limits are a very important consideration and an area where insurers try to cut corners. Harlow PJC-2

Historically speaking, in regards to the “Golden Age of Aviation” (1919-1939), it is absolutely amazing to me that in just 20 years civil aviation virtually sprang from infancy to adulthood. Free enterprise and aviation pioneers of varied backgrounds got it all ignited in consort with designers, engineers, flyers, ex-military pilots, financiers and the public’s excitement and insatiable curiosity of the new world of flying machines and speed. The ‘Roaring ‘20s’ opened an era of Flying Circuses, Barnstorming, Air Racing, trans-Atlantic and other record setting flights championed by the likes of America’s Colonel Roscoe Turner, James “Jimmy” Doolittle, Elinor Smith, Pancho Barnes, Wiley Post, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes. Countless others, including founders and builders named Curtiss, Laird, Stearman, Stinson, Cessna, Beech, Fairchild, Lockheed, all contributing much to the origins and progress of the civil aviation industry worldwide. Moreover, during this period of aviation excitement, there were numerous unheralded contributors, one of which was a chap by the name of Max Harlow, an aeronautical engineer and instructor at the Pasadena Junior College in southern California, from the late 1920s to the mid 1940s. In early 1937, Harlow laid out a class project to design a single engine, all-metal, (advanced stressed skin) low-wing cantilever four-place cabin, monoplane. The PJC-1 (Pasadena Junior College Prototype) first flew 14 September 1937. During certification however, the plane crashed. But, Harlow nonetheless was impressed with the given efforts. Accordingly, Harlow put into play the development of a second aircraft, the PJC-2 but with electrically operated retractable landing gear. Built in 1938 at Alhambra Airport by Harlow Aircraft Company, full production would not occur until 1940 due to development snags and extended flight-testing exercises. Financial problems and stiff competition in the face of a darkening situation in Europe only ten aircraft came off the assembly line before the close of production operations. The Civil Aeronautics Administration evidently acquired six, perhaps seven PJC-2s and the remainder went to private hands. According to the current owner of unit number seven, the PJC-2 is an “honest airplane” and very comfortable to fly. Powered by a 175-hp Warner SS165 Series, 7-cylinder radial piston engine fed by two Stromberg carburetors, model PJC-2 had a top speed of 150-mph, a cruise speed of 135, a 500 mile range and a service ceiling of 15,500 feet. Cessna Skycatcher Is Top Prize for Sporty's Annual Airplane Give-Away ICHITA, Kan., May 17, 2010 - On May 5, Sporty's Pilot Shop took delivery of its first Cessna 162 Skycatcher light sport aircraft. Ten days later, the Skycatcher was given away as part of Sporty's annual airplane sweepstakes.

The winner of the new Skycatcher was Alan Horowitch from Yuma, Ariz. The drawing came Saturday at Sporty's annual fly-in at its headquarters outside Cincinnati, Ohio. Sporty's, billed as the world's largest pilot shop, is an authorized Cessna aircraft dealer. "Sporty's annual airplane give-away does a lot to promote general aviation and the fun of flying – exactly why we designed the Skycatcher," said Roger Whyte, Cessna senior vice president, Sales and Marketing. Cessna is a Textron (NYSE: TXT) company. "The Skycatcher is going to be a catalyst for increased pilot starts. Curtiss P-40 Warhawk / Tomahawk / Kittyhawk The P-40 was the best-known Curtiss-Wright Corp. aircraft, considered by many as one of the most rugged fighter planes ever built. It was not however, held to be one of the "great combat fighters" of the war. Nonetheless, the P-40 'Hawks' were quite the capable ground support/attack platforms, and noted for being durable and effective in tropic and desert battle conditions. Somewhat of a mixed breed and controversial airplane, conceived of the company's radial engine P-36A and their experimental YP-37 fighters, to produce a lone prototype XP-40, equipped with a 1,090 hp Allison inline, V-1710 C, V-12 piston engine. Design work began in 1937, and after various refinements the first production example of the single seat P-40 (Model 81) appeared in May 1940. The aircraft then evolved to be included amongst the most widely used pursuit fighter planes of WWII, eventually being flown under the colors of many Allied nations, either by direct purchase or the Lend-Lease program. By most accounts, more than 13,000 P-40 hawks, in over a dozen versions, came off the assembly lines between 1939 and 1944. The P-40, particularly as a fighter-bomber, saw action on all fronts; in Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean, the Pacific and Russia. Not only was the P-40 the U.S. Army Air Forces' front-line fighter at the beginning of the second World War, but was also said to be its most important fighter during the wars' first two years. Pilots of the 46th & 47th Pursuit Squadrons (both units flying P-40s) were the first Americans to score victories of WWII, when they shot down ten Japanese aircraft in action over Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. By September 1940, 200 of the initial model had been delivered to the United States Army Air Corps. A further but lesser number of the P-40A, earmarked to fill export orders by the French, were redirected to Britain after the fall of France in late 1940, and called the Tomahawk I. These aircraft though, were used only for training purposes, primarily because of less than desired engine power, armor and insufficient armament. A second variant of the American named "Warhawk" was the P-40B, which the British dubbed the Tomahawk II. Arriving in strength with the Royal Air Force in early 1941, this model did have better armor, more armament (two nose-mounted & four wing-mounted machine guns) and self-sealing fuel tanks. Regardless, the "B" still lacked the high altitude fighter ability above 25,000 feet. In any event, this P-40 was the first of the 'Hawk' series to experience combat under the British flag, which employed them as fighter-bombers in the African campaign, with the Americans assigning theirs to the Pacific Theatre. The P40B and P-40C models were not produced in large numbers. The first P-40s sent to China became fighters for the American mercenary force (87 pilots and 300 or so ground support personnel). These 'Tomahawk' types were an export ordered block of 100 Curtiss Hawk 81A3s otherwise known as a P-40B, that were intended for Great Britain but were diverted by a waiver arrangement, due to pressing needs of the "Free Chinese" against advancing forces of the Japanese. It was out of this action however, that the P-40 gained its greatest notoriety. In the time between December 18, 1941 and July 4, 1942, the American Volunteer Group-Chinese Air Force (A.V.G.), that became better known as the "Flying Tigers" (Fei Hou), organized under the command of (General) Claire L. Chennault, made the Curtiss P-40 and the shark-jaw symbol world famous. Actually, the shark-tooth design painted on the nose or engine fuselage of the aircraft was adopted from the R.A.F.’s Desert Air Force Squadron 112 airplanes. In almost seven months of operations, the Flying Tigers flew the 'P-40B' along with some later added P-40Es in combat actions over East-China, Burma, Thailand and French Indo-China. The "Flying Tigers" shot down 296 Japanese aircraft with 300 more probables, against the losses of 69 A.V.G. planes in air action and on the ground, with 25 pilots killed by enemy actions. Given all the circumstances, including sticky-hot weather, exceptional results. The 'AVG', of which the famed Greg "Pappy" Boyington was a member, existed only until July 4, 1942, when it was disbanded, having but 30 well used P-40s left in airworthy condition, to become part of the 23rd Fighter Group known as the China Air Task Force of the United States Army Air Forces. ombardier announced today the acceptance of its offer to purchase the Saint-Laurent facilities of ExelTech Aerospace Inc. following the latter’s bankruptcy. The acquisition will increase Bombardier’s Global Completion Centre (GCC) capabilities for its Global 5000 and Global Express XRS business jets. The world-class GCC is a fully integrated completion facility with the capability to define, engineer, fabricate, certify and deliver customized interior installations. Bombardier’s GCC is known for its superior quality and workmanship, as well as for its customer-centric focus. Bombardier’s Global business jets are recognized throughout the industry as the ultimate in design and performance. “The acquisition of the ExelTech facility positions us to better serve our customers with the highest quality completions for our flagship Global business aircraft,” said Steve Ridolfi, President, Bombardier Business Aircraft.

Bombardier forecasts that the 115,000 sq.-ft. (10,684 sq.-m.) facility will be operational by the fall of 2010. The acquisition of this facility from RSM Richter Inc., in its capacity of receiver of ExelTech Aerospace Inc., is subject to closing conditions including obtaining the approval of the Superior Court of Quebec, as is customary for this type of transaction. Designated Kittyhawk I, it was armed with six 0.303 machine guns in the wings and provision for 1,000 pounds of bombs, boosted by added capability of a Rolls-Royce Merlin 28 engine. Albeit, due to the high demand for Merlin engines, not all the Kittyhawks were so fitted, relying rather on a more powerful Allison V-1710, which the U.S. Forces were using. The Kittyhawk II (P-40F) that also appeared in 1942 was likewise driven by a Merlin engine - the 1240 hp Packard V-1650-1, license made in America. 2320 P-40Es were built, which became the first of the Warhawks to see service with U.S.A.A.F. units in Europe and the Mediterranean theatre in a variety of combat roles. The P-40N, the most produced Warhawk variant (5,219) available in 1943/44, also used the 1360 hp Allison V-1710-81 inline piston engine, that could 'motor' the airplane along to a maximum speed of 378 mph at 10,000 feet. Later attempts to improve the rugged fighter's upper altitude abilities led to development of the P-40K, P-40L and P-40M models, what with a lighter fuselage and more dominant Allison engines did contribute to higher speeds and better agility. Nevertheless, these efforts were of little effect due, in large part, to increased competition and more successful fighter designs, leaving most of the final P-40s to be transferred to the air forces of Great Britain, Russia, South Africa, Australia, China and other Allies. Canadian-wise, four R.C.A.F. squadrons overseas nos. 400, 403, 414, & 430 - flew Tomahawks, but in non-combat roles of patrol, reconnaissance, and training duties while stationed in England. By 1943, however, the Tomahawk was outclassed and all squadrons had switched to either Spitfires or Mustangs. Kittyhawks entered service in late 1941 with home defense Royal Canadian Air Force Fighter Squadrons - Nos. 14, 111, 118, 132, 133 & 135. Two of the Squadrons, Nos. 14 & 111, were sent to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska to assist against the threat of invasion by the Japanese. Squadron Leader K. A. Boomer of No. 111 Squadron, destroyed a Mitsubishi "Rufe" float plane during a fighter sortie over Kiska, which turned out to be the only air combat and air victory for the RCAF in the North American Theatre of war. Later on the P-40 N version also became part of the Canadian inventory. The pictured aircraft is a Curtiss-Wright P-40N (Mk IV), 42-105867, b.o.c. to the Royal Canadian Air Force as 867, 17/9/43 and was s.o.c. 23/8/46. After several private owners N1226N, became a member of the Confederate Air Force, now Commemorative Air Force, and is owned by the American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum of Midland Texas, U.S.A. Over 70 P-40s, it is said, are known to exist, of which 20 are believed to be airworthy, and a similar number under rebuild, mostly in North America. ### Continued from Pg.11 The first thing to do is to make sure that you know exactly what your coverage is. Are there passenger limits? Family limits? Or any other restrictions on the way the policy will protect you? Are the limits reasonable? You may be surprised that the additional coverage is not as expensive as you thought— while lack of coverage can be very expensive indeed! The final stop on your spring-cleaning tour is a quick check on territorial limitations in your policy. Most policies restrict certain northern areas and some even prohibit operation into grass strips or unimproved runways. If your flying habits include any of these areas, you should make a point of amending your coverage. Now that wasn’t so painful, was it? No mops, brooms, dusters, tools, or vacuum cleaners required! Just a few minutes to review your policy and maybe a couple of phone calls to a friendly aviation insurance broker or two! Then it’s time to move into the cockpit and enjoy some spring flying. ###
