From the Editor . . . . Bob Landry Seasons Greetings to all our readers. This last year has come and gone and in many cases will not be missed by many. It’s been a long tough ride for many businesses in the aviation industry. We made it through this last year and 2010 looks interesting. With the Vancouver 2010 Olympics just around the corner, things will be pretty exciting or just chaotic when you consider our lack of expressways to move traffic in the lower mainland in BC. If you think traffic is heavy now, just wait until February 2010. We need more heliports, water taxies, local airports, and lessons from US cities civil engineers on how to build high volume traffic moving freeways and overpasses. Our Canadian pride is sometimes just too costly and archaic. Until next time, fly safe . . . B.L. This Issue’s Advertiser’s Index • Active Bailiff Service Ltd. Aviation Humor? Controller to aircraft that just landed: "Bear right, next intersection" Pilot: "Roger, we have him in sight" True conversation heard at Hanover Airport. The young woman in Tower has recently finished her training and is still not completely at ease. BA XXX is at holding position runway 09R. Another aircraft is doing approach procedures for a landing on the same runway. Tower wishes to expedite take-off for BA XXX: Tower: BA XXX, are you ready for a quickie ? BA XXX: Lady, I'm always ready for a quickie, but first I have to fly this plane to Helsinki ! (Heard on the radio - Really ) Cessna: "Jones tower, Cessna 12345, student pilot, I am out of fuel." Tower: "Roger Cessna 12345, reduce airspeed to best glide!! Do you have the airfield in sight?!?!!" Cessna: "Uh...tower, I am on the south ramp; I just want to know where the fuel truck is."

Tower: "xxxx, clear to land" XXXX: "roger" Tower: "xxxx, I can not see any landing gear. Is your gear down?" XXXX: "Say again, I can't hear you because there a some darn horn blaring in my ear!" Tower: "Your landing gear is NOT DOWN" XXXX: "Say what, I can't understand you" Tower: "Your landing gear is ..... aw shit." A decade ago or so I was in the back seat of a motor-glider being flown to a local airport for some repair work on a noisy muffler. Control: You're unreadable, say again. Us: I've turned off the engine, is that better? Control: L..o..n..g pause Pilot: "Approach, Acme Flt 202, with you at 12,000' and 40 DME." Approach: "Acme 202, cross 30 DME at and maintain 8000'." Pilot: "Approach, 202's unable that descent rate." Approach: "What's the matter 202? Don't you have speed brakes?" Pilot: "Yup. But they're for my mistakes. Not yours." GAMA Recognizes ADS-B Milestone On The Path Towards NextGen

560 Anne St. N. Barrie, Ontario, L4M 4S4 705-722-6209 or 705-722-3522 w w w . a i r c r a f t s a l e s . c a

ASHINGTON, DC, December 4, 2009 - In a move that puts in place a fundamental building block of NextGen, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has finalized the industry-wide technical standard orders (TSOs) for Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B). The ADS-B infrastructure is the backbone of NextGen and underpins government and industry efforts to reduce air traffic delays and realize environmental benefits. As a key investment for NextGen, ADS-B will migrate the existing radar surveillance infrastructure from the ground to a distributed aircraft and groundbased system. Previously, manufacturers did not have the standards necessary to design and build ADS-B equipment needed to meet the performance required for NextGen. These standards will now permit manufacturers to move forward with the production of ADS-B equipment. If the necessary financial incentives are also made available by the federal government, there will be a dramatic acceleration of NextGen benefits including improved safety and reduced costs for the FAA. "These standards are a significant success for NextGen, especially as we consider near-term opportunities to accelerate capacity, efficiency and safety benefits," said Rob Wilson, GAMA chairman and president of Honeywell Business and General Aviation. "The FAA has taken a considerable step forward by finalizing these TSOs and we look forward to continuing a strong government-industry partnership in order to maintain this momentum as we move toward equipage and implementation." GAMA's President and CEO Pete Bunce added, "As we shift from the planning to implementation stages of NextGen, it is even more critical that we move forward with reauthorization of the FAA and the discussion over the role of federal funding for onboard avionics equipage. We see a crucial role for the federal government in accelerating the deployment of NextGen through equipment funding. Equipment incentives are essential for achieving NextGen capacity, environmental and efficiency benefits at an earlier date." GAMA is an international trade association headquartered in Washington, DC representing 67 of the world's leading manufacturers of general aviation aircraft, engines, avionics and related equipment. GAMA's members also operate fleets of aircraft, fixed based operations, and pilot training and maintenance training facilities. For additional information, visit GAMA’s website at www.GAMA.aero. Indian Civil Aviation Issues Type Certificate for Dassault's Falcon 7X (Teterboro, New Jersey, November 20, 2009)

D

assault Falcon has received Type Certification for the Falcon 7X from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India. This event confirms that the Falcon 7X meets all the rigorous safety standards outlined by the country’s national airworthiness authorities and allows registration of the Falcon 7X in India.

The first Falcon 7X in India will be delivered in January 2010 to Religare Voyages Limited, a charter company based in New Delhi. This organization is also part of a multi-billion dollar group with a global focus in financial services, diagnostics, health & wellness, and IT services. Religare Voyages currently operates a Falcon 2000 as well as several smaller jets and turboprops. Their Falcon 7X will join over a dozen Falcon 2000 and 900 models currently operating in India with certificates. A dozen additional large cabin aircraft are currently on order for customers in India. The performance of the Falcons are especially valued here where short airfields, elevated runways, and high temperatures are common. To bolster support for the growing fleet, Dassault has established a spares center and customer service team in Mumbai, as well as a liaison office in Delhi. Two service centers approved by Indian DGCA are located in Mumbai. “India has become one of our strongest markets over the past several years, so the Falcon 7X type certification is of particular significance,” said John Rosanvallon, President and CEO of Dassault Falcon. “As the country’s economy continues to strengthen, there will be an increasing need to connect India efficiently with other major centers of trade around the world. For example, the Falcon 7X provides direct, non-stop access from Chennai, India to London City Airport located in the center of London.” Everything Aircraft

The Falcon 7X is the first and only business jet to incorporate a digital flight control system which provides greater operational safety and a smoother flight. The aircraft also comes standard with the award-winning EASy flight deck, designed to reduce pilot workload and improve pilot interaction through enhanced situational awareness in the cockpit. Announced at the Paris Air Show in 2001, the Falcon 7X was the first large cabin jet to be simultaneously certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on April 27, 2007. It is powered by three highly reliable and efficient Pratt & Whitney Canada PW307A engines which help to give the Falcon 7X greater airport performance and increased peace of mind during long flights over water. The Falcon 7X also has a 15-30 per cent fuel efficiency advantage over other aircraft in the large cabin, long range class. With a range of 5,950 nm (eight passengers, M.80 with NBAA IFR reserves), the aircraft can comfortably connect 95 per cent of the commonly used business aviation city pairs worldwide. Dassault Falcon is responsible for selling and supporting Falcon business jets throughout the world. It is part of Dassault Aviation, a leading aerospace company with a presence in over 70 countries across five continents. Dassault Aviation produces the Rafale fighter jet as well as the complete line of Falcon business jets. The company has assembly and production plants in both France and the United States and service facilities on multiple continents. It employs a total workforce of over 12,000. Since the rollout of the first Falcon 20 in 1963, 2000 Falcon jets have been delivered to 67 countries worldwide. The family of Falcon jets currently in production includes the tri-jets—the Falcon 900DX, 900LX, and the 7X—as well as the twin-engine Falcon 2000DX and 2000LX. ### U.S.: Ralph Aceti 201 541 4585 or Andrew Ponzoni (201) 541-4588 Dassault Falcon Teterboro Airport, Box 2000 · South Hackensack, NJ 07606 FRANCE: Vadim Feldzer 33 (0)1 47 11 44 13 or MarieAlexandrine Munoz 33 (0)1 47 11 64 23 Dassault Aviation 78 Quai Marcel Dassault · 92552 SaintCloud Cedex 300 - FRANCE Engineered with Passion Dassault Falcon Jet Corp. Three Ways to Save Money on Your Aviation Insurance Premium Let's face it. We'd all like to save money on our aviation insurance premiums. Yet every month, I use this column to tell you why you need more coverage rather than less...why you shouldn't buy aviation insurance based simply on price...why many policies leave you seriously unprotected. Well, this month-for a change-I'm going to tell you about three simple ways to save money on your aviation insurance policy. Money Saving Tip #1: Take Annual Training Probably the best all-round thing you can do is to take some form of regular training, preferably with an MOT approved flight instructor or other experienced pilot. Aviation insurance underwriters generally reward pilots who make a serious commitment to training. They often offer reduced rates and increases in coverage. One particular company rewards such pilots by providing aviation safety videos and special enhancements to the policy. Aside from any discounts or coverage enhancements, regular training allows you to become a better pilot and dramatically reduce your risks of an accident. A good instructor can provide an honest assessment of your abilities and help you work on your bad habits and weaknesses. Money Saving Tip #2: Match Your Aircraft to Your Experience One of the biggest challenges faced by aviation insurance underwriters is a pilot who tries to insure an aircraft which is clearly inappropriate to his level of experience. Just recently, I had to deal with such a situation. A relatively inexperienced pilot had just spent a large sum of money on a new aircraft. Although his pilot's license entitled him to fly this plane, no insurance company was willing to provide coverage. The end result was that he owned an airplane that he could not fly. If you plan on getting into float flying, multi-engine, retractable gear, turbine, or some other type of complex aircraft, you definitely need to start by doing some research. Call your aviation broker and ask some important questions. Find out if you'll be able to get insurance for the type of aircraft you're considering and find out how much it will cost. Even if you can find someone to insure you, you may find that the cost is prohibitive. Simply by choosing a different aircraft you could save yourself a lot of money on insurance premiums. Money Saving Tip #3: Deal With an Aviation Insurance Specialist There are two different ways that dealing with an aviation specialist can save you money. First, a broker who specializes in aviation insurance deals with the handful of aviation insurers on a daily basis and places a large volume of business with them. As a result, they are very familiar with the preferences and idiosyncrasies of each company. Because of their large volume of business, they're often in a better position to negotiate lower premiums or obtain coverage for you in borderline cases. Second, an aviation specialist can provide the advice you need to make an educated decision about your coverage. Although your local general insurance broker can do a wonderful job of taking care of your home, auto, and business policies, they often have little or no experience in handling aviation insurance. The liability and hull coverage in an aviation policy is a little different and if you deal with someone without enough experience in the field you could end up with the wrong policy for your needs and circumstances. Finding out after a claim that your policy doesn't cover you can be a whole lot more expensive than taking the trouble to get the right coverage in the first place. Ed’s Aerodrome

By: Ed Anderson

Ford Tri-Motor Henry Ford not only produced automobiles, starting with the famous Model T Ford, but had a keen interest in aviation as well. In 1925 the Ford Motor Company purchased the Stout Metal Plane Company thereby obtaining the rights to the Tri-Motor aircraft design. Production of the first ‘Tri-Motor’ model, the 4-AT, began June 11, 1926 at Dearborn, Michigan. The Ford Tri-Motor commonly referred to as the ‘Tri-Motor’ but nicknamed the “Tin Goose”, was the largest civil airplane in America when it began passenger service August 2, 1926, with Transcontinental Air Transport. Moreover, it was said that this aircraft made a leading contribution not only to aviation, but the pioneering of early airline and transport routes. The Model 5 Tri-Motored Ford was a larger version, which went into production July 21, 1928. Variants 6-AT through to 14-AT were all reconfigured from the 4-AT and 5-AT aircraft. Total TriMotor production numbered 199 units between 1926 and 1933 when output ceased due to the ‘Great Depression’. Over the years of operation the “Tin Goose” would serve many airlines, corporations, and militaries of the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and others. Given an ultra sturdy fixed landing gear, the all-metal (aluminum corrugated sheet metal with duralumin bulkheads) “Tin Goose” was powered by three engines, one mounted in the nose and the other two suspended beneath the wings. The larger and more numerous 5AT was equipped with three Pratt & Whitney Wasp 9-cylinder 450-hp air-cooled radials, whereas earlier variants had different combinations of lesser-powered engines. Depending on the version variant, ridership ranged between 8 and 14 passengers with a crew of three (1 flight attendant). The rugged ‘Big Bird’ had empty weight of 7,840 lbs and max lift-off of 13,500 pounds. Top speed was 150 mph, and would easily cruise at 90 mph within a range of 550 miles. According to current word there are 18 known surviving Tri-Motors of which six are airworthy. The pictured aircraft is an airworthy 1928 Ford 5-AT-B Tri-Motor, S/N 8, Tail # N9645 that is based at the Evergreen Aviation Museum, McMinnville, Oregon. The G1000 puts a wealth of data at the pilot’s fingertips with its glass flightdeck presenting flight instrumentation, navigation, communications, weather, terrain, traffic and engine data digitally on three large-format, high-resolution displays. The 15-inch MFD (multi-function display) is flanked by two 10.4-inch PFDs (primary flight displays). Behind the large, sunlight readable glass displays is a lightweight, modular design equipment rack that makes the system easy to install and maintain. Garmin’s Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT™) will also be offered as standard on all PA-46 aircraft when equipped with the G1000 option. SVT presents a 3D depiction of terrain, obstacles and traffic on the PFD so that the image replicates what pilots would see outside the cockpit on a clear day. SVT includes helpful features like a flight path marker (displays projected path of the aircraft), Pathways (Garmin’s implementation of highway-inthe-sky), and unique runway highlighting and airport signs.

Manufacturer’s Feature Aircraft - Cessna Corvalis TT

Everything Aircraft

This beauty is more than skin deep. Sure, the 350 Corvalis and 400 Corvalis TT are two of the best-looking aircraft in the world. But we would argue there's more to life than being really good looking. Take the 400 Corvalis TT, for instance: it's the fastest fixed-gear singleengine piston aircraft in the air today. And the 350 Corvalis is not far behind in terms of speed and performance. Both aircraft are primarily constructed of E-glass and carbon-fiber composite, materials that greatly enhances structural integrity, speed and performance. Our innovative design and manufacturing processes made the 350 Corvalis and 400 Corvalis TT eligible to be FAA-certified to stringent FAR, Part 23 Utility category standards. To pilots, this translates to confidence and peace of mind. Fast yet forgiving. The combination of the 350 Corvalis and 400 Corvalis TT’s integral leading-edge wing cuff and elevator features provide docile, predictable low-speed handling characteristics with full aileron authority – even at stall speed. And with the highest wing loading in their class, the 350 Corvalis and 400 Corvalis TT provide the most stable ride in turbulence. Make the other runway models jealous. Like so many supermodels throughout history, the 350 Corvalis and 400 Corvalis TT have “the look.” That extra-special something. Perhaps it’s the combination of contemporary design and smooth, aerodynamic lines. Or maybe it’s the modern paint styling and luxurious leather cabin. No matter your personal preference, you must admit: this plane’s got style. Play it safe. Every exterior surface of the aircraft (fuselage, wings and flight controls) is imbedded with lightning mesh to effectively and safely dissipate the adverse effects of a lightning strike. Additionally, static wicks on the trailing edge of the wings and elevator allow static build-up to be discharged safely without affecting avionics functionality or disrupting other electrical systems. 400 Corvalis TT • First year produced: - 2003. • Aircraft: 400 Corvalis TT • Model: 400 Corvalis TT • Seats: 4 • First year produced: 2004 • Total delivered in 2007: 119* • *Following the Cessna acquisition, one 400 Corvalis TT was delivered in 2007. • Total delivered by end of 2007: 380 • Engine: - Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) TSIO-550-C • Avionics: - Garmin G1000 WAAS • Propeller: - Three-Blade Constant Speed with Polished Spinner • Speed: - 235 knots, or approximately 270 miles per hour • Range: - 1148 nautical miles Great history: In 2007: • December 2007 the name was changed to the Cessna 400 • 2002 introduced as an all-electric aircraft • 2004 FAA type certification was granted In 2009: • January 2009 the name was changed to the 400 Corvalis TT • 2005 the Garmin G1000 was introduced For more information visit website: www.cessna.com Contact a Sales Representative U.S. - 1.800.4.CESSNA International - 1.316.517.6056 Everything Aircraft

Lycoming Retains Key Aerospace Certification Quality Systems Certification Extended Three Years

W

illiamsport, PA - Oct. 22, 2009 - Lycoming Engines, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, has retained its AS 9100 certification for another three years following a comprehensive multi-day recertification audit by NSF, the international registrar of aerospace standards. Endorsed by U.S. aerospace regulators including the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Department of Defense and NASA, the standard contains all the requirements of ISO 9001:2008 along with 80 additional requirements deemed critical to Aerospace Quality, as part of AS 9100:2004. "Because quality and reliability are vital, the aviation manufacturing industry demands robust quality management systems with a strong focus on continuous improvement," says Jay Mankad, Lycoming's director of quality. "Achieving AS 9100 recertification confirms our focus on delivering engines that meet the high standards our customers demand." The AS 9100 standard was developed in 1999 when the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG), comprising major aerospace contractors from the Americas, Asia, and Europe, fostered initiatives for quality improvement and cost reductions in the global aerospace industry. Lycoming first earned AS 9100 certification in 2007.

Michael Combs closing in on 50 state tour in REMOS GX

Thomas Aircraft Sales Inc.

Fri, 2009-10-23

D

enton, TX – Michael Combs came one important step closer to making the 50 State tour he plans to launch in just under six months: he earned his Sport Pilot’s license. Working with US Aviation in his REMOS GX, dubbed “Hope One”, Combs completed his check ride in just over 43 hours of training. Because of his intended 135-stop “Flight For The Human Spirit”, the first such tour by a Sport Pilot in a Light Sport Aircraft, Combs earned his endorsement for entering Class B airspace and took some extra long cross country flights. He hopes to have his total time up to 100 hours by the time he launches his tour on April 4, 2010. US Aviation, a REMOS dealer, specializes in training Sport and Professional pilots and has taken additional training steps to ensure that Michael can handle the task he has set for himself. The REMOS GX he will fly into all 50 States will be one of the most technologically advanced Light Sport Aircraft in the country. Combs will be using a satellite tracking system that will allow his mission control to update his location every two minutes that he is airborne. The information will be automatically advanced to his website where he will also be directing inflight commentary filmed through a computer video link. He will supplement that information with weather reports captured on a net book computer with updated charts and will maintain contact with his mission control via satellite phone. On board the aircraft he will have XM satellite weather access. The aircraft will have a Bluetooth link for internal communications and will automatically forward Twitters from the cockpit. Though his focus will always be on flying the aircraft, he will be assisted by an auto pilot tied into the GPS system. The electronic features he plans on using may be available as options to REMOS owners. Combs has calculated the trip will take 40 flight days. With anticipated weather delays, he expects to complete the trip in about 63 to 75 days. “’The Flight For The Human Spirit’ is proof of human capability and of accomplishing what you are able to dream,” said Combs. “I’d like to show the country that a Sport Pilot license is a passport to unlimited adventure and the REMOS GX is an ideal LSA aircraft for realizing that adventure. This is a celebration of freedom.” For more information on the first 50 State tour in an LSA, visit www.flightforthehumanspirit.com REMOS Aircraft is the world’s leading light aircraft manufacturer. Founded in 1994, REMOS is an international aerospace manufacturing company with operations in the Europe and North America. REMOS’ flagship product, the REMOS GX aircraft, is an all-composite, single engine, recreational aircraft certified by the FAA and the DAeC. Manufactured in a stateof-the-art facility in Pasewalk, Germany, REMOS aircraft are distributed and supported world-wide through a network of specialty sales, maintenance and flight training programs.

German workmanship from a brand-new factory

O

nly a one-hour drive from Berlin, the new REMOS manufacturing plant is located in the city of Pasewalk, near the Baltic coast. Advanced manufacturing technology, excellent working conditions and a highly motivated work force guarantee state-of-the-art manufacturing quality and the application of the most stringent test standards. You can be sure of superb efficiency and outstanding work results from our crew, in the tradition of a long line of superior German airplanes. The plant facility includes a paved 3,000 foot runway. Visit us in your "old" plane, and you're sure to leave with a new one. Modern Management The introduction of "Light Sport Aircraft" (LSA) in the United States, and the recent LSA certification of the GX have opened enormous opportunities for REMOS in world markets. Reinvigorated through a significant investment, REMOS is determined to take advantage of these favorable circumstances, utilizing the newly opened modern production facility in Pasewalk, Germany. At the same time, REMOS has significantly enhanced its senior management and its general work force. The production of the REMOS GX is to be taken up from presently almost 100 to 200 airplanes annually - a major undertaking for both, manufacturing and sales. The introduction of efficient, modern structures in process management and organization are providing the basis for a great future of the company. It began in an old Bavarian farmhouse. The success story of Remos started in the early 1990`s with experimental ultralight aircrafts. In 1997, the prototype of the REMOS GX series first took off, marking the launch of a new class of light aircraft construction. In the following time, 15 to 20 aircraft a year leave the final assembly place, an old farmyard north of Munich. Since the company grew up, it moved to a new built factory north of Berlin in 2006, where the REMOS GX is completely manufactured. Everything Aircraft

Bombardier Enhanced Vision System for Challenger 605 Jet Receives FAA Certification December 10, 2009 — Montréal Aerospace

B

ombardier Aerospace today announced that the Bombardier Enhanced Vision System (BEVS) and Head-up Display (HUD) for the Challenger 605 jet has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification.

BEVS provides pilots with significantly improved situational awareness and the ability to observe runway lights and the runway environment in difficult operating conditions, such as low visibility and or darkness. BEVS also enhances safety by helping to identify runway incursions. “This certification is great news for Challenger 605 aircraft operators in North America. Safety is a priority in our industry and the new BEVS will provide flight crews and passengers with a significantly increased level of safety in their operations,” said Michel Ouellette, vice-president and general manager, Challenger, Bombardier Business Aircraft. Operators selecting BEVS benefit from several advantages over other systems. The SureSight® CMA-2600i InfraRed camera provides superior sensitivity and advanced processing of real-time images in darkness or low-visibility conditions. The camera’s positioning on the upper portion of the aircraft nose places the BEVS directly in line with the pilot's visual reference point and makes cockpit views more natural. It provides images of the approach, runway lighting and of terrain scenery that are displayed on the pilot’s head up display (HUD) and on the co-pilot’s Multi Function Display, a head-down display that provides the same level of situational awareness for better communication during critical phases of flight. The BEVS HUD display features a wide field-of-view digital head-up display with a liquid crystal display image source. The system provides pilots with the same comprehensive flight-guidance symbology whether the EVS image is displayed or not, offering improved situational awareness, stable visual approaches, improved touchdown precision and greater safety through eyes-out-of-the-flight-deck operation. BEVS is being developed in cooperation with Rockwell Collins, the overall HUD and Enhanced Vision System integrator, and Esterline CMC Electronics, the supplier of the SureSight CMA-2600i Integrated Sensor System, a new development of the currently certified CMA-2600. The Challenger 605 jet features the widest stand-up cabin of any large category business jet available today. It is equipped with the Pro Line 21 avionics suite and an all new cabin electronic system. This jet can whisk five-passengers from Montreal - Moscow non-stop*, in superior comfort. The Bombardier Enhanced Vision System (BEVS) is offered as optional equipement on the Challenger 605 jet. By: Ed Anderson Warbirds Beechcraft AT-11 “Kansan” Born of the immortal twin-engined Beech D-18 low-wing, all metal monoplane, eight-seat commercial carrier, and its military transport version C-45, the distinctive glazed nose AT-11 was one of several unheralded variants that played a vital part in the American war effort of World War Two. As with a lot of wartime aircraft, the AT-11 also had humble beginnings. Originally designed to fill a contract order for the Chinese in early 1940 for six light bombers, the Twin Beech Model 18, with its retractable landing gear, was the selected platform. Modified to accommodate small bomb bay doors, internal racks for several 25 lb. bombs, a mid-fuselage top gun turret, and space for a machine gun opening in the lower rear fuselage, the export aircraft was designated M18R. The first of the Beech bombers were ready for delivery September 30, 1940. By this time though, the United States Army Air Force had also taken a keen interest in the D-18 of Walter Beech, which led to the production of the military version C-45 transport. A four-seat navigation trainer, the AT-7 “Navigator”, followed in early 1941. Military planners who closely examined the Chinese export M18R, and their AT-7 soon realized, from unfolding events of the day, the immediate need for an advanced bombardier and gunnery training aircraft. Consequently, an order was placed for a new variant of the C-45 to be known as the AT-11 “Kansas”, later renamed the “Kansan”. Powered by two 450-hp Pratt and Whitney R-985-AN-1 Wasp Junior radial piston engines, each turning a two-blade constant speed propeller, the diverse Twin-Beech AT-11 had a climb rate of 1,000 feet per minute to an operational ceiling of slightly over 20,000 feet. Maximum speed was 215 mph with a cruise speed 150 mph. Range for the “Kansan” was 850 miles. Its empty weight made 6,175 lbs and the maximum take-off weight topped out at 8,727 lbs. Wing area of the aircraft covered 349 square feet and the wing span measured 47 feet 8 inches. Height and length were 9 feet 8 inches and 34 feet 2 inches respectively. Specific to its design and purpose, the armed trainer had an internal bomb load capacity of 1,000 lbs (10-100 pounders), with small but fully operational bomb bay doors. A Norden bombsight, complete with a C-1 autopilot, was housed within a completely remodeled Plexiglas bombardier’s nose station. Gunnery-wise, early AT-11s featured a single .30-caliber machine gun in a motor driven glazed upper turret, whereas later AT-11s were equipped with an electrically operated clear 360 degree turret, but housing a pair of .30 caliber Browning machine guns. Also in the lower rear fuselage was a tunnel-like opening fitted for a flexible mounted .30 caliber machine gun. The interior of the aircraft was compartmentalized to closely resemble the B-17 Flying Fortress and the B-24 Liberator, so as to simulate the same environment as the full sized bombers. Whether in bombing, gunnery, or an optional navigation training mode, the crew were generally four in number - pilot, instructor and two students. On the other hand, if called to operational status or patrol duty the crew would comprise the Pilot, the Bombardier, the Gunner and the Navigator. An interesting but little known fact is that nearly 90 percent of over 45,000 USAAF bombardiers took their training in AT-11s. Initial deliveries of the AT-11 began in late 1941, and were immediately assigned to training units all around the United States. Over the course of the war 1,582 examples were taken on strength by the United States Army Air Force. A further 24 AT-11s, on order for Holland, which couldn’t make delivery before Germany invaded the Netherlands, were absorbed into the U.S. Army Air Corp. From this collective number of aircraft, 36 were modified to an AT-11A-BH configuration for use in advanced navigational instruction and aerial photography operations. The AT-11 also caught the attention of the United States Navy, who likewise were looking for an aircraft to augment the training of patrol bomber air crews. Satisfied of their findings, the Navy placed an order in early 1942 for 320 units of an SNB-1 “Kansan”. Deliveries to operational squadrons began in August 1942. After the hostilities of World War Two came to an end many AT-11s and SNB-1s were declared surplus, finding post war employment as crop sprayers, fire tankers, and aerial mapping platforms. The military, nonetheless, retained a goodly number of the aircraft for conversion to the C-45 group, added to the existing inventory of Transport Command and used well into the 1960‘s. Moreover, according to reliable sources, some 120 demilitarized “Kansans” were picked up by numerous countries in central and south America, including Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, Cuba, Dominican. Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Salvador, Uruguay, Venezuela, and overseas, Portugal and Turkey. The photo featured “Kansan”, s/n 42-37432 and tail #311Y, is owned and operated by Taigh Ramey of Los Altos, CA. The picture was taken at a ‘gathering of warbirds’ at Tracey, California a few years back. Story and Photo By: Ed Anderson

During a Sept. 23 test, an AIM-9X fired from a U.S. Air Force F-16C fighter sank a rapidly moving target boat in the Gulf of Mexico. "With a software upgrade, AIM-9X retains its airto-air capabilities and gains an air-to-surface capability," said Harry Schulte, Raytheon Missile Systems vice president of Air Warfare Systems. "AIM-9X now has the potential to take on an additional mission at a very affordable cost." The test marks the third time an AIM-9X engaged moving surface targets. In April 2008, a U.S. Air Force F-16 launched an AIM-9X and sank a maneuvering boat, and in March 2007, a U.S. Air Force F-15C fired an AIM-9X and destroyed a fast-moving armored personnel carrier. AIRCRAFT EXTERIOR 10/10 Aircraft is new.

10/10 Aircraft is new.

9/10 Paint is new. Airframe and paint are in excellent condition with no scratches or dents.

9/10 Interior is new. There are no scratches, cracks, crazing or other evidence of use.

8/10 Paint and airframe are in near new condition. Minor scratches (shallow, short and less than 1 or 2 per square foot) are detectable only on close inspection (inspecting aircraft while standing at less than an arms' length from it). Paint on often-used fasteners and screws may be chipped.

8/10 Interior is in near new condition. Any smell, dirt or matting can be removed by simple cleaning. Some evidence of use can be found only on close inspection.

7/10 Paint has high gloss. Small number (less than 3 or 4 per square foot) of scratches are apparent, mostly on leading edges due to abrasion. Close inspection reveals only a few small dents or chips (less than 1 or 2 per square foot). Windows are clear with no crazing or discoloring. 6/10 Paint is shiny. Several small scratches, chips or dents (4 to 6 per square foot) can be found, mostly around high use areas (fuel caps, doors, struts). Some crazing or small stress cracks (less than 2 or 3 hairline cracks per square foot) are visible in plastic and fiberglass structures. Several windows may be milky at edges. 5/10 Paint is sound (no corrosion apparent). Slight oxidation can easily be polished out, leaving paint shiny again. Two or three small areas (rounded corner of cowling, part of leading edge) of crazing can be found in paint. Paint on leading edges is rough from abrasion. Touched up or repaired areas may be seen on close inspection. Small number (3 or 4 per square foot) of short cracks can be found in fiberglass wingtips and cowlings due to normal wear or hangar rash. Cowling seals are faded. Many (less than half) windows have milky edges. Several windows may be crazed or lightly scratched. Aircraft looks attractive to most people during walk-around.

7/10 A small amount of wear is apparent. Small, shallow scratches and/or stains (1 or 2 per seat) can be found on seats, carpet or woodwork. Stain remover and shampoo removes almost all stains. Headliner is clean with no stains. There are no nicks in woodwork. 6/10 Headliner may have a couple of dirty spots that can be removed almost completely with cleaning. Matting in high use areas does not vacuum out completely. Steaming or shampooing improves interior considerably, but a couple of small, limited areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) remain looking worn or stained. No frayed or torn fabric is apparent. Leather, vinyl or woodwork has no cracks, but small scratches or creases (4 to 6 per seat) are obvious. Seats and drawers operate smoothly. Scratches in scuff plates around doorways are obvious. Interior still looks attractive when cleaned thoroughly. 5/10 High use areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) still look worn (fibers appear shorter than surrounding carpet) after thorough shampooing. Headliner may have several stains but is not torn. Minor (2 or 3 instances per seat) fraying, staining or cracking is apparent on less than half of the seats. Small nicks are visible in woodwork. About one-third of the seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior can be made to look clean, but it lacks sparkle in many areas.

Several cigarette burns can be found. Most seats are scratched. Even after touch-up and polishing, aircraft and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior looks and still looks unsightly. smells dirty even after cleaning. 2/10 Aircraft looks terrible. Paint is badly oxidized, peeled and blemished. It is well beyond the touch-up and polish stage. Corrosion, dents and cracks require extensive work.

2/10 Cracks, stains, tears and snags are the norm. Many seats have exposed foam. Interior is dirty and foul-smelling even after thorough cleaning.

LAKE RENEGADE SETS FOUR WORLD RECORDS RETRO NEWS ARTICLE

Lake Aircraft has sales, service and training facilities in Laconia, New Hampshire and Kissimmee, Florida (near Orlando).

Sanford, Maine, U.S.A., November 2, 1989 – Four world altitude records were set today by the 270 horsepower Turbocharged Lake Renegade. In the first flight, Robert Mann, Chief Pilot and Flight Test Engineer for Aerofab, Inc., the manufacturer of the Lake Amphibians, flew a Turbo Lake Renegade (Serial Number 1) to an altitude of 27,300 feet and thereby shattered a 37 year old maximum altitude record for light seaplanes (FAI Class C-2,b).

continued from Pg 10

After achieving this new maximum altitude world record, Mann leveled off at 27,100 feet to establish a new world record for maximum altitude in horizontal flight.

The Meridian, Mirage and Matrix currently feature Avidyne’s advanced glass avionics suite, the FlightMax Entegra Integrated Flight Deck, as standard equipment, as do Seneca V, the Saratoga II TC and Piper 6X. All other Piper models offer the Avidyne system as optional equipment.

In the second flight of the day, Robert Mann with Aerofab, Inc. President Gordon Collins as copilot, flew a new 270 horsepower Turbocharged Lake Renegade (Serial Number 100) to an altitude of 25,500 feet, smashing an 11-year-old record for maximum altitude previously held by a Cessna 180. The pair then leveled off at 25,500 feet and established a new world record for maximum altitude in horizontal flight in another seaplane category (FAI Class C-2,C). The records were set at Bauneg Beg Lake near Sanford, Maine and were validated by Peter Hatem, aviation attorney and delegated observer for the National Aeronautic Association. Textron Lycoming, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, manufacturer of the engine in the Turbocharged Renegade, provided technical and logistical support. Aerofab, Inc., President Gordon Collins, stated that Aerofab and Lake Aircraft were not only extremely proud to have established four additional world records for the Lake Renegade, but also pleased that this year the achievements were dedicated to Herbert P. Lindblad, the original founder of the company and designer of the aircraft. For over 40 years, Lindblad has been the guiding force behind the successful evolution of a product that now holds eight world records for speed and altitude. The current Lake Aircraft product line includes the SEAFURY, a six-place 250 horsepower model, and the Turbocharged SEAFURY, a 270 horsepower model. The product line also includes the SEAWOLF, a special mission amphibian designed to meet the various and complex requirements of government organizations. And for the new millennium, a special offer of the 250 Renegade is available. Everything Aircraft

Garmin ChartView™ is available as an option and it helps simplify operations, enhances situational awareness and increases safety during flight. With ChartView™, the aircraft’s position is overlaid on an electronic version of Jeppesen’s charts and airport diagrams.

“By adding Garmin’s G1000 to all of the PA-46 series of aircraft, we are providing our customers with a wider array of options than they have ever had on our flagship aircraft,” said Gould. “These technological innovations are another example of our commitment to providing our customers with the very best technology available – a commitment that stands as a cornerstone of the Piper experience.” About Piper Aircraft, Inc. Piper Aircraft, Inc. is headquartered in Vero Beach, Fla. Piper’s rich legacy is born of 72 years of unparalleled history, with almost 150,000 aircraft brought to market and more than 160 models certified. Approximately 90,000 of those aircraft are still flying and being serviced and supported on every continent by Piper’s 65 service centers, 40 dealers and 2,500 field personnel. Piper is the only general aviation manufacturer to build and offer aircraft for every general aviation mission, from trainers and high-performance aircraft for personal and business use, to turbine powered business aircraft and now the PiperJet.
