Azerbaijani Provocations In French National Assembly Aimed At Breaking Down Demonstration In Front Of Azerbaijani Embassy February 26th, 2013, in one of the halls of the National Assembly of France a conference titled “25 years after the Sumgait events: present situation and future prospects for the people of Nagorno-Karabakh” was held. The conference was marred by the Azerbaijani provocation. At the end, the attendees stood to honor the memory of the victims killed during Sumgait pogroms and kept a minute’s silence. Two Azerbaijani provocateurs, a girl and a young man, refused to stand up and to honor the Armenian victims in Azerbaijan and started to shout antiArmenian slogans. On the photos, published in “Nouvelles d’Armenie”, it is obvious how the Azerbaijani tries to provoke a fight and attacks the audience. Azeri press disseminated false information about beating and causing serious injuries, right up to fracturing, to provocateurs. In the photos, published in the same Azerbaijani media, it is clearly visible that there is no serious damage caused to both. Moreover, participants of the provocation give contradicting evidence about the incident: at first they say the girl was beaten together with the guy, then they say she managed to leave the room. Guard of the National Assembly took away the provocateurs. It is also noteworthy that a moment later the employees of the Azerbaijani

embassy in Paris, headed by the Ambassador were at the place of the incident which speaks of the pre-planned provocation. Meanwhile, the Hay Dat French Bureau says: “We are dealing with unacceptable provocation, which is aimed at disrupting the demonstration, planned for February 28 at the Embassy of Azerbaijan. We are intended to file a complaint against the instigators.” On 26-29 February 1988 in terms of actual complicity of local authorities and inaction of the USSR government mass pogroms of civilians were organized in Sumgait city of Azerbaijani SSR, accompanied with unprecedented brutal murders, violence and pillaging against the Armenian population of the city. Armenian pogroms in Sumgait were carefully organized.

At the meetings, which began on February 26 in the central square, city leaders openly called for violence against the Armenians. On February 27 protests which were attended by hundreds of rioters turned into violence. Armed with axes, knives, specially sharpened rebar, rocks and cans of gasoline and with the pre-compiled lists of apartments where Armenians lived the rioters broke into the houses, turning everything upside down there and killing the owners. In the same time, people were often taken out to the streets or to the courtyard for jeering at them publicly. After painful humiliations and torture the victims were doused with gasoline and burnt alive. On February 29 army troops entered Sumgait but without an order to intervene. Only in the evening, when the mad crowd began to attack the soldiers the military units took up decisive steps. The exact number of victims of Sumgait pogroms is still unknown. According to official data, 32 people were killed; however there is ample evidence that several hundred Armenians have been killed in the city in three days. There is also evidence that the riots were coordinated by KGB in Azerbaijan. Executioners of Sumgait were subsequently declared as national heroes of Azerbaijan.

There will be no problem or contradiction regarding the Association Agreement and the existing military-strategic and political relations between Armenia and Russia, expert Sergey Minasyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am. According to him, Armenia, as well as Moldova and Georgia, in fact have to choose between signing the EU Association Agreement or not. He believes that the dynamics of talks and comments from Brussels and Moscow shows that they both accept Armenia’s quite argumentative position.

“It is obvious that in case of the Association Agreement there are objective geographic problems but at the same time from the militarystrategic security view, Armenia more prefers cooperation with the CSTO and bilateral relations,” Minasyan emphasized. He also added that the EU agreement may give Armenia financial and economic resources, which is not fully ensured within the CSTO. “This policy refers to wider complementary policy, which Armenia has been realizing for twenty years,” he concluded.

Pallone Congratulates Artsakh People On Liberation Movement Anniversary Congressman Frank Pallone has issued a congratulatory message to Artsakh President Bako Sahakyan on the 25th anniversary of the National Liberation Movement. Dear Mr. President, I am writing to congratulate you, the people and government of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic, Artsakh on the 25th anniversary of the National Liberation Movement. During these several days 25 years ago your people raised their voice for freedom and dignity and in opposition to any government that rules by despotism. Artsakh’s path was challenged by various

ordeals and your nation refused to allow these obstacles to break your will and determination. The tragedy of Sumgayit and the violence that occurred in other Azerbaijani cities 25 years ago proved the virtue of Nagorno Karabakh’s choice to preserve its people’s unique identity by establishing a sovereign democracy. I offer my sincere congratulations and praise to the republic as you continue your efforts to strengthen your democratic system of governance. I also reaffirm my commitment to stand with the people of Artsakh in their struggle towards international recognition. I look forward to the day when Artsakh will take its deserved place in the community of nations.

German Ambassador To Armenia Urges Everyone To Get Back To Work Armenia is faced with difficult situation because some people believe that the elections could have a different outcome,” German Ambassador Reiner Morell told ARMENIA Today. “However, we believe that there is only one way - everything must go peacefully and quietly without use of force. And if there are issues, and they do exist, people or organizations have to take the peaceful path,” Ambassador said. German Ambassador believes one of the ways may be an appeal to the Central Electoral Commission, the step which have already been taken. Another way is to appeal to court. “But I think, in the end, if you think that something is wrong, then you have to prove it. If you cannot prove, have to accept the situation,” he said. It is the first time when people feel that have a certain power, influence, and have something to budge. People may be disappointed, because they did

Kazan for holding rally in connection with events taken place in 1992 in Aghdam Head of the Azerbaijani national-cultural autonomy in Tatarstan opposed the activities related to the events taken place in 1992, in Aghdam, which the Azerbaijani call “Khojalu”. Instead the Azerbaijanis Tatar nationalists sponsored from Baku participated in the protest. They, however, were condemned by the leader of Azerbaijani Diaspora. The agency “Tatar-Inform” reports that the night before, on the central pedestrian street Bauman, in Kazan, the activists of the Tatar Youth Union “Azatlyk” held a picket of solidarity and mourned with the people of Azerbaijan on the tragic events that took place 21 years ago. Leader of the Union of Tatar Youth “Azatlyk” Nail Nabiullin told the news agency that the main aim of the event was to express condolences and support to the people of Azerbaijan. According to him, about a dozen of activists of youth union are going to stand with posters. However Nail Nabiullin confessed also that this event is their own initiative and was not discussed with the Azerbaijani Diaspora of Republic of Tatarstan. In turn, the acting head of the Azerbaijani national-cultural autonomy of the Republic of Tatarstan Ahadzade Subhan Kamranogly was unpleasantly surprised by the event. He condemned these actions, and noted that he learnt about such an organization for the first time. “I heard about the organization for the first time and certainly did not know that such an event would be held. I am totally against it. No one consulted with us and all this is done incorrectly,” he stressed. He also noted that in Tatarstan and Russia different people live in peace and these friendly relations should be preserved. “The events of Khojalu are our tragedy, but there is no need to hold events dedicated to it. I am totally against it. Russia is a multiethnic country, and problems of Azerbaijan and Armenia still remain the problems of Armenians and Azerbaijanis. But this is Russia and it should not be allowed here,” he stressed.

EU Membership To Provide Armenia With Financial And Economic Resources - Expert

Note that in connection with the anniversary of the events that took place in Aghdam in 1992 Azerbaijan is trying to organize a variety of events throughout the world, however, even the Azerbaijani Diaspora organizations do not always support the campaign. Back in April 2012 Russian media and “Km. ru” in particular wrote that Azerbaijan finances subversive activities of pan-turkists in Tatarstan. The article mentions about the nationalseparatists from Tatar Youth Union “Azatlyk” which became famous by a series of scandalous anti-Russian actions. “According to experts, representatives of youth organizations from Azerbaijan, similar to Tatar Youth Union, are directly involved in financing of subversion activities of the latter,” the article said. On February 26, 1992, during the war in Karabakh, around 200 to 300 people (according to Human Right Watch, and 600 according to the version propagated by Azerbaijan) were killed in unknown circumstances near the city of Aghdam. They have been deliberately withheld by the Azerbaijani authorities in the midst of the military actions. Population of the village of Khojalu, which was one of the firing points shooting at the blockaded Stepanakert (among five others) was kept in the village for months by force and was not evacuated by the authorities of Azerbaijan deliberately, in order to use them as human shields later. Residents of Khojalu coming out through the humanitarian corridor, that the self-defense forces of NKR had left open, freely passed more than 10 km and reached the Aghdam city controlled by the Azerbaijani troops. Later, not far from the positions of Azerbaijani troops dead bodies of the villagers were found. The exact death toll remains unknown as the official Baku publishes data contradicting each other. Parliamentary Commission investigating the tragic death of the civilians at Aghdam city was dissolved by the order of Heydar Aliyev, the investigative materials are kept secret.

“Between hunger and fire. Power at the expense of lives” is a new, two-series English-language documentary that tells about the blockade of Stepanakert – capital of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic – in between November 1991 and February 1992. The film uncovers a story of bombardments, country-wide destructions and atrocity crimes against local Armenian population, as well as maneuvers of Karabakh SelfDefense forces to calm down the heavy-artillery fire from around the surrounding hills of the capital, foremost stationed in Khojaly town. The 90-minute, two-part documentary, released on YouTube, gathered around 210,000 viewers in around a week, and counting. The documentary was originally released in

Russian in February 2012, and attracted considerable attention and interest in Armenia and beyond. The “Moscow” cinema of Yerevan, various local universities hosted public screenings, discussions and lectures on the film. The documentary, part of larger endeavours, has been initiated by the Information and Public Relations Centre of the Administration of the President of Armenia. A heavyweight against the anti-Armenian propaganda and policy of racism, sponsored by Azerbaijani government and affiliated funds, the documentary is available in English either – for the wider international community to have a wider perspective on the Khojaly events and the Karabakh liberation war at all.

Armenian Parliamentary Factions Working Out Joint Statement On Post-Election Situation Heritage, ARF Dashnaktsutyun and RPA parliamentary factions are working out a joint statement in order to discuss the post-election situation in the parliament. If an agreement is reached, an extraordinary session will be called in the National Assembly, parliament speaker Hovik Abrahamyan told a news conference today. “I proposed organizing a parliamentary dis-

cussion on post-election processes and my colleagues from Heritage and ARFD agreed. Currently we are working out a joint statement – how we imagine the discussion. We are thinking of holding an extraordinary session and adopting a statement. It will be better if we have a common position, but if not, the processes will go on,” the parliament speaker said.

Nra Declares Government Will Seize Guns The National Rifle Association claims it has obtained a Justice Apartment memo that notes President Obama’s gun control initiatives would be ineffective without seizing citizens’ assault rifles and requiring a federal gun registration. It’s not clear how the NRA obtained a memo under the name of one of the Justice Department’s leading crime researchers, but its authenticity has not neither been challenged by the White House nor Justice Department. The NRA is using the memo in advertisements, zeroing in on the statement claiming that the success of universal background checks would depend on “requiring gun registration” and that gun buybacks would not work “unless massive and coupled with a ban.”

The memo also says that requiring background checks for gun purchases would not be enough to address gun violence and that it could lead to more unlawful weapons sales among those not able to pass or not willing to subject themselves to a background check.

Iranian Armenians Protest Turkey’s Interference In Syria Hundreds of Iranian Armenians held a protest this morning outside the Turkish Embassy in Tehran demanding that Ankara stop interfering in the Syrian conflict, Iranian news agency IRIB reported. The protesters made a statement, which said, in part, “Peace is the elementary right of the Syrian people. The national and religious minorities living in Syria, including the Christians, particularly the Armenians, are in a difficult situation, along with the innocent citizens of that country. A great number of Armenians have died, have been injured and have become homeless as a result of the Syrian conflict.” “As citizens of Iran and representatives of the Armenian community of Iran, in view of the self-determination right of the Syrian people without foreign interference, particularly that from Turkey, we are announcing that those states which interfere in the internal affairs of

Syria should end their policy,” the statement said. The protesters held placards, one of which read, “As victims of the first genocide in the 20th century, the Armenians demand that the demands of all oppressed peoples in the world should be fulfilled.”

Stand presenting Azerbaijani version of Aghdam events taken place in 1992 was destroyed in Turkey In Turkey, a group of unknown men attacked the stand representing the Azerbaijani version of Aghdam events taken place in 1992 and known by the Azerbaijani side as “Khojalu”. According to “Haber7.com” seven people have been beaten as a result of the incident. To the event of collecting signatures for proAzerbaijani petition, organized by the Hekberyu Tyurkchilyar Association a group of oppositionists rushed in, smashed the stand and attacked the persons responsible for the event beating them with stones, sticks and glass bottles. Anastasiades Wins Cypriot Presidential Election

Syria Ready For Talks With Armed Opposition

Center-right leader Nicos Anastasiades has won the Cypriot presidential election with 57.5% of the vote, BBC News reports. It was a comfortable victory over Communist-backed Stavros Malas on 42.5%. Malas has admitted defeat. Anastasiades takes power as Cyprus stands on the brink of bankruptcy, hit by the knockon effect of Greece’s economic woes. He favors a quick deal with foreign lenders to finalize a bailout of the Cypriot economy. “My first priority is to reinstate Cyprus’ credibility,’’ Anastasiades, 66, said in a victory speech in front of his jubilant supporters in the capital Nicosia. “I’m determined to work together with our EU partners, and - at the same time - fulfill our responsibilities to the utmost. I am committed to making all the necessary measures to steer our country out of the economic crisis.’’ Supporters of Anastasiades’s Democratic Rally party waved Cypriot and Greek flags and set off firecrackers across the island. The Cypriot economy is in recession and the state has little money in its accounts. Cyprus

Syria is ready for talks with its armed opponents, Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said on Monday, February 25 in the clearest offer yet of negotiations with rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, Reuters reported. But Moualem said at the same time Syria would pursue its fight “against terrorism”, alluding to the conflict with rebels in which the United Nations says 70,000 people have been killed. Assad and his foes are locked in a bloody stalemate after nearly two years of combat, destruction and civilian suffering. “We are ready for dialogue with everyone who wants it...Even with those who have weapons in their hands. Because we believe that reforms will not come through bloodshed but only through dialogue,” Russia’s Itar-Tass news agency quoted Moualem as saying. He was speaking in Moscow at a meeting with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Moaz Alkhatib, head of the opposition Syrian National Coalition, said in Cairo he had not had held any contacts about talks with Damascus, but had postponed trips to Russia and the

first asked the EU for a bailout last July to shore up its banks. Because of the bailout deal for Greece, and the restructuring of its debts, which saw private bondholders suffer big losses, Cypriot banks lost about 75% of their investments. However, the Cypriot bailout deal has foundered in protracted negotiations. The new president will have to finalize a deal with the other 16 countries that use the euro and with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Turkey rejects Kurd oil and gas export pipelines, Iraq says

Concern For The Syrian People

Turkey has told Iraq it will reject any extension of oil and gas pipelines from Kurdistan without the approval of the Baghdad government, Iraq’s oil minister Abdul Kareem Luaibi was quoted as saying by the state media network on Monday, February 25, Reuters reported. Iraq’s Arab-led central government and the Kurdistan regional government (KRG), run by ethnic Kurds, are in a long-running dispute over how to exploit the country’s crude reserves and divide the revenues. Baghdad says it alone has the authority to control export of the world’s fourth largest oil reserves, while the Kurds say their right to do so is enshrined in Iraq’s federal constitution, drawn up following the U.S.-led invasion of 2003. “Turkey has officially informed Iraq it rejects extending oil and gas export pipelines from the Kurdistan region to pass through Turkey without approval from federal government,” the network quoted the minister as saying. Kurdistan’s Minister for Natural Resources Ashti Hawrami said earlier this month the autonomous region was pressing ahead with plans to build its own oil export pipeline to Turkey, despite objections from the United States, which fears the project could lead to the break-up of

Moscow’s position on Syria stems from its concern for the Syrian people, and not the fate of President Bashar al-Assad, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday, Feb 25, according to RIA Novosti. “Russia’s position is not predetermined by support of personalities; it is dictated by concern about the fate of the Syrian people, our long-standing friend and partner, and the fate of a country which has a very long history,” he said at a news conference with his Syrian counterpart Walid Mouallem. The United States has called for Assad to step down, but Russia says it is concerned that the Syrian president’s forced departure would make the conflict worse. Russia would like to see Syria as an independent and united country with all sections of society living in peace and stability, regardless of their political sympathies and resolving their domestic problems without outside interference, Lavrov said. The number of political forces favoring a political settlement in Syria is growing, Lavrov claimed, adding there is no acceptable alternative to a settlement through a political dialog between the Syrian government and the opposition. “There are sensible forces that are becoming increasingly aware of the need for an early start

Iraq. Resource-hungry Turkey has heavily courted Iraqi Kurds, straining ties with the Iraqi central government. Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki’s media advisor Ali al-Moussawi said Turkey’s rejection of the pipeline would help enhance bilateral relations between Ankara and Baghdad, which have deteriorated over the past year. Ankara has been locked in a war of words with Maliki, a Shi’ite, since December 2011, when he ordered the arrest of his Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, who took refuge in Kurdistan before fleeing to Turkey.

Did the Pope quit to dodge blame for misdeeds or just to do the right thing? Italian newspaper La Repubblica has reported that the Pope was overwhelmed when presented with evidence in mid-December last year (collected in “two volumes of almost 300 pages – bound in red”) of a network of highly-placed Vatican priests who did not only engage in illicit homosexual “worldly relations” with outsiders, but let themselves be blackmailed by their gay lovers. Among the listed locations for alleged trysts were a sauna, a beauty parlor, and even a residence used by an archbishop. The newspaper claims it was then that Pope decided that he could not carry on, declaring that he was “no longer suited” to the demands of the job during his resignation speech earlier this month. With cack-handedness that marked public relations throughout Benedict’s term, the Vatican immediately issued a denial that almost invited more speculation. “Neither the cardinals’ commission nor I will make comments to confirm or deny the things that are said about this matter. Let each one assume his or her own responsibilities. We shall

not be following up on the observations that are made about this,” said Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman. The media quickly latched onto to the simultaneous announcement on Friday of a transfer of Ettore Balestrero, a senior clergyman, to a new prestigious post in Colombia, saying it was intended to get him out of the Vatican after unnamed transgressions. This forced Lombardi into making a second statement on the same day. The spokesman shot the insinuations down as “absurd, totally without foundation”, saying the decision had been made weeks ago.

Argentina Accuses Uk Of ‘Defiance’ Of Anti-Nuke Treaty Argentina has lashed out at the UK for allegedly violating an international treaty and sending submarines with nuclear weapons capacity to the Falkland Islands- a nuclear-free zone.“We currently are in an unstable stage of the implementation of the Tlatelolco treaty, which bans

nuclear arms in Latin America and the Caribbean. [The Treaty] is being defied by the United Kingdom,” MercoPress quoted Eduardo Zuain, Argentina’s Foreign Relations secretary, as saying prior to the Disarming Conference at the UN.

United States “until we see how things develop”. Syria’s government and the political opposition have both suggested in recent weeks they are prepared for some contacts - softening their previous outright rejection of talks to resolve a conflict which has driven nearly a million Syrians out of the country and left millions more homeless and hungry. But the opposition has said any political solution must be based on the removal of Assad, whose family has ruled Syria since 1970.

of negotiations and a political settlement. The number of those supporting this realistic line is growing,” he said. The situation in Syria is at a critical point, with the escalation of the conflict threatening the disintegration of the Syrian state and society, he said. Mouallem repeated the Syrian government’s claim that the conflict in Syria is “a war against terrorism” spearheaded by al-Qaeda. “One of al-Qaeda’s branches is conducting the main combat actions in Syria and it has brought into Syria militants from 28 countries, including from Chechnya,” he said. He reiterated the Syrian government’s readiness for dialog with the opposition, “even those with weapons in their arms.”

Billions at stake: US and BP clash in court over Gulf oil spill Oil giant BP is in court this week to begin what is expected to be a lengthy legal battle that could cost the company billions of dollars in additional penalties for their part in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP, or British Petroleum, averted a US Department of Justice criminal investigation last year by pleading guilty to manslaughter and other charges for their role in the April 20, 2010 disaster that left 11 men dead and millions of gallons of oil in the Gulf. In order to settle those charges, BP paid the US government $4.5 bil-

lion in penalties and another $7.8 billion to businesses and residents affected by the spill. As a civil trial starts in New Orleans, Louisiana this week, though, the oil corporation could be asked to pay as much as billions of dollars in added fines. “In terms of sheer dollar amounts and public attention, this is one of the most complex and massive disputes ever faced by the courts,” Fordham University law professor Howard Erichson tells the Associated Press.
