Digester Mixing System

Landia GasMix for Anaerobic Digesters
Landia GasMix
Digester Mixing System
Landia GasMix is the ideal mixing solution for anaerobic digesters. Most importantly it is all externally mounted with no rotating equipment inside the digester. The entire system, including the nozzles, is mounted on the outside of the digester.
Landia GasMix is hence the only digester mixing system where the digester never has to be opened for service or repair of its mixing system. This advantage also leads to significantly improved Health and Safety conditions.
It is suitable for most types of digesters and is suitable for a wide variety of sludges with a TS concentration of up to 14%.

digester is drawn into the pump where solids are chopped before being discharged and pumped back into the digester. This accelerates the digestion process and prevents clogging of pipes and nozzles.
In the first stage of the mixing process, the sludge is injected into the upper half of the tank while biogas is aspirated from the top of the tank and mixed into the sludge.
In the second stage of the mixing process, the sludge is injected into the lower half of the tank causing powerful mixing of the tank contents.
Depending on the type and size of the digester there might be a third stage where the sludge is injected into the very upper part of the digester preventing solids from building up a layer of crust on the surface.

Landia GasMix Digester System
Mixing Nozzle – Upper (Crust Breaker)
The sludge is re-circulated through the upper mixing nozzle in order to create a rotational movement in the upper part of the digester and to avoid, or even break down, crust on the liquid surface.
Mixing Nozzle – Lower
The sludge is re-circulated through the lower mixing nozzle in order to create a rotational movement in the lower part of the tank and to avoid settlement on the tank floor.

Landia GasMix Nozzle
The uniqueness of the Landia GasMix lies in the design of the GasMix nozzle. Years of development has gone into this to achieve the most efficient performance. When sludge is pumped through the GasMix nozzle, biogas is sucked from the gas holding part of the digester, mixed with the sludge and injected under pressure back into the digester, creating not only a horizontal mixing pattern but also a vertical pattern: true 3D-mixing.

Landia GasMix Chopper Pump
A key component in the GasMix system is the chopper pump. In addition to providing the correct flow and pressure for the GasMix nozzles its integrated chopping device will chop solids into smaller particles, resulting in improved biogas process.

Case studies
Gigablok WWTP, PL
The Gigablok wastewater treatment plant in Katowice is one of the region’s key facilities responsible for processing and purifying wastewater. The plant continually seeks innovative solutions to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs. It receives sewage from the northern districts of Katowice. Approximately 8.4 million m3 of sewage is treated here annually.
Challenge:
One of the major challenges it faced was its outdated mixing system in the digestion chambers, which no longer met modern efficiency standards. To address this issue, Gigablok decided to upgrade to the technologically advanced Landia GasMix system.
Solution:
This unique solution places all mechanical components outside the digestion chamber, eliminating the risk of internal mechanical failures.
Moreover, the installation of the new system was carried out without the need to empty the chambers, reducing costs and minimizing operational downtime.

Results:
Overall: The plant has achieved better biogas production, enhancing its energy efficiency. Additionally, the new system has contributed to more effective sludge decomposition, positively impacting the overall quality of the plant's operations.
Improved stability of the fermentation process: The new system provided even and effective mixing, which resulted in more stable conditions in the fermentation chambers. This reduced the risk of process disruptions and increased the amount of high-quality biogas produced.
Gigablok exemplifies a modern approach to wastewater treatment management, combining technological innovation with a focus on efficiency and environmental care. The Landia GasMix system has become a key element of this transformation, leading to significant improvements in the plant's performance.

Scottish Water's Nigg Sludge Facility, UK
Scottish Water's Nigg Wastewater Treatment Works in Aberdeen has become a pioneering site for biogas production. With the goal of achieving Carbon Net Zero by 2040, the facility has made significant advancements, particularly with the installation of Landia’s digester mixing system.
Challenge:
Nigg’s existing infrastructure faced inefficiencies and blockages, leading to lost volume and energy production issues. The site needed a robust, cost-effective solution to enhance biogas production and improve operational efficiency.
Solution:
Scottish Water installed Landia's externally-mounted digester mixing system, which significantly reduced maintenance costs and improved mixing efficiency.
The new system increased gas production to over 400 cubic meters per tonne of dry solids, with reduced energy consumption - down to just 7 watts per cubic meter.
Results:
Energy Efficiency: The new system operates at reduced energy levels, leading to significant savings.
Overall Efficiency: The Landia GasMix system has led to an increase in the biogas production compared to the “old” digester mixer.
Operational Resilience: The facility now exports surplus energy to the National Grid and has halved its CO2 emissions.
Cost Savings: Nigg saves £0.5M annually on fuel oil, with improved overall operational efficiency.
Scottish Water is considering expanding this successful model to six additional sites, bringing the utility closer to its net-zero targets and setting a new standard in the industry.

Damhusåen Treatment Plant, DK
Following the failure of a top-mounted mixer at the Damhusåen wastewater treatment plant, BIOFOS, Copenhagen’s leading utility company, turned to Landia’s GasMix system. This decision marked a shift from traditional top-mounted mixers to an externally mounted system, offering both operational and investment benefits.
The client needed a reliable and efficient solution to replace the broken mixer in one of the digester tanks at Damhusåen. The traditional mixer required extensive upgrades, leading to downtime and safety risks.
Challenge:
Landia’s GasMix system was installed as an externally mounted alternative. This innovative system enables biogas and sludge recirculation, improving mixing efficiency without the need for internal mechanical components. This enhances safety and reduces maintenance costs.
The installation was carried out on a full tank using the Hot Tap Drilling method, eliminating the need to empty the digester.

Safety: Maintenance is performed outside the tank, eliminating the need for staff to enter hazardous zones.
Efficiency: The Landia GasMix system has proven an increased efficiency compared to the former, vertical mixer. The digester is now fully homogenized with no sedimentation or surface crust.
Cost-Effective: Easier installation and reduced operational interruptions compared to traditional mixers.
The GasMix system is a forward-thinking solution, setting new standards in biogas production and safety.

Landia GasMix: Install Without Emptying the Digester
The Landia GasMix system can be installed by drilling into the tank without the need for emptying it. This ensures that the tank remains full throughout the process, as all work is performed externally.
The installation begins with the placement of the tank wall connections, followed by drilling through the tank wall to about halfway in. A sealing ring is then applied to ensure a secure and leak-proof fit. The system is manually inserted, eliminating the requirement for a complete digester emptying.

No Downtime
Cost Efficient
Safe and quicker Installation
