Educationthrivesonstabilityandtrust.Whenstudentsfeelsecure,theycanfocus onlearning,formingfriendships,anddevelopingthecriticalthinkingskills necessarytonavigatetheworld.Butwhenfearreplacestrust,learningbecomes
impossible.Astudentwhoworriesaboutbeingbullied,harassed,orcaughtina violentincidentcannotfullyengageintheclassroom.Accordingtoeducational psychologists,safety—bothphysicalandemotional—isthefoundationof Maslow’shierarchyofneeds (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs). Onlywhen studentsfeelprotectedcantheyachievehigherlevelsofmotivation,creativity, andacademicsuccess.
Safeschoolsgobeyondlockeddoorsorsecuritycameras.Theyareplaceswhere everystudentfeelsseen,respected,andsupported.Physicalsafetymeasuresare essential,butsoareemotionalsafeguardssuchasanti-bullyingprograms,mental healthresources,andinclusiveschoolculturesthatcelebratediversityratherthan punishdifference.

Thehopeisthatpolicymakers,schooladministrators,andlawenforcementcan usethisdatatoinformpreventionstrategiesandresourceallocations.
Intotal,from2020through2024,participatingagenciesreportedmorethanone millioncriminalincidentsatschoollocations,involvingapproximately1.5million victimsand1.2millionknownoffenders.
