Greetings from the FABULOUS Greater Channel Chapter of Houston, Texas, proudly representing the South Central Region of Jack & Jill of America.

The Greater Channel Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, was established in 1994. It has grown over the years through the vision and mission of each of its past Presidents – Glenda Thibeaux (19941996), Pat Pellerin (1996-2000), Carolyn McCray (2000-2002), Debra Johnson (2002-2005), Dawana M. Lewis Scott (2005-2006), Cheryl Fleming (2006-2008), Renee Lewis (2008-2010), Barbara Pierce (20102012), Melanie Flowers (2012-2014), Paula Harris (2014-2016), Demetra Jones (2016-2018), Trela Parker (2018-2020), Stacey Frank (2020-2022) and Juantongia Calvin (2022- present).

The Greater Channel Chapter hosted Area Workday (1996), the Regional Mother’s Conference (2005), with other Houston area chapters, the National Convention (2006) and Children’s Cluster in 2013. We hosted Teen Conference in June 2017, the first on a college campus at the University of Houston.

In 2019, we celebrated 25 years of making a difference in the lives of children and families. We are proud to have members of Greater Channel that serve and have served Jack & Jill at the area, regional and national levels.

The Greater Channel Chapter Associate Group was formed under the leadership of Mattie Sharp and Barbara Auzenne in 2000.

Jack & Jill of America, Inc.

Jack and Jill boasts 252 chapters nationwide, representing more than 40,000 family members. Each chapter plans annual programming activities guided under a general five point programmatic thrust: cultural awareness, educational development, health (education and advocacy), civic (legislative advocacy and service) and social/recreational areas. Through service projects, Jack and Jill of America creates a medium of contact for children to stimulate their growth and development. Through lobbying, educational programming, dissemination of education materials, and the organization of community and charitable events, Jack and Jill has promoted the public awareness and interests of children including child development, child growth, child quality of life, child care and the promotion of children’s rights.

We are finally in the year of The Greater Channel Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc.’s Black Family Ski Weekend! Our snowy celebration of Black History Month at Diamond Peak Ski Resort and the Hyatt Regency Hotel Spa & Casino in Lake Tahoe, Nevada will not disappoint.

This ski adventure is fluid. Each family vacays at their own pace. By day, enjoy your own adventures, just luxuriate at the spa or try your luck at the Casino.

At night we will jam out to 90’s Beats in The Greater Channel Disco! The Greater Channel Mothers are ready to host you and celebrate Black History with you. We are spotlighting our Veterans at the Black History Program. When you register, please indicate your military status. This issue includes details about specially selected excursions. There are helicopter rides over Lake Tahoe, a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Carson City, the chance to zip around Lake Tahoe in a Polaris, get cozy on a sleigh ride, go sledding with the kids and enjoy a complimentary S’mores Kit with your families at any of the many firepits.

The links to book each excursion will be in the issue distributed to registered families. In this issue please review the important family registration deadlines. Families will be able to late register from January 7th through January 30th .

Registration CLOSES on February 1, 2023. After the close, guests will not benefit from the blocked room rate. Please check out the Hyatt, Incline Village and the Amazing Adventures curated for our families. Additional hand selected excursions will be included in the next update. SKI & SNOWBOARD LESSONS

The Child Ski Center provides a safe and fun learning environment for kids ages 3-6 of all abilities. Children have a separate learning area, private "magic carpet" Pete's Powerline surface lift and low child-to-instructor ratio of 6:1 max.

Group, private, and semi-private lessons are available for children 4-6 years old.

Ski & Snowboard Lessons (ages 7+) feature professional instructors, low student-to-instructor ratios, gentle slopes, and a friendly environment.

Diamond Peak is perfect for Jack & Jill Families and Guest Families. Diamond Peak caters to families with children by offering a Child Ski Center, Free Lift Tickets for children under 6, miles of groomed slopes, beginner terrain park features, and Lake Tahoe's most breathtaking view for the whole family to enjoy. Embark on a fun and unique tour experience as you explore the Lake Tahoe area in a helicopter. See waterfalls, lakes, and mountains from above, reaching an elevation of 9,984 feet. Admire the views as you head to Emerald Bay along the mountains over Cascade Lake, then past Mount Talla and over the shoreline of Fallen Leaf Lake.

Fly over Glen Alpine Creek and marvel at the falls below. Continue climbing towards Pyramid Peak and admire the landscape below, dotted with lakes and waterfalls.
