As we close out the second term, we’re excited to present this newsletter, filled with highlights from school life and. Enjoy this edition, featuring some truly memorable photos!

DRAMA

After a busy start of Term 2, with 60 students successfully passing their LAMDA performance exams, a small ensemble cast of senior school students, led by Miss Natalia Davies, performed a highly creative and engaging performance on Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days”.

The JS swim squad enjoyed a hugely successful FOBISIA Swimming competition at Thanyapura in Phuket, Thailand. The students broke a number of FOBISIA records and won lots of medals.

The Senior School has participated overseas in FOBISIA Golf and Badminton, plus the U13 FOBISIA Games in Thailand. We have also enjoyed success at KISAC competitions this term including HS Boys & Girls Basketball, MS Boys & Girls Volleyball and Swimming and Table Tennis.

FOBISIA Badminton

This March, NLCS Jeju sent a squad of 19 students to the first ever badminton FOBISIA held at Singapore International School Bangkok Pracha Uthit (SISB PU). NLCS Jeju was the only Korean school in a pool of ten schools, seven of which were from Bangkok and two which were from Malaysia. Led by captain Yebeen (Eban) Seo, the students overcame a variety of challenges, including long transit times, difficult opponents, and hiking up and down three flights of stairs between two sports halls—all in hot and humid weather! A big thank you goes out to coaches Adam Lim, Yushi Ashford, and QingYang Yuan, for their support and effort in making the trip a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

TRIPS AND SERVICE

Year 8 Singapore Student Exchange Trip

This term we took 12 Year 8 students on an exchange program to experience life at our sister school, NLCS Singapore, whilst also exploring the culture and sights of the city. The students attended lessons, assemblies and house competitions with their buddies across the week. They also visited many iconic locations across Singapore such as The Gardens by the Bay, the Singapore Zoo Night Safari, China Town, Dragon Boating on the Kallang River and much more. In May, NLCS Jeju will welcome the 12 buddies to our school and beautiful island.

British Biology Olympiad

NLCS Jeju celebrates Neurodiversity Celebration Week hosted by the Cultural Awareness Committee and The Inclusion Department.

The British Biology Olympiad (BBO) is a prestigious national competition that challenges and stimulates gifted students with an interest in biology, encouraging them to extend their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the subject beyond the classroom. We are proud to announce the outstanding achievements of our students in this year’s BBO:

Gold Awards were earned by Soowhan Jun, Gaby, and Seongmin Hong, placing them among the top performers nationally.

Silver Awards were achieved by Minseo Kang, Serah Chung, and Gyeongeun (Selina) Lee, recognizing their strong performance and deep biological insight.

Bronze Awards were awarded to Junseok Lee and Younghoon (Daniel) Kim, acknowledging their commendable effort and proficiency in the subject.

Congratulations to all participants for their hard work and exceptional accomplishments.

CHEMISTRY

There is a legend associated with Suwolbong (The local mountain), involving a brother, Nokgo, and his sister, Suwol. Long ago, the story goes, Suwol climbed the cliff to find the medicinal herb called Ogal for their sick mother but fell to her death. Nokgo died crying from the sadness of losing his sister. Since then, the natural springs that flow from the cliff have been called “Nokgo’s tears” and the peak “Suwolbong” or “Nokgoanl oreum” has been named after the siblings, Nokgo and Suwol. However, Nokgo’s tears, in fact, are rainwater that infiltrates through the volcanic ash strata of the cliffs and then flows from the cliff after failing to pass through an impervious stratum composed of muddy sediment beneath the ash layers.

Students spent the day sampling water from the very sites shown in the photos to see if water samples across the trail are drinkable according to modern standards. Students sampled and tested the water on site and at the end of the olle trail hike we took a well deserved break for coffee and local dried squid and cuttlefish. Students then took their water samples back to the lab to titrate them for oxygen content using skills and ideas learned in the classroom. A great day and an excellent job by our graduating Year 13 students!

Term 2 has been a hugely successful time for our boarding community and although we look forward to our rest and recuperation through the break, we can all look back on some wonderful memories!

This term has seen the first ever residential trip to the mainland for a boarding home as Aewol travelled en masse to Busan for an exeat weekend. We have also enjoyed more interhome competitions and interhome events than ever before, and we have seen the number of boarders grow from term one into term two with another 11 students joining after the break! We are always happy to embrace new members into our community!

We finish the term, as ever, with a wonderful celebration to recognise our excellent student efforts in upholding and demonstrating our core values. Scholarship - Critical thinking - Open mindedness - Caring - Curious - Character - Agency - Responsibility.

Starting with a special boarders only BBQ meal, we then moved into the PAC for our Values awards night. Winners from each house were presented with certificates and small gifts for collecting the most value points in a term or for representing the boarding home spirit the best.

For the first time ever we combined our celebration with a friendly Battle of the Bands competition, congratulations to Hyeopjae Home for being the eventual winners, and we also named the boarding home captains for the next academic year (taking up their posts after the easter break to allow our Year 11s more time for much need exam preparation)

Your boarding home captains for AY 2025/26 are:

Aewol - Brain Kim

Pyeoseon - Jennifer Sung

Halla East - Michaella Jun

Yongduam - Yongjae Ahn

Iho - Jade Koh

Halla North - Elliott Lee

A fine crop of students who will work together to continually improve our already world leading provision!

Another Term of exciting and competitive House Competition

This term has been a busy one for the Music Department: all in all 12 concerts in a 10week term, our students’ compositions recorded by a live string orchestra, and even the first-ever NLCS School Music Festival - phew, there’s nothing our musicians can’t do!
