Geomn House Commendations
No. 2

It has been a very mixed year for Geomun House. As Geomuners we are proud and committed competitors who are used to the taste of success. But it is safe to say that this year has challenged us in a different way, in that success and victories in the House Competition have been much more difficult to come by. We were very proud of our third successive victory in the Commercial Dance Competition, and have enjoyed further victories in Public Speaking, Mathletics, Scrabble Scramble, House quiz, Gameshow and Capture the Flag. However, we all shared the disappointment of not placing in the House Singing, having won it for the last two years - we win together and we lose together! Transition has been our strategic focus this term, and it’s certainly a hot topic at the moment. With Year 11 leaders stepping aside and the new Geomun Leadership Committee beginning to take shape, there are many reasons to be optimistic. The new leadership group is full of energy and ideas and they have already learned so much as the House Competition Events keep on coming thick and fast. It was an absolute delight to see our Year 9 Geomun Students recognised as the most successful Year 9 students in the House Competition, they have been a real ‘power house’ for us. We also have reasons to be hopeful in the remaining competition events. Although results have not been confirmed yet, we’ve had a strong Sports Day and Canon’s Cup performance, an excellent Hype video entry (thank you Ryan!), and some House Art that is sure to pique the interest of the judges. We know the overall competition is tight, but we also know that it’s not done and dusted just yet!

Year Reflection
Y7 - Sanghyo (Belle) Ji
The Year of Geomun started off with a quick icebreaker in tutor class, followed up by many classes that started as soon as the year began. One of the first major house competitions was the house singing competition. All of Geomun and our tutor did our best in it, participating in practices no matter the time. There was also the House singing and Glee, which we all enjoyed participating as a house. After that, we made our way through the E-sports, Drone dash, swimming, sports, math and puzzles. We gave our best during cross country and took part in a full day of events and cheering on Sports Day. As the year came to a close, we celebrated Arts Week, with both Junior and Senior School students involved and assisting. Overall, this year for Geomun was a success, a year that told us “We do not lead; we are lead.”
Y8 - Jake Park
Over the course of this year, our Year 8 group in Geomun has gone through a number of moments that shaped our time together. From the challenges we faced to the moments of success, we managed to keep a sense of teamwork and commitment. Some of our biggest highlights such as Scrabble Scramble and cricket gave us opportunities to demonstrate collaboration and collective effort. We worked together as a group, making sure everyone felt part of it. Sports Day was also a significant part of the year, where house spirit and enthusiasm was visible and everyone tried their best. Whether we were on the field or cheering from the sidelines, we made sure we got involved, producing many positive results. Although this year wasn't the most successful or perfect year, it was still one where most of us stayed engaged and found ways to enjoy the experience together.

Year Reflection
Y9 - Hyunseo (Tyga) Lee
Looking back at our journey this year as part of Geomun House, it’s true that we couldn’t achieve the satisfying results we had hoped for in many of the competitions. But strangely enough, that didn’t discourage us. In fact, it brought us closer together and strengthened our house spirit more than ever. This unity was especially clear during the sports events, like volleyball and basketball. Whether we won or lost, we played with energy, teamwork, and pride. We believe that’s what really defined our house this year. As this marks both the end of the year and the end of our time in middle school, we look ahead to the next stage. Entering Key Stage 4 and stepping into high school, we carry with us the experience, the growth, and the determination to make Geomun House great again. With stronger bonds and clearer goals, we ’ re ready to play a big part in leading our house closer to victory next term. Let’s go, Geomun!
Y10 - Jiwoong (Jason) Moon
As the 2024-2025 academic year approaches the end, the representatives from each of the tutor groups at Geomun House take a moment to reflect on our year filled with unity, collaboration, and togetherness. From sharing laughter in tutor sessions to cheering each other on during sports days, our house spirit has continued to shine. Among all the memories we've made together, the moments that stand out as the most unforgettable for me are House Singing and House Glee. In those events, we surely witnessed the true heart of Geomun, a house that knows how to come together as one. It wasn't just about singing the right notes or perfecting choreography. It was about trust, teamwork, and shared passion for the victory. Under the thoughtful and inspiring leadership of Sooin, Collin, and Eric, every voice, every engagement, and every inspiration contributed to something far greater than just leadership. We were more than individuals; we were a unified house. The process wasn't always easy. Those rehearsals gnawed on our patience, coordination, and stamina. But in those challenges, we found strength in ourselves. House leaders didn’t just lead, they listened, encouraged, and created an environment where everyone felt seen and valued. House Glee reminded us that when we cooperate and support one another, there's no limit to what we can achieve. It has become a symbol of what Geomun stands for: resilience, unity, and pride in confidently keeping our position at the top. As we step into our final year as Year 11s, we will move forward with the memory of our voices joined in unison and the unity that grew from it because together we are greater, together we are Geomun.

Transition Day

This term our Geomun Strategic focus has been ‘Transition’. Watching students move through the different stages of their education and grow, develop, learn, make friendships and overcome challenges is without doubt the most rewarding part of being a teacher. Every year we have to release our Year 11 leaders into the exam wilderness and wish them well as they begin their journey into IB; it’s always sad after they have given so much and been so committed for such a long period of time.

Simultaneously, we welcome the next generation of Geomuners as Year 6 have their first real taste of life in the Senior School and all that comes with it. Every year ‘transition’ is an exciting time, and this year was no different. The new Geomuners threw themselves into a fun filled and busy day showing real character in overcoming their nerves and I was with their energy, enthusiasm and Geomun spirit. Together we are Geomun!

Hype Video
As a Year 10 student with not much experience in choreographing, especially not with many people, I was very worried even before we started. Without anyone in our group with professional experience in the contemporary genre, we had to choreograph in a style none of us were too comfortable with. But despite all my worries, preparing for this competition was by no doubt a valuable and enjoyable experience. Thank you to Suwan Cho (Y8), Erin Kang (Y8), Abby Kim (Y8), Eric Nah (Y11) for your contribution. I will be looking forward to leading dance in Geomun next year, hopefully just as well as Eric did this year.

The process of creating the House Hype Video truly tested my tenacity as so much time and effort needed to be put into it filming extra scenes, selecting the song, and the countless hours spent in editing and polishing to create the final product which I am very proud of. Using this opportunity, I’d like to voice my gratitude towards every Geomuner who contributed to the production of the video and for being so cooperative. Special thanks to the other members of the Geomun leadership for all the feedback and support, the weeks spent building this video was a great experience.

GEOMUN Non Ducor Duco;
I am not led, I lead
The Geomun Oreum is one of three sites on Jeju recognized for their outstanding ecological and geological importance. The other two sites are Hallasan and Seongsan Ilchulbong.
Geomun House is equally recognized as an outstanding house within NLCS Jeju. The 2022-23 victory in the House Competition was founded on a sense of commitment and togetherness. Geomuners thrive in a House that develops independence and resilience in a relaxed atmosphere where friendship, loyalty and trust are paramount to our success. We win and lose as one family and are there for each other; celebrating, commiserating and supporting together.
The griffin is our symbol and they are known for guarding treasures and possessions; griffins are protectors. In heraldry, the griffin stands for courage, leadership and strength; the perfect symbol for a proud and passionate house.
