B

efore cancer became a cause embraced by communities and charities, before treatment centers dotted South Jersey and support groups gave families a voice, there was Ruth Newman Shapiro. A vibrant young mother of four, Ruth was diagnosed with cancer at a time when the word was spoken only in whispers. She and her mother, Rose, faced a painful reality: the care Ruth desperately needed wasn’t available close to home. Their days turned into long, wearying trips to Philadelphia for treatment — Ruth growing weaker and Rose feeling increasingly helpless beside her.

When Ruth died in 1960 at just 35, the loss left a void that no mother should have to bear. But Rose Newman, tiny in stature and mighty in spirit, refused to let her daughter’s struggle be in vain. Determined to turn her grief into purpose, she founded the Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer Fund — today known as the RNS Cancer & Heart Fund — an organization that has significantly changed the course of cancer and cardiac care in southern New Jersey.

“Rose wanted to bring the finest cancer care and facilities to this area — and later heart disease care — and she did,” said Roe Magliocco, president of RNS. “She started RNS in 1961 in memory of her daughter, Ruth. But many people may not realize that Rose also lost a second daughter to cancer — Sheila Newman Levin.”

According to Press reports, Levin was a 50-year-old mother of two teenagers who died of lymphoma in the mid-1970s.

Such a profound second loss could have stopped Rose in her tracks, but instead it strengthened her resolve.

In fact, many of the 600 or so volunteers that power the Ventnor-based organization have been touched by cancer. It’s what initially brings them to the cause. “It’s an awful, heartbreaking disease,” said Roe, who has her own losses to bear. “Getting involved in RNS is a tribute to your loved ones, something that you can do to give back and help others who are going through it.”

Roe got involved after moving to the shore from Philadelphia back in 2005. “I met some of the RNS ladies in exercise class,” she said. “Back then, RNS had a gift-wrapping station at the Hamilton Mall during the holiday season. They needed help scheduling the volunteers, and because I knew computers, I offered.

After that, I was hooked. I worked every fundraiser.”

Their hard work and dedication have paid off. Over the last 60-plus years, RNS has raised over $18 million, funding much-needed facilities, equipment, and programs for cancer and cardiac care.

“We recently fulfilled our $100,000 pledge to Shore for a 3D mammography machine,” said Roe. “Theirs had broken, and they had a critical need. We’ve pledged support to AtlantiCare for their tubing machines, and to Cooper for what they call the Varian pitch. That’s the part of the table that helps position patients during the TrueBeam radiation treatments. Each time, we’ve stepped in because we believe in making sure our community has the equipment it needs when people are counting on it.”

Community (CSC) at Gilda’s Club. Few people may realize that RNS helped launch Gilda’s Club locally. A generous donation of $450,000 brought Gilda’s Club to the region in 2002, providing a nonclinical place for cancer patients and their families to gather and find support.

RNS raises money through events, membership dues, memorial gifts, and other donations. “Some of the past events have gone by the wayside, such as the Showhouse at the Shore,” acknowledged Roe. “That required more of an army from contractors to electricians, roofers, decorators, etc. There was a time when RNS did tennis fundraisers, fashion shows, and runs. They even had Tony Bennett in the day.”

Today, RNS focuses on a handful of signature fundraisers that continue to draw strong community support. The summer Bag Ladies Luncheon is always a crowd-pleaser, raising significant funds through its lively auction. There’s also the much-coveted wine tasting at Sofia’s in Margate. In October, the group leads the Pink Ribbon campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness, and in February, it shines a spotlight on heart disease through the Save a Heart campaign.

of South Jersey Blinds and Beyond. “It has always been a family affair,” says Ron Rosso, owner of South Jersey Blinds and Beyond. “My dad started in the windowtreatment business in 1963. In the ’70s, I would occasionally go out with him to install shades and drapes, which were the big items at the time.” By the 1980s, Ron’s father had moved into manufacturing, and Ron spent school breaks working in the shop.

“I never really expected to enter the business myself,” he says. That changed in 1989. “I realized my dad had built something special,” Ron explains. “He had actually sold his business in ’87 and thought he was finished with the industry. But when I decided to pursue it full-time, I needed someone I trusted to manufacture my products — and no one did it better than him.” Today, 36 years later, Ron still relies on his now-86year-old father for select custom pieces, with support from Ron’s sister, niece, wife, and a longtime family friend in the fabrication room. “I’ve nicknamed them the Beautiful-Blind-Chicks; they are skilled and beautiful,” Ron says. As the company has grown, so has the family involvement. “All four of my children now work full-time in the window-treatment business,” Ron says. “It truly has been, and continues to be, a family affair.”

If you’ve never been to Boston, it is a must-do, and if you have, there is no better time to return than in 2026, the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. A clean, walkable, and vibrant city, Boston is home to many American Revolution landmarks and is filled with incredible restaurants, theatre, museums, charming neighborhoods, including the new revitalized Seaport District, and shopping that rivals Manhattan.

And then there’s the kind of local sports pride that any Philadelphia fan can appreciate.

Boston is a mere six-hour drive, and there is so much to do. As a South Jersey native who has lived in a Boston suburb for 30+ years — and I’m still told that I’m the one with the strange accent — here are a few suggestions if you’re here for a weekend.

Stay in Back Bay There are great hotels throughout the city, but I recommend staying in Back Bay, which is centrally located and walkable to many attractions. (If the weather is inclement, the T will take you almost anywhere.) Look into the historic Lenox Hotel, which has a lively, elegant bar in the lobby; the Mandarin Oriental, which is connected to the iconic Prudential Center skyscraper; or the Fairmont Copley Plaza, a landmark Boston hotel that opened in 1915.

The Back Bay neighborhood is known for its beautiful residential

streets lined with Victorian row houses that run parallel to the Charles River, including the grand, tree-lined Commonwealth Avenue, which was inspired by Parisian design, and Newbury Street, known for its shopping. In the morning, grab a coffee and walk along the Charles River Esplanade, where you’ll take in views of MIT and Harvard across the river. You can cross the river via the footbridge and spend some time touring Harvard Square, the campuses, and other sites in Cambridge.

If you’re a fan of art and architecture, do yourself a favor and take a walk through the majestic Boston Public Library on Copley Square, the first free municipal public library in the country, and spend a quiet moment in its serene courtyard. It was purposefully built as a “palace for the people” in 1848. Nowadays, there’s much more going on here than reading. Check out the BPL event schedule online.

Beacon Hill To get to Beacon Hill from Back Bay, you’ll cross the lovely Public Garden, a 24-acre Victorian-style botanical garden that is home to the famous Make Way for Ducklings statues, installed to pay homage to the 1941 children’s book by Robert McCloskey. The Public Garden is known for its collection of exotic trees, and in the spring, it is bursting with color. It’s a great family attraction as kids love to interact with the sculptures and during the summer months, take a ride on the famed Swan Pontoon boats that cross the beautiful pond populated by ducks and swans.

Beacon Hill is just beyond the duckling sculptures. Follow Beacon Street, and you’ll pass the goldendomed Massachusetts State House, built in 1798, that sits on the Boston Common, where you can ice skate NJLifestyleMag.com

The North End is home to major American Revolution sites. You can tour Paul Revere’s house, the beautiful Old North Church, and see its steeple, where the famed “one if by land, two if by sea lantern signal hung to warn colonists that British Troops were coming.

It also marks the start of the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile red-lined walking path that connects 16 historically significant sites, including museums, churches, and burying grounds.

Among them, you’ll wind through Faneuil Hall Marketplace, a great place to take the family, as it is a hub for street performers. If the food court is not what you had in mind, you are a short walk from the Union Oyster House, the oldest restaurant in Boston, and, the owners say, the oldest continuously running restaurant in the USA. n

s the founder of Passion Vines, I’ve watched the wine world evolve into a curious, informed, and adventurous landscape over the last twenty years. For our January column, here are the trends I’m betting will shape 2026 — and concrete actions you can take to taste, learn, and expand your palate. A heartfelt thanks to our readers, guests, and friends who make every tasting, event, and conversation possible.

1) Transparency and Terroir at the Forefront Wine lovers want stories they can trust. Producers are embracing clearer disclosures on vineyard practices, climate considerations, and sourcing. Expect more natural and minimal-intervention styles presented with precise farm-to-glass narratives.

Action: Seek wines labeled with vineyard maps and or producer notes, and attend producer-led tastings that unpack terroir and farming choices. At Passion Vines, we’ll be continuing our guided tastings that feature passionate farmers, producers, and winemakers from around the world.

2) Climate-Driven Diversity: Regions Redefining the Glossary As weather patterns shift, regions adapt with new grape blends and innovative winemaking. You’ll see more experiments with new varieties in familiar regions (and more statements from regions once considered offbeat). Expect more fortified, pétillant, and age-worthy options from unexpected corners.

Action: Try a grape or region you’ve overlooked. Pick up a bottle from a producer or importer you don’t typically buy from. “Open That Bottle Night” at Passion Vines is a great way to explore hidden regions and bold profiles.

3) Lower-ABV, Higher-Expression Wines Lower alcohol, higher aroma and texture wines are gaining momentum — think balanced, food-friendly wines that pair with modern Mediterranean and global cuisine. The emphasis is on energy, acidity, and storytelling rather than heaviness.

Action: Build a tasting flight around lighter-styled bottles — rosé, dry sparkling, and cool-climate whites. Challenge yourself to pair a lowABV wine with a tasting menu or a weeknight dinner.

4) The Rise of Wine Education as a Social Practice Consumers aren’t just buying wine; they’re building rituals — club memberships, family-style tastings, and education-forward events.

The social experience is a product in itself.

Action: Create a monthly “Wine & Wonder” night with friends — rotate hosting, choose a theme (native grape varieties, sparkling celebrations, or regional tables). Sign up for a series at Passion Vines like Wine Foundations.

5) Sustainability as Standard, Not a Buzzword From packaging to production, sustainability becomes a given baseline. Consumers expect environmentally minded choices, including recycled packaging, reduced carbon footprints, and ethical sourcing.

6) Diversified Occasion Wines Wine isn’t only for special occasions. Every day, celebrants are seeking wines that elevate meals, adventures, and social moments — packing flavor and curiosity into every pour.

Action: Create an “Everyday Extraordinary” shelf — choose approachable wines with elevated character for daily meals. Plan a Sunday pairing brunch that includes a sparkling, a white, a red, and a dessert wine, each matched to a course.

The Benefits of Gratitude Every new year brings the chance to reset — not just our routines but our mindset. And one of the most impactful practices we can lean into is gratitude, a simple habit with profound benefits for our mental, emotional, and physical health.

he beginning of a new year feels like a clean page, full of possibilities and fresh energy.

Even in a hectic and uncertain world, the new year invites us to pause and choose how we want to move forward. We all face challenges, but each one gives us the chance to grow stronger and more aware of the meaningful moments in our day.

While we cannot control everything that happens, we can lean into one powerful tool that shapes how we experience it all: gratitude.

Gratitude is not pretending life is perfect or ignoring real problems. It is not forcing a smile when we are stressed, grieving, or exhausted. Gratitude is simply choosing to notice what remains good or meaningful even in hard seasons. That shift in perspective changes our bodies, our minds, and the way we move through life.

Author and Psychologist Robert Emmons, a leading researcher on gratitude, emphasizes that gratitude is more than a feeling. It is a practice that strengthens relationships, improves health, boosts emotional well-being, and helps offset negative emotions like envy and worry. Science backs this up. People who regularly practice gratitude tend to sleep better, feel

less stressed, and experience more optimism and life satisfaction. Medical research links gratitude to lower rates of depression, better emotional balance, and even healthier markers for the heart.

Gratitude can also activate parts of the brain involved in pleasure, bonding, and emotional regulation. This helps quiet the constant “fight or flight” mode many of us live in. Over time, our bodies spend less time in that stressed state, which matters enormously for long-term health.

Mentally, gratitude redirects our attention from what is missing or frightening to what is stable or hopeful. Our brains naturally scan for threats; it’s useful for survival but not for peace of mind.

Gratitude balances the picture. Psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky is the author of The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting The Life You Want.

She describes gratitude as an antidote to envy, irritation, and worry, softening the grip of negative emotions by helping us recognize what is going right.

Of course, gratitude is easy when life is smooth. Its real power shows up when life feels messy: a tough

During challenging times, gratitude reminds us that our lives are bigger than the problem in front of us. A stressful day might still include a kind message from a friend, a warm meal, or a calming moment with a pet. These small moments are not trivial. They anchor us when everything else feels uncertain.

Gratitude is also a skill. It grows with practice. Instead of waiting to feel grateful, we can train ourselves to notice and name what we appreciate. For many people, a digital journal makes the habit easier. Apps like Day One allow you to add photos or short videos, turning gratitude entries into a visual memory bank. A family snapshot, a morning walk, or a quick video of loved ones laughing becomes a powerful reminder of the good woven into our days. On tough days, scrolling through past entries can be surprisingly uplifting.

Regardless of the tool, the key is consistency. As Emmons notes, gratitude helps us see our lives as full of gifts, often inspiring us to share our own gifts with others.

As we step into 2026, none of us can predict what the year will bring.

There will be joys we never expected and challenges we would love to avoid. But while we cannot control the headlines or every twist in our personal lives, we can choose how we meet them.

What it does is soften our struggles and remind us of everything that is still steady, good, and worth celebrating. It helps us see the people who show up for us and the resilience we carry within us. Research even shows that writing down what went well for just one week can boost happiness and reduce depression long after.

Maybe this is the year we start a gratitude journal, try an app like Day One, or simply pause each night to ask, “What am I thankful for today?”

o quote the great William Shakespeare, “All the world is a stage…” And, all around this big world, theaters can be found in many venues. Most notably, New York has Broadway and London has its East End. However, South Jersey proudly boasts several theaters that have been offering professional plays and performances to local audiences for almost 50 years. The Cape May Stage and East Lynne Theater Company in Cape May and the Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point continue to deliver professional and innovative theater experiences. From Tennessee Williams to Neil Simon, local audiences have enjoyed live theater in their backyard — without having to travel hours away to New York or elsewhere.

Cape May Stage As one of South Jersey’s premier professional theaters, Cape May Stage has been producing plays since 1988. During its long and vibrant history, the theater has featured nationally recognized Broadway actors and musical performers, including Maureen McGovern, Christine Ebersole, and Robert Prosky. All in all, more than 30 Broadway artists have graced the Cape May Stage.

The 2025 season offered several examples that hold true to their mission. For example, the season started off with Ken Ludwig’s Dear Jack, Dear Louise — a reallife World War II love story. The final play offered that season was the world premiere of Sherlock Holmes Scandals — a radio-style performance based on two stories

by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. ​ ELTC prides itself on being a “bridge” for Cape May theater goers and visitors by connecting the past to the present through its play selections. In addition, the theater melds talent from coast to coast along with local artists and audiences that all add up to “a unique, compelling theatrical experience.”

Avid theater goer, Donna Josephs, thoroughly appreciates the Cape May theater scene. Josephs explains, “I’ve enjoyed everything from Jimmy Webb’s live music to comedies and dramas. During the pandemic, the East Lynne Theater had an outdoor performance in a back yard, which was novel and innovative. This summer, it was great to see Every Brilliant Thing in the restored church on a lovely side street. The enthusiasm of the two venues’ directors, Roy Steinber and Mark David Boberick, is contagious.”

Another ELTC “bridging” goal has been to strive for a diverse local audience — seniors and students.

Gateway Playhouse From 1920 silent films to 1976 box office hits like Taxi Driver and Rocky, the Gateway Playhouse served as a movie theater. Since closing almost 50 years ago, and after many changes and refurbishing projects, the theater has been presenting year-round entertainment, offering live musicals, plays, and concerts.

Through its theatrical history, Gateway has staged many top shows, including Funny Girl, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, White Christmas, and many more theater-goer favorites. The 2025 season finished up with a production of Into the Woods — a must-see for Stephen Sondheim fans. In 2026, the Gateway Playhouse will offer another season of popular shows for all tastes, including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar and the classic Guys and Dolls.

Shirlee DiBacco, a local actress, explains why the Gateway theater “holds a special place” in her heart. evolution NJ advances contributions to the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in New Jersey. The partnership between the New Jersey Historical Commission and the nonprofit Crossroads of the American Revolution Association, RevolutionNJ (www.revnj.org), provides an opportunity for community engagement, education, and public discourse that explores the history of the American Revolution.

As this nation’s most iconic symbol, the American flag symbolizes the sacrifices, divisions, and dreams of this country’s republic. Resolution by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, officially adopted the first official flag. There is considerable evidence that the first flag was designed by Pennsylvania Congressman, lawyer, composer, and author, Francis Hopkinson.

Mary Pickersgill of Baltimore is credited with sewing the StarSpangled Banner, which flew over Fort McHenry and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the national anthem. However, this daunting task could not have been achieved within its six-week deadline without the assistance of Grace Wisher, a 13-year-old African American indentured servant who lived and apprenticed for Mary as an opportunity to learn new skills.

New Jersey tromp l’oeil artist Gary Erbe is no stranger to creating art to commemorate historical moments.

In 1974, as the country was making plans to celebrate the 1976 Bicentennial, marking 200 years of the United States, he decided to create two monumental easel paintings as his contribution to this historical moment. The painting “Composition in Red, White and Blue” was challenging for Gary to paint because of the limited palette of red, white, and blue. He approached the painting as a modernist with intentional placement of color and the composition of the flag design.

Art eye. Look closely, and you will discover 37 Presidential portraits throughout the composition, along with a peace symbol forming a circular pattern. This historical and contemporary painting also documents the evolution of the presidency and the American flag,” says Gary.

American identity, for Gary, is based on his appreciation for being blessed to live in a country where he can express his thoughts as he wishes. With such a strong interest in history, many of Gary’s paintings in his “American Series” incorporate highly recognizable symbols such as flags, toys, and cultural artifacts.

Selecting which symbols to use and which to drive his narratives is based on the relationship between the subject matter and the content. Gary uses these playful objects to discuss serious themes.

When asked why this juxtaposition was important, Gary said, “I was brought up in the 1950s and cherish that time in my life. Much of my work reflects my experiences in that time period.” When Gary was young, he lived in a world of imagination, with no computers, cell phones, or video games.” This upbringing fed his desire for exploration, and the canvas was his way of documenting the journey.

As a traditional trompe-l’oeil painter, Gary’s career has focused on American popular culture and history.

His painting, “Pieces of Time,” is monumental, measuring 65 x 100, and was featured in an exhibition organized by the Smithsonian titled “Democracy in America.” Looking at the painting, one can easily see Gary’s nostalgic feelings captured through historical pop-cultural icons like Howdy Doody, biplanes, baseball, and Charlie Chaplin, to name but a few. Oftentimes, Gary refers to his contemporary approach to trompel’oeil, a technique he calls “Levitational Realism” because it creates the illusion of floating objects. Gary’s art has been featured in numerous exhibitions across the country, with many pieces in permanent collections, including the Butler Institute of American Art, the Brandywine River Museum, and the Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton University. n

s it true that the family that drives together, stays together? If so, Bonnie and Jerry Steiner of Margate, New Jersey, may be the poster children for family car loyalty. MANDATORY ROTH CATCH-UPS BEGIN 2026

F

or nearly a quarter century, employers have been able to offer their retirement savings plan participants age 50 and older a valuable opportunity — the chance to make additional catchup contributions to their plan.1 Thanks to the SECURE 2.0 Act passed in 2022, that opportunity became even more valuable: Employers may now allow plan participants aged 60 to 63 to contribute even more than their other catch-up eligible peers through “super catch-ups.”

In 2025, the standard plan contribution limit is $23,500. Participants who turn age 50 to 59 and 64 and older in 2025 can contribute an additional $7,500, while those who reach age 60 to 63 can contribute an additional $11,250.

However, SECURE 2.0 also included a provision requiring catch-up contributions to be made on a Roth basis for certain high-earning employees. In September 2025, the IRS issued final regulations related to these mandatory Roth catch-ups, which will begin to take effect in 2026.

The Big Picture In most work-based savings plans, employees have the opportunity to make catch-up contributions and contribute on both a pre-tax and Roth after-tax basis.2 While pre-tax contributions reduce the proportion of a participant’s paycheck that is subject to current income taxes, Roth contributions allow participants to potentially build a taxfree nest egg for the future. Withdrawals from Roth accounts made after the account owner reaches age 59½ are tax-free, provided the account has been held for at least five years. Pre-tax contributions can be especially appealing to high earners, who may contribute as much as possible (up to plan limits) to take maximum advantage of the opportunity to reduce current taxable income.

final regulations also permit plans to implement the Roth catchup requirement for taxable years beginning before 2027 using a reasonable, good faith interpretation of statutory provisions.”4 Many industry observers interpret this to mean that employers will be expected to begin implementing the new provisions in 2026.5-7 To determine whether an employee exceeds the $145,000 threshold, employers will use Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) wages listed in box 3 of the employee’s W-2 form from the previous year. To comply in 2026, employers will therefore use 2025 W-2 forms. The rule does not apply to individuals without prior-year W-2 wages, such as the self-employed.8-9 The new rule applies to standard and super catch-ups in 401(k), 403(b), and 457(b) plans; however, it does not apply to SIMPLE plans or to the special catch-up contributions permitted in 403(b) and 457(b) plans. Plans that do not currently offer Roth contributions must add a Roth option or cease allowing high earners to make catchup contributions.10-11 Tax and Retirement-Savings Impacts High earners who may be subject to the new rule may want to review their tax-planning and retirement-savings strategies soon. Although Roth contributions can potentially provide substantial tax benefits in the future, the elimination of the pre-tax catch-up benefit could noticeably impact income taxes during the 2026 tax-filing season.

However, pre-tax contributions also reduce tax revenue for the federal government. That may be why legislators included a provision in SECURE 2.0 requiring catch-up contributions for those earning more than $145,000 to be made on a Roth, rather than a pre-tax basis.

Initially slated to take effect in 2024, that provision was delayed until 2026 to allow the IRS to finalize rules and employers to modify their systems and plan documentation accordingly.3
