What’s in Store for 2026?

I’m hoping last year ended to your satisfaction. We business owners are always trying to do better than we have in the past and 2025 presented some challenges.

A low car count was the major problem for shops across the industry. Mechanical shops struggled with this in the beginning of the year, while collision shops had a second lull in the fall with steering issues. Two warm winters have taken their toll. Thankfully, we are welcoming a real Minnesota winter to “jump start” us into the new year.

Now that 2025 is in the rear-view mirror, what is in store for us in 2026? Owning an automotive business in Minnesota offers many advantages, including a strong demand for services. The necessity for transportation, the all-time high number of registered vehicles and the oldest average vehicle age in history ensures a steady demand for our services. Market dynamics suggest a trend of customers increasingly relying on independents over dealerships, wanting a more personal transaction. All we have to do is some forecasting and some planning to make this a great year.

To get ready for this year, we need to review our marketing, evaluate the current staff, keep vendors in check and take a good look at our facilities. Are there

processes that need updating or creating? Oh yeah, that elephant in the room: AI. How are we going to use it and other new technologies that keep coming? Strategically addressing these things can help us thrive this year.

I know, that all sounds great, but how do we do all this? The best way is by making sure you are connected to a group of like-minded business owners to network with.

This group, The Alliance, is just that.

Network and learn from other shop leaders as they navigate similar strategy questions. Search the member directory to find new connections to reach out to. Discussions of Fraud Remain Front and Center

Amidst national scrutiny and continued concerns over reports of fraud within state programs, Governor Tim Walz held a press conference to announce a new fraud-prevention program in Minnesota. In doing so, Gov. Walz announced the appointment of Judge Tim O’Malley as the state’s new Director of Program Integrity.

Currently the interim chief judge of the Court of Administrative Hearings, O’Malley previously served as the superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) under Gov. Tim Pawlenty. O’Malley also previously served as director of Ministerial Standards and Safe Environment with the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis to lead efforts promoting child protection and clergy accountability.

Gov. Walz also announced the state’s engagement of WayPoint, Inc., a Minnesota-based professional service firm of former law enforcement and federal special agents specializing in forensic accounting, financial investigations, health care compliance and investigations, and tax litigation support.

The issue of fraud in state programs has been getting more attention in the run up to the 2026 legislative session and has forced additional messaging and attention from Democrats. Republican lawmakers have made fraud the centerpiece of their political messaging and will likely continue to do so in 2026.

The governor did not outline specific proposals, but made it clear that this will be a priority for him heading into 2026.

After the high profile shootings in Minnesota this summer and fall, DFL lawmakers have advocated for additional gun safety measures at the state level. Given the narrow majority DFL lawmakers have in the Senate and the ongoing tie in the House, no legislation will be able to pass without Republican support. What these gun-related bills look like remains to be seen, but you can expect any legislation to face serious opposition when lawmakers consider them in St. Paul.

Minnesota Political News and Updates As we look toward the 2026 legislative session and the 2026 elections, the political landscape continues to evolve as individuals announce retirements or new political endeavors. The following are a few recent developments: • Steve Drazkowski (R-Mazeppa) announced that he will not run for office again next year. Drazkowski served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2007-2023 and has served one term as a State Senator. He is known as a conservative voice at the Legislature and has served on several different committees throughout his tenure, including taxes, transportation, agriculture and education. continued on pg. 9

Gov. Walz Returns to Discussion of Gun Control In addition to the discussion of fraud, Gov. Walz also discussed his intentions to promote a series of gun control measures in advance of the 2026 legislative session. He said he plans to take “incredibly aggressive executive actions.” He was critical of

Automotive Scholarships Available AASPMN is awarding scholarships to outstanding students enrolled in post-secondary automotive programs focused on auto service or collision repair. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $1,500 per student and may be applied toward tuition or tool purchases.

To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a Minnesota-based, ASE-accredited automotive program in the fall of 2026. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of industry professionals, with selections based on academic achievement, career goals, financial need, and written recommendations.

The application deadline is March 31, 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically or postmarked by this date.

Students are encouraged to apply online at: automotivescholarships.com/scholarships/alliance.

Online applicants are automatically considered for multiple scholarship opportunities, including awards from the University of the Aftermarket Foundation Scholarship Committee and more than 40 additional automotive aftermarket organizations and companies. AASPMN Hosts Claims Trends & Strategies Workshop On January 14, AASPMN will host “Claims Trends & Strategies” at APH Headquarters in St. Cloud. The evening workshop, presented by Kristen Felder of Collision Hub, will dive deep into the claims and economic factors impacting total losses and what strategies shops can use to ensure this does not become disappearing profits.

Understanding the dynamics of human interactions is a critical basis for negotiations. Attendees will learn the meaning behind certain behaviors and some techniques to shift the dialogue and feelings around their estimate.

Fewer 2025 Miles Per Vehicle than in 2018 as New Dynamics Power Aftermarket Growth Nationwide, the average miles per light vehicle will increase at a moderate pace this year. Nevertheless, Lang Marketing projects that during 2025, the typical car and light truck in the U.S. will travel approximately 220 fewer miles than in 2018, seven years earlier. The historic 2020 mileage plunge reflects economic and societal changes caused by the pandemic that will affect Americans’ driving habits for many more years.

Despite this, the light vehicle aftermarket will surge by more than $21 billion in product sales at user-price from 2018 to 2025. See the all-new 2026 Lang Aftermarket Annual Report for a 10-year analysis of the total annual mileage on U.S. roads, the changing yearly miles per vehicle and the annual product volume of the light vehicle aftermarket.

VIO Grows Faster than Mileage This year, the number of light vehicles in operation (VIO) will increase by approximately 0.7 percent. At the same time, total miles driven by cars and light trucks in 2025 will climb at a slightly faster pace.

As a result, the average car or light truck will be driven an estimated 1.1 percent more miles in 2025 than in 2024, but still below 2018 levels.

500 Billion Lost Miles Since 2018, the number of light vehicles on U.S. roads has increased at an average annual rate of just over 0.9 percent.

Concurrently, the annual mileage of cars and light trucks in the U.S. climbed at an average rate of 0.7 percent.

As a result, there was a total “loss” of over 500 billion light vehicle miles during these seven years, given the increased number of cars and light trucks on the road and their lower annual miles driven compared to 2018.

Aftermarket Impact of Fewer Miles According to conventional thinking, fewer miles travelled by the average car and light truck should negatively impact aftermarket product volume. However, while the average vehicle’s annual mileage has declined over the past seven years, its age has soared at a record pace, resulting in an unprecedented number of cars and light trucks over 15 years old.

Since older vehicles require more aftermarket products per mile than newer cars and light trucks, the decline in annual miles driven per vehicle has been more than offset by their rising average age, which has promoted aftermarket product growth.

Age Growth and Vehicle Nameplate Since 2018, the average age of light vehicles has climbed by more than a full year, with the number of cars and light trucks topping 15 years old soaring sharply.

Vehicle age growth has been disproportionately concentrated among domestic nameplates, helping them to stave off an even more dramatic decline in aftermarket product volume than would be expected given their shrinking population.

2020 Historic Mileage Plunge Average miles per light vehicle fell by about 220 between 2018 and 2025. This reduction was caused mainly by the double-digit collapse of travel during 2020, when COVID-19 pushed the average light vehicle’s annual mileage below 10,000.

Long-term economic and societal changes resulting from the pandemic have continued to prolong the recovery in light-vehicle mileage.

Continuing Average Annual Mileage Trend Lang Marketing expects the average vehicle’s annual miles to increase moderately during 2025 compared to last year, but to fall short of the 11,580 miles recorded in 2018.

This trend will continue for several more years.

Vehicle Age Growth Helps Offset Fewer Miles Older vehicles require more repair and maintenance products and services per mile than newer cars and light trucks.

Lang Marketing expects both the average vehicle age and the number of older vehicles in the U.S., particularly those over 15 years old, to keep climbing. This trend will help boost aftermarket light-vehicle product volume through 2025 despite the average vehicle’s annual mileage failing to reach 2018 levels.

Six Major Takeaways: • Although the average miles per light vehicle is increasing at a moderate pace this year, Lang Marketing projects that the typical car and light truck in the U.S. will travel fewer miles in 2025 than in 2018, seven years ago.

• The average light vehicle in the U.S. will be driven about 220 fewer miles during 2025 than in 2018. Nevertheless, soaring vehicle age, up by over a year, and the unprecedented number of cars and light trucks over 15 years old will be instrumental in generating more than a $21 billion surge in aftermarket product volume at userprice over these seven years.

• So far, annual miles per vehicle have not been able to overcome the dramatic impact of COVID-19, which slashed driving in 2020 at a historic rate. This double-digit mileage plunge reflected economic and societal changes caused by the pandemic that will affect Americans’ driving habits for many years to come.

• Despite the increased number of cars and light trucks on the road, their lower annual miles each year caused a total “loss” of over 500 billion light vehicle miles from 2018 to 2025. This resulted in the average vehicle’s odometer rolling up several thousand fewer miles during these seven years.

• The negative impact on aftermarket product volume from the average vehicle’s declining yearly mileage has been more than offset by the soaring age of cars and light trucks on U.S. roads and the surge in vehicles aged 15 years or more, since older vehicles use more products per mile than younger models.

• Lang Marketing expects the average annual miles of cars and light trucks to increase gradually, but the 2025

mileage for the typical light vehicle to remain lower than in 2018. Nevertheless, the light vehicle aftermarket will climb to more than $21 billion at user-price from 2018 to 2025.

• MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell formally announced he is running for governor of Minnesota as a Republican. He joins a dozen other Republican candidates hoping to deny Gov. Walz a third term. In total, 22 candidates are currently running for governor in 2026.

• Ramsey County Commissioner Raphel Ortega, the longest serving member of the Ramsey County Board, announced that he will not seek re-election in 2026.

Ortega has been a county commissioner since 1994 and is currently serving as chair of the board. Saint Paul City Council President Rebecca Noecker announced just days earlier her intent to seek Ortega’s seat and state Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega (DFL-St. Paul) announced her candidacy to fill the seat.

FUTURE TECHS ON TRAINING WHEELS: Inside AASPMN & MNCARS’ EV Scholarship Program “The automotive and collision repair industries need more young people to choose this career path, but no one wants to repair cars anymore!”

If you’ve been involved in this field for any length of time, you’ve surely heard some variation of this complaint, and though there are a multitude of organizations around the country lending their support to this growing dilemma in hopes of alleviating the workforce shortage shops are facing, the majority of these efforts focus the high school and college age groups. But by the time students have reached this stage in their education, many already have a clear vision of what their futures look like!

So, what’s the alternative? Reach them when they’re younger!

In late 2024, AASPMN and Minnesota Careers in Auto Repair and Service (MNCARS) launched a $50,000 Electric Vehicle (EV) Scholarship Program in partnership with Infento and H2I Group, helping to fund the installation of innovative STEM construction kits in schools throughout Minnesota. Ten schools benefitted from this program in 2025, but the truly exciting aspect is that these kits are inspiring consideration of an automotive career in children at younger ages than ever before!

Alexandra Jones utilizes the Infento Pro Kit in her fifth and sixth grade science classes at Bold Middle School (Olivia). “I incorporated the lessons learning about technology and engineering,” she explains. “All of my students have enjoyed using the kits and working together to build different things. Each student was given a job – whether it was putting

things together or finding the right pieces to correctly complete the project. My students who used them last year are already asking when we will be building one of the larger pieces. My new fifth grade students are also eager to get started because they saw the students from last year testing out the scooters they built and rode in the school hallways.”

It’s pretty electrifying (pun intended) to envision 10-year-olds experimenting in the automotive world, but this initiative is reaching students who are even younger!

Melissa Pedersen teaches second grade – YES, that means seven and eight year olds! – at Weaver Lake Elementary in Maple Grove.

“I use these bikes in connection with Minnesota’s second grade standards around force and motion,” she shares. Students use the Pro Kits to explore phenomena and engineering problems, being given ample opportunity to ask questions about their observations and the object’s motion before investigating how it works and analyzing the empirical evidence to better understand it. The study of physical science is incorporated as students “identify and predict quantitative patterns of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.” The project also incorporates mathematics to “represent physical variations and their relationships,” comparing their calculations to real-world expressions.

“My students are very engaged with these bikes,” Pedersen reports.

“I have designed the lessons so that one second grade class puts together half of the bike and then another class continues where they left off in order

to finish the bikes in two days. We do these bike builds as an in-house field trip. Students build bikes all day with breaks for their lunch/recess and specialists’ classes. It really helped these younger students stay in the mindset of building bikes so that they were able to get farther along in the build process. There was also less set up and clean up. Once the bikes are built (though I often need to finish up a few), students come back to ride the bikes. We only build the bike called Caterpillar, because it fits the ability level of the students and also the visual of unbalanced and balanced forces while riding the bike.”

Other participating schools target an older audience, demonstrating the diversity of the Pro Kit, and AASPMN and MNCARS’ scholarship program accounts for that by providing training for teachers to equip them with the tools and resources needed to guide students through handson projects that align with industry standards and workforce needs. By providing teachers with the necessary knowledge and support, the program aims to ensure that students receive high-quality instruction that prepares them for future careers in the automotive industry.

“The educational uses of the Pro Kits are wildly flexible, so they can be implemented for any age group and apply to just about any subject,” AASPMN Executive Director Linden Wicklund says, crediting H2I Group for providing step-bystep instructions that aid teachers in applying the curriculum to their programs.

Those efforts have gone a long way in helping instructors incorporate the Pro Kits into their curriculum.

“It is not too difficult to teach the curriculum due to having upper elementary students,” Jones insists.

“They are really great with problem solving and helping each other even if they are not in the same group. It does get tricky when some groups fall behind with the time limit I have in place for them.”

But as the students’ age decreases, the difficulty increases.

Fortunately, teachers are equipped with problem-solving strategies themselves. “These bikes were quite difficult to use at the elementary level,” Pedersen admits, but she found a solution. “In order to help the

I went through and leveled the directions with more information so that the materials were easier to find. I labeled the many bins and then marked on the instructions where to find that piece and what it was called. That way, students did not spend their time searching for the right part. I have also color-coded the bins, so students continue to go to the bins that they are using. That way, there is a better chance that the students are not using other groups’ materials.”

And those materials are pretty impressive! The Pro Kits include real

tools and materials for students to use. “The quality of the tools and supplies provided are overall really great,” Jones praises. “We have had some things break due to pieces getting stuck due to not correctly following directions, but we have learned to slow down and look at each piece with better observation skills.”

“The quality of the materials is great!” Pedersen agrees. “I love that it can withstand mistakes and can be modified quickly. I was also told during my orientation that the materials are things that can be continued on pg. 16

Wicklund particularly appreciates the high-quality tools and materials since it means “the kits will be useful for many years once a school has them.”

“When we get these items in students’ hands, they start thinking about building things and will hopefully consider an automotive career path,” she continues. “And by reaching them at a younger age – before there’s gender or socioeconomic bias – we have a chance to diversify and expand our industry’s future workforce!”

Funding still remains to equip another dozen elementary and middle schools with the Infento Pro Kits, but Wicklund hopes to expand the program even further through support from automotive and collision shops. Shop Safety Inspections

Vehicle Lifts A 37-year-old Illinois mechanic died two days before this past Thanksgiving, when a car fell off a lift and crushed him. Did he not position the car correctly? He was an experienced mechanic. Did the lift fail?

We don’t know. But chances are good that this small shop never knew to inspect their lifts.

Check your lifts each month. Are the anchor bolts secure? Look for any evidence of fluid leaks. Do the controls work correctly? Make sure there is room to work around the lift – no trip hazards, good housekeeping. Check that the floor around the posts is in good condition. Most critical: make sure the lift stays up when raised, that the mechanical safety locks engage, and that it raises and lowers smoothly and evenly.

Get a qualified outside company to give your lifts a detailed inspection each year. They can make sure the cables and chains are correctly adjusted, the anchor bolts are torqued correctly, and the columns are

plumb. They can also handle needed preventive maintenance, such as lubricating chains.

Are you preventing fires?

What could cause a fire in your shop? Flammable liquids and aerosol cans. Welding and torch use. Damaged or overloaded electrical wiring.

Each month, verify that you’re taking these fire prevention measures.

Make sure drums of flammable liquids such as brake cleaner and lacquer thinner are grounded. Do that for hazardous waste from those too.

Are they kept tightly closed? Don’t forget about grounding gasoline caddies if you need to transfer gasoline.

Where are you storing your flammable liquids and aerosol cans?

If you don’t have a mixing room designed for flammable material storage, consider getting flammable cabinets. Limit how many aerosol cans you have. Store these and other flammable materials where a welding spark won’t hit them and where they won’t heat up.

Check your welding and cutting gases. Are they securely stored with safety caps in place? If they have gauges attached, was the pressure bled off? Where are you storing spare oxygen cylinders? They need to be at least 20 feet from acetylene, oils, or anything else that burns easily.

Look at electrical cords. If you find electrical tape on a cord, chances are good that it’s covering up damage. It isn’t a repair because it doesn’t have the same insulating ability as the original jacket. Are any plugs missing grounding pins? Pulling away from the cord jacket? Damaged cords can shock or start fires. Remove or repair them.

Trace extension cords that disappear from view. Extension cords are not meant for permanent use because they are easily damaged.

That’s especially a problem when cords go up through ceilings or through walls. If you find those, remove them.

Look for power strips plugged into power strips. One power strip, plugged into a wall outlet, works well

for battery chargers and computers.

But daisy-chaining them or using them for things that heat up and draw a lot of power can overload them. You may need to get an electrician to put in new outlets, but that’s a lot cheaper than repairing fire damage.

Are you ready for a fire?

Your fire extinguishers need to be fully charged, easy to find and easy to reach. Are they? If your employees can get to the fire when it’s very small, there’s a good chance they can put it out before it becomes a disaster.

If a fire does occur, people need to be able to escape quickly. Would your exits be easy to find in a smoke-filled shop? Check that illuminated exit signs and emergency lights work – their batteries don’t last forever. Make sure all exit doors are unlocked from the inside and provide safe passage away from the building.

The problems in the picture are: The eyewash doesn’t work (it’s turned on and the ball valve to it is open, but there’s no water). The water bottle in the eyewash isn’t a substitute for the eyewash; if the eyewash did work, the water bottle would be in the way.

And one of the protective caps over the nozzles is missing.

When you repair a vehicle, you know you need to give your customer a vehicle that’s safe to drive. As the November 2025 AASPMN News article, “What Lies Beneath: The Terrors of Not Performing Safety Inspections,” (see grecopublishing. com/aasp1125coverstory) pointed out, missing safety hazards during the repair process could have severe consequences.

What about safety hazards in your shop? Are you giving your employees a workplace that’s safe?

We often overlook the things we see each day. They haven’t caused harm so far – so maybe they never will. But some have the potential to cause severe injuries, even kill. Just like you can’t predict when one of your customers will need a functioning airbag, you can’t predict when your employees will need a safety device to save them. How do you make sure those work? The same way you ensure your customers’ safety – do routine inspections.

CCC: Filling and Bleeding Cooling Systems DEG Inquiry 40223 addresses feedback from MOTOR about operations that are NOT INCLUDED when filling and bleeding cooling systems.

According to the “Guide To Estimating: RADIATOR,” Drain, Check and Refill Fluids and Purge Air from System is listed as “Included.”

Please note: a. During the process of “Refill Fluids” and “Purge Air from System” the technician should “Visually Check” for leaks and “Cooling System Concerns.” b. Pressure Testing for Diagnosis of Cooling system is Not Included.Cooling System leak repair is Not Included. c. Running “clear water” through the cooling system would be associated with a system “flush” and would not be included. d. Are you ready for other emergencies?

When did you last run your eyewash? Do you have an eyewash? You should. Technically, eyewashes are only mandatory if employees use corrosive chemicals.

Practically, they can limit the eye damage incurred if any chemical or particle gets into an eye. But they are only useful if they work and employees can get to them quickly.

If you have a plumbed one, run it every week. Gravity fed?

Make sure you use a preservative and change the solution before it has expired. Check it each week to verify it is current, filled and accessible.

Take a look at your first aid kit, too. Some items, such as saline and triple antibiotic ointment, expire. You don’t want to be responsible for an eye infection caused by expired saline. And you don’t want to find out what’s missing only when you need that item.

Keep people from falling Is it easy to walk through your shop? Slips and falls usually don’t kill people, unless it’s from a height. But they can cause injuries ranging from minor sprains to traumatic brain injuries. How are your floors? Spalling or damaged concrete, holes and bumps can make people trip and fall.

So can cords and hoses strewn everywhere. Putting things away reduces tripping hazards. It also reduces damage to those cords and hoses. And it saves time, because people don’t have to hunt for things or spend time untangling.

Are your floors slippery? Wet? Do you need to look at anti-slip coatings, or just good squeegees?

Falls from ladders are usually caused by how people use ladders – standing on the top, reaching too far to one side or another, losing their balance. But ladders can fail.

Are yours in good condition? Can they support enough weight? Shops often have household stepstools, rated for only 200 pounds. Most adult men will exceed that, once clothing and tools are added. Each ladder should have a sticker giving its load limit. Check for those.
