A Woman’s Keeping Touch Is at Work at it real... Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Becca Bragg

emorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital works hard to reach women in the surrounding community and their families through coordinated, multidisciplinary care, with highly trained affiliated physicians and staff and the latest diagnostic and treatment options. We recently spoke with four women who perform executive roles at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land about the challenging task of leading and differentiating a top hospital in Fort Bend County and what it means to balance work, family and your health. The ladies sat down together and spoke from the heart about a woman’s touch at work at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land. Working as the hospital’s chief operating officer and raising her toddler son, Jai, gives Malisha Patel plenty of experience living out the changing roles of women. “The key is loving your work, loving your family, and remembering to breathe.” she says. “Everyone here deeply cares for the people we work with and the mission we serve.” With all of life’s shifts, working women need support that is both useful and meaningful. Leslie Norman, chief nursing officer, says, “At Memorial Hermann Sugar Land we consider the real-life situations that impact families. Recently, I made my own life shift moving from Louisiana to Texas. Being part of a family-like nurturing culture is extremely important to me. Fortunately, I have found a collaborative work environment with so many resources in place – both for me personally and for our patients.” Courtney Diepraam, the hospital’s director of business development, is also an avid softball mom and fan. “We are always on the go for our daughter Kennedy’s softball tournaments,” she says. “I love using that time to ‘lean-in’ and listen as young girls and their mothers are talking, in between cheering ourselves hoarse, naturally! Doing this keeps me focused on

When you love what you do, you want to share it with others.” That’s the driving force behind regular events like the hospital’s Girls’ Night Out, which focus specifically on women’s needs. Another example is the upcoming Care 2 Chat Conference in September at the University of Houston Sugar Land. This inspirational conference presented in partnership with Fort Bend Independent School District includes helpful information and insights on understanding and guiding children of all ages. “We believe that good health and good fun go handin-hand,” says Diepraam, “and we want to make sure what we offer to the community is relevant for your life.” “We all desire a brighter future for our children,” says Cheryl Bertrand, director of business development for Ambulatory

Surgery and Outpatient Imaging. “We were thrilled to collaborate with Memorial Hermann Sugar Land for our inaugural “Pink in the Park” event held in May at Constellation Field. The Sugar Land Skeeters were decked out in pink jerseys and breast cancer survivors were honored. The pink jerseys were auctioned off and raised $9,500 to support the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Breast Center expansion. We’re looking forward to next May.” said Bertrand, adding, “On a personal note, my daughter just graduated from high school, and I can’t help thinking that the more people we reach by providing these opportunities the more we could impact her and her friends in the future.” Memorial Hermann Sugar Land 281-725-5000 17500 West Grand Parkway, Sugar Land, Texas 774799 memorialhermann.org

Can You Say FUN?

hat’s on your list of fun things to do this summer? Maybe you’ll be swimming at the pool, vacationing with family, or catching a movie with friends. Kids and grownups all need a little rest, relaxation and recreation...but that’s not the only thing you may need. Dana and Jason Johnson say, “It can be hard to fit in even one more activity during the school year. Summer’s the perfect time to get speech therapy at a time that works for you. We promise that we founded Speech Therapy Unlimited to be effective...and fun!” If you’ve seen “My Fair Lady” you may think that speech therapy involves a lot of yelling and talking with marbles in your mouth. That couldn’t be farther from the truth! Jason says,

“Speech therapy may look like playing a video game on the iPad, planning a trip to the grocery store, blowing bubbles, or having an intense conversation. Your therapist will assess what you need to work on, commu but we never forget that communication should be something you enjoy. After all, the goal of speech therapy is to make it easier and more fun to talk with others!” You won’t see a class of thirty kids sitting at desks chanting in unison at Speech Therapy Unlimited. That isn’t their style and it isn’t their mis mission! Dana says, “I can’t tell you how many people assume we only work with people who struggle with articulation or fluency...like Elmer Fudd’s ‘wabbit’ or Piglet’s stutter. We also treat language, cognitive, developmental, and hearing disor disorders. We do accent reduction, work with patients with autism, and help those recovering from strokes. The reason we have so many different speech therapists here is that so many different kinds of people need a little help!” “Although we like to joke that we do have ways of making you talk,” says Jason, “speech therapy isn’t some-

thing we ‘do’ to you, We’re here to give you a road map, keep you company, and cheer you on!” Dana adds, “Our team works with parents and kids to give you the support you need and the fun you want!” When you think of the sounds of summer, don’t forget speech therapy. Call now and you’ll have a better chance of getting your prime time for appointments..and you’ll also get a jump start before the school rolls around again. You may say “Speech Therapy,” but at Speech Therapy Unlimited they just call it “fun!” Speech Therapy Unlimited, PLLC most major insurance accepted No Headaches, No Unreasonable Terms, Just Great Speech Therapists! 281-746-3053 12808 West Airport Blvd. Ste 332 Sugar Land, TX 77498 www.speechtherapyunlimited.com

huge number of Americans––more than 80 million––suffer from varicose or spider veins. Dr. Ulises Baltazar says, “Varicose veins affect an estimated forty percent of women and twenty-five percent of men. Now a new

laser therapy is giving patients great results quickly with no down time!” There are some things like a sense of humor, curly hair, or dimples we’re happy to have passed down through the generations...but nobody is thrilled to inherit a tendency towards varicose veins. You don’t have to settle for your grandmother’s varicose vein treatment! Dr. Baltazar says, “Step one in the treatment of varicose veins is and has been compression stockings. They may alleviate some of the symptoms of venous disease, but don’t directly treat its underlying cause. For years, the surgical option of ligation and vein stripping was the primary treatment for varicose veins...but not any more! At my office, we also offer a range of treament options including laser vein removal that’s done in-office and takes less than 30 minutes.” As seen on ABC Channel 13 news, one patient had her veins stripped ten years earlier. She found it painful and it took her six weeks to recover. Dr. Baltazar says, “The procedure works, but it has

It may be the look of varicose veins that keeps you from wearing shorts, but what’s happening inside those veins makes them a medical condition...and treatment may be covered by insurance. Dr. Baltazar says, “In varicose veins, your blood is defying gravity, flowing and pooling in the wrong direction. You may feel aching pain, swelling, burning, and heaviness... and if untreated your veins could lead to inflammation, blood clots, ankle sores or skin ulcers, and bleeding. Getting treatment will be good for the look of your legs, good for your self-esteem, and good for your health!” At a so-called “laser center,” you’ll be getting Ulises Baltazar MD, RVT, FACS a one-size-fitsSugar Land Vein Specialists all approach to treating your 281-240-8400 veins. THE REAL SIDE OF SURGERY

Linda’s story “I

Not only was Linda unhappy

with the look of her first procedure, she’d had other problems with her earlier procedure too. She says, “I’d had fluid build-up and some separation, so what might have been a fairly straightforward procedure for Dr. Ahmadi turned out to be a bigger deal...and there was no way to foresee that.

’m a sixty-year-old mother of three and I really wanted my pre-baby body back,” says Linda. “About two years ago I got a standard tummy tuck, but I wasn’t happy. My stomach was flat, but I was completely boxy, straight up and down on the sides with no waist. One morning I saw Dr. Ahmadi on a morning talk show talking about the Lipotuck™ procedure he’d perfected. He described the problems with a traditional tummy tuck to a ‘T.’ When he said the Lipotuck™ was designed to give more feminine curves, I knew I had to call him.” Not only was Linda unhappy with the look of her first procedure, she’d had other problems with her earlier procedure too. She says, “I’d had fluid buildup and some separation, so what might have been a fairly straightforward procedure for Dr. Ahmadi turned out to be a bigger deal...and there was no way to foresee that. He went over and above to correct my first procedure. Even though he essentially had to revise another doctor’s work before doing my Lipotuck, it was all still included in the original price.” “Before I ever went in for my procedure I had an extensive packet they’d prepared for me. I had all my medications filled and they’d not only put in a list of things that would make me more comfortable afterwards, they’d even included examples of the gauze pads in the correct sizes and which places carried them. My procedure went smoothly, I knew exactly what to expect, and there wasn’t a single thing I needed at home afterwards that I hadn’t already set up. I didn’t even have a single question that hadn’t been answered but I knew I could call any time and they’d be happy to talk with me. Best of all, I know that packet is only one example of Dr. Ahmadi’s incredible attention to detail. He’s a perfectionist...and that’s exactly the kind of doctor you want!” “When you arrive for your procedure, it’s as easy and pleasant as checking into a nice hotel. They greet you by name and take you right back. Everything’s ready for you and everyone at the office is so warm and friendly. From my initial visits through my procedure and my follow-ups, Dr. Ahmadi and everyone who works for him made me feel comfortable and valued. They’re wonderful people!” “The biggest difference with Dr. Ahmadi is the complete confidence he inspires. He radiates calm and you can feel it making you brave. There’s no way on earth I’d go anywhere else now...I just wish I’d come to Dr. Ahmadi in the first place! I truly believe it was divine fate that brought me to him. Plastic surgery is his specialty...and he’s perfected it. If Dr. Ahmadi could recognize and correct the problems I had, there isn’t anything he can’t handle. He’s an absolute artist...and now I love my curves!”

hat do a big ol’ Silverado truck, a sporty Camaro, and the cute-as-a-button Spark have in common? Aaron Strand, a new salesman at Classic Chevy, knows the answer...every single one of them is a Chevrolet! What do the owners of these three oh-so-different vehicles have in common? Their love for Classic Chevy in Sugar Land! Aaron says, “We want to give you the kind of friendly, fun experience that’ll win you over as a customer for life!” A new Camaro owner writes: “I have never had such a easy time buying a car. The experience was great, everyone from my salesman into financing took great care of me, and saw to it I got exactly what I wanted. No pressure or hassle. My salesman Kevin was so polite and patient. I knew I wanted a new Camaro, I just didn’t know which one. The selection of vehicles at Classic Chevrolet is enormous. I looked at practically every Camaro. I kid you not, Kevin let me walk and look at almost all of them and was right there by my side answering my every question. If I wanted to look inside or drive one, he had the keys immediately. I just can’t say enough to express my gratitude to him and everybody else there!” The new owners of a Silverado write:“My husband and I went there to look at the Silverado line, as we have been in dire need of a truck. We were met by Rogelio Rodriguez in the parking lot, who was extremely friendly and helpful. Mike Cottrell also stepped in to help, and was wonderful as well. They honored the Kelley Blue Book value and worked in

some additional cost breaks in order to make sure we were still coming out ahead at the end. There were no “pencil in some numbers, then go talk to the Tower” type of deals. They did not hold our keys or our licenses until we signed paperwork. It was very laid-back and they treated us with the utmost respect. This was the best car buying experience I have ever had!” A first-time car buyer (and new owner of a Spark) adds: “At other dealerships as soon as you get out of the car, the salesmen swoop in and you feel like a mouse in a field with no cover. This was my first new car and my first time buying a car...and I knew what I wanted and what I could afford! At Classic my salesperson did not try to talk me into a different car or sell me what she had on the lot. She went out of her way to get me the exact car I wanted. Mitch the finance manager took his time to explain EVERYTHING to me and didn’t mind all my questions. I left there feeling like I had just became a part of the family. I am the proudest new owner of a beautiful Jalapeno green 2013 Chevy Spark and I couldn’t be more pleased!!” No matter what your ride or your personality, you’ll find the style and the service you need at Classic Chevy!

uly! For baseball fans, it’s the All-Star break…and for those of us in Fort Bend County…it’s 95+ degrees Fahrenheit for the foreseeable future. Brian Jackson at Jackson Air and Heating right here in Sugar Land says, “With the high temperatures, your system needs to be running as efficiently as possible. If it’s not batting 1000, it’s time to get it serviced or retire it.” As Sugar Land’s “home team” for air conditioning since 1982, Brian and his dad, Johnny, learned early on that along with great service, they needed a great product…. so they teamed up with Trane out of Tyler, TX. “We know what you need to make it through the long hot humid Texas summers,” says Brian, “and Trane will get you there. We’ve been installing Trane systems in Fort Bend County for more than thirty years. If you need an energyefficient replacement, we’ve got all the bases covered. When you switch to a new high-efficiency Trane air conditioner, it’ll be more effective at controlling the heat and humidity.” But in 2013 it’s no longer just about cooling and heating…it’s also about energy efficiency and indoor air quality. That’s where the crews at Jackson Air are A/C AllStars. Installation is the most important part of a new sys-

tem, so Jackson Air never uses sub-contractors. Brian says, “Everyone at Jackson Air stays current on training and education so that you can reap the benefits of comfort and saving money. And our emphasis on comfort doesn’t stop at equipment…we aim to hit a grand slam with every customer, by providing honest, no pressure advice and we always following up to ensure complete satisfaction.” Jackson Air is EPA and NATE certified and Winner of the Better Business Bureau Award of Excellence for the past 3 years. See the Sugar Land Skeeters hit one out of the ballpark courtesy of Jackson Air. unglasses can give you Top Gun cool, Jackie O. glamour, or Lady Gaga’s rock star mojo...but going “incognito” isn’t the only reason to wear them. We asked Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source what to consider when choosing your sunglasses...and what makes them so important. UV rays can give you a sunburn even on a cloudy, hazy day...and they can damage the lens and cornea of your eyes too! UV radiation contributes to cataracts, macular degeneration, and other threats to your vision. Dr. Doan says, “Sunglasses also protect against basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma on your eyelids and the delicate skin around your eyes...and delay the formation of wrinkles and crow’s feet. UV damage is cumulative, so start your kids out in UV protective sunglasses...and wear them yourself whenever you’re outside!” The coating that blocks UV radiation is clear, so a darker lens isn’t necessarily more effective than a lighter one. Dr. Doan recommends, “Look for sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UV-A and UV-B

radiation, meet ANSI (American National Standards Institute.) Z80.3 blocking requirements, or offer UV 400 protection. Polarized sunglasses combat glare... great for driving, but not for reading your smartphone! And if you need a prescription or protective sports-eyewear, we can get those with UV protection and darkened lenses for you, too.” After you’ve found stylish frames that fit snugly and have UV-protection, double-check the quality of the lenses. Put the sunglasses on and focus on a vertical edge or line. ould you rather have floors that look fantastic for a few weeks, a dozen months, or fifteen years? Anybody—“Big Box Stores,” warehouses, even your uncle—can sell you some kind of flooring in a crate, but without good installation, you’re selling yourself short! After you’ve decided on lush carpet, gleaming tile or luscious hardwood floors, it’s time to get technical. You need the best installation and proper finish for floors that will go the distance, especially in our climate. Fort Bend families know they can trust the advice, the products, and the installation they receive through All About Carpet and Flooring. Proper installation is at least sixty percent of the equation whether you’re getting carpet, tile, or flooring. If it isn’t installed well, it won’t perform and won’t be eligible for warranty protection. Shaun McKelvey says, “When my dad was a flooring inspector, he once saw a wood floor installed without the proper allowance for expansion in the humidity...and it had pushed out the walls of the room! Our teams understand how flooring behaves in our area and they never cut corners. We’ve had the same tile guy for eight years, our wood installer for fifteen, and our carpet installer for fifteen. Our long-time family friend Damian shares his expertise in our showroom and out on jobs. Because we know we can trust the people we work

with, you know you can trust us.” Details like baseboards, corners, stairs, closets, and end moldings separate the amateur job from the professional. Custom-cutting pieces to fit all the unusual edges and angles of each room calls for equipment you probably don’t have lying around the garage. “It’s not only about aesthetics,” says Shaun. “Your flooring won’t hold up the way it should if it isn’t installed properly. Different materials perform differently, so we’ve got a tile crew, a carpet crew, and a crew for wood. Just like all our installers, our wood installers are certified and pride themselves on doing quality work…and we back all our installations with a warranty.” How important is proper installation? So important that your warranty depends on it. Renee McKelvey says, “Manufacturers know that the best carpet, tile, wood, or laminate can only perform as well as its installation. If you forget a step in the process, from removing previous flooring and prepping your surface, to any under-flooring needed, to assembling and laying your new flooring, you may find that amazing twenty-five-year warranty completely null and void! That’s why we use people who do the job right!” “Call us for cleanings, restoration or repair, and come see us anytime for the best in tiles, natural stone and granite as well as hardwood flooring, laminates

and carpet. You’ll get personal attention, design advice, an easy-to-understand quote, and installation you can trust! Whether you’re a repeat customer or a first-timer, we’re always happy to see you and promise to give you our best service on every job we do! As our customer you can consider yourself family.” All About Carpet and Floors 281-265-3700 3145 Highway 6 South (next to Shipley’s) www.allaboutcarpet.com

fter a hail storm blew through Fort Bend County, Richmond resident Michael Sturm knew what he needed to do. “I didn’t call the insurance company right away,” says Michael, “because they would send out an adjuster…and count the visit as a claim whether or not the roof was damaged. So I called Allegiance Roofing to come out and do their free inspection to check for damage first.”

Local homeowner and satisfied customer Mr. Michael Sturm

“You should be able to get peace of mind that your roof is stable after a storm,” says Allegiance Roofing owner Joe Rangel, “That’s why we offer free, noobligation inspections. Michael was smart to take advantage of the offer!” And the inspection did uncover hail damage on Michael’s roof. Michael says, “Once damage was found, Allegiance Roofing took care of everything. For starters, they came to the house to meet with the insurance adjuster and got up on the roof with him to point out the damage….so there was no question about the work that needed to be done.” Joe says, “We know what a hassle it can be to deal with the insurance company. That’s why our staff works with

your insurance company for you, so that your claim is handled quickly and effectively.” Of course, the insurance claim is just half the battle when getting a new roof. You should also expect quality workmanship. Michael says, “I had a roof replaced years ago. When they start to tear off the old roof, you wouldn’t believe the mess that is tossed from your rooftop…shingles, nails, tar paper. Joe’s crew brought along two employees whose sole job was to keep the mess picked up. At the end of every day, there was absolutely no trash around my house. Given my previous experience, I couldn’t believe it! They are also very mindful of the landscaping…covering shrubs and being careful not to throw anything down and break the plants….you don’t get that kind of attention to detail with just any roofing company!” Allegiance Roofing has extended roofing education and credentials behind their work…Joe’s entire team has passed the Certainteed Quality Master Exam and the Master Shingle Applicator Exam. Allegiance Roofing has achieved the elite certification of “Select Shingle Master Company.” Only 1% of roofing contractors within the United States are authorized by Certainteed to offer 3 STAR, 4 STAR, and 5 STAR extended warranties. With over fifty years of combined experience, Allegiance Roofing has built a reputation in the greater Houston area for solid work. Michael concurs, “After seeing my roof, several of my neighbors have asked who did the work for me. I always tell them to ‘Call Joe, cause he’ll do ya a great job!’” Allegiance Roofing • 281-232-9100 P.O. Box 2010 • Richmond, Texas 77406 www.allegianceroofing.com

Summertime and the Livin’ is... Messy! by Maggie Beil

S

ummer has finally arrived! It’s the season that your children have been waiting for all year. For the next few months the kids are going to be spending a lot more time

at home than usual, and we all know what that means... more mess! Luckily, Professional Maid Service is here to provide you with excellent house cleaning when you need it most. Although we would all like to keep our kids as active as possible during their summer break, we do live in Texas and smoldering hot summers are to be expected. No matter how hard they try to play outside they’ll need to beat the heat at some point, which will bring them back inside to the luxurious A/C. What is there to do on a hot summer day? Play dress up with mom’s clothes (which of course requires pulling every pair of high heels she owns out of her closet), build a fort out of sheets in the living room, or maybe maybe one afternoon they’ll decide to dump their whole toy box out on the living room floor... just for giggles! As much as we like to encourage our children’s imaginations, someone has to clean that mess up. Sticky popsicle drips, muddy bathrooms, and smudgy surfaces are no match for the Professionals. They’ll arrive in a company car, wearing uniforms, and ready to clean! “Take the kids to the pool or to a movie,” says the owner of Professional Maid Service, Max McCammond, “and leave the mess to us!” “We believe moms and dads deserve to enjoy a clean house,” says Max, “without any hassle at all! That’s why our team of trained professionals makes it possible for you to enjoy a little welldeserved peace. Call us today for your free in-home estimate...and leave the cleaning to the Professionals!” Professional Maid Service 281-342-6500 www.professionalmaidservice.com

Max’s Cleaning Tip: Mirrors get gunky faster in summer due to the high humidity. To clean your mirrors just mix one or two teaspoons of dish detergent in a large bucket of warm water and add four tablespoons of lemon to help cut through the dirt and deodorize, leaving you with a streak-free clean!

Next Stop...St. Michael’s! Safety Tips for Children

Tales from the ER

• Make sure your child’s safety seat and safety belt buckles aren’t too hot before securing your child in a safety restraint system, especially when your car has been parked in the heat. • Never leave your child unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows down. • Teach children not to play in, on, or around cars. • Always lock car doors and trunks-even at home-and keep keys out of children’s reach. • Always make sure all children have left the car when you reach your destination. • Don’t leave sleeping infants in the car ever.

verybody has a story: the ladder that slipped, the fever that spiked, the accident no one saw coming. What you don’t need in an emergency is a story about spending the night waiting to be seen in emergency room. Thanks to St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, these “Tales from the ER” all have happy endings! Imagine this: it’s late at night on Easter Sunday and you’re in terrible pain. Where do you go? One patient writes: “I went to St. Michael’s with painful kidney stones. The nurses were fantastic... making sure my pain was managed and that I was comfortable. The doctor was great at explaining to me what was going on and what my labs showed. He also provided me with copies for my doctor. It was Easter Sunday, so they gave me meds before I left so I wouldn’t have to find a 24 hour pharmacy at 10PM. They even called me the next day to see how I was feeling!”

Is your family enjoying an active summer? It only takes a second for a day of fun to turn into a story from the ER. Is your family enjoying an active summer? It only takes a second for a day of fun to turn into a story from the ER. One local woman writes, “We thought my husband broke his ankle on a Sunday afternoon at a swim meet. We took him straight to St. Michael’s. We were seen immediately, x-rays were taken and read very quickly. It ended up not being broken, but a bad sprain. They wrapped it up, gave him some pain meds, crutches and instructions on what he should do to heal and we were on our way home. It was a very fast and pleasant experience. We only paid our copay and insurance was billed for the rest. I would definitely go back in a second!!! Thank you, St. Michael’s!!!” St. Michael’s will give you any needed referrals to specialists and communicate with your doctor to make sure you get the best care. Think back to your last trip to the ER. Would you describe it as “Fantastic?” That’s

the way St. Michael’s stories always end! One patient writes, “Last month I had a very unexpected case of vertigo and my wife rushed me to St. Michael’s. The staff and doctors there had me checked in, completely evaluated (including a CT scan) and safely diagnosed in 45 minutes. I was properly evaluated and provided with an RX to correct the problem and safely on my way home within the hour. It was FANTASTIC!” St. Michael’s Emergency Room is not an urgent care center...it’s a full-fledged, free-standing Emergency Room with Board-Certified Physician and all the advantages of a “traditional ER.” St. Michael’s is the first and only free-standing emergency room in Fort Bend and the surrounding Houston area in-network with Aetna. We are working on similar contracts with other insurance companies and currently accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United & Humana. Recently expanded from 5,500 square feet to approximately 10,000 square feet, St. Michael’s offers nine exam rooms (including pediatric themed rooms and a Harley-Davidson room!), a treatment suite for observation, and a comfortable waiting room...with a limited wait time! St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms does not currently participate in any Medwicare or Medicaid programs.

Symptoms of sun poisoning and what to look for: The first step in treating sun poisoning is to recognize it. The symptoms are dizziness, nausea, vomiting, chills, headache, and sometimes swelling. In order to minimize the hot feeling and burning take a cool bath. You can also take a anti-inflammatory to reduce the swelling. Make sure you drink plenty of fluid because sun poisoning does dehydrate you.

Heat Safety Foods to eat or pack for the day: Healthy food, icy water and proper portions. Skip the bread sandwiches and go for things like: Watermelon: Growing up, Sunday dinner in the summer was 1/4 or 1/2 of a watermelon and a spoon. Smoothies: The ultimate vessel to deliver whatever nutrients (and hydration) you require to last you throughout the day Frozen Grapes: There is a cult following for this simple snack. Just toss any bunch of grapes straight in the freezer. Chilled Hard Boiled Eggs: They’re small, easy to consume and pack a punch of protein. Add a sprinkle of salt and you’re all set.

Which sunscreens to use and how often to apply The best type of sunscreen is the one you will use again and again. Just make sure it offers broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection, an SPF of 30 or greater, and is water resistant. The kind of sunscreen you choose is a matter of personal choice, and may vary depending on the area of the body to be protected. Available sunscreen options include lotions, creams, gels, ointments, wax sticks and sprays. Apply the sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes BEFORE going outdoors. Re-apply sunscreen approximately every two hours or after swimming or sweating heavily according to the directions on the bottle.

A common mistake people make while out in the heat: They wait too long to drink or drink only caffeinated beverages. Remember if you are thirsty, it’s already too late and you’re dehydrated...and caffeine (found in soda, tea, coffee, and “energy drinks”) makes the problem worse. To detect dehydration Check the veins around your wrist. Remember what size they are normally. If your veins are hard to find visibly through your skin you are probably severely dehydrated. If your veins are like strings of thread you must drink immediately. If your veins are puffy and full you are most likely well-hydrated. (Note: This applies if the fluid intake was water-based.)

Tip:

Sipping water all throughout the day ensures adequate hydration, yet won’t make you feel waterlogged.

ost everyone agrees that an attractive smile is important, but more than half of all adults are not happy with their smile. Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. of Stafford says, “Whether you are looking to straighten or brighten your smile, close a gap, or create a younger, natural, more attractive look, I’ve got solutions that are quicker and easier than you could imagine. A better smile will bring back that confident, sexy feeling and literally roll years off your look!” You know what isn’t sexy? That puckered, collapsed, pinched look around your mouth. Missing or gappy teeth aren’t good for your confidence or for your look. Dr. Lomonte says, “Dental implants address both the aesthetic issues associated with missing teeth as well as the dental health issues...making them a superior solution to the removable dentures and dental bridges of the past.” Maybe your teeth are just a little crooked? Dr. Lomonte says, “Invisalign is the clear way to straighten teeth. No more wires of the past, Invisalign is virtually invisible and removable, making it a convenient option to get the straight teeth you desire!” Can you imagine Justin Timberlake putting on his suit and tie and flashing you a smile full of yellow, crooked teeth? You can get your own sexy smile with Dr. Lomonte’s help. He says, “We offer a very effective whitening system that can improve your smile by leaps and bounds. If you want the effect of veneers but don’t want to the time, trouble, and expense, Snap-On Smile is a great option. If you’re feeling tired and achy or you’re living with a persistent case of the ‘blahs,’ it’s time to reclaim your freedom. “You should enjoy your life,” says Dr. Jeffery Alford of Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss. “As a physician, my goal is to get to the root of the things that are wearing you down, so you’re free to live life to the fullest!” Do your allergies keep you locked in the house away from the great outdoors? Bust out and enjoy your freedom with Adrops, a shot-free way to leave allergy symptoms in the dust! Dr. Alford says, “Recurrent headaches, fatigue, snoring, sinus infections, or ear infections may be the result of untreated allergies. Adrops build up a blocking antibody to make your immune system less sensitive to the allergen...and that reduces your symptoms! Just one or two drops under your tongue each day for two years will build up the good blocking antibody (IgG)...and it will remain in your immune system to fight those allergies for up to seven years! Our patients love that Adrops are needle-free and can be taken at home on their own schedule. Celebrate your freedom!” If you can’t remember what it felt like to wake up raring to go, don’t just write it off to “aging.” Dr. Alford says,
