Inspiration, Motivation, and Perspiration someone comfortable trying to communicate. Whether I’m talking sports with a senior who’s had a stroke or talking about BeyBlade with elementary school students, we’re working on recall, articulation, sequencing, or specific sounds.” “One of the first things I do with a patient is show them their goals. It’s important even for little kids to know what therapy is for, so they can take part in it. I’ve had older patients suffering from aphasia or apraxia who get so frustrated and depressed, feeling like they’ve lost the ability to communicate. I tell them, you can communicate...just not as well as you’d like to. Figuring out how to improve your speech is my job. Once they have hope that they’ll improve, I’ll motivate them to do the work and follow a plan. Dana and I both believe that speech therapy needs to deliver results.” You may see Jason and his patients looking a screen or “playing” with electronics. Don’t be fooled! Jason says, “iPads, Kindle Fires, and Smart Phones are all platforms for great speech therapy exercises. One of the best things about these tools is that whether my patient is six years old or eighty-six, it’s age-appropriate. Kids think technology is cool and adults don’t feel like it’s a childish way to build their skills.” “For Dana and I, running our business while raising three kids (ages one, two, and seven), keeps life exciting, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. I bring the same enthusiasm to my home life and my professional life. Speech therapy isn’t something I ‘do’ to people. They do the work, while I guide them and cheer them on!”

nspired by his grandfather, Jason Johnson originally went to school intending to be a physical therapist. He says, “When I was ready for a change, one of my professors at the University of Iowa suggested I consider the field of speech therapy...and I loved it! In a single field it combines science, counseling, therapy, and neurology. When I entered graduate school and began clinical work, I saw how the work Speech Therapists do really changes lives. That’s why wife Dana and I founded Speech Therapy Unlimited...we love the work we do!” Over and over Jason’s patients ask him, “When are you going to start the therapy?” That’s because the way he does it, therapy looks a lot like having fun and hanging out. ou don’t outgrow loving electronics, no matter how much the industry changes,” says Richard Machemehl. He should know! He and Scott Crain, co-owners of Home Theater Evolutions, have shared an obsession with electronics since the second grade. They started doing in-home custom installation of electronic equipment in 2003. Scott says, “We didn’t even work out of a van, just a four-door Saturn. As we expanded our business, more and more of our customers asked our advice on which products to purchase.” Richard adds, “We started offering electronics for sale in 2005 and then opened our first showroom back on Airline Blvd. Scott and I decided we’d always handpick every item for quality and value. Just like we always have, we include everything, even installation and programming, on the estimate...no hidden fees! We really want to help people decide on the right products for their home, their space, and their budget.” Today electronics are used for more than entertainment... they can be the best way to protect your family and your home.

The Savant control and automation system gives you total control through any Apple device...your iPhone, laptop, or the iPad controller. With one touch, you can control the lights, every television in your home, the temperature of your pool, the garage door, your music system...and your security system. More than just arming and disarming the alarm, you can keep an eye on your home and give it that “someone’s home” look, no matter where you are! From your office downtown, your vacation at the beach, or your trip overseas, you’ll be able to see you house and control who goes in and out. Need to let in a repairman or cleaning service? You can see them remotely through the Savant security cameras, open the garage door and disarm the alarm for them, watch them leave, and then reactivate everything. Remember those little “plug-in timers” that turned a single light on or off at a particular time of day? We hear those don’t fool anyone! Richard says, “The Savant system can ‘read’ your usual activity and play it, so lights come on and off in different rooms just as if you were home. With the security cameras, you can ‘see’ remotely if a package has arrived, if a tree branch has fallen, or if there’s anything at all you need to know.” Keeping things easy and affordable is the mission at Home Theater Evolutions...and that will never change! Scott says, “Everything on the Savant control and automation system— from the design of the docking system to the user-friendly interface—is designed to be intelligent, affordable, and extremely easy to use. We’ve got a demo station of the Savant system set up in the showroom for you to try. Drop by and see for yourself how easy and fun it can be to make your home safe and smart!” Home Theater Evolutions 281-980-2300 • 3157 Highway 6 at Williams Trace www.htevo.com

Sugar Land Vein Specialists had visitors from ABC13 recently as they ran a special segment on treatment of varicose veins

Ugly Veins…It’s Not Just Cosmetic Y Amy Sharp ou’ve put the summer clothes shopping on hold. You are just too self conscious about shorts and swimsuits and varicose veins. And now you’re thinking, “You know, my doctor did say laser vein removal is a piece of cake.” But did you know that varicose veins aren’t just a cosmetic problem? Vascular Surgeon Dr. Ulises Baltazar, MD says, “Varicose veins are a vascular health problem. When the valves in your veins are unhealthy, blood can then flow backward and pool inside the vein, so it swells...leading to venous diseases like spider veins, varicose veins and venous stasis ulcers. What may seem like a cosmetic problem can become extremely uncomfortable, painful and potentially dangerous if not treated by someone who understands the problem. Plus, if we can prove that the vein isn’t working properly, the treatment is generally covered by insurance!” When Dr. Baltazar did his General Residency at East Tennessee State University, varicose veins became his passion. Dr. Baltazar says, “I couldn’t resist the caliber of technology and precision used in vascular surgery. I went on to do my Vascular Surgery Residency at Baylor College of Medicine here in Houston.” While at Baylor, Dr. Baltazar served as Administrative Chief Resident and was awarded the Outstanding Resident in Vascular Surgery Award. He was one of the pioneers of endovascular surgery at East Tennessee State University, where he practiced before returning to Houston. Here in Texas, he performed the first case of Mechano-Chemical Ablation (MOCA). He’s had years of training, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the arteries and veins and extensive experience in placing needles, guide

wires, using lasers, ultrasound and the latest technology and techniques. Varicose veins increase your chance of blood clots in the superficial called thrombophlebitis and can be associated with potentially lethal clots in the deep system called deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Clearly not just a cosmetic problem…it’s easy to see how important it is to seek the expertise of a specialist! Dr. Baltazar has been board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery for over a decade. More than an expert in the treatment of varicose veins, Dr. Baltazar is also truly an expert in patient care. He has been voted by hospital staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital as “Most Supporting Physician” and he’s also won the “Patient’s Choice” award at Methodist. Dr. Baltazar says, “It’s not about the number of veins I treat, but about offering each and every patient the correct treatment and personal care.” Visit Dr. Baltazar’s website…you’ll find patient testimonials and see amazing before and after pictures of his treatment of varicose veins. And if your veins have you down…call the expert!

re you tired of looking in the mirror and not loving the “you” that’s looking back? Summer is the one time of year when it gets harder and harder to hide all those little trouble spots. Men and women are turning for help to the man who sets the gold standard for plastic surgery, Dr. Ahmadi. Like many of his clients, Dr. Ahmadi chose to raise his children in Sugar Land, since it’s one of our nation’s top-rated cities. He’s board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to provide all aspects of cosmetic surgery. Dr. Ahmadi has received world-recognition for his trademarked Lipotuck™ procedure, which combines the benefits of a tummy tuck and liposuction for naturally fit look. Dr. Ahmadi says, “Whether a patient starts at a size 2 or a size 16, the Lipotuck™ is completely-customized, so that each individual patient gets the very best results possible.” “I, the husband of one of your patients, want to thank you for the results of my wife’s surgery. Every morning my wife cried because she could not fit into her clothes, this in turn caused me to cry. The surgery not only stopped her crying but cut down on her laundry time because she no longer has to hide her perceived flaws under three layers of clothes. She wears her bathing suit and looks incredible, and she knows it. The surgery has totally changed her personality and has increased her confidence. Your staff is fantastic; they are friendly and very professional: from the surgical staff that delivered her to me after the surgery to the other ladies.Thank you

for giving my wife a new beginning: and thank you for giving me the additional costs of having to buy skinny clothes for my now-skinny wife!” Women aren’t the only ones who’d like a tighter, firmer stomach. Dr. Ahmadi says, “Many times after extreme weight loss and lifestyle change, men will find that even after the fat is gone, excess skin remains. Removing that skin and tightening the abdominal area will give you renewed confidence in the way you look. Once you feel better, you’ll be eager to commit to the healthy choices you’ve made for a lifetime! Moms and Dads both deserve to feel beautiful and vibrant again.” “This profession is my passion...the perfect way of combining science, surgery, and artistry. Getting to know my patients and seeing them blossom makes every day an incredible gift. If you’re not looking forward to summer because of the way you look, I hope you’ll give me a call. You deserve to love your life!”

Our Local Dream Team!

Sarah Warburton hat makes a winning team? Great coaches, skillful players, and supportive fans! That’s true for football and baseball teams...and it’s true for car dealerships. Don Kerstetter, owner of Classic Chevrolet in Sugar Land, says, “Four years ago, when we took over the dealership that stands at the corner of 59 and 90A, we changed the way the game is played. We pride ourselves on transparency, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. We’re not here to sell you just one car today…we want to be your home team for years to come!” Fair play and a good game plan have put the team at Classic Chevy at the top of their game. Don says, “General Motors has recognized Classic Chevy as a GM Dealer of the Year three years in a row...an honor only given to the top two percent of Chevrolet dealers in the region for excellence in customer service. GM Dealer of the Year is the highest honor GM bestows. Only 50 Chevy dealerships nationwide out of over 3000 received the award for 2011. This award means so much for the team because to win, a dealer must not only be a top performer in sales and customer satisfaction...but also show uncompromising dedication to their customers. That customer-centered philosophy is at the heart of everything we do. The strong team of amazing people we’ve assembled at Classic Chevy earned this award...and I’d like to thank each and every one of them!” How did Classic achieve so many goals? They started off strong with major changes to their buildings and surroundings to reflect the down-to-earth, open philosophy at Classic Chevy. We have the same high standards in every aspect of our business––new, pre-owned, on-site or internet sales, service, body shop, and financing. We pledge to keep our focus on you!”

Just like our community, St. Michael’s has been growing! Now Fort Bend’s favorite Emergency Room has expanded to offer more of everything...except the wait! On May 9 our community gathered to celebrate the Grand Expansion of the first free-standing emergency room in Fort Bend. Dr. Shannon Orsak says, “We’re excited to be growing from 5,500 square feet to approximately 10,000 square feet to meet your needs. We’ve added a HarleyDavidson room sponsored by Republic Harley-Davidson and updated all our equipment. In addition to our nine exam

At St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, you’ll get the advanced ER experience. Co-founded by brothers Brian and Shannon Orsak, this ER offers all the amenities of a traditional ER...without the wait! Throughout your visit you’ll enjoy quality treatment and services from our board-certified physicians and specialtytrained nurses.”

rooms, we’ll also have a treatment suite for observation with all the amenities of home. The better question is: WHY are you still waiting, when St. Michael’s is always waiting for you!

o you remember dial-up internet? You’d have to wait and wait to get a connection...and if your home phone rang, you’d have to start all over again. Now your kids can stream a movie from Netflix while you check your email. If you wanted to get to Europe, you used to to have to take a passenger ship. Now you can catch a flight at dinnertime and arrive in London in time for breakfast. Computers are faster, the internet is faster, travel is faster...so why aren’t your ER visits faster?

St. Michael’s Emergency Room is the first and only free-standing emergency room in Fort Bend and the surrounding Houston area in-network with Aetna. We are working on similar contracts with other insurance companies to make your life even easier. We accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United & Humana. s parents, we are blessed with a tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact on the future,” says local dentist, Dr. Thomas Lomonte, DDS. “I’ve always believed that the best thing we can do for the future of our planet is to spend time with our kids and teach them what we know. My father taught me to fish and I taught my son Matt…you can’t beat the quality of time when you’re out on the peaceful lake and it’s just you, your kid and a fishing pole.” Raising kids is certainly a labor of love. Most parents would do anything to see their kids into adulthood and experience the fruits of that labor. Taking care of missing teeth could actually extend your life and give you more time with your family. Did you think that when a tooth is gone the problem is gone? No more worries about that tooth giving you grief! But Dr. Lomonte says, “Actually, when you lose a tooth, it’s more than an aesthetic problem or a minor inconvenience for speaking and eating. Once bone and soft tissue aren’t necessary, they start to recede. Gum recession leads to gum disease, and gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, digestive problems, osteoporosis, and immune problems.” If you have a missing tooth, what’s the best solution? Dr. Lomonte says, “Consider dental implants! Dental implants provide a root to secure your jawbone and gum tissue, preventing gum recession from happening. With all

the associated risks, preventing gum disease can literally add years to your life…making implants a superior solution to the removable dentures and dental bridges of the past. They allow you to eat your favorite foods and chew normally, and they also address the aesthetic issues associated with missing teeth. Plus, implants provided a great deal of stability and security…no more embarrassing denture social situations!” Call Dr. Lomonte and set up a consultation today. Dr. Lomonte says, “I’m always happy to listen to your questions and fully explain all aspects of implants. As parents, we owe it to our kids to take care of our health… and it would be such a shame to miss out on their futures because of a silly missing tooth!” Thomas M. Lomonte, D.D.S. 12122 Murphy Rd. True Happiness is Priceless! by Amy Sharp

“W

hen I was six years old, I remember standing by my parents’ gate and feeling like a gray cloud was descending on me,” says local neuropsychiatrist Dr. William H. Reading. “I realized I was going to grow up and I was not happy about it.” Diagnosed with major depression decades later, Dr. Reading just assumed his feelings were normal. “I didn’t think it was possible to really be happy,” says Dr. Reading, “but I kept myself going, thinking that I’d be happy when I finished high school. Then it was college, medical school, residency, wife, home, kids, my own practice…finally I had exhausted my list.” Dr. Reading settled into the life he then assumed he would lead, pretending to be happy. Eight years into his marriage he was still struggling. Finally, his wife suggested the psychiatrist see a psychiatrist. First diagnosed with ADD, Dr. Reading was semi-successfully treated with a stimulant. His doctor suggested he add an antidepressant. Dr. Reading recalls, “Depression isn’t always ‘sadness.’ I felt an underlying unhappiness, irritability and pessimism. As a professional, I knew the signs of depression, but when I was experiencing them, I was doubtful anything would help me.” Dr. Reading heard about the success of a particular medication for kids who have ADD, so he decided to go ahead with that treatment. “Five days after taking the new medication, I woke up with a strange feeling. Happy. I didn’t want to go to sleep that night,” says Dr. Reading. “I didn’t know why I was given this one wonderful day and I didn’t want it to end. Then it hit me, that this medication for ADD also had anti-depressant effects. I really had been living with severe depression since I was six years old.” That moment was life-changing. Psychiatry was no longer Dr. Reading’s career, it was his mission. Today with more than 20 years experience, serving on the Advisory Board of Mental Health America of Fort Bend County, and driven by his own struggles, Dr. Reading says, “I wanted to relate to others this new incredible feeling…the feeling that there really is a difference between living life and just trudging through. What I experienced was priceless!”

Now there’s an even newer treatment for major depression. In addition to traditional psychiatric care, Dr. Reading together with his wife Teresa provide cutting-edge NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment right here in Fort Bend County. Teresa says, “NeuroStar TMS is the only FDA-approved nondrug, non-invasive treatment for major depression. The electromagnet used in TMS creates electric currents that stimulate nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression to improve your outlook from the inside out. If Dr. Reading determines you are a candidate, we work as a team. As a registered nurse, I’ll deliver all of the TMS treatments personally on-site.” If you or someone you know could use Dr. Reading’s help, call today. New patients are generally seen within 24 hours. Dr. Reading says, “I used to think ‘stop and smell the roses’ was silly…but now I can relate. True happiness is priceless!” William H. He says, “My daughters––Danielle, Nikki, and Chrissy––are the lights of my life and I never forget the importance of family. I pledge to care for my patients and their families as I do for my own!” Dads, it takes a lot of energy to keep up with the kids. If your “get up and go” has got up and went, come see Dr. Alford at Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss. He says, “When patients come in telling me they’ve got no energy, they can’t seem to lose weight, and they just don’t feel like themselves, I pay attention. Ignoring symptoms because you believe they’re just due to “stress” or “aging” is a mistake! Dr. Alford says, “I’d like to ask all the women out there to help the men you love––husbands, sons, brothers, fathers, or uncles––look after themselves. Getting the right diagnosis is the first step to feeling better. If the problem is something like low testosterone, it’s easily treatable. former surveyor, I used to inspect nurs nursing homes, and I formed some strong opinions about the way things ought to be. Bobby and I created Chelsea Gardens to be a beautiful, enjoyable way for patients to get the rehabilitation therapy they need with the dignity and respect they deserve!” When your loved one needs to recov recover from surgery or an injury, why shouldn’t they enjoy their therapy program in a boutique, luxury environment? Director of Operations, Denise Martin, says, “We put the therapy room right by the entrance, to emphasize how important it is to our mission. Even if your therapy itself is challenging, we’ll give you caring support in a pleasant setting. Through Trinity Rehabilitation, our empathetic, experienced Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapists will help you build the strength and skill to transition back home. Until that happens, we want Chelsea Gardens to feel like a home away from home!” At Chelsea Gardens you’ll enjoy a choice of meals prepared and served on china by Chef Bill, private rooms (each with its own private bathroom and shower), a welcoming activities program, and soothing, spa-like surroundings. In addition to round-the-clock nursing care, on-site therapy services, and sixty beds (including six Medicaid beds), you may also enjoy special events like the appearance of “Elvis” at the Grand Opening celebration. David also invited residents from a nearby senior center to enjoy the serenade and party food! He says, “Good friends and good times can go hand-in-hand with effective therapy and skilled nursing. our feet have a tough job. Imagine carrying around a person that is the same size as you...that’s exactly what you ask your feet to do every day! They also help you perform more rigorous activities such as running, dancing, or playing a sport. When pain slows you down, make your first stop Dr. Vargas at Foot & Ankle Associates. He says, “Just as advances have made knee surgeries less invasive with less recovery time, new technology has made correcting common foot problems much quicker and easier. If you’ve got foot or ankle pain, come see me!” Helping moms and dads, students, weekend warriors and Olympic level athletes means staying ahead of the curve. Dr. Vargas is one of only two doctors in the Houston area certified to perform HyPro Cure. “The HyPro Cure is a stent that is placed in the foot, like an ‘implantable orthotic’, to help improve foot biomechanics and eliminate the need for orthotics,” Dr. Vargas says. Effective for patients of all activity levels, this procedure eliminates the hassle of bulky orthotic inserts and gives you the stride you always wanted for life.

If you’re on the run, you can’t afford to let bunion surgery knock you off your feet. At Foot & Ankle Associates, Dr. Vargas offers the tightrope bunionectomy, a less-invasive, just-as-effective alternative to traditional bunion surgery. “Instead of cutting down the bone to remove a bunion, we use X-ray guidance and thin, extremely strong sutures to create a ‘tightrope’ between your first and second toe to correct the alignment,” Dr. Vargas says. “You’ll be back on your feet right away and back to your normal activities quickly.” Whether you picked up a nail fungus from a locker room, shower stall, or for other reasons, new laser technology can zap it quickly. This procedure is painless and fast...it only takes fifteen minutes! Dr. Vargas is an efficient doctor who does whatever he can to keep his treatments stress free and quick. isorders like rheumatoid arthritis that cause pain and inflammation in the tissues and joints can be difficult to diagnose,” says Dr. J. Edward Hernandez, M.D. at Fort Bend Rheumatology Associates. “In our office, Dr. Ryan Valicek and I use ultrasound as a diagnostic tool the way stethoscopes are used by cardiologists. It’s more sensitive than x-rays, more flexible and quicker than an MRI, and allows us to see signs of inflammation or damage in the joints. In addition to its use for RA, it’s also becoming the gold standard in assessing cases of carpal tunnel syndrome as well.” We all have different thresholds for pain, but

with an ultrasound, Dr. Hernandez can assess the actual destruction of the joint. He says, “We always take patients’ pain seriously and work to relieve it, but with the ultrasound, we can see what the disease is doing to the joint. If we see evidence of erosion caused by rheumatoid arthritis rather than wear and tear, we may pursue a more aggressive treatment earlier or decide against a reduction in medication. We can also monitor the progression of the disease in order to direct the course of treatment, predict flare-ups and see active inflammation. I especially appreciate the ability to assess patients at their chairside or bedside, as many of my patients have mobility issues. Your comfort and health are my top priorities.” With an MRI, erosion from arthritis is visible two years before it can be picked up by an x-ray. Dr. Hernandez says, “Dr. Valicek and I always try to put our patients completely at ease. We offer an extremity MRI in our office for those who need only their hands, wrists, feet, ankles, or elbows to be scanned. This MRI allows you to sit comfortably next to the machine with the part of body to be scanned safely placed inside the machine....no full-body machine to climb into or to make you feel claustrophobic.” “There are no hard and fast rules or simple

checklists for treating autoimmune disorders,” says Dr. Hernandez, M.D., “but I promise to spend the time it takes to get to the root of the problem.”

resh gulf coast seafood and a warm casual family atmosphere… that’s what you’ll find at Pier 36 Restaurant and Oyster Bar on Hwy 90A in Richmond. Pier 36. What’s the secret? The people behind the Pier! Some might remember the small but popular Pier 36 on Hwy 36 in Needville. Jimmy Cantu and his parents opened that location back in 1997. A graduate of the University of Houston College of Restaurant Management, Jimmy says, “We oper operated a restaurant when I was a kid and I really had the bug. I worked at several restaurants during and after college…working through the ranks as a waiter, bartender, and manager. When we opened the res restaurant in Needville, we chose seafood and used many, many family recipes to put together the menu.” And the restaurant boomed. People came to Needville for the fresh seafood…shrimp, red snapper and flounder straight from the Gulf, local farm raised domestic catfish and oysters from the Texas and Louisiana coast. Now in their bigger location in Richmond, the Cantu family continues to feed that same fresh

seafood to their family and friends. Jimmy says, “My parents officially retired from the restaurant, but that doesn’t stop my mom…she can’t stay away. My sister’s background is graphic design and she does all of the menus and promotional work for us. I’m very fortunate to get to work with and take care of my immediate and extended community family. My wife and I both grew up in Richmond/Rosenberg and we love having the restaurant so close to home…it really allows for a lot of community involvement!” Jimmy is an active member of St. Laurence Catholic Church, the Richmond Rotary Club and the Lamar Education Award Foundation. And his daughter keeps him on the run! “Come join the family,” says Jimmy, “and enjoy some fresh gulf coast seafood...except on Sundays when the restaurant is closed. hen you see a drip or a leak, don’t hand Dad the toolbox and ask him to get to work. Just because the man’s a math whiz or a football star, doesn’t mean he’s got the know-how to fix your plumbing problems. If he’s smart, it won’t take long to realize he’s in over his head. Instead of throwing dad into the deep end, reach for the wrench to turn off the water…then reach for the phone and call Alan’s Plumbing. Keeping your head above water in this tricky financial times starts with making smart decisions. As a family-owned and operated company, Alan’s Plumbing keeps their overhead low and passes those savings onto you. They won’t feed you some line to get through your front door or make big promises with no followthrough. They’ll give you their undivided attention and excellent work so every penny counts. Alan’s taught his sons to earn your business the old-fashioned way...by giving the best price on the good work they do.

Trusting the wrong company can get you into hot water...that’s why Fort Bend families turn to Alan’s Plumbing. This isn’t one of those “who-knows-who-owns-it” com-

panies that’ll send some stranger to your house. Alan’s sons Beau, Luke and Jake have been riding the truck and doing the dirty jobs with their Dad and uncles since they were only eight or nine. Alan’s brothers and their fellow plumber Zach work together as a team, and Alan’s mother or his wife Jennifer will answer the phone when you call. Can you afford to spend money like water? If you’ve got dripping faucets or running toilets, that’s exactly what you’re doing. A worn out toilet flapper can cost you $50-$200 a month in wasted water and a leaky faucet can cost from $10 to $100 each month in wasted water. If you’re a fish out of water when it comes to fixing leaks, it’s time to call in the calvary...the team from Alan’s Plumbing. Ready to save some money, time, and trouble? Dads, keep the number for Alan’s Plumbing in your wallet, and earn a reputation as “Mr. Fix-It”…with a single call. Alan’s Plumbing • 281-261-1064

How Many Pairs Do YOU Own?

D

ress shoes, beach shoes, run running shoes, casual shoes, heels, flats, slingbacks, sandals...even if you’re not a total shoe-a-holic, you’ve got to have more than one pair. Even the most minimalistic man has at least three pairs of shoes. Now ask yourself...how many pairs of glasses do you own? Don’t your eyes do as many different activities as your feet? “Choosing more than one pair of glasses is about more than changing your look,” says Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source. “Different lenses protect your vision and make it easier to do the things you love!” No matter who you are, you need good sunglasses for driving, for running or playing sports, and a pair for the beach or pool. What makes sunglasses “good?” Dr. Doan says, “Look for sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Frequent drivers may choose lenses that are also polarized to eliminate light that distorts vision. And if you

need a prescription or protective impact-resistant sports-eyewear, we can get those with UV protection and darkened lenses too.” Do you spend long hours on the laptop or pour over fine print,? Dr. Doan says, “Heavy computer use or close work stresses your eyes and can give you tension headaches. We have glasses specifically designed to reduce eye strain from Computer Vision Syndrome.” Why do celebrities like George Clooney, Steve Martin, and Jamie Foxx use reading glasses while reading scripts or contracts? “Many people develop presbyopia in their forties or later,” says Dr. Doan. “Then it becomes harder to focus clearly on objects that are close. If you don’t want bifocals, progressive lenses, or reading glasses, multifocal contacts lenses might work too.” You don’t wear the same shoes for “serious business,” “outdoor fun,” “time with the kids,” and “a night on the town,” so why are you trying to make one pair of glasses fit every look? Dr. Doan says, “Choose the right lens for each activity and the right frame for each occasion. Come in for your annual eye exam, and see how glasses can express your personality...while helping protect your eyes. That’s stylish and smart!” Dr. Anh Doan, O.D. Beverly’s Secret... Becca Bragg ’m always looking for a different kind of facial, one that’s relaxing and rejuvenating. This search for beauty and bliss brought me to Beverly Wilson, a skin care professional for over thirty years. She says, “Formerly I worked with another company’s pineapple-based enzyme, but I had some concerns with the product. I worked with a chemist here in Houston to develop the enzyme I’d always wanted, one based on aloe vera. Now I’m happy to offer my services at Be’ Be’ Visage’!” Ready for your facial? Watch the trees toss their branches outside the window and relax as Beverly goes through her special ten-step process. She’s carefully designed the facial to stimulate collagen production, heal blemishes, soothe your skin, brighten your complexion and target lines, dryness, rosacea, loss of elasticity and dullness. She’ll start by using her enzyme to remove the dead skin on your face, so the following steps will be even more effective. Think about how much money you spend on face creams that are only moisturizing those layers of dead skin! She says, “This enzyme’s so gentle, that I actually sent the residue after a facial to a pathologist for testing. Now I have scientific proof that it removes the top layers of dead skin...so we can uncover your best self!” After one of Beverly’s treatments, your skin won’t have that “I just had a facial” redness or irritation...just a clear, luminous glow. The magic combination is her original enzyme plus LED lights. She says, “An LED facial is a gentle, effective way to help the product penetrate deeper into

the layers of the skin to rejuvenate, repair, replenish, regenerate, and heal your cells. Different colors provide different benefits, so we might use red lights for anti-aging, orange for pigmentation, blue for acne, purple for scarring”. You can visit her website for complete details. I remember a toning micro-current, a soothing mask, and something that smelled of lemongrass, but the entire process was so soothing and Beverly was so gentle that it almost seemed like a dream. Luckily, I’ve got proof it really happened...the way I look in the mirror, the way my makeup went on smoothly the next day, and the number of times people said, “You look great! What’s your secret?” Be’ Be’ Visage’ Facial Clinic 281-969-8266 2711 Cartwright Rd. Missouri City, TX 77459 www.bebevisage.com

A Family Tree with Deep Roots

Becca Bragg

B

randon and Nicholas Simpson of Simpson’s Tree Service have never had another job, even in high school. It’s always been about trees for them. Their mom Cammy says, “Trees have always been just something we live. In fact, my youngest shocked me a while back by getting a tree tattooed on his arm...but I guess I should have seen that coming!” Thinning, shaping, or trimming a tree can be as sensitive as performing surgery. Hack off too much and your tree could be permanently damaged, take off too little and you’ll leave dead or dying branches and the tree won’t get the best air and sunlight. Simpsons Tree Service can give your trees the look you want...without sacrificing their health or your safety! Trimming a tree or removing one is dangerous...that’s why local families have been calling Simpson’s Tree Services for over fifteen years. Brandon says, “People can be killed by a falling limb or injured by a chainsaw. We use safety equipment to get up into the trees and to lower branches to the ground. Our team is insured...and highly experienced. None of our guys have been with the company for less than eight years and several have been with us for fifteen years. Our customers love knowing that they’ll see the same faces year after year whether we’re doing an annual trim or major removal. We make sure things are done right the first time and leave each site as clean as when we pulled up!”

Why trim your trees? Protecting your roof from storm damage is only the first reason! Nicholas explains, “Hurricane season is here, so it’s the right time to get hanging branches trimmed and dead ones removed...but it doesn’t take a hurricane for an overhanging branch to damage your property. They also make it easier for animals like rats, possums, and squirrels to get on your roof and into your attic. Branches that are hanging out over your lawn block sunlight from getting to your grass and flowerbeds. The plants just thin out and eventually disappear. And bats, rats, or snakes could be living in the dead parts of your palm trees. We’ll handle all those things!” When quality, safety, and experience count...call Simpson’s for trimming, cutting, and removal services. here’s an expression, “Man plans and God laughs.” That sounds like what happened when Emily Bruce moved to the Fort Bend County area in 1999 with her husband Brock and their 2 year old and 6 month old daughters. A job transfer brought Brock back to his hometown and Emily agreed to the move...for a few years. A few years turned into a lifetime, as the Bruce family has grown and flourished here. They now have four daughters: Bailee, Blaire, Bradie, and Blaine; fondly called the “B Girls.” All four of these young ladies are making their mark in either competitive softball, FFA, or both. With strong roots in a community they love, Brock and Emily looked for a business opportunity that would provide a needed service and make a difference. By opening the first PROSHRED Security office in the state of Texas, they are able to do both. PROSHRED of Houston provides the most up to date, secure, on-site document shredding technology and recycling ser vices available in America. They specialize in On-Site Document Destruction, Paper Shredding Ser vices, Har d Drive Destruction Services, Obsolete

Product Destruction and Recycling. Whether at home or your business, PROSHRED of Houston helps Fort Bend and the Houston Metro area fight identity theft and stay safe, green and secure. If you contract with PROSHRED for your ongoing office service you will know exactly what you are doing to reduce your carbon footprint because at the end of each year you are presented with an annual TreeSaver Environmental Certificate indicating the total number of mature trees you saved during the year through their secure recycling process. For 25 years PROSHRED Security has pioneered the most secure and effective system for the shredding of confidential documents and the destruction of sensitive material, earning certification from both ISO 9001 and NAID AAA. Just like their trips to Mexico, Lupita’s res restaurant is a labor of love for the Garcias. Lupe’s been cooking professionally for over thirty years, but she learned her recipes from her family. Her fajitas are made with a secret blend of spices, hand-made tortillas, and spices freshly-ground with a Molcajete Mexican mortar and pestle. Jaime says, “Our seafood is fresh, we use the best meats and vegetables, and Lupe often offers up special choices in the restaurant or on our website. You should be able to eat delicious food made with fresh ingredients at a price you can afford. That’s our promise to you!” Want to make a splash this summer? Just Like Grandma Used to Make! Sarah Warburton y Sicilian grandmother Mama Lomonte’s recipes from her home in Licata, Sicily inspired my family to open the first Lomonte’s Italian Restaurant in Houston in 1986,” says Braden Lomonte. “Over six years ago, Jason Tatlonghari and I opened our location here to be Fort Bend’s neighborhood Italian place. My family came to Houston by way of St. Louis, and Jason grew up right here in Fort Bend...he attended Stephen F. Austin High School. We welcome you, your friends and family, to hangout and enjoy traditional Southern Italian meals served with a smile.” The magic combination of delicious homecooked food in a cozy atmosphere proved so successful that Lomonte’s expanded its dining room and bar area three years ago. Families, book groups, work buddies, friends and neighbors all gather for dinner at Lomonte’s. What should you order? Start with Lomonte’s famous house salad (Braden says this one is “St. Louisstyle) tossed Romaine and Iceberg lettuce with artichoke hearts and hearts of palm. Then choose from menu favorites like Fettuccine

And if you’d been looking for a REAL deep-dish pizza, MaMa Lomonte’s Sicilian Deep Dish features caramelized onions, mushrooms, Italian sausage in a mouthwatering combination. Braden says, “If you want our real Southern Italian food in the comfort of your own home, we offer our full-scale menu for takeout and delivery orders (call for delivery area). It’s a great way to get pizza to please the kids and an entree for mom and dad.” “We’re a neighborhood restaurant,” says Braden “so supporting the community is a huge part of our lives. We have a book club that comes in once a month for their meeting (and wine!), families who celebrate every occasion here, and a great

No Tears, No Fears...Just Smiles! A

Sarah Warburton re you a little nervous about going to the dentist? Maybe it’s your kids that freak out at the thought...and that’s stressful for parents, too. Maybe it’s time to consider a kinder, gentler dental office. Dr. Danny Nguyen of EcoDental says, “At our office caring for the planet goes hand-in-hand with caring for you and your family. That’s why we use eco-friendly products and created an office with little bonuses like free wi-fi, a Playstation, and massaging dental chairs. If you’re worried about your visit, please let us know. We promise to be as gentle with our patients as we are on the planet!” One patient, a self-described “wimp,” appreciated the soothing atmosphere and flexible hours at EcoDental. Another patient says, “Before I went to EcoDental, I would rather have gone through natural childbirth again than have any dental work done! Dr. Nguyen is the best doctor I’ve ever seen— capable, empathetic, and gentle. Now I’m eager to get the rest of my dental work done!” A third patient called EcoDental, “the best dental experience of my life.” How much does Dr. Nguyen care about your experience? He says, “Before I offered the Kör Whitening Deep Bleaching System to my patients, I tried it on myself. I can’t stand behind a procedure that isn’t comfortable and effective. That’s why I

know that the Kör whitening gel usually produces little to no sensitivity and delivers a smile that’s up to sixteen shades whiter. I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I heard about a whitening gel that’s permanently effective (with easy at-home maintenance) and isn’t harsh like some other whitening methods. Once I tried it myself, I was a believer!” “No Tears, No Fears” is the bottom line at EcoDental. Dr Nguyen says, “We’ve incorporated advances like digital x-rays that reduce films and processing chemicals, while making our patients more comfort comfortable than ever. We also accept all major insurances including Medicaid and CHIP, offer interest-free financing through Care Credit, and provide treatment in English, Vietnamese and Spanish. No matter what your concerns, we commit to providing dental care that’s empathetic and excellent. You and your family deserve a happy, healthy smile!”

The Right Technology Amy Sharp

e help you work smarter, not harder,” says Jake Messinger, President and Founder of Adjecta Technologies. “I’ve been supporting data-communications for big corporations worldwide for more than thirty years. Now it’s time to share my talents with the local community where I grew up.” “The real value of information is bringing the sender and receiver closer together,” says Jake. “Technology lets an engineer in Houston video-chat in real-time with a factory manager in China, just as if they were in the same room. Or imagine if your customer calls could be quickly routed to the right employee based on caller id, with the call recorded and tracked.” Jake says, “Adjecta Technologies can effectively give this ability to any size business.” Jake explains that unfortunately getting ‘saddled’ with the wrong technology is one of the biggest frustrations for small businesses and they often give up on the technology altogether. “I help companies choose the right technology that works for

them. My 30+ years of programming, consulting and teaching experience helps me to do things like customize a ‘VoIP’ (Voice over IP) application for your business, making the small office appear just as ‘professional’ as the big guys. We can put your entire enterprise ‘in the ‘cloud’…and we have the expertise to do it safely and securely with 100% uptime.” “We also put out a lot of fires,” Jake says. “Many of our new clients come to us because something has broken and they need ‘experts’ to get them back up NOW! I know that when your network is down, you’re out of business! We can get you back up quickly the same day. My philosophy is to treat all my clients as if they are my only concern.” An alum and former Adjunct Professor of Information Systems and Networking at the University of Houston, Jake and his fiancé, Sugar Land City Councilwoman Amy Mitchell enjoy volunteering at local charity events. When he grew up, would he have to settle for pushing those toys around the carpet with his own kids? Not Chance! Today we’ve got three locations, a skilled, creative team, and a loyal following. My biggest support has always been my wife, Laura...she stood by me as we build a life out of playing with trucks.” For over twenty years, the team at All Out Offroad’s locations in Richmond, Stafford, and now Pearland has rebuilt vintage models and tricked out newer cars, trucks, jeeps, and SUV’s with the latest and greatest accessories. Their skills with lift and lowering kits, tires, performance boosters, hitches, bed covers, window tint, audio, alarms, maintenance and more were put to the test on the hit CMT show “Trick My What?!”

If these guys can turn asphalt rollers, logging skidders, and shrimp boats into a “Dragon of Steel” or “Futuristic Steam Engine” so hardworking Americans can get their jobs done spreading asphalt, logging, or planting crops. ...imagine how they can make your everyday vehicle more efficient, practical, and straight-up awesome! Who says you have to grow up and leave your toys behind? The All Out Team never did! Chance says, “We all started out as kids who love trucks...we just never grew up! All our guys love talking about the ways you can accessorize your car, truck, or SUV. If Dad drives it, we can trick it out…and service it, too!” All Out Offroad 1 (home of the Lonestar Speed Shop) 281-341-9494 708 Hwy 90A Richmond, TX. 77406 All Out Offroad 2 281-499-3806 13261 Murphy Rd.
