hen you make your entrance into the redesigned showroom at Home Theater Evolutions, you’ll get star treatment every time. No more wandering around big box stores trying to find someone to help you, no more puzzling over the difference between one speaker and the next, no more hidden fees or add-ons that you weren’t expecting. Richard Machemehl and Scott Crain founded Home Theater Evolutions because they love electronics, plain and simple. Richard says, “Our team has the knowledge to advise you on what products will best fit your specific needs. Come talk with us, and we’ll offer well designed solutions at a variety of price points to help you get the best quality electronics for your budget!” Set the scene in the conference room. Scott says, “The Savant Home automation system makes coordinating televisions, music, security systems, lighting and security easy and completely stress-free. The entire thing’s controlled from the system’s iPad. We’ve set up two televisions to demo how easy video-switching can be. We’ll also have choice of window shades by Lutron which can be controlled through your iPad as well.” Want complete directorial control? Visit the Universal Remote demo area and see the way one universal remote can eliminate the need for seven or more individual ones. Richard

says, “In this area we’ve got a URC (Universal Remote Control) set up. It’s a great entrylevel system that automates lighting, security, and surround sound at an affordable price and also uses your ipad. Before you leave this area, try out the Apple TV, too!” Lights, camera, action...at home! Demo rooms showcase packages that bring the “movie experience” to you. The pricing for each package includes installation and set-up, so they’re great turn-key options. Customize your package with additional accessories like a universal remote dimmer than will bring down your lights, turn on your receiver and start your movie…even the stylish credenzas are available. If there’s a VIP room, it’s the lush home theater room with a hundred-inch projection screen, sound paneling, inwall electronics tower, and motorized leather theater seating. If you can bear to leave, take the time to experiment with the variety of speakers in the revamped and freshly soundpaneled speaker demo room. And don’t miss the display table of internet radios. Richard says, “With options like the Sonos music system and the Pioneer Elite AirPlay Music Player, you can play any music wirelessly in any room of your house...and the sound quality’s great!” You don’t have to be a Hollywood A-lister or pull in the megabucks to get star treatment. Scott says, “Richard and I love keeping up with the latest products. We’re always changing up our inventory and our showroom to choose electronics that offer the best experience for the best value. Stop by and let us show you what we’ve found!” Home Theater Evolutions 281-980-2300 3157 Highway 6 at Williams Trace www.htevo.com

hen Sherrie Ryberg was at Advanced Dermatology getting Cool Sculpting, the receptionist gave her a great tip. She says, “The receptionist told me she’d had bad veins and Dr. Baltazar took care of them for her. She told me what a great job he’d done and how nice he was. I had a bulging vein over my knee that wasn’t looking great. That wasn’t enough to make me seek help, but then it started to hurt. Finally it was so uncomfortable, I just didn’t want to deal with it any more, so I called Dr. Baltazar and made an appointment. I’d call it a cosmetic and a medical issue.” Winner of the 2011 Patients’ Choice Award, Vascular Surgeon Dr. Ulises Baltazar, MD. has been board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery for over a decade. There’s no question he’s the vein expert...and Sherrie agrees! She says, “The whole thing was very quick. I saw Dr. Baltazar one week for my consultation and exam, the next week I was in for the procedure. I asked if he was finished numbing my leg and he said, “We’re all finished with everything, Sherrie.” I asked him, “With the whole procedure?” and he said yes! I was totally shocked at how quick it was and how painless. All I felt was some mild tingling! Now that the procedure is over, I don’t have any pain. There’s one little vein left that Dr. Baltazar said should go away on its own, or he’ll take care of it for me for free.” “One of the best things about Dr. Baltazar was how sweet he is. I was getting ready to change jobs, so I wasn’t sure about how my insurance would transition. He told me not to worry about it, that they’d work through all the details and get everything taken care of. He said, “I don’t want this to be the reason you don’t come back in.” Sometimes a doctor’s office makes the insurance your problem, but his office takes care of everything!” “Not only that, but Dr. Baltazar’s so pleasant, gentle, and patientoriented. He really takes his time with each patient, and he also runs right on schedule. I was running a little late, but he worked with my schedule to make sure I never cooled my heels in the waiting room and I always got out of his office right on time. I highly recommend him...in fact, I’ve even recommended him to my new boss!”

Ride Into

hen summer plumbing problems dampen your mood, call the local company with the reputation and experience to get you your summer back on track. Classic American values of hard work and an honest living are still alive at Alan’s Plumbing, where they know that the only job worth doing is a job done well. Ride into summer with confidence thanks to Alan’s Plumbing. For over fifteen years Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter has provided quality plumbing service to the families of Fort Bend County. Along with his brothers, Chris and Brian, and the newest member of the team Zach Wagner, he’s made a name for Alan’s Plumbing as professional, prompt, and precise. The families of Fort Bend love getting quality work at a fair price from Alan and the guys. How does a family business build a reputation? The same way a country does... through a history of doing things the right way and by sons following in their father’s footsteps. Every year Alan and Jennifer’s three skilled sons–Beau, Luke, and Jake–add to their

experience, their knowledge, and their history with their Dad’s business. Mom Jennifer says, “Our boys have been going out with their dad and uncle since they were about eight or nine years old. A few summers ago they put in the hours to earn their apprentice plumbing licenses. Beau is working with us full time now and Luke and Jake are working during the summer with us. They’ve got the credentials, the experience...and they want to make their Dad proud and our customers happy!” Keep the water where it’s supposed to be this summer...in the pool or in your pipes. If you’ve got a running toilet, a leaky tap, a dripping faucet, or a damaged pipe, don’t wait to call 281-2611064. Alan says, “Taking care of a little problem keeps it from becoming a big one and save you money and trouble down the line. Call us when you’ve got a plumbing problem or need a remodel this summer...and enjoy a safe and happy Fourth of July from all of us at Alan’s Plumbing!” Alan’s Plumbing • 281-261-1064

ouldn’t it be nice if the kids went back to school and all you had to do was put your feet up and relax? Anyone who thinks that’s the case clearly hasn’t experienced September with a houseful of children. Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. says, “I’ve seen moms and dads racing around trying to get to informational meetings, sports tryouts, figure out homework assignments, and get adjusted to a new schedule for every kid. You may expect to be worn out...but sometimes there’s an underlying cause that we can fix to help increase your energy and keep you going strong!” Why can’t you keep up with your kids this year? Dr. Campbell says, “Drops in hormone levels affect men as well as women. We can diagnose and treat hormonal imbalances with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy to give parents the stamina to make it through another back-to-school season.” •

Do you have over-committed mom stress or is it something else? Dr. Campbell says, “Fatigue, night sweats, weight gain, headaches, loss of libido, osteoporosis, insomnia, diminished mental clarity, endometriosis, lack of energy or drive, fibrocystic breast disease, hot flashes and vaginal dryness could all be signs that your body needs hormone balancing with a combination of bio-identical estrogen hormones and progesterone. Once you’re balanced from the inside out, you’ll be able to enjoy the energy, the focus, and enthusiasm again!” Dad, can you even remember how great you used to feel? Dr. Campbell says, “By the time we guys reach our mid to late thirties, testosterone levels may drop, causing decreased muscle mass and bone density, insulin resistance, decreased sex drive, less energy, irritability and feelings of depression. At the direction of your doctor, I can compound your testosterone replacement in a cream, an injection, or a troche. With the right balance, you can feel like your old self again!” As the kids get back to school and life swings into high gear, it’s time to get educated about the benefits of balancing your hormones. Dr. Campbell says, “I offer consultations by appointment for individuals, couples, and groups to help you take control of your health and regain the balance in your life!” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy 281-980-2555 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 www.CampbellsCompounding.com

Next Stop...St. Michael’s! Why Would You Wait? Courtney McIlvoy

ootball may take center stage in Texas come fall, but in the summertime, the baseball field is the place to be. When Michael Garfield, the ‘HighTech Texan’, went to his son’s baseball game five years ago, he wasn’t expecting a trip to the emergency room. Not knowing they would have to wait an hour and a half to see a doctor, Michael took his son to a traditional emergency room. When it comes to family and loved ones, no one wants to wait so long to get help. Thankfully, traditional emergency rooms are not the only option. St. Michael’s Emergency Room is a state-of-the-art emergency room founded by Dr. Shannon Orsak and his brother, Brian Orsak. “I met Dr. Orsak several years ago when he was getting ready to open St. Michael’s and I really liked the concept. I have three boys and if you have young boys you are always going to need emergency care,” Michael says. Not only does St. Michael’s take good care of their patients, but they value their patients’ time as well. As the “High-Tech Texan,”

Michael made their next stop St. Michael’s. Michael wears many hats. “I’ve primarily been a radio host on the 9-5-0 AM six days a week, for the past twelve years. I talk about various topics, but my sweet spot is technology,” Michael says. Being so busy, St. Michael’s limited wait time policy was very helpful to him. He says, “I’m a very impatient person! Waiting doesn’t work for me. That’s why St. Michael’s is the best place around.” St. Michael’s wastes no time. Michael says, “You’re immediately in the back in a room getting treated. It’s in and out very fast.” When one of his sons needed medical treatment after being in a car accident and another son needed care for a knee injury suffered while playing football in the front yard, Michael knew where to go...St. Michael’s Emergency Room. In addition to taking all three of his sons there, Michael himself has gone in for treatment more than once. “I run marathons, I’m a part-time athlete, and when I hurt my ankle, I went to St. Michael’s.” “Sometimes I want to make up an illness just to go over there and visit!” jokes Michael. He has no hesitation in going to St. Michael’s, and neither should you! Stop by anytime for Prompt attention, quality care.

f you or someone you know has ill-fitting or painful dentures, it’s more than a cosmetic problem. Thomas M. Lomonte, D.D.S. says, “Tooth loss can be the first sign of bigger health issues. Dentures that don’t fit properly may contribute to gum disease and larger problems from oral cancer to heart disease. And anyone who’s tried to enjoy an apple or corn on the cob with poorly fitted dentures knows it can be hard to make the healthy choices that add years to your life and life to your years. I wanted to find a solution for this group of patients...and the miniMARK Implant System is the perfect answer. These are reliable, affordable miniature implants that combine minimum size with maximum comfort!” When dentures don’t properly fit, bacteria can lie in areas behind them and lead to chronic infections in the gum supporting the denture. Not only can this make your gums sore and make it painful to eat well, gum disease may also contribute to diseases like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Dr. Lomonte says, “Studies suggest that patients with poorly-fitting dentures or multiple missing back teeth may have a shorter life span...by up to ten years!” Why should life be grim or complicated? “I believe in keeping things simple and looking for the best way to make your life (and your smile!) easier,” says Dr. Lomonte. The MiniMARK Implant system is a one-day, minimally-invasive, in-office procedure, so you’ll be in good hands in the same comfortable, friendly environment you already know. Once your dentures are anchored in place with a mini-implant, you’ll be able to smile freely, treat yourself to a nice steak, or crunch on delicious veggies and really enjoy yourself! Make the most of your life by making the most of your smile! Dr. Lomonte says, “My whole team and I are here to make it pleasant and even fun to keep your dental appointments. We’ve got all kinds of solutions to solve any problems you might have. Come tell us what’s keeping you from smiling and we’ll get you and your smile back on track!”

hen you’re a little kid, freckles and sunburns are just a part of summer, but for adults summer memories live on in the damage to our skin and complexion. Now that summer’s giving way to fall, let’s turn back the hands of time with the help of the experts at Kalologie Medspa. Wish you had the same dewy complexion you did so many summers ago? As we age, stubborn brown and red spots from the sun, broken capillaries, and pigmented lesions often combine to create a blotchy, uneven skin tone. Kalologie’s IPL (intense pulsed light) facial rejuvenates the skin and reverse sun and age damage. A routine facial maintenance program can bring back the complexion you used to have. Bailey Huber, Manager at our Sugar Land Kalologie says,

“The cumulative effects of a series of our Photo Facials delivers even more dramatic results in the quality of your skin...and our IPL photo facial has virtually no downtime, so it won’t interrupt your regular routine. We offer convenient facial packages through our Spa Membership program to save you money and make it easy to care for your skin!” Want another amazing anti-aging secret? Thermage, a non-invasive, FDA-approved procedure featured on Dr. Oz’s “Ultimate AntiAging Show” can reverse damage caused by sun exposure, time, and gravity on your face...and other places, too! Thermage works by stimulating your body’s natural renewal of collagen using unique radiofrequency (RF) technology. It’s a one-time treatment that starts to deliver results from day one and you’ll see your most dramatic results six months later...those results continue to develop naturally and last for two years. Essentially it breaks down your old collagen and cellulite and delivers tighter smoother skin, softened lines and wrinkles, and increased lift and firmness on your skin. “If you have our Kalologie Spa Membership for your monthly facial,” says Bailey, “don’t forget you’ll also get a ten percent discount on Thermage, and our other treatments and beauty

Sarah Warburton hen it’s time for those back-to-school checkups, you take your kids to your family pediatrician...but their shot record and growth charts aren’t the only things that need to be updated. “Every year, your child’s vision changes,” says optometrist Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source. “Kids won’t say the world is blurry, because they think that’s the way the world looks to everyone. A comprehensive professional eye exam checks that eyes are tracking properly, rules out lazy eye, addresses over or under focusing, and gets your child ready for a great year!” Some things are just a no-brainer! Everyone knows their primary care doctor gives better patient care than a “drive-through doctor.” Why would you expect less for your eyes? You and your family deserve the knowledge and individual attention of a family optometrist with deep roots in our community. Patients know that they’ll see the same friendly faces and get the same expert care visit after visit in Dr. Doan’s office. Have you done your homework? When you want personal, unhurried attention and genuine concern for your health, you need an independent optometrist. “Big box docs” are under

We believe your success starts with your vision

pressure to get-’em-in and get-’em-out...and to sell, sell, sell. You may spend five times as long in the waiting room as you spend in the exam room! Not only that, but staff turnover makes it hard to get continuity of care. Maybe you’re tempted by heavily-discounted lenses and frames? You may not get a long-lasting, quality pair of glasses that’s really appropriate for your needs. Once you see Dr. Doan’s personal attention and the professional care, you won’t trust your eyes to anyone else! She says, “I love seeing the patients I examined before their first day of Kindergarten heading off to college. From the initial exam through diagnostic testing and the fitting of eyeglasses or contact lenses, being trusted with your family’s vision health means the world to me. My advice to parents this year is to watch for kids suffering headaches, squinting, complaining about reading, or tilting their head or closing one eye when reading or working on the computer. Those are warning signs of a vision problem...and I’m here to help!”

How to Renovate Your Bathroom Yourself Sarah Warburton

F

irst of all, you’ll strip out your bathroom, navigate the plumbing and electrics, and waterproof...before you even start to think about fitting out the shower, vanity, bathtub and toilet, finishing the wiring and plumbing, installing the vanity tops, and then painting. Budget between $12,000 and $30,000 and set aside a month when you won’t use your bathroom...is there a good one at your gym? Luckily, you DON’T have to renovate your bathroom to get a complete and total bathroom makeover. Jonee and Paul Barnett, owners of Miracle Method Surface Restoration, say, “For a fraction of the time, expense, and hassle of a major renovation we can make your old bathroom look like new!” Let’s start with the bathtub and vanity. If your tub’s tired, worn out, damaged, or an outdated color, Miracle Method will repair chips or cracks and restore the surface...better than new! The total cost to remove and replace a bathtub could be $3,000 or more... but the Miracle Method’s only a tiny fraction of that. Moving on to the counters and sinks, change up your tile, marble or Formica with the Miracle Method’s beautiful finishes like the popular Natural Accents. Refinishing will extend the useful life of most any bathroom fixture or surface for 15 years or more, while saving you a substantial portion of the cost of removal and remodeling! Removing tile is a difficult, messy, timeconsuming job! Why not save time and money by having your bathroom tile refinished by Miracle Method? Jonee says, “Bathroom tile around the bathtub, on the walls or on the vanity are all excellent candidates for tile refinishing. Miracle Method’s process of cleaning the tile, use of our MM-4 bonding agent, and application of superior top coats will assure you a durable long-lasting finish for your bathroom tile. We take pride in our work and back it up with a warranty for your peace of mind!” Get a beautiful new bathroom in less time and Miracle Method for less money with the Miracle Method! eed one last fun adventure for the kids before the back to school frenzy begins? Check out Mr. Whistle, Mr. Bumpy, and Mr. Thirsty! You won’t find them on Nickelodeon, they are the “special” tools used by Dr. Bianca Sanchez for check-ups at Little People’s Dentistry! Did you know that more than half of all children between the ages of 5 and 9 have a least one cavity or filling? Dr. Sanchez says, “Regular checkups and preventive dental are like “smile insurance,” helping us catch and correct problems early.” And this “smile insurance” is fun…along with the help of tools Mr. Whistle, Mr. Bumpy, and Mr. Thirsty, your child gets to choose between a pink flamingo or zebra Zooby dental brush, and then choose from a variety of toothpaste flavors including vanilla ice cream and chocolate! And of course there are rewards for an excellent exam…squirt toys like fish and butterflies for the babies and cool, kooky glasses or helium balloons for the big kids!

Along with preventive dental care, the American Dental Association also recommends every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7 to prevent or reduce the severity of malocclusions (bad bite) in the permanent teeth. No worries, Little People’s Dentistry has your kids covered…Dr. Gary Radford specializes in orthodontics. Dr. Radford says, “Orthodontics for kids aren’t just about the way the smile looks, but the way the jaw and teeth function…problems could affect their performance in school, their general health, and the state of their mouth.” And should your child require braces, Dr. Radford offers Saturday appointments, making the frequent orthodontic appointments easier on your schedule during the busy school year. Check out the fun for yourself! Visit the Little People’s Dentistry website for games and contests, and you can even schedule appointments! Have a smart phone? This’ll you! Chance Made Them Neighbors. Good Taste Made Them Friends. G Sarah Warburton ood neighbors offer more than a friendly wave when you get the paper. Really excellent neighbors provide encouragement, support, and recommendations you can trust. So when Shelly and Geoff Kaplan got a recommendation from their neighbors, Rebecca and Richard Stepp, for All About Carpet the Kaplans took that advice! “Several years ago,” says Rebecca. “We used All About Carpet and Floors and the carpet they installed held up well...but it was their customer service that really brought me back for hardwood floors. About the same time I decided to get our hardwood flooring put in, Shelly asked me for a recommendation for her flooring. There was no question in my mind...I recommended All About Carpet.” When a company’s good, word gets around. Shelly says, “Rebecca referred me to All About Carpet. I knew she and her husband had used them before and that Rebecca’s mom is a realtor who knew families who also liked All About Carpet. I went into the showroom to see Bob, Reneé and Shaun...and they gave me quite an education about hardwood floors. To tell you the truth, we did get three different quotes for the work at the beginning. After meeting with the different companies, we went with All About Carpet because of their years of knowledge. They were ver y professional and experienced and had a good relationship with Johnson, the manufacturer of the flooring we chose. That gave me confidence that the job would be done well and they would take care of any problems. That kind of professionalism really gives you peace of mind when you’re getting a big project done in your home.” Even a big job like getting your flooring redone can be easy with a company you can trust. Shelly says, “This was a major job! They tore up our

downstairs flooring and installed all new hardwood, then extended it into the other rooms. I chose the Johnson variable width planks that’s lightly scraped for an artisan look...and I really love it! The installer knew what he was doing and was very polite, too. I had such confidence in All About Carpet that we stayed at my mother’s house while the work was being done. I’m so pleased with the way it looks that I’m ready to recommend them to anyone!” Find out why your neighbors are buzzing about All About Carpets. Bob, Reneé, and Shaun McKelvey invite you to come to their showroom and see the possibilities for yourself. Bob says, “We’d like to be your store for flooring, counters, and tile for years to come!” All About Carpet and Floors 281-265-3700 3145 Highway 6 South (next to Shipley’s) www.allaboutcarpet.com

Experiencing Infertility: Afreen & Sudhir’s Story

y husband Sudhir and I tried to have a baby for six months before I went to my Ob/Gyn for help. After six more months of tests and treatment, she referred me to a Reproductive Endocrinologist, Dr. Subodh Chauhan, at the Fertility Specialists of Houston. He talked with me, ordered more tests, then started me out with four cycles of Clomid. Afterwards, we tried four cycles of IUI. I put my trust in him and his expertise. The hardest thing was feeling so frustrated and emotional. Your life just stops...and people tell you to relax and not think about getting pregnant, but it’s the only thing you can think about. I prayed often and had encouragement from my husband, my mom and my in-laws. Even so, sometimes you feel like the only person in the world who has to struggle so hard for children. Finally we needed a break. Dr. Chauhan said, “I respect your decision and just hope you’ll come back when you’re ready.” Six months later, we decided to try IVF. I am deathly afraid of needles, but Sudhir gave me every shot and he was so gentle that they were painless. He told me, “You have a winner’s spirit and the heart of a a champion; I know you can do this!” He was my rock. In May we did the egg retrieval and the embryo transfer, and my heart started telling me I was pregnant...but I was afraid to believe. On June 6th,

one day before my birthday, we learned we were pregnant and on June 21 we had the ultrasound. All the pain and struggle just melted away from my memory and when I heard my baby’s heartbeat for the first time, I knew I’d go through everything again just to have a child of my own. Sudhir and I are so excited about this baby, and we’d love to have two more. I learned I have a genetic disorder, so IVF will be necessary whenever I want to have a child...but I have no hesitation at all about returning to Dr. Chauhan and recommending him to others. Dr. Chauhan was so supportive and skilled and everyone in his office––Debbie, Chris, and Veronica––feel like friends. They took such joy in helping our dreams of a family come true! The school’s philosophy of nurturing well-balanced children made a profound impression on them...and soon after, Sotirios and Estela decided to share the Primrose Vision with the Pearland community. Today they have three thriving Primrose Schools in Pearland and have recently taken ownership of the Primrose School in First Colony. “Over the last year,” says Estela, “we have completed the brand refresh, which is a complete renovation of the school. We believe that curious, confident, compassionate kids grow into successful, intelligent adults.” Estela says, “Our children we first brought to Primrose are almost grown up now. Amy Sharp e’re not talking lip gloss, this is your front door! Rick Davis, owner of local establishment Rick’s Front Door Refinishing, says, “The front door is thought to be the “mouth” of the home, the entry point where energy, abundance and opportunities may find us. Wow…that’s a pretty big responsibility to hang on a front door!” When it comes to refinishing wood, Rick has been perfecting the art for more than fortyfive years. He started refinishing pianos at age eleven, and he’s refinished everything from antique tables to jukeboxes to a Horse Drawn Hearse from the 1800’s. Now he and his team of experts want to refinish your wooden door! What’s Fort Bend’s favorite door? Rick says, “Wooden exterior doors...handsdown! Wooden doors are beautiful and relatively affordable, depending upon the type and quality of wood used. Despite their good looks, wooden exterior doors

do have a few disadvantages. Wood must be treated regularly with preservative, paint or varnish to protect it from the ravages of wind and rain. Neglecting this will cause rotting, and you will need to replace the door after just a few short years.” If your door needs a face-lift, it won’t take long at all! Your team of experts will remove the door from its hinges, replace it with a piece of plastic, and bring it out to the driveway or street…to keep any noise, dust or fumes away from your home. The door is chemically stripped of the old finish, washed, and any minor damage is repaired. Then a premium stain in the luxurious color of your choice is applied and finished with four coats of a UV protective spar urethane for protection and endless shine. A new weather strip is also installed if needed. In most cases, your beautiful “new” front door will be reinstalled within four hours! Cleaning to the “Max” Max’s Cleaning Tip: Nobody likes to play, “What’s that stain?” Max says, “Everything from red wine to gravy to straight-up mud can end up in your rugs. Fill one spray bottle with cold water and in another mix 1/4 teaspoon dishwashing liquid with 1 cup of warm water. Spray the detergent solution onto a washcloth and dab (don’t rub!) the spot and blot with a clean section of the cloth. Keep applying and blotting until the stain is gone. Then spray another cloth with cold water and rinse the detergent from the carpet. Blot it dry, then place a stack of paper towels and a heavy pot on top and leave overnight. In the morning, fluff the fibers and allow it to finish airdrying. Your stain should be gone!”
