A New Vision of Service

A New Vision of Service

E

legance, compassion, and warmth — families in mourning find comfort through the “Five Star Hospitality” offered at Sugar Land Mortuary (SLM), the newest funeral home in the greater Houston area. L. Donnell Williams, Sugar Land Mortuary’s visionary founder, designed SLM to be the culmination of all the lessons learned over his last 20 years as a licensed funeral director and funeral home owner. “Since our grand opening less than two years ago, we’ve had the honor of serving families primarily from Sugar Land, Missouri City, Stafford, Katy, and southwest Houston, but also as far away as The Woodlands,” says Williams. The design of the building, the comfortable interior and the outstanding hospitality are all vital parts of the SLM experience. Katrina Bogany of Exponereal Development Services in Missouri City was SLM’s General Contractor. She says, “I worked very closely with the owner and architect to make the owner’s vision a reality. That’s our specialty at Exponereal. Every thoughtful detail of Sugar Land Mortuary related to how families would best be served.” In addition to building a beautiful facility for the families, one of Williams’s chief concerns when planning SLM was staffing. It was extremely important that every member of the staff have an unwavering commitment to service, and an ability to focus on the details. “After an exhaustive search, our first hire was our facility manager and service coordinator, Mrs. Kathryn Boone,” says Williams. Mrs. Boone came highly recommended by his fellow Sugar Land Rotary Club member, Bill Singletary, who raved about her southern charm, stylish flair, and caring nature. Since joining SLM, Mrs. Boone has become a Licensed Pre-Need Counselor and is the first line of contact for those who call or come by SLM. While the facility and the hospitality of SLM give you a premium experience, Sugar Land Mortuary is still afford-

able for any family. “When you check the prices of Sugar Land Mortuary against the prices of the other funeral homes in the area,” says Williams, “we’re confident you’ll find we’re less expensive, but offer far more elegant facilities, and unparalleled service. Families also have the option to customize their service and stay within their budget by paying only for those services that matter most to them.” SLM expertly guides families through the process of planning funerals, visitations, and memorials so that the services are a reflection of the deceased. From the food that is served, to the music that plays in the background, to the memorial videos, families are able to design truly unique services. “We’ve had such great variety in our services,” states Williams. “Some families simply want receptions with wine and hors d’oeuvres, others want full-course dining events. Some prefer live harp music, or string quartets, and others want live or recorded classical, jazz, gospel, or country and western music. It’s really about designing a service that truly honors the deceased.” No other funeral home in the greater Houston area was designed and built with a reception center. SLM was truly built with family time in mind, and the gatherings at SLM seem to invite discussion long after the services are over. Months later, families continue to receive glowing comments about the facility and the exceptional service, along with compliments on how they honored their loved one. “It is always our goal to give the family and the deceased all that they deserve,” says Williams. TurnedOn! Finding the Right Guys

G

etting the job done right depends on finding the right guys to do the job! In addition to adding 1000 square feet to the upstairs of their home and a 1000 square foot garage, Joe and Robin Davis decided to install a home automation system. Joe says, “We had a company doing the pre-wiring for our new construction, but we were so fed up with scheduling issues that we’d decided to look elsewhere for the home automation. Too many companies weren’t very professional and struggled to supply bids and keep appointment in a timely manner. Robin kept an UpClose Magazine ad about Richard Machemehl and Scott Crain’s Home Theater Evolutions, so we called them up. Richard was on the spot... easy to work with, quick, and efficient. Working with Home Theater Evolutions was really easy. I had a different brand in mind, but Richard suggested the Savant. It’s pretty sophisticated system from a design standpoint, but they make it easy to use. He also made several accommodations on the bid to take into account our existing speakers and he found subwoofers that could be installed in the ceiling, rather than the floor. That was important to my wife. Now we have our iPad operate the televisions in our master bedroom, family room, game room, and home theater. It controls the lights in our master bedroom, family room, game room, theater room, foyer, and front porch... and they’re programmable so we can set them to come on

and off at certain times. In every case appointments were honored and our time was respected! We already had a sound system in the house and backyard by the pool, but we wanted all those areas brought into the system. Richard incorporated everything and put it into place pretty flawlessly. We did have to rewire the speakers, so all the components ended up in one place––out of sight! I knew we’d have to put air conditioning in that space, because those electronics get pretty hot. In addition, Richard recommending adding a thermostat-controlled exhaust fan. He was absolutely right. That inexpensive solution works like a dream...and we really did need both! One of the most impressive things was that a week or two after the work was finished, Richard sent me an email to see if everything was working well and if there was anything we needed hooked up. How many times does an owner of the company follow-up with you after the job is done? He sent a guy out to hook my son’s X-Box up to the system... and just like everything else we did with Home Theater Evolutions, it happened on-time. I knew I wouldn’t have to take off work or chase them down. Home Theater Evolutions is professional, timely, and a real pleasure to have on your team! Putting Your

Fat to Use I

s there such a thing as good fat? Dr. Steven Victor, Chairman/CEO of IntelliCell™ Biosciences, Inc. believes good things could come from your fat. You may have seen Dr. Victor, a practicing celebrity dermatologist with over twenty years experience, on 20/20, Good Morning America, or The Today Show or you may have read his numerous magazine or news articles. Dr. Victor is renowned in the field of Dermatology, pioneering some of the most effective and interesting treatments in skin rejuvenation today. Now his new company, IntelliCell™ Biosciences, has made incredible advances in regenerative medicine using adipose (fat) derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) containing adult stem cells. So how can you get stem cells from your fat? The IntelliCell™ technology process yields SVF...an abundance of cells that work synergistically. This functionally diverse population of cells is believed to be able to communicate with other cells in their local environment. Dr. Victor says, “The SVF which we have branded as “IntelliCell™” is more than regenerative. The mixture of cells have multiple functions and are highly integrated...and we believe it’s even more potent than the adipose stem cells themselves.” What does that mean? IntelliCell™ has developed an exclusive in-house technology where it can easily process SVF cells containing a high concentration of adipose stem cells. Essentially, if your doctor prescribes adipose (fat) stem cells for a treatment, the doctor extracts your fat tissue through a simple procedure. The IntelliCell lab will process it (without any enzymes), in a matter of minutes! Then the stem cells will be returned to your doctor on the very same day. Since the procedure takes place during your office visit, the donor and the recipient are the same person, and the stem cells are minimally manipulated, IntelliCell™ BioScience is in 100% compliance with FDA 361, under which patients are allowed to use their own stem cells for just about any indication. Dr. Steven Victor This technology really is the wave of the future! IntelliCell™ Centers are already open in Philadelphia, New York, Dallas/Fort Worth, Orlando, Miami, and New Orleans. Before the end of the year, IntelliCell will open an Adipose Stem Cell Processing Center in our area, making adipose derived stem cells and SVF available for local doctors! “We believe IntelliCell™ is setting the gold standard for adipose stem cell processing,” says Dr. Victor. “Our technology provides stem cell counts and viability checks for each specimen processed, and documents the quality and quantity of the stem cells produced. We believe IntelliCell™’s entry into the Houston market will allow us to offer local physicians, researchers, and healthcare centers access to the highest number and quality SVF cells which contain adult stem cells through our proprietary, FDA-compliant process. We are very pleased to see the Houston area receive this promising service.”

Did You Forget? W

Sarah Warburton e’ve all got a lot going on this time of year. Just when you pack away the Halloween costumes, it’s time to get ready for Thanksgiving. Even though your trees can’t talk, doesn’t mean they aren’t asking for help. Cammy Simpson of Simpson’s Tree Service says, “This drought has made our services indispensable. Getting your trees trimmed in November is the smart choice for the health of your trees...and your safety!” If you want your trees to look lush and beautiful in the Spring, you need expert help to get rid of the dead wood now! The friendly team at Simpson’s Tree Service will thin, trim, or remove overgrown branches, unwanted shoots, deadwood and old branches. Jimmie Simpson says, “During a drought it’s more important than ever to properly prune trees and shrubs. Trimming in the fall always encourages spring growth. If your trees aren’t trimmed, sunlight won’t hit the branches evenly and you’ll end up with shapeless, bushy trees...and without a lot of new growth.”

Getting your trees trimmed in November is the smart choice for the health of your trees...and your safety! Is a hidden danger hanging over your head? Sometimes a healthy branch and a damaged one look the same from the ground. One good storm or even just a lively breeze can send that dangerous branch crashing down, causing damage to the rest of the tree, your roof, your car, your neighbor’s property....or worse, a person! According to the National Climatic Data Center, fifty-three percent of all deaths during a thunderstorm are actually caused by fallen trees

or limbs. Not only that, but broken, dead, insect-infested or diseased branches can further weaken a tree during drought, leading to deadly secondary insect and disease problems. Call the trusted team at Simpson’s Tree Service to remove those troubled branches before they harm the tree...or something else. “In our twenty years in the business, we’ve never seen a drought like we have this year,” says Cammy. “It’s really stressed our local trees, so it’s more important than ever to have brittle, fragile branches removed before they do any damage. Trimming diseases or dead limbs lightens the load on the root system. Follow that with a good mulching to keep in the moisture and your trees will be ready to recover while they wait for Spring!” For trimming, cutting, and removal services, call 281-980-0095 www.simpsonstreeservice.com

Who Do You Trust?

Sarah Warburton ix year ago, the nurse at Brazos Bend Elementary emailed Joan Klekar about her first-grader. Joan says, “She told me Kasen had a lazy eye that would affect her vision and her development. I was so worried, but she recommended two optometrists that could help. Dr. Anh Doan was top of the list. At our first appointment, I loved her immediately...it’s just her personality! Her staff is so polite and welcoming. She has good people backing her up. Today we don’t live anywhere close to her office, but I make the drive from Richmond because there’s no one I trust more.”

“Today we don’t live anywhere close to her office, but I make the drive from Richmond because there’s no one I trust more.”

“Right away, Dr. Doan really connected with my daughter...and she hasn’t forgotten one single thing over the years! The way she talks with Kasen about volleyball and horseback riding shows that she’s really listening. Kasen was so excited about her glasses until fourth grade...then she wanted contacts. Dr. Doan spelled out the rules for her, especially not touching or rubbing her eyes. Since Kasen really likes Dr. Doan and looks up to her, she listened to the instructions and has been doing great! She started in biweekly lenses but after a year we switched her to daily lenses and it was one of the best decisions we made. The contacts are wonderful for volleyball and especially for riding. Since it’s hot, she’s wearing a hat, and you can’t adjust your glasses while holding the reins. Dr. Doan knew that contacts lenses would fit well with Kasen’s activities and her sensitive skin and eyes.” “Dr. Doan’s the type of person you like to have in your circle. When she’s taking care of you, it’s like nobody else matters. She cares––not just about her patients––but also about their families. When she found out I had been diagnosed with breast cancer, she sent Kasen out to get fitted with her contacts and talked with me privately to really find out how I was doing. When I see her around town, she always greets me with a hug and asks about Kasen and my health. Dr. Doan’s a wonderful doctor and a fantastic person!” Dr. Anh Doan, O.D. y friends will tell you that locally owned and operated Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant and Bar is one of my favorite spots for lunch! I love the cosmopolitan decor and comfortable environment...and I can’t get enough of the food. Why’s everything so fresh? Because if you don’t see Keeper behind the Sushi bar or visiting with customers, he’s on his daily run to the fish company choosing you the very best! My perfect meals starts with a little teapot of Dobin Mushi soup. Drink the fragrant broth out of the little cup, then eat the sweet morsels of Sashimi-grade red snapper, fresh clam, shrimp, fishcake, chicken, shitaki mushroom and a gingko nut...good for the memory. I’ll follow that with one of Keeper’s signature rolls...or maybe something new like the Ocean Trout from Scotland. A deeper coral color than Salmon, it’s firm, fresh, and oh-so-sweet. My Miracle Baby A

fter Valerie lost her husband of twenty-one years to cancer, she could never have imagined what the future would hold. She says, “When I met my second husband Ron, I even took my sister and niece on our first date! After we got married, Ron brought up children. I said, “Are you crazy? Do you know how old I am? Forty-seven!!” My Ob/Gyn said I didn’t have any time to waste (I was actually premenopausal), and she sent me to Dr. Subodh Chauhan. When Dr. Chauhan did my exam in 2009, he found that my hormone levels weren’t high enough for fertility...and I had fibroids the size of grapefruits and my uterus was completely impacted. All the other doctors said, she’ll have to have a complete hysterectomy, but Dr. Chauhan said, “No, I have to give her hope.” I lost over 66 percent of my uterus in a delicate surgery that took over three hours. He had the skills and the compassion to make it happen. After I healed, I started fertility medication (Ron gave me the shots) and Dr. Chauhan implanted the embryos in June of 2010. I could see him taking his time and picking the best spot. I kept taking home pregnancy tests, but they kept coming up negative. Finally Dr. Chauhan called me at work and asked, “Are you sitting down? You’re going to have a baby!” He was so kind, so nice, and completely at the top of his game. He makes you feel

everything is possible. Whenever I needed Dr. Chauhan––on the phone, through email, or in the office––he was there. Throughout my pregnancy they monitored me because of my age––forty-eight. Once I had a little bleeding and called Dr. Chauhan at the end of the day. He said, “Come over and I’ll wait for you.” He met me at the door, took me to the ultrasound, and reassured me that my baby and I were still okay. I turned forty-nine on February twenty-second and two days later my daughter Lexi was born at thirty-nine weeks...without any complications. Dr. Chauhan came to see me in the hospital and held her with a big smile. If you had told me three years ago I’d have a beautiful healthy baby girl and be thinking about another, I would have said you were crazy! If anyone can make it happen, Dr. Chauhan can! very November, it seems like clocks start ticking double-time: the days march briskly away, and suddenly, the year’s end is upon us. Maybe it’s the approach of the holidays, or the cooler weather, but whatever it is, the arrival of winter’s a sure sign for business owners that it’s time

to think about end-of-year planning. “Ideally, your year-end planning— and your budgeting for next year— should all be squared away by the holidays,” explains local CPA John Trevathan, who specializes in providing financial services to small and midsized businesses. “Nobody wants to have that hanging over their heads at Christmas...and you want to be able to hit the ground running in January.”

“A realistic budget is the single most important financial planning tool a business can have,” John says So get busy! Scare up any extra minutes you can, so you can end the year on a high note. Here are some tips from John on what to do: Clean up your ledger. Make sure all transactions are entered and that your accounts are reconciled. Think about taxes. See if there’s anything you can do to decrease your tax liabil-

ity—whether it’s accelerating expenses this year or deferring revenue until next year. Plan ahead. First things first: summarize what happened this year, so you can have a clear picture of where to start. Then begin to build your budget for next year—and get it in place before the holidays. “A realistic budget is the single most important financial planning tool a business can have,” John says. “It’s basically a well-thought-out business plan, translated into plain and simple financial terms. Our job is to help you design a template. We’ll do this by taking into account your current financial picture...and any new products or offerings you’re planning on putting in place next year.” This is the perfect time to get started, so give John Trevathan a call. End the year right—celebrating with your family...with the hard work of planning already behind you! oes this sound familiar? Once a married couple hits forty... they’re not the same people who got married years earlier. Dad loses his energy and passion and sits around in the recliner watching “Animal Planet.” And Mom runs on pure adrenaline and aggression, going five hundred directions at once. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph. says, “When your hormones are out of balance, so are your relationships. Hormonal imbalance affects both men and women, but it isn’t an inevitability of aging. Once your hormones are in balance, you’ll enjoy life and all your relationships with energy and vigor again.” Some signs of hormonal imbalance are as plain as the nose—or the hair—on your face. When estrogen and testosterone become imbalanced, you may suffer anxiety, insomnia, poor concentration, irritability, weight gain, acne, hair loss, night sweats, or reduced sex drive. Women may lose their waists, have trouble sleeping, or suffer dull skin and facial hair. Men may grow flabby breasts, have poor skin tone, and lose their libido. Do you look in the mirror (or at your

and body weight. Testosterone plays a similar role for men. Dr. Campbell says, “It’s a common misconception that only women suffer from hormonal imbalances. Signs of low testosterone include weight gain, depression, and lethargy. Under the right circumstances, hormone replacement therapy can save your sanity...and your relationship!” If you have questions about Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement or testosterone supplements, call Dr. Campbell. He says, “I offer consultations by appointment for individuals, couples, and groups to help you take control of your health and regain the balance in your life. Gwyneth Hope enee was humbled by the complement and smiled at Bob as Margaret, a new customer, began leaving the store. “We are pretty good, ha?” she said with a wink to Bob. Renee and Bob McKelvey have owned and operated All About Carpet & Floors for over eighteen years. With a return and referral business of around 90%, they do the job on time and they do it right. “It’s so disappointing to see beautiful homes that are neglected,” says Bob. “Improving the carpet or upgrading the kitchen cabinets can easily change what seems like an old house into one that is vibrant and fresh. To be perfectly honest, most of our customers are amazed at how easy and affordable it really is.” Updating your home is as effortless as picking up the phone. Both Renee and Bob pride themselves in their extensive knowledge and experience acquired through the years. Whether you choose ceramic, laminate, carpet, or hardwood floors, or want to upgrade your counters, your tiled backsplashes or bathrooms, the experts at All About Carpet & Floors are happy to sit with you and explain everything...from which brand to use to what color will give your home a lasting and inviting effect. I learned a lot speaking with Bob and Renee. They helped me to understand how much my choices affect the mood and personality of the room. “As you know, color can dramatically impact the look and feel of any room.” says Bob. “Warm colors, such as yellows, oranges, and reds, help to create a friendly and comforting atmosphere. They tend to be richer and very inviting.” Cool colors like some violets, greens, and blues make a small space appear spacious and airy. “Cool colors,” adds Renee, “have a soft, calming effect...great for high traffic areas like walkways and kitchens. In a bathroom, we can tile the floors with blue, then tie the look together by running those tiles up

the wall, using different colors to create a decorative border, line the shower, or use complementary tones of stone for the counters. We’ll help you choose the perfect look for every room in your home.” Customers benefit from the recommendations of Bob and Renee, knowing that every item at All About Carpet & Floors has been selected for its superior quality. Renee and Bob ensure that their clients are receiving the very best by personally visiting the factories where they witness first-hand how their products are being made. “We don’t want to take any chances,” they tell me, “so we visit the factories and see what goes into the items we sell. Our reputation stands on what we offer our clients; we take that very seriously.” The selection at All About Carpet & Floors is unbeatable. They offer the highest quality items upheld by manufacturer guarantees and Bob and Renee’s exceptional customer service offerings. “What we recommend to our clients really depends on their individual needs and preferences,” says Renee. At All About Carpet & Floors, the service is personalized to each and every customer. It’s easy to see why people appreciate the service and attention they receive and come back for all their home improvement needs. Not only will Bob and Renee personally address questions, they will even visit your home to ensure that the job is done right and to your liking. “We’ve done it all,” says Bob. “One customer asked us to tear down her linen closet and extend her shower. Her bathroom looks amazing and she’s been referring customers to us ever since.” Whether you need remodeling, new countertops, tile or flooring... call All About Carpet & Floors and be proud of your home!

You’re Never Too Old!

Sarah Warburton wanted to fix my smile,” says Brandon Cox, “but I was a twenty-two-year-old college student making the decision on my own...and it felt like a big responsibility. After some research, I decided to see Dr. Lemke. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) at the University of Florida with the Dean’s Award, the Honors Award and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Award. She’d done lots of research, had some publications, and won the Clinical Excellence Award in Orthodontics. That all sounded good to me. Going into her office, I felt really self-conscious like only kids get braces, but she told me you’re never too old for braces...they’re good for all ages!

“I

I still had my doubts about whether I could get the results I wanted. Dr. Lemke walked me through everything––what to expect, how long it would take––and that really put me at ease. After talking about the options, I decided on traditional braces with brackets you couldn’t see, because they’d be effective without being too obvious. My friends who’d had braces as kids told me it would hurt, but I hardly noticed Dr. Lemke was putting them on until I got my wires tightened. You can tell she really knows what she’s doing. The whole thing took two years from start to finish. When my braces came off, I could really see what an amazing job she’d done. It’s an incredible difference. I see a hundred and ten percent improvement in my teeth...I’m smiling everywhere now!” Did you think braces were just for kids? Think again! You’re never too old to get the smile of your dreams. The

Keys to Success

Sarah Warburton magine the wreck of a once-proud ship. Rot and rust have eaten away at the hull and the remains of the tattered sail hang limply from the mast. If it were not wedged against solid rock, it would have sunk. Instead of sailing into port, it floats, partially submerged and completely abandoned. What made this ship run aground? The navigator may not have seen the hidden rocks. Maybe no one used the compass and sextant and the ship went off course. Perhaps the captain and crew were unprepared for storms that tossed the seas. A crew focused on larceny and piracy won’t remain loyal when times get hard. Mutiny and murder brought many ships to ruin. The United Nations estimates that three million shipwrecks lie on the ocean floor and thousands more are beached or float in ship graveyards like the US Navy “ghost fleet” at Suisan Bay. Some abandoned ships are broken down for scrap metal, others are left to decay in the elements. “Shipwrecks are usually found wrecked in remote areas,” says Don Kerstetter, owner of Classic Chevrolet in Sugar Land, says, “but today many regions are facing the question of what to do with failed dealerships right in the middle of their communities.” The same issues that wreck a ship––mismanagement, poor planning, or unethical behavior––can wreck a business. Don says, “Two and a half years ago, when we took over the dealership that stands at the corner of 59 and 90A, I claimed this abandoned, empty shipwreck, gathered an experienced, trustworthy crew, restocked her and made her seaworthy, then put her back on course. We completely

New lights and redesigned driveways make it easier and safer for our customers to enter or exit. And our team wears professional, casual attire that really invites you to ‘Relax and Enjoy the Difference.’” A ship with a dedicated crew, excellent guidance, and responsive leadership will steer a successful course. General Motors recognized Classic Chevy as a 2010 GM Dealer of the Year...an honor only given to the top two percent of Chevrolet dealers in the region. Not only that, but Classic Chevrolet in Sugar Land has placed first out of fiftythree dealers in order to win the Chevrolet Service Hero Award for the third straight quarter. These aren’t awards given for short-term success in sales and customer satisfaction. Classic Chevrolet also demonstrated excellence in customer retention and in a continuous commitment to training. At first glance, Classic Chevrolet exceeds expectations, but when you think of the progress made over the last two and a half years, this dealership is an incredible example of the rewards of thoughtful planning, good business practices, and a commitment to excellence. Don says, “We never forget that the keys to our success are hard work and customer satisfaction. I know everyone here takes personal pride in doing our best to earn your trust. We will hold the course!” Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land 13115 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77478 Sales: (866) 498-5485 Service: (866) 500-1660

Is It Hot in Here?

Sarah Warburton hen everyone else is reaching for a jacket and you’re peeling off the layers, when even the thought of a hot cup of coffee makes you sweat, when losing your cool can happen at any moment...you know all about the hot flashes of menopause. Dr. Leslie Cohan of The Woman’s Place says, “Many women experience menopausal symptoms like night sweats, mood swings, depression, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, vaginal dryness, incontinence, loss of sex drive, and changes in skin tone. Hot flashes are just the tip of the iceberg! If you feel the ‘change’ has come, it’s time to assess your overall health. I want to start by saying that menopause is not a disease; it’s a natural biological process that occurs (on average) around age fifty. Usually we diagnose menopause after you’ve missed your period for twelve consecutive months...but it’s good to come in for a check-up if you’ve missed several periods. Other conditions can affect your menses, so I may check things like your thyroid function or prolactin level. When you go through menopause, your level of reproductive hormones––especially estrogen––goes down. Severe symptoms may stem from extremely low estrogen, which also increases the risk of osteoporosis, bone fractures, and cardiovascular disease (such as myocardial infarction and stroke). I recommend a daily dose of 1000 IU of vitamin D along with 1200 IU of calcium to strengthen bones and improve cardiovascular health. Another solution may be hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Most misinformation about hormone therapy stems from a 2002 study by the Women’s Health Initiative that seemed to link HRT to breast cancer and heart problems…but that study focused on women whose age averaged 62 years old. Healthy women in their fifties who start HRT immediately after menopause enjoy better sleep, better sex, better complexions and fewer hot flashes. I also offer HRT using

W

transdermal estrogen and vaginal estrogen…eliminating the need for the estrogen to make a ‘first pass’ through the liver. Taking care of women through every stage of life is at the heart of my profession. When menopause turns up the heat, come see me and we’ll figure out how to keep you cool...and healthy!” The Woman’s Place (affiliated with the Woman’s Hospital of Texas) 713-795-0349 16552 Southwest Freeway Sugar Land, TX 77479 http://drcohan.womanshealthgroup.com/

Get Ready, Get Set, Get Clean!

Cara Smith re you ready for the holidays? Thanksgiving is officially just around the corner, which means, quite likely, that you’re preparing for company—and a huge meal. And while it’s supposed to be a time of thanks, I usually find myself melting down at some point or another, completely overwhelmed by the task ahead of me. So why not eliminate at least one source of the holiday stress? “For so many people, frantically cleaning is the straw that breaks the camel’s back—and it shouldn’t have to be that way,” says Max McCammond, our local cleaning expert and owner of Professional Maid Service. Max’s professional maids are only a phone call away, and they’re ready to whip your home into shape. Max has been at this awhile, so his stan-

A

dards are high—really high. All his employees are bonded and insured, and they come to your home uniformed, in a company car, so you’ll know exactly who’s there. And professional is the watchword. They’re courteous, on time, and they’ll do the job exactly how you want it done. So take a deep breath, and let someone else do the heavy housework; you’ve got enough on your plate (quite literally!) with a Thanksgiving meal to prepare. It’s time to call in the professionals, and time to start grocery shopping! Professional Maid Service 281-342-6500 www.professionalmaidservice.com

Cleaning to the “Max”

We all know what a roasting pan looks like after a 6-hour date with a turkey—and how daunting the prospect of cleaning it is. A simple way to loosen up that grease? It’s in your laundry room, believe it or not. “When a friend of mind recommended it, I didn’t think it would work,” says Max, “but it turned out to be a sure thing—a dryer sheet!” Fill up that pan with water to let it soak, and toss in a dryer sheet. The grease will be softened up in no time.

amily visits and holiday festivities fill your home with laughter and your heart with memories... but what are they doing to your plumbing? Master Plumber Alan Burkhalther says, “Huge holiday meals, extra helpers in the kitchen, and heavier use in your bathrooms and showers mean that the holidays can be hard on your plumbing. Over the last fourteen years in Fort Bend, we at Alan’s Plumbing have seen every kind of holiday plumbing problem... and we’ve got a few tips to make this season a little easier for you!” What’s the most common holiday plumbing problem? Alan says, “You wouldn’t believe what people try to stuff down the garbage disposal. Please remember — it’s not a ‘magic hole’ that makes trash disappear. Chicken and turkey bones don’t sharpen the blades in your disposal…they’re like throwing a monkey wrench into the works. And the peels from your mashed potatoes with gravy can turn into starchy glue in your drain. Many disposals really can’t grind stringy and fibrous things like potato peels, turkey or chicken skin, celery, onion skins, or pumpkin pulp. Save the disposal for the harmless

mess you rinse off the plates and save yourself from a holiday plumbing disaster!” Are the kids home from college or are the cousins visiting for a week? Spacing showers throughout the day (or at least waiting ten minutes between showers) will give your hot water heater a chance to catch up. And if you really don’t want to scald Grandma or freeze Uncle Jim, consider running the dishwasher and washing machine at night…that’ll keep your water temperature and pressure nice and even during peak shower times. What’s one of the best things you can do to holiday-proof your plumbing? Call Alan’s Plumbing in to fix any little problems before the season even gets started...and keep their number by the phone, just in case. Alan, Jennifer, their three sons—Beau, Luke, and Jake—and brothers Chris and Brian, too wish all of Fort Bend a happy, healthy Thanksgiving and good times with family! Whether you’ve got a leak, a clogged pipe, or need to replace a hot water heater, or a toilet reset...just call 281-261-1064.

are you living with rheumatoid arthritis? R Sarah Warburton

heumatoid arthritis (RA) afflicts an estimated 1.3 million people in the US...and almost three times as many women as men. Orthopedic specialist, Dr. Mark Vann, MD, says, “Even younger people like those in their early twenties can get RA. It usually starts in the small joints like the hands and feet before moving to the larger ones. RA is different from the more common osteo-arthritis, because RA is actually an auto-immune disease. Essentially, the body attacks itself, causing inflammation.” If you have RA, you may already be under the treatment of a rheumatologist, but you’ll want other specialists like Dr. Vann on your team. Dr. Vann says, “Initially, the problems caused by RA can be managed conser vatively. Rheumatologists have a range of ways like DMARDs (diseasemodifying antirheumatic drugs) to reduce inflam-

mation, modify the disease, or put it into remission...before RA causes deformities. When RA begins to affect the structure of the foot and cause deformities, I can offer further conservative treatments...as well as a range of possible surgical solutions if that deformity or the pain increase.” Surgery can provide pain relief and make it easier to be active again. Dr. Vann says, “The type of surgery we use depends on whether RA has deformed the hind foot, the middle of the foot, the toes, or the joints. New surgical reconstructive techniques have just been developed that can salvage the joints. Having a range of different solutions for problems of the foot and ankle allows us to choose the best option for you and your lifestyle.” Do you need help stepping back into life? Dr. Vann says, “The field of orthopedics is always changing…that’s the excitement and the challenge. Know that I’ll always put your comfort and health first as we work together to find a solution.”

Before the Heat is On

on’t turn on the heat if you haven’t had your furnace checked out first. That’s a basic safety rule that we all need to remember this time of year. We asked Chance Kamp and Bryan Bellamy, owners of All Out A/C and Heating, about the hidden dangers of turning on your furnace. Heater maintenance isn’t just about efficient and trouble-free operation...it’s a matter of safety. Bryan says, “Improperly maintained

Heater maintenance isn’t just about efficient and trouble-free operation...it’s a matter of safety. heaters can jeopardize the health and even the life of your family. When we send our guys out, they check things like filters and connections to make sure your furnace is running well. More importantly, they also check for holes or wear in your system’s heat exchanger or fire box, malfunctioning safety controls, the carbon monoxide content of the combustion chamber, and any condition that might create a fire risk or a carbon monoxide leak. Since carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless gas, our trained technicians use a carbon monoxide detector to see if your furnace has danger spots. I strongly recommend both a seasonal inspection of

your furnace by a professional as well as a carbon monoxide detector for your home. Even in small doses, this gas can be lethal!” Want a little extra peace of mind? Sign up for an “All Out Comfort Membership” and you’ll get preventative maintenance from All Out’s professionals twice a year. As an added bonus, if your furnace or air conditioner needs repairs while you’re an “All Out Comfort Member,” the service call and diagnostics fee will be waived...that’s a “Fee-Free Guarantee!” Bryan says, “People are surprised to learn that regular maintenance can double the life of your system. That’s like getting two air conditioners and furnaces for the price of one! Not only that, but regular maintenance makes your systems more efficient, which keeps you more comfortable and lowers your utility bills! We feel so strongly about the importance of seasonal maintenance that we offer front-of-the-line appointments and an additional ten percent off all our services during your ‘All Out Comfort Membership.’” All Out A/C and Heating 281-238-9292 626 Highway 90A Richmond, TX 77406 www.alloutacandheating.com
