s it the place you grew up? Is it the place where you’re raising your kids? No matter where you hang your hat, home is where the heart is. For Richard Machemehl and Scott Crain, owners of Home Theater Evolutions, there’s no question that Sugar Land’s home. Friends since the third grade, they share a lifelong obsession with electronics. Richard says, “You don’t outgrow loving electronics...Scott and I are living proof of that!” Scott says, “Helping people find just what they need in our own store is a dream come true…and now my son Sean and Richard’s son Nicholas are friends, too!” After school, Scott worked as a firefighter and paramedic with the city of Houston, and Richard worked with electronics in the Air Force and studied engineering at Texas A&M…but as soon as they could make it happen, they struck out on their own. Scott says, “We started off in 2003 doing only in-home custom installation of electronic equipment…but more and more of our customers asked our advice on which products to purchase.” Richard adds, “Ever since we started offering electronics back in 2005, we’ve handpicked every item for quality and value to make life easy for our customers. We put everything down on the estimate so you won’t have any surprises or hidden fees. We really want to help people decide on the right products for their home, their space, and their budget.” Secretly, every guy knows that home is where your big screen TV lives. Does your Dad have everything he needs for a Father’s Day to remember? Hook him up with the perfect backyard accessory…an outdoor plasma screen from Home

Theater Evolutions with natural color tones, incredible contrast, crisp picture, and wide viewing angles to see the Astros in high-definition. Maybe Dad wants high-end speakers from Dali or a slim-line LED TV. Richard says, “We have options for internet radio, like the new Sonos music system with a wireless mesh network and ZonePlayers. Dad could play music from his iPod or CD player, his MP3s or iTunes library, or online music providers like Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, or Sirius…as well as over 100,000 radio stations, shows and podcasts!” Scott says, “Our team loves electronics just as much

as we do. Come walk around our showroom, tell us what you need, and we’ll help you find the perfect match!” What’s the mark of a true friend? Someone you’d want to see on your days off! Richard and Scott and their families are enjoying a little well-earned R&R on a Disney Cruise this month. Don’t worry...our local theater experts will be home again before you know it! Richard and Scott say, “If you don’t see us in the store, we’re either out on a job, or out with our families. 20 AWARD 11 PATIENTS’

CHOICE

This Is to Certify That

Dr. Ulises Baltazar Has Been Selected As One of Texas’ Favorite Physicians

The Passion of a Lifetime Would you ask your dentist to treat your bunions or go to a psychiatrist when you need a neurosurgeon? Not if you want the job done right! When you’ve got varicose veins, you need a doctor who specializes in veins...and that’s Vascular Surgeon Dr. Ulises Baltazar, MD, winner of the 2011 Patients’ Choice Award. He’s been board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery for over a decade. He says, “At Sugar Land Vein Specialists, I have one professional passion... making sure your veins are working properly so you’ll feel and look your best! If varicose veins are making your legs tired and sore, if you’re self-conscious about the way they look and uncomfortable standing or staying active, why wouldn’t you go to someone who actually specializes in veins? “Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic problem, they’re a vascular health problem,” says Dr. Baltazar. “When the valves in your veins are unhealthy, blood can then flow backward and pool inside the vein, so it swells...leading to venous diseases like spider veins, varicose veins and venous stasis ulcers.” After earning his medical degree at La Salle School of Medicine in Mexico City, Dr. Baltazar did his General Residency at East Tennessee State University, where he was both the Administrative Chief Resident and won the Outstanding Resident in General Surgery award. This was the moment when he could have chosen any surgical speciality at all...but he knew his passion. Dr. Baltazar says, “I couldn’t resist the caliber of technology and precision used in vascular surgery... and when I did my Vascular Surgery Residency at Baylor College of Medicine, I fell in love with Houston, too.”

While completing his Vascular Surgery Residency at Baylor, Dr. Baltazar served as Administrative Chief Resident and was awarded the Outstanding Resident in Vascular Surgery Award. He was one of the pioneers of endovascular surgery at East Tennessee State University, where he practiced before returning to Houston. Here in Texas, he performed the first case of Mechano-Chemical Ablation (MOCA). He’s had years of training, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the arteries and veins and extensive experience in placing needles, guide wires, using lasers, ultrasound and the latest technology and techniques.Varicose veins increase your chance of blood clots in the superficial system called thrombophlebitis and can be associated with potentially lethal clots in the deep system called deep venous thrombosis (DVT)...so it’s crucial to seek help from a specialist! When you or your family come to Dr. Baltazar, you’ll be getting personal care from a true expert voted by the hospital staff as the most supportive physician at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital in 2009 and chosen as the Patient’s Choice in 2011. You can visit his website to read testimonials from his many satisfied patients. Dr. Baltazar says, “I have a range of solutions with a single goal...to provide you healthy relief from varicose veins!”

f life is a highway, one dealership’s made the journey right. Don Kerstetter says, “When the dealership that stands at the corner of 59 and 90A took a wrong turn, we bought it and vowed to get it back on the road to success. Instead of a GPS, we used a solid moral compass to turn things around! Over the next three years, we’ve made big changes in the building...and even bigger ones in the way customers enjoy the dealership experience. We’d like to invite you to come along for the ride!” Although the road ahead was all uphill when Don opened Classic Chevrolet, he and his team put things into overdrive. Now Classic Chevy’s been named “GM Dealer of the Year” for the second year in a row, ranking in the top 2% of Chevrolet Dealers across the country in sales performance and customer satisfaction. Don says, “Turning things around has taken every single member of our team from service to sales. We’ve only got one chance to impress our customers. Being ranked among the top two percent of Chevrolet dealers nationwide means we’re on the right track.”

When you hit the road, it’s important to have the right passengers. Whether they’re helping you navigate or taking care of the tunes, good company makes a trip into a road trip. Don says, “Our team wears professional, casual attire that really invites you to ‘Relax and Enjoy the Difference.’ We look for good people who enjoy being involved in the community and take a friendly, laidback approach that’ll put you at ease!” What’s a road trip without a few stops to see the sights? Classic’s General Sales Manager Mark Kolon says, “Community involvement is a huge part of our mission here at Classic Chevrolet. We support a variety of worthy local causes ranging from the Arc Of Fort Bend and Child Advocates of Fort Bend to the Fort Bend Women’s Center and Toys For Tots. From local schools to youth sports leagues, we believe in getting out and getting to know our neighbors. We also want to thank all of you who supported our Second Annual Chili Cook-off. We raised more than $7500.00 for the Sugar Land Police Officer’s Association... and we look forward to seeing what

you’re cooking up for next year!” Will you and your family take a road trip this summer? Make Classic Chevrolet your first stop for service on your current vehicle or a new or “newto-you” car or truck. As the father of two kids, Don says, “All parents know that the car’s the best place to really talk with your kids. Our cars play a huge part in our memories. Whether you’re looking for your first car to take with you to college, a car to hold your growing family, or a car to drive in your golden years...we’re here to help you find the perfect ride.” Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land 13115 Southwest Freeway Sugar Land, TX 77478 Sales: (866) 498-5485 Service: (866) 500-1660

they couldn’t treat the problem...or go to St. Michael’s Emergency Room. Filled with relief she turned into the parking lot for St. Michael’s, knowing they were equipped to handle any emergency for any patient...and St. Michael’s had her covered! What does that mean for you and me? Dr. Shannon Orsak, Founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, says, “It’s the law: you must be reimbursed by your insurance carrier for your emergency room visit, whether the emergency room is “in network” or “out of network.” We at St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, Humana, and Medicare. What “accepting” these plans means to you: St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms will file the forms and deal with the insurance companies for you. We’re here to care for you from start to finish!” How do you know it’s an emergency? The state of Texas has adopted “the prudent lay person standard”...so if you think your symptoms are serious enough to go to an emergency room, then that constitutes an emergency. Are you going to get better sitting around an emergency waiting room? At St. Michael’s, you normally won’t wait longer than 15 minutes, and most patients don’t even finish their paperwork before they’re seen by a physician. Dr. Orsak says, “We’re a licensed freestanding emergency room, with board-certified physicians. We have X-ray, Ultrasound and CT, and an on-site diagnostic

athleen Turner. Venus Williams. Phil Mickelson. Nick Cannon. These famous people have all recently gone public with their personal struggles with different autoimmune diseases. “As these celebrities raise awareness,” says Dr. J. Edward Hernandez, M.D. at Fort Bend Rheumatology Associates, “more people are being screened for diseases of the joints and soft tissues.” If you have undiagnosed pain or an autoimmune disorder, your primar y care physician may refer you to a rheumatologist for further evaluation. Dr. Hernandez and Dr. R yan Valicek will navigate the sometimes complex path to get to the bottom of your complaints. “After you and I talk,” says Dr. Valicek, “I’ll do the detective work and look back over your medical histor y to see if there are criteria that point to a diagnosis. Together we’ll discuss the risks and benefits of different treatment options. Most of these diseases are easily manageable, once they’re diagnosed.”

You won’t have to run all over town to get the tests you’ll need to diagnose and manage your disease. Fort Bend Rheumatology offers in-office blood draws, electronic medical records, and an on-site infusion center for IV medical therapy. A new peripheral MRI in their office and diagnostic ultrasounds make it possible for Dr. Hernandez and Dr. Valicek to diagnose problems like rheumatoid arthritis more quickly and comfortably for you. “Ultrasound is more sensitive than x-rays, more flexible and quicker than an MRI, and allows us to see signs of inflammation or damage in the joints. In the future, ultrasound will be used as a diagnostic tool by rheumatologists the way stethoscopes are used by cardiologists.” says Dr. Hernandez. Because this technique can be so beneficial to both patients and doctors, he has also been teaching other physicians in the Houston area about it.

Fort Bend Rheumatology Associates are dedicated to solving the mystery of your aches and pains. They are participating in multiple clinical trials on diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and gout – all in conjunction with the Houston Institute for Clinical Research and other rheumatology specialists in the area. “Staying informed of the latest discoveries is crucial in understanding and managing autoimmune diseases,” says Dr. Hernandez. rowing up as a child in rural Oklahoma as one of eleven children, Johnny Jackson didn’t have the luxury of air conditioning, so he tried other ways to cool off. Lying in the shade, swimming in the swimming hole, or trying to work up a breeze galloping on his favorite horse. Little did he know where he’d end up! After four years in the Air Force as an air craft mechanic and twenty years with National Cash Register (which brought him to Sugar Land) Johnny started Jackson Air Conditioning in 1982. Johnny says, “We learned early on that there was a big difference in quality and reliability in air conditioners. We soon teamed up with another Texas company, Trane out of Tyler, TX. Trane has the quality, reliability and technology needed in the hot humid Texas summers, and that keeps our customers comfortable, safe and happy...and today we’re

the oldest Trane dealer in Sugar Land.” Like father, like son! As a teenager, Brian Jackson worked alongside his dad learning about the business from the ground up. Thirty years after his dad founded Jackson Air, Brian is proud to say “Our commitment to customer service remains the same, We believe in treating the customer right and doing what ever it takes to make them happy. This is why most of our new customers are referred by existing customers. This philosophy has made Jackson Air winners for the second year in a row of the BBB Award of Excellence and the Angie’s List Super Service Award. Today it’s not just about cooling and heating...it’s also about energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Getting a new, high efficient Trane air conditioner can deliver significant savings on your energy bills with lower humidity to keep your family comfortable all summer long.”

Johnny Jackson & Champ, 1951 Enjoy summer fun with your family...without worrying about your air conditioner! Brian says, “Your kids don’t have to suffer through the summer heat like my dad did! We’re offering up to $2250 in instant rebates or zero percent financing on a new Trane system. Who Says

Cowboys

Don’t Drink

Good

Wine? Sarah Warburton

Joe Braman is an honest-to-goodness true Texas cowboy, ranching, roping, and surviving tussles with rattlesnakes...and he knows that Texans don’t just drink beer. When he met Ashly

Kubicek and Page Brockman through a real estate deal, they shared their vision of a true Texas winery, telling the story of Joe’s heritage through wine. In 2010 Braman Winery opened a tasting room in Refugio and two months ago they opened another right here in Richmond. Page says, “Joe and his wife Dee have two daughters, I have four sons, Ashly has a young son, and Joe agreed that this would be an amazing legacy to leave his family and ours. We’re developing a high end Legacy line, our b10 Series commemorates our founding year, our best-seller is our effervescent Braman Sparkles™ (especially our ready-to-drink Mimosa) and Joe’s dubbed our Fringe Benefits line: ‘No Snobs Allowed!’” You’re only twenty minutes away from relaxing with your friends on a deck under spreading pecan trees or marveling at the wall of wine bottles and browsing the shop at the Braman Tasting Room in Richmond; all beautifully decorated by Dee and Ashly. Sample these spectacular wines and buy them by the glass, the bottle, or the case. One of the best-kept secrets of native son Joe Braman is the legacy of culinary arts and wine pairings passed on to him by his beloved grandmother, Mary O’Connor Braman in Port O’Connor, Texas. The time they spent together was one part learning and one part love of all things culinary, especially the importance of wines and pairings. Her inspiration guided Joe through culinary school and some of the finest kitchens in the world. You can get a preview of Joe’s recipes on the website. If there’s one thing we know here in Texas, it’s how to get together and have a good time...and that’s the philosophy at Braman Winery. Now it’s simple to pair the perfect wine with your occasion––whether it’s chillin’ on the beach, celebrating an engagement, or raising a glass with friends. Better still, book the tasting room for your next event and give it that true Texas flavor. Page says, “We’re proud of our Texas heritage...and the legacy we’re creating at Braman Winery.” Braman Winery 281-762-1375 3333 FM 359 • Richmond, TX 77406 www.bramanwine.com

hen his son, Shaun, was born, Bob McKelvey, was doing carpet cleaning and removal. Fast forward a couple decades and today Shaun works at the desk directly next to his dad’s. Bob says, “He really followed in my footsteps, starting out in the cleaning and restoration side of things, then moving into the showroom with his mom. His younger brother Steven’s got other interests, so it’s wonderful to know Shaun’s here to continue the family business. I’m more likely to go out to homes and do estimates, and Shaun’s strength is his eye for color, his sense of design, and the way he interacts with customers...they just love him!” This time of year when homes are going up for sale and families are

heading out of town, it’s nice to know there’s one company that offers reliable turnkey service. Bob says, “As flooring inspectors, my wife Renee and I learned that about ninety percent of problems are caused by faulty installation. We only use installers we know and trust. I don’t double-book them, I won’t rush them, because I know your remodeling project literally depends on the excellent work they do. Vacation is a great time to let us remodel your kitchen, bathroom and flooring.” For over twenty years All About Carpet and Floors has been Fort Bend’s first choice for quality flooring, tile, and customer service. One repeat customer Donna Self says, “Back in 2002, my neighbor had some work done by All About Carpet. I liked what they’d done in her house, so I had them do tile work for us, too. Over the years, we’ve been nothing but happy with the work they’ve done. I hate to say this, but we did have some work done by a different place...and they didn’t do a good job. In fact, we’re still paying for that mistake!” “When we needed tile work done again this year, I thought about what a good job All About Carpet had done and went right back to them...a decade after my first visit to them. I’m very familiar with that shopping center, I knew they were still there. Since it’s a family-owned and operated business, I dealt with Bob and Shaun and talked with Renee again. We’ve been really impressed with the quality of their work from start to finish. Angel, who did the installation, is a real craftsman. It’s a major undertaking any time you do a home improvement project, so it’s important to get it done well!” Bob and Renee built All About Carpet from the bottom up... and they’re committed to making you happy for the long term. “After all,” says Bob, “we want you to give our name out to your relatives, friends, and neighbors. Come on in, meet Shaun, and chat about your plans. We’ve been here for over twenty years...isn’t it time you dropped by?” All About Carpet and Floors 281-265-3700 3145 Highway 6 South (next to Shipley’s) www.allaboutcarpet.com

reat family recipes are perfected over generations and Ruthie’s TexMex in New Territory knows it! Owner William Solis keeps true to his family heritage of deliciously fresh Tex-Mex food. “I grew up in Alief and attended the Naval Academy. I spent four years as a Naval officer and two as an engineer. When I had a chance to come into the family business, I took it! My parents, Jorge and Ruth, taught me everything…and now they’ve retired from the restaurant and I’m at the helm.” This fabulous local institution is a great place to go for authentic Tex-Mex food. You’ll find generous portions of all of your favorites….fajitas, tacos, enchiladas, burritos, flautas, and more. William says, “ We use one hundred percent Angus Beef...and we don’t marinate our fajita meat. I believe that lime juice breaks down the fibers in the meat to mask the flavor and disguise the cut. We use the best quality beef...and we like to show it off!” Feeling adventurous?

Venture off-menu for “William’s Platter,” an outside skirt steak with shrimp and avocado

on a bed of rice. William says, “It’s surf and turf done my favorite way!” Or try the La Tortuga (“turtle” in Spanish). It’s a skirt steak and chicken breast with large succulent shrimp, monterey jack cheese, ranchera sauce, and mushrooms, positioned to look like the head and feet of the turtle! All of the recipes were passed down from generation to generation in William’s family. It’s all made from the freshest produce and quality ingredient. Want to take the credit for discovering this local favorite? Ask Ruthie’s Tex Mex to cater your party, event, or family dinner. William

says, “We recently catered a fajita dinner for 750 people for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Marketing Committee….and I think our friends in New Territory would agree we’re a great choice if you want to pick up a to-go meal to share with friends!” “Come eat with our family today. Get Stronger, Leaner...Faster! Sarah Warburton hen did fitness become all about fancy gear and complicated workouts? With only vintage dumbbells and barbells, kettlebells, loops and ropes, anyone at any age and any fitness level can get fit...quickly! This isn’t a come-and-go gym where you’ll sip a smoothie and call it a workout. Art of Strength Sugar Land offers scheduled large group classes, small group classes of 2-3, and personal training. No matter what you choose, you will always have a trainer with you. Angie says, “We’ll always start our clients with a free 40 minute evaluation by a trainer. Our workouts are one-hour timed circuits. After you’ve gone through the first circuit of five exercises three times, we’ll quickly set up a new one for you. Usually we do three sets of three different circuits in each hour. Your trainer will explain the benefit of each exercise, so you won’t have to think...just enjoy the music and sweat!” The seriously fit––boxers, athletes, celebrities––have taken their workouts back to basics. Angie says, “The founder, Anthony DiLuglio, developed authentic, strength-building exercises that are both fun and effective! Lifting weights builds bone mass, as well as muscles. We want you to be stronger on the inside!” For cardio, you will use heavy ropes in the “Undulating Training System (UTS),” swinging them and moving them to work your core. The “Bandit’s Loops (ETS)” are loops suspended about a foot off the floor and used for rowing and planking. The UTS and ETS systems have been staples among NFL, NBA, NHL, and NCAA teams. The ropes (UTS) were named the “2009 New Cardio Tool of the Year” by Men’s Fitness magazine and are used on NBC’s “Biggest Loser.” After twenty years as a personal trainer in Sugar Land, Angie knew “Art of Strength” made sense. Fathers and Sons Above the Rest!

rom grandfathers to fathers to sons, some things stand the test of time. The future of America depends on dads teaching their kids core values like hard work, honesty, and the skills of a trade. At Alan’s Plumbing, you’ll find two generations of brothers working together for the families of Fort Bend. Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter, his two brothers, his three sons, and fellow team member Zach are proud of doing honest work for a fair price. When iron workers walk on the framework of a building under construction, it takes nerves of steel. They have to depend on each other every step of the way and the work they do has to stand the test of time. Whether you need a solid structure for a skyscraper or a solid plumbing system that won’t leave you soaked, you need a company you can trust. That’s the blood that runs through the guys at Alan’s Plumbing. Alan, Chris, and Brian’s grandfather was an ironworker who worked on the San Jacinto monument. He worked on construction and his grandsons and great-grandsons work with pipes and plumbing, but it’s still all in the family! You don’t have to look up to see that Alan’s Plumbing’s above the rest! This isn’t one of those “who-knows-whoowns-it” companies that’ll send some stranger to your house. Alan’s sons Beau, Luke and Jake have been riding the truck and doing the dirty jobs with their Dad and uncles since they were only eight or nine. Alan’s brothers and their fellow plumber Zach work together as a team, and Alan’s mother or his wife Jennifer will answer the phone when you call. As a family-owned and operated company, they keep their overhead low and pass those savings on to you. They won’t feed you some line to get through your front door. If Alan’s taught his sons anything,

it’s how to earn your business the old-fashioned way... by giving the best price on the good work they do. Want a solid family company you can trust? Dads, keep the number for Alan’s Plumbing in your wallet, and earn a reputation as “Mr. Fix-It”…with a single call.

A solid family you can trust.

Wasted money and wasted time in Washington won’t make you feel any better today. For a fix that actually makes sense, visit Back Pain Inter ventions Associated, PA (BPIA). Cleaning to the “Max” Max’s Cleaning Tip: You might say I got started in this business by helping out around the house as a child. Even little kids can put their dirty clothes in a hamper and make their beds each morning. Preschoolers love cleaning the kitchen with a spray bottle of water and a rag. Older kids can be trusted with the vacuum...and it’s a great way to make sure they pick up all their Legos, too! If all else fails, set the timer, put on some rockin’ tunes, and have an “all hands on deck” clean-a-thon. Even fifteen minutes of family speed-cleaning can make a big difference!

It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a beat-up wooden door or a fiberglass door in need of TLC. Getting the job done Rick’s way means getting the job done right! “Once I rescued a piano from a flooded basement, brought it out in pieces, and made it like new,” says Rick. “Today we’ll send our mobile refinishing vans right to your front door to make it like new...or even better! You can get the kind of craftsmanship you want with the convenience of our on-the-go approach. My teams complete the job in one day, on-site, rain or shine. We

have a systematic, tried-and-true approach to refinishing that really works.” If you check out Rick’s website or Facebook page, you’ll see his customers are on a first-name basis with their craftsmen... and some even take pictures of their “new” front door. You’ll have to see these “before” and “after” shots to believe how amazing the process can be! Rick says, “Our team really loves getting to know people and doing the job right. We’ll take your front door off its hinges, sand it, stain it, seal it and re-hang (with a new weatherstrip, if needed and new hardware if you have it), in just a few hours. Who Says Boys Won’t Sing? Sarah Warburton

T

hirty years ago, when Bill Adams wanted to start a boys choir in Fort Bend, the prevailing attitude was that boys didn’t want to sing…but he knew from personal experience that boys and music are a great combination. He says, “As a boy, I played football and was a jock...but music transformed my life. I sang with the Phoenix Boys’ Choir and I never forgot the feeling of empowerment that comes from crafting beautiful music.” As an adult, Bill worked for over twenty years as a child psychologist, but he made time to volunteer through HISD and the Houston Boys Choir. He says, “In 1982, when my wife Becky got a job at FBISD, Fort Bend didn’t have any kind of boys choir. I approached the school board to help underwrite our rehearsal space. Now we have one of the largest Boys Choirs in the US (maybe in the world) with over 200 boys...and Fort Bend has been responsible for making it a success!” You might hear the Fort Bend Boys Choir at a Rockets or Skeeters game, a Rotary club meeting, or performing Carmina Burana with the Houston Symphony Orchestra in Jones Hall...but that’s not all! The Choir has sung for three Presidents and Pope John Paul II in the Sistine Chapel and has performed in many concert halls and cathedrals all over the world. And this month, they’ll be celebrating their thirtieth anniversary with a two-week performance tour to France...Bill says, “We love representing America and Fort Bend County abroad and at home! We did a wedding in November and the father of

the bride was the CEO of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He invited us to open the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo with the National Anthem every night this season. It gives our kids great pride to represent our country and our county at these worldclass events.” When the choir started to grow exponentially, Bill decided to devote himself to it full-time. He says, “The boys, their parents, and this community has been really enriching. Our kids are involved in scouts, their churches, sports, and community activities…but they love to work hard at the craft of music. Everyone who hears them is moved by the purity and power of their voices.” Fort Bend Boys Choir of Texas 281-240-3800 P.O. Box 2042 • Stafford, TX 77497-2042 wra@fbbctx.org www.fbbctx.org

Looking Out for Dad D

Sarah Warburton ad spends a lot of time looking out for others...running after kids on their first bike ride without training wheels, cheering on the sidelines of a soccer game, and chasing away any monsters under the bed. Sometimes Dad needs someone to look after him, too! If you notice him holding the newspaper out at arm’s length to read it, rubbing his temples and squinting at the computer, or hitting the highway without his sunglasses, his eyes might need a little help. If Dad really can’t see what’s right in front of him, Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source has the answer. She says, “As the lens of your eye becomes less flexible, it becomes harder to focus clearly on objects that are close. Many people develop presbyopia in their forties or later. Even celebrities like George Clooney, Steve Martin, and Jamie Foxx use reading glasses whether they’re reading scripts or contracts. If you don’t want bifocals, progressive lenses, or reading glasses, multifocal contacts lenses might work for you.” Does Dad work long hours on the laptop or pour over fine print? Maybe mental stress isn’t the only thing giving him a headache. Dr. Doan says, “Heavy computer use or close work stresses your eyes and can give you tension headaches. There are glasses specifically designed to reduce the effects of Computer Vision Syndrome. As a knitter myself, I know that close work like sewing, tying flies for flyfishing, and working on the computer can be really hard on your eyes, but the right glasses can reduce

eye strain and make life easier!” Forget the soap-on-a-rope or novelty tie, Dad deserves better this Father’s Day. Does he spend hours

commuting on the road to work, enjoy taking the kids to the pool, or squeeze in an early morning jog? Dr. Doan can point you to the best sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection and polarization and she can recommend the best frames for any activity. Take care of Dad’s eyes, so he can keep looking out for you! Dr. Anh Doan, O.D., Vision Source! 4725 Highway 6 South • 281-261-2647 www.visionsource-missouricity.com

Never Too Early for a Smile

W

hat’s one gift you can give your child now that will stay with them for the rest of their life? A beautiful smile! Dr. Gary Radford, the orthodontist at Little People’s Dentistry, works on smiles. He’s been doing it for years! Braces aren’t just for teenagers. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends children have their first orthodontic appointment around the age of seven, because once the six-year molars are in, they are used to anchor the orthodontics. The longer you wait, the more likely straightening will require more drastic measures like extraction. Are your child’s front teeth protruding? Besides being an aesthetics and self esteem issue, protruding teeth are a safety issue. If you break a protruding tooth and it’s fixable, it’s still protruding until you get braces, and odds are good that if it breaks again, it will be worse! Dr. Bianca Sanchez, owner of Little People’s Dentistry, tells the story of a child who shattered a front protruding tooth. “I was able to put the pieces back together, but he’ll need a root canal and a crown attached before we can even think about Dr. Radford doing braces!” Don’t think you can afford braces? During the month of June, Little People’s Dentistry is offering special discounts: $200 off the total treatment cost for patients with insurance and $500-$1000 off the total treatment cost for self-pay patients.

Dr. Sanchez says, “If you have insurance, your cost is set by the insurance company, so it’s the same no matter where you go….except Little People’s Dentistry is giving an additional discount!” In addition, they are offering zero percent interest financing for 30 months! Out of network for pediatric dental care? Little People’s Dentistry gives you the in-network price on most major insurance plans. Don’t have time for braces in your child’s busy summer schedule? Dr. Radford offers convenient Saturday appointments and now you can schedule appointments online. With the Little People’s Dentistry App (downloadable from iTunes or the Android store), you can request an appointment, get GPS directions, take a virtual tour, and get updates on events and special offers. hen Julio Garcia prepared to board a plane to America sixteen years ago, his grandfather told him, “From now on, I expect you to act like a man, not a boy.” Taking that message of responsibility to heart, Julio says, “I worked to be the best busboy...and my biggest dream was to become a server. Meanwhile, I graduated high school, and became a server, a bartender, a manager, and finally director of operations. I went to U of H and got my degree in Economics and Finance. I took over the Mia Bella at Vintage Park and then opened one here in Sugar Land. I’m at one of these two restaurants every day. I’m still the best busboy, I’m happy to challenge my staff and I love greeting our guests by name. This is my passion.” Anytime you see a jalapeño on an Italian menu, you know you’re dealing with something unique. Julio says, “At Mia Bella we’re inspired to share innovative, delicious Italian food with our guests. We offer a fixed-price lunch and our express menu makes it easy to enjoy a mid-day meal...and we hope you’ll come back with your friends at dinner or our award-winning brunch to enjoy our patio, our private wine room, and our atmosphere. Our Chef Youssef Nafaa is from Morocco and trained in Italy, he has a culinary degree from New York and opened restaurants in Chicago and Houston. I’ve seen him create a dish like our Pollo alla

Mia Bella with sautéed chicken breasts layered with a medley of sautéed vegetables, spinach, roasted red peppers and Portobello mushrooms, in a jalapeño cilantro pesto broth topped with goat cheese and roasted leeks. He’ll hand me the plate to taste and it’s good...but then he’ll add one last ingredient and it becomes great.” Trattorias are “Mom and Pop” places with a homey feel and family recipes... and that’s the welcoming spirit of Mia Bella Trattoria. Enjoy a bottle of wine with friends, then your server will take a black and white photo of you with the empty bottle to hang on the walls... and they’ll display your signed bottle on a shelf. o you remember the little boy who would stop in the middle of recess and stare up at the airplane flying overhead? Dana Atkinson, owner of Anson Aviation, was that boy. He was born into an airline family. His father was an executive for American Airlines and Dana’s earliest memories included many trips on airliners. Through everything that he did, aviation was always his passion. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering and from the University of Texas with a MBA. Soon after graduating, Dana earned his pilot’s license and finally let his passion take flight, at least for personal flying. He had several successful non-aviation careers, but never could shake the “genetic” urge to be around aviation full time. After returning from a foreign assignment, Dana began training and renting airplanes at Sugar Land Aviation, located at the Sugar Land Regional Airport. When the owners of Sugar Land Aviation decided that they wanted to retire, Dana recognized the opportunity of a lifetime. Miracle to Sell a House? Sarah Warburton

“I’m not going to tell you it’s the kind of miracle that will change your life, but it sure will change your kitchen or bathroom… without the time, mess, or expense of remodeling. That’s a miracle I can recommend!”

W

hen a house sits on the market for months and months, the answer could be as simple as a kitchen that’s “too pink” or a bathroom that looks “too eighties.” It’s not unusual for a good house to make the wrong first impression. Getting a fresh look doesn’t have to cost you tons of time and tons of money. Local homeowners and real estates agents know the secret to a house with appeal. It’s not a miracle...it’s the Miracle Method! Invest a little cash today and in next to no time you’ll get a big reward...an incredible improvement in the way your home looks and feels. Paul Barnett, co-owner of Miracle Method with his wife Jonee, says, “We can transform your porcelain, ceramic, laminate, acrylic, or cultured marble counters, showers, and sinks. The Miracle Method saves up to seventy-five percent over the cost of removing and replacing your old counters and comes with a five-year warranty to protect your investment... and that warranty’s transferrable to your homebuyers!” Maybe you think you’ll put the house on the market “as is,” before you even think about making any changes. Paul says, “We see it time and again. In fact, one of our clients put a house up for sale just as it was and sat there for six months. Then they got a new realtor who insisted the house needed some updates. We came in, redid the kitchen and the bathroom...and the house sold in two and a half weeks. Not only that, but they’d raised the list price, so even with the cost of redoing the kitchen and bathroom...they came out ahead! True story.” “I love this job,” says Paul, “especially helping the guys plan the work and seeing it all get done. Our guys are on time and keep to a schedule. In fact, right now we’re doing two bathrooms and a kitchen in one house...in just two days. Call us for your free estimate, give us just a few days, and we’ll give you a kitchen or bathroom that looks like new!”

Remembering a Legacy...and Building a New One Dominique Brooks

“…never give in,

never, never, never, never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense.” – Sir Winston Churchill, October 1941. Many people might be overwhelmed by having a world-famous relative or feel daunted by the responsibility. Jonathan Sandys rose to the challenge of being Sir Winston Churchill’s great-grandson...and continued his legacy of making a positive impact on the world. As a young man, the great-grandson of the former British Prime Minister was diagnosed with dyslexia and “my instructors told me that I would never achieve anything.” But Jonathan gathered courage from the knowledge he had of his great-grandfather and realized that he could use his own determination to achieve great things. Jonathan founded the Churchill’s Britain Foundation – renamed the International Churchill Foundation (ICF) this year – to pass on the history, life lessons, and leadership skills of the statesman, and to inspire the next generations. Next year, ICF plans to introduce a leadership course for teens and young adults. Since moving to the United States three years ago, ICF has collaborated with several prominent Houstonians including Joanne King Herring, Charles Foster, and Christina Girard.

As a public speaker; speaking mainly on the life and times of his great-grandfather, Jonathan has inspired individuals, businesses and organizations, and (closest to his own heart) middle and high schools kids. These speeches are a way to celebrate and share Churchill’s legacy...and to build a legacy for the next generation. “I am currently writing children’s books to introduce elementary students and above to the life and times of my greatgrandfather,” says Jonathan. He is also planning a speaking tour throughout the US and Jonathan Sandys, Chief Executive Europe, and the first Churchill Officer, International Churchill International Tour of Britain, Foundation covering Churchill’s life from birth to death...and a Champagne and Cigar Club in Houston! Jonathan has a little advice for others with big dreams and big fear: “Recognize that the road may be long, and that there are many bumps -- some you will hit. Trust in God and stay the course, taking advice only from those who have gone before you...all will be well.” For more information about Jonathan Sandys, visit www.churchillinternational.org

Compassion, Insight, and Love W e have a war on drugs in this country, one that now reaches halfway around the globe. Considerable time, money, and manpower have been directed toward eradicating poppy fields in Afghanistan and pot farms in Mexico, but there is little dialogue on how drug addiction and its counterpart, alcoholism, begin in the first place. Is there a way to prevent substance abuse early on? What is the best way to treat it? For 22 years John Robson, Chief Operations Officer at the Fort Bend Council on Substance Abuse, has sought to answer these questions. In fact, he has dedicated his life to finding solutions to this not-so-silent epidemic that breaks down families, communities, and of course addicts themselves. Compassion, insight, and love for the work are the qualities that make John successful at helping others. He is as comfortable counseling prison inmates as he is collaborating with elected officials. With over 31,000 nonviolent drug offenders in Texas prisons, he has plenty to do—and information to share. He says, “Hard statistics have proven that treatment works, at five thousand dollars, is more effective and costefficient than jail at fifteen thousand dollars annually. We can’t afford to keep incarcerating addicts.”

John Robson sees firsthand the powerlessness and despair of those who find themselves in the thrall of addiction. He is, in fact, a recovering addict himself with almost 30 years’ sobriety. “What starts out as a quick fix eventually turns on you. Pretty soon, using becomes the only way you feel normal. But when your loved ones are scared, that’s a warning sign—and it’s also a clear message to get help.” The personal costs of addiction in our community are staggering: 80% of CPS cases involve at least one substance-abusing parent. Prescription painkiller overdoses have tripled in the last ten years. “If you know someone who needs help or if you need help, call us,” John says. “At the Fort Bend Regional Council, we are dedicated to serving you.” Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse, Inc. 281-207-2400 10435 Greenbough, Suite 250 Stafford, TX 77477 www.fortbendcouncil.org/ jrobson@fortbendcouncil.org

Life’s a Wild Ride! “All our guys love talking about the ways you can accessorize your car, truck, or SUV. If Dad drives it, we can trick it out…and service it, too! Sarah Warburton

s a kid, Chance Kamp loved his Tonka trucks. Big, four-wheeling, indestructible Tonka trucks. When he grew up, he thought he’d have to settle for pushing those toys around the carpet with his own kids, but he found a way to make his childhood passion into his profession. He left those little Tonka trucks behind to spend all day with big ol’ MONSTER trucks. “I started All Out Offroad back in 1991 as one small store in a tiny building with a single service bay and one tinting area.” says Chance. “Soon after that, Gino Mindicta and Luke Richard, joined the team and it’s been a wild ride ever since! My biggest support has always been my wife, Laura...she allowed the big kid in me to remain a kid and supported my decision to make a life out of playing with trucks.” For over twenty years, the team at All Out Offroad’s locations in Richmond and Stafford has rebuilt vintage models and tricked out newer cars, trucks, jeeps, and SUV’s with the latest and greatest

accessories. Their skills with lift and lowering kits, tires, performance boosters, hitches, bed covers, window tint, audio, alarms, maintenance and more were put to the test on the hit CMT show “Trick My What?!” starring John Schneider and the team from the Richmond location’s “Lonestar Speed Shop.” If these guys can trick out asphalt rollers, logging skidders, and shrimp boats... imagine how they can make your everyday vehicle more efficient, practical, and straight-up awesome! Chance says, “All our guys love talking about the ways you can accessorize your car, truck, or SUV. If Dad drives it, we can trick it out…and service it, too!” Could playing with trucks be the most awesome job ever? The All Out Team sure thinks so... and their loyal customers agree! Chance says, “We’re very proud to announce the March opening of our newest location in Pearland at 2720 Westminister Street. We look forward to bringing our same high level of customer service and support to Pearland...and we hope to continue taking your ride to the next level for decades to come!”

Saving Money This Summer Sarah Warburton

T

he secret to saving money this summer is simple... make sure your air conditioner isn’t draining your bank account! If your bills keep climbing along with the temperature in your home, you need help from All Out A/C and Heating, your local “Full System Replacement Specialists” and winner of the 2012 BBB Award of Excellence - Winner of Distinction. Chance Kamp and Bryan Bellamy have assembled a team of experts to make it easier and more affordable to cool your home and save your paycheck...even in the hottest days of summer! Just because your air conditioner is technically working doesn’t mean it’s doing its job right. An old, inefficient unit or poorly planned duct work will raise your bills...without lowering the temperature in your home. Bryan says, “When you’ve got hot spots in your home, humidity that just won’t quit, and energy bills that keep climbing, your system isn’t pulling its weight anymore. A new air conditioner with a better SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) makes it easier and less expensive to cool down your home and can save up to 50% on your energy bill! We also offer zoning systems that keep you from paying to cool areas of your home you don’t use and programmable thermostats that can reduce your cooling costs by up to 25%.” Doing the math makes it simple; a new air conditioner that saves up to 50% on your energy bill will pay for itself over time...especially since you’ll also get up to $1200 in instant rebates or zero percent interest for thirty-six months. Bryan says, “If you’ve got an older, inefficient unit, you’ll be paying for it on your energy bills. Why not put that money toward a new system with a ten-year warranty and keep your family comfortable even during the hottest days of summer? As a Ruud Top Contractor, we’ve got great deals that make this the perfect time for a new system.” You don’t have to wait for a total system failure to call the “Full System Replacement Specialists.” Call All Out AC for your free in-home estimate on a system replacement and enjoy saving money this summer!
