Virginia Tech Interior Design Portfolio

INTRODUCTION

Hi! My name is Nicole Castro and I’m a third year interior design student at Virginia Tech. I have always been passionate about design and It’s ability to impact the many aspects of our lives. Growing up I have always been conscious of my surroundings and always had an appreciation for the spaces I walk in. I believe that interior design is no longer solely about aesthetics. In recent years the psychological aspects of interior design have been investigated in more depth. Human-centric design strategy has become vital in the production of functionally successful spaces. I enjoy being able to understand the pshycological aspect of curating a space and applying that passion to my projects.

Outisde of studio I enjoy a lot of reading, hiking and learning how to cook new dishes.

CO-FLOW

Co-Working Space

Fall 2022 | 8 weeks | 7,500 SF |Roanoke, VA

This 8 week project based in Roanoke, Virginia helped us understand the trends and factors impacting design of an essential contemporary workplace typogology: coworking. This complex becomes a dynamic coworking space inspired by Landor and Fitch, a graphic design company that revovles around being bold and creating new experiences. As a company that revolves around being bold and diverse it was important to drive that into the concept.

DJIGUI

Fall 2022 | 1 week | South East Burkina Faso

Team Project with Bethany Miles, Abby Kelican, and Kiersten Godfrey

Enscape, Photoshop, Revit

An IDEC competition, this group project required us to create a temporary sheltered enviroment for refugees to feel safe and psychologically sound using no more than 50 square meters. We developed a scenario by creating a journey map and user story for either a small group of refugees or a single refugee. Approaching us to design from necessity, being considerate of native objects and materials in mind.

Djigui, meaning “Hope” in Mòoré, is a refugee shelter that evokes safety, security, and wellbeing for the Burkinabe people. The overall design is based on a modular system centered around the continuity and connectivity of elements, that is representative of the people of Mossi and their strong community values. Djigui aspires to bring security to its occupants by creating a strong sense of privacy through visual disclosure while working with the separation of public vs. private sectors is minimal and simplistic design allows for adaptability among an area of uncertainty.

Design Narrative

The Belem family of six, a single mother and her five children, have migrated from central Burkina Faso, to the Southwest region of the country. With the Mossi people being the largest ethnic group in Burkina Faso, they are known to be a strong group capable of preserving their identity and social structure, even against the most powerful forces. Due to the strong values of family placed throughout Mossi’s society, their culture thrives off cohesiveness which their shelters intend to provide. While occupying this shelter, the Belem family will sustain ongoing relations with other Mossi community members who have traveled to Southwest Burkina Faso in search of the same opportunities. Their new habitat will help aid the Belem family as they navigate life under unfamiliar environmental conditions by providing both security and growth through the cohesiveness of their community.

The Magic Kitchen

Spring 2022 | 8 weeks | Miami, FL

Sketch-Up

The design mission is to consider a response to the current meal service enviroments serving and picking a food challenged community and we are asked to develop a forward thinking and uplifting design (re)vision of those service enviroments.

The design goal is to propose an interior design experience that both elevates the spirit and addresses the physical, psychological and emotional needs of customers affected by food insecurities.

For the color scheme It was important to use colors that represented Miami so I decided on choosing the main colors to be green and orange which are the primary colors of the Miami flag. Orange is said to represent the orange industry for which florida is famous for ; the green is for the lush tropical foliage of the city.

For the mezzanine the goal is to show progession in space, so that the space doesn’t feel overwhelming at first. I choose to emulate the feeling of progession within the space because the purpose is for one to feel like they can grow from their situation. Creating an enviroment that has a great connection within each space so the overall flow of the space feels unified and not disconnected. Generating a deeper dialogue so one can feel connected to themselves and society instead of feeling disconnected and insecure.
