A WORD FROM OUR LTG Hello Hippos! If you haven’t already heard the news, we have already established next term’s Lieutenant Governor, who will be installed on April 13th! I am excited to work with him and have already started showing him how to do next year’s job, so as to make transition much easier on all of us. Last year at Conclave, I remember bawling my eyes out. I hope those of you who attended Conclave had an exciting time – similar to New Year’s, Conclave is a time to celebrate new beginnings, so hopefully nobody cried too much! There is not much news right now, but I hope you can all join us at this month’s DCM, which will be held on the 15th at Mission Bay Park at the Jump Start Your Heart 5K! We’ll be volunteering at the post-Valentine’s Day run, so hopefully you can join us! On another note, most of you should have started your second semesters by now. Remember, that just because the year is halfway over, doesn’t mean you can slack off! Prepare for those APs and IBs so you can get college credit! To seniors: BEE on the lookout for scholarships so you can help supplement your tuition fees for next year. Textbooks are EXPEN$IVE! BEE a good kid and help out whoever is paying your tuition by earning some quick and easy scholarship! Have a GOLDEN month, Hippos! Nicklas Lee Division 21 Lieutenant Governor

TECH EDITOR’S CORNER Hey Hippos, I can feel the term coming to an end and it saddens me a little. Out with the old and in with the new, I suppose! Hope you hippos find that certain Valentine on the way with Cupid’s help. Hope you all are doing well in school because second semester is a new start for everyone! No more hovering over final grades! Remember to finish the year off strong now that there’s a fresh new start! Stay Frosty, Estella Hoang 3

Ice Skating Fundraiser DERECK LAU What better way to kickstart the new year than to watch your friends humiliatingly fall on their bottom as they struggle to ice skate? Kiwanis hosted an ice skating event January 3 at the San Diego Ice Arena with local Division 21 clubs to fundraise for the ELIMINATE Project. At 7 AM, early bird key clubbers stood out front of the arena to line up for their tickets. By 7:30 everyone filed in, grabbed their skates, and headed for the arena. Everyone got off to a rocky start, but soon as the DJ arrived, darkness flooded the ice, neon lights lit up the floor, and booming music lighted up the atmosphere filling the arena with fun, friends, and people falling on their bottom. Skating is not easy. However, booming music lifted the atmosphere. After the zamboni smoothed out the ice again, a snowball fight ensued. Hordes of snowballs rained down on opposing teams as people ran for their lives with their futile attempt to escape the massacre. What better ways to kick start the New Year than to watch your friends humiliatingly fall on their bottom as they struggle to ice skate? On January 3rd, Kiwanis hosted an ice skating event at the San Diego Ice Arena with local Division 21 clubs to fundraise for the ELIMINATE Project. At 7 sharp, early bird key clubbers stood out front of the arena to line up for their tickets and by 7:30 everyone filed in, got their entrance stamp (which was a cool yin yang symbol), grabbed their skates, and headed for the arena. Everyone got off to a rocky start, but soon as the DJ arrived, darkness flooded the room, neon lights lit up the floor, and booming music lifted the atmosphere filling the arena with fun, friends, and people falling on their behind. Skating is not easy; trust me after my many attempts. Luckily the pro skaters were kind enough to lend a helping hand and give advice. After the zamboni smoothed out the ice again, a snowball fight ensued. Hordes of snowballs rained down on opposing teams as people ran for their lives with their futile attempt to escape the massacre. The fight would get intense with friends betraying friends for other teams. A sneak attack with someone shoving snow down your shirt was not unlikely. After fellow key clubbers tired out their feet from the strenuous effort to skate, they would hit the vending machines for a hot chocolate or mocha or to simply take a break and chat with other members. All in all, the evening was a hit. Key clubbers were able to reunite with old friends, meet new friends, and have fun all at the same time.

On January 11th, a canyon clean-up at Rose Canyon located across from University City High School was held. Over

twenty members attended! The event was held from 9pm-12pm. Team leaders were picked and groups assigned as well, each group was assigned a task by Ranger Janice, who supervised the clean-up. Tasks assigned were along the lines of trimming overgrown branches, raking leaves out of the way, picking up trash and etc. We were able to aid Ranger Janice in her efforts to keep the canyon clean and safe for locals who normally run or bike on the trails. I enjoyed spending time with my fellow Key Club members and creating a clean, outdoor environment that the locals can enjoy!

Patrick Henry Elections AILEEN LEE Elections! With the Key Club year drawing to a close soon, it’s the perfect time to start elections for the 2014-2015 term. Patrick Henry Key Club started the election process on December 19th, holding nominations for each position on the board—President, Vice -President, Treasurer and Secretary. During this special Key Club meeting, lots of dedicated and ambitious members stepped up to the plate and ran for a position or nominated the people who they thought would be most adequate. A total of 19 people ran for positions: 7 for President, 3 for Vice-President, 5 for Secretary and 4 for Treasurer. Over the two-week winter break, candidates were encouraged to prepare a two-minute speech in order to showcase their talents, their abilities and their qualifications for each position. On Thursday, January 9 th, the speeches and voting commenced! After each candidate had an opportunity to share their speech, members casted their votes. By the end of the school day, all the votes had been accounted for. Congratulations President-elect Dereck Lau (11) and Vice-President elect Jonathan Chau (9)! They will be representing Patrick Henry as voting delegates at Division 21’s Conclave. On January 16th, speeches and voting for Treasurer and Secretary took place. But this time – results were ambiguous. While our Kiwanis members informed us that there was a winner for secretary, there happened to be a tie for Treasurer! A runoff for the candidates of treasurer Genovese Le (10) and Kathy Ha (9) will be held after Conclave. Congratulations Brianna Pinto (10) for becoming Patrick Henry’s Secretary-elect! With elections almost completed, Patrick Henry hopes to have a bright new future ahead of them. More goals, more service and

5 more fun!
