A WORD FROM OUR LTG Hello Hippos! I hope you have had a wonderful winter break full of holiday cheer and celebration of the New Year. Now is around the time that many make New Year’s Resolutions… Whether to eat healthier, to get better grades, or to get in better shape, remember what you have learned in Key Club and make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T. goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. In addition, BEE sure that you stick to your goals, so that next year you will not have to make the same “resolution.” I am keeping this short because I know you’re probably trying to finish up the rest of your homework while you’re still on vacation, but I would just like to say I hope you all have a wonderful time for the remainder of your break – especially if you are attending the ice skating fundraiser on the third! I won’t be able to make it, but I know you will all have a great time regardless. Happy New Year! Nicklas Lee Division 21 Lieutenant Governor

PAST EVENTS Grantville-Allied Gardens Kiwanis Christmas Tree Lot KATHY DOAN

Around this time of year, Grantville-Allied Gardens Kiwanis, the sponsors of Patrick Henry Key Club, set up their non-profit Christmas tree lot. Because it is non-profit, all of the proceeds from the Christmas trees go directly back to the community, which includes Patrick Henry! Every year, SDSU Circle K, Lewis Middle Builders Club, and Patrick Henry Key Club team up to lend our sponsors a hand. Key Clubbers head down to the tree lot whenever they can and assist with various duties. When a family has chosen their perfect tree, they call for assistance; two volunteers would come and carry the tree to the front of the lot for the family to take home! Trees also sometime needed watering or rearranging. If the lot were particularly busy one day, trees would also need to be restocked and untied. Volunteers also served as greeters at the entrance. When a family enters the tree lot, they would be greeted with a cheerful, “Welcome!, and the families would automatically smile! When temperatures dropped during the night, Kiwanians would set up a fire pit for everyone to keep warm. Kiwanians even got to roast marshmallows one night; it was super fun. It is certainly rewarding when helping at the tree lot, especially one that belongs to our sponsors. At this time of year, we should be very grateful for all that they do and one way to show our gratitude was by volunteering at the Christmas tree lot.

Madison’s Academic League Quizbowl Tournament FRANK TO

Madison High School’s second Academic League Quizbowl Tournament, Warhawk II, was held on December 7, 2013. Volunteers came as early as seven in the morning to help set up for the tournament. Volunteers helped by setting up the rooms; they moved chairs and tables around. They also set up the buzzers and made sure that everything would run smoothly. Runners were needed to bring in the score sheets to the room so the people could but in the statistics. The volunteers helped with that as well. The volunteers got a lot done that day. Overall, the tournament was a great success. Madison’s Academic League was able to fundraise lots of money to support their club. This could not have been without the volunteers and their diligent work. According to the advisor of Academic League, the volunteers did a great job and the tournament ran smoothly. Good job Key Clubbers! Also, thanks to Scripps’ Key Club member, Julie Tran, for helping out.

PAST EVENTS Ugly Sweater Run JASMINE CHUNG

On November 30th , Madison Key Clubbers put on their ugliest sweater to volunteer at the annual Ugly Sweater Run. The run is approximately 3.1 miles long; the start line had a huge Santa, Christmas tree, and snow globe inflatable. The entire park was decorated with holiday spirit, including the racers decked out sweaters! It felt like Christmas already, but in November. Volunteers gathered at 7:00 A.M. to help out at this event. Waking up early in the morning on a Saturday was a drag but as the day progressed it became really enjoyable. First, we had volunteers check in and received a free Santa hat. Then we were split into groups to handle different tasks such as registration, hot chocolate station, or cheerers. At the registration booth, volunteers had to scan forms with a single iPad as each runner checks in. This was a very slow process, but with leadership skills, these volunteers thought of a better plan than the original. Instead of scanning the registration forms one by one, which caused a major slow down, the volunteers thought of a great idea to collect every form and scan each one once the runners lined up at the finish line. Our members also helped set up the hot chocolate table, where runners were able to get warm drinks before the walk began. At the event, there was a certain Christmas tree that had boxes that collected toys for Toys for Tots. This is a great non-profit organization that the community could contribute too. After all the registration was done the volunteers had to clean up and start to cheer for the racers. The holiday 5k awarded runners for their best real mustache, best fake mustache, best beard, worst sweater, and best sweater. The event was definitely fun and we loved how friendly all of the event coordinators were! Especially the guy who let my friends and I go in the inflatable snow globe before anyone else. The best part about participating in this event was to know that our actions were helping the community.

CTC DAVID LE Candidate Training Conference (CTC) was an amazing experience for me. I was able to see how important a Lieutenant Governor (LTG) is to a club and how much work they do for us. They will literally skip sleep just to turn in MRFs or plan events for us to go to. Lieutenant Governor of Division 31, Cecilia Li, inspired me so much and made my time at CTC amazing. She was the site coordinator of the event and even with her partner sick, she overcame her obstacles and continued to lead the workshops. I hope that in the near future, that I will become just like her.
