xisten algunas mentes cortas de visión que cuestionan la construcción de la carretera costanera aduciendo que solo será para beneficiar a unos pocos. Mucha gente no imagina los beneficios económicos y sociales que genera la construcción de una carretera, sobre todo, cuando conecta zonas con altos potenciales productivos, tanto en el marco industrial, comercial, turístico o agrícola de una nación.

Many people do not imagine the economic and social benefits that will be generated by the construction of this highway. It has a highly productive potential since it will connect industrial, commercial, tourist and agricultural areas in the nation.

The first stage of the coastal road lies between San Juan del Sur and Tola. ecenas de proyectos de inversión nacional y extranjera hacen fila a la espera que la carretera costanera, que en la actualidad se trabaja a nivel de terracería en su primera etapa de 34 km de derecho de vía (del Tramo III, que va desde el sector El Naranjo hasta el municipio de San Juan del Sur), dé a conocer un cronograma de construcción, vital para la programación de las inversiones, aseguran expertos consultados.

“Hay proyectos de todo tipo esperando en fila: hoteles, centros comerciales, urbanizaciones, pero uno de los que más me gusta es un proyecto de escuela regional técnica que se instalará en Tola para graduar técnicos especialistas en manejo de alimentos, de bodega, asistentes de contabilidad, acabados en construcción, en electricidad, y una gran cantidad de técnicos medios que cuando hay mucha construcción se carece de este tipo de personal. Si ahorita todos los proyectos salieran juntos no hay suficiente mano de obra, y es de prioridad capacitarlos”, señala Raúl Calvet, presidente de Calvet & Asociados, compañía consultora líder en hotelería, turismo y desarrollo de proyectos inmobiliarios.

Calvet & Asociados contabiliza al menos 10 proyectos de inversión para Tola y que se sumarían a los 24 que ya existen. Para San Juan del Sur se registran dos proyectos que se unirían a los 160 ya establecidos. “La diferencia es abismal y la constituye en sí el pueblo de San Juan del Sur, que genera el atractivo turístico que no tiene Tola, ni tampoco El Astillero. Éstos dos (Tola y El Astillero) con asesoría podrían desarrollarse en pueblos turísticos y le daría a Tola un nivel como el de San Juan del Sur”, considera Calvet.

También señala que existen proyectos de inversión para Carazo y Managua. “Son menos pero hay. Esto incentivará nuevos proyectos, porque el acceso a los proyectos turísticos atrae la inversión”.

El experto comenta que la conexión entre San Juan del Sur y Tola es vital porque son los principales destinos de playa y unirá los puntos clave como el Aeropuerto Costa Esmeral-

ozens of domestic and foreign investors are awaiting the construction schedule for the coastal highway to be built with an extension of 34 kilometers (from Section III - El Naranjo to the municipality of San Juan del Sur) which is currently in its first stage. The construction schedule is vital for programming investments, said the experts that were consulted.

"There are all kinds of projects waiting in line like hotels, shopping centers, and housing developments.

One in particular that I like is a regional technical school project to be installed in Tola. It will educate and graduate technicians in food handling, warehouse management, accounting assistants, construction, and electricians. When there is a lot of construction, there is a lack of this type of personnel. If all the projects were built at the same time there would not be enough workforce so it is a priority to train them" says Raúl Calvet, president of Calvet & Asociados, a leading consulting company specializing in hotel, tourism, and real estate project development.

Calvet & Associates estimates at least 10 investment projects destined for Tola that would add to the 24 that already exist and two projects for San Juan del Sur that would add to the 160 already established.

"The difference is abysmal and is in itself the town of San Juan del Sur. San Juan del Sur generates tourist attractions that neither Tola nor El Astillero have. With guidance, Tola and El Astillero could be developed into tourist towns taking them to a level such as San Juan del Sur", considers Calvet.

He also points out that there are new investment projects for Carazo and Managua. "There are less but existing. This will encourage new projects because access to tourism projects attracts investment. En tanto Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, exministro de Turismo ha dicho que “el impacto económico y estratégico para el turismo de la construcción de esta nueva vía será formidable: uniría las más visitadas playas del Pacífico de Nicaragua vinculándolas a dos aeropuertos internacionales: Liberia por el sur y Managua por el norte, así como a dos aeropuertos regionales: Costa Esmeralda al sur y Montelimar (que bien podría ser rehabilitado) al norte.

El empresario José León Talavera, de Villas Playa Maderas en San Juan del Sur considera que la costanera es una carretera de oportunidades, no solo de Rivas, sino para el país en general y que desde ya genera el interés en los inversionistas.

THE CHALLENGES IN THE FIRST STAGE The first stage of the coastal highway which will be an allweather road aims to improve access and make a corridor that includes El Naranjo, Ostional, El Coco, San Juan del Sur, and Tola, in addition to the construction of 2 bridges in El Pochote and El Naranjo. This first phase has an initial investment of 150 million cordobas (U$5,067,000 US) According to Calvet at this early stage, there are several sections that are already advanced, such as the stretch from El Naranjo

LOS RETOS DE LA PRIMERA ETAPA La primera etapa de la costanera que será un camino de todo tiempo pretende mejorar el acceso y hacer un corredor desde El Naranjo, Ostional, El Coco, San Juan del Sur y Tola, además de la construcción de 2 puentes (El Pochote y El Naranjo). Esta primera fase tiene una inversión inicial de 150 millones de córdobas.

De acuerdo a Calvet en esta primera fase hay varios tramos que ya están avanzados, como el tramo de El Naranjo a San Juan del Sur. “Desde hace unos dos años se solucionó el problema de los principales puentes y alcantarillas y el tramo desde El Coyol (Tola) hasta el puente de Ochomogo que está en perfecto estado. El tramo desde El Astillero hasta La Pita está en condiciones. Lo que realmente falta es de la parte de atrás de La Pita

Para el experto, los retos de este tipo de carretera son los cauces en tiempos de lluvia a lo largo del municipio de San Juan del Sur y Tola. Además por un lado de la carretera tenemos todas las serranías y cada vez que llueve por cualquier crique corre agua y si no se hace el trabajo correspondiente se cortará la carretera. Sumado a que el tráfico va y viene, no se detiene y terminará de destruir el trabajo.

“Sin duda hay retos y desafíos, pero mucho entusiasmo. Esta carretera da confianza al inversionista de que el gobierno esté interesado en hacer las cosas.

No importa que por ahora sea un camino de todo tiempo y no asfaltado lo importante es que haya agua, luz, conectividad y que se pueda movilizar por la zona sin ningún problema los 365 días del año con los diferentes destinos turísticos.

Justamente fue lo que hizo Costa Rica al inicio, antes de construir carreteras asfaltadas”, expresa el presidente de Calvet & Asociados.

Norman Cerna, de la Cámara de Urbanizadores de Nicaragua (CADUR), señala que la importancia de la costanera va más allá del turismo. Es

Para Calvet, la costanera será un catalizador que ayudará a trabajar en las áreas grises que quedan en la zona como La Ley de Costas y el uso de los 50 metros de costa.

Según el Ministerio de Transporte e Infraestructura (MTI) la construcción definitiva de la Costanera de 141 kilómetros que uniría al menos 26 playas del Pacífico de Nicaragua que van desde El Naranjo, Rivas en la frontera sur, hasta Masachapa, en Managua, se prevee que estará finalizada para finales de 2022 y tendrá un costo aproximado de 130 millones de dólares.

ste año (2017) el turismo en Nicaragua ha empezado con pie derecho.

Además de la construcción de la carretera costanera y múltiples proyectos que beneficiaran al sector, el gobierno ha establecido una comisión de trabajo público- privada para buscar soluciones y con ello dinamizar un sector estratégico para la economía y el desarrollo del país.

Dicha comisión que tuvo su primer encuentro el 26 de enero se reúne una vez al mes y cuenta con la concurrencia de unas 16 personas entre representantes del gobierno y del sector privado quienes buscan soluciones a los principales problemas que se enfrentan en cuanto a materia de turismo se refiere.

“Es un espacio para fortalecer la alianza, el diálogo y consenso que tiene el gobierno permanentemente con el sector privado, y donde se busca articular esfuerzos y mejorar cada día en la atención que se le brinda a los inversionistas y turistas que visitan el país. Es necesario el esfuerzo entre el sector público y el privado para sacar adelante el país y continuar por esas sendas de historia, prosperidad y de paz en Nicaragua”, expresa, Anasha Campbell, codirectora

Coalition to benefit tourism

T

his year (2017) tourism in Nicaragua has begun on the right foot. In addition to the construction of the coastal road and multiple projects that would benefit the tourism sector, the government has established a public-private work commission.

Its purpose is to seek solutions that would stimulate the economy and further development of the country.

This committee had its first meeting on January 26 and meets once a month. It consists of about 16 people including government and private sector representatives who are looking for solutions to the main problems the tourism sector faces.

"It is a space to strengthen the alliance, dialogue, and consensus that the government permanently has with the private sector. Daily efforts are made to articulate and improve the attention that is given to investors and tourists who visit the country.

The effort between the public and the private sector is necessary to move the country forward and continue along these historic paths of prosperity and peace in Nicaragua, "says Anasha Campbell, general co-director of the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism (Intur) and a member of the Public Private Tourism Commission.

Raúl Calvet, presidente ejecutivo de la firma Calvet & Asociados, e integrante de la comisión de turismo refiere que “el sector privado siempre ha participado en comisiones con todos los gobiernos y siempre hemos llegado a nada. En este sentido no es correcto echarle la responsabilidad al gobierno, sino que recae en el sector privado que no ha tenido la proactividad de llegar a las pláticas con temas concretos, analizados, y llegar a discusiones con propuestas claras para que el gobierno las reciba y más bien encaminarnos a cronogramas de trabajo precisos”.

De acuerdo con Calvet la diferencia entre la comisión actual y otras es que “contamos con verdaderos líderes sectoriales”.

This would prevent the private sector from wasting time by making everything agile and less bureaucratic.

Políticas y Estrategias / Policy and Strategy La codirectora del Intur explica que muchos son los temas que en estos primeros tres meses del año se han abordado entre los que mencionan: campañas de promoción tanto nacional como internacional; identificar aquellos “cuellos de botella” que necesitan ser revisados como leyes que agilicen el proceso de inversión, trámites, avales y automatización de los procesos, para que el sector privado no pierda tiempo de dar tantas vueltas, sino que todo sea más ágil y menos burocrático.

“En general buscamos como hacer más atractiva la inversión y mejorar la calidad de los servicios y los productos turísticos que ofrece nuestro país”.

LA PRIMERA IMPRESIÓN De acuerdo con Anasha Campbell es de gran interés para la comisión todo lo que se relaciona con aeropuertos y pasos fronterizos, pues la primera impresión del visitante es prioridad.

“Es un tema muy amplio porque se analiza la manera de crear mejores condiciones y atención para el visitante. Ilse Solórzano, directora tecnica del premio, expresa que el premio reconoce la excelencia de las buenas prácticas en gestión y promoción del turismo pero también es una herrramienta que sirve para conocer cómo está la gestión de la empresa en sus diferentes aspectos y cómo mejorar dicha gestión.

“No es un sistema de calidad, ni tampoco una certificación, pero si es el reconocimiento a la labor de las empresas a través de mecanismos de auto evaluación y verificación de la gestión para que las empresas puedan verificar cuáles son sus retos y donde pueden mejorar su trabajo”, explica la consultora del premio.

Solórzano revela que desde el año pasado se conformó una mesa de trabajo y de apoyo mutuo entre los empresarios ganadores del premio para ayudar a sus pares a descubrir fortalezas, debilidades, oportunidades y amenazas lo que significa uno de los mayores aciertos del premio. Este año la mesa de trabajo está prevista para finales de abril.

“El año pasado nace esta iniciativa como un proyecto piloto dado que la cooperación internacional ha dejado huérfano al sector por lo que buscamos otras alternativas de capacitación. Esto es solidaridad y ayuda mutua entre todos, porque aquí no hay compromiso económico para nadie. Es

El arquitecto consultor, Rodolfo Solórzano, quien realiza los diseños de las ampliaciones y fachada explica que la obra está en la fase de aprobación de diseño y se espera que en el mes de septiembre empiece la construcción.

HOLIDAY INN WILL DEBUT A NEW FACADE AND TWO MEETING ROOMS The Holiday Inn Convention Center in Managua will renew its facade in the next few months, possibly with a natural one that will bring freshness and modernity.

They will also construct on the second floor where the gymnasium is currently located, a spa and two lounges with wide patios. They will invest $5 million dollars in these new projects.

Los dos nuevos salones que tendrán salida a amplias terrazas serán decorados con piedra natural y madera. “Con los cambios queremos refrescar porque somos un hotel contemporáneo de los años 90 y de estilo mexicano y tampoco podemos cambiar por completo esa arquitectura que está bien definida”, señala el arquitecto.

Medrano aplaude la llegada de Volaris al país y explica que es una línea aérea que se especializa en bajo costo. “Aquí hay que tener cuidado porque existe un debate si se baja el costo se genera un tráfico, por lo que hay líneas aéreas que dieron un paso y bajaron los costos para generar el tráfico, pero ojo con eso, porque en la industria del turismo no basta con bajar los tickets de avión, si los hoteles son carísimos o si un tours cuesta el ojo de la cara no funcionará. E

xtremadamente diligente y dueño de una personalidad que contagia con tanta energía positiva y enamorado de Nicaragua y su gente, así es John Morel un norteamericano de 52 años, nacionalizado mexicano y presidente de la empresa asesora en hotelería: Nicaragua Resorts Managament (NRM) y quien llegó al país para aperturar el hotel de lujo Pacaya Lodge y decidió quedarse y compartir sus amplios conocimientos en hotelería y turismo.

Con NRM y junto a su socio, el nicaragüense experto en gastronomía Bismark Hernández, se ha fijado como parte de su compromiso de responsabilidad social empresarial abrir una escuela alrededor de cada hotel donde brinden asesoría. Así lo hizo en Pacaya Lodge y ya lo organiza en La Jolla de Guasacate donde trabaja para reinaugurar dicho hotel y echar a andar un programa de educación técnica en hotelería gratuita para jóvenes del lugar.

Asegura que su mayor reto en Nicaragua es establecer la educación de estándares internacionales para el servicio.

“Queremos formar líderes que tomen las decisiones más correctas y nuestra principal arma es la educación”.

Morel nació en California y es graduado de Administración de Empresas de la Universidad de San Diego; obtuvo un MBA en Hoteles y Restaurantes de la Universidad de Denver y aprendizaje sobre alimentos y bebidas en Ginebra Suiza.

Su carrera en la hotelería la inició en Estados unidos (Newport Beach California) con la cadena canadiense Four Seasons Hotels, se hizo cargo de las gerencias de varios hoteles en México y los últimos cinco años se ha dedicado a abrir hoteles en la Isla Margarita, Venezuela y más recientemente en Panamá.

ohn Morel, president of Nicaragua Resort Management (NRM), is a 52-year-old American, Mexican national who arrived in the country to open the luxurious Pacaya Lodge hotel and decided to stay to share his extensive hotel and tourism knowledge. He is extremely diligent, his personality is filled with positive energy and he is in love with Nicaragua and its people.

Along with Bismark Hernández, his Nicaraguan partner and culinary expert, they have opened schools around hotels where they provide advice as part of NRM’s corporate social responsibility commitment. They initially started at Pacaya Lodge and are now working to re-inaugurate La Jolla de Guasacate which will include a technical educational program free of charge for young people in the community.

He assures that education is his biggest challenge in Nicaragua and considers it necessary in order to establish international standards in service. "We want to train leaders who make the right decisions and our main focus is education."

Morel was born in California, earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of San Diego and an MBA from the University of Denver. He furthered his learning in the food and beverage industry in Geneva, Switzerland.

His career in hospitality began in United States of America and later managed several hotels in Mexico. For the past five years, he has dedicated himself to opening hotels in Isla Margarita, Venezuela, and Panama. His work begins with the hotel’s structure and includes hiring and providing training to the team in order to reach international operating standards.

When asked about his experience at Pacaya Lodge he says "It has been easy to form a team in Nicaragua. I am impressed with their ethics and desire to work. What I am usually able to do in a year takes me six months here. " John Morel, who has spent a year and a half living in Nicaragua, says that "everywhere there is poverty, but here people are looking to grow.

Ubicado en la Reserva Natural Volcán Mombacho, Granada.

Es un sendero de 4 km de extensión y dura 4 horas. Considerado con grado de dificultad “alta”. Está diseñado para aquellos visitantes que desean pasar más tiempo en contacto con la naturaleza y que estén dispuestos a invertir mayor esfuerzo físico. El Puma Trail

Located in the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve in Granada, this trail considered of "high" difficulty has an extension of 4 km and takes four hours to complete. It is designed for those visitors who want to spend more time in contact with nature and who are ready to endure more physical effort. This trail penetrates through the virgin cloud forest and borders the main crater of the volcano in whose center stands a fumarole permanently emitting sulfurous gases. The route is sinuous with rises and falls between glens and offers viewpoints with spectacular views.

5. Maderas Escalar el volcán Ubicado en la Isla de Ometepe, Rivas y con un altura de 1,400 metros es un reto fascinante por conquistar. Climb Maderas Volcano

Located in the Island of Ometepe, Rivas and with a height of 1,400 meters, climbing this volcano is a fascinating challenge to conquer. To climb this steep volcano you will have to do it by foot and use a hiking pole. This experience will take you through coffee plantations on its slope and into a wonderful tropical forest filled with huge trees further up.

You will also discover trails with petroglyphs. Near the top there is a lagoon filled with cold water that due to the humidity of the terrain is characterized as having swampy margins and represents along with the waterfall of San Ramón one of the major attractions of the volcano. Climbing to the summit and descending it can take you about 8 hours.

If you make the journey from the side of Finca Magdalena, you must pay the entrance to the estate that has a cost of U$ 2.00 dollars. Cycling on the Datanlí- El Diablo Natural Reserve

To traverse the 80 kilometers of the Datanlí-Diablo Natural Reserve by mountain biking is quite a challenge.

Seated between the departments of Matagalpa and Jinotega, this route departs from the central park of Jinotega passing through several communities of the reserve and flows into Cerro Los Papales, east of Jinotega.

This natural attraction is much known for its biodiversity, its tropical cloud forest and the quality of its coffee plantations. Datanlí has a biodiversity that makes it one of the areas with the largest number of endemic species in Nicaragua.

¡Tres días de moto!

Recorre más de 550 kilómetros al norte del país.

Si eres de los que no te gusta el turismo convencional y prefieres la libertad de andar a la velocidad perfecta abordo de una moto y vivir los caminos del norte de Nicaragua, te recomendamos el tour de tres días donde admiraras paisajes únicos y usando lo menos posible carreteras principales.

Se sale de Matagalpa rumbo a Jinotega, disfrutando los primeros 32 km de bellos paisajes de montañas e inclinadas curvas. De Jinotega se llega a San Rafael de Norte para visitar el Tepeyac donde descansan los restos de Fray Odorico D'Andrea en proceso de beatificación.

El camino continúa a San Sebastián de Yalí donde observaras impresionantes vistas. Se llega a Condega, usando gran parte de camino de tierra. De Condega se va a Telpaneca que son unos 45km de preciosas curvas y pasando por el puente más alto de Nicaragua.

La ruta se dirige a San Juan del Rio Coco por carretera recién adoquinada. A pocos kms de este último lugar se toma un desvío en un sitio llamada La Reforma, son unos 20km de tierra y luego adoquín hasta llegar a Santa Clara y desde ahí se cierra el día en Jalapa después de más de 200kms de mucha adrenalina.

Al segundo día, el tour se dirige a Ciudad Antigua, la terce-

ra ciudad más antigua de Nicaragua después de Granada y León. Luego, se pasa por Mozonte y Ocotal y se llega al Cañón de Somoto para hacer un pequeño tour por este sitio. El viaje continúa hacia el pueblo más alto de Nicaragua, San José de Cusmapa, una carretera cubierta de pinos nos lleva.

Desde un mirador en lo alto del pueblo se divisan las montañas de Honduras y volcanes del PacÍfico de Nicaragua. Luego de un pequeño picnic, nos vamos a San Juan de Limay para ver a los escultores de la zona tallar las piedras y crear las famosas gordas. Desde Limay partimos a Estelí para descansar después del hermoso recorrido. De Estelí no podríamos irnos sin antes hacer el tour del tabaco.

El tercer día. Tomamos la carretera hacia la Concordia y conectamos con Jinotega y Matagalpa. Nos desviamos al ecoalbergue La Fundadora para visitar la Cascada La Bujona que está en la Reserva Datanli, frontera natural que divide Matagalpa y Jinotega, y de esa manera se cierra este impresionante y único recorrido por la zona norte del país que comprende más de 550km.

If you are a person who prefers unconventional tourism, the freedom to ride a motorcycle at perfect speeds and live the roads of northern Nicaragua, we recommend this three-day tour where you will admire unique landscapes while avoiding main roads.

The tour departs from Matagalpa and heads towards Jinotega. During these first 32 kilometers you will enjoy beautiful scenery filled with mountains and inclined curves.

From Jinotega you will arrive to San Rafael de Norte to visit Tepeyac, resting place of the remains of Fray Odorico D’Andrea who is in process of beatification.

The path continues to San Sebastian de Yalí where you can observe impressive views and then reach Condega on a dirt road. From Condega to Telpaneca, the 45km ride is filled with breathtaking curves and passes by the highest bridge of Nicaragua. The route continues towards San Juan del Rio Coco on a road that has recently been paved. A few kilometers away you will take a detour to La Reforma which will consist of 20km of dirt road followed by a paved road until you reach Santa Clara. We then call it a day in Jalapa, the last stop after riding more than 200kms filled with adrenalin.

On the second day the tour heads to Ciudad Antigua, the third oldest city of Nicaragua after Granada and Leon. You will then pass through Mozonte and Ocotal and arrive

in the Somoto Canyon for a short tour of this site. The trip continues on a road covered with pines to the highest town of Nicaragua called San José de Cusmapa. From an overlook in the top of the town you can see the mountains of Honduras and volcanoes on the Pacific side of Nicaragua. After a small picnic, we go to San Juan de Limay to see the sculptors of the area carving stone and creating the famous fat women statutes. From Limay we depart to Estelí to do the tobacco tour and later rest after the beautiful journey.

MÁS OPCIONES PARA VISITANTES El capitán del barco Norwegian Jewel dijo que cada vez más se corre la voz de que Nicaragua es un país bello y los turistas quieren conocer, por lo que hacen falta algunas condiciones para los visitantes. “La participación de los turistas es cada vez más alta por cada crucero, básicamente se corre la voz que es un país muy bonito. Un bello país con volcanes y lagos y con futuro prometedor”.

Hastrom recomendó que el país debería tener más ofertas gastronómicas. “Creo que deben de existir algunos restaurantes afuera del barco y no deben olvidar que no solo son los turistas, hay 1,100 miembros del barco que quieren conocer, salir del barco pero que no tie-
