1. SZTUKA — UMIEJĘTNOŚĆ WYTWARZANIA RZECZY WEDLE REGUŁ Zadanie przedstawienia i zmierzenia się z własną twórczością nie jest zadaniem łatwym. Potrzebny jest stosowny dystans, który uczyni z autoreferatu rzetelne, choć autorskie przedstawienie własnych poglądów — credo, będące wyznaniem wiary i refleksji nad tym co się udało a gdzie nie miałem racji. Tak pojęta refleksja siłą rzeczy, ująć musi wiele warstw aktywności — twórczej, projektowej, teorii, publikacji i dydaktycznej.

Poszukiwanie własnej drogi twórczej stało się początkiem poszukiwania teoretycznej jej podbudowy.

Teoria miała ułatwić zrozumienie idei zawartej w kreowanej architekturze, pozwolić na głębsze przeżywanie architektonicznego obiektu, na jego zrozumienie.

Miała też odpowiedzieć na problem jak tworzyć architekturę pożądaną przez odbiorcę, pozwalającą mu głębiej wniknąć, dając również możliwość wzbogacenia własnego warsztatu i jego intelektualnego zaplecza. Intelektualne zaplecze prowadziło do przyznania racji tym, którzy uważali, że architektoniczna forma ujawnia się w drodze mozolnego odnajdywania i odkrywania jej wewnętrznego ładu i porządku, zgodnego z naturą i przyrodą, które tworzą równowagę pomiędzy zjawiskami i międzyludzką relacją!

Punktem wyjścia do sformułowania przewodniej idei we własnej twórczości było określenie Tatarkiewicza, że sztuka jest „umiejętnością wytwarzania rzeczy wedle reguł”. Świadomość powyższego, poparta doświadczeniami z własnej praktyki, doprowadziła do przekonania, iż osiągnięcie harmonii układu, właściwych proporcji, ładu i porządku przestrzennego, wymaga działania wedle reguł i określonego rygoru!

Rygor ten zdefiniowany został przez przestrzenny moduł estetyczny — miernik wartości kompozycji i estetyki. Obraną jednostką stał się sześcian, rozpoznawalny także w abstrakcji, najprostszy elementarny układ przestrzenny.

W poszukiwaniu formy kreowanych obiektów, stanowił on element regulujący wszystkie problemy przyporządkowania elementów kompozycji i jest zarazem instrumentem nadającym wewnętrzny porządek kreowanej przestrzeni lub budowli — także urbanistycznych zespołów.

Ten sposób tworzenia staje się zarazem procesem medytacyjnym, przeciwstawiającym się często funkcjonalistycznemu tworzeniu zbudowanego dla człowieka środowiska. Jako jednostka miary, sześcian, spełnia rolę także estetycznego modułu. Świadomość faktu, że tworzona architektura określa w różnych skalach relacje międzyludzkie, skłania do poszukiwania nowych dróg architektonicznego języka, którego cechą charakterystyczną jest humanizm, wyrażający się między innymi, możliwością subiektywnych doznań estetycznych odbiorcy i twórcy, któremu przynależne jest prawo do wyrwania się z rygorów i dopuszczenia swobody działania.

Moje własne przekonanie, że architektura winna być poezją, a nie zimnym dziennikarstwem, przekonanie, że piękno jest również pożyteczne, stało się permanentnym rozbudzaniem potrzeby nadawania obiektom poetycznego wymiaru, zwróceniem uwagi na ponadczasową estetyczną jakość, na elementy ją określające, a także na środki służące do osiągnięcia sublimacji — słowem poszukiwania własnego klasycyzmu.

2. FORMA — REZULTAT PROCESU Kilka wybranych i zaprezentowanych poniżej przykładów ujawnia jeszcze jedną cechę własnego warsztatu — proces uwalniania formy. Łatwo można zauważyć, że forma jest wynikiem specyficznego procesu jej „uwalniania”, a nie poszukiwania w ramach specyficznego, formalnego zamysłu.

Prezentowane przykłady unaoczniają rezultaty końcowe, które nie są spontanicznie narzucane, lecz skonstruowane, wyszlifowane, „jedynie chciane” spośród towarzyszących ich powstawaniu, wielu uwarunkowań.

To specyficzne „uwolnienie formy” oznacza dla mnie wolność architektury, wolność wyzwoloną z więzów rodzących się w sposób pełen przygód. Różnorodność tematyczna w procesie uwalniania formy, przy każdym projekcie, narzuca konieczność zaczynania od początku, od nowa.

Efektem wielu studiów wykonanych we własnej pracy jest stwierdzenie, że proces uwalniania formy nie korzysta z gotowych rozwiązań.

Zawsze przed rozpoczęciem nowej architektonicznej kreacji następuje określenie uwarunkowań i wzajemnej relacji potrzeb i możliwości.

We własnych autorskich poszukiwaniach architektoniczna forma, jako element określający przestrzeń jest formą uwolnioną z geometrycznego porządku. Jest formą uporządkowaną określonym rygorem przestrzeni i przyjętym geometrycznym porządkiem, jest formą, która sama w sobie owym porządkiem być nie musi.

Uwolnienie formy, w rzeczywistości jest też, co widać w ilustrowanych przykładach, następstwem postępowania wedle zasad porządku, który tkwi w specyfice projektowanego zadania, którego tendencją jest szukanie możliwości niezależnego „wypowiedzenia się”.

Przyjmując w trakcie projektowania rolę obserwatora, przekonałem się, że działanie wedle reguł i rygorów, pozwala architektowi na świadome uczestnictwo, które staje się prawdziwym aktem tworzenia.

Pozwala na przyglądanie się jak elementy projektowanego obiektu znajdują swoją drogę, czyniąc z porządku konwencję służącą architektonicznej artykulacji i estetycznej jakości bazującej na geometrii.

W katalogu do autorskiej wystawy „Moduł przestrzenny? Estetyka? Architektura?” Profesor Witold Karski pisał: „[…] Należy przyjrzeć się prezentowanym projektom […] genezie powstawania form sprawdzanych rygorem przestrzennym. Projekty, realizacje i studia teoretyczne tworzą idealne warunki dla dalszego rozwoju poszukiwań nad formą architektury. Formą zgodną z psyche autorów, równocześnie korygowaną dążeniem do stworzenia subiektywnego odbioru architektury w obszarze estetyki. Czy ta praca jest już zamknięta? Na pewno nie, ale jest w niej jakieś antidotum na chaotyczną erupcję form, tak często występujące w dobie współczesnej.

Brak wszelkich norm rzadko prowadzi do pełnej swobody, zaś często do absurdalnego bałaganu. Nie jest to celem architektury. Czy wyjdzie z tego nowy klasycyzm?… chyba, że pod klasycyzmem będziemy rozumieć umiar, logikę, porządek i jednoznaczność.”

W przekonaniu moim, wybrane i prezentowane przykłady z własnej twórczości, służyć mają jako dowód potwierdzający podążanie własną drogą w celu realizacji artystycznych zamierzeń.

W tym przekonaniu utwierdzają mnie również opinie i spostrzeżenia „zewnętrznych” autorytetów, twórców, studentów–dyplomantów, analizujących w swych pracach dyplomowych, artystyczny aspekt zawarty w projektach i realizacjach, i w ich teoretycznej podbudowie. To świadczy, że artystyczny dorobek staje się wyzwaniem nie tylko dla receptorów zmysłów, ale też umysłu.

3. ARTYSTYCZNE CREDO Witruwiańska triada — użyteczność, trwałość i piękno — to kanon, utożsamiający moje artystyczne credo nie tylko z dążeniem do realizacji potrzeb człowieka, ale też do osiągania, w projektowanych obiektach eurytmii, dobrych proporcji, które osiągnąć można dzięki właściwym stosunkom liczbowym między Budowa form w oparciu o przestrzenny moduł estetyczny poprzez odejmowanie lub dodawanie submodułów

podstawowymi wymiarowi budynku i jego elementów, czyli dzięki zastosowaniu określonego modułu.

Właściwe proporcje to idealna symetria. Eurytmia i symetria to podstawowe pryncypia sztuki.

Dowodem na przyjęcie takiego credo, jest moja działalność twórcza, a także teoretyczna i naukowa podbudowa, przekazywana studentom w procesie ich edukacji, wykładów, konferencyjnych wypowiedzi i publikacji.

Przykłady, najbardziej reprezentatywne dla własnej twórczości, wydają się potwierdzać, że ich estetyczna ponadczasowość wynika z proporcji i ładu. Cechuje ją zauważalna oryginalność i indywidualność, uciekanie od modnych trendów i plagiatów.

Kompozycja bazuje na geometrycznym porządku, z niego uwolniona angażuje przestrzeń architektoniczną kreowaną na miarę człowieka na styku z życiem. Nie ma w nich przypadku, skrótu i obrania łatwiejszej drogi.

Zafascynowanie modułem i poszukiwaniem w nim piękna ponadczasowego, określa zarazem mój stosunek do przeszłości i kultury (Biblioteka Jagiellońska, Opera Krakowska, Filharmonia w Łodzi, Teatr Polski w Szczecinie).

Architektura kreowana odważnie, niezależnie od skali, jest procesem poszukiwania, wrażliwego na to co istnieje. W swej nadrzędności struktury formalnej, w swej zakodowanej głęboko metaforyce, operuje przy całej swej prostocie, wyrafinowanymi efektami przestrzennymi.

Przekracza zasady modernizmu z jego dominacją ujęć technologicznych i funkcjonalnych.

Cechuje ją ekonomia środków wyrazu i dominacja geometrycznych systemów budowy formy. Nigdy nie jest estetyczną igraszką, autonomiczną formą. Jest pełna pokory i szacunku dla źródeł!

BHiblioteka w Teheranie — budowa siatki geometrycznej w przestrzeni

Na pozór zewnętrznie proste formy, u podstaw których leży przyjęty geometryczny rygor, prezentują niezwykle skomplikowane wnętrze — jest w nich połączenie poetyckości z przemyślaną i skrupulatnie geometrycznie skonstruowaną formą.

Konsekwentne podążanie obraną drogą, zadeklarowaną ideowo, uwalniającą mnie od potrzeby deklarowania przynależności do istniejących kierunków we współczesnej architektonicznej sztuce, to przekonanie o konieczności podążania własną drogą, w dialogu z potrzebami człowieka, zbudowanym środowiskiem, historią, naturą, środowiskiem i kulturą.

Dla architektury nie jest filozofią projektową — „bycie inną”. Robienie rzeczy inaczej, w oderwaniu od doświadczeń historii, w architekturze niekoniecznie jest kreatywne.

Architektura jako matka wszystkich sztuk, przewyższa je. W przeciwieństwie do dominującej mody, architektura to nie tylko kształt i jego powłoka. Architektura to ucieleśnienie kultury wywodzącej sie z przeszłości, to tworzenie jej teraźniejszości, dotyczy współczesnych, aktualnych i życiowych spraw. Jest ulepszaniem przeszłości w wykorzystaniu przestrzeni i technologii i materiałów, uwrażliwia i uczy postrzegania piękna i równowagi wartości.

4. DOROBEK TWÓRCZY Bogaty dorobek twórczy ilustruje autorstwo, tematycznie zróżnicowana, znacząca ilość prac projektowo-realizacyjnych w dziedzinie urbanistyki, architektury i architektury wnętrz. Dorobek w dziedzinie architektury wnętrz, za wybitne osiągnięcia, uhonorowany został przez Ministra Kultury , nadaniem mi tytułu artysty plastyka.

Rangę osiągnięć twórczych, udokumentowaną prestiżowymi nagrodami i publikacjami, potwierdzają wybrane i zaprezentowane poniżej dzieła, których listę uzupełnia poszerzony wykaz dorobku twórczego, zawarty w tomie 2 „Autoportretu — Autoreferatu”.

Konsekwentna realizacja założeń „estetycznego programu”, ukształtowanego w oparciu o teorię formy uwolnionej, opisanych w artystycznym credo, ujawnia analiza dzieł utrwalonych w szkicach, zapisach planów, rysunkach i zrealizowanych obiektach.

Każde z nich jest opowieścią o tym, że wyobraźnia i geometria, determinują proces kreacji architektury, wolnej od przelotnych mód. Rezultaty procesu kreacji, potwierdzają zarazem brak akceptacji dla architektury „niemej i masowej”. Przeciwnie, tworzona zgodnie z przyjętym credo architektura, pomimo niejednokrotnie finansowych ograniczeń, pozostaje wierna własnym ideom.

Wybrane przykłady są dziełami skoncentrowanymi wokół problemu budowania formy, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zagadnienia proporcji, harmonii i porządku — zagadnieniami, zakorzenionymi w rozległej tradycji filozoficznej, stricte estetycznej i artystycznej, w świecie filozofii piękna związanego z matematyką i geometrią.

Uzasadnieniem zakotwiczenia własnej twórczości w estetycznej i artystycznej tradycji jest przyjęta teoretyczna podbudowa i wynikająca z niej metoda.

Celem przyjętego we własnej twórczości geometrycznego porządku, jest uczynienie bardziej zrozumiałym tworzenie estetycznych rozstrzygnięć formalnych.

Prezentowany dorobek twórczy udowadnia, że efektem są dzieła, które nie są czystym geometrycznostrukturalnym formalizmem, ale uwidaczniają tkwiącą w nich zasadę morfologii formy, zapisanej abstrakcyjnymi liczbami, przetworzonymi na język form architektonicznych.

Ten proces pozwala, w akcie kreacji, jednoczyć trzy elementy budujące architekturę: estetykę, funkcjonalizm i konstrukcję.

Swoją twórczością staram się unaocznić, że nowa architektura ma prawo i może powstawać w każdym otoczeniu. Każde miejsce nadaje projektom inny kontekst, każdorazowo jest dla niego innym wyzwaniem twórczym, korzystającym z tradycji, nie kopiując jej, czyni wartość budynków historycznych łatwiej rozpoznawalną.

Konsekwencję w tworzeniu własnej architektury prześledzić można na kilku wybranych przykładach, poczynając od najwcześniejszych projektów i realizacji, takich jak np. charakteryzujących się ascetyczną formą domów jednorodzinnych, zbudowanych z najprostszych figur geometrycznych, podkreślających szlachetność lapidarnych form.

Z obiektów architektury monumentalnej najbardziej znaczącym jest Kościół Świętej Królowej Jadwigi w Krakowie, pierwszego z przykładów zrealizowanych w tej skali działa, które wyrosło na gruncie teorii formy uwolnionej. Projekt opublikowany w wielu krajowych i zagranicznych czasopismach, a także w wydawnictwach książkowych (W.J. Stock, „Christian Sacred Buildings in Europe since 1950” — wyd. Prestel; Munich. Berlin. London. New York „DICTIONNAIRE DE L’ARCHITECTURE DU XX SICLE”; .... „Encyklopedia Gazety Wyborczej”, „Award Winning Architecture 96 — International Yearbook”, wyd. Prestel).

Projekt tego Kościoła powstał w duchu estetyki porządku o wyraźnych cechach rozumowego systemu koordynacji, choć o wyraźnym skomplikowaniu formy.

Przestrzeń Kościoła nie jest statyczna. Jej duch, dyskretny i majestatyczny, rozprzestrzenia się szeroko. Wyważona „ruchliwość” przestrzeni pozwala zafalować betonowej ścianie jak draperii na wietrze.

Wyczuwalna jednoznacznie dyscyplina, widoczna jest w abstrakcyjnej grze podziałów świetlików,

pojawiających się, nieoczekiwanie w najważniejszych konstrukcyjnie miejscach — w narożnikach ścian, tak jakby światło miało być kamieniem węgielnym (węglowym).

To światło rozcinające bryły, staje się „aktywnym konstrukcyjnym” elementem przestrzeni architektonicznej, wywołującym wrażenie bierności ścian. „Pozyskanie wielkości i wysokości bez szkody dla spokoju, by zbudować Kościół piętrzący przestrzeń — neogotyk zupełnie wyjątkowej natury o kompozycji wywodzącej się z odwiecznego warsztatu geometrii” — tak o kościele Świętej Królowej Jadwigi napisał Dirk Mayhofer, uznany niemiecki krytyk architektury. „[…] Świątynia na Krowodrzy, podobnie jak wszystkie inne realizacje Loeglera, wyrasta z umiłowania geometrii. W całym założeniu widoczne jest wyraźne stosowanie modułu kwadratu i sześcianu jako podstawowych form i jednostek projektowych. […]

To podporządkowanie projektu jednej figurze geometrycznej wynika z pragnienia osiągnięcia absolutnego ładu i harmonii w architekturze. […] Kwadrat i sześcian nie ograniczają wyobraźni twórczej Loeglera. Przyjmując antyczno-średniowieczną definicję sztuki, iż ars recta ratio factibilum, architekt dowodzi jedynie, że wolność artystyczna jest odkrywaniem niezbywalnych i uniwersalnych praw rządzących światem harmonii.

Ich odnalezienie pozwala na „wytwarzanie wedle reguł”, czyli na swobodę w granicach powszechnych zasad, gwarantujących poprawność rezultatu. […] Loegler używa jednak geometrii w modernistyczny sposób, jako rastra, modułu i czynnika formotwórczego zarazem, ponieważ pozwala mu to na tworzenie dzieł pozbawionych odniesień historycznych, a przy tym złożonych z brył elementarnych, przynależnych do uniwersalnego i autonomicznego języka architektury. […] Kwadrat jako doskonała figura geometryczna i krzyż równoramienny, figura tyleż regularna, co i budząca automatyczne i nieodparte skojarzenia treściowe z Chrystusem i chrześcijaństwem, stanowiły zawsze podstawę geometryczno-symbolicznej kombinatoryki.

Kościół Świętej Królowej Jadwigi w Krakowie

[…] Zastosowana przez Loeglera w krowoderskim kościele symbolika ma więc charakter elementarny. Tak pojęty symbolizm współgra z modernistycznym dążeniem do uniwersalności autoteliczności języka artystycznej wypowiedzi. Architekt nie wprowadza żadnych elementów, które wykraczałyby poza środki konstrukcyjne i utylitarne, a także nie nadbudowuje żadnej anegdoty na materii swej budowli. Kościół Świętej Jadwigi pozostaje w pełni autonomicznym dziełem architektury.” — „DWA KOŚCIOŁY O MOŻLIWOŚCI ZNACZEŃ SYMBOLICZNYCH W ARCHITEKTURZE SAKRALNEJ CZASÓW AUTONOMII JĘZYKA ARTYSTYCZNEGO „ — fragment z książki: Studia dedykowane Profesor Annie Różyckiej-Bryzek, Kraków 2001, Wojciech Bałus, historyk sztuki, akademik.

Z pogranicza tej samej skali urbanistycznej i architektonicznej jest projekt Kościoła Matki Boskiej różańcowej w Rzeszowie, którego rozczłonkowana forma bryły kościelnego kompleksu, stworzona jest na zasadzie dodawania modularnych jednostek.

Ich proporcje i skala określone są przy pomocy estetycznego modułu — sześcianu o wymiarach 1,2 × 1,2 × 1,2 m. Kolejnym dowodem fascynacji modułem, jako budulcem przestrzeni, określającym wszystko: od ogólnych stosunków przestrzennych do najdrobniejszych szczegółów, są projekty Muzeum Czynu Rewolucyjnego w Krakowie, Centralnego Ośrodka Kultury w Katowicach i Wydziału Technologii Żywności Akademii Rolniczej w Krakowie.

Kolejny krok w poszukiwaniu nowych możliwości tworzenia architektury w oparciu o własną teorię uwolnienia formy, to tworzenie prostszych układów brył dynamicznych, podlegających napięciu, grawitacji, ciśnieniu.

Najbardziej znanym i charakterystycznym przykładem jest projekt domu pogrzebowego Brama do Miasta Zmarłych w Krakowie — Batowicach.

Jego myślą przewodnią było stworzenie budowli — znaku o ponadczasowym charakterze. Budowli, która staje na „końcu drogi” jak brama, symbolizować będzie granicę pomiędzy światem żywych a nieskończonością.

Przyjęta w tym zrealizowanym obiekcie symbolika, jest naturalną konsekwencją potrzeby zbudowania obiektu architektonicznego, który wciąga nas w świat transcendentnych przeżyć, wykraczających poza granice świadomości i poznania, przenoszących nas w świat mistycznej fantazji.

Tematem tego projektu jest problem przejścia od światła do cienia, kontrastu pomiędzy jasnością a ciemnością, relatywność naszych przeżyć osobistych wywołanych symboliką formy. Odpowiedzią na tak sformułowany temat projektu jest zrealizowany obiekt, w realności, którego znajdują odbicie autorskie kanony budowy formy, tworzenie przestrzeni, proporcji i architektonicznych próżni .

Geometria stała się tu narzędziem organizującym i porządkującym zarówno otoczenie obiektu jak i jego rzut i podziały bryły. Geometryczny system został momentami przełamany. To nie on ostatecznie definiuje formę. Dzięki arbitralnej decyzji w skutek odkrycia w urbanistycznym kontekście lub w strukturze funkcjonalnej elementu, zakłócona została schematyczność systemu wprowadzając do architektonicznej formy równowagę pomiędzy wiernością wobec reguł i wolnością od nich.

Architektura Domu Pogrzebowego, to głęboko przemyślana koegzystencja dwu elementów, nowego kształtu przestrzennego i nowego wyrazu estetycznego, które czynią ten obiekt dziełem o wielkim znaczeniu w dotychczasowym dorobku twórczym.

Nominowany do Nagrody Miesa van der Rohe „Dom Pogrzebowy”, jako pierwszy polski obiekt, zostaje finalistą VI edycji Europejskiej Nagrody im. Miesa van der Rohe.

Projekt „Domu Pogrzebowego” otrzymuje nagrody w kraju, jest publikowany w prestiżowych architektonicznych czasopismach zagranicznych, (np. Nagroda II stopnia Ministra Spraw Wewnętrznych 12

i Administracji za wybitne osiągnięcia twórcze — Nagroda Roku 1999; I Nagroda Polski Cement za najlepszy budynek wzniesiony w technologii betonowej; „Architektura”, „Domus”, „Architectural Record”;..., „THE PHAIDON ATLAS OF 21st CENTURY WORLD ARCHITECTURE” — New York/London; „581 Architects in the World” — Japonia).

Dom Pogrzebowy, zaliczony do grona IKON POLSKIEJ ARCHITEKTURY, pokazywany jest na wystawach w kraju i za granicą, prezentowany na wykładach w krajowych i zagranicznych uczelniach architektonicznych (np. Kraków, Białystok, Kielce, Katowice, Warszawa, Münster, Lipsk, Darmstadt).

W autorskich artystycznych kanonach utrzymane zostały także trzy inne, ważne i charakterystyczne dla twórczego dorobku obiekty: Nowe skrzydło Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej w Krakowie, Zespół obiektów Uniwersytetu Ekonomicznego też w Krakowie, i Gmach Filharmonii Łódzkiej w Łodzi. Charakteryzuje te projekty kontekstualne odniesienie się do zastanej wartości miejsca.

W przypadku Nowego skrzydła Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej, determinantą dla własnej wypowiedzi jest zabytkowy gmach autorstwa Wacława Krzyżanowskiego, z którym, zrealizowany obiekt prowadzi ścisły, estetyczno-formalny, dialog.

Wewnętrzny ład i porządek regulowany przestrzennym modułem, w swej przestrzennej dyspozycji nawiązuje do istniejącego budynku skalą, materiałem i rysunkiem okładziny oraz regularną, niemal rygorystyczną artykulacją elewacji.

Jakość architektury nowego skrzydła Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej, znalazła uznanie w środowisku polskich architektów. Obiekt otrzymał nagrodę roku SARP, przyznawaną pod patronatem Premiera Rządu RP, za najlepsze dzieło architektoniczne zrealizowane w Polsce w roku 2001, oraz nagrodę roku za najlepsze działo architektoniczne, zrealizowane w Polsce ze środków publicznych. „Z dziesięcioletniego dorobku architektonicznego Krakowa wymienię właściwie tylko jeden mój ulubiony obiekt: nowe skrzydło Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej, zaprojektowane przez Romualda Loeglera. Myślę, że właśnie ten budynek można z czystym sumieniem uznać za najlepszą wizytówkę krakowskiej architektury z okresu przełomu wieków. Reprezentujący polską architekturę na słynnym prestiżowym Biennale Architektury w Wenecji, projekt rozbudowy Kampusu Akademii Ekonomicznej w Krakowie, stanowi przejście ze strefy urbanistycznego układu istniejących budynków, do nowego, wyznaczonego przez sąsiadujący z Kampusem Akademii Ekonomicznej, obiekt zwany potocznie „Szkieletorem” — ciągle nie ukończonej realizacji budynku przeznaczonego onegdaj na siedzibę NOT-u.

Niezabudowany teren w kształcie „trójkąta” staje się strefą przejścia. Zasada kompozycji to próba pokonania „gwałtu” jaki stworzył, zrealizowany w stanie surowym, budynek NOT-u.

Dynamika przestrzeni podkreślona została, umieszczoną nad halą basenu bryłą Audytorium Maximum.

Architektura nowych obiektów zdominowana została przez „ciężkie” wątki murów z cegły, co stanowi nawiązanie do zabytkowego gmachu Głównego.

Nowe obiekty, jako „dodane” do kompleksu Kampusu, charakteryzują odważne rozwiązania formalne, zachowujące w pełni swój indywidualny wyraz, nie kopiując elementów otoczenia.

Publikowany w wielu czasopismach krajowych i zagranicznych (np. CONSTRUIRE IN LATERIZIO 132/2009; KAMPUS AKADEMII EKONOMICZNEJ W KRAKOWIE, Jacek Purchla, Wyd. CRiP AE, Kraków 2006; MATERIA Settembre 55/2007; opublikowany został też w Katalogu wspomnianego wcześniej weneckiego 6th Internationale Architecture Exhibition — la Biennale di Venezia, ELECTA 1996).

W swojej relacji z przemian kampusu Uniwersytetu Ekonomicznego w Krakowie, Profesor Jacek Purchla napisał: (cyt.): „[…] Romuald Loegler […] To postać, która w latach 90. wyrosła na klasyka współczesnej architektury, to także jeden z nielicznych krakowskich architektów drugiej połowy XX wieku, który przekroczył granicę lokalności. Nie jest dziełem przypadku, że Biblioteka Jagiellońska, Dom Pogrzebowy na cmentarzu w Batowicach, Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny, Międzynarodowe Centrum Kultury, a także gmach Opery — najbardziej prestiżowe realizacje w Krakowie — powierzone zostały właśnie jemu. Do reprezentatywnych przykładów dzieł, ilustrujących dotychczasową drogę twórczą, bez wątpienia zaliczyć można budynek Filharmonii Łódzkiej.

Cechy charakterystyczne architektury budynku Filharmonii Łódzkiej to: — czysta współczesna kompozycja podkreślająca historyczny kontekst miejsca, przy jednoczesnym nacechowaniu go formą mającą szansę być neutralnie współczesną przez następne dziesięciolecia; — współczesne formy stanowią jedynie tło dla mocnego akcentu historycznej elewacji. Analiza bryły budynku ujawnia charakterystyczną cechę — swoistą dychotomię zastosowanych rozwiązań formalnych. W ten sposób zbudowane zostało napięcie, które konstytuuje relacje pomiędzy tym co na zewnątrz i wewnątrz, pomiędzy główna fasadą a pozostałymi elewacjami.

Kreacja fasady Filharmonii Łódzkiej to wypadkowa pomiędzy historią miejsca, specyficznymi funkcjami reprezentacyjnymi i zastosowanego wachlarza rozwiązań architektonicznych, będących świadectwem współczesnych preferencji estetycznych. Kontekst historyczny jest zrealizowany poprzez przetwarzanie języka form historycznych przy pomocy współczesnych technik i materiałów. Naniesione na tafle szkła obrazy symulujące boniowanie, edikule, kolumny, gzymsy czy płyciny inspirowane malarstwem pointylistycznym, tworzą w efekcie na powierzchni fasady intrygujące napięcie wynikające z potencjału jej odczytań. W zależności od tego, na czym zogniskujemy swój wzrok, jawi się przed nami zapis minionej historii Łodzi, której symbolem był dawny „Dom Koncertowy” Ignacego Vogla, ale także jej współczesne aspiracje artykułowane współczesnym językiem architektonicznych form, użytych w zaskakujący sposób, także w głównej sali koncertowej. Jej architekturę tworzy specyficzne kształtowanie poziomej linii ścian, rytm pionowych podziałów i materiał — czerwony granit, który w równym stopniu kształtuje jej estetykę jak i akustykę.

W nurcie omawianego artystycznego credo, w aktualnych projektach jak i w wyżej omówionych przykładach, wykazana została możliwość kreacji współczesnej architektury, bazującej na elementarnych formach geometrycznych i symbolicznych, zakorzenionych w chrześcijańsko-łacińskim kręgu kulturowym.

1. ART — ABILITY TO CREATE THINGS ACCORDING TO RULES The task of presenting and confronting my own creative activity is not an easy task. This requires an appropriate distance, which will make the summary of my professional accomplishments an accurate, although original presentation of my own views — a credo, constituting a statement of belief and afterthought on where I succeeded and where I was wrong. Such afterthought has to cover multiple layers of activity — including creative activity, projects, theory, publications and didactic activity.

The search of my own creative path became the beginning of the search for its theoretical foundation.

The theory was supposed to simplify the understanding of the idea contained in the created architecture, allowing deeper experience of the architectural object, its understanding. It was also supposed to respond to the problem how to create architecture desired by the viewer, allowing deeper insight and giving the possibility of enriching my own workshop and its intellectual background. The intellectual background lead to acknowledging that those were right who thought that architectural form is revealed by laborious tracking and discovering its inner harmony and order, accordant with wildlife and nature, which create balance between phenomena and interpersonal relation!

The starting point of formulating the guiding idea in my own creative activity was the statement of Tatarkiewicz that art is “an ability to create things according to rules.”

The awareness of the above, supported by experiences from my own practice lead to the belief that achieving harmony of arrangement, appropriate proportions and spatial order, requires activity accordant to rules and specific rigour!

This rigour was defined by the spatial aesthetic module — the meter of the quality of composition and aesthetics. The cube has become the chosen unit, recognizable also in abstraction, the simplest elementary spatial arrangement.

In the search of form of the created objects, it constituted an element regulating all problems concerning the allocation of the elements of the composition and it is also an instrument shaping the inner order of the created space or building — as well as urban complexes.

At the same time, this way of creation becomes a meditative process, often challenging the functionalist creation of the environment built for the human beings. As a unit of measurement, the cube, also plays the role of an aesthetic module.

The awareness of the fact that created architecture defines interpersonal relations in different scales, inspires the search of new paths of architectural language, whose characteristic feature is humanism, expressed among others, by the possibility of subjective aesthetic sensations of the receiver and the creator, who is entitled to break away from rigours choosing freedom of action.

My personal belief that architecture should be poetry, not harsh journalism, the belief that beauty is useful as well, has become a permanent stimulation of the need to give objects a poetical dimension, drawing attention to the timeless aesthetic quality, to the elements determining it as well as the means for achieving sublimation — the search for my own classicism.

2. FORM — RESULT OF A PROCESS Several examples chosen and presented below reveal one more feature of my own workshop — the process of releasing form. It can be easily observed that form is a result of a specific process of its “release”, not a result of searching within the frames of a specific, formal intention.

The presented examples visualize outcomes which are not spontaneously imposed but constructed, polished, “only wanted” from the accompanying their creation, various conditions.

For me, this specific “form release” means freedom of architecture, freedom liberated from ties emerging in an adventurous manner. The subject variety in the process of form release, in the case of every project, enforces the necessity of starting over, from the beginning.

Numerous studies performed in my own work resulted in the finding that the process of form release does not take advantage of ready solutions.

What always occurs before the commencement of new architectural creation is the determination of conditions and mutual relation of needs and possibilities.

In own original quests the architectural form, as an element defining space, constitutes form released from geometrical order. This form is ordered by specific rigour of space and accepted geometrical order, it does not have to constitute this order itself.

The release of form is additionally, as it can be observed in the illustrated examples, a consequence of acting in accordance with principles of order which lies in the specificity of the designed task, whose tendency is searching for an opportunity of independent “expression.”

Adapting the role of an observer when designing, I became convinced that acting according to rules and rogours allows an architect conscious participation, which becomes the real act of creation.

It allows to observe how the elements of the designed object find its way, causing order to become a convention used for architectural articulation and aesthetic quality based on geometry.

In the catalogue of his exhibition entitled “Spatial module? Aesthetics? Architecture?” professor Witold Karski wrote: “[…] It is necessary to look at the presented projects […] the origin of forms verified by spatial rigour.

Projects, realisations and theoretical studies create ideal conditions for further development of architectural form exploration. Form consistent with authors’ psyche, simultaneously corrected by the desire to create 28

subjective perception of architecture within the range of aesthetics. Is this work already closed? Certainly not, however, it includes a kind of antidote for the chaotic eruption of forms, so frequently nowadays occurring.

Absence of any norms seldom leads to full freedom, however it often leads to absurd disorder. This is not the purpose of architecture. Will new classicism emerge from this?... maybe, if we understand classicism as moderateness, logic, order and unambiguity.”

In my conviction, the selected and presented examples from my creative activity are supposed to constitute proof of following my own path in order to carry out artistic intentions.

My conviction is additionally strengthened by the opinions and comments of “exterior” experts, creators, graduate students, analyzing in their dissertations the artistic aspect included in the projects and realisations, as well as in their theoretical foundation. This proves that the artistic output becomes a challenge not only for the receptors of senses but also for the mind.

3. ARTISTIC CREDO The Vitruvian trio — commodity, firmness and delight, is a canon identifying my artistic credo not only with the desire to fulfil the needs of human beings, but also to achieve eurythmy and suitable proportions in the designed objects, which may be achieved thanks to the appropriate number ratios between the basic building measurements and its elements, that is thanks to the application of a certain module.

Appropriate proportions constitute ideal symmetry. Eurythmy and symmetry are the basic principles of

The proof of adapting such a credo is my creative activity, as well as the theoretical and scientific foundation, passed on to students in the process of their education, lectures, conferences and publications.

The most representative examples for my own creative activity seem to confirm that their aesthetic timelessness results from proportion and order. It is characterized by noticeable originality and individuality, breaking away from fashionable trends and plagiarisms.

The composition is based on geometrical order, and released from it arranges the architectural space.

It involves no coincidence, shortcut or choosing an easier path.

Fascination with module and the search of the timeless beauty in it, defines my approach both to the past and culture (Jagiellonian Library, Opera House in Krakow, Philharmonic Concert Hall in Lodz, Polish Theatre in Szczecin).

Architecture created boldly, with no dependence on scale, is a process of searching, sensitive to what exists. In its superiority of formal structure, in its deeply coded imagery, it operates with all its simplicity the sophisticated spatial effects.

It surpasses the principles of modernism with its domination of technological and functional presentations. It is characterized by the economy of means of expression and domination of geometrical systems of form building. It is never an aesthetic game, an autonomic form. It is full of humbleness and respect for sources!

Seemingly externally simple forms, at the basis of which lies an accepted geometrical rigour, present extraordinarily complicated interior — they embody a combination of poetry and well thought, scrupulously geometrically constructed form.

Consequence in following the ideologically declared chosen path, liberating me from the need of declaring attachment to the existing trends in the contemporary architectural art, is a conviction of the need to follow my own path, in dialogue with the needs of human beings, built environment, history, nature, environment and culture.

4. CREATIVE OUTPUT The rich creative output is illustrated by thematically diverse, considerable number of design works within the field of urban planning, architecture and interior design. The output within the field of interior design, for outstanding achievements, was honoured by the Minister of Culture by awarding me with the title of fine artist.

The significance of creative achievements, documented by prestigious awards and publications, is confirmed by the selected works presented below, which are completed by the extended listing of the creative achievements, included in volume 2 of “Summary of Professional Accomplishments — Self-Portrait.”

The consequent realization of the assumptions of the “aesthetic program”, shaped on the basis of the theory of released form, described in the artistic credo, is revealed in the analysis of the works preserved in sketches, recorded plans, drawings and realized objects.

Each of them is a tale that imagination and geometry, determine the process of creation of architecture, which is free from passing trends. At the same time, the results of the creation process confirm lack of acceptance for “silent and mass” architecture. On the contrary, architecture created in accordance with the accepted credo, despite not infrequent financial limitations, remains faithful to its ideas.

Selected examples constitute works concentrated around the problem of form building, with special consideration of the aspects of proportion, harmony and order — the aspects rooted in vast philosophical tradition, strictly aesthetic and artistic, in the world of philosophy of beauty connected with mathematics and geometry.

Anchoring my own creative activity in aesthetic and artistic tradition is justified by the accepted theoretical foundation and the method resulting from it.

The purpose of the adapted geometrical order in my own creative activity, is to make the creation of formal aesthetic decisions more understandable.

The presented artistic output proves that this resulted in works, which are not pure geometrical and structural formalism, but they demonstrate their principle of form morphology, recorded with abstract numbers, processed into the language of architectural forms.

This process allows, in the act of creation, to unite three elements building architecture: aesthetics, functionalism and construction.

With my creative activity I am trying to demonstrate that new architecture has the right to and may come into being in every environment. Each place gives projects different context, each time it is a different creative undertaking, benefiting from tradition, without copying it, makes the historical value of the buildings easier to recognize.

Consistency in creating my own architecture can be observed on the basis of several selected examples, starting with the earliest projects and realisations, such as e.g. characterized by the ascetic form of single-family homes, built from the simplest geometrical figures, emphasizing the exquisiteness of lapidary forms.

Among monumental architecture projects the most significant is St. Hedwig’s Church in Krakow, the first example of work carried out in this scale, which emerged on the basis of released form theory. The project published in many national and foreign magazines, as well as in book publishing (W.J. Stock, “Christian Sacred Buildings in Europe since 1950” — Prestel publishing house; Munich. Berlin. London.

St. Hedwig’s Church in Krakow — construction of a geometrical grid in space

The design of the Church was created in the spirit of aesthetics of order with explicit features of rational coordination system, though explicit complication of form.

The space of the Church is not static. Its spirit, discreet and majestic, is spreading widely. The balanced “mobility” of space allows the concrete wall to wave like drapery in the wind. The explicitly felt discipline is visible in the abstract game of the division of skylights, appearing suddenly in the most important places of construction — in the corners of the walls, as if the light was supposed to constitute the cornerstone.

This light cutting the solids, becomes “an active construction” element of the architectural space, creating the impression of the passivity of walls.

“Obtaining size and height without detriment to tranquility, to build a Church accumulating space — a completely extraordinary nature of neo-Gothic with a composition deriving from the everlasting workshop of geometry” — this is what Dirk Mayhofer, a recognized German architecture critic, wrote about St. Hedwig’s Church. “[…] The church in Krowodrza District, like every other realization of Loegler, emerges from the love of geometry. The whole idea clearly reflects the use of the square and cube module as the basic design forms and units. […]

Subjecting the project to one geometrical figure results from the desire to achieve absolute order and harmony in architecture. […] The square and the cube do not limit the creative imagination of Loegler. Assuming the ancient and medieval definition of art, that ars recta ratio factibilum, the architect merely provides proof, that artistic freedom means discovering non-negotiable and universal laws governing the world of harmony.

Their discovery allows “to create according to rules”, in other words freedom within the limits of common principles, guaranteeing the correctness of the result. […] Loegler, however, uses geometry in a modernistic manner, as a raster, module and form building factor at the same time because this allows him to create

works deprived of historical connotations, but composed of elementary solids, belonging to the universal and autonomous language of architecture. […] The square as a perfect geometrical figure and an equalarmed cross, a regular figure, awakening automatic and irresistible content connotations with Christ and Christianity, have always constituted the geometric and symbolic basis of combinatorial analysis. … Thus, Loegler’s symbolic use in the church in Krowodrza has an elementary character. This understanding of symbolism harmonizes with the modernistic pursuit of the universal character of autotelism of the language of artistic expression. The architect does not introduce any elements, which would go beyond the constructional and utilitarian means, and does not add any anecdotes on the matter of his building. At the intersection of the same urbanistic and architectural scale lies the design of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Rzeszów, whose fragmented form of the solid of the church complex is created on the basis of adding modular units.

Their proportions and scale are determined by an aesthetic module — a cube with dimensions of 1.2 × 1.2 × 1.2 m. Another proof of fascination with module, as a building material of space, defining everything: from general spatial relations to the smallest details, are the designs of the Museum of Revolutionary Act in Krakow, the Central Cultural Center in Katowice and the Faculty of Food Technology of the University of Agriculture in Krakow.

Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Rzeszów — plan

The next step of pursuing new possibilities of creating architecture on the basis of my own theory of releasing form, consists of creating simpler arrangements of dynamic solids, subject to tension, gravitation, pressure.

The most renowned and characteristic example is the design of the funeral house the Gateway to the City of the Dead in Krakow — Batowice.

Its guiding thought concerned the creation of a building — a symbol of a timeless character. A building, which is found at “the end of the road” like a gateway, symbolizing the borderline between the world of the living and eternity.

The symbolism accepted in this realized project is a natural consequence of the need to build an architectural object, which draws us into the world of transcendent experiences, surpassing the limits of consciousness and cognition, carrying us into the world of mystical fantasy.

The subject of this project concerns the problem of passing from light to shadow, contrast between unity and darkness, relativity of our own experiences developed by the symbolism of form. The response to such formulation of the subject of the project constitutes the realized object, in reality of which author’s canons of form building, creation of space, proportions and architectural vacuum are reflected.

Geometry has become a tool organizing and ordering both the environment of the object and its projection and division of the solid. Sometimes, the geometrical system has been broken. It does not define form definitively. Due to the arbitrary decision resulting from the discovery in the urbanistic context or the functional structure of the element, schematics of the system have been disturbed, introducing into the architectural form balance between loyalty to rules and freedom from them.

The architecture of the funeral house is a well-thought coexistence of two elements, a new spatial shape and a new aesthetic expression, which have made this object very important in the creative output until now.

“Funeral House”, nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award, is the first Polish project to become the finalist of the 4th edition of Mies van der Rohe European Award.

The design of the “Funeral House” receives awards in the country, is published in prestigious architectural magazines abroad, (e.g. 2nd Degree Award of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration for outstanding creative achievements — Award of Year 1999; 1st Award Polski Cement for the best building erected in concrete technology; “Architektura”, “Domus”, “Architectural Record”; …, “THE PHAIDON ATLAS OF 21ST CENTURY WORLD ARCHITECTURE” — New York/London; “581 Architects in the World” — Japan”).

The Funeral House, included among the ICONS OF POLISH ARCHITECTURE, is presented at exhibitions in the country and abroad, as well as lectures at national and foreign architectural higher education institutions (e.g. Krakow, Bialystok, Kielce, Katowice, Warsaw, Münster, Lipsk, Darmstadt…).

Author’s artistic canons are also retained in three other, important and characteristic objects for the artistic output: the new wing of the Jagiellonian Library in Krakow, the complex of buildings of the University of Economics also in Krakow and the Lodz Philharmonic Concert Hall in Lodz.

These projects are characterized by contextual reference to the value of place.

In the case of the new wing of the Jagiellonian Library, the historic building by Wacław Krzyżanowski, with which the realized project conducts a close aesthetic and formal dialogue, is a determinant of my own statement.

The inner order regulated by the spatial modules, in its spatial disposition refers to the existing building in terms of scale, material and the drawing of the siding as well as the regular, almost rigorous articulation of the elevation.

The particular context in which the design of the building was created and the functional considerations, determined the specific aesthetic shape expressed, among others, by the simplicity of the elevation drawing varied by the sculptural, sensitive to the filtered inside play of light, west wall and the diagonally placed entrance part.

The quality of the architecture of the new wing of the Jagiellonian Library was recognized in the circles of the Polish architects. The building received the SARP award of the year, awarded under the auspices of the prime minister of the government of the Republic of Poland, for the best architectural work realized in Poland in year 2001, as well as the award of the year for the best architectural work realized in Poland from public funds.

I think that this building can be with full confidence considered the best showcase of Krakow architecture at the turn of the century. The project of the development of the Cracow University of Economics Campus, representing the Polish architecture at the famous prestigious Venice Biennale of Architecture, constitutes the transition from the urban arrangement of the existing buildings to the new one, marked out by the neighbouring with the University of Economics Campus object commonly known as “The Skeletor” — a building still 37

under construction once intended to become the seat of the Main Technical Organization (NOT). The undeveloped area in the shape of a “triangle” becomes the zone of transition. The principle of the composition involves an attempt to overcome the “violence” committed by the building shell of NOT. The dynamics of space have been emphasized by the solid of the Auditorium Maximum situated above the swimming pool hall. The architecture of the new buildings has been dominated by the “heavy” motifs of the brick walls, which provides reference to the main building.

The contextual difference of the architecture of the new buildings of the University of Economics is expressed by general references — scale, material, not by direct reproduction of forms.

The new buildings, being “added” to the Campus complex, are characterized by courageous formal solutions, fully retaining its individual expression, without copying the elements of the environment.

In his account of the changes of the University of Economics Campus in Krakow professor Jacek Purchla wrote: “[…] Romulad Loegler […] is a figure which rose up in the 90s to a classic of modern architecture, he is also one of the few architects of the second half of the 20th century Krakow, who has gone beyond the limits of local nature. It is not a matter of chance that the Jagiellonian Library, the Funeral House at the cemetary in Batowice, the University of Economics, the International Cultural Centre, as well as the building of the Opera House — the most prestigious realizations in Krakow — were entrusted to him. Purity and simplicity of the language of forms, frankness and truth of the material, harmony and logic of the structure, as well as great 38

emotional load, constitute the characteristic features of this architecture. […] Preparing the concept of the new campus of the University of Economics, the architect committed himself to a much more difficult task than loyalty to MATERILGERECHTIGKEIT principle and the modular forming of the solid of the building.

Creating the vision of the campus, he commenced a dialogue with place and time. […] Maybe thus, Loegler’s concept of new pavilions, although rooted in rational geometry, reveals extraordinary dynamics of composition based both on violent opposition of light and heavy materials, as well as on the collision of spatial forms […] The gist of virtuosity achieved by Romuald Loegler in the new campus of the University of Economics, constitutes the exceptional skill of combining the ironclad principles of rational geometry with the romantic liberty of “releasing” created architecture […] The work of Romuald Loegler constitutes one of the most distinguished achievements of Polish architecture around the year 2000.”

The building of the Philharmonic Hall in Lodz may without doubt be included among the presented examples of works illustrating the creative road until now.

Its uniqueness on the map of the contemporary Polish architecture has been distinguished by numerous awards and publications, in the country and abroad (e.g. “Main SARP Award 2004 for the best project erected from public funds”, “1st Degree Award of the Minister of Construction for outstanding creative achievements in the year 2007”, “Distinction from SARP and Polski Cement […] for the best architectural project involving the use of reinforced concrete technology — 2004” […] “101 most interesting Polish buildings” AGORA; THE PHAIDON ATLAS OF CONTEMPORARY WORLD ARCHITECTURE — New York / London; ERA 21 — Brno 6/2007, […] Architecture of Sound […] Paweł Kraus, RAM publishing house Krakow 2006).

The characteristic features of the Philharmonic Hall in Lodz include as follows: — pure contemporary composition emphasizing the historical context of the place, simultaneously characterizing it with form, which has a chance to be neutrally contemporary for the next decades; — contemporary forms constitute only a background for the strong historical accent of the elevation — Author’s architectural language — subtle, tactful and elegant as well — makes the structure, despite the relatively modest scale, monumental and significant in the perspective of Sienkiewicz street; — space for the audience decorated with light filtered through brise-soleils, perspective concurrence of the monumental space of the foyer, lightness of the suspended platforms and scale of the smooth walls. Extraordinariness of the interior of the space of the main foyer interior is completed by the glass roof, which together with the glass walls lets external light into the interior, giving a sense of connection between the place and the city; The analysis of the solid of the building reveals a characteristic feature — certain dichotomy applied in formal solutions. In such a manner tension was created, which establishes relations between the exterior and the interior, between the main front elevation and the remaining elevations.

The creation of the front elevation of the Philharmonic Hall in Lodz results from history of the place, specific representative functions and variety of architectural applications, constituting a testimony of the contemporary aesthetic preferences. The historical context is realized through processing the language of historical forms with the use of contemporary techniques and materials. Pictures applied on the glass panes simulating rustication, aediculae, columns, cornices or panels inspired by pointillist painting, create an intriguing tension on the surface of the front elevation, resulting from the potential of its interpretations. Depending where we focus our sight we see a presentation of the past history of Lodz, symbolized by the old “Concert Hall” of Ignacy Vogl, as well as its contemporary aspirations articulated 40

with contemporary language of architectural forms, used in an impressive way, also in the main concert hall. Its architecture is created by the specific shaping of the horizontal line of the walls, the rhythm of the vertical divisions and material — red granite, which is equally responsible for shaping of its aesthetics and acoustics.

In the trend of the presented artistic credo, in current projects as well as the above discussed examples, the possibility of creation of contemporary architecture has been presented, based on elementary geometrical and symbolic forms, rooted in the Christian and Latin cultural circles.

5. PROFESSIONAL RESUME EDUCATION: Born in 1940 in Sokołów Małopolski, In 1958 Secondary School Leaving Examination at Priest Stanisław Konarski Secondary School No. 1 in Rzeszów. In the years 1958–1964 studies at the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology. Diploma of the Department of Public Use Buildings — “Krakow Communication Centre” — dissertation supervisor professor Zbigniew Kupiec.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING: In the years 1964–65 traineeship in the Department of Public Use Buildings at the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology.

In the years 1966–73 architectural training in design offices and construction companies. Architect at ATELIER KARL SCHWANZER in Vienna, in the field of conceptual design — 1973/74. Until the year 1987, head of an individual architectural office of Krakowskie Biuro Projektowo-Badawcze Budownictwa Ogólnego, with parallel work at Pracownia Sztuk Plastycznych i Pracownia Usług architektonicznych SARP. 41

In 1999 doctorate at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology with the supervision of professor Konrad Kucza-Kuczyński. In the years 1978-81, partner at L&S ARCHITECTS, Helsinki.

Since the year 1987 design practice at Atelier Loegler, currently Atelier Loegler Architekci. During that time, editor-in-chief of RAM publishing house — publisher of architectural magazine “A&B” and book publications concerning the subject of architecture.

DIDACTICS: In the year 1999/2000 lecturer of the Division of Public Use Buildings, classes conducted with professor Wojciech Buliński at Technische Universität Darmstadt Fachbereich Architektur, within the frames of didactic cooperation between the higher education institutions.

Since 2004 supreme mastery classes conducted at the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts of Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University, combined with lectures on theory of architecture.

In the years 2006–2015, within the frames of employment at the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts of Bialystok University of Technology, (lecturer, assistant professor, visiting professor), conducting classes on designing public use buildings and lectures within the range of professional ethics in architecture.

In the years 2011–2014 lecturer at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Lublin University of Technology. In the academic year 2014/15 conducting classes on architectural design and lectures on theory of architecture at the department of Architecture and Design of Gliwice Academy of Entrepreneurship. In the year 2015 supervising and reviewing diploma dissertations at the above mentioned Faculties of Architecture and at the Faculty of Architecture of Poznan University of Technology.
