Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Information
NCT is situated in the heart of Toronto, Canada’s business and cultural hub, with excellent access to public transportation
Public transit is the most effective way to get around the city. The TTC is the public transit agency that operates buses, subways, streetcars, and paratransit (WheelTrans) services within Toronto Some of these services connect to or overlap with the Peel Region, York Region, and Durham Region public transit systems, creating an extensive, interconnected, and convenient transit system across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

Canvas is a web-based learning management system (LMS) It is used by students to access and manage online course learning materials and by the College to communicate with you You can connect with your program manager and faculty, access course content, syllabus, self-study resources, video materials, submit assignments, lead discussions via discussion boards, join classes, access progress reports and test scores, attend workshops and much more! Academic Alert, Academic Probation and Dismissal
To move from one level to the next within a program, you must complete your current term with one of the following academic standings: good standing, academic alert, or academic probation This does not override any pre-requisite
Academic Alert
• Graduate Certificate students are placed on academic alert if their grade average is between 50-64% or when they fail and/or drop one or more courses
• Diploma students are placed on academic alert if their grade average is between 50-59% or when they fail and/or drop one or more courses

Missing one or more courses from the previous term may affect your ability to progress through your program without interruption We request that you follow up with your Student Success Advisor to discuss how this will impact your academic plan moving forward

Academic Probation
You will be placed on academic probation if your grade average is between 4049% Please refer to the Program Progression and Graduation Policy
Next Steps:
• Students placed on academic probation may be required to consult a Student Success Advisor and discuss a learning plan to improve your academic performance
• Missing one or more courses from a previous term may affect your ability to progress through your program without interruption You will be asked to follow up with your Student Success Advisor to discuss how this will impact your learning plan moving forward
• Academic probation can impact your eligibility to begin your field placement term As stated in the Program Progression and Graduation Policy: “A student must maintain an academic standing of either ‘good standing’ or ‘academic alert’ in order to proceed to a field placement work term. Academic eligibility is based on the two terms immediately prior to any work term ”
Academic Dismissal
You will be withdrawn from your program if you have a grade average of less than 40% or have spent two (2) terms on academic probation
If you have been dismissed from your program and would like to be readmitted, you must meet with your Student Success Advisor to review your options

Feedback is gathered in a variety of ways, including student satisfaction data, course feedback surveys on Canvas, and student curriculum committees
Course Feedback
Course Feedback is an essential component of all courses offered for credit at NCT and provides a systematic and consistent mechanism for gathering and responding to input from students
A Student Course Feedback Survey for each course each term is used to measure students’ perceptions of the learning context It assists in the identification of areas of strengths and areas needing improvement in college course offerings.

The transition to college life is a big one – and part of it is adjusting to the workload and new challenges. At NCT, you are never alone. We offer a variety of services to help you learn and succeed.

Online and in-person academic support is available You may meet with Academic Facilitators from Monday to Friday from 8 a m – 4 p m EST if you require additional assistance in Accounting, Math, Computer Programming and English Language

Conduct
Professionalism must be maintained during online appointments and behavioural expectations are the same online as in-person
• Peer Mentors must adhere to codes of professional behavior and respect in the workplace, as outlined in the Employee Code of Conduct
• Learners must adhere to all aspects of the Student Code of Conduct
• All parties must follow the Academic Honesty policy

Requirements to Become a Peer Tutor
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for a position as a Peer Tutor:
• Minimum of 80% in a course
• Must be currently enrolled in classes or on a field placement as an NCT student
Academic Facilitators can:
• Help reinforce understanding of concepts taught in class
• Clarify problems similar to those on graded assignments
• Review a writing sample to help students identify grammar or structural weaknesses
• Support students in understanding the requirements of an assignment
• Determine the best approach for students to successfully complete their assignments

Student Rights and Responsibilities Office
The Student Rights and Responsibilities Office (SRRO) addresses matters concerning student misconduct, sexual violence prevention and response, as well as compliance with the Student Code of Conduct. Field Placement
The Field Placement course is a mandatory component of certain programs at NCT It must be completed during the second term of a program
You must complete a set number of hours in your field placement prior to graduating from NCT The Field Placement course allows you to gain exposure and insight into career positions related to your program of study In essence, a field placement is a learning activity that provides you with an opportunity to participate in the day-to-day activities of a course-based project and allows you to contribute to the host company’s work environment
It is an opportunity for you to spend an extended period of time in an organization and undertake genuine work tasks with workplace supervision You will apply classroom theories in the workplace and develop professional competencies
To be eligible for a field placement component, you will need a co-op work permit

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate documents to come to Canada as a student, or transition from previous studies in Canada For more information about study permits, please check the IRCC website
Advancing from a Canadian High School (Secondary) to Post-Secondary (College)
If you are progressing from a Canadian high school to Niagara College – Toronto and have a valid study permit, you are not required to change or apply for a new study permit However, if your study permit is about to expire, you must extend your study permit inside Canada two to three months prior to the expiry date You may not attend classes with an expired study permit unless you apply for an extension before its expiration Additionally, if you want to be able to work while you study, you must apply to change the conditions of your study permit
Changing your post-secondary institution from outside Canada
If you are in Canada and have been studying at another college in Canada before enrolling at Niagara College – Toronto, you must change your Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on your IRCC account

Work Permit
One of the advantages of choosing to study in Canada is that students are eligible to get Canadian work experience while they are here Some types of employment require a permit in order to work legally To be paid legally in Canada, requires a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

• Work on the campus where student is registered

• Have a valid study permit
• Apply within 180 days of receiving a notification that student has completed their degree requirements
• Students who began their studies before May 15, 2024, will remain eligible for PGWP provided they meet all other program eligibility criteria*

The Student Association serves as the governing body for all students enrolled at NCT The purpose of the Student Association is to represent and address the needs and interests of the student body It strives to facilitate communication and interactions between students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community and organizes various educational and social activities The Student Association is comprised of NCT students who are elected to three positions: President, Vice-President, and Executive Administrator

We believe in building a foundation where students can join social events and student clubs, integrate into the student community, and embody student life With regard to activities and events, our goal is to promote diversity and inclusion

Tips for Success Online Learning Strategies
Check Canvas and your student email daily
Important announcements, updates and revised course plans will be shared via Canvas and your student email Review all Course Recovery Documents carefully and be sure to check for any new dates and deadlines
Make a study plan and stick to It
Set small goals for tackling your work and ensure they are achievable Stay organized and create a schedule with dates and times for tasks that need to be completed. Allow for some flexibility to accommodate unforeseen events or obligations. Check off tasks that have been completed. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and motivate you to continue


Eliminate distractions
Avoid social media and turn off your phone or notifications while studying. Remember to schedule time to connect with friends—it is important to maintain social relations Set aside time for uninterrupted work and be sure to take regular breaks
Make use of free tech tools at NCT
