FIRE PREVENTION 101 9-tips for a fire-safe home

Students should be aware of best fire safety practices when moving into accommodations, & household members should discuss fire safety techniques to keep yourself and others safe.

WATCH WHILE YOU COOK

Cooking requires constant attention, and distractions can lead to a cooking fire, so staying in the kitchen and using a proper-fitting pot lid is important.

CANDLE CAREFULLY Place candles in a safe, sturdy holder with a glass shade or hurricane chimney, and blow them out when leaving the room.

SMOKING

Very few residences allow smoking indoors and smoking is prohibited in Ontario in restaurants and indoor public spaces. The safest environment to smoke is outdoors. Check with your landlord to identify where to find safe and acceptable smoking areas.

UTILIZE HYDRO WISELY

Toasters, coffeemakers, and microwaves should be connected to an outlet directly or, if used with an extension cable, ensure they use the proper gauge. Only certified power bars should be used for audio equipment, computers, and lighting.

ORGANIZE YOUR SPACE

Combustible items should be kept at least one meter away from heat sources, such as stovetops, space heaters, and electric devices – this includes furniture and drapes.

WORKING SMOKE ALARMS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW

Smoke alarms must be tested monthly & replaced if they do not work. They should not be placed close to the kitchen or bathroom and should be tested after long periods of leave. Never tamper with or turn off a smoke alarm.

ESCAPE STRATEGY

Determine all exits and be aware of the building’s fire protection strategy. Call the fire department from a safe area if a fire occurs: 416-338-9050 for the general contact, or 911 in an emergency.

PREPARE YOURSELF Students should assemble a fire safety package containing a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, flashlight, radio, additional batteries and a certified power bar.

CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS

Carbon monoxide alarms are required if a room or flat has a fuel-burning device, fireplace, or adjacent garage. Check with the landlord to ensure they are placed near all bedrooms.
